- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi, my name is Selina Myers, and I'm probably gonna
- 0:02Speaker 1: say some things in this video that are not considered PC,
- 0:04Speaker 1: but it's just how it was said to my parents
- 0:06Speaker 1: in the early 2000s. That was a different time. If
- 0:09Speaker 1: you were not alive then, apologize if you were. I
- 0:12Speaker 1: also apologize. Not only was that the worst, but the
- 0:14Speaker 1: best time to be alive. You see the title of
- 0:16Speaker 1: this video. We're going to get to it. But I
- 0:18Speaker 1: need to lead with something very important. I need to
- 0:21Speaker 1: explain how I got to this situation. Let's go back
- 0:24Speaker 1: to JK. I promise we're not going back that far,
- 0:26Speaker 1: but we are for just a millisecond. Notes were sent
- 0:29Speaker 1: home to parents. It said, read with your children. Read
- 0:32Speaker 1: books with your children. My parents thought, yes, we will
- 0:35Speaker 1: read to our children. They didn't think, hey, we should
- 0:38Speaker 1: probably teach our kid how to read. I was the
- 0:40Speaker 1: first child. They can't be expected of much. You read that,
- 0:43Speaker 1: you think, yeah, I got it. It's fine. And guess what?
- 0:46Speaker 1: Public school systems served as it does, and nobody realized
- 0:49Speaker 1: that I couldn't read anything until I was in grade two.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Not even cat, dog, and then, no. At the same
- 0:56Speaker 1: time as this, other teachers thought, Hey, Selena seems a
- 0:59Speaker 1: little different. Different wasn't an interesting word. They also thought, hmm,
- 1:03Speaker 1: she can't read. She must be, and this is the
- 1:06Speaker 1: word I'm afraid to say, slow. My grade two teacher, Mrs. Darby,
- 1:10Speaker 1: went to my mother and said, hey, I think Selena
- 1:13Speaker 1: might be a CAP kid. So CAP kids were this
- 1:17Speaker 1: phenomenon that happened in the early 2000s. And it was
- 1:20Speaker 1: children's with, in the word CAP, central, honorary, processing issues.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Every single kid, that they sent to test for this
- 1:29Speaker 1: was positive for this. Oh my God. And the way
- 1:33Speaker 1: they explained it to my parents, this is what they,
- 1:35Speaker 1: they sat them down. They said, okay, this is, This
- 1:38Speaker 1: is how this works. This is how central artery processing
- 1:40Speaker 1: issues work. If you talk about butterflies and you switch
- 1:43Speaker 1: to bears, Selena will still think you're talking about butterflies
- 1:47Speaker 1: for quite some time. It's going to take her a
- 1:49Speaker 1: long time to process and get to that finish line
- 1:51Speaker 1: that we have changed subjects. And the way they explain
- 1:53Speaker 1: to my mom is, again, she's just a little slow,
- 1:57Speaker 1: which I thought was interesting. And you know what's weird?
- 1:59Speaker 1: They said that it had to do with how I
- 2:00Speaker 1: could hear out of different ears. So... I spent the
- 2:03Speaker 1: rest of my school career, at least until high school,
- 2:06Speaker 1: sitting in the front left side of the classroom. Tell me. Explain.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I don't know. And they would set up a Bristol
- 2:11Speaker 1: board because I was having attention deficit issues. Here's the thing, though. Nobody,
- 2:17Speaker 1: not a single soul, diagnosed me with ADHD until I
- 2:21Speaker 1: sought it out in college. Anyways, that was the least
- 2:24Speaker 1: of my problems at this point. They sat me at
- 2:26Speaker 1: the front of the classroom. In the left seat, and
- 2:29Speaker 1: get this, I was not allowed to copy notes from
- 2:32Speaker 1: the chalkboard. No, I was a cap kid. I couldn't
- 2:35Speaker 1: do that. That was too hard for me. It'd be
- 2:37Speaker 1: too hard to copy things from the board onto paper. So,
- 2:40Speaker 1: my friend Stephanie, she took the best notes. they would
- 2:43Speaker 1: photocopy her notes and they would give them to me.
