Transcript
- Lucas: Luna, welcome back to Learn German with Fexingo. Ready for something sweet? Luna: Oh, I love the sound of that. Are we going back to the bakery? Lucas: We are! But this time, we're ordering cake. Imagine a cozy German bakery with a display case full of cakes. Luna: Yeah, I can almost smell it. Okay, what's the first thing I'd say? Lucas: You walk up and say: Ich hätte gern ein Stück Kuchen. That means 'I would like a piece of cake.' Let's break it down. Ich hätte gern — I would like. Ein Stück — a piece. Kuchen — cake. Luna: Ich hätte gern ein Stück Kuchen. Hmm, that's a mouthful. Ich hätte gern... ein Stück Kuchen. Lucas: Exactly! And the nice thing is, you can use that pattern for anything. Ich hätte gern ein Stück Kuchen. Luna: Ich hätte gern ein Stück Kuchen. Okay, I think I've got it. But what if they have different kinds of cake? Lucas: Great question! Then you ask: Was für Kuchen haben Sie? — 'What cakes do you have?' Was für — 'what kind of.' Kuchen — cake. Haben Sie — 'do you have.' Luna: Was für Kuchen haben Sie? That rolls off the tongue pretty nicely. Lucas: It does. And the baker might answer: Wir haben Apfelkuchen, Schokoladenkuchen, Käsekuchen... So you pick one. Luna: Okay, so I'd say: Ich nehme den Apfelkuchen. — 'I'll take the apple cake.' Right? Lucas: Perfect! Ich nehme den Apfelkuchen. Yes, den because Apfelkuchen is masculine. You nailed it. Luna: Ich nehme den Apfelkuchen. And then maybe I want it to go? Zum Mitnehmen, bitte? Lucas: Exactly! Zum Mitnehmen means 'to take away.' So you'd say: Zum Mitnehmen, bitte. Or if you're eating there, you say: Zum Hieressen. Luna: Zum Mitnehmen, bitte. That's easy. So the whole exchange: Ich hätte gern ein Stück Kuchen. Was für Kuchen haben Sie? Ich nehme den Apfelkuchen. Zum Mitnehmen, bitte. Lucas: You've got it! And then when you taste it, you can say: Das schmeckt lecker. — 'That tastes delicious.' Das schmeckt lecker. Luna: Das schmeckt lecker. I hope so! Let me try the whole thing again. Ich hätte gern ein Stück Kuchen. Lucas: Yes! Luna: Was für Kuchen haben Sie? Lucas: Yes! Luna: Ich nehme den Apfelkuchen. Lucas: Yes! Luna: Zum Mitnehmen, bitte. Lucas: And then? Luna: Das schmeckt lecker! Lucas: You're ready to order cake in German. Lucas: Was für Kuchen haben Sie? Luna: Right. And if you want the chocolate cake? Lucas: Ich nehme den Schokoladenkuchen. Luna: Ich nehme den Schokoladenkuchen. Okay, I think I need to hear that one more time. Lucas: Ich nehme den Schokoladenkuchen. But remember, the key phrase is Ich hätte gern ein Stück Kuchen. Use that anywhere. Luna: Ich hätte gern ein Stück Kuchen. I love it. So next time I'm in Germany, I'm heading straight to a bakery. Lucas: And you'll be ready. Until next time, keep practicing. Tschüss! Luna: Tschüss!
