- 0:00Hey friends, welcome back to the podcast.
- 0:03Thanks for joining me on In the Stillness.
- 0:05This is friendly and I hope you are having a great day so far.
- 0:09Today we are continuing in chapter one of Second
- 0:13Thessalonians. And I want to say this passage,
- 0:17although it's not a ton of verses, it is a little heavier,
- 0:21but it's super important and honestly very encouraging when
- 0:25we understand what Paul is getting at in this section.
- 0:29He is writing to believers who are experiencing suffering
- 0:32because of their faith. And instead of trying to just
- 0:36explain it away, he actually reframes it.
- 0:39He shows them that suffering has purpose in the life of a
- 0:44believer. So today we're going to be
- 0:47talking about what suffering looks like in the modern day for
- 0:50Christians, why God allows it, and the hope that we have in the
- 0:55midst of it. So let's go ahead and read
- 0:57through the verses in chapter 1, verses 5 through 10.
- 1:03All of this is evidence that God's judgement is right.
- 1:07And as a result, you will be counted worthy of the Kingdom of
- 1:10God for which you are suffering. God is just.
- 1:15He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you and give
- 1:19relief to you who are troubled and to us as well.
- 1:23This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in
- 1:27blazing fire with His powerful angels.
- 1:31He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the
- 1:35gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with
- 1:39everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the
- 1:43Lord and from the glory of His might on the day He comes to be
- 1:48glorified in His holy people and to be marvelled at among all
- 1:52those who have believed. This includes you because you
- 1:56believed our testimony to you. OK, First off, I want to talk
- 2:03about the word suffering because when we read passages like this,
- 2:08I think it's important to acknowledge that there are
- 2:11believers in parts of the world right now that are suffering
- 2:14intense persecution that's seen through imprisonment and
- 2:18torture, even death, simply for following Jesus.
- 2:23But suffering for Christ does not always look look like that
- 2:27everywhere. For many Christians today,
- 2:30suffering might look like rejection, whether that's in a
- 2:33friend group or being misunderstood, losing
- 2:37opportunities because you refuse to compromise your values,
- 2:42standing firm in purity when culture mocks it, or being
- 2:47criticized for holding biblical truths and living them out.
- 2:51Those things are real hardships and that is included in
- 2:55suffering. As a believer, Jesus told us
- 2:59that things like this would happen in John 1633.
- 3:03He said in this world you will have trouble, but take heart,
- 3:08for I have overcome the world. I want us to think about if
- 3:12Jesus, the most worthy one, the Lamb of God, endured suffering.
- 3:19It should not surprise us that following him involves suffering
- 3:23too. Revelation 59 calls him the only
- 3:27one worthy to open the scroll. And yet Paul says something
- 3:31interesting here. Our endurance and suffering is
- 3:35evidence that we are considered worthy of the Kingdom of God.
- 3:39It's not because we earn it, but because our perseverance.
- 3:43It shows that our faith is genuine.
- 3:46Suffering actually makes us look more like Jesus.
- 3:51When we walk through hardship, we begin to understand more
- 3:54deeply what Christ has experienced.
- 3:57We see that he willingly walked through every single emotion,
- 4:02more than we can even fathom, every single trial that exists
- 4:05on this earth. He did that because it allows us
- 4:09to depend on him more. Paul says in Philippians 310
- 4:15through 11, something super fascinating.
- 4:17He writes that he desires to know Christ, to know the power
- 4:22of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings
- 4:26becoming like him in his death. Now at first that might sound
- 4:31strange because no one naturally just wants suffering.
- 4:37But Paul understood that if you truly follow Jesus in a world
- 4:41that celebrates the opposite of his values, opposition and
- 4:46conflict, it will come. But God uses those trials for
- 4:50good. Scripture shows us several
- 4:53purposes for suffering. First of all, it pushes us to
- 4:56look upward instead of inward, to look up to the Lord for help
- 5:02instead of ourselves. When life is easy, it's more
- 5:07tempting to depend on our own ability and strength.
- 5:11But going through trials, they remind us that we need God, they
- 5:15shift our focus back to Him, and they keep us spiritually awake.
- 5:20Jesus warned us in Mark Mark 13, verses 35 through 36 to stay
- 5:25watchful and to stay alert. Secondly, suffering builds
- 5:31stronger character. Romans 5 through through 5 tells
- 5:35us that suffering produces perseverance, perseverance
- 5:39produces character, and character then produces hope.
- 5:43So God uses difficulty to mold and shape us.
- 5:48And thirdly, suffering gives us opportunities to comfort others.
- 5:52In 2nd Corinthians 1 verses 3 through 5, I've mentioned this
- 5:57in other episodes. This is my passage or verses of
- 6:00the year because my word of the year for the Lord is comforter.