- 2:46Speaker 1: I remember, and this is another thing that I'm afraid
- 2:48Speaker 1: to say because you're gonna get mad at me, but
- 2:49Speaker 1: this is just what my mom said to me in
- 2:51Speaker 1: the early 2000s. She sat me down and she said, Selena,
- 2:54Speaker 1: all we want you to be is average. You are
- 2:56Speaker 1: a cap kid. The world needs burger flippers too. It's okay,
- 2:59Speaker 1: don't try too hard. that okay maybe that's changed a
- 3:03Speaker 1: little bit but that is pretty much exactly what my
- 3:07Speaker 1: mom said to me and i just wasn't held to
- 3:10Speaker 1: a higher standard like my brother my brother the beautiful
- 3:13Speaker 1: wonderful i love my brother joel he's a golden child
- 3:15Speaker 1: i love him called him the golden child our lives
- 3:17Speaker 1: like they say two kids can grow up in the
- 3:19Speaker 1: same family and be raised completely different we were my
- 3:22Speaker 1: parents did their best with me but they also didn't
- 3:24Speaker 1: set their intentions very high with me but I got confused, okay,
- 3:28Speaker 1: because it was very clear that once I learned to read,
- 3:31Speaker 1: in grade two, they taught me how to read, I
- 3:33Speaker 1: picked it up instantly. Not only did I love to read,
- 3:35Speaker 1: I became obsessed with books. I would go to the
- 3:38Speaker 1: Woodstock Public Library, and I would get a stack of
- 3:41Speaker 1: chapter books this high, and I would read them all
- 3:43Speaker 1: in a week, and I would do it every single week.
- 3:46Speaker 1: I loved it. Then I started to write, and by
- 3:49Speaker 1: the time I got into grade, I'd say 10, I
- 3:51Speaker 1: was taking academic English, I was getting fantastic marks in English,
- 3:55Speaker 1: and I absolutely loved it. I loved writing stories, I
- 3:58Speaker 1: loved learning about different pieces of literature through time, and
- 4:02Speaker 1: I was obsessed with books. This was about the same
- 4:04Speaker 1: time Audible was around, I was listening to books, I
- 4:06Speaker 1: was pirating them from the internet. All I knew is
- 4:09Speaker 1: that I loved books, and I loved to write. My
- 4:13Speaker 1: head was full of stories. But, again, I feel like
- 4:16Speaker 1: I wasn't taken that seriously. Even though, get this, in
- 4:19Speaker 1: grade three, in grade three, I had my first poem
- 4:23Speaker 1: published in a book that was sold nationwide. And it
- 4:27Speaker 1: was called, What is White? It was not a racist poem, okay?
- 4:33Speaker 1: It was not. It was about snow and paper. Explain
- 4:35Speaker 1: that to me. I don't know. My brain did it.
- 4:38Speaker 1: So now here's an interesting fact. A lot of you
- 4:40Speaker 1: guys know me for sleepwalking. Dad jokes. I remember something
- 4:46Speaker 1: important to tell you. What's up? I want to get
- 4:49Speaker 1: a job cleaning mirrors. It's something I really can see
- 4:55Speaker 1: myself doing. Sorry, I can see myself doing. And tie-dye.
- 5:00Speaker 1: It's tie-dye time, brothers! You guys know me for comedy
- 5:04Speaker 1: that I do on the internet, but what you guys
- 5:05Speaker 1: don't know is before all of that, I was writing
- 5:08Speaker 1: books nobody read because no one knew who I was.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Clue number one, The Home Reader. I wrote this in
- 5:13Speaker 1: my early 20s, and this was a book about being
- 5:15Speaker 1: a home reader, which is, to other people, best way
- 5:17Speaker 1: I can explain it is partially a medium slash psychic
- 5:20Speaker 1: slash something. It's terribly written, but hey, I wrote this
- 5:23Speaker 1: when I was practically a teenager. Over the years, I
- 5:25Speaker 1: wrote a couple more books. We had Clandestine House and
- 5:28Speaker 1: we also had Blackwick Falls. We got ghosts, we got witches.
- 5:31Speaker 1: But once I got popular on TikTok, I knew that
- 5:34Speaker 1: there was a story that had lived inside of me
- 5:36Speaker 1: my entire life that I wanted to bring out. Because
- 5:40Speaker 1: like many of you, raise your hand in the comments
- 5:42Speaker 1: if this is you, I am obsessed with Twilight. I
- 5:47Speaker 1: am obsessed with vampire diaries. I just love all the
- 5:51Speaker 1: tropes in those books. And I had a story that
- 5:53Speaker 1: had been building inside of me for years. The thing
- 5:57Speaker 1: with vampires is they're always cut down to a certain
- 6:00Speaker 1: kind of people. I wanted there to be a lot
- 6:02Speaker 1: of inclusivity here, but I wanted to write something that
- 6:05Speaker 1: was so juicy. And instead of a girl falling in
- 6:08Speaker 1: love with two boys, we have a girl that's falling
- 6:10Speaker 1: in love with a guy and a girl. I'm sorry.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Is it just bisexual panic inside of me? It probably is.
