- 0:00Speaker 1: William Conrad returns as Marshal Matt Dillon, joined by Parley
- 0:04Speaker 1: Bear as Chester, Georgia Ellis as Kitty, and Howard McNear
- 0:08Speaker 1: as Doc. On August 16th, 1959, CBS Radio presented Gunsmoke,
- 0:15Speaker 1: episode 384, Pokey Pete, written by Marion Clark and produced
- 0:21Speaker 1: by Norman MacDonald. Dodge City is familiar with the monthly
- 0:26Speaker 1: visits of an elderly silent outsider called Pokey Pete, whose
- 0:30Speaker 1: appearance has made him the subject of gossip and ridicule.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Then Chester tells a local boy an exaggerated story about
- 0:38Speaker 1: hidden treasure, and the rumor begins to spread through town. Matt, Chester, Doc,
- 0:44Speaker 1: and Kitty find themselves involved in a matter that reaches
- 0:48Speaker 1: beyond the tales people have told about a man they
- 0:51Speaker 1: scarcely know. And now we return to the original broadcast.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Around Dodge City and in the Territory on West, there's
- 1:09Speaker 2: just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers,
- 1:12Speaker 2: and that's with a U.S. Marshal and the smell of
- 1:14Speaker 2: gun smoke. Gunsmoke, starring William Conrad. The story of the
- 1:37Speaker 2: violence that moved west with young America. And the story
- 1:41Speaker 2: of a man who moved with it.
- 1:43Speaker 3: I'm that man. Matt Dillon, United States Marshal. The first
- 1:47Speaker 3: man they look for and the last they want to meet.
- 1:51Speaker 3: It's a chancy job. And it makes a man watchful.
- 1:56Speaker 3: And a little lonely.
- 1:58Speaker 4: Gunsmoke Hey, fellas, lookie there.
- 2:16Speaker 5: Pee-pee, pokey pee, he wears boxes on his feet.
- 2:21Speaker 6: Pee-pee, pokey pee, he wears boxes on his feet.
- 2:24Speaker 7: Here now, Jitky, you stop that.
- 2:31Speaker 8: I did. Now you leave that poor old man be.
- 2:34Speaker 9: Well, I ain't doing nothing, Chester.
- 2:36Speaker 7: Well, it ain't right you tormenting old Pete like that.
- 2:38Speaker 10: All the fellas do at Chester don't mean nothing. Old
- 2:41Speaker 10: Pete don't care.
- 2:42Speaker 8: How do you know he don't care?
- 2:45Speaker 7: Well, he don't say nothing. Yeah, it don't make no
- 2:48Speaker 7: difference if he says nothing or not. It just ain't
- 2:51Speaker 7: right teasing the body for no reason at all.
- 2:53Speaker 4: He's awful funny looking, Chester.
- 2:55Speaker 7: Well, now, ain't that a shame? You live as long
- 2:59Speaker 7: as old Pete, you might be funnier looking yet.
- 3:02Speaker 10: What do you mean?
- 3:04Speaker 7: You can't never tell what might happen to you, Ted. Why,
- 3:06Speaker 7: you might just grow another ear or another nose.
- 3:09Speaker 8: Or something like that.
- 3:11Speaker 7: Aw. No, sirree, you can't tell at all how you
- 3:14Speaker 7: might turn out. I'd be mighty careful before I poked
- 3:18Speaker 7: any fun.
- 3:19Speaker 8: Mighty careful.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Well, I guess we.
- 3:22Speaker 8: Here. Pull this while I see if it's strong enough.
- 3:25Speaker 1: All right.
- 3:26Speaker 8: Hey, that's a fishing pole, ain't it?
- 3:28Speaker 7: That's a fishing pole. Of course it's a fishing pole. Ted,
- 3:34Speaker 7: if you spent more time down at the river instead
- 3:36Speaker 7: of tagging along after old Pete, you wouldn't ask fool
- 3:38Speaker 7: questions like that.
- 3:39Speaker 8: Hold it steady now. Let me see.
- 3:42Speaker 7: Yeah. Yeah, I guess that'll do all right.
- 3:46Speaker 10: You going fishing now, Chester?
