- 0:40Speaker 1: All right, it looks like we've got to clouds increasing
- 1:56Speaker 1: today and daytime highs around twenty eight.
- 2:00Speaker 2: We're at thirteen right now, so we've got a little
- 2:02Speaker 2: ways to go. But tonight, more clouds, we'll get down
- 2:07Speaker 2: about thirteen degrees. Maybe some weather that is coming into
- 2:11Speaker 2: the picture, and especially tomorrow, we've got some snow on
- 2:17Speaker 2: the way and all kinds of winter warnings and all
- 2:21Speaker 2: that fun for snow and sleet and freezing rain and
- 2:27Speaker 2: all that fun here setting us up for a weekend,
- 2:31Speaker 2: a Valentine's Day weekend that is going to be just
- 2:37Speaker 2: very snowy, especially on Sunday. I've heard everything from an
- 2:42Speaker 2: inch of snow on Sunday to fifteen feet and everything
- 2:46Speaker 2: in between. So I would just say that we're going
- 2:49Speaker 2: to get some snow this weekend, So keep that in mind,
- 2:52Speaker 2: especially as you have travel plans. Hey birthdays today on
- 2:57Speaker 2: this day, number twelve of the month, Joe Beauregard, Jen
- 3:02Speaker 2: Lawrence on the birthday list today. Happy birthday, jen Ellen Poohlin,
- 3:07Speaker 2: Shane Roya, Nathan Carter, Anita, and we have Crystal Stridesburg
- 3:15Speaker 2: on the birthday list today. Bianca Chappelle and Melissa Tesa
- 3:21Speaker 2: happy birthday. Everybody reached out just a few minutes ago
- 3:27Speaker 2: to Dave Rule of the Berrytown thunder Chickens to see
- 3:31Speaker 2: if he had time this morning to hop on the
- 3:34Speaker 2: air with us, and he unfortunately does not. He is
- 3:38Speaker 2: diving headfirst into a meeting that started about four minutes ago.
- 3:43Speaker 2: But Dave's do I say, cohort Linda? I mean the
- 3:48Speaker 2: two of you have worked together now on the Travis
- 3:53Speaker 2: Mercy Memorial Skatepark fundraiser for how many years?
- 3:56Speaker 3: Oh?
- 3:56Speaker 4: My goodness.
- 3:57Speaker 3: First of all, thank you JD for letting me be
- 3:59Speaker 3: here this morning to talk about the skate park. Dave
- 4:03Speaker 3: and I have known each other for over twenty five years.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Wow.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Yeah, off and on on the recreation board and for
- 4:11Speaker 3: the skate park.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:13Speaker 4: Wow.
- 4:14Speaker 2: He has been. Just to throw some love at him here.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Dave and the thunder Chickens have been more than instrumental
- 4:25Speaker 2: with this event. They're kind of the backbone of it.
- 4:28Speaker 3: They are they are they've taken hold of it since
- 4:31Speaker 3: day one. Yeah, and every year reach out to have
- 4:35Speaker 3: this fundraiser so much appreciated by that whole group.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's not only it's not only a lot
- 4:43Speaker 2: of fun, but it is. It's also a really really
- 4:48Speaker 2: important event brings it brings us together as one big Yes,
- 4:54Speaker 2: snow machining family, it is.
- 4:56Speaker 3: And it is snow machine family put on by the
- 4:59Speaker 3: vast Yeah. But open to everyone because the users of
- 5:04Speaker 3: the park are from all ages from three and four
- 5:08Speaker 3: years old up to our age JD.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Yeah. Right, And it's open to.
- 5:14Speaker 3: The park so that we can keep on doing the
- 5:17Speaker 3: upkeep to the park.
- 5:18Speaker 2: All right, we're talking about a skate park right here
- 5:22Speaker 2: in Bury, right up by Barrytown School that was constructed
- 5:28Speaker 2: in two thousand. Am I right?
- 5:29Speaker 4: That is correct?
- 5:30Speaker 2: Okay, So the skate park was built in memory of
- 5:36Speaker 2: your son, correct, who died with one other young lady
- 5:42Speaker 2: in a horrible car accident in ninety nine, correct, February twenty.
- 5:46Speaker 4: Third, Correct, of ninety nine.
- 5:49Speaker 2: And there were seven kids total, but two passed and
- 5:54Speaker 2: your son was one of them.
- 5:55Speaker 4: Yes, that's correct, and.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Heather Brummert who also passed away.
- 5:59Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Both kids were what just fifteen fifteen years old?
