- 0:01Speaker 1: I'll get a teen Welcome to another in Storm with
- 0:03Speaker 1: You project. I don't know why I fucked up the
- 0:06Speaker 1: intro that I did thirteen seconds ago, having done this
- 0:10Speaker 1: seventy two million times, but I managed to do it,
- 0:14Speaker 1: so then I rebooted, and I'm not sure that this
- 0:16Speaker 1: one is any better than the fucking first one. Anyway,
- 0:19Speaker 1: this is the one you're getting, Hi, tiv, I.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Love this one. I'm having a great time.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Good morning. I'm drinking a cup of tea. It's very muggy.
- 0:30Speaker 1: It's very muggy, twenty two or three degrees in the
- 0:33Speaker 1: thriving And now I sound like I'm Jane Bunn. Jane
- 0:37Speaker 1: Bunn is a weather presenter and meteorologist. I think more respectfully,
- 0:41Speaker 1: more than just a lady who presents the weather. So
- 0:44Speaker 1: I've got a little bit. I'm channeling Jane Bunn at
- 0:46Speaker 1: the moment. But it is eleven thirty five in Melbourne
- 0:48Speaker 1: Sunday morning. What are you laughing at? Is there a
- 0:53Speaker 1: double on tundra to that that I'm not. I didn't
- 0:55Speaker 1: mean anything. I'm just saying and it's fucking muggy outside.
- 1:00Speaker 1: It's muggy, really hot, but not Yeah, yesterday was ridiculous,
- 1:06Speaker 1: did I tell you. I don't know if I told
- 1:08Speaker 1: you this. We're going to talk about turning an idea
- 1:10Speaker 1: into a reality today. That's the theme of our show.
- 1:14Speaker 1: But speaking of that, I realized that I have been
- 1:21Speaker 1: walking less lately, but just because I've been busy, so
- 1:24Speaker 1: I've been unintentionally sitting at my computer more. And I
- 1:29Speaker 1: looked up and I generally I'm a kind of a
- 1:32Speaker 1: seven to ten thousand steps a day, which is not
- 1:34Speaker 1: a lot. But I looked at my last week or
- 1:38Speaker 1: so on my phone. Admittedly my phone doesn't go everywhere
- 1:41Speaker 1: but most places with me, and one day I did
- 1:45Speaker 1: like three and a half thousand steps or something. I'm like, what,
- 1:49Speaker 1: am I a fucking plant? Am I a yaka? Am
- 1:51Speaker 1: I a daffodil? And so I said to myself self,
- 1:57Speaker 1: this the next seven days rock bottom, ten thousand, rock bottom.
- 2:01Speaker 1: You've got to do more. But so I've been doing
- 2:05Speaker 1: every day. I think I told you this, But for
- 2:07Speaker 1: the listeners, I've been doing every day, you know, at
- 2:09Speaker 1: least ten most days around twelve or thirteen. Yesterday I
- 2:12Speaker 1: did nearly sixteen. And it's funny, like just walking, which
- 2:19Speaker 1: is hardly you know, strenuous. I guess, depending on where
- 2:24Speaker 1: you're at, some people might be harder than others, of course,
- 2:27Speaker 1: But so funny, like the last I've kind of pretty
- 2:30Speaker 1: much doubled my walking over the last six days. And
- 2:35Speaker 1: I'm hungrier. And you know how I'm I'm famously I
- 2:38Speaker 1: only eat breakfast and lunch. I mean two o'clock, I
- 2:43Speaker 1: could eat a chocolate coated turd. I'm so fucking hungry.
- 2:47Speaker 1: I'm like, oh my god, this is who invented walking.
- 2:53Speaker 1: This is a big energy burner.
- 2:56Speaker 2: So that's disgusting, isn't it? Chocolate? And you put that
- 3:00Speaker 2: in my head now.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Yeah, next time you pick up some chocolate, especially if
- 3:04Speaker 1: you go and by yourself a chaquto or a mars bar,
- 3:07Speaker 1: you'll have that little visual You're welcome. So I've been
- 3:11Speaker 1: breaking my own rule. I have been eating lunch, but
- 3:13Speaker 1: I've been having a handful of nuts or a little
- 3:17Speaker 1: kind of protein drinking poo. But anyway, but it's but
- 3:22Speaker 1: apart from that another unexpected benefit. I didn't expect any
- 3:27Speaker 1: benefit other than just moving my body a bit more.
- 3:29Speaker 1: And you know, just the benefits come of the physiological benefits.
- 3:34Speaker 1: But I feel better, like it's hard to, you know,
- 3:39Speaker 1: because when you're rating yourself, you've only got you to
- 3:42Speaker 1: rate you against you, you know. So it's but as
- 3:45Speaker 1: objective as I can be, which is not very because
- 3:48Speaker 1: I am me assessing me. But I feel a bit
- 3:52Speaker 1: happier and I feel a bit cognitively sharper. So when
- 3:58Speaker 1: I do sit down, like what I've found myself doing
- 4:02Speaker 1: the last most of the last week is I'll do
- 4:07Speaker 1: one longish walk like five k's, but then I'll get
- 4:11Speaker 1: up from my desk and go and walk a k,
- 4:14Speaker 1: come back, do some shit, go walk another k. People
- 4:18Speaker 1: in my area must think I'm a fucking weirdo because
- 4:22Speaker 1: they just see this mystery. Yeah, who's that old fucker
- 4:26Speaker 1: just walking laps in front of my house five times
- 4:30Speaker 1: a day? So I need to consciously choose a different
- 4:34Speaker 1: route so I don't I don't scare people. And I
- 4:39Speaker 1: the other day I walked, so I just wanted to.
