- 0:33The. The welcome back to a hamster
- 1:04with a blunt pen knife. The Doctor Who Commentary
- 1:06Podcast. My name is Paul and I'm here
- 1:08with King Hammer himself, Joe Ford.
- 1:12Hello. Hello.
- 1:15I feel. Like you've been doing.
- 1:16That for years. Sorry, I feel like you've been
- 1:18doing that for years. That's very confident you're
- 1:21looking for a job. Well, always so.
- 1:26I mean, are we enjoying Revenge of the side, Menjo?
- 1:29Oh. Well, I'm enjoying it with you.
- 1:30Yes, I. Mean I'll watch it.
- 1:32Earlier in the week on my own, I wasn't having half as much fun
- 1:35as I am today. Oh, that's good.
- 1:37I mean, there's actually something to be said for
- 1:38watching something in a crowd as well, isn't it?
- 1:40I mean, I know two of us isn't a crowd, but you know, if you go
- 1:43to the BFI or something and sit and watch it, you laugh at bits
- 1:46you didn't even realise were furnished. 2 is enough to have
- 1:49fun though, right? Oh, apparently so.
- 1:53I mean those BFI events are great, but did you ever watch
- 1:56like do viewings at conventions? Yeah, I mean, back in the day,
- 2:01because it was cheaper to sit in the video room all night to book
- 2:04a room at the hotel, so. So you sat in there all night?
- 2:08I have done on occasion, yes, yeah.
- 2:11And I, I remember the Sontaran experiment being on and I
- 2:16remember watching Creature from the Pit because I remember
- 2:18watching that from when I was a kid and really loving it, you
- 2:21know, So, you know, it was quite interesting to watch it as an
- 2:24adult. I remember watching an episode
- 2:28of Tomb of the Cybermen with Fraser Hines doing a commentary
- 2:31on it in a very small it was the Utopia convention.
- 2:36It was one of the Phantom Ones. And afterwards you probably
- 2:41wouldn't notice about me. But I'm not great in crowds.
- 2:43Like I'm not great in talking in front of a lot of people.
- 2:46I get very nervous. And afterwards they were like,
- 2:49has anyone got any questions? And everyone was going, Oh yeah,
- 2:51Joe, Joe, Joe always ask questions for commentaries.
- 2:54I could have just crawled into a hole and died.
- 2:58I just. Couldn't think of a thing just.
- 2:59No, and and you know, it just was like the and someone said to
- 3:02me, you always ask questions, you always do commentaries, but
- 3:06crowd things just aren't me. Oh dear.
- 3:09Oh. No, I mean, do you thrive in a
- 3:11crowd? Not really, no, no.
- 3:13I'm better in a smaller group to be honest.
- 3:16So I've actually. It could be a bit overwhelming
- 3:19sometimes. It can, yeah.
- 3:21Oh. Well, well, there we go.
- 3:23That's my therapy session. Good.
- 3:25I'm glad I saw it out. I'll send my bill in for you.
- 3:28How much do you charge? Oh.
- 3:30Wow. You made that sound disgusting.
- 3:34Should we watch episode? I think we should.
- 3:38Are you counting in this time, Jen?
- 3:40How much do you charge? Wow.
- 3:41OK, I will. I will in 321.
- 3:49Off we go, and we're off again. Right.
- 3:51Well, where were we at? What was happening?
- 3:53Well, Sarah was arriving about with a big silver thing on her
- 3:57neck. That's right.
- 3:59Yeah, actually in a minute, you know, when she's sort of doing
- 4:02the the writhing actor, but like the heavy breathing.
- 4:06Yeah, it's really. Convincing, I think.
- 4:08Yeah, yeah. I mean, she's a support actress,
- 4:11isn't she? I mean you, you really buy it
- 4:14all. When you look at her
- 4:18autobiography, she came away from acting to have Sadie and
- 4:23bring up her family. Yeah.
- 4:25I think she, like Barry, let's always say she could have had an
- 4:28incredible career if she'd have really thrown herself into all
- 4:32the past that she could do. Yeah.
- 4:34She didn't, did she? She held back a bit.
- 4:37No, but it wasn't it lovely that she sort of had a career, a bit
- 4:40of an Indian summer. Oh, gorgeous.