- 3:48Speaker 9: We'll see.
- 3:48Speaker 7: Now, that sounds like.
- 3:49Speaker 8: A good idea.
- 3:51Speaker 10: Got a special place to go?
- 3:52Speaker 11: Boy.
- 3:55Speaker 7: Boy, I got me a place where them catfish is
- 3:58Speaker 7: so big you can hear them meowing before you.
- 4:00Speaker 8: Even reach the river.
- 4:02Speaker 10: I'd like to see that, Chester.
- 4:03Speaker 7: Well, it's a sight to see, Ted. A sight to see.
- 4:08Speaker 11: Well, that's real nice.
- 4:24Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 4:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:25Speaker 8: That's just what you need, Matt. Another gun.
- 4:28Speaker 9: What do you mean, Doc?
- 4:29Speaker 8: Well, your office is full of them now.
- 4:31Speaker 5: Well, now, this is a new model, Doc. I want
- 4:34Speaker 5: the Marshal to look at it over for me before
- 4:36Speaker 5: I order any number of them.
- 4:38Speaker 9: It's a center fire repeater.
- 4:40Speaker 8: Yeah, whatever that means.
- 4:42Speaker 3: Well, if it works right, it means something mighty good, Doc,
- 4:45Speaker 3: as far as rifles are concerned, I'll tell you that.
- 4:47Speaker 9: Well, they say it works all right, Marshal.
- 4:49Speaker 5: And they're making it in three sizes, a 15-shot rifle,
- 4:53Speaker 5: a 12-shot carbine, and a half-size six-shot. It's a new
- 4:57Speaker 5: kind of gun, Doc.
- 4:58Speaker 6: If folks had put as much time in on inventing
- 5:01Speaker 6: things to cure people with as they do inventing things
- 5:03Speaker 6: to kill them with, it would.
- 5:06Speaker 9: Ah, hello, Pete. I'll be right with you, Pete.
- 5:09Speaker 3: All right, now, go ahead, Jonas. You wait on him, huh?
- 5:10Speaker 8: All right. I'll try to take care of him right
- 5:13Speaker 8: away when he comes in. He don't come in very often.
- 5:15Speaker 9: Sure, go ahead.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Take your time.
- 5:16Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 5:16Speaker 5: All right, now, Pete, what can I do for you
- 5:23Speaker 5: this month? Oh, want some of them candles over there?
- 5:32Speaker 10: All right.
- 5:36Speaker 9: Now, how many you want, Pete? Six. Oh, just two.
- 5:42Speaker 5: You sure that'll last you the month?
- 5:46Speaker 6: All right, all right.
- 5:47Speaker 9: Just two it is.
- 5:47Speaker 3: Now, what else?
- 5:55Speaker 7: Beans.
- 5:57Speaker 9: All righty.
- 6:00Speaker 5: Now, I'll tell you what I'll do. I'll start pouring
- 6:02Speaker 5: them out. You let me know when to stop, huh?
- 6:07Speaker 5: Just raise your hand, Pete, when I pour it out enough.
- 6:12Speaker 12: All right.
- 6:13Speaker 8: That's fine.
- 6:16Speaker 9: Now, what else do you need? Lamp wicks? Lamp chimney?
- 6:26Speaker 3: Oh, coal oil.
- 6:27Speaker 9: Well, sure. Sure.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Uh, Jonas, we're gonna go. I want to catch Jim
- 6:32Speaker 3: Buck before he takes the stage out. I'll be back
- 6:34Speaker 3: to see the gun later, huh?
- 6:35Speaker 9: Why, sure, Marshal. Any old time. So long, Jonas.
- 6:37Speaker 3: All right, now, Pete. Pete's a strange old coot, isn't he?
- 6:49Speaker 3: How long has he been around here, anyway?
- 6:51Speaker 12: Who, Pete?
- 6:52Speaker 9: Oh, heavens, Matt, I don't know.
- 6:54Speaker 8: I doubt if anybody does.
- 6:56Speaker 6: He's been coming into town once a month. Ever since
- 6:59Speaker 6: I've been here and probably long before that.