- 4:43Speaker 1: I had literally ten minutes before a meeting or twelve minutes,
- 4:46Speaker 1: and I went right, I'm going to do a ten
- 4:47Speaker 1: minute walk just to get in a thousand steps. So
- 4:50Speaker 1: I walked out the side, walked out the side of
- 4:53Speaker 1: my house, I walked up the side street because I
- 4:57Speaker 1: live on a corner. I walked, you know, like five
- 4:59Speaker 1: hundred meters one way, and then this lady came out
- 5:01Speaker 1: of a driveway just as I walked past where I
- 5:03Speaker 1: was about to turn around and just come back. So
- 5:06Speaker 1: I just walk one direction, turn around, come back. That's
- 5:08Speaker 1: what I was doing this time. And then so then
- 5:11Speaker 1: I literally turned around and it looked like I was
- 5:14Speaker 1: following her, so I had to walk over the other
- 5:19Speaker 1: side of the street because I was walking one direction.
- 5:22Speaker 1: She came out started walking down the street, and then
- 5:25Speaker 1: I essentially turned around and followed her, but not really,
- 5:29Speaker 1: but that's what it would have felt like for her.
- 5:32Speaker 1: And I'm like, ah, so, you know, like.
- 5:36Speaker 2: That's one of the and I understand it. I understand
- 5:39Speaker 2: palf of women. Thanks for thanks for crossing the street.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Oh no, I have a lot of awareness around that,
- 5:44Speaker 1: and I often get conflicted because like the other day,
- 5:48Speaker 1: I was coming back, I did a big walk and
- 5:49Speaker 1: I was walking down Hampton Street and there were these
- 5:53Speaker 1: two little girls out in the front of a restaurant.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Their parents must have been in the restaurant. I guess
- 5:57Speaker 1: one was on a scooter, one was on a bike,
- 6:00Speaker 1: and the one that was on the bike was trying
- 6:02Speaker 1: to ride it, but the side stand was clunked down
- 6:06Speaker 1: in position so she couldn't ride it, and she was
- 6:12Speaker 1: trying to get the side stand of the bike up,
- 6:14Speaker 1: but she didn't wanted to turn your microphone off? What
- 6:16Speaker 1: are you doing?
- 6:17Speaker 2: My dog's barking quite something.
- 6:20Speaker 1: So anyway, I thought maybe you were farting. But that's okay,
- 6:23Speaker 1: dog fart either. Good. It's funny because sometimes when you're
- 6:26Speaker 1: chatting folks, tiff turns a microphone off like it is
- 6:29Speaker 1: right now, and you feel like, you know, when you
- 6:32Speaker 1: feel like you're talking to someone but they're not looking
- 6:34Speaker 1: at you. That's what I just stopped mid conversations sometimes. Sorry,
- 6:40Speaker 1: so sorry for talking while you're interrupting. Sorry, But anyway,
- 6:45Speaker 1: so the little girl couldn't get the side stand of
- 6:48Speaker 1: her bike up, but obviously I knew that I could.
- 6:52Speaker 1: And then I'm in this dilemma. Do I stop and
- 6:54Speaker 1: help the five year old that I don't know and
- 6:57Speaker 1: be helpful like my intention genuinely to help her so
- 7:01Speaker 1: she could ride a bike. But then these days you're like, fuck,
- 7:05Speaker 1: what does that look like? I'm actually scared to just
- 7:08Speaker 1: do a nice thing. You know, and so anyway, it
- 7:12Speaker 1: was in the middle of it. There was people everywhere,
- 7:14Speaker 1: and so I just I said, do you want a hand?
- 7:16Speaker 1: And she kind of smiled and nodded, and I just
- 7:18Speaker 1: clunked it up and took off and she's like thank you.
- 7:21Speaker 1: I'm like, you're welcome. But as quickly as I could
- 7:24Speaker 1: do it and then get out of there, I did it.
- 7:26Speaker 1: And I was walking away and I felt a little
- 7:28Speaker 1: bit sad that you can't if you're it, and I
- 7:32Speaker 1: understand it, I get it, but if you're if you
- 7:36Speaker 1: are the bloke who's just trying to help someone, and
- 7:40Speaker 1: then you feel awkward or guilty or like worried. Here
- 7:44Speaker 1: I am doing a good thing. Do I need to worry?
- 7:47Speaker 1: Do I need to worry that I'm doing a good thing?
- 7:48Speaker 1: About what this good thing looks like? Not what's actually
- 7:52Speaker 1: going on, but what people think. So yeah, that's that's
- 7:57Speaker 1: something that now for me is it's not an issue,
- 8:01Speaker 1: but it's an awareness that I didn't used to have,
- 8:04Speaker 1: like I just do a nice thing, like if it
- 8:07Speaker 1: was you know, it's like I saw a bloke the
- 8:10Speaker 1: other day or not the other day a few weeks
- 8:13Speaker 1: ago who was struggling to get some shit in the
- 8:16Speaker 1: back of his station wagon, and I just stopped and
- 8:20Speaker 1: helped him. Like he was just by himself with this
- 8:23Speaker 1: big box of shit. But with that guy, I'm like,
- 8:25Speaker 1: no worries, it's a dude. I'm a dude. He's a dude.
- 8:29Speaker 1: We're just putting shit in the back of a station wagon,
- 8:32Speaker 1: you know. But if that was a lady, I would
- 8:34Speaker 1: have had to go, oh, like, I want to help,
- 8:37Speaker 1: But what does that come across?
- 8:38Speaker 2: Like he'd probably just knocked off a jewelry store, and
- 8:41Speaker 2: you've just become an accomplice it helping him get rid
- 8:44Speaker 2: of the goods.
- 8:45Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, why are we loading all of these
- 8:47Speaker 1: computers and this jewelry? And what about this big plasma screen?
- 8:53Speaker 1: And why are you wearing a balaclava? Brian? Are you
- 8:57Speaker 1: sure your name's Brian? Yeah, well, now that you mention it,
- 9:01Speaker 1: I'll hang on. I think that's the cops all right anyway,
- 9:08Speaker 1: So no one needs to know that. But that's just
- 9:10Speaker 1: what goes through my head. But yes, I'm walking more.
