- 0:33I'm so drunk. Welcome back to deliver blunt
- 0:41penknife the doctor commentary podcast.
- 0:45We're back for episode 2 of the Aztecs aren't we?
- 0:50Joe we are we were riveted and educated during episode 1
- 0:54lutely. Actually I do have a question
- 0:57few straight now. I have sort of a Trivial Pursuit
- 1:08educational. Doctor, Who do you think?
- 1:13Do you think Doctor Who should educate or entertain?
- 1:18Because I only ask you this because I feel like they dropped
- 1:21the educate over time. Yes.
- 1:23And Lenin to entertain. Yes.
- 1:27I think it some of the best stops who can do both in time,
- 1:32but you can do it, two, different levels.
- 1:34So it depends what you want to do with your sword.
- 1:36This one very much educated. It's I think but it really
- 1:41entertained as well because you can have the drama plus the
- 1:47education part as well. So as long as you've got the
- 1:49drama working, then that's that's fine.
- 1:52The education can come out of that.
- 1:55What I mean is there's a fact that's a nice comedy in this as
- 1:57well as. Yes a lovely character work
- 2:00alongside good but there is a list of facts as well.
- 2:03Yeah but it's when your story stops so that someone can
- 2:07explain lots of facts to you. Are you talking about the
- 2:10sareng, a country that could count particularly, okay.
- 2:14But there aren't, there are examples all through Doctor, Who
- 2:17ain't? You've got sequence in the Dalek
- 2:19invasion of Earth where they're talking about something and it
- 2:24feels like it's plunked in the educational remix whereas
- 2:31sometimes in and again sometimes in the Pertwee era where the
- 2:34doctor is explaining things to Joe it's just like a barrage of
- 2:39Of yaks. I find as well like there's like
- 2:42a lots of moral lessons in. Yes, they end up planning on the
- 2:45dollhouse. Don't run with scissors.
- 2:47Joe. I do wish.
- 2:57Like, I would love to have seen more historical Z.
- 2:59Yeah, Pat routes time. Yeah.
- 3:01I think it's a real, it's a real shame that the historical part
- 3:05of Doctor Who is dropped, because they say, they're not
- 3:08popular, and I'm going to say something potentially
- 3:12contentious now, okay? I don't think that it so I
- 3:15obviously, they brought back historical roles in new?
- 3:18Who, yes, in a fairly big way. Yes.
- 3:21And I think there are a couple In Rusty, Davis, and Steven
- 3:26Moffat it's time. I'm going to point out fires of
- 3:29Pompeii. Yeah.
- 3:30Especially the latter half of that human nature and Vincent
- 3:38and the doctor. Yeah, there are serious enough
- 3:42and and they have a bit of gravity about them, but I don't
- 3:45think it's until Chris chibnall came back that the historical is
- 3:49really started taping of the heart.
- 3:52No no no. I'm having a Loss of impacts,
- 3:55Rosa. And demons of the Punjab are two
- 3:58of my favorite stories from series 11 Mighty.
- 4:02And yeah, and he, taking Doctor Who to different parts of
- 4:05history as well. And it's not British history
- 4:09based on reports and 12. I was just wondering that as
- 4:12well. It's Nicholas has not yet era
- 4:15which is very much entertaining. Yes.
- 4:17So although there was some education in there as well.
- 4:20Oh, I suppose as parts of stifle to Yes.
- 4:24Yeah of course yeah so yeah. And then obviously in the flux
- 4:28he's and there's a very secret. Yes.
- 4:29Vote. But that's not necessarily
- 4:31history, that's gone. Wrong history perverse which is
- 4:34yeah. But do you
- 4:50have had Some kind of alien threats.
- 4:54I think. I think, I think they might be,
- 4:57they should they should be brave enough to know.
- 4:58They could have taken kraskow Alrosa.
- 5:00Yeah. And it would have been just as
- 5:01good and they could have taken out the memory creatures in
- 5:05demons, the Punjab, and that story had enough drama in it
- 5:09without Dash as well. And job is it is that it is?
- 5:13Yeah that's a really great episode more.
- 5:16I think about that the more. I like it, but that's what, you
- 5:19know. They're kind of the Lush
- 5:20production. Value of Punjab.
- 5:22Yes, that's what the Aztecs would look like.
- 5:24If it was made. Exactly, you know, they would go
- 5:26and filming in the temples in, Mexico, that place?