- 6:16Speaker 1: But I'm not going to lie. For the first time
- 6:18Speaker 1: in my life, out of all the books that I
- 6:20Speaker 1: have ever written, Hollow, let me get through the first edition.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Hollow is the best book I've ever written. And I
- 6:26Speaker 1: love it. And I'm already working on the second one.
- 6:28Speaker 1: I had self-published this. This is the vibe that it
- 6:30Speaker 1: gives off. Very ho-wa-ho-wa-ho-wa. It was out for a bit
- 6:33Speaker 1: when I got an email. So I'm going to be
- 6:36Speaker 1: so freaking honest and clear here. And I'm going to
- 6:38Speaker 1: sound a little selfish. But I'm going to tell you
- 6:41Speaker 1: my three biggest dreams of my whole entire life. I
- 6:44Speaker 1: have done a lot of things. I've done a lot
- 6:46Speaker 1: of really cool things and I have achieved a lot
- 6:47Speaker 1: of my dreams, but I have a top three. Okay,
- 6:50Speaker 1: here they are. First one was to have a family,
- 6:53Speaker 1: you know, husband, baby. It finally came true. Incredible. I
- 6:56Speaker 1: love it. I'm so thankful. And that would not have
- 6:59Speaker 1: happened without you guys. Next up, I really want a screenplay,
- 7:03Speaker 1: which I am writing now. I've been working on them
- 7:05Speaker 1: to become a movie. To be not just a movie
- 7:07Speaker 1: that like I produce, like a movie that somebody picks up.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Like I'm talking something big like Blumhouse or A24 or Neon,
- 7:13Speaker 1: something huge like that. Because I love to write and
- 7:16Speaker 1: I think I can write them something they like. But
- 7:17Speaker 1: if you were to ask me, hey, Selena, what is
- 7:20Speaker 1: the number one thing you want to be taken serious
- 7:21Speaker 1: for in your life? What would it be? What is it?
- 7:24Speaker 1: I want people to love my writing. I want to
- 7:27Speaker 1: be taken seriously as a writer because here's the truth.
- 7:29Speaker 1: What comes here and comes out of my mouth, not
- 7:31Speaker 1: the same. What comes out of here and comes out
- 7:33Speaker 1: of my fingers, eloquent as heck. See, I don't write
- 7:36Speaker 1: like I sound. I promise you that right now. I
- 7:38Speaker 1: got an email last summer. We were actually filming House
- 7:41Speaker 1: on Eden and it was from, and I'm going to
- 7:42Speaker 1: tell you right now, I almost freaking passed out. It
- 7:45Speaker 1: was from HarperCollins, one of the big three huge publishers
- 7:48Speaker 1: in in the whole entire world, and they said, we
- 7:51Speaker 1: love hollow, pull it, let's make it better, let's put
- 7:53Speaker 1: it back out in the world. So this is just
- 7:55Speaker 1: a proof, okay? This is a proof, but this is
- 7:58Speaker 1: what the book's gonna look like. It's going to be hardcover.
- 8:01Speaker 1: It's gonna have sprayed edges with blood. It looks so good.
- 8:04Speaker 1: I can't wait to get my hands on a copy.
- 8:06Speaker 1: These have been going out to people. Lots of people
- 8:08Speaker 1: have read this, but my dream... is to be on
- 8:10Speaker 1: the New York bestseller list. That is out of all
- 8:12Speaker 1: my dreams, other than family, like I have my three
- 8:15Speaker 1: top dreams. That is my three top dreams. I just
- 8:17Speaker 1: want to be on the New York bestseller list, which
- 8:19Speaker 1: I know is going to be hard because a lot
- 8:20Speaker 1: of people have bought this book back in the beginning,
- 8:23Speaker 1: but it is going to be such a collector's piece.