- 6:04Speaker 4: Yeah, yep.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Wow. So this skate park was made, yes, And so
- 6:15Speaker 2: far over the last twenty five years it has been
- 6:19Speaker 2: built up and built up, and it has grown and grown.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Yes, so Travis liked he loved to skateboard, skateboard, roller blade, snowboard,
- 6:28Speaker 3: you name it. Okay, Yeah, and the kids in Eastbury
- 6:31Speaker 3: that you know he was from Eastbury, I'm from Eastbury,
- 6:34Speaker 3: and the kids had no real place to skateboard. I mean,
- 6:38Speaker 3: the Berrytown police are great to the kids, but they
- 6:41Speaker 3: were always pushing them out of the fire station or
- 6:44Speaker 3: so when he passed, good friends of mine actually had
- 6:48Speaker 3: the idea of let's let's do something with instead of
- 6:52Speaker 3: sending flowers or food to Linda, let's do something something
- 6:57Speaker 3: that's last, something is lasting.
- 6:59Speaker 4: And this is what we have done.
- 7:01Speaker 2: And look at this twenty five years later. Yeah, this
- 7:04Speaker 2: has become a staple event in our community.
- 7:08Speaker 3: It has, and that it used to be where the
- 7:11Speaker 3: skatepark is now it's eighteen thousand square foot skate park.
- 7:14Speaker 4: It used to be all woods woods.
- 7:17Speaker 3: And that that skate park was erected by mostly in
- 7:22Speaker 3: kind services from businesses and contractors in our area. So
- 7:28Speaker 3: there's a lot of love, sweat, tears that went into
- 7:31Speaker 3: that park that we want to keep it up for
- 7:33Speaker 3: the future kids.
- 7:36Speaker 2: So here we are, we've got some pretty good weather
- 7:39Speaker 2: that's coming in.
- 7:40Speaker 4: Well, it's great.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Great, you're one of these people that just loves the snow,
- 7:45Speaker 2: and certainly, I mean, this is the timing for this
- 7:49Speaker 2: is perfect.
- 7:50Speaker 3: We haven't had snow for this event for a number
- 7:53Speaker 3: of years, and this year we've got the snow.
- 7:57Speaker 4: So I am excited, very excited.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, and those years where there hasn't been snow,
- 8:05Speaker 2: this event has.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Never never fall, never never been canceled, always ever, always happened.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Whether snowmobiles are involved.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Ride in, walk in, drive in, yeah.
- 8:16Speaker 2: Take horse, horse and buggy whatever, whatever, yeah, snowshoe whatever,
- 8:21Speaker 2: cross country ski.
- 8:22Speaker 4: Parachute if you want to. Yes.
- 8:26Speaker 2: So the skate park fundraiser is happening on the twenty second,
- 8:30Speaker 2: that's a week from the Saturday, correct, Okay, at the
- 8:34Speaker 2: Berrytown School.
- 8:35Speaker 4: It starts out for the poker run.
- 8:38Speaker 3: The poker run starts at the Great Energy Store in Southbury,
- 8:41Speaker 3: right eight point fifteen. I'll be there to sign people up. Okay,
- 8:45Speaker 3: you're on the road on the trails at nine o'clock, all.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Right, so you got forty five minutes.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Ye.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Get it together, folks. I mean some of these snow machiners, Linda,
- 8:54Speaker 2: you know, I mean they're waking up too late and
- 8:56Speaker 2: Saturday morning, they're coming in on coffee and you know,
- 9:01Speaker 2: get it together, get there at eight fifteen, get their
- 9:04Speaker 2: registration done. Okay, get your coffee, get your breakfast sandwich,
- 9:08Speaker 2: and let's get the show in the road at nine o'clock.
- 9:11Speaker 3: That's great, don't be great blocking, that's right, that's right,
- 9:14Speaker 3: But they're not.
- 9:15Speaker 4: They're usually ready to go.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, and then we're gonna we're gonna ride
- 9:21Speaker 2: for what's what's the the course? Do we know?
- 9:24Speaker 3: No, it's I don't. I'll know that morning more. But
- 9:28Speaker 3: they all end up at Barrytown School. Okay, that's the
- 9:31Speaker 3: that's the final. That's where you bring your hands for
- 9:35Speaker 3: the poker run, see who wins. But the event is there.
- 9:39Speaker 2: At the school at right around eleven.