- 9:14Speaker 1: I'm out helping people in suburbia doing God's work, you
- 9:19Speaker 1: know today Robinhood, I can just doing what I can
- 9:23Speaker 1: And then overthinking my actions as is my way, as
- 9:28Speaker 1: is my way.
- 9:29Speaker 2: It is interesting though, like it's great that because I
- 9:32Speaker 2: was going to say, do you feel better from being
- 9:35Speaker 2: active and walking?
- 9:36Speaker 1: And yeah, well I normally walk, but I realized I
- 9:41Speaker 1: don't walk as much as I think, Like I consciously
- 9:45Speaker 1: go for a walk every day, but when I'm not
- 9:48Speaker 1: actually going, you know, when I go to the gym,
- 9:50Speaker 1: I driver. I don't drive a ride a motorbike, and
- 9:53Speaker 1: so I don't. I don't incidentally walk much because I
- 9:58Speaker 1: spend so much time doing what I do, so incidental
- 10:02Speaker 1: walking is probably two thousand steps a day. Yeah, you know.
- 10:07Speaker 1: So then even to get to eight thousand, I've got
- 10:09Speaker 1: to actually go for a walk, which is cool. But
- 10:13Speaker 1: then when I've pretty much doubled it, some days tripled it,
- 10:17Speaker 1: like yesterday was a lot. Yeah, I really I feel hungrier.
- 10:23Speaker 1: I feel I feel Yeah, I feel better. I know
- 10:28Speaker 1: that's a weird. But there is a big correlation between
- 10:30Speaker 1: longevity and you know what there's if anyone wants to know.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Of course, there's a correlation between longevity and hell span,
- 10:36Speaker 1: in other words, how long you live, but how well
- 10:39Speaker 1: you live for those years. But another interesting variable and
- 10:42Speaker 1: We've spoken about grip strength and quite a few other things,
- 10:45Speaker 1: but is stride length and walking speed. So the bigger
- 10:52Speaker 1: that you step or the bigger you stride length. Now,
- 10:54Speaker 1: remember that's in relation to your height. So we don't
- 10:58Speaker 1: expect someone who's six' five to have the same stride
- 11:00Speaker 1: length as someone LIKE tif who's four. Eight what are
- 11:06Speaker 1: you five to?
- 11:06Speaker 2: Five? Are?
- 11:10Speaker 1: Okay, now you're not six. Short you're kind of, normal
- 11:13Speaker 1: regular average, average so walking. Speed and so What i've
- 11:20Speaker 1: been doing IS i try to do one of my.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Walks most of my Walks i'm just listening to shit
- 11:25Speaker 1: or making phone calls or or you, know seeking The
- 11:30Speaker 1: lord m or you, know divine direction or people like
- 11:38Speaker 1: he bullshitting or is that? Real Or i'm consciously going
- 11:43Speaker 1: right this Walk i'm going to walk AT i put
- 11:45Speaker 1: up a thing the other day, too like called the
- 11:48Speaker 1: one point five. Protocol did you read? That? No probably.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Didn't so here's an interesting. Thing, now whatever you're walking,
- 12:00Speaker 1: speed if you one point five that in other, words
- 12:03Speaker 1: if you walk fifty percent, quicker you increase your energy
- 12:07Speaker 1: expenditure walking for the same amount of time by nearly
- 12:11Speaker 1: seventy five, percent which is really interesting because it's not
- 12:16Speaker 1: a linear kind of it doesn't parallel like the quicker
- 12:19Speaker 1: that you. Walk, obviously the more strength, required the more energy.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Required but and so you can do the same thing
- 12:26Speaker 1: for the same amount of. Time obviously you're going to
- 12:30Speaker 1: cover more, time more ground if you're walking. Quicker but,
- 12:33Speaker 1: YEAH i like. That SO i do one walk Where
- 12:36Speaker 1: i'm walking at my guestimate is about one point three
- 12:39Speaker 1: or one point five of my normal walking. Speed so
- 12:42Speaker 1: let's SAY i walk at five When i'm just strolling around.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Suburbia it's probably somewhere in the vicinity of. Seven BUT
- 12:49Speaker 1: i get back And i'm almost out of breath because
- 12:52Speaker 1: you're kind of, walking almost at that point where you
- 12:54Speaker 1: need to break into a. Jog and did you know.
- 12:58Speaker 1: This While i'm just boring everyone with fucking the science of,
- 13:01Speaker 1: walking everyone's just.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Fascinating getting up and walking around their.
