- 0:07Speaker 1: This mediated podcast. Welcome to me EATR Trivia, the only
- 0:12Speaker 1: game show where conservation always wins. I'm your host, Spencer
- 0:15Speaker 1: new Art, and today we're joined by Janice Ptelis, Ryan Callahan,
- 0:19Speaker 1: Brody Henderson, Corey Caulkins, Trusted Croaker, Logan Dove, and Sean
- 0:23Speaker 1: Weaver now Trusted. This is your first time on the podcast,
- 0:26Speaker 1: So tell folks what you do here at meat Eater,
- 0:30Speaker 1: where many hats across our digital product ak the website
- 0:33Speaker 1: and platforms. So, um, I guess my favorite part that
- 0:37Speaker 1: I do is anything dev related, So coding promo pages
- 0:41Speaker 1: or do anything development related. And you left out that
- 0:44Speaker 1: you're one of our fishiest people in the office, so
- 0:47Speaker 1: much so that your dog's name is Tippet it is.
- 0:50Speaker 1: You also drive the pickup in the parking lot that
- 0:52Speaker 1: says five X on the license plate. I do, yeah, man,
- 0:55Speaker 1: anything related to fishing. Been on any adventures lately? I
- 0:59Speaker 1: just got back from a five day trip in Montana
- 1:01Speaker 1: and Idaho where we basically just chased trichos around both
- 1:06Speaker 1: states and it was a lot harder than I thought
- 1:09Speaker 1: it was going to be. I edited a few and
- 1:12Speaker 1: lost a few. Anybody else in this room get experienced
- 1:14Speaker 1: chasing those. Do you know what a tricho is? An
- 1:18Speaker 1: take your guess. We should use that for a question.
- 1:21Speaker 1: What is it? Tricho is a very small aquatic insect
- 1:27Speaker 1: is a black mai, So you gotta catch fish on
- 1:32Speaker 1: like sizeks. That was your first time doing it? I
- 1:38Speaker 1: did it once last year, but this is my first
- 1:40Speaker 1: time dedicating more than one day to it. Did you
- 1:43Speaker 1: break down and just put a giant hopper on? At
- 1:46Speaker 1: some point? Hoppers in the afternoon, for sure, So I
- 1:48Speaker 1: woke up for sundrise. And now if you're not familiar,
- 1:54Speaker 1: this is a ten round quiz show with questions from
- 1:56Speaker 1: meat eaters four verticals which are hunting, fishing, concertation, and cooking,
- 2:00Speaker 1: and there's a prize. Meat eater will donate five hundred
- 2:03Speaker 1: dollars to the conservation organization of the winners choosing. And
- 2:07Speaker 1: each week here on Meat eat to Trivia, we reveal
- 2:09Speaker 1: a new stat This week we're looking at player performance
- 2:13Speaker 1: in the conservation category, which is our biggest and broadest topic.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Brody is our best performer. They're getting fifty eight percent
- 2:21Speaker 1: of conservation questions correct. That's followed by Steve with col
- 2:26Speaker 1: With and Nice with They are the only players that
- 2:31Speaker 1: get over half of their conservation questions right, and amazingly,
- 2:35Speaker 1: they're all within four percentage points of each other. It's
- 2:40Speaker 1: kind of like we hang out together, and this is
- 2:43Speaker 1: a big sample size. This is like over a hundred
- 2:45Speaker 1: questions that have gone into this. So I think cow
- 2:48Speaker 1: would like to see that percentage a lot higher than
- 2:50Speaker 1: it is. Oh, I don't think anybody here has done
- 2:54Speaker 1: growing that's right now. In the previous game of trivia,
- 2:59Speaker 1: I brought up how I'm uninspired by the progress of
- 3:02Speaker 1: Crazy Horse, a mountain monument under construction in the Black
- 3:06Speaker 1: Hills National Forest. Stephen Brodie were dismissive of me being dismissive,
- 3:11Speaker 1: so I wanted to use this chance to give everyone
- 3:13Speaker 1: a Crazy Horse update. The Crazy Horse Memorial has been
- 3:17Speaker 1: in progress since nineteen forty eight, even though the man
- 3:20Speaker 1: who designed it estimated it would be done in thirty years.