- 4:43Yeah. Did you like the Sarah Jane of
- 4:44edges? Oh yes, Because I felt that was
- 4:47more like Doctor Who. But I used to watch, so I quite
- 4:51used to like the 25 minutes and, you know, cliffhanger.
- 4:54Sometimes it was better than the new series.
- 4:57Sometimes, yeah. When this is going to be
- 5:00controversial When series 5 of Doctor Who and series 4 of Sarah
- 5:05Jane came out at the same time, I prefer series 4 Sarah Jane.
- 5:11Really. Yeah, it's a.
- 5:11Great year. Nightmare man out of time.
- 5:14Oh yeah, yeah. Brilliant.
- 5:16Is that the one that's got the thing with?
- 5:18Because the Clyde Langer is that that's it.
- 5:21That was the last series, that was the 5th, but that was a
- 5:23banger as well. That was a good one, wasn't it?
- 5:25Yeah. And the one with Matt Smith as
- 5:27well. And Joe?
- 5:28Oh yes, with the giant turkeys, yeah.
- 5:32They called the Shan chief. Was that it?
- 5:34I think so, yeah. We'll go with that.
- 5:38But yeah, I mean, oh wow, it's always lovely.
- 5:40See Katie Manning, isn't it? So.
- 5:43Have you met her? Yeah, she's lovely.
- 5:46She always gives everyone like 5 minutes.
- 5:48That's why I owe you so long. You get the best hugs, don't
- 5:52you? She's a very generous woman with
- 5:55her time. She's lovely, yeah.
- 5:58Although you know what, she's getting £20 a time so should be
- 6:01like. Well, that's right.
- 6:03She owns it though. The stakes are pretty high now,
- 6:07though. Right before it was a plague and
- 6:09we're sort of mildly invested now.
- 6:11Sarah's infected. So they're going to send it down
- 6:15to the surface. So what is it?
- 6:18I mean, I've not been paying attention.
- 6:21What is it on the surface that's going to stop the infection?
- 6:24Is it the gold? No, I think he says that by
- 6:27putting her through the beam it can isolate the poison and
- 6:33extract it, so when she lands the poison won't be there
- 6:35anymore. OK.
- 6:37Because not a scientist, all right, but when you sort of get
- 6:42turned into bits, don't. You're in a transporter bee.
- 6:45Oh. Yes, that's right.
- 6:46You sort of disperse and go back together again.
- 6:48Yeah. So I'd like to imagine when
- 6:49Sarah and Harry were in bits, they were sort of like a laser
- 6:52gun go getting all the poison and then they were fine when
- 6:56they were put back together again.
- 6:58Very scientific. Yes, it is.
- 7:03He's up to no good. What's going on there?
- 7:05Oh, there's a great bit now where Tomas to put the two wires
- 7:09together. Oh, he does that really well,
- 7:11doesn't he? He.
- 7:12Gets a shock like right in the face.
- 7:14Yeah. That is nasty, that poison.
- 7:17He looks, yeah. You ever been that poorly?
- 7:21Did you ever have COVID? I never had COVID once, I had it
- 7:26twice. So did you.
- 7:27Yeah, it didn't look like that, but it felt like that.
- 7:30Yeah. Paul, I've got another question
- 7:33for you. Skyrocket of voruses?
- 7:38Yeah. I mean, what is going on with
- 7:40the design of the spaceships this week?
- 7:44Well, I mean, well, yeah, it's got to be that shape because
- 7:48it's aerodynamic, isn't it? Oh, that's right.
- 7:51Yes. OK, scientific rationale.
- 7:53Thank you very much. What about and it looks like a
- 7:57penis It. Does look like a yes, that was,
- 8:00that's what I was going for, yeah.
- 8:01I mean, is this the most bling city we've ever been to?
- 8:05It's very nice. Well, it's gold, isn't it?
- 8:07Everything's gold. So just laying about with, Harry
- 8:11said. You'd get a bit bored with it
- 8:12though after a while, wouldn't you?
- 8:15Yeah. But I mean, obviously it's not
- 8:16much good really on Voguer, is it?
