- 0:00Psalm 16 from the book of Psalms.
- 0:04First, let's pray. Dear Lord, please be with us as
- 0:08we read through these verses that David wrote and let your
- 0:13Holy Spirit open our eyes, our ears, our hearts to what you
- 0:17have to say. We ask this in Jesus name, Amen.
- 0:22So I will read through this first and then I will go through
- 0:26the study Bibles, questions and answers, and then I will just
- 0:31talk a little bit. I don't have a lot to say about
- 0:33this this chapter, so we will just get started right away.
- 0:40Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge.
- 0:46I say to the Lord. You are my Lord.
- 0:49Apart from you I have no good thing.
- 0:53I say of the holy people who are in the land.
- 0:56They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.
- 1:00Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more.
- 1:06I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods, or take up
- 1:10their names on my lips. Lord, You alone are my portion
- 1:16and my cup. You make my lot secure.
- 1:19The boundary lines have fallen for me in present places.
- 1:23Surely I have a delightful inheritance.
- 1:27I will praise the Lord who counsels me.
- 1:30Even at night. My heart instructs me.
- 1:33I keep my eyes always on the Lord.
- 1:36With Him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
- 1:39Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices.
- 1:43My body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me
- 1:48to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one
- 1:52see decay. You make known to me the path of
- 1:56life. You will fill me with joy in
- 1:59your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
- 2:03And that's the end of Psalm 16. So here is what the study Bible
- 2:09says. It's the title of David.
- 2:15Some scholars associate Psalm 16 and 30 with the dedication of
- 2:21the Citadel, David's palace on Zion.
- 2:25David regarded the palace as God's pledge of the stability
- 2:29and exaltation of his Kingdom. Apparently a severe illness or
- 2:35mortal danger had delayed him from moving into the new
- 2:40building. Does the question, does knowing
- 2:44God enable us to enjoy our possessions in a unique way?
- 2:48David considered his relationship with God to be the
- 2:51most important dimension of of his life.
- 2:54Since God desired the best for David and provided for his
- 2:58welfare, David recognized every blessing, every good thing in
- 3:03life as a gift from God. In addition, the gifts we
- 3:08receive from God are a trust. They are ultimately owned by
- 3:13God. Knowing this frees us from being
- 3:17possessed by our possessions. Who qualifies us as holy people?
- 3:23Holy is often applied to God himself when referring to
- 3:27people. The word does not mean sinless
- 3:30perfection. Rather, it means those who are
- 3:33God's people set apart through dedication and service to God.
- 3:40What were libations of blood? Blood of sacrifices poured on
- 3:44altars? David was declaring his
- 3:47allegiance to the Lord. He would never make sacrifices
- 3:51to other gods. How was God portion and cup to
- 3:55David? Guest at ancient banquets
- 3:59received their portion of food and their cup of drink.
- 4:05David was expressing satisfaction with his lot in
- 4:10life by comparing God to the host of a banquet and that we
- 4:15see that pattern continue we're on in Scripture in other parts
- 4:20in the New Testament and a lot of people talk about the wedding
- 4:23supper of the lamb, the wedding feast.
- 4:26There's a lot of that and, and, and the cup is also can also, I
- 4:31mean, the cup was symbolic of a marital covenant between a
- 4:36person. The Galilean wedding, the
- 4:39groomsmen or the bridegroom would give the cup to the person
- 4:45that he was going to be engaged to, and if she would drink from
- 4:49it, that means she accepted his cup and they were in a covenant
- 4:54relationship through that. And then he would go to prepare
- 4:57a place for her, similar to what Jesus was saying to his
- 5:00disciples about what he was going to do.
- 5:04So we'll go back to this. How did David's heart instruct
- 5:07him even at night? Perhaps David meant that long
- 5:11after he had meditated on the Word of God, his inner being
- 5:14continued to apply it. God's word.
- 5:17Word affected even his subconscious mind.
- 5:20He may have been recalling the times when, as a shepherd alone
- 5:25at night under the stars, he had marvelled at God's handiwork.
- 5:29David's nightly meditations may have inspired several psalms.
- 5:35This is interesting because I guess I'll just talk about it
- 5:39now. It says, I will praise the Lord
- 5:41who counsels me even at night, my heart instructs me.
- 5:47So it does seem like it's David's heart that is
- 5:50instructing him at, at night, like his thoughts and things.
- 5:55And I will praise the Lord who counsels me like he's getting
- 5:58the counseling from the Lord. And I find this very
- 6:04interesting, like even at night my heart instructs me.
- 6:07So last night, ironically, I had a dream that was symbolic and a
- 6:16metaphor of things. And it was kind of a warning, a
- 6:19personal warning to me from God. And I understood it because
- 6:26these sorts of things started happening when I decided that I
- 6:31would no longer live like a hypocrite and that I would be
- 6:34serious about my commitment to God.