- 3:24Speaker 1: For comparison, Mount Rushmore, which sits seventeen miles away, took
- 3:28Speaker 1: fourteen years to create from start to finish, So what's
- 3:31Speaker 1: taking so long? Well, unlike Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse is
- 3:35Speaker 1: on private land and use its private funding, and they'd
- 3:38Speaker 1: like to keep it that way. Despite multiple offers from
- 3:41Speaker 1: the government to help. And here's why I'm a skeptic
- 3:43Speaker 1: of the whole project. Crazy Horse was originally meant to
- 3:46Speaker 1: be a dedication to Native American tribes and honor the
- 3:50Speaker 1: hardships they've endured, but as Business Insider reported in eighteen,
- 3:55Speaker 1: the family who owned it makes nearly thirteen million dollars
- 3:58Speaker 1: a year off of tourists, with little progress actually being
- 4:01Speaker 1: made on the mountain. Jim Bradford, a Native American state senator,
- 4:05Speaker 1: told the publication, quote, all of a sudden, one non
- 4:09Speaker 1: Indian family has become millionaires off our people. So if
- 4:12Speaker 1: Crazy Horse has ever completed and really becomes the world
- 4:16Speaker 1: second tallest statue, I'll give it the credit it deserves.
- 4:19Speaker 1: But until then, consider me a crazy Horse cynic. So
- 4:23Speaker 1: there you go, Bro, Do you feel any different about
- 4:25Speaker 1: Crazy Horse now? M m, not really something? It looks cool.
- 4:32Speaker 1: It does look cool. I'll give you that. It's something
- 4:34Speaker 1: I'd like my kids to see. Yeah, maybe their grandchildren
- 4:38Speaker 1: will see and you can tell them the whole story
- 4:40Speaker 1: about capitalism, sure, or I could tell him the story
- 4:45Speaker 1: about Crazy Horse. There you go. You should tell them
- 4:48Speaker 1: both how far away from completion are they? Oh? Not?
- 4:52Speaker 1: Not even close. They have his face done. Um, and
- 4:54Speaker 1: when it's done, I think it will be they said
- 4:56Speaker 1: the second tallest statue in the world, only beat by
- 5:00Speaker 1: one in India. I believe right now they just have
- 5:03Speaker 1: his face. I think they hope in the next fifteen
- 5:05Speaker 1: years to have like his hair done and maybe his
- 5:08Speaker 1: arm that's pointing. Um. But I don't know about so
- 5:12Speaker 1: a privately funded project is taken longer than the government
- 5:15Speaker 1: funded project it is. I'm not saying this is a situation.
- 5:18Speaker 1: We're like, hey, we're the government, We're here to help. Um.
- 5:21Speaker 1: But I imagine this would be a different conversation if
- 5:25Speaker 1: this wasn't a family who was like kind of raking
- 5:27Speaker 1: it in um and not really going anywhere. Million bucks
- 5:32Speaker 1: a year. I'm sure they're like, yeah, sticks and stones,
- 5:35Speaker 1: sticks and stones. Now, the Shelby index for this round
- 5:39Speaker 1: is three, so our winner should get about six. Right.
- 5:42Speaker 1: It is a difficult batch of questions. And with that
- 5:45Speaker 1: we're on the Meatiator Trivia play the drop fill. Look,
- 5:49Speaker 1: I need to know what I stand to win everything.
- 5:54Speaker 1: I'm saying, just tend to win everything, sus. Question one,
- 6:07Speaker 1: the topic is hunting real quick. Do you think we
- 6:11Speaker 1: could have that cute little girl also record her saying
- 6:16Speaker 1: we Phil could record her saying suck it, browdie. At
- 6:22Speaker 1: some point, she's probably come close to saying that before. Yeah,
- 6:29Speaker 1: just keep a microphone around her long enough, it'll happen.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Question one. The topic is hunting, and as always, this
- 6:35Speaker 1: will be multiple choice. Who said this quote? If some
- 6:41Speaker 1: animals are good at hunting and other animals are suitable
- 6:44Speaker 1: for hunting, then the gods must clearly smile on hunting.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Is it Stephen Hawking, Fred Bear, Aristotle or Ted Nugent?