- 7:02Speaker 3: Why doesn't he talk, Doc? You know what ails him?
- 7:05Speaker 7: No, I don't, Matt.
- 7:07Speaker 8: He's never asked for any help.
- 7:09Speaker 6: He's never been anywhere near my office.
- 7:11Speaker 3: No wonder he's so patient with all the tormenting that
- 7:14Speaker 3: he takes.
- 7:15Speaker 6: Oh, he's always been gentle with the youngsters. Sometimes he
- 7:18Speaker 6: can get riled with grown-ups, though.
- 7:21Speaker 7: And talking of getting riled, Chester said he.
- 7:23Speaker 6: Was going to bring a package up from the depot
- 7:25Speaker 6: for me.
- 7:25Speaker 8: Where is he, anyway?
- 7:27Speaker 3: Chester is taking a day off.
- 7:29Speaker 10: A day off?
- 7:30Speaker 6: What's Chester need with.
- 7:31Speaker 8: A day off?
- 7:32Speaker 3: Well, he told me he wanted to take a friend fishing.
- 7:34Speaker 8: Fishing?
- 7:35Speaker 3: Oh.
- 7:36Speaker 6: Well, I better get out to people and get it myself.
- 7:39Speaker 7: I'll see you later, man.
- 7:50Speaker 4: I don't hear no catfish meowing, Chester.
- 7:52Speaker 10: We're right on the bank, too.
- 7:54Speaker 7: Well, see, it's just this wrong time of day. They
- 7:57Speaker 7: don't tell them to do it when the sun's so high.
- 8:00Speaker 7: You're more likely to hear them carrying on around suppertime.
- 8:03Speaker 9: You sure talk funny.
- 8:05Speaker 7: No, I ain't talking funny at nobody the way you
- 8:07Speaker 7: were doing to.
- 8:07Speaker 8: Old Pete this morning.
- 8:09Speaker 10: I won't do it no more.
- 8:11Speaker 7: That's a good thing. Might not come out so good
- 8:14Speaker 7: next time. How's that?
- 8:16Speaker 9: Well, because old.
- 8:17Speaker 7: Pete might just turn around and snap you right in two.
- 8:20Speaker 7: That's how's that.
- 8:21Speaker 9: Ah, he don't do that.
- 8:22Speaker 8: Mind your line.
- 8:23Speaker 7: It's hidden with that snag down for him.
- 8:25Speaker 8: Watch it.
- 8:25Speaker 3: That's better.
- 8:28Speaker 7: Uh, no, old Pete ain't done nothing yet.
- 8:30Speaker 8: But he's getting older and.
- 8:32Speaker 7: Tireder and what with not even getting any sleep at all.
- 8:35Speaker 8: No sleep?
- 8:36Speaker 7: Well, they say he don't sleep a wink. He just
- 8:39Speaker 7: sits there with that little old sack of his.
- 8:41Speaker 8: Guarding that treasure. Here you go.
- 8:43Speaker 7: Want some more bread and cheese?
- 8:45Speaker 6: Ugh, she smells kind of funny.
- 8:49Speaker 7: Well, it is pretty stout, but that just signifies it's good.
- 8:52Speaker 7: Eat all you want, it's good for you.
- 8:54Speaker 8: Uh, what kind of treasure does old Pete have?
- 8:58Speaker 7: Oh, he's got a little old dab of treasure buried
- 9:02Speaker 7: out there. They say he told to clean up the Mississippi.
- 9:06Speaker 11: Off in a pirate ship.
- 9:08Speaker 7: You ever seen it, Chester? Well, no, I ain't never
- 9:11Speaker 7: seen it exactly, but... He uses gold money when he
- 9:15Speaker 7: comes to town. He sure has to get it from somewhere.
- 9:18Speaker 8: Pirate gold. That's what it is, a piece of eight.
- 9:21Speaker 8: Piece of what? I'd sure like to see some pieces
- 9:23Speaker 8: of eight.
- 9:24Speaker 9: Well, now, I ain't so sure that it's pirate gold.
- 9:27Speaker 8: I might just take me to run out there and see.
- 9:29Speaker 7: Now, that ain't likely to be very good.