- 6:36And then I got baptized and it was the night of my baptism that
- 6:39dreams started coming. And I've had over hundreds of
- 6:45dreams and many of them had the name of Jesus.
- 6:49They they were either encouraging about biblical
- 6:53truths. They were things that I wasn't
- 6:58familiar with it, but were in the Bible that I would research
- 7:01and say, is that really in the Bible?
- 7:03There were scriptural verses that would come to me that I
- 7:07didn't have memorized and truths that were repeated in multiple
- 7:11dreams. One dream would build upon
- 7:16another dream and they would be separated by weeks or months.
- 7:21I would also start to see a scene from a dream in my real
- 7:26life. That's what really kind of
- 7:28startled me at the beginning of this was, wow, I saw this in a
- 7:31dream and now I'm seeing this in real life.
- 7:33The whole dream didn't play out, but only a scene did.
- 7:36And that's when I started thinking, I think there's
- 7:39something more to this than just me and my imagination at night.
- 7:45And so when I read this in Psalm 16 about I will praise the Lord
- 7:51who counsels me even at night, my heart instructs me, it is
- 7:56true that God does speak to us in at night.
- 8:00And I do believe that he does these things.
- 8:03You know, I've received warnings, I've received
- 8:05encouragement, I've received Bible verses, All sorts of
- 8:11things have happened. And this is over since 2021 and
- 8:16and it continues today. And it's one of those things
- 8:20that is special. I don't, I don't ever know when
- 8:23they're going to come. And it felt like it's been a
- 8:25while since I've had a dream and all of a sudden, I mean, it's
- 8:28really only been maybe a month or so, but all of a sudden it
- 8:32came and I actually had two different short dreams.
- 8:34So, but the point is that God does these little things, not
- 8:41little, they're big really, but he communicates with us and, and
- 8:46it's something that is so special that in so many
- 8:50different ways and he communicates with people in
- 8:52different ways. But when you see it reflected in
- 8:56the Psalms and David, who was known as a man after God's own
- 8:59heart, I mean, I want to be that person too.
- 9:01I want to be, you know, a, a woman after God's heart, you
- 9:05know, like, and, and so it's, it's kind of reassuring to see
- 9:10this and to see David's relationship.
- 9:12I remember when I first read Psalms, I thought about David
- 9:15and I thought, God, how can he feel like that?
- 9:18Like that's so strange to me and it seems so far away from how I
- 9:26would feel Like I, I know like one of the verses, I don't have
- 9:29verses memorized very well. I paraphrase a lot of them.
- 9:32But he said something about like your, your commands are, you
- 9:37know, wonderful or something like that.
- 9:39And I was like, what How would you say that?
- 9:41Because at the time I was like really struggling with some
- 9:43things. And, and so to hear that David
- 9:47was saying, Oh, I love all your, your, your laws, your precepts
- 9:51that, you know, like I meditate on them all the time.
- 9:54And I remember thinking, gosh, wow, that's different.
- 9:58And now I'm becoming that. And, and it is, it's also
- 10:04interesting. I listened to another podcast
- 10:07this morning and and they were talking about abiding in Christ
- 10:11and a few podcasts ago, I what it I had covered on the podcast
- 10:17was what in him meant in Christ. And you know, abiding in Christ
- 10:23is another way of saying that as well.
- 10:25And they came along with similar topics.
- 10:28And it made me wonder, you know, is the Holy Spirit speaking to
- 10:32us about abiding in him, abiding in Christ and having that close
- 10:38relationship? And the podcast talked about the
- 10:41way that you abide in Christ is being in his word.
- 10:45And certainly that is my goal, to stay in the Word.
- 10:50I was in the word yesterday, but I didn't do a podcast because I
- 10:55spent so much time doing something else that was
- 10:58preparational in in the word. But it is so important every day
- 11:03to be in the word. And that's the whole reason why
- 11:07I actually do this podcast for me to be accountable and also
- 11:12for others. Hopefully it's beneficial to
- 11:15someone else as well. And anyway, let's go back to a
- 11:20couple more questions and answers.
- 11:23It says nor will you let your faithful one see decay.
- 11:27The apostles of the New Testament saw David's words as a
- 11:30prophetic allusion to the resurrection of the Messiah.
- 11:35And that's found in Acts chapter 2 and also Acts chapter 13.
- 11:41So they, they saw this, that about this foreshadowing or
- 11:47this, I guess, almost like a vision of what the future would
- 11:50be relative to Jesus, who is a descendant from King David, from
- 11:57the tribe of Judah. What did David mean when he
- 12:01wrote that God would not abandon him to the realm of the dead?