- 6:54Speaker 1: Here's the quote again. If some animals are good at
- 6:58Speaker 1: hunting and other animals are suitable for hunting, then the
- 7:01Speaker 1: gods must clearly smile on hunting. Is it Stephen Hawking,
- 7:05Speaker 1: Fred Bear, Aristotle or Ted Nugent? Yanni, you got a
- 7:11Speaker 1: grin on your face? What's going on over there? I
- 7:14Speaker 1: have no clue with the animal. If some animals are
- 7:18Speaker 1: good at hunting and other animals are suitable for hunting,
- 7:21Speaker 1: then the gods must clearly smile on hunting. Does everybody
- 7:24Speaker 1: have an answer? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We
- 7:28Speaker 1: have Corey saying Fred Bear, Logan sang Ted Nugent Brodie
- 7:33Speaker 1: sang nugent, Sean saying Aristotle, cal saying Aristotle, jan Is
- 7:37Speaker 1: saying the nude, and Tressa saying ted nugent. The correct
- 7:41Speaker 1: answer is Aristotle. The gods part threw me off. I
- 7:47Speaker 1: was like, yeah, yeah, is kind of religious. I don't now,
- 7:52Speaker 1: I think not. Although Ariston Bottle is most famous for
- 8:01Speaker 1: his work in philosophy, he was also considered one of
- 8:04Speaker 1: the fathers of biology and zoology. His greatest contribution to
- 8:08Speaker 1: conservation was being the first person to attempt to classify
- 8:11Speaker 1: animals into groups according to behavior and physiologies. We've come
- 8:18Speaker 1: back from Aristotle supports hunting. That's good enough for me.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Question to the topic is cooking. What state produces of
- 8:32Speaker 1: America's farmed and wild caught crayfish? What state produces nine
- 8:41Speaker 1: of America's farmed and wild caught crayfish? Cal? What gave
- 8:46Speaker 1: it away to you on that last one that it
- 8:48Speaker 1: was Aristotle? Just just the structure of the quote felt old.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Not necessarily old, I guess, but it just seemed familiar
- 9:02Speaker 1: in that way. I guess I categorized it and placed
- 9:06Speaker 1: it into a group. It wasn't the Stephen Hawking and
- 9:12Speaker 1: does everybody have an answer for which state produces nine
- 9:15Speaker 1: of America's farmed and wild caught crayfish. Go ahead and
- 9:20Speaker 1: reveal your answers. We have Corey saying Louisiana, Logan saying Alabama.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Brody not showing me his answers, says Louisiana. Shawn saying Louisiana, Louisiana, Louisiana, Louisiana.
- 9:31Speaker 1: They got it. The correct answer is Louisiana. Crayfisher also
- 9:36Speaker 1: commercially harvested in Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, and the Carolinas,
- 9:42Speaker 1: but none of them holding candle to Louisiana. It's estimated
- 9:45Speaker 1: that the crayfish industry in the Bayou state employees about
- 9:49Speaker 1: seven thousand people and injects three d million dollars into
- 9:52Speaker 1: the state's economy. Seven thousand, seven thousand people. A lot.
- 9:57Speaker 1: That's where it's all coming from, a lot of people.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Question three, the topic is conservation. This is our listener
- 10:03Speaker 1: question of the Week, which was won by Brad Rice
- 10:06Speaker 1: for sending this great question. Brad is going to get
- 10:09Speaker 1: a Cow's Weekend Review hat signed by cal If you
- 10:12Speaker 1: want a chance to win our listened question of the week,
- 10:14Speaker 1: then Send your question to Trivia at the meat eater
- 10:17Speaker 1: dot com. America's thirty third president, who was in office
- 10:22Speaker 1: from nineteen forty five to nineteen fifty three, is credited
- 10:26Speaker 1: for creating the Bureau of Land Management? Who was that president?
- 10:33Speaker 1: America's thirty third president, who was in office from nineteen
- 10:38Speaker 1: forty five to nineteen fifty three, is credited for creating
- 10:42Speaker 1: the Bureau of Land Management? Who was that president? I
- 10:47Speaker 1: really like these pens, by the way, Yeah, new and
- 10:49Speaker 1: improoved pens is the conservation Questions and two term or
- 10:55Speaker 1: and the listener is getting a Cow's Weeken review signed
- 10:58Speaker 1: hat Cow. Do you know this one? It's super easy
- 11:01Speaker 1: as long as you memorize all of our presidents and
- 11:02Speaker 1: know where they're rank. You know. Does everybody have an answer? No?