- 9:30Speaker 8: Now, sit still, Ted.
- 9:32Speaker 7: If you fell in that river, the catfish would have
- 9:33Speaker 7: to help you.
- 9:34Speaker 8: Where are you going?
- 9:35Speaker 4: I gotta get back, Chester.
- 9:36Speaker 8: I got something to do. Well, now, don't you get
- 9:39Speaker 8: lost getting home. Boys... They sure don't grow up like
- 9:46Speaker 8: they used to.
- 9:48Speaker 7: It's just hard to tell what the world's coming to.
- 9:50Speaker 4: Hello, Matt.
- 10:04Speaker 10: You couldn't hold out, huh?
- 10:06Speaker 9: You win, Kitty.
- 10:07Speaker 3: It's too hot to sit in that office waiting for
- 10:09Speaker 3: something to happen.
- 10:10Speaker 10: I'll sit down.
- 10:10Speaker 3: Yeah, thanks.
- 10:12Speaker 10: Sam, bring us some beer, will you please?
- 10:14Speaker 8: Sure, Kitty.
- 10:15Speaker 9: Oh, it is hot.
- 10:19Speaker 10: I'm surprised that you're not. It's usually Chester who complains
- 10:22Speaker 10: about the heat.
- 10:23Speaker 3: Well, he'd be complaining he just isn't here.
- 10:26Speaker 10: Well, you know, I feel kind of sorry for Chester,
- 10:28Speaker 10: running your errands in all this heat.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Kitty, Chester is not running my errands.
- 10:33Speaker 11: He's fishing.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Here's the beer. Ah, thanks.
- 10:40Speaker 8: Yeah, I can.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Just see him now sitting out there with his feet
- 10:45Speaker 3: in the water someplace fishing.
- 10:47Speaker 10: Oh, I'm sorry to hear that, too.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Oh, why?
- 10:51Speaker 10: Well, he usually comes in with a string of smelly
- 10:53Speaker 10: catfish and presents them to me, and I never know.
- 10:56Speaker 8: How to refuse him.
- 10:57Speaker 10: I don't know how to get rid of him, either.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Hello, Pete.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Poor old fellow.
- 11:06Speaker 10: This is his regular visit to the bar. You could
- 11:10Speaker 10: run a calendar the way he comes in here every month.
- 11:12Speaker 3: Oh, he, uh, ever say anything, Kitty?
- 11:16Speaker 7: Never.
- 11:17Speaker 10: Just Puts his money down in the bar, has three drinks,
- 11:21Speaker 10: no more, no less, and walks on out.
- 11:25Speaker 3: He keeps to himself pretty much, doesn't he? Mm-hmm.
- 11:29Speaker 10: I wish everybody that steps up to that bar would
- 11:31Speaker 10: be as quiet.
- 11:32Speaker 9: Those two are just coming in.
- 11:34Speaker 3: Don't they hear you? Bring the bottle. Bring it up here.
- 11:38Speaker 9: Hey, little lady.
- 11:39Speaker 3: Hey.
- 11:44Speaker 8: Come on up here and have a drink with us.
- 11:46Speaker 8: Come on, have a drink.
- 11:47Speaker 10: No, thanks, boys. Not right now.
- 11:50Speaker 3: You come up here.
- 11:52Speaker 9: And I'll tell you what I'll do. I'll pay for
- 11:55Speaker 9: all the glasses I buy.
- 11:57Speaker 10: Oh, looks like I better go up there and settle it.
- 11:59Speaker 9: Looks like we're both going, okay?
- 12:03Speaker 8: There.
- 12:04Speaker 9: Now, that's better. Oh, so you come with her, mister,
- 12:10Speaker 9: all right? I'll buy it for you, too. No, thank you.
- 12:14Speaker 9: Move right in here. Come on, come on.
- 12:16Speaker 11: Give him room.
- 12:16Speaker 8: It ain't me, Morty. It's that big galoot. Well, move
- 12:19Speaker 8: him down.
- 12:21Speaker 9: Go on, old man.
- 12:22Speaker 10: Move along.
- 12:22Speaker 9: Don't bother, Pete, boys.
- 12:23Speaker 10: We got room.