- 13:04Speaker 1: House now, yeah, Yeah, no everyone's punching himself in the
- 13:06Speaker 1: face and hitting that fifteen second fast forward thing if
- 13:10Speaker 1: not turning. Off but here's something else that's. Interesting when
- 13:14Speaker 1: you let's say the fastest you can walk is say
- 13:18Speaker 1: seven point five right case, kph and after that you've
- 13:23Speaker 1: got to. Run, well it actually it takes more energy
- 13:27Speaker 1: to walk at seven point five than run at. Eight,
- 13:30Speaker 1: wow because it's less efficient biomechanically and. Energetically. Yeah so
- 13:37Speaker 1: it's funny because with, that in that particular unique, instance
- 13:42Speaker 1: walking at seven point five kilometers an, hour where this
- 13:46Speaker 1: is as fast as you can humanly, walk and now
- 13:50Speaker 1: then you break into a jog where you feel like
- 13:53Speaker 1: a slow jog is actually easier than a very fast.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Walk what about incline? Walking i've BEEN i did incline
- 14:02Speaker 2: walking on the treaty this. MORNING i always bang that
- 14:05Speaker 2: up on a high incline and that is.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Hard that's, well that IS i, mean here's the beauty
- 14:10Speaker 1: of all of these, things right when we think about
- 14:14Speaker 1: how do we improve, anything like how do we create
- 14:18Speaker 1: how do we push our fitness or our strength or
- 14:20Speaker 1: flexibility or any of the fitness. Measures, yeah if you
- 14:24Speaker 1: do the same thing at the same, speed that, is
- 14:26Speaker 1: if you walk for at five kph for thirty minutes
- 14:31Speaker 1: on the flat versus an incline of, five that's a very.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Different it seems pretty, similar but it's much. Different if
- 14:37Speaker 1: you walk on an incline of, ten that's that's you,
- 14:41Speaker 1: know and obviously you're also putting different muscles under, loads
- 14:44Speaker 1: you'll feel the muscle down the front of your, shin
- 14:47Speaker 1: which is called tibialis anterior that's in constant flexion because
- 14:52Speaker 1: your foot is bent, up so it's in dorsy. Flexion
- 14:57Speaker 1: so when you point your toe like a, ballerina that's
- 14:59Speaker 1: called plan. Inflection i'm not telling you this, Tip i'm
- 15:02Speaker 1: telling the. Audience and then when you bend your toe
- 15:06Speaker 1: or your foot back up towards like your, knee it's
- 15:10Speaker 1: called dorsy. Flexion and when you are walking on an,
- 15:12Speaker 1: incline you're in that dorsy flexed, position which means your
- 15:17Speaker 1: tibi ali, santeriria that muscle at the front of your
- 15:19Speaker 1: shin is contracted a lot more and so we get
- 15:23Speaker 1: really saw through. There but the bottom line is that
- 15:27Speaker 1: changing the variable like doing the exact same thing or
- 15:30Speaker 1: the exact same activity in a different. Way i'm, Walking
- 15:34Speaker 1: i'm walking, Flat i'm walking. Incline i'm walking, Slow i'm walking.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Fast i'm walking up a big. Hill i'm walking down
- 15:40Speaker 1: a big. Hill i'm walking on. Stairs i'm walking upstairs.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Downstairs i'm walking on soft. Sand that's a. Motherfucker i'm
- 15:46Speaker 1: walking in the dandy knongs like you do when you're
- 15:49Speaker 1: bloody making friends with the. Kidners i'm walking in the
- 15:52Speaker 1: dandy knongs and it's an uneven surface and as it's you,
- 15:57Speaker 1: know like you walking in the d's at five kilometers an.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Hour the Danniek noongs are some mountain ranges here In. Victoria,
- 16:04Speaker 1: everyone you walking at five kph in that environment versus
- 16:11Speaker 1: along the foreshore At Port melbourne on a flat. Path
- 16:15Speaker 1: your energy EXPENDITURE i don't know, exactly of, course because
- 16:19Speaker 1: they're too many, variables BUT i would guess your energy
- 16:21Speaker 1: expenditure would be around thirty to fifty percent more doing
- 16:25Speaker 1: the same activity in a different environment or the same
- 16:29Speaker 1: amount of. Time and all of these things are like
- 16:35Speaker 1: really nice examples of you, know progression and. Overload where
- 16:39Speaker 1: we're just and that's the thing is we. Are we've
- 16:41Speaker 1: spoken about this, before and we did not we did
- 16:44Speaker 1: not plan to talk about. This we'll talk about our
- 16:47Speaker 1: topic in a. Minute but you know the truth is
- 16:50Speaker 1: that when it comes to, exercise we are more emotional
- 16:53Speaker 1: than we are strategic in that we tend to do
- 16:56Speaker 1: the thing that we. LIKE i like this bench, press
- 17:01Speaker 1: So i'll use this bench OR i like this treadmill
- 17:04Speaker 1: in the, corner despite the fact that there are five identical,
- 17:07Speaker 1: ONES i always use this one OR i you, KNOW
- 17:11Speaker 1: i love to do, this BUT i don't love to
- 17:13Speaker 1: DO i enjoy the, bike BUT i hate the, rower
- 17:15Speaker 1: SO i do the. Bike it's, like, WELL i get,
- 17:19Speaker 1: that And i'm not saying don't do the, bike But i'm,
- 17:21Speaker 1: saying maybe the roller would be good because your body's
- 17:25Speaker 1: not conditioned to the rower because you avoid. It so
- 17:28Speaker 1: maybe there's some physiological benefit in doing the thing you
- 17:30Speaker 1: don't normally. Do maybe you create an adaptive response because
- 17:35Speaker 1: one of the things that you want is you want
- 17:37Speaker 1: to change your. Body but you always sit on the
- 17:39Speaker 1: bike and you do the same bike in the same
- 17:42Speaker 1: at the same speed for the same amount of, time
- 17:44Speaker 1: and then get frustrated because nothing's. Changed you, know, well
- 17:47Speaker 1: nothing changes because there's no physiological need because you never
- 17:51Speaker 1: create a new kind of. Stimulus you're just in an
- 17:53Speaker 1: exercise groundhog. Day so, YEAH i don't know how we got,
- 17:58Speaker 1: here but that all started with me. Walking more.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Started from your morning. Walk WHEN i in the fight,
- 18:06Speaker 2: camps WHEN i get really, fit AND i would we
- 18:10Speaker 2: warm up with really hard skipping sprints AND i can
- 18:13Speaker 2: skip as hard AS i can and kind of not
- 18:17Speaker 2: hit the red zone on my heart rate, monitor and
- 18:20Speaker 2: when it gets to that, POINT i would skip moderately
- 18:24Speaker 2: but run backwards and forwards at the same. Time so
- 18:27Speaker 2: just and, moderate like not fast at. All my heart
- 18:31Speaker 2: rate would go through the roof because you've got all
- 18:35Speaker 2: this new stuff going through your brain trying to figure
- 18:37Speaker 2: out the coordination Of oh Now i'm not just pushing this.
- 18:41Speaker 2: THING i know how to do as hard AS i.