- 11:08Speaker 1: Do you have one yet? Logan? I wrote one down,
- 11:10Speaker 1: but I'm very not confident on just coming up with
- 11:15Speaker 1: something right now. I put down the only president I
- 11:17Speaker 1: could think of that anything to do with conservation, So
- 11:20Speaker 1: hopefully it's that heavy hint there by Logan, Y, you
- 11:26Speaker 1: got an answer, go ahead and reveal your answers. We
- 11:28Speaker 1: have Corey saying eisenhowerd Logan saying Roosevelt Brodie saying Hoover,
- 11:34Speaker 1: Sean saying Truman, Cal saying Truman, Janice saying Garfield, and
- 11:38Speaker 1: Tress is saying Bush. The correct answer is Truman. Well done,
- 11:44Speaker 1: Cal and Sean was a tough one. Thanks for the dates.
- 11:49Speaker 1: The Truman administration created the Bureau of Land Management in
- 11:53Speaker 1: nineteen six while going through an agency reorganization, he combined
- 11:58Speaker 1: the General Land Office US Grazing Service to make what
- 12:02Speaker 1: we now know as the BLM. How confident were you
- 12:06Speaker 1: on that one, Sean and Cal? Did you like know
- 12:08Speaker 1: it know it? Wow? Because you knew the thirty third
- 12:12Speaker 1: president YEA for the years. Question for the topic is biology.
- 12:21Speaker 1: What Southeast Asia country is home to the Komodo dragon?
- 12:28Speaker 1: What Southeast Asia country is home to the Komodo dragon?
- 12:35Speaker 1: Quick answers again, Sean at Cal, you boys know this one. Yeah, Yeah,
- 12:41Speaker 1: I'm sticking with my answer to I'm second guessing myself.
- 12:44Speaker 1: But it turns out there's a lot of Southeast Asian countries. Punch.
- 12:50Speaker 1: I can't phone a friend or anything now now I
- 12:54Speaker 1: keep that computer closed. Now, I'm totally second guessing myself.
- 12:58Speaker 1: What Southeast Asia tree is home to Komodo dragons? Does
- 13:05Speaker 1: everybody have an answer? I do, dress so you're gonna
- 13:08Speaker 1: create one. Just take a just any Asian country you
- 13:13Speaker 1: can think of. Yeah, I believe Mongolia as a Asian country.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Russia to give it a shot. Go ahead and reveal
- 13:29Speaker 1: your answers. We have Corey saying Philippines, Logan saying Thailand,
- 13:33Speaker 1: Brody saying Philippines, Sean saying Indonesia, cal saying Japan, Jana
- 13:38Speaker 1: saying Japan, and Tresses saying Mongolia. We do have a
- 13:42Speaker 1: correct answer in the room. It's Indonesia. See. Biologists used
- 13:49Speaker 1: to think that komodo dragons are a modern species that
- 13:52Speaker 1: evolved from monitor lizards so that they could eat pygmy elephants,
- 13:56Speaker 1: but more recent fossil discoveries indicate that komodo have actually
- 14:00Speaker 1: been around for about four million years, and that they
- 14:03Speaker 1: did a lot of island hopping between Australia and Asia. Today,
- 14:06Speaker 1: they're only found in Indonesia, where it's speculated that they
- 14:10Speaker 1: arrived about nine hundred thousand years ago. Cool question five.
- 14:15Speaker 1: The topic is woodsmanship. This next great question comes to
- 14:19Speaker 1: us via Josh ring Smooth. If you have a question
- 14:22Speaker 1: you think is right for meat eat to trivia you
- 14:24Speaker 1: can send it to Trivia at the meat eator dot com.