- 8:25Speaker 1: But along with that, I have to tell you the
- 8:26Speaker 1: absolute craziest thing that happened in the whole world, but
- 8:29Speaker 1: I must preface with this. I have a front bathroom
- 8:31Speaker 1: in my house, okay? And when I moved in three
- 8:33Speaker 1: years ago, I cut pages out of Hollow, I cut
- 8:36Speaker 1: pages out of Twilight, and I cut pages out of
- 8:38Speaker 1: Vampire Diaries. And I did the wallpaper in this bathroom,
- 8:41Speaker 1: just in these three books pages. And I mixed my
- 8:44Speaker 1: book with these vampire books because in my head, I'm like,
- 8:47Speaker 1: this is going to get me up there with the
- 8:48Speaker 1: greats because I love this story. And I think that
- 8:51Speaker 1: it's such a quick, fun, spooky, delicious kind of read.
- 8:55Speaker 1: And the next book, like this is a teaser. Do
- 8:56Speaker 1: you see this? It's not a small book, but like, damn,
- 8:59Speaker 1: the next one's going to be huge, bro. Anyways, I
- 9:01Speaker 1: would poop in there and I would manifest That this
- 9:04Speaker 1: book would be taken seriously and it would get there
- 9:06Speaker 1: and somebody would notice it and it would be a thing.
- 9:09Speaker 1: And then HarperCollins emailed and it was amazing. And then
- 9:11Speaker 1: an even better thing happened, okay? Vampire Diaries books. Read
- 9:15Speaker 1: them all 10 times. Not gonna lie, I love the
- 9:16Speaker 1: Twilight movies. The books, they're great. But I will choose
- 9:19Speaker 1: the Vampire Diary books over Twilight any freaking day of
- 9:22Speaker 1: the week. Apologies, sorry. I love LJ Smith. I love
- 9:25Speaker 1: all the series. Daughters of Darkness. I don't know if
- 9:27Speaker 1: you've read all of LJ Smith's books, but they are incredible.
- 9:30Speaker 1: I said, please, can you reach out and see if
- 9:32Speaker 1: she will read my book and say anything about my book?
- 9:35Speaker 1: And she did. They emailed me and said, wow, we
- 9:37Speaker 1: didn't expect to get this much. LJ Smith had written
- 9:40Speaker 1: a letterhead of magic about my book. And I bawled
- 9:45Speaker 1: and I bawled and I bawled for days. And I
- 9:46Speaker 1: ended up emailing her back. And a week later... I
- 9:49Speaker 1: got the email that LJ Smith had passed away. Knowing
- 9:52Speaker 1: that my book was probably one of the last things
- 9:54Speaker 1: she ever read and endorsing my book was one of
- 9:58Speaker 1: the last things she did. Well, forever be the most
- 10:01Speaker 1: honored I have ever felt in my entire life. We
- 10:04Speaker 1: have a little blurb here that's on the front, which
- 10:07Speaker 1: is crazy, and it says, Brilliant new vampire lore. Spine tingling. L.J. Smith.
- 10:14Speaker 1: I'm not going to share like the entire thing, but
- 10:17Speaker 1: I'll give you another sentence that she had said. A
- 10:19Speaker 1: fresh look at the vampire scene was some brilliant new
- 10:22Speaker 1: vampire lore. Myers has a lean, deft way with words
- 10:25Speaker 1: that engrosses you all the way to the end. Spine-tingling. Overall,
- 10:29Speaker 1: it is a great and unpredictable ride. It features a
- 10:33Speaker 1: look at the dark underbelly of vampire politics and betrayals,
- 10:36Speaker 1: but also of strength and goodness. The lore reminds me
- 10:39Speaker 1: of Anne Rice's interview with the vampire. You will be
- 10:42Speaker 1: thoroughly entertained. She literally put moments that she liked in
- 10:45Speaker 1: the book. Like, yes, the liquid looked like blood. Wow, spine-tingling.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Other great moments when Mia wakes up in her coffin
- 10:52Speaker 1: after dying and the introductions afterwards. Double wow. Mia's first
- 10:57Speaker 1: kiss with a certain high school sweetheart, touching and heartbreaking.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Hollow has so many meanings, so creepy, and no spoilers,
- 11:04Speaker 1: but there are some doozies in the end. I just
- 11:07Speaker 1: have goosebumps thinking about it and knowing that she's not here.