- 5:30Yes. That one
- 5:58Okay. Yes.
- 6:00Yes, just failed history. What did history a level?
- 6:10But we never did the Aztecs house.
- 6:12Yes, it's a very long time ago where you found the Aztecs -.
- 6:54Education inform is not to be confused with the other dogs at
- 7:03home. That's Jason Miller.
- 7:07It is because your doc oh ho and he's doctor Dr. Opposed our
- 7:11fucking original idea these days as well.
- 7:25Yes. Their religion.
- 7:56Yes. It's a 2-0 away from Doctor Who?
- 8:02Yes, I've seen a few things he's done.
- 8:04I never say I hear he did a phenomenal performance.
- 8:07In Brighton Rock. I've never seen their boards a
- 8:10lot, but it's not the kind of story.
- 8:12I do like side gangsters and gangs in our writer.
- 8:19Yeah, it's just down the road. You see here how?
- 8:22He's upset her. Yes.
- 8:24And now he Comforts. Yes.
- 8:26And that shows how much his Doctor has mellowed over, which
- 8:29kind of poison. Oh, well, yeah, for sure.
- 8:31Yeah. And compare that to how we was
- 8:35in, in the first story. It's really, really interesting
- 8:39to see how he's he's realized how to do this.
- 8:42And so funny thing about that. Yeah, he's honest on The Voyage
- 8:47of Discovery as much as everyone else.
- 8:48That's really interesting point as well because I think in any
- 8:52future iterations of the doctor, the development comes with the
- 8:55actor softening in the role. Very Try one try out and finds
- 8:59his feet. I find around the moon base.
- 9:00Yes, where he's worked out. What hasn't worked?
- 9:05Not really. He's, he's really pitching.
- 9:07What he's doing with the character with / way.
- 9:10He's a bit of a prick until Katie many comes along and even
- 9:13then, it's still a. Yeah?
- 9:14And then, but then he softens, yeah, sort of ten thousand
- 9:17eight, nine and ten. And that's just the actor being
- 9:20comfortable in the role again and asking for his moments of
- 9:23child. But I think they're specifically
- 9:25developing these carrot. Yeah, I think over the First
- 9:28first season there is definite development and change in all of
- 9:33them. And when you get that lovely
- 9:35scene at the start of the sentence rights, where they're
- 9:37laughing about, where they've been, and if so, that's quite
- 9:40the spirit of Adventure and officer program,
- 9:57The brand the console together and then the end of that story.
- 10:00Yeah. And brilliantly a few years
- 10:37back. When, when, if you're about to
- 10:38tell me you've had sex with me in college.
- 10:41Okay? Cool.
- 10:46Scholar audios. We just finished our first
- 10:49series with Brendan and unfortunate.
- 10:51Brendan went back to Australia Road really isn't?
- 10:54Yeah, absolutely but a couple of hours we were putting Mark, he
- 11:00messaged us on Twitter to say what is another part for me?
- 11:06Seriously, seriously, you know, find all videos so he was he was
- 11:11local to me. He was in some of the next town
- 11:15and never told me this before, but to save my story.
- 11:58The blade 60s, early 70s, and they showed a couple of episodes
- 12:02and he did a live commentary again in Camberley.
- 12:05And I wish I'd gone to that would have been really
- 12:08interesting to see but yeah what a lovely man?
- 12:11That's really good. Love profiting stories, Daniela
- 12:16stack up and say we're not here for your educational.
- 12:20You're here for the town. The topic of this at school and
- 12:38just thinking, I don't get on with this one because I didn't
- 12:42know how to pronounce the names of the characters because I the
- 12:47Topsail. Yeah, but it's written down with
- 12:49teas and eggs is a Nails all over the place.
- 12:51Yeah, I had no idea in the story.
- 12:59Um, it's a very brief novel. Yes, I read it this year and it
- 13:06just didn't seem to have the complexity of how and I think
- 13:10it's the performance that you're missing.
- 13:12Yes, on the pages are bitch, right?
- 13:14Yeah but the performances of really rooted particularly John
- 13:18counteracts Jeong Runa. I love him being aware.
- 13:22He's like smoothies so many media lady ever had the power
- 13:27behind everything this to me. Small mining.