- 8:18Because there's lots of it, so it's not actually worth
- 8:20anything. What's your only worth value if
- 8:22you take it somewhere? What's what's not valuable here,
- 8:24though, Like gravel? Would be.
- 8:26Yeah, maybe that's right. I mean.
- 8:28Salt. Mud.
- 8:29Mud. Yeah.
- 8:30What? Let's do an exchange.
- 8:34You have some muds. We'll have some gold.
- 8:35Thank you very much. Fair enough.
- 8:39Oh, that's right, they're going after Kelman now, aren't they?
- 8:42Oh, because they think he's got the bit that will allow the
- 8:45transporter to. Work to go.
- 8:47Yes, Yeah. I mean, this is quite tense
- 8:50because, I mean, you know, are they going to get, I mean,
- 8:51obviously they are going to get a down there, but yeah, Oh dear.
- 8:55Yeah, the way he grabs his face. Yeah, but it works.
- 9:01Tom does pain extremely. You remember that bit in Terror,
- 9:04the Cycles when he does the electric shooting?
- 9:07Through it he's screaming yeah. Because is that where he holds
- 9:10onto the 2 nipples and he sort of that's.
- 9:13That's the bit, yes. That's the bit.
- 9:14And he does it, does it convince me in Perimus the Mars as well,
- 9:16doesn't he? So oh.
- 9:18Well, he's. Pushed against.
- 9:20Yeah, yeah, yeah, he's he is a terrific.
- 9:24I think we forget because he's so charismatic and he's so
- 9:27funny. You forget just what an
- 9:30effortless actor he is. He.
- 9:32Is that's right. This is all rather lovely, isn't
- 9:35it? When I get down to the service
- 9:36and she and she's like stop calling me old thing and.
- 9:40This is the interaction everyone loves, isn't?
- 9:42It Yeah, Harry, I mean, would you like to think to the state
- 9:45for another series? Yes and no.
- 9:48It's a tricky 1 because yes, because I think their
- 9:51interaction is fabulous. No, because I think Sarah gets a
- 9:56ton of agency next year and load like like I I wouldn't want to
- 10:00put another companion in Caesar Doom.
- 10:02I think she's fabulous in that. Yes.
- 10:05It's a tricky one. What about you?
- 10:07I'd like to have seen him do another year.
- 10:09I'm slightly disappointed with the last story he did do the
- 10:12Anvil invasion because I didn't think he was very well served.
- 10:15I mean, I know he was playing the facsimile of himself, but as
- 10:19it's the last time they see him, you would have thought they
- 10:21would have made a bit more of him going away.
- 10:25But you know. He's just there, isn't he?
- 10:28In Android Invasion he doesn't really have an active role.
- 10:31No, no, he's just gone, isn't he?
- 10:33As for Benson, poor old Benson. Oh, well, he Yeah, that's right.
- 10:37He's. So weird, isn't it?
- 10:39The second you go on film in these caves, it feels like we're
- 10:42in a really expensive production now.
- 10:44That's right. Now these little boats, is it?
- 10:46Is this not one of these things that this Slayden was on?
- 10:50She nearly went down the little owl at the back and some the
- 10:53stuntman had to jump in to rescue.
- 10:55Yeah. She tells the story in
- 10:57autobiography. She goes, I told Michael Lee
- 11:00Bryant that that was too dangerous and he said, no,
- 11:02you'll be fine, you'll be fine. They said it's fine and then
- 11:05obviously she fell in, nearly died and then he didn't see, he
- 11:08scarpered. The health and safety people
- 11:11looked after her and she saw him in the pub later that night when
- 11:14she'd had a bath and everything and she tore his head off.
- 11:19Well, I'm not surprised. I mean, I mean, you just
- 11:22wouldn't do that now anyway, would you, with your principal
- 11:24actors or? I think there's just a lot of
- 11:26safety rules now, isn't? There, Yeah.
- 11:29Oh, look at this stand off in the corridor.
- 11:32Machine guns there. Oh.
- 11:34Right, what's going to happen? I'm not sure why this all seems
- 11:37so much more gripping when I'm watching it with you.
- 11:40Well, I mean, that's my natural charm, isn't it, I?
- 11:43Must. Be oh hang on, I've got a bit of
- 11:45a problem. My iPlayer has gone off.