- 9:42Speaker 3: Clock, around eleven eleven to twelve. The food is served
- 9:45Speaker 3: around noon.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, we're going to talk about the food here
- 9:48Speaker 2: in just a second. But so it's roughly a two
- 9:51Speaker 2: hour course, right, yeah, that the thunder Chickens have mapped out,
- 9:56Speaker 2: planned out, yep, communicated. Well, listen, you got to get
- 10:00Speaker 2: on the Berrytown thunder Chickens Facebook page see the course
- 10:06Speaker 2: and you know, get familiar with it. But we'll all
- 10:10Speaker 2: be together. Eleven o'clock ish is when we arrive back
- 10:15Speaker 2: at Berrytown School. Food's going to be served, and then
- 10:18Speaker 2: we're going to be wrapping things up.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Around three, around three, right, right, And if you're not
- 10:24Speaker 3: doing the poker run, just come to the school. You
- 10:26Speaker 3: can buy your poker hands there. And there's all sorts
- 10:29Speaker 3: of things going on.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, and we're going to talk about some of
- 10:33Speaker 2: those things. Let's primarily dive into the food. The meal
- 10:40Speaker 2: itself is so worth the ticket price.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Which fifteen dollars, fifteen dollars for yeah, and it's less
- 10:50Speaker 3: for the kids.
- 10:51Speaker 4: The food, the food has always been so good.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, tell us about the chef.
- 10:59Speaker 3: The chef I can't say enough about Randy Henry, who's
- 11:03Speaker 3: been my neighbor and as close.
- 11:05Speaker 4: To a brother as I'll ever have.
- 11:07Speaker 3: He has taken this event every year and with his
- 11:12Speaker 3: son Snapper and some friends along with Harry, they get
- 11:16Speaker 3: out there and they cook the meal at the school.
- 11:20Speaker 4: It's just it's so good. The food is so good.
- 11:23Speaker 3: Come just for the meal. Come for the meal, you know,
- 11:26Speaker 3: if anything, come to support the event.
- 11:30Speaker 2: I have on occasion snuck back for seconds and thirds,
- 11:38Speaker 2: but I think he's doing. Is he doing his famous.
- 11:41Speaker 4: Oh he is, Yes he is.
- 11:43Speaker 3: Yep, Hamburger's hot dogs, salads, dessert. Yeah, all that for
- 11:48Speaker 3: fifteen dollars and all of it, all of.
- 11:51Speaker 4: It, JD.
- 11:52Speaker 3: All of these proceeds go to the park every dime,
- 11:55Speaker 3: every dime.
- 11:56Speaker 2: I love that.
- 11:57Speaker 4: Yes, yes, it's the best part. There's part.
- 12:00Speaker 2: There's no overhead there. Everything is donated, the food at
- 12:03Speaker 2: the time, the love, the volunteering.
- 12:05Speaker 4: Every everything. Yes, ye, all right.
- 12:09Speaker 2: So once again, if you're just joining us, we have
- 12:13Speaker 2: Linda Mercy. We're talking about the twenty fifth annual Travis
- 12:18Speaker 2: Mercy Memorial Skate Park Fundraiser, which is going to be
- 12:21Speaker 2: on the twenty second, that's a Saturday, and that is
- 12:26Speaker 2: one week from this coming Saturday. It is going to
- 12:31Speaker 2: start at the Great Energy Store. Nine o'clock sharp is
- 12:34Speaker 2: what we're moving. Fifteen is registration, Yes, yeah, and then
- 12:38Speaker 2: nine o'clock we're moving. We're on the trail, we're going,
- 12:42Speaker 2: and roughly two hours later we will be coming into
- 12:46Speaker 2: the Barrytown School around eleven o'clock and enjoying an incredible meal.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Yes, yes, and more and so much more and so
- 12:53Speaker 3: much more because there's such an effort of this silent auction. Sure,
- 12:57Speaker 3: the vendors in our area. There's ski tickets, there's I mean,
- 13:01Speaker 3: you name it. Everything is there and the beautiful Should
- 13:04Speaker 3: I mention the quilt?
- 13:05Speaker 2: Now, let's let's talk about the quilt? Yeah, of course, Okay,
- 13:09Speaker 2: this is something that was The quilt Raffle started to
- 13:13Speaker 2: when your mom, my.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Mom in two thousand, okay, sod off first year. Yeah,
- 13:20Speaker 3: she's made a quilt every year and that quilt brings
- 13:23Speaker 3: in close to one thousand dollars every single year for
- 13:28Speaker 3: that part. People are so gracious about wanting to buy
- 13:33Speaker 3: the tickets because it quilt's beautiful.
- 13:35Speaker 4: Well, my mom is no longer able to do that.
