- 0:11Hello friends, it's Shaun here. It's Monday, the 13th of April.
- 0:17And oh, it is so good to be with you at the start of this whole
- 0:21new week as we are going to be spending this week and the weeks
- 0:25to come reading through this incredible book of Joshua that
- 0:29outlines God's people. Finally, finally after that
- 0:33whole generation wandering through the desert, entering
- 0:37into this promised land, their inheritance that has been part
- 0:41of their story that they had been looking forward to for so
- 0:44long. And this week is an epic week
- 0:47because they finish crossing the Jordan River and then the
- 0:50conquests begin and God just hands them these parts of their
- 0:55land 1 by 1 as the people provide very little resistance
- 0:59as God's people move through with this incredible blessing
- 1:03and Providence that God's promised them.
- 1:06Ah Lord, open up our hearts so that we can see you, that we can
- 1:11understand more about who you are and your love for us as we
- 1:16read this today. Alright friends, let's dive in.
- 1:20Reading together Joshua chapter 4.
- 1:33When all the people had crossed the Jordan, the Lord said to
- 1:36Joshua, now choose 12 men, one from each tribe.
- 1:41Tell them, take 12 Stones from the very place where the priests
- 1:45are standing in the middle of the Jordan.
- 1:47Carry them out and pile them up at the place where you will camp
- 1:51tonight. Sir Joshua called together the
- 1:5412 men he had chosen, one from each of the tribes of Israel.
- 1:58He told them, go into the middle of the Jordan, in front of the
- 2:02ark of the Lord your God. Each of you must pick one stone
- 2:06and carry it on your shoulder. 12 Stones in all, one for each
- 2:10of the 12 tribes of Israel. We will use these stones to
- 2:14build the memorial in the future.
- 2:16Your children will ask you what do these stones mean?
- 2:20Then you can tell them. They remind us that the Jordan
- 2:24River stopped flowing when the Ark of the Lord's Covenant went
- 2:27across. These stones will stand as a
- 2:30memorial among the people of Israel forever.
- 2:34So the men did as Joshua had commanded them.
- 2:37They took 12 Stones from the middle of the Jordan River, one
- 2:40for each tribe, just as the Lord had told Joshua.
- 2:44They carried them to the place where they camped for the night
- 2:47and constructed a memorial there.
- 2:50Joshua also set up another pile of 12 Stones in the middle of
- 2:54the Jordan at the place where the priests who carried the Ark
- 2:57of the Covenant were standing, and they are there to this day.
- 3:02The priests who were carrying the ark stood in the middle of
- 3:05the river until all of the Lord's commands that Moses had
- 3:09given to Joshua were carried out.
- 3:12Meanwhile, the people hurried across the river bed, and when
- 3:15everyone was safely on the other side, the priests crossed over
- 3:19with the ark of the Lord. As the people watched, the armed
- 3:24warriors from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe
- 3:28of Manasseh led the Israelites across the Jordan just as Moses
- 3:32had directed. These armed men, about 40,000
- 3:36strong, were ready for battle, and the Lord was with them as
- 3:40they crossed over to the plains of Jericho.
- 3:43That day the Lord made Joshua a great leader in the eyes of all
- 3:48the Israelites, and for the rest of his life they revered him as
- 3:53much as they had revered Moses. The Lord said to Joshua, command
- 3:58the priests carrying the ark of the covenant to come up out of
- 4:02the river bed. So Joshua gave the command.
- 4:06As soon as the priests carrying the ark of the Lord's covenant
- 4:09came up out of the river bed and the feet were on high ground,
- 4:14the water of the Jordan returned and overflowed its banks as
- 4:18before. The people crossed the Jordan on
- 4:22the 10th day of the first month. Then they camped at Gilgal, just
- 4:27east of Jericho. It was there at Gilgal that
- 4:30Joshua piled up the 12 Stones taken from the Jordan River.
- 4:35Then Joshua said to the Israelites, In the future your
- 4:39children will ask, what do these stones mean?
- 4:42Then you can tell them this is where the Israelites crossed the
- 4:46Jordan on dry ground. For the Lord your God dried up
- 4:51the river right before your eyes, and He kept it dry until
- 4:54you were all across, just as He did at the Red Sea when He dried
- 4:59it up until we had all crossed over.
- 5:02He did this so all the nations of the earth might know that the
- 5:06Lord's hand is powerful, and so you might fear the Lord your God
- 5:11forever. Oh Lord, you truly are the God
- 5:25of generations. You are not a God for then, or a
- 5:29God for another time, or a God just for now.
- 5:32But you reign eternally. You sit outside of time, and yet
- 5:39you are here intimately with us in this moment.
- 5:44Lord, our human minds just cannot quite fathom that.
- 5:48But here in this story, we see you setting up your victory in
- 5:52your provision for generations to be able to ask the questions
- 5:57and hear the stories. Lord, I pray that we would also
- 6:01be in the business of sharing stories about you, about your
- 6:05provision, and about your love for us.
- 6:09So Lord, inspire us. Create moments in which we can
- 6:14share stories about you with each other and with generations
- 6:18new and generations past. We love you and we're so
- 6:23grateful for the way that you do.
- 6:25Come and play an active role in our stories today.
- 6:30In every generation. We love you and we praise you
- 6:34and we pray all of this in that saving name of Jesus, Amen.
