- 0:12Speaker 1: six point thirty here along the Yukon Sports Network, Varsity
- 0:16Speaker 1: Network Abinavarsitynetwork dot Com. Dan Hurley back with us. Let's
- 0:20Speaker 1: go national for a moment. Coach. Big East four teams,
- 0:24Speaker 1: Top twenty five, Big Tennis four, there SEC eight, Big
- 0:27Speaker 1: twelve six, Texas and UCLA dropped out of the top
- 0:31Speaker 1: twenty five. You got a trip to Austin coming up.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Saint John's jumps in at twenty two. Rick Patino back
- 0:36Speaker 1: in the top twenty five, first time since sixteen and seventeen.
- 0:41Speaker 1: These early season rankings, is it just stuff for us
- 0:44Speaker 1: to talk about or is it meaningful at all?
- 0:49Speaker 2: I mean anything I guess that gets you to talk
- 0:51Speaker 2: about college basketball this time of the year that I
- 0:55Speaker 2: think it's obviously a positive thing. You've got the NFL,
- 0:58Speaker 2: you've got college football, you've got the NBA. You know,
- 1:04Speaker 2: so just trying to get yourself exposure and you know,
- 1:09Speaker 2: getting people to to watch and be interested. Really outside
- 1:14Speaker 2: of March madness is something that uh, you know is
- 1:17Speaker 2: challenging at times for college basketball, as great as the
- 1:20Speaker 2: sport is, and it's probably better experienced in person, you know,
- 1:27Speaker 2: going to a game at Ample with you know, when
- 1:30Speaker 2: when the crowd is engaged, going to a great game
- 1:33Speaker 2: at Gamble, or going to a game of Duke or
- 1:35Speaker 2: Kentucky when they sell out no matter who they're playing,
- 1:39Speaker 2: twenty one thousand people screaming, all wearing blue. I mean,
- 1:43Speaker 2: you know that's college basketball. I think is it struggles
- 1:48Speaker 2: to get attention this time of year, and you know
- 1:50Speaker 2: it's better to be experienced I think this time of
- 1:53Speaker 2: year in person.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Yeah, with I'll tell you those scoreboards that you got
- 1:57Speaker 1: up in Gamble now, the new ones I did once. Wow,
- 2:01Speaker 1: that is fabulous for an in house fan that goes in,
- 2:04Speaker 1: I mean you don't miss anything. The replay monitor is huge,
- 2:07Speaker 1: the scoring, all the details. I mean, that was really
- 2:10Speaker 1: a nice improvement.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Yeah, it makes a big difference. I think seeing it
- 2:16Speaker 2: was pretty cool. It takes a little bit to get
- 2:19Speaker 2: adjusted to, like where the fouls are, where the timeouts are.
- 2:24Speaker 2: You know, I'm used to the the older, outdated board.
- 2:28Speaker 2: So right now I'm trying to re rewire my brain
- 2:33Speaker 2: to look in the right spots to see team fouls
- 2:37Speaker 2: and such. But uh, yeah, you know it's you know,
- 2:41Speaker 2: it's it's a big improvement. Obviously, there's improvements needed, you know,
- 2:45Speaker 2: in both arenas, and it's good to see that that
- 2:50Speaker 2: that you know that we're at least, you know, investing
- 2:53Speaker 2: the money in those places.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Yeah, you're going to see Excel centers going to see
- 2:57Speaker 1: some great improvements here in the next year year and
- 2:59Speaker 1: a half. One thing about monitors in arenas. I don't know.
- 3:04Speaker 1: We see this in football a lot, but even coaches
- 3:07Speaker 1: and players are always looking up at the replays they
- 3:10Speaker 1: see in those huge monitors. Do you ever do that?
- 3:12Speaker 1: Do you look at monitors in the arenas that you're
- 3:15Speaker 1: in and say what happened on that play?
- 3:17Speaker 2: You know what I mean.
- 3:18Speaker 1: It's kind of like you see a lot of that
- 3:21Speaker 1: in television broadcasts, and some coaches do pay attention to
- 3:24Speaker 1: those things. I wonder if you do that only.