- 12:05David was probably thanking God for his protection and for
- 12:10sparing him from death. But David also spoke of eternal
- 12:15pleasures, which indicates that he anticipated being with God
- 12:19forever after death. So isn't that incredible that
- 12:24this was revealed to David back in, you know, the BC time frame
- 12:32way before Christ was here on earth and told everyone about
- 12:36the resurrection and, and proved that it was true by him doing
- 12:40that. But David was aware of it.
- 12:42This is how God can speak to us. Like David didn't have the
- 12:47evidence of Jesus for his belief he was a descendant of David,
- 12:53but he had this relationship with God.
- 12:56God chose him. If you remember how David came
- 12:58to be king, God was not happy with Saul's disobedience.
- 13:05And so he he said, no, Saul's not going to do this anymore.
- 13:08God appoints kings, he appoints leaders and he takes them away
- 13:13too. And so at this time Saul was
- 13:18being disobedient to God. And so God decided I'm going to
- 13:22have David. So he had Samuel go and find his
- 13:25replacement, Saul's replacement. And David's own family didn't
- 13:31even put him forth. He had other brothers and his
- 13:34father Jesse put all these people in front of him, all of
- 13:38his his sons and and Samuel, he was waiting for the Lord to let
- 13:43him know which one was to be king and none of them.
- 13:48And so Samuel asked the dad, he's like, well, are there any
- 13:51others? And they're like, oh, there's
- 13:52David, but he's little. He's out in, you know, with the
- 13:55field and he's out with the sheep.
- 13:57And, you know, they were kind of like dismissing him.
- 13:59And so he's like, no, call him in here.
- 14:01And so he came in and that was the one he was the one, the
- 14:06Lord. He was the chosen one.
- 14:08That's also evidence of God having plans, specific people
- 14:14for a special purpose. And David was one of those
- 14:17people where God chose him out of all the people that he was
- 14:21going to do something with him. And David wasn't a perfect
- 14:25person. He was consistently after God's
- 14:30own heart, but it didn't mean that he was holy or anything
- 14:35like that. He committed adultery.
- 14:37He had the woman's white, the woman's husband killed in war
- 14:44and then he had a he suffered the consequence, his child that
- 14:48when he impregnated her died and that was devastating to him.
- 14:52But then her next child, Solomon, I think it might have
- 14:56been the next child. I don't know the birth order,
- 14:58but one of their children, Solomon, then he became a king
- 15:03and the descendant and he was both good and bad too.
- 15:07So not all of the people that are the histories are the
- 15:12ancestors were none of them were perfect people like another
- 15:17study that I had done. No one is good but God.
- 15:20God alone is good. But even though David gets a lot
- 15:23of time in the Bible where people talk about him, he was
- 15:29not perfect and but God had a special purpose for him.
- 15:34And God may have a special purpose for you and it's
- 15:38important to seek God because God will let you know what that
- 15:41is. And God the Holy Spirit will
- 15:43encourage you in that way. And, and others will see that
- 15:47that is something that you seem to be gifted in the gifts of the
- 15:52Spirit. That's what God gives people
- 15:55when he has a plan for them or a purpose for them.
- 15:57In fact, all of us have a purpose.
- 15:59It's whether or not we seek God and find out what that is.
- 16:02So also, as the podcast this morning said, you know, you
- 16:06don't want to waste your life here on earth because God does
- 16:09have a purpose for you. So it's important to find out
- 16:12what your purpose is and God will reveal it to you anyway.
- 16:18I think that is that is all that it will all the questions and
- 16:22answers that are covered in the study Bible.
- 16:27I'm going to go back to what I had mentioned before about
- 16:31looking at God and Lord and this time is is interesting because
- 16:37it seems like most of the references lately have been if
- 16:44you want to say Jehovah or Yahweh or the way we may want to
- 16:50really say it. And this is something that just
- 16:52came in my mind today was and when that was spelled.
- 17:03It's a pronunciation thing. If you want to say that Yehovah
- 17:08is like a current modern way of Hebrew saying that.
- 17:12But apparently in the ancient times, the the IT sounded like
- 17:16AW instead of the V. So Yahweh is the way scholars
- 17:21say should be the pronunciation of it, but I think that's even
- 17:26incorrect. And I don't know that anyone
- 17:28really knows what it is except the original people who heard it
- 17:31from God. I guess that was what Moses who
- 17:36heard it first, the name of God, that it will be his name
- 17:41forever. But if there's only four letters
- 17:44and there are no vowels, anything else that we put in
- 17:47there is human messing with things.
- 17:50And while there may be good intentions with that, it does
- 17:54lead us down the wrong path. So perhaps everyone who's saying
- 17:59Yehovah or Yahweh, perhaps everybody is wrong and perhaps
- 18:05it's actually that's it, not it. I mean, that's, that's this.