- 11:47Oh, Oh my God, hang on. Hang on a minute, sorry.
- 11:51Pause. Pause, everybody.
- 11:54Well, there we go. We're going again.
- 11:55We're. Going OK, right.
- 11:56Oh, let's just assume we're in the same place.
- 11:58We'll be roughly in the right place.
- 12:00I've got Vogans sort of going down the corridor now.
- 12:03Yeah, well, they're getting on their little train now.
- 12:04That's. Right, that's quite nice
- 12:06actually. Is that the same train from
- 12:08Genesis to the Daleks? I think so.
- 12:10Isn't that the the thing they use in the studio to do the?
- 12:14Is that right? What to do Like tracking shots
- 12:17and. Things.
- 12:18Yeah, yeah, I think so. Or the thing they used to sort
- 12:20of transport scenery about well. That's a good use of.
- 12:24Something resources, yeah. OK, the doctors now figuring it
- 12:30all out. He's a clever man, right?
- 12:39I'm going to kick you in with another question if you're ready
- 12:42for this. Yeah, go for it.
- 12:44OK, Andy Parkinson asks. I've always liked this story.
- 12:49I'd rather watch Revenge of the Cyberman than The Genesis of the
- 12:52Daleks. Where does this sit in your
- 12:55Cyberman story rankings? It's although I really like it.
- 13:04I mean, there's no way you can say it's on a par with Earth
- 13:07shock, for example, or, or do you know what?
- 13:12I really love that. I know this is not popular, but
- 13:15I really love the moon base. I think the moon base.
- 13:18I actually prefer moon base, the tomb at the side and then.
- 13:22I I do understand that like I like Tomb because it is a bit
- 13:25like a bee movie, is stylish as hell.
- 13:29The moon base. Oh yeah, yeah, I love the moon
- 13:32base. And I mean, I love the fact they
- 13:33think you can sort of stop the air getting out by putting the
- 13:35tea tray over a hole. But.
- 13:38Jason Thompson assures me that is scientifically.
- 13:41Accurate. Oh, is that correct?
- 13:42That can. Be done.
- 13:43He would know, all right. I wouldn't question.
- 13:44Him on the science. Fair enough.
- 13:46Yeah. So this is like a mid range
- 13:48sideman story. I mean, I've put silver Nemesis.
- 13:51Underneath this. Yes.
- 13:53So what I think what we'd have to have is we'd have to have
- 13:57Earth shock, the invasion, the Moon base 2 this and then Silver
- 14:05Nemesis down the bottom. Oh no, I quite like Attack on
- 14:07the Sideman action, so that'd be some.
- 14:08Attack above or below this. I'd be above this.
- 14:12OK, now I'm going. To the episode want to be above
- 14:14this Episode 2 be below this. I'm going to throw a few more,
- 14:17but new series sideman stories about you now.
- 14:19All right, You've got to say above or below Revenge of the
- 14:22Sideman. All right, OK.
- 14:24Rise of the Cybermen, Age of Steel.
- 14:28Slightly above her Oh. OK, closing time.
- 14:33Below. Ascension of the Cybermen.
- 14:37Below. Power of the Doctor.
- 14:42Oh, it's a great story. It's not a great sideman story,
- 14:46but it's a great story above, I say.
- 14:49I love him bursting through the walls, you know, when T was
- 14:51trying to get away. That's so great.
- 14:54Oh, shoot, you never met him, did he?
- 14:57Oh. Oh.
- 14:57Well, enough of time. The Doctor falls.
- 14:59Oh wow. Above above.
- 15:01Yeah, everyone loves that one, don't they?
- 15:03OK, Paul Arthur here asks. Would revenge be better loved if
- 15:08it was in a weaker season? I mean, Hinchcliff doesn't
- 15:16really have a weak season, does he?
- 15:18You don't want to ask me that question.
- 15:22I'm not as crazy on Hinchcliffe as other people.
- 15:24I think 14's fairly weak, but OK, that's fair enough.