- 14:27Speaker 1: What is the phenomenon related to hypothermia victims in which
- 14:31Speaker 1: bodies are found either partially or completely undressed? Oh? Can
- 14:38Speaker 1: you repeat that question? What is the phenomenon related to
- 14:41Speaker 1: hypothermia victims in which bodies are found either partially or
- 14:45Speaker 1: completely undressed? This is question five. So we'll get a
- 14:49Speaker 1: scoreboard update from Phil after this. I have a hard
- 14:54Speaker 1: time understanding the question, what is the phenomenon related to
- 14:58Speaker 1: hypothermia victims in which bodies are found either partially or
- 15:03Speaker 1: completely undressed? Brody? You know this one. I do, but
- 15:08Speaker 1: it's not coming to me. Can we explain the phenomenon?
- 15:11Speaker 1: Or you need to know the names? Got a name?
- 15:14Speaker 1: Got a Name's got a name? Does anybody know this? Mhm?
- 15:21Speaker 1: Brody's breaking down. The hem oculus is working hard for Brody.
- 15:28Speaker 1: I've never seen him this stressed hat, pulled down, slumped
- 15:33Speaker 1: over in his chair. Steve has talked about this many
- 15:39Speaker 1: times before. It's in our wilderness skills and surviving now. Yeah,
- 15:45Speaker 1: so it's like very embarrassing that I can't think, I mean,
- 15:49Speaker 1: very familiar. But I had no idea that that got
- 15:53Speaker 1: a name has a name? Does everybody have an answer?
- 15:56Speaker 1: Who's going to come up with one? Go ahead and
- 15:59Speaker 1: reveal your answer is. We have Corey saying tripping Logan
- 16:03Speaker 1: without an answer, shown without an answer, cal saying hysteria,
- 16:08Speaker 1: Janice saying hyper hot. Press that without an answer. Nobody
- 16:13Speaker 1: got it. The correct answer is paradoxical undressings. This happens
- 16:20Speaker 1: when people with prolonged exposure to freezing conditions start to hallucinate.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Rather than feeling extremely cold, they start to feel warm
- 16:28Speaker 1: and take off their clothes. They actually feel hyper hot.
- 16:31Speaker 1: Studies have shown that between twenty and fifty of hypothermia
- 16:36Speaker 1: cases have pterodoxical undressing. That's just something that people came
- 16:41Speaker 1: up with because they're forced to be in a room
- 16:43Speaker 1: for too long together. Like we got a name, it's
- 16:48Speaker 1: a good name like that. Yeah, I think Corey's answer
- 16:51Speaker 1: was Actually probably the closest is tripping Judges doesn't give
- 16:56Speaker 1: the scoreboard up date. We are halfway through the game
- 16:58Speaker 1: of trivia. Sure thing, Logan dove has he got to
- 17:03Speaker 1: get himself on the board. That's fine though, it's got
- 17:05Speaker 1: a great spirit. We've got Brody, Corey, Janice and Tressa
- 17:10Speaker 1: all with one point apiece. Ryan Callahan has three points
- 17:14Speaker 1: and Sean Weavers in first place with four points. Separating
- 17:19Speaker 1: yourself from the room. Here another blowout, halftime blowout. I'm
- 17:25Speaker 1: not confident though. Question six, the topic is gear. What
- 17:40Speaker 1: outdoor gear company was started in Maine by Leon Leon
- 17:44Speaker 1: Wood in nineteen eleven? What outdoor gear company was started
- 17:51Speaker 1: in Maine by Leon Leon Wood in nineteen eleven? Brody
- 17:55Speaker 1: is just so kind of question, it appears, is not
- 18:00Speaker 1: many other folks know it? What outdoor gear company was
- 18:06Speaker 1: started in Maine by Leon Leon Wood in nineteen eleven.
- 18:10Speaker 1: You don't like this one at all? I hate it
- 18:13Speaker 1: this question. Does everybody have an answer? I like it
- 18:16Speaker 1: because I got it right. Well, go ahead and reveal
- 18:19Speaker 1: your answers. We have Corey saying outdoor research logan saying
- 18:23Speaker 1: G five, Brody sang LLL being LLL being LLL being
- 18:27Speaker 1: LLL being LLL being they got it. You know I
- 18:30Speaker 1: gave it away from me? Was it was? That was
- 18:38Speaker 1: the year I had nothing to do with Leon Leon
- 18:42Speaker 1: Leon sold his first one hundred pairs of boots by
- 18:45Speaker 1: obtaining a list of main hunting license holders and sending
- 18:49Speaker 1: them flyers. He promised that if they weren't satisfied with
- 18:52Speaker 1: the boots purchased from him, he'd give them their money back.