- 13:38Speaker 3: She's she's passed that on to my sister and my niece. Okay,
- 13:44Speaker 3: and together they have built this built they've sown this
- 13:47Speaker 3: beautiful quilt called Lula's Waterfall, and it's gorgeous. And you
- 13:53Speaker 3: can buy the tickets right there at the event send ticket, yes,
- 13:58Speaker 3: and you can. And we're going to draw the took
- 14:00Speaker 3: at the event, so it's not like you're going to
- 14:02Speaker 3: wait two weeks to find out. It's drawn right there,
- 14:04Speaker 3: so you can bring it home if you're the lucky one.
- 14:07Speaker 2: If you've got a Mama Lulu quilt, you're hanging onto this.
- 14:12Speaker 3: Thing forever, forever because it was made with hours and
- 14:16Speaker 3: hours of love.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Yeah, museum piece.
- 14:18Speaker 4: I might even say, yes, you could say that, really.
- 14:21Speaker 2: I mean it's it's uh and and they're all one
- 14:25Speaker 2: of a kind.
- 14:26Speaker 4: Yeah, they're all one of a kind. Yeah.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Gosh, all those quilts over the.
- 14:30Speaker 4: Years, over the years, twenty plus twenty yep.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Yeah, so we've never missed a quilt.
- 14:39Speaker 4: There's always always a quilt. Okay, always a quilt. Yeah.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Bring bring you know, whether you're on a sledter or not,
- 14:47Speaker 2: bring some Bring some cash with you, yes, and throw
- 14:50Speaker 2: it in the pot for this, you know, I mean,
- 14:52Speaker 2: just get involved with this. It's amazing we do.
- 14:55Speaker 3: We need to really get the users that use the
- 14:58Speaker 3: park to help us the fundraiser because this year I've
- 15:02Speaker 3: been told by Guy Norwood, who's the new recreation director,
- 15:06Speaker 3: that some maintenance needs to be done to a couple
- 15:09Speaker 3: of the ramps. Okay, because it's been there for twenty
- 15:12Speaker 3: five years, right, So we need to fund. We'd like
- 15:16Speaker 3: to fund so it takes the money off from the taxpayers.
- 15:19Speaker 3: So this is what we're doing this year.
- 15:21Speaker 4: Okay, you ever get out there on the skateboarder, Well,
- 15:25Speaker 4: I'll tell you.
- 15:26Speaker 3: We put a learn to skate event on every year.
- 15:31Speaker 3: The kids, Oh it's and you know Curtis Ritchie, he's fantastic.
- 15:36Speaker 3: He's helped me every year and he knows other skateboarders
- 15:41Speaker 3: that are older skateboarders, and they come and they take
- 15:45Speaker 3: these group of kids that are usually between the numbers
- 15:48Speaker 3: of eighteen and twenty five. We get a lot of
- 15:50Speaker 3: kids free to the kids. They all get a free helmet,
- 15:54Speaker 3: they all get a free T shirt. The event is free,
- 15:58Speaker 3: and they help them learn to skateboard.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Wow.
- 16:01Speaker 3: And so this is where this money comes from that
- 16:03Speaker 3: we're raising. Is the is for the kids. And I
- 16:08Speaker 3: want to shout out also to my employer. I'm retired
- 16:13Speaker 3: of course, but my employer for years now has every
- 16:17Speaker 3: single year with the paint we buy the paint for
- 16:19Speaker 3: the skate park, which is specialized. Paint has to have
- 16:23Speaker 3: a sand in it so it's not slippery. So it's
- 16:26Speaker 3: almost one thousand dollars for the paint to paint those ramps.
- 16:29Speaker 3: We buy it with the fundraising money and the Hiccock
- 16:32Speaker 3: emboardment employees half a day, three quarters of a day.
- 16:37Speaker 3: They volunteer their time and they paint that skate park
- 16:41Speaker 3: and it's called here when you need Us, And it's
- 16:44Speaker 3: just an event the Hiccock emboardment has done.
- 16:48Speaker 2: And the ically during the summer.
- 16:50Speaker 3: During the summer, right and it takes the time and
- 16:52Speaker 3: the away from the employees for the recreation department. So
- 16:57Speaker 3: there's a lot of volunteering that goes on park behind
- 17:00Speaker 3: the scenes.
- 17:01Speaker 4: Behind the scenes.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Yeah, this isn't just we have this one event every
- 17:06Speaker 2: year and it's just thrown together and plug and play.
- 17:09Speaker 4: There's a lot of moving moving parts.
- 17:12Speaker 2: Wow.