- 18:42Speaker 2: Can i'm going forwards and then backwards and doing that
- 18:46Speaker 2: at the same. Time it's really.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Fascinating, yeah he's chucking in another. Variable. Yeah, Yeah it's
- 18:52Speaker 1: Like i've got two weight vests at my, place and
- 18:58Speaker 1: one of them holds what does it? Hold one of them.
- 19:02Speaker 1: Holds this is in, pounds, right a.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Dinosaur all, Right.
- 19:09Speaker 1: I'll do it in Ko, No i'll do it in.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Kilos so one of them holds about twenty, kilos twenty five,
- 19:15Speaker 1: kilos but the other, One tiffany And, cook holds seventy. Kilos. What,
- 19:22Speaker 1: yeah so that's one hundred. Me, yeah that's one hundred
- 19:25Speaker 1: and fifty four. Pounds and So i've only put on
- 19:29Speaker 1: the seventy kilos about three. Times and so my block
- 19:33Speaker 1: WHERE i, live IF i walk out and just turn left, left, left,
- 19:36Speaker 1: left and end up back at my joint and walking with,
- 19:40Speaker 1: that it's what it's seventy. Kilos so it's like piggybacking
- 19:44Speaker 1: you and you're piggybacking at ten and you've got a
- 19:48Speaker 1: ten kilo backpack. On. Right, wow that is AND i
- 19:54Speaker 1: mean literally it's a nine hundred meters. Walk, yeah it
- 19:57Speaker 1: is fucking. Agony it's like the first TIME i did.
- 20:03Speaker 1: It and one of the other realities of this particular
- 20:08Speaker 1: thing is getting this seventy kilo pack on and off
- 20:13Speaker 1: is harder than the actual. Walking so what you've got
- 20:17Speaker 1: to do is you. Lay so there's thirty five kilos,
- 20:21Speaker 1: front thirty five kilos, Pack so you lay the the
- 20:25Speaker 1: the vest on the bench and you Lay it's hard to,
- 20:32Speaker 1: explain but you need to lay it out length wise
- 20:34Speaker 1: on the, bench so the back is higher up on
- 20:37Speaker 1: the bench and the front is lower, down and you
- 20:40Speaker 1: literally lay on the weights the front part of the.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Vest you put your head through the. Vest then you
- 20:46Speaker 1: need to try and get the weights over your back
- 20:48Speaker 1: while Doing it's MAYBE i was going to Say i'll
- 20:51Speaker 1: do a. VIDEO i definitely. Won't no one needs to see.
- 20:53Speaker 1: It but oh it's a it's a, motherfucker but, yeah
- 20:57Speaker 1: It's but even nothing ridiculous like. That but even getting
- 21:01Speaker 1: a weight vest where you put on ten, kilos so
- 21:05Speaker 1: instead of Being tiff who weighs, sixty now You're tiff
- 21:07Speaker 1: who weighs, seventy and you go for your normal walk
- 21:10Speaker 1: and you try and do your normal walk at your
- 21:12Speaker 1: normal pace with your dog and do all the things
- 21:15Speaker 1: you normally. Do so it's a it's not a crazy,
- 21:18Speaker 1: wait but, yeah even just, That let's, see what's ten
- 21:21Speaker 1: kilos as a percentage of sixty is it's around fifteen sixteen,
- 21:26Speaker 1: Percent so that's about sixteen percent of your body weight ten,
- 21:30Speaker 1: Kilos so that's a sixteen percent. INCREASE i wouldn't mind,
- 21:33Speaker 1: That AND i would think the energy expenditure would Be
- 21:38Speaker 1: i'm making this, up but it would be definitely somewhere
- 21:42Speaker 1: in the thirty to, fifty maybe twenty to, thirty maybe
- 21:45Speaker 1: twenty to. Thirty and that's doing in. It and that's not.
- 21:48Speaker 1: HARD i mean it's, hard but you, know so even
- 21:52Speaker 1: just and this is the whole idea of. Progression if
- 21:54Speaker 1: you don't want to run or you don't want to
- 21:56Speaker 1: and that's. Cool but you know the other THING i
- 22:00Speaker 1: saw yesterday or not, yesterday the other. Day just quickly
- 22:03Speaker 1: before we keep avoiding the, topic we're talking about how
- 22:07Speaker 1: long have we been? Talking by the, way actually, minutes
- 22:11Speaker 1: well have we it's the world's longest. Intro so this
- 22:16Speaker 1: lady was on what was she? On what was she?
- 22:19Speaker 1: On she was On huberman and she was. Talking she's
- 22:23Speaker 1: an excise, scientist this lady and research of. PhD straight
- 22:27Speaker 1: up smarty. Pants, PROBABLY i don't, KNOW i might be
- 22:30Speaker 1: being rude WHEN i say she LOOKS i think she's
- 22:32Speaker 1: around my, age SO i would guess anywhere kind of
- 22:36Speaker 1: fifty five. Plus it could be, wrong but, anyway she
- 22:41Speaker 1: was talking about what there her three things that people
- 22:47Speaker 1: should do who are, older absolute non. Negotiables so one
- 22:53Speaker 1: obviously is heavy strength. Training and by heavy we mean
- 23:00Speaker 1: relative to the, individual of, course so some people five kilos,
- 23:04Speaker 1: heavy for some people twenty kilos is. Light so we're
- 23:06Speaker 1: talking about relative to the individual with good form who's
- 23:09Speaker 1: already built up a. Base but eventually when that person
- 23:12Speaker 1: gets to just so to be doing some strength training
- 23:15Speaker 1: that's hard and. Progressive that was one you're never going to,
- 23:19Speaker 1: next guess the next, two the. Next the second, one
- 23:24Speaker 1: not in order of, importance is. Sprinting did you know
- 23:28Speaker 1: that ninety five percent of people once they reach thirty
- 23:32Speaker 1: never sprint. Again they, MIGHT i don't, know semi sprint
- 23:38Speaker 1: for the odd, taxi but in terms of actually, going
- 23:41Speaker 1: can like do some kind of training where they're running
- 23:45Speaker 1: at almost So, obviously again there are lots of variables around,
- 23:49Speaker 1: that and this is not a, recommendation and you've got
- 23:51Speaker 1: to stretch and you've got to build up all that. Shit,
- 23:53Speaker 1: Right but let's say in a perfect world that we
- 23:56Speaker 1: don't live, in but so strength training. Sprinting the other
- 24:00Speaker 1: one is, bouncing so where both of your feet are
- 24:04Speaker 1: off the, ground not bouncing on a, bouncer, bouncing so
- 24:09Speaker 1: you are literally pushing your weight off the, earth so
- 24:14Speaker 1: you and your feet are leaving the earth. Momentarily and
- 24:19Speaker 1: THEN i had a look at a protocol it's like one,
- 24:22Speaker 1: minute one, minute AND i did one, minute And i'm, like,
- 24:27Speaker 1: yeah that that. WORKS i did one minute just on
- 24:32Speaker 1: outside my, joint on fake. Grass But i'm, like, YEAH i.