- 15:29To say, yeah, it'd probably be more popular in a weak season,
- 15:32yes, that's correct. It's a bit like Android
- 15:34Invasion, isn't it? I think if you put Android
- 15:36Invasion in a weak season it would stand out more than it
- 15:41does in 13. Yeah, I mean, the problem with
- 15:44Android invasion is it doesn't stand up to too much scrutiny,
- 15:46does it? Well, especially when you get to
- 15:49Episode 4. I don't know what's going on in
- 15:51that last episode, the first episode.
- 15:54Oh, that's brilliant. I mean, that's almost Avengers,
- 15:56isn't? It OK, Daniel Knight, this will
- 16:00be my last question for the episode.
- 16:01All right, OK then, because the side men are about to arrive.
- 16:04We need to talk about that. Daniel Knight says rank the
- 16:08David Colling. He says rank the David Colling
- 16:11performances. So Voris, Paul and Mordrin from
- 16:15Mordrin Undead. OK, so Paul's going to be first.
- 16:19I knew you were going to say that.
- 16:21I mean, it's got to be, hasn't it?
- 16:22I mean, that's a really good performance.
- 16:26Paul Moldrin at the bottom. And for us in the middle.
- 16:31Oh no, no, sorry for us at the bottom and Moldrin in the
- 16:33middle, because Moldrin is actually quite a good
- 16:35performance. Yeah, I think he's pretty great,
- 16:38although Paul is the best, right?
- 16:40Yeah. Oh yeah, yeah, Paul must be the
- 16:41best. Yeah, the whole Robophobia
- 16:44thing's brilliant. God, when he sees that blood on
- 16:46the hand, Jesus Christ. Oh, and Daniel also asks, let's
- 16:51finish aside, would David Collins have been a good on
- 16:55screen doctor? I think so.
- 16:58Yeah, he's great at sapphire Steel, isn't he?
- 17:00As when he's playing. Oh.
- 17:02Yeah. I can't think what's it what's?
- 17:05He's not. He's not.
- 17:06Silver is. He he's, yeah.
- 17:08He's. Silver, yeah.
- 17:09Gold's that big bloke, isn't he? Yeah, yeah.
- 17:12And you could, you could see him being Doctor Who, can't you?
- 17:14In that in that part, he's called.
- 17:17Charismatic in that. Isn't he?
- 17:18Is he's he was a superb actor anyway.
- 17:21I mean, did you ever see him at a convention?
- 17:23No, I haven't. No, I mean he lovely bloke, he
- 17:26couldn't remember a thing about anything.
- 17:31He looks a bit amused as to why he was there.
- 17:32Really. I've got no anecdotes, but buy
- 17:34me a drink. Come on.
- 17:36Toby said that he did an interview with him and everyone
- 17:40went, oh God, he's the life and soul of the party.
- 17:41You'll love him. He said he just clammed up
- 17:43completely and gave him nothing. But he said to his wife after he
- 17:47died, he said, oh, I tried to interview him, but and he was
- 17:50she went. That really surprises me because
- 17:52he was, he talked to anyone. Paul, can I ask you, have you
- 17:57seen cheaper looking stalagmites and tights as the ones that are
- 18:01in the room with Sarah and Harry?
- 18:03Never, but they are pretty. I mean, it kind of lets it down
- 18:08a bit when you go from location to the studio on the planet,
- 18:11doesn't? It that's frequently the case.
- 18:14Well, yes, I mean. But you remember in Planet of
- 18:16Evil when you you're on film in that jungle and then suddenly
- 18:20you're in the studio. Yeah, and let's be honest, the
- 18:23jungle's the best thing in that, isn't it?
- 18:25Yeah, Are you sure your name isn't Sigh Heart?
- 18:29Oh, Planet of Eagle is boring. Oh I don't mind it.
- 18:32People get turned into desiccated skeletons.
- 18:35Well, I suppose that's quite fun, yeah.
- 18:38Oh, it's just Kevin Stoney now, Is it the old?
- 18:40Man, Yeah, that's it. Yeah.
- 18:41The Trapple is right is they've almost glued his mouth together.
- 18:44He can barely get a word out what's going on?
- 18:51You can't even see his one key eye, can you?
- 18:55And you know, those are some serious eyebrows they've got as
- 18:58well. They are.
- 19:01Yeah, I don't know if the Vogans rank as one of the better Doctor
- 19:05Who. No, I feel not.