- 13:32Yeah. When he's in the background of a
- 13:36scene, he's watching everything and watching everyone's
- 13:39reactions and you can see him thinking the whole time, it's
- 13:47Robert Ash. Yeah, it comes down in the
- 13:57Smugglers as well. It's he is.
- 14:04We think the tax really collect. Oh yeah.
- 14:08Can I tell you something? That you cannot lie right in the
- 14:11DVD extras on the outside. Yeah, he's being interviewed
- 14:14along with burn. Okay.
- 14:16Yes. Are being super nasty about
- 14:19William Hartnell? Yeah, it's not.
- 14:20Yeah, it's not pleasant saying that backdrop again in the
- 14:24temple. I just love it.
- 14:25Beautiful. It's not.
- 14:26What I love is that they've done it.
- 14:27So it looks like the sunlight is here.
- 14:29Yeah, the ramparts are stacked like yeah, it's beautiful, isn't
- 14:33it looks 3D. Yeah.
- 14:38Is that your background just eavesdropping?
- 15:04The pictures were he's not got the way bulb.
- 15:09That's how he looks. Oh no.
- 15:12Look, you can see the corner of the settlers yours and mine will
- 15:22never be. And I think that sums up Hot
- 15:25Wheels doctor, doesn't it? Look at that small.
- 15:28He's he's gonna be fucking everybody.
- 16:04We talk a lot. You don't get every day.
- 16:08Someone has made the attacks of costume.
- 16:12No. Yeah with the big sunflower hat
- 16:16and she looked resplendent. It was absolutely brilliant.
- 16:20There's also Frazier a quark. Well someone may have for
- 16:23someone might call at the Utopia.
- 16:27Yeah went to in Bristol someone made a wind up quark and it adds
- 16:31a like you know yeah awkward thing at the back end.
- 16:34Do it is, aren't when. This is one of those stories
- 16:39where I really wish you we can see in color.
- 16:42Yes, it's wingspan. Its vibrant.
- 16:44I think there are a few color. There are color photographs on
- 16:47there. That just looks so beautiful.
- 16:52Oh this is fabulous because he uses the doctor doesn't need to.
- 16:58Yeah, worry down. Ian.
- 17:00Yeah. In order to gain access to it.
- 17:02So it's a lot. It's all this dangerous.
- 17:04Yeah, exactly. It's it's like a political drama
- 17:08but it's just that in the Aztec time.
- 17:09So they're all stabbing each other in the back and all trying
- 17:12to get one off on each other. But this is a world away from
- 17:16like I don't know, Mariners. It's like the moon base and
- 17:22things like that. Where it's just yeah the
- 17:24monsters attacking and we need a big weapon.
- 17:26Stop them and it's as simple as that.
- 17:28It's so simple yet. So, is this has got layers?
- 17:30Yeah, this is not twist, you know, and substance.
- 17:34Yeah. And this is where your
- 17:36historicals give a contrast to your science fiction stories.
- 17:42But this is where my argument comes in where people go.
- 17:44Why has it kind of evolved into that?
- 17:46So kind of pure entertainment in order to survive but this is
- 17:50really entertaining. It's great TV.
- 17:52Yeah, it does and suddenly you've got bigger shadows and
- 17:58things like that because you can light it differently and it's
- 18:01not one great big long lighting. Oh yeah you'll be told who to
- 18:21marry. This is a good thing.
- 18:24This is a good story for Susan. Yeah I can often get a lot to do
- 18:29but she gets really interesting material.
- 18:32I would be told who to marry Like, which is what they are.
- 19:19Yeah, my brother is my begins with J deep in.
- 19:22So in Dart language, cat helmet on external.
- 19:26Yeah, fabulous. That's really great.
- 19:29Isn't it? Look at that.
- 19:30I think I could use that, you know, some kind of sexual right
- 19:33side. That's your furry side coming
- 19:41out, I'm sorry to do this live on a recording.
- 19:48Pretend to be dogs and they put on the dog masks and they go on
- 19:52their doors and they have sex with each other, like dogs. how
- 19:58to push your head to answer that because if I say yes, I do know
- 20:01that then Poison of the plant.
- 20:28Yes. To poison his friend.
- 20:31Do you know which tree has poisonous?
- 20:33Sap, which street has poisonous a Laburnum tree?
- 20:36Do you know how I know that Mark?