- 18:12That's the completeness of it. Maybe it is someone once said
- 18:16this because I didn't come up with it, but someone once said
- 18:19it's almost like a breath. It sounds like a breath.
- 18:22And I think that's really interesting because God is
- 18:26Spirit. The spirit is called Ruach.
- 18:31And I'm not saying that correctly, but RUAH.
- 18:34And that is also a reference to the spirit or to wind.
- 18:40So it's also like that life giving breath.
- 18:44And a lot of times names were a description of someone.
- 18:51And since God is spirit, it would make sense that his name
- 18:54would sound like that would be like or, you know, just like a
- 19:01breath. That's what it sounds like and
- 19:03that's kind of hard to say in a sentence.
- 19:06You know, it's almost like downs rather than a name.
- 19:09And God would be set apart, wouldn't he?
- 19:12His name maybe isn't like ours. Maybe his is just like a breath
- 19:18and that's what his name is. So I, I don't know how to refer
- 19:22to God after thinking about this, but it would make most
- 19:28sense to say like the the breath like like that's it sounds like
- 19:34a breeze. So OK, going back to the
- 19:39beginning of Psalm 16, it says keep me safe, my God.
- 19:43Now this is interesting because it is ale El is the word in
- 19:50Hebrew singular form of God. Very interesting.
- 19:55So David speaking, I believe to the Father singularly in this
- 20:02one. Keep me safe, my God, for in you
- 20:06I take refuge. Then it says I say to and then
- 20:10he goes by name. You are.
- 20:15That's interesting because I don't know if I looked at verse
- 20:182 because does he repeat it twice like you?
- 20:22I need to look this up because I think I skipped over it when I
- 20:26was researching. On my phone to start.
- 20:30So Psalm 16 verse 2 is what I want to look up and I'm going to
- 20:37blueletterbible.com because I love how it shows you what the
- 20:42Hebrew word is. So it's if you want to say
- 20:46Yehovah or Yahweh or the breath that we were talking about is
- 20:54the first, the first reference I said to the Lord and oh, OK,
- 21:00this is different. OK, So the second part is
- 21:03Adonai. Adonai, which does essentially
- 21:07mean Lord, like the Lord of your life.
- 21:11So first he says, I say to you the personalized name to God,
- 21:16you are my Lord. So it's there's just so much
- 21:21more depth when we look at the Hebrew translation.
- 21:25So to start, it says keep me safe.
- 21:29My my God, which is ale singular, singular person for in
- 21:35you I take refuge, I say to and then the name of the Lord is
- 21:40used and then you are my Lord Adonai, which means Lord.
- 21:47And then later he goes back to using God's name when he says I
- 21:51will praise the name of God who counsels me even at night, my
- 21:57heart instructs me, I will keep my eyes always on.
- 22:01He uses the proper name of the Lord with him at my right hand,
- 22:05I will not be shaken. So this is a very surprised
- 22:09message to God, who is Lord over David's life and David takes
- 22:17refuge in him and he is talking about others who chase after
- 22:24other gods and saying I'm not going to do that.
- 22:26You are it for me. This is what he's saying to God.
- 22:29And he's he knows about his inheritance somehow.
- 22:35Like perhaps God reveals that to him in the night.
- 22:37We don't get everything. And maybe we'll see that in
- 22:41future Psalms that we read, because I haven't read these
- 22:44Psalms in a very slow manner looking up things until now.
- 22:48So you learn a lot more when you go slowly with Scripture.
- 22:53And he is just rejoicing and he's, he's secure and he knows
- 22:59that God will not abandon him. And he knows that God is
- 23:02faithful and he feels the joy in his presence and know that he
- 23:07has eternal pleasures. I mean, this is just like a
- 23:11wonderful thing, a wonderful Psalm of, of praise and just
- 23:16thankfulness to God that David is expressing.
- 23:21And so that really concludes this Psalm 16.
- 23:26So if this was beneficial to you, please share this with
- 23:29other people. And if you want to stay in the
- 23:32word, please subscribe because I try to do this.
- 23:35My goal is to record something every day because I, I would
- 23:39need to be in the word every day.
- 23:41Just like I, I mentioned that podcast earlier was talking
- 23:45about abiding in Christ. And I think it my podcast where
- 23:49I talked about in him in Christ and all of that was turned out
- 23:52to be like 2 hours long, which I couldn't believe I actually
- 23:55talked for that long. So anyway, this one's much
- 23:59shorter and I hope you come back again and I hope you stay in the
- 24:05word, even if you're not here on this podcast, but that you just
- 24:09personally stay in the word and God speaks to you through
- 24:12scripture. I ask that in Jesus name, Amen.