- 19:08I mean, oh, here we go. He's about to insult her calves.
- 19:12I'm going to play another game with you.
- 19:13All right? OK.
- 19:14I'm going to name Doctor Who races and you tell me if they're
- 19:16better or worse than the Vogans. All right?
- 19:19Right. OK.
- 19:20The Jacondens. Design wise, they're better.
- 19:24Oh OK, the band rules. Worse.
- 19:29The Vervoids. Are better.
- 19:32OK Oh the the Shimmerans from Terror and the Bannermen.
- 19:40Oh yeah, I got no worse. The new series Zygons.
- 19:45Oh, worse. Not a found.
- 19:49No, I mean they look so much better in the 70s when they look
- 19:52a bit sort of glistening and moist.
- 19:54I mean they look, they look like a bloke in a rubber suit, don't
- 19:56they? And.
- 19:57Yeah, it's weird, isn't it? How all that money?
- 20:01And they can't do it. Rubber suits look faker the more
- 20:04money you have. All right, last two the zombie.
- 20:09Worse. And finally, oh, the mutants
- 20:13from the mutants. Oh, they're quite good, aren't
- 20:15they? Yes, I think they're better.
- 20:17OK, so the Falcons are sort of mid range then?
- 20:20Yeah, yeah, yeah. So they they just look like
- 20:26they've got an arse on don't they really, Even with the sort
- 20:28of mouth being exposed? It's what Hinchcliffe says,
- 20:32isn't it? Is that I, I think his instinct
- 20:36to start the story with, can we do this?
- 20:39If we can't do this with, then we won't write it, you know, And
- 20:43because he was handed the scripts for this season, wasn't
- 20:46he? They were Barry and Terence
- 20:49basically sorted out the scripts for this season.
- 20:52So I don't think he had a lot of say here.
- 20:53No, I think they thought because they really know who's Doctor
- 20:57was going to be, they're just line up the old favourites,
- 20:59didn't they? But I mean, Hinchcliffe
- 21:02definitely puts his own twist on it, doesn't he?
- 21:04Because Genesis as Daleks is much better.
- 21:07Is much. It's in his style, isn't it?
- 21:10More than. It's a lot darker than Planet of
- 21:13the. Daleks, yeah, although.
- 21:15I do have a fondness for Planet of the Daleks.
- 21:18Oh I like Planet of the Daleks. It's like a Daleks greatest hits
- 21:20isn't it? It's got an Ice Kano in it, for
- 21:23God's sakes. It has.
- 21:24You get all that shooting down the coral, ain't it?
- 21:28Look at this zoom in on Tom's face.
- 21:30He knows it's the Cybermen. I wonder if even the Doctor was
- 21:35a bit disappointed it was this. These Cybermen though, you know.
- 21:39Yeah. What's that line he has about
- 21:41them being pathetic? Oh, a load of Tin pop skull
- 21:45soldiers skulking around the Galaxy before they try to shake
- 21:48him to death, isn't it? Yeah.
- 21:50It had to be the Simon and the rubbish ones at that.
- 21:52That's right. Oh look, I turned the CSO on it.
- 21:56Oh, yeah. Is it?
- 21:57What? Just a backdrop there.
- 21:58Yeah. Like, credit to Michael Bryant.
- 22:02Like, I know these aren't the best sets in the world.
- 22:04He he's trying to make it visually interesting.
- 22:06Yeah. It just jars, doesn't it,
- 22:09between Oh, I've got a question for you actually Joe, when you
- 22:12were a kid and you were sat watching Doctor Who, my mum
- 22:16could never see this. When I point out to her when it
- 22:18went from studio to location I could see a difference.
- 22:21I could too, yeah. But I'd say to them, look that
- 22:24looks different to that and she'd be like.
- 22:26No, I wouldn't even bother saying that's my mum because she
- 22:30was so TV illiterate. Now, that's not to say she
- 22:32didn't like TV. She did, but she had no interest
- 22:35in sort of the nuts and bolts of the production of Telly.
- 22:39But I mean, I think you'd even say this to some people now and
- 22:42they go, no, it's a picture what you're talking about.
- 22:45Yeah, it's it just has a smoothness about it, film,
- 22:49doesn't it? And there's a sharpness to
- 22:52video. Yeah.