- 18:55Speaker 1: This resulted in him refunding of his customers when the
- 18:58Speaker 1: rubber boots developed tracks, but he overcame that initial hiccup
- 19:02Speaker 1: and went on to create one of the biggest outdoor
- 19:04Speaker 1: retail companies in the world. What's it called Leon Leon
- 19:10Speaker 1: Wood Bean? Question seven? The topic is haunting. This next
- 19:16Speaker 1: great question comes to us via John Ryan. If you
- 19:19Speaker 1: have a question you think is right for meat Eater Trivia,
- 19:21Speaker 1: you can send it to trivia at the meat eater
- 19:23Speaker 1: dot com. Wasn't he just in a TV show? Yeah?
- 19:26Speaker 1: I was gonna say, is that hunt for at October?
- 19:30Speaker 1: John Ryan? Don't know this question? Oh Jack Ryan? What
- 19:36Speaker 1: are the two continents that don't have dear native to them?
- 19:42Speaker 1: What are the two continents that don't have dear native
- 19:45Speaker 1: to them? Both of them? Or you got a list
- 19:50Speaker 1: both of the continents looking for the two continents without
- 19:55Speaker 1: native deer? Does everybody have an answer? Go ahead and
- 20:01Speaker 1: reveal your answers. We have Corey saying Antarctica and South America.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Logan came up with Antarctica. Couldn't think of a second continent,
- 20:10Speaker 1: Brody saying Antarctica and Australia, Sean saying the same thing,
- 20:14Speaker 1: Cal saying Antarctica and Hawaii. Janice saying Australia and Antarctica.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Trust that doesn't have an answer. The two continents are
- 20:23Speaker 1: Australia and Antarctica Australia, Cale, tell me about that Hawaii answer.
- 20:28Speaker 1: I don't know. I just stuck in my head. I
- 20:31Speaker 1: don't know. But that's not a continent. What do we
- 20:36Speaker 1: agree that's not a continent? Ye's all right. Despite not
- 20:40Speaker 1: having any native deer, Australia does have six introduced species.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Those deer are fallow deer, red deer, sambar deer, rusa deer,
- 20:48Speaker 1: hog deer, and access Dear. Question eight, the topic is biology.
- 20:55Speaker 1: What is the formal name for a scientist who works
- 20:59Speaker 1: with insects? What is the formal name for a scientist
- 21:06Speaker 1: who works with insects? It's very confident answers so far. Logan,
- 21:14Speaker 1: how you feel about this one? I'm thinking about adding
- 21:17Speaker 1: an ologist to the end of something. I'm not gonna
- 21:20Speaker 1: tell you what. Okay, yeah, I need you know this one?
- 21:24Speaker 1: I think so okay, Sean, who I think is our
- 21:27Speaker 1: leader appears as though you know this one too. I'm
- 21:30Speaker 1: going with my gut. Now I'm second guesting myself, but
- 21:33Speaker 1: I think I know it. This is question eight. Will
- 21:37Speaker 1: get a scoreboard update after this. It just allows my brain.
- 21:42Speaker 1: I can't think pass that last question. This is like
- 21:46Speaker 1: something I squarely no, and I just it's I'm gerna blink.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Does everybody have an answer? It's not bug? Dr kel
- 21:56Speaker 1: not on this con what is the formal name for
- 22:01Speaker 1: a scientist who works withinsects? Cal just go go ahead
- 22:08Speaker 1: and reveal your answers. Corey is saying epologist. Logan saying insectologists,
- 22:14Speaker 1: Brody saying entomologists, Sean saying anentomologist. Count without an answer,
- 22:18Speaker 1: Janice saying entomologist in tressa without an answer. The correct
- 22:22Speaker 1: answer is entomologist. I knew it started with a knee.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Since since two thirds of the world species are insects,
- 22:31Speaker 1: this is one of the largest forms of zoology on
- 22:34Speaker 1: the planet. There are nearly one point three million known