- 3:27Speaker 2: If it's something I guess in a monitor situation or
- 3:30Speaker 2: what have you. I say my piece to the officials
- 3:33Speaker 2: about what I think occurred, and then I may ask
- 3:37Speaker 2: Kamani or Luke or someone on the bench. You know, hey,
- 3:40Speaker 2: what did you see? And then you know, at halftime
- 3:43Speaker 2: or based on the what we're able to do technology wise,
- 3:46Speaker 2: we'll confirm it. Like you know, there was a really
- 3:51Speaker 2: bad third foul in Samson at the end of the
- 3:54Speaker 2: first half the other day where he walled up at
- 3:57Speaker 2: the rim and blocked the shot cleanly, and so plays
- 4:00Speaker 2: like that that you know, you go in and watch
- 4:04Speaker 2: so that you can mention to the referee that made
- 4:06Speaker 2: the call. Hey, I think when you see that, you
- 4:10Speaker 2: you you may have blown it. But you're mostly looking
- 4:15Speaker 2: at you know, for your video stuff. I mean you're
- 4:18Speaker 2: mostly at looking at clips of defensive breakdowns and how
- 4:21Speaker 2: they're guarding certain things and not necessarily rehashing you know,
- 4:26Speaker 2: controversial play.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Calls, reviews or you know, obviously every sport now at baseball, basketball, football.
- 4:34Speaker 1: I mean, Yukon was down playing in Birmingham over the weekend.
- 4:38Speaker 1: There were several replays that affected the final outcome of
- 4:43Speaker 1: that game, and you con fortunately was on the right
- 4:45Speaker 1: side of a couple of them. I mean, I think
- 4:48Speaker 1: replays here to stay right. There's no way you can say, well,
- 4:51Speaker 1: we can't have it anymore.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you need them for certain certain things.
- 4:59Speaker 2: The athlete have gotten so much, you know, bigger and
- 5:03Speaker 2: faster and more athletic, and uh yeah, I mean you
- 5:07Speaker 2: you do. Referees are going to miss things. And if
- 5:09Speaker 2: there's things that you know that that could be saved
- 5:14Speaker 2: in terms of an injustice happening, Uh, with a call
- 5:18Speaker 2: that could cost someone a game that could be fixed
- 5:21Speaker 2: with a with a replay in the last minute, Uh
- 5:25Speaker 2: why not?
- 5:26Speaker 1: Yeah, And there's some sometimes in hoop it seems to
- 5:28Speaker 1: me you get these excuse me, flagrants that you have
- 5:32Speaker 1: to kind of look at it, I guess second time
- 5:34Speaker 1: to see if it was intentional or Those are the
- 5:37Speaker 1: kind I think the replay really helps you figure things out.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, the the flagrance and and yeah, I
- 5:48Speaker 2: guess the goaltending and and uh, you know, things that
- 5:51Speaker 2: involve time, you know, and and uh, intentional fouls and
- 5:56Speaker 2: and and things of that nature.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Coach, early in the season, I know you play a
- 6:03Speaker 1: lot of non conference games. Everyone does, but they're not
- 6:07Speaker 1: always laughers. I mean, Colombia went into Villanova and won
- 6:11Speaker 1: a game by ten Fordham knocked off Seaton Hall on
- 6:14Speaker 1: campus there by one I mean it just goes to show, right,
- 6:18Speaker 1: I mean you you will say things like you got
- 6:20Speaker 1: to respect your opponents and every game matters to us,
- 6:24Speaker 1: all that, all that stuff. So it's not all rhetoric,
- 6:27Speaker 1: is it, Because sometimes these teams come in and they
- 6:31Speaker 1: find ways and that can really be an upsetting thing
- 6:35Speaker 1: to a rank team certainly.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Yeah, it's you know, teams, really you can remake your
- 6:42Speaker 2: team with old players, and low majors and mid majors
- 6:47Speaker 2: can oftentimes now are having players that played at the
- 6:52Speaker 2: high major level, got recruited at the high major level,
- 6:55Speaker 2: maybe didn't play at a higher level, but have the
- 6:58Speaker 2: talent and then didn't get on the court, so then
- 7:01Speaker 2: they transferred down or in some cases, like you know,
- 7:05Speaker 2: really good players are going in the nil era in
- 7:09Speaker 2: the portal era here. You know, really good players are
- 7:13Speaker 2: actually starting their careers at lower levels so that they
- 7:17Speaker 2: can play well and then hit the transfer portal where
- 7:19Speaker 2: they're nil number. Uh yeah, yeah, So you know it's uh,
- 7:26Speaker 2: you know, you could have a really old teams as
- 7:29Speaker 2: a low division one or a mid division one. Uh,
- 7:32Speaker 2: you can have a really old talented team and uh,
- 7:35Speaker 2: you know, these games are they're not they're not easy,
- 7:38Speaker 2: not for us.
- 7:40Speaker 1: No, it's like the wild wild West out there, really is.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Dan Hurley's with us. We'll be back and take a
- 7:45Speaker 1: quick time out. This is the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches
- 7:48Speaker 1: Show on lear Field.