- 22:55It's like, have you ever seen keeping up appearances?
- 22:58Yes. The book here is the well, I
- 23:01don't think that's dated because that's shot on video mostly on
- 23:05location. And so it just looks like
- 23:07something's shot on location now, whereas if you watch stuff
- 23:11that's done on film in the 80s, it looks old.
- 23:15Yeah, yeah, I agree. Yeah.
- 23:19Oh, that spaceship. Oh, oh.
- 23:22Extreme down, yeah. Do you know?
- 23:27What's great, I think it's going to insert itself into the Ark.
- 23:30Well, at least into the docking Bay, Yes.
- 23:32Oh, I mean, what would you do if you saw that coming towards
- 23:36your? Good grief, we can't hear the
- 23:40music, but Carrie Blighton's going a bit crazy right now.
- 23:43We all we love a bit of Carrie Blighton, don't we?
- 23:47This is the one, isn't it, where Philip Hinchcliffe insisted on
- 23:51electronic music added to the score?
- 23:54I think so, yes. Is this Kerry Blighton's last
- 23:59one? I think it is, yeah.
- 24:01I don't think Barry Let's or Philip Hinchcliffe liked what he
- 24:04did. Actually, oh, look, you might
- 24:07know the answer to this. I suspect this is Kerry
- 24:09Blighton. But Barry, let's have somebody
- 24:11who kept bothering him to do the music on all of them.
- 24:14Convinced. I am convinced that that is him.
- 24:17Yeah, yeah. I mean, come on.
- 24:26Doesn't he? And that is terrible.
- 24:30How does that one go? It's.
- 24:36Very bad. Actually, they don't look too
- 24:38bad on film. The Vogans.
- 24:40No, of course with film you can get a bit high, can't you?
- 24:45And death. I don't want to be to camp, but
- 24:50are those glitter guns that they've got?
- 24:53Like they love glitter guns. Because that's what Tom says
- 24:55later, isn't it? They invented the glitter gun.
- 24:59That sounds like the campus battle in history.
- 25:02They just glitter each other today.
- 25:05Actually, that's a good question I'd like to ask you.
- 25:07Yeah. How much camp can you handle in
- 25:10Doctor Who? I'd be a lot, you know.
- 25:12You know, I love camp, but where's your limit?
- 25:15Because Doctor Who can be very camp.
- 25:18I think I love Cat. I mean, there's, there's room
- 25:21for everything and Doctor isn't there, so I don't mind camp.
- 25:24Do you prefer it when it's a bit grittier?
- 25:28Though I do, I mean, I loved so I loved Caves Vans Rosani
- 25:32because that was really gritty and then so I love season 22 as
- 25:35a result. I mean, I think they slightly
- 25:38overdid it in every story. But you see, I quite like Mark
- 25:43and the Rani, I mean and that's a bit more camper than, but then
- 25:48timing around is far too calm performance.
- 25:52OK, I'm gauging it now. But then having said that, I
- 25:55absolutely love Doubt and the banner men and that's campus
- 25:57tits isn't it? So that.
- 25:58Is the campus thing I've ever seen.
- 26:02Hang on, you couldn't handle time in the rally, but you like
- 26:04they're on the bannermen. I mean when that Navarino goes
- 26:10through that scanner and turns into a person.
- 26:12Oh, that's brilliant, isn't it? Oh, it is fabulous there in the
- 26:17Banner men and So what? What tips time in the Ronnie Too
- 26:21far then? Is it all the pantomime stuff?
- 26:24I think so. And I'm not very keen on
- 26:26Sylvester Sylvester's pratfalls and I, I just feel, I mean, I
- 26:32enjoy watching it and it's fun, but but yeah, it's a bit too
- 26:37calm for me. I so.
- 26:39You've never been, you know, running across an evil genius
- 26:42laboratory and tripped over Paul.
- 26:44No, strangely enough. You what?
- 26:46You managed to stay on your feet.
- 26:48Yes, mind, your hand just regenerated so you know.
- 26:51Well, may I say it's a fabulous new body that you got there.
- 26:55Thank you very much. Who was you before?
- 26:59Oh, I was less good looking. Other members of the Ham fam?