- 20:38The problem is that pops up? You feel like you've wasted your
- 20:56life? Do you think this is the
- 21:08strongest historical? Oh well I yes I do actually, I
- 21:13mean I'm going to make a punt from the things that different
- 21:15one. Okay.
- 21:16And you may disagree with me, I think it's terribly boring.
- 21:19I think the massacre of st. Bartholomew's Eve is, all you do
- 21:23that. The full name of?
- 21:24Wow. I think it's pretty much
- 21:26Peerless as a script and I've almost willing to bet, Patty
- 21:30Russell's duration of that was incredible.
- 21:34I struggle a bit with that. I've been bit Because of on the
- 21:38audio, everyone sounds the same, okay?
- 21:42And I've been, it just confuses me about which character is,
- 21:44which because it's not always clear to me.
- 21:48I think seeing it would be a completely different experience,
- 21:52but I've always, yeah, Peter Purvis is never better than in
- 21:58that saw reheating. He is leading the series of that
- 22:01your voice is him. And That's yeah, that's that's
- 22:09one, but it's not a favorite. It's a bit drive.
- 22:13From, I like a bit. This has, this has fun as well,
- 22:19and they were comedy moments. And, and just frankly, like I
- 22:22was going to comment about this sequence and the lighting in
- 22:26this, see ya? It just looks amazing, you know,
- 22:31and you can't see them a scar and that is that yeah that makes
- 22:35that makes it more difficult. I would say, isn't it from the
- 22:48land? It's quite quite a lot to drop
- 22:52on somebody and this then really affects all lot to extend where
- 22:59he like that. Yeah he has the doubt because of
- 23:03her and has to take himself off. Okay.
- 23:07Bye. Bye by throwing him into an
- 23:10epistemological quandary. Wow!
- 23:13No! No, I got that line from Paul.
- 23:14Alright, throwing him into goes off into the hills, doesn't he?
- 23:26And he will and he's not killed by Cortez.
- 23:29Yeah. So she's done.
- 23:32What happens in the fires of Pompeii?
- 23:33She has saved someone yes. Just one.
- 23:36One person that it's nice. That that's inadvertent in it.
- 23:39Yes, it has not done today. You've got to do it, you know,
- 23:44although I love that scene as well, I'm telling you that's up,
- 23:47take the, how awful what I think it is?
- 23:51It Taps into the gala profound good for your people.
- 23:56Blood pressure. These feel great.
- 23:57I love them. They always have like their own
- 24:00little character subplot that. Yes, I got.
- 24:03It's the balance of power between a high place of
- 24:07sacrifice and the hybrid sort of knowledge, and that's the sad
- 24:11again, the central argument, its knowledge versus watching a
- 24:15minute when they set the guards on Hartnell.
- 24:17He loses his shit. Yes, not having any of it.
- 24:29I'm sorry. I'm bringing my see game today.
- 24:59I figure. We look at is resisting arrest.
- 25:06When he's got it. He froze it and remember in the
- 25:09Roman. Yeah.
- 25:10Tosses that guy out of it. Yeah.
- 25:13All the time. If he ever has to hit anyone
- 25:15with his walk, he when you get to them, when there's a
- 25:19suggestion that robot doctors going to take out from him, then
- 25:21the trace, he gets his Cane and he whacks him.
- 25:25You wouldn't believe I can still do it.
- 25:28I can remember the Locking. Don't bring in a dad, so nothing
- 25:32like me. So so is going to get his hero
- 25:43moment with a big fight. He gets compliments.
- 25:45He does. Yeah.
- 25:48I think it's worth pointing out. That William Russell is
- 25:52extremely handsome. Yes, he really is and there's
- 25:56something I didn't realize till I was older.
- 25:59What? I'll take it?
- 25:59Yes. Um, the fight is pretty good.
- 26:03Yay. Yeah, it's a bit slow but that's
- 26:06fine because it's it's a different kind of combat.
- 26:09It's not a No II. Don't know why I think I feel
- 26:14like it's quite destructive, but then when they come to blows,
- 26:17yeah, things are actually being destroyed as they come around.
- 26:20So I feel like it's got a bit more of a to it and some time,
- 26:24let me know which stays Acadia ever week and the fighting that
- 26:27honestly not dancing around. The music was dating.
- 26:35Someone recently do this. Yes.