- 6:04But it says that God comforts us in our troubles so that we can
- 6:10comfort others with the same comfort that we have received
- 6:13from him. So our hardest seasons can
- 6:17become the very thing that God uses to speak to someone else.
- 6:21Later. Suffering also reveals where we
- 6:24truly stand with Christ. It's easy to follow Jesus when
- 6:29it costs nothing, but when obedience becomes challenging
- 6:33and difficult, that is when true faith is tested.
- 6:39Jesus even calls us to do things that go against our natural
- 6:42instincts. He says to love your enemies and
- 6:45to pray for those who persecute you because that kind of love
- 6:50reflects the heart of Christ. In this passage, Paul's
- 6:55reminding us that everyone will stand before the judgement seat
- 6:59of God. For true believers who are
- 7:02pursuing righteousness daily, that day is not something to
- 7:06fear. It's something that we can
- 7:07actually look forward to. It also takes pressure off of
- 7:11us, off of our abilities because we are not the judge.
- 7:17God is the one who sits on the judgement seat.
- 7:20He is the one who sees everything from heaven, and he
- 7:23will deal with every injustice perfectly.
- 7:27But Paul also gives a serious warning here.
- 7:32He says that judgement is coming for those who don't know God and
- 7:37don't obey the gospel of Jesus. That distinction matters because
- 7:43belief alone is not what sets someone apart.
- 7:47James 219 says you believe that there is one God good.
- 7:53Even the demons believe that and shudder.
- 7:57So y'all, the difference is obedience, submission to God's
- 8:02authority and sovereignty. That's what distinguishes a true
- 8:06follower of Christ. This passage is inviting us to
- 8:10examine our own lives. Let me ask y'all, are you
- 8:16obeying God fully or only in the parts of life that feel
- 8:20comfortable? If Jesus returned today, would
- 8:24you run toward him confidently, knowing that you belong to Him
- 8:29in His family, that you are a Co heir with Christ, and that you
- 8:32have pursued the life He has called you to live?
- 8:37Or is there something holding you back from that freedom, from
- 8:40that confidence? Scripture tells us that God's
- 8:43commands are actually for our good.
- 8:45We see in Deuteronomy 10, verses 12 through 13 that we are called
- 8:50to walk in obedience to Him. And Paul uses strong imagery in
- 8:55this passage talking about everlasting destruction.
- 8:59That's referencing Revelation 20 verse 14 and it is the lake of
- 9:05fire because he is emphasizing that this decision to follow
- 9:11Christ, It is weighty but it is real because there will come a
- 9:15day when there are no more second chances.
- 9:19So the question is what are we doing with the time that we have
- 9:24right now? For a non believer listening to
- 9:28this who does not know Jesus, that question is about
- 9:32salvation. Do you want to be saved?
- 9:36And for believers listening, are you using your life to boldly
- 9:42declare the gospel of Jesus and to share the truth that could
- 9:46lead someone else to salvation? So I'm going to go ahead and
- 9:52close that in prayer. I'm going to make it a little
- 9:53bit more brief because I have a few verses that I want to read
- 9:56over y'all. But Heavenly Father, we just
- 10:00thank you for your word and for the truth that it speaks into
- 10:04our lives, that it is able to teach us, to correct us, to
- 10:09rebuke us, but to train us up in righteousness so that we can be
- 10:14thoroughly equipped as servants of God.
- 10:18Would you help us to endure faithfully through suffering, to
- 10:22use it to grow stronger in our faith and to endure so that our
- 10:28lives reflect your Kingdom, Jesus and what you endured on
- 10:33our behalf. Give us courage to obey you
- 10:36fully and to trust you in every single season that we walk
- 10:39through in Jesus name, Amen. OK, so just two passages I want
- 10:46to read over you all. First of all, James 1 verses 2
- 10:50through 3 it says, consider it pure joy, my brothers and
- 10:55sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because
- 10:59you know that the testing of your faith produces
- 11:02perseverance. The second one I want to read is
- 11:06first Peter chapter 4 verses 12 through 16.
- 11:10Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal
- 11:15that has come on you to test you as though something strange were
- 11:18happening to you. But rejoice in as much as you
- 11:22participate in the sufferings of Christ so that you may be
- 11:26overjoyed when His glory is revealed.
- 11:29If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are
- 11:32blessed, for the spirit of glory and of God rests on you.
- 11:38If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any
- 11:42other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler.
- 11:46However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed,
- 11:50but praise God that you bear that name.
- 11:55OK, so that is what I have for y'all today for this podcast.
- 12:00I'm praying that it just helps you look at suffering from a
- 12:04different, different perspective and that you can appreciate it
- 12:09more. Although it is not something
- 12:11that is enjoyable in the moment, it strengthens us and it calls
- 12:15us higher and teaches us to rely more fully on the Lord for
- 12:19strength. I hope that y'all have a great
- 12:21rest of your day and I will see y'all on the next episode.
