- 5:23SPEAKER_00: Think about how you're going to make your employees feel safe, supported, and given permission to take responsibility and ownership of the goals that you've set them.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: If any of these three factors is missing, employees will not want to be empowered and will not want to take the risks and a responsibility for owning their work.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Empower employees through the frameworks that you create and your decisions, actions and behaviours.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: Here are six steps or actions to help empower your employees to take the initiative and make decisions to enable them to produce great results.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Firstly, communicate and create understanding of the goals that the team is trying to reach.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: Secondly, define what type and level of decisions will be made by whom.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: Third, share information openly so everyone can do a great job.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: Fourth, delegate problems, not tasks where you sensibly can.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Fifth, start small and progress to bigger in terms of what you delegate, the problems, etc.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: And then sixth, resist taking away their responsibility or decisions.

- 7:01SPEAKER_00: One of the key ways to get good employees to stay is to invest your time and effort into developing their skills and experience.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: I personally think this is a vital role of any manager, and one of the key ways that you can offer a fair exchange for great work from your team.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: Understand each team member's preferences, interests, strengths and ambitions, and try hard to match the work you have available to best suit these.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: Do this with every team member.

- 7:45SPEAKER_00: Another very important factor is higher skilled teams usually produce better results.

- 8:12SPEAKER_00: Firstly, create very clear goals and keep communicating these to provide clear direction, permission and psychological safety.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: Secondly, align your decisions, actions and behaviours to the goals and standards that you have set for your team.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: Third, provide a lot of feedback to team members and give a lot of praise for good decisions, actions, behaviours and results.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: Fourth, work hard to remove problems that are impacting the team.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: And fifth, protect the team from too many changes of direction, low value requests, politics and organisational conflict.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: Sixth, work hard to develop all your team members.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: And seventh, spend a lot of time with your team members and promote teamworking in all the ways that you can.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: The more positive the team environment, the more likely all employees will want to stay longer.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: Working in a nice environment with good colleagues that help and support each other is a very big incentive to stay for most people.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: So in summary, keeping hold of your best staff for as long as possible is a great way to keep improving your team's performance.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: Increasing team performance is another good reason or a good incentive for employees to stay.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: Success attracts people all by itself.