- 26:39What was that all about? I don't know because I forgot to
- 26:42listen to it because I'm a big fan of Doctor Who incidental
- 26:48music and that would be exactly what I forgot.
- 27:06For this one. There are no no not on that
- 27:13floor, your life, it's someone before but only one because he
- 27:22was an asshole. I Define the train station once.
- 27:26So I started my two friends or and so I kind of jumped in and
- 27:31then my two friends got on the train and left me and they kick
- 27:35the shit out of me. Oh, we're not friends anymore.
- 27:50That is a very very sick. Make sure everyone knows exactly
- 27:59what's going on there. Any one of us home you'd get
- 28:03stage Direction, the last. I think I'm James script.
- 28:05All right, I'm just speaking of characters in terms of the
- 28:09verbal. It's yeah.
- 28:10Looking in agony at their hand with I've got a Ford in my head
- 28:14and they explain things in such death is like, as you can see,
- 28:18the first mcgahren did not switch off his translator.
- 28:24Nice. What do you need?
- 28:54Just have a hug. We still got the chop.
- 29:00Yeah, he's not gonna last much longer.
- 29:03Is he? See there's another very 60s
- 29:08move in a minute where the socks all comes in and it's like, you
- 29:13are detection, 7, save him. Is that a massive clothes off?
- 29:22It's going down. Okay, I see what you mean a
- 29:25little bit slow. Yeah, this the dragging.
- 29:29This out the third time to go through, you know?
- 29:32Yeah. I false goddess.
- 29:38My Barracks destroy. It always comes.
- 29:42Don't mess with Barbara especially when it comes to
- 29:45weird. If you are your taxes?
- 29:57Yes. Has he been blacked out up?
- 30:01I don't think you that. I think they've just done.
- 30:03I love you big whore. I've only have to watch the next
- 30:08episode and just make sure now. So I mean I was watching the
- 30:13diet's master plan the other day.
- 30:14Yes, and there's clearly some blacking out going on.
- 30:18That Marv exchange. Yeah, because I'm slightly
- 30:22unfortunate. I'm going to do.
- 30:24I'm going to put you in an awkward position now and ask you
- 30:28God's, if that is an acceptable practice of time or is it
- 30:33something that is a deal-breaker with you watching?
- 30:37Because I know it is for some people?
- 30:39It's well I don't think it would it should ever be looked at as
- 30:44an acceptable practice. However, much it was an Accepted
- 30:48part of how you did things at this time, there are many
- 30:53egregious examples of this Doctor, Who Crusade next year,
- 31:00is not good. And that's tell us when China
- 31:05obviously. Yeah.
- 31:07But you said that in right with the breath.
- 31:10Yeah, I'm not going, I'm not doing that argument but
- 31:16Everything is a product of the time.
- 31:18It is made it like a naivety to it is.
- 31:21Yes. Like it's not an insult, it's
- 31:23not meant to be a fin. It's not actively offensive.
- 31:27It's actively offensive now. Yeah.
- 31:30And it's just the level to which you can accept something as a
- 31:37product of the time it's made in or whether you've built that.
- 31:41That that is unacceptable in any Case.
- 31:45Do you think both? I think you can see it from both
- 31:48things. And I think there there is,
- 31:51there is worse stereotyping of cultural competence, but there
- 32:01is more stereotyping of cultures and types of people.
- 32:07Yeah, in Doctor Who that is worse than a little bit of
- 32:11blacking up. In date.
- 32:14Yeah, and I do think like, you and I, we've made the argument
- 32:18in the past with phrase out, that approaching Doctor, Who is
- 32:23a personal choice. I they're all views are
- 32:27subjective, awesome fact. And so, I think it is okay to
- 32:32say that it's acceptable to watch it and it's okay to say,
- 32:37it's not. Yeah, absolutely.
- 32:38I think both are perfectly fine. It's not, okay, I'm going on
- 32:45right now, sorry, it's not okay, to point at somebody who can
- 32:50watch it and say you are a racist cashing this because
- 32:54you're not less, you are. Yeah, you've got hope that for
- 32:58that. So that's a different argument
- 33:00again, as well. Just by watching tones of when
- 33:04trying doesn't make you racist but how you if you can
- 33:09understand I'm going to get into this argument and a common but
- 33:15if you sometimes you need to consider how things were made.
- 33:19And doesn't necessarily mean you have to approve of how it was
- 33:22made. And just that little bit of