- 27:04Yeah, I understand. Oh God, the side men are here.
- 27:08How did I miss this? Oh look, they're firing from the
- 27:10heads as well. I quite like that when they can
- 27:12shoot from the top of their heads.
- 27:14I mean, it does appear that they've just murdered Tom Baker.
- 27:18Yes. In his first season.
- 27:22It's always slightly odd when they do that because I mean,
- 27:24that's and they're never going to kill off their lead man, so.
- 27:28What when the cliffhanger is, is the Doctor?
- 27:30Being dead, I mean. Well, maybe they weren't happy
- 27:33with the performance. You know they're.
- 27:35Like, well, could have been get. Rid of him now.
- 27:37Now may I do one more question before we out the episode?
- 27:40Please do. OK, it's on the subject of
- 27:44Carrie Blighton. Well, we've just.
- 27:45Been. Oh, yes, yes.
- 27:47So, Fraser, everyone wants you to rank everything today.
- 27:51I think. I think they're trying to figure
- 27:53out sort of where your doctorate is.
- 27:55Yeah, yeah. Well Fraser, I love to dominate
- 27:58is my friend. Oh boy, another one OK.
- 28:03Anyway. What, he asks is can you rank
- 28:06the Carrie Blighton scores? Yeah, in 3rd place, the
- 28:11Sirorians, in 2nd place this, and in first place it has to be
- 28:18the classic that is Death to the Dark.
- 28:24I mean, joking aside, it's nice to have a change from Deadly
- 28:28Dudley, isn't it? You know, it's like.
- 28:31It is. It is the only.
- 28:33I don't think it's a really good scores, but it's just nice to
- 28:36have that contrast. The only like deviation I think
- 28:40they're really like. It doesn't work for me.
- 28:43It's the mutants because it's all those weird sort of
- 28:45electronic bleeps and blobs. Yeah, that's very.
- 28:48Strange, isn't it? It's sort of ambient sound.
- 28:52That's right. Very strange.
- 28:55Yeah, yeah. Who else used to do music in
- 28:58this period? Because.
- 29:00Because Douglas Cowfield wouldn't use Jeffrey.
- 29:05Yes, that's right. Great music.
- 29:07Yeah, that's really good. Yeah, he did too, didn't he?
- 29:10But he went on to do some great work after that as well.
- 29:13And it was mostly Dudley, wasn't it?
- 29:15Yeah, it was mostly Dudley, Yeah.
- 29:17But I think maybe he did his best scores under Hinchcliffe.
- 29:20Like Pyramids is a great. Score.
- 29:22Yeah. I love the Brain of Morbius
- 29:25score as well. Yeah, Yeah, that's a good one.
- 29:28I mean, do we, do we think his definitive score would be
- 29:31sitting at death? Because I think that's.
- 29:33Yes. I know I heard him at a
- 29:35convention playing at on the hotel bar.
- 29:37Really. What Dudley playing here?
- 29:39Yeah, will not be calling Manchester in the early 2000s.
- 29:43He was a guest and he was up there.
- 29:46No, there he was banging out on the piano and the manager in the
- 29:50hotel came up and told him he wasn't allowed.
- 29:52To oh. Said he wasn't allowed to be on
- 29:55there. Do you know who I am?
- 29:57All right. This is the best Doctor Who's
- 30:00scorer of all time. Yeah.
- 30:01Oh, my God, that. I mean, if that happened now,
- 30:03everyone's iPhones will be out in a second.
- 30:05Yeah, it was magical. Brilliant, that sounds great.
- 30:09I was on the fan scene. I only came in to Doctor Who
- 30:14fandom when I started the podcast.
- 30:17This is how I've met all these wonderful people.
- 30:19But before then, Doctor Who tended to be a pretty solitary
- 30:22affair for me. So I feel as if I missed out on
- 30:25a lot of great events in the day.
- 30:29Ah, well. Well, look, would you care to
- 30:32now skip on into episode 3 and to listen to more Carrie Blight
- 30:35and music? And I think we're going to have
- 30:37a lot of side man action this episode.
- 30:39Excellent. That's what we like.
- 30:42I'll cut it there. I will cut it.
- 30:44Right there.