- 12:24Speaker 9: Go on, old man.
- 12:26Speaker 5: Move.
- 12:26Speaker 10: Now, boys.
- 12:27Speaker 8: Ain't you hear good?
- 12:30Speaker 7: Answer me.
- 12:31Speaker 8: Can't you hear good? Now, look here.
- 12:32Speaker 9: My body ought to get a civil answer.
- 12:34Speaker 10: All right.
- 12:35Speaker 3: That's enough pushing. He thinks he's too good to talk
- 12:39Speaker 3: to me.
- 12:40Speaker 9: I'll fix him.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Here, I'll help you.
- 12:53Speaker 8: What?
- 12:55Speaker 9: That old fool. He knocked me down. I'll fix him.
- 13:00Speaker 3: He's a little tougher than he looks, isn't he?
- 13:02Speaker 9: I'll fix him good. Whatever he did to you, you.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Had it coming.
- 13:06Speaker 9: I'm gonna get him.
- 13:07Speaker 3: No. What you're gonna do is get out of here
- 13:09Speaker 3: and sober up.
- 13:12Speaker 9: Maybe I will for now, Marshal. Maybe I will for now.
- 13:16Speaker 9: But that uppity old man ain't gonna get away with this.
- 13:20Speaker 9: And there ain't nothing you can do about it.
- 13:23Speaker 3: I wouldn't count on that.
- 13:43Speaker 8: All right, Mr. Dillon, all right.
- 13:44Speaker 7: If you don't want these fish, I'll just take them
- 13:46Speaker 7: right on over and give them to Miss Kitty.
- 13:48Speaker 3: I don't think I'd do that if I were you, Chester.
- 13:51Speaker 9: Why not?
- 13:52Speaker 3: Well, she hasn't gotten over that last batch yet.
- 13:55Speaker 7: Why, it's been a good week since I gave Miss
- 13:57Speaker 7: Kitty them last fish. She ought to be more than
- 13:59Speaker 7: ready for this nice new mess.
- 14:01Speaker 3: I don't think she is.
- 14:02Speaker 8: I swear, I just don't know what.
- 14:05Speaker 7: To use for a fellow putting in all that time
- 14:07Speaker 7: fishing if nobody ain't going to appreciate it.
- 14:10Speaker 8: Oh, home gate.
- 14:11Speaker 9: Hello, Addie.
- 14:13Speaker 3: Come in.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Matt, I'm afraid I need your help.
- 14:15Speaker 3: Oh, sure, Addie. Sit down and tell me about it.
- 14:17Speaker 3: Get her a chair, will you, Chester?
- 14:19Speaker 8: Yes, sir. Here you are.
- 14:23Speaker 9: Thank you, Chester.
- 14:24Speaker 3: All right, Addie, what's the trouble?
- 14:26Speaker 9: It's my boy, Ted.
- 14:27Speaker 8: Why?
- 14:27Speaker 7: He's a nice young'un. He couldn't be in no trouble.
- 14:30Speaker 3: Never mind, Chester. What about Ted? He isn't home.
- 14:32Speaker 8: Wasn't home all day and didn't come home to supper.
- 14:35Speaker 10: That's not like him, Matt.
- 14:36Speaker 8: I'm afraid for him.
- 14:37Speaker 12: Oh, no.
- 14:38Speaker 3: At eight boys his age, you get to feeling pretty big.
- 14:41Speaker 3: Sometimes I just forget to come home right on time.
- 14:43Speaker 8: Not Ted.
- 14:45Speaker 4: Ever since his pa died, he's taken great stock in
- 14:47Speaker 4: doing the evening chores for me.
- 14:49Speaker 8: He wouldn't just run off.
- 14:50Speaker 9: Such Miss Gage, he's bound to be all right.
- 14:52Speaker 7: I see him this afternoon looking just as fine.
- 14:54Speaker 3: You saw him?
- 14:56Speaker 7: Why, sure. We was fishing together.
- 14:58Speaker 9: Did he come back to town with you?
- 14:59Speaker 8: What?
- 14:59Speaker 7: No, ma'am, he didn't.