- 17:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 17:15Speaker 2: And the shout out to fast for getting behind this too. Absolutely,
- 17:19Speaker 2: they promote this. This has become a staple event for
- 17:23Speaker 2: vast frames. Absolutely, snow machiners come from everywhere.
- 17:26Speaker 4: From everywhere.
- 17:28Speaker 3: I've had guys come in there staying in local hotels
- 17:32Speaker 3: and then they come to me and say what's this
- 17:34Speaker 3: all about? But they come to the event. So we're
- 17:37Speaker 3: hoping that this snow it comes, you know, it comes
- 17:41Speaker 3: from wherever you are, it come come.
- 17:45Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 17:45Speaker 2: I remember, yeah, Maine, New Hampshire. I remember one year
- 17:49Speaker 2: that I was there. There was a group of folks
- 17:51Speaker 2: from Massachusetts.
- 17:52Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely, that had.
- 17:54Speaker 2: That had trailered up and they weren't really overly familiar
- 17:58Speaker 2: with the area, but they they got on the trail
- 18:01Speaker 2: network and they're like, hey, what's going on here? And
- 18:03Speaker 2: they got involved and they were like, wow, we have
- 18:06Speaker 2: this incredible meal afterwards and we get.
- 18:08Speaker 4: It is great.
- 18:09Speaker 2: They made friends. Yes, and now they come up.
- 18:12Speaker 3: Every year as long as there's snow. Yeah, they'll be there.
- 18:16Speaker 4: I'm sure. Yeah.
- 18:18Speaker 2: I love this. I love this event. I love everything
- 18:20Speaker 2: about it. I'm going to ask you here in a
- 18:22Speaker 2: second how much money has been raised over over the
- 18:24Speaker 2: years but the Silent Auction. Can folks donate to that now?
- 18:32Speaker 4: Yes?
- 18:33Speaker 3: Yes, and we have so many nice donations already, but
- 18:36Speaker 3: we could always take more. And then, as I said,
- 18:40Speaker 3: one of every penny that is taken in on this
- 18:43Speaker 3: event goes directly to that park.
- 18:46Speaker 2: So nice. It is no banks involved stuff. I love that.
- 18:52Speaker 2: I love that all right. So how do folks, if
- 18:55Speaker 2: they are, if they're listening right now, they have something
- 18:57Speaker 2: that's that's new, that's nice, how do they.
- 18:59Speaker 3: How do they oh, absolutely contact me, contact me and
- 19:03Speaker 3: that there is a beautiful.
- 19:07Speaker 4: Ad in the Washington world. This week.
- 19:09Speaker 3: She came out yesterday beautiful. They do such a great job.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Deb and I were talking about it yesterday.
- 19:14Speaker 3: Phillips, Oh yeah, absolutely, and my name my numbers on there,
- 19:18Speaker 3: but I'm going to give it to you.
- 19:19Speaker 4: It's eight oh.
- 19:20Speaker 3: Two two seven nine seven five one five. And we
- 19:26Speaker 3: take anything for donations.
- 19:28Speaker 4: I mean, you name it.
- 19:29Speaker 3: We maple syrup, we have maple syrup donated. We have
- 19:33Speaker 3: tree Christmas trees, cut your own Christmas trees. I mean,
- 19:36Speaker 3: I could go on and on and change. From mcclouds.
- 19:40Speaker 3: We have things from Nelson I mean, we just have
- 19:43Speaker 3: so much stuff.
- 19:44Speaker 2: Nelson's.
- 19:45Speaker 4: They're amazing.
- 19:46Speaker 2: They're involved with us every every year.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Every year. Mcloud's two very big donators.
- 19:53Speaker 2: Sure, sweatshirts, hats, clothing.
- 19:56Speaker 3: Anything, anything. Oh the vast definitely brings their their swag.
- 20:01Speaker 2: And you know, what are what are some of the
- 20:03Speaker 2: more unusual things that you remember as being part of
- 20:07Speaker 2: the Silent Auction. There must have been something a date
- 20:13Speaker 2: night with Randy Henry.
- 20:14Speaker 3: Oh no, no, well he is married, so I mean
- 20:17Speaker 3: he can't do that.
- 20:18Speaker 4: So, uh, you don't know. I mean, no, We've just
- 20:24Speaker 4: I mean there's just been everything everything donated. There's stuff
- 20:27Speaker 4: for the kids.
- 20:28Speaker 3: So when the kids come and they want to put
- 20:31Speaker 3: their name down for a dollar, there's things for the kids.
- 20:35Speaker 4: There's kids for everybody. There's some for everybody.
- 20:37Speaker 3: Homemade cookies in a big, huge jar donated. I mean