- 11:10Speaker 1: But I feel this unbelievable urgency that, like, I feel
- 11:14Speaker 1: like a predecessor and I need to create things and
- 11:18Speaker 1: not let these tropey vampire delicious moments die. And I just, um,
- 11:24Speaker 1: I want to ask you a favor. That's all that
- 11:26Speaker 1: this leads to and that is the truth. And the
- 11:28Speaker 1: favor is pre-order my book. Pre-order it. I want Hollow
- 11:32Speaker 1: to live on. I want to write so many versions
- 11:36Speaker 1: of it. I want this story to live. I don't
- 11:38Speaker 1: want it to be two books, three books, four books.
- 11:40Speaker 1: I want this vampire universe to go on. It bleeds
- 11:44Speaker 1: with real life. That's the one thing that I do
- 11:46Speaker 1: with vampires that I feel other people don't do. I
- 11:50Speaker 1: make my vampires feel like it could be your next
- 11:52Speaker 1: door neighbor. I make it feel like it could be
- 11:54Speaker 1: that person in school. I make it really believable. And
- 11:57Speaker 1: there are reviews out there that are so freaking good.
- 12:00Speaker 1: There's reviews out there that are so bad. And I
- 12:02Speaker 1: need to understand that as a writer that people are
- 12:04Speaker 1: going to hate it and people are going to love it.
- 12:06Speaker 1: But what I love most is that people gave it
- 12:08Speaker 1: a chance. And people read it. Which is... It's absolutely awesome,
- 12:13Speaker 1: and I hope you love it. I have links everywhere
- 12:15Speaker 1: where you can go and you can pre-order Hollow, but
- 12:18Speaker 1: my dream is to be on the New York bestseller list.
- 12:20Speaker 1: I want to be number one, I'm not going to lie.
- 12:22Speaker 1: I don't want to be two or three or four,
- 12:24Speaker 1: and I know that's being greedy, but I believe in Hollow.
- 12:27Speaker 1: I definitely believe in the next Hollow book. This I
- 12:30Speaker 1: wrote five years ago. I'm barely that person anymore. Four
- 12:33Speaker 1: years ago, almost five. I'm barely her anymore. And I
- 12:36Speaker 1: read this and I love it. But knowing what's happening
- 12:39Speaker 1: in the second book right now gives me freaking goosebumps.
- 12:43Speaker 1: So if you love me and if I've ever made
- 12:45Speaker 1: you laugh and you want to get yourself a little
- 12:47Speaker 1: Christmas present or get it for someone else, the pre-orders
- 12:50Speaker 1: are happening now and the books are going to be
- 12:51Speaker 1: coming out soon. on January 13th. And I'm going to
- 12:54Speaker 1: be going on a freaking book tour. So I am
- 12:57Speaker 1: going to be going to some locations. You are going
- 12:59Speaker 1: to be able to see them right here. And there
- 13:01Speaker 1: are going to be QR codes beside them for you
- 13:03Speaker 1: to scan. I'm not sure if the Canadian dates are
- 13:06Speaker 1: up yet, but you will be able to buy tickets
- 13:08Speaker 1: for the Canadian dates coming up pretty soon. It's also
- 13:11Speaker 1: crazy to go on a book tour because I've never
- 13:13Speaker 1: done anything publicly that wasn't with like Chris or something.
- 13:17Speaker 1: So going out all by myself, I'm so scared people
- 13:19Speaker 1: aren't going to show up. I want to hug everyone.
- 13:22Speaker 1: And love everyone and kiss everyone. And I just, um,
- 13:27Speaker 1: I want to thank you for giving me a chance.
- 13:29Speaker 1: And if you have read Hollow, please drop down below.
- 13:32Speaker 1: what you thought of it you guys built this life
- 13:35Speaker 1: with me together we all worked hard for everything that
- 13:38Speaker 1: i've achieved and i would love to see hollow on
- 13:40Speaker 1: the big screens i would love for hollow to fill
- 13:43Speaker 1: the hole that we have all felt since there's been
- 13:46Speaker 1: no twilight movies and no new vampire diaries let's have
- 13:49Speaker 1: hollow be the next thing and no it's not chris
- 13:52Speaker 1: on the cover everybody thinks it is and i totally
- 13:53Speaker 1: see it now but if you want to know chris
- 13:55Speaker 1: is a character in this book so there are going
- 13:57Speaker 1: to be some familiar names in here and you're going
- 13:59Speaker 1: to know exactly who they are i love you guys
- 14:02Speaker 1: Thanks for giving me a chance. Until next time. Bye,
- 14:04Speaker 1: Boo Crew! I'm a vampire, get it? Bye!