- 15:00Speaker 8: He come back before I did. I kind of wondered
- 15:03Speaker 8: about it, too, at the time. How's that?
- 15:05Speaker 7: Well, it sure seemed like he was took with the
- 15:07Speaker 7: story I was telling him about old Pete and all.
- 15:10Speaker 3: But I just.
- 15:10Speaker 7: Started telling him the best part when Ted went on.
- 15:12Speaker 3: What part was that, Chester?
- 15:14Speaker 7: The part about how old Pete sets up all night
- 15:17Speaker 7: guarding that buried treasure.
- 15:18Speaker 9: Buried treasure.
- 15:20Speaker 3: What buried treasure?
- 15:21Speaker 7: Well, I don't really take much stock in it, but
- 15:23Speaker 7: the boy seemed to be pretty took with it.
- 15:25Speaker 8: Chester, what did you tell him?
- 15:27Speaker 7: Well, now, lots of people think old Pete's got some
- 15:29Speaker 7: pirate's gold buried up there somewhere.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Matt, that must be where the boy went.
- 15:34Speaker 3: It might have, Eddie. Chester, go get the horses.
- 15:37Speaker 8: Yes, sir.
- 15:38Speaker 3: Don't worry, Eddie. If he's there, we'll bring him back.
- 15:53Speaker 9: Come on, Reese. Stop dropping your feet.
- 15:56Speaker 8: I ain't so anxious to get there.
- 15:59Speaker 9: I told you I was gonna get even with the
- 16:01Speaker 9: old man, didn't I?
- 16:04Speaker 12: I don't see what he done so bad to get
- 16:07Speaker 12: his shack burned down.
- 16:08Speaker 9: He's got it coming to him.
- 16:10Speaker 12: But he didn't do nothing so bad. Well, he didn't
- 16:14Speaker 12: sass you. He didn't even say nothing.
- 16:16Speaker 9: Shut up and watch where you're going.
- 16:19Speaker 8: I can't help it, Mort. I can't see.
- 16:22Speaker 9: Where I'm going. You'll rouse the old man for sure.
- 16:24Speaker 12: Just don't see why we couldn't have rid up this far.
- 16:28Speaker 9: I don't want no horses stomping around. You're bad enough.
- 16:33Speaker 8: Now shut up.
- 16:33Speaker 9: I want to burn him out without no warning.
- 16:37Speaker 8: What's this?
- 16:38Speaker 5: Here.
- 16:39Speaker 8: Quiet. It's a kid.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Let go, mister.
- 16:42Speaker 8: You'll be quiet.
- 16:44Speaker 9: You'll be quiet. What are you doing here?
- 16:49Speaker 1: Why?
- 16:49Speaker 8: Walk soft. I was just watching for him to come
- 16:54Speaker 8: out and guard a treasure.
- 16:56Speaker 12: That's all.
- 16:56Speaker 3: What's he talking about, Morton?
- 16:58Speaker 9: What are you doing here?
- 17:00Speaker 8: Come on now, let's have a truth. That's the truth, Mr.
- 17:03Speaker 7: Arman.
- 17:04Speaker 9: It's pirate treasure. Who told you that?
- 17:08Speaker 8: Well, the man from Marshall's office.
- 17:09Speaker 10: He says Pokey Pete sits.
- 17:11Speaker 8: Up all night guarding it.
- 17:12Speaker 9: You'd better not try to fool me, boy.
- 17:14Speaker 8: I ain't fooling. Cross my heart, I ain't.
- 17:17Speaker 3: All right, then.
- 17:19Speaker 9: Where is it buried?
- 17:21Speaker 3: I don't know, boy.
- 17:22Speaker 8: You'd better tell me.
- 17:23Speaker 9: Come on, boy.
- 17:25Speaker 8: Let the boy go. That foolish old man ain't got
- 17:27Speaker 8: no gold. Boy, he don't even have a decent pair
- 17:30Speaker 8: of boots.
- 17:30Speaker 9: Maybe he does and maybe he don't. But it's sure
- 17:33Speaker 9: worth finding out.
- 17:34Speaker 11: Now, come on, boy.
- 17:36Speaker 9: You tell me where it's buried.