- 24:36Speaker 1: Could it was all. Right it wasn't. Horrendous But i'm,
- 24:39Speaker 1: like IF i did two minutes of, THAT i THINK
- 24:41Speaker 1: i would be. Fucked but, yeah you, know it's, funny
- 24:45Speaker 1: so these little protocols because you think about when you have,
- 24:48Speaker 1: impact like not, reckless dangerous, impact but a degree of.
- 24:55Speaker 1: Impact where you're, now you're working against your strength and
- 24:59Speaker 1: your spine and your bone, mass and your strength is
- 25:03Speaker 1: working against gravity to help you momentarily leave The. Earth
- 25:07Speaker 1: so to. Speak by The, EARTH i mean terra, firma
- 25:10Speaker 1: not the orbit of The, earth just the fucking just
- 25:13Speaker 1: the bit below your. Feet imagine THAT i jumped, UP
- 25:17Speaker 1: i landed on The. MOON i just wanted to do
- 25:21Speaker 1: one minutes of Plios, okay and HERE i am just
- 25:27Speaker 1: next to the space Station. Buck that's what it's like
- 25:32Speaker 1: being an only. Child tip you.
- 25:34Speaker 2: Should have another day in the. Hammock you're you're quite
- 25:37Speaker 2: on fire.
- 25:37Speaker 1: TODAY i Know i'm amusing at some, mark AREN'T i All?
- 25:41Speaker 1: Right so do you want to just keep banging on
- 25:44Speaker 1: about this mindless shit or should we do the actual
- 25:47Speaker 1: topic we were going to, do or should we do
- 25:49Speaker 1: that another? Day, Well i'm not.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Like it's entirely up to. You Perhaps i'm quite amused, either, WAY.
- 25:57Speaker 1: I think we might we might leave this idea for
- 26:00Speaker 1: another day BECAUSE i feel LIKE i feel like WE'RE
- 26:05Speaker 1: i think this would almost be enough for a little
- 26:07Speaker 1: a little. Episode BUT i, think LIKE i know that
- 26:11Speaker 1: we've spoken a lot over the years, periodically like we've
- 26:15Speaker 1: we've probably had out of the seventeen hundred and something the,
- 26:18Speaker 1: episodes we've probably had twenty episodes where we've covered similar.
- 26:22Speaker 1: Stuff BUT i just think it's good for us to think,
- 26:24Speaker 1: about you, know for those of us who, exercise or
- 26:29Speaker 1: even those of us who, don't if you want to
- 26:32Speaker 1: think about. EXERCISING i think one of the one of
- 26:35Speaker 1: the emotional and psychological hurdles for people is that you
- 26:38Speaker 1: need to become a gym, person or you need to
- 26:40Speaker 1: become a fitness, person or you need to become something
- 26:44Speaker 1: that you're. Not and you absolutely, don't you absolutely. Don't
- 26:49Speaker 1: but but WHAT i do, KNOW i don't know what
- 26:52Speaker 1: you the listener should individually. Do but WHAT i do
- 26:55Speaker 1: know is that body's done the right way, consistently his
- 27:00Speaker 1: benefit from from movement and from load and from variety
- 27:05Speaker 1: and from some progression and from working against resistance and you,
- 27:10Speaker 1: know being being kind of somewhat diligent with that even
- 27:16Speaker 1: when it ain't. Fun you, know every every one of
- 27:18Speaker 1: us has a, body and that body is going to
- 27:21Speaker 1: fucking fall. Apart, eventually the body is going to. Decline
- 27:25Speaker 1: you are going to lose bone density and strength and
- 27:27Speaker 1: muscle and function and balance and fucking bladder, control and
- 27:31Speaker 1: all of these things happen eventually that, like nobody misses, out,
- 27:36Speaker 1: nobody nobody comes out, alive. Everybody but it's, LIKE i,
- 27:41Speaker 1: THINK i just get what's the. WORD i get passionate
- 27:47Speaker 1: about this because, well you, Know i'm watching quite a
- 27:50Speaker 1: few people my parents' age and their friends and my
- 27:54Speaker 1: own parents and dealing with some you, know some confronting
- 28:00Speaker 1: things at the moment that don't need to be divulged.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Here but it's, like, yeah there's an. Inevitability AND i
- 28:08Speaker 1: also look at some people that are dealing with things right,
- 28:11Speaker 1: now and also some of the people That i've worked
- 28:15Speaker 1: with over the years or just observed over the, years
- 28:18Speaker 1: WHERE i can't say with absolute certainty BECAUSE i don't
- 28:22Speaker 1: have a crystal, ball BUT i say with a lot
- 28:25Speaker 1: of confidence that if this particular person or that particular
- 28:29Speaker 1: person had have done certain things over the last thirty,
- 28:32Speaker 1: years instead of each shit and sit on the. Couch
- 28:36Speaker 1: they would be in a very different place, now like
- 28:40Speaker 1: their body, would their, function their quality of, life their,
- 28:43Speaker 1: lifestyle their capacity would be nothing like it currently. Is you,
- 28:49Speaker 1: know AND i think that weaving whatever whether or not
- 28:54Speaker 1: it's just going for a walk five times a day
- 28:56Speaker 1: for a, k or whether or not it's doing some
- 28:58Speaker 1: step ups on the bench or the, backstep or whether
- 29:02Speaker 1: or not it's doing a prone, hold or whether or
- 29:04Speaker 1: not it is actually joining a. GYM i, mean it's
- 29:06Speaker 1: never been a better, time not in my lifetime. Anyway
- 29:10Speaker 1: like WHEN i grew, up costing a, gym costing joining
- 29:14Speaker 1: a gym was not, cheap LIKE i remember gyms THAT
- 29:18Speaker 1: i worked in forty years. Ago it was five hundred
- 29:22Speaker 1: to one thousand dollars a year to join a gym.
- 29:24Speaker 1: Then and you can join a gym now for about
- 29:27Speaker 1: five hundred. Bucks depends which gym and what, membership and
- 29:30Speaker 1: you know where you get, in and you know there's
- 29:34Speaker 1: all these offers going on, constantly and so for ten
- 29:36Speaker 1: bucks a, week even if you're not a gym, person doesn't.
- 29:40Speaker 1: Matter but all of a, sudden now for ten bucks a,
- 29:43Speaker 1: week you've got a million dollars worth of gym equipment
- 29:45Speaker 1: that you can use twenty four hours a day that
- 29:50Speaker 1: is just good for your. Body so how often.
- 29:55Speaker 2: You, Gone, oh it's, interesting like what our relationship with
- 30:02Speaker 2: the idea of exercise or training or the body or fitness.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Is AND i, reckon you, know because you talk to
- 30:10Speaker 2: most people who who have fitness as part of their,
- 30:13Speaker 2: life it's so frequent that you hear people, saying, WELL
- 30:16Speaker 2: i DO i MEAN i do that from my mental health,
- 30:18Speaker 2: though so they've made the correlation that WHAT i do
- 30:21Speaker 2: with my body is good for my mind and good
- 30:23Speaker 2: for my, emotions good for my. Energy, definitely it's interesting
- 30:28Speaker 2: to look at what starts it, off what our resistance,
- 30:31Speaker 2: is what our mindset, around the idea of it and
- 30:34Speaker 2: the story of it is the prevents us from getting,
- 30:37Speaker 2: started BECAUSE i think we can start from a really Laborious,
- 30:40Speaker 2: OH i don't like my, body and NOW i have
- 30:43Speaker 2: to do this and it's this shit thing THAT i don't.
- 30:45Speaker 2: Like it's in the way of. Process.
- 30:48Speaker 1: Yea and how many people start to exercise for their
- 30:52Speaker 1: body and then realize how great it is for their,
- 30:55Speaker 1: emotions for their, anxiety for their, depression for their mental, focus, memory, like, oh,
- 31:03Speaker 1: oh this Is it's almost like the body benefits are. Secondary,
- 31:07Speaker 1: yeah you, know the physiology is that's just a, bonus
- 31:10Speaker 1: but FUCK i feel. Good. Yeah, like there are very
- 31:14Speaker 1: few people who start to work out if they do,
- 31:16Speaker 1: it you, know the right. WAY i don't mean to
- 31:18Speaker 1: start off like seventy two workouts a, week but just
- 31:22Speaker 1: who don't talk about the fact that they feel, better
- 31:25Speaker 1: not just, physically but oh yeah WHEN i work, out
- 31:28Speaker 1: it so many people have said to, me WHEN i
- 31:30Speaker 1: exercize in the morning sets me up for the, DAY
- 31:32Speaker 1: i feel. Amazing IF i don't do, IT i feel,
- 31:34Speaker 1: shit you know, So but then they do this thing
- 31:37Speaker 1: and it creates all this great biochemical stuff in the.
- 31:40Speaker 1: Brain BUT i also think that like back to what you,
- 31:46Speaker 1: said which is something like the relationship we have with.
- 31:48Speaker 1: Exercise but it's almost like some people think about having
- 31:53Speaker 1: to exercise as some kind of fucking. PUNISHMENT i think
- 31:59Speaker 1: it's a. Gift like what about our Friend joel who
- 32:03Speaker 1: lives in a. Wheelchair what about our Friend johnny who's
- 32:07Speaker 1: got a spinal cord injury and a brain. Injury what
- 32:09Speaker 1: About it's, like if you can, exercise you're fucking. Gifted
- 32:15Speaker 1: like you're, blessed you. Know, Ah i'm like, wow you,
- 32:20Speaker 1: know LIKE i don't mean sound, judging and maybe that,
- 32:23Speaker 1: does SO i apologize if it. Does but for me
- 32:26Speaker 1: having worked with people who don't have the, option a
- 32:29Speaker 1: lot of them who can't go for a, walk who
- 32:32Speaker 1: can't get out of a, chair who can't lift a,
- 32:34Speaker 1: weight and then and then who would do anything to
- 32:39Speaker 1: be able to go for lift a, weight stand, up
- 32:41Speaker 1: sit in a, car get out of a, car you,
- 32:44Speaker 1: know get on a step ladder and get a cup
- 32:46Speaker 1: down from the cupboard. Whatever just that shit that we
- 32:49Speaker 1: take for. Granted and so often we just do dumb
- 32:54Speaker 1: shit to our body because we're, lazy or we're, disinterested
- 32:58Speaker 1: or we tell ourselves a. Story you. Know it's, like,
- 33:02Speaker 1: Ah i'm not an Exercise i'm not a Fitness and
- 33:04Speaker 1: then also WHAT i SHOULD i should shut up BECAUSE
- 33:08Speaker 1: i feel Like i'm going to disenfranchise, people but people
- 33:11Speaker 1: who run people down who. Exercise like the amount of
- 33:15Speaker 1: people over the years who have criticized me BECAUSE i
- 33:19Speaker 1: work out every. DAY i mean it's not fifty, percent
- 33:22Speaker 1: but it's more than you would. Think it's like you're
- 33:25Speaker 1: obsessed And i'm not. OBSESSED i just can't get another.