- 17:38Speaker 8: I don't know. He's the only one who knows where
- 17:40Speaker 8: it is.
- 17:41Speaker 9: The old man's the only one. Did you hear that, Reese?
- 17:43Speaker 8: I heard it.
- 17:44Speaker 3: Well, he was too uppity to talk to us before.
- 17:47Speaker 9: But we'll sure get some talk out of him this time.
- 17:50Speaker 12: I thought we were just going to sneak up and
- 17:52Speaker 12: burn the place.
- 17:53Speaker 9: We'll burn it after we talk to him, Reese. After
- 17:56Speaker 9: we make him talk. Now, come on. Please, mister.
- 18:00Speaker 8: Can I go now?
- 18:02Speaker 9: What's the matter, sonny? Don't you want to see the treasure?
- 18:06Speaker 8: Well, I want to go home.
- 18:09Speaker 9: You ain't going home yet, sonny. Not just yet.
- 18:13Speaker 6: Mr.
- 18:13Speaker 8: Dillon?
- 18:14Speaker 4: Yeah, Chester.
- 18:30Speaker 7: I'll feel just terrible bad if that boy gets himself
- 18:32Speaker 7: into fixing something I said.
- 18:33Speaker 3: Forget it, Chester.
- 18:34Speaker 8: Boys his age are likely.
- 18:36Speaker 3: To run out now, isn't it?
- 18:37Speaker 7: No, but me telling him that fool's story, that's what
- 18:39Speaker 7: started it all.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Well, if you hadn't told him, somebody else would.
- 18:43Speaker 7: I sure do hope he ain't got hurt none, though.
- 18:46Speaker 3: A night in the open isn't gonna hurt him, Chester.
- 18:48Speaker 7: I know, but that's mighty rough country, and I just
- 18:50Speaker 7: ain't too sure what old Pete'll do to it.
- 18:53Speaker 3: Look out, Mr.
- 18:53Speaker 7: Dillon.
- 18:54Speaker 8: What? There's a fire out there. Yeah. Must be Pete's shack.
- 18:58Speaker 8: Come on.
- 19:15Speaker 3: Look around, see if anyone's around here.
- 19:19Speaker 1: There, Mr.
- 19:20Speaker 8: Dillon, just outside the door. Oh, yeah. It's Pete.
- 19:29Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 19:31Speaker 3: Must have got himself out of a door somehow.
- 19:33Speaker 8: Is he dead?
- 19:35Speaker 3: No, not quite. He's been beaten, and he's burned, and
- 19:40Speaker 3: he's still breathing. There's somebody over there, Chester.
- 19:44Speaker 8: I'll go see. Oh, my gracious.
- 19:53Speaker 5: Mr.
- 19:53Speaker 1: Dillon?
- 19:54Speaker 3: Yeah, Chester.
- 20:01Speaker 7: It's Ted. I found Ted.
- 20:06Speaker 3: He's been hurt, too. Looks like he's coming out of it.
- 20:10Speaker 7: I don't see nothing.
- 20:13Speaker 1: Just take it easy, Ted.
- 20:14Speaker 3: You're all right now.
- 20:15Speaker 7: Don't hit me, mister.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Nobody's going to hit you, Ted. It's Marshal Dillon.
- 20:19Speaker 9: Marshal, don't let them get me, Marshal.
- 20:22Speaker 10: Don't let them beat me like they did old Pete.
- 20:25Speaker 3: Nobody's going to beat you, Ted.
- 20:27Speaker 8: You're all right now.
- 20:29Speaker 10: I kept asking him, beating him, asking.
- 20:32Speaker 9: Him, beating him.
- 20:34Speaker 3: Asking him what, Ted?
- 20:38Speaker 9: Where that treasure was.
- 20:39Speaker 8: Oh, my gracious.
- 20:40Speaker 10: He wouldn't tell them nothing. No matter what they did.
- 20:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:46Speaker 10: I'll bet they'll never find the treasure, Marshal.
- 20:49Speaker 3: That's right, Tess. They'll never find it. All right, come on, Tess.
- 20:53Speaker 3: Let's get them both to dock.