- 33:28Speaker 1: Body this is the only One i've. Got and so
- 33:30Speaker 1: WHEN i do this to my body for my, body
- 33:33Speaker 1: my body works, BETTER i work, better my life is.
- 33:35Speaker 1: Better but it's easier for them to criticize you than
- 33:40Speaker 1: to acknowledge perhaps what they should be doing or what
- 33:43Speaker 1: they're not. Doing so rather than, go, OH i could be,
- 33:46Speaker 1: inspired OR i could, learn OR i could whatever from.
- 33:50Speaker 1: Whoever it is not, Me i'm not an, inspiration but
- 33:53Speaker 1: or maybe you.
- 33:54Speaker 2: KNOW i could just acknowledge that someone's protocol is different to, mine.
- 33:58Speaker 1: Yes OR i don't even need to fucking comment on you.
- 34:02Speaker 1: Know it's like if people could sit on the couch
- 34:05Speaker 1: and eat shit and get good, OUTCOMES i would be
- 34:08Speaker 1: all for. It but nobody in the history of history
- 34:12Speaker 1: has ever eaten sat on the, couch eating, shit drinking,
- 34:16Speaker 1: booze doing fuck, all having bad, health our bad behavioral,
- 34:21Speaker 1: sorry bad exercise and food habits and lifestyle, habits and
- 34:25Speaker 1: produced a good. Outcome, nobody, Right so it's not like
- 34:31Speaker 1: this is an.
- 34:31Speaker 2: Opinion there's more options, though for people to get fit
- 34:36Speaker 2: and get, moving and they get boxed into which gym
- 34:40Speaker 2: and which type of training that AM i going? To
- 34:44Speaker 2: do to grapple my body into looking the WAY i
- 34:47Speaker 2: want it. To and it's like me driving now frequently
- 34:52Speaker 2: for an hour to get to The daninongs because the
- 34:55Speaker 2: experience WHEN i get, there it's hard to make that
- 34:59Speaker 2: drive Because i'm, like it's a lot of my. Day
- 35:02Speaker 2: that's a lot of my. Day and THEN i get
- 35:04Speaker 2: there And i'm, like this is so fucking worth. It
- 35:07Speaker 2: it is so. Beautiful and THEN i find these little
- 35:10Speaker 2: hills AND i go up and down and SOMETIMES i
- 35:12Speaker 2: have a little bit of a fast paced trot AND
- 35:15Speaker 2: i make friends within a kidnap And i'm, like this
- 35:18Speaker 2: is so different to the training THAT i have gotten
- 35:23Speaker 2: used to doing all this time That i'm. Recalibrating, yeah
- 35:28Speaker 2: and also this is for another, day another.
- 35:29Speaker 1: Chat BUT i, think you, know when you are doing
- 35:34Speaker 1: that all the stuff that we're talking, about or a
- 35:37Speaker 1: version of the stuff that we're talking about in, nature
- 35:39Speaker 1: that's another, layer that's another level because you're doing all
- 35:43Speaker 1: this great ship for your. Body but now you're doing
- 35:45Speaker 1: all this stuff that it's almost, transcendent you. Know it's
- 35:49Speaker 1: not like you, know getting in, nature it's like going
- 35:53Speaker 1: back to nature because we are nature like for most
- 35:56Speaker 1: of our evolutionary, timeline us and nature have been. Intertwined
- 36:01Speaker 1: it's only very very very recently in terms of the
- 36:05Speaker 1: evolutionary timeline that we've lived in concrete. Jungles but most
- 36:10Speaker 1: of our existence we had our feet in the dirt literally,
- 36:14Speaker 1: literally like shoes are fucking. New do you know WHAT i? Mean,
- 36:19Speaker 1: YEAH i mean in terms of what we have, today you?
- 36:22Speaker 2: Know, So, YEAH i got LIKE i up, there got
- 36:26Speaker 2: so overwhelmed with emotion and gratitude and a level of
- 36:31Speaker 2: presence THAT i JUST i just haven't experienced for no reason.
- 36:35Speaker 2: Before LIKE i wasn't In, INDIA i wasn't on a.
- 36:37Speaker 2: MOUNTAIN i was down the road on a little dirt
- 36:40Speaker 2: track at The daninong's AND i just. STOPPED i was,
- 36:43Speaker 2: LIKE i feel this right? Now how fucking good is my? Life?
- 36:49Speaker 1: Yep, yeah? Yep isn't that? Interesting it's like when you
- 36:54Speaker 1: do one of my mentors back in the day used
- 36:57Speaker 1: to tell, me AND i now tell. People so it's
- 36:59Speaker 1: Not craig, Concepts so give me no. Accolades but every
- 37:04Speaker 1: day you'd, say every, day get up and do a
- 37:05Speaker 1: treasure hunt on your, life you, know like think about
- 37:10Speaker 1: the shit in your. Life that's and you know that
- 37:12Speaker 1: stuff THAT i talk. About can you walk up some,
- 37:15Speaker 1: Stairs can you turn on a? Tap can you open
- 37:17Speaker 1: a fridge and there's food in? It can you press
- 37:20Speaker 1: a button and cold air or warm air comes? Out
- 37:23Speaker 1: do you have a? Car can do you have a?
- 37:26Speaker 1: Job do you have any? Money does someone love? You you,