- 21:12Speaker 12: Come on, Mort. Drink up and let's get out of here.
- 21:16Speaker 9: Oh, quit your fussing, Reese. Ain't no hurry.
- 21:20Speaker 12: I thought we was just coming through Dodge to get supplies.
- 21:23Speaker 9: Well, we got them, didn't we?
- 21:25Speaker 12: It just ain't smart to stand around drinking.
- 21:28Speaker 8: I don't like it. I'd sooner be headed for Texas.
- 21:31Speaker 9: We'll head there. Now, just don't push me.
- 21:34Speaker 12: I want to put some distance between me and that shack.
- 21:37Speaker 9: There ain't no shack no more. Ain't nobody know we
- 21:41Speaker 9: was there.
- 21:41Speaker 3: The kid does.
- 21:43Speaker 9: I took care of the kid. Now, quit fussing at me.
- 21:48Speaker 3: You two, you're under arrest.
- 21:51Speaker 9: Marshal, there must be some mistake.
- 21:53Speaker 3: There's no mistake. Get the guns, Shuster.
- 21:57Speaker 7: Yes, sir.
- 21:57Speaker 9: You ain't getting my gun. You got no right.
- 22:00Speaker 3: You got some idea of resisting arrest, mister?
- 22:03Speaker 9: I ain't gonna let you take me in.
- 22:04Speaker 8: That'll be just fine with me.
- 22:06Speaker 9: I'd like the.
- 22:06Speaker 3: Excuse to beat you from here to the jail cell
- 22:09Speaker 3: the way you beat old Pete.
- 22:11Speaker 9: I don't know what you're talking about, Marshal.
- 22:13Speaker 3: You don't know about a burning shack, or beating the
- 22:16Speaker 3: old man, or the boy?
- 22:19Speaker 9: Why, no, Marshal. You must be looking for somebody else.
- 22:23Speaker 3: The boy says we're looking for you.
- 22:25Speaker 8: Morch, you didn't kill him.
- 22:27Speaker 3: Not the boy, not quite. But Pete died in Doc's
- 22:30Speaker 3: office just a few minutes ago. Now, come on, let's go.
- 22:36Speaker 9: You ain't taking me.
- 22:37Speaker 4: Look out, he's gone!
- 22:43Speaker 7: You got him, Mr.
- 22:44Speaker 8: Dillon? Yeah.
- 22:46Speaker 3: Bring the other one along.
- 22:47Speaker 8: Now, wait a minute. Wait a minute. Now, it wasn't
- 22:51Speaker 8: my idea.
- 22:52Speaker 3: You did your share.
- 22:53Speaker 8: It wasn't my fault. I didn't mean no harm. It
- 22:56Speaker 8: was the old man's fault.
- 22:57Speaker 3: How do you figure that?
- 22:58Speaker 12: Well, if he hadn't have been so uppity about talking,
- 23:01Speaker 12: we wouldn't have beat him so bad.
- 23:03Speaker 3: You wouldn't have killed him.
- 23:04Speaker 8: Well, sure not. We wouldn't have killed him. All he
- 23:07Speaker 8: had to do was tell us where the treasure was hid.
- 23:09Speaker 8: It was his fault.
- 23:10Speaker 3: He couldn't tell you. There was no treasure.
- 23:12Speaker 8: Well, then why didn't he say so, the old fool?
- 23:16Speaker 3: I'll tell you why he didn't say so. He couldn't talk.
- 23:19Speaker 3: He had no tongue. It had been cut out.
- 23:23Speaker 8: No tongue? Yeah.
- 23:26Speaker 3: Doc discovered it when he examined him. Must have been
- 23:30Speaker 3: the Indians who did it years ago.
- 23:34Speaker 8: Well, then it's still his fault. He could have let on.
- 23:37Speaker 3: Old Pete was too proud to let on for sympathy
- 23:40Speaker 3: from the likes of you. He didn't ask for sympathy
- 23:43Speaker 3: from anybody.
- 23:43Speaker 8: But you can't blame me.
- 23:47Speaker 3: Come on, Chester. Let's get him out of here.
- 24:14Speaker 9: Gunsmoke.
