- 2:12Speaker 2: a hurdling today. I am sitting down with Amanda Vestri.
- 2:21Speaker 2: She is a pro runner for Brooks. How we doing, Amanda,
- 2:25Speaker 2: Welcome to Hurdle.
- 2:26Speaker 1: So excited to be here. Yeah, I'm doing really well.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Thanks for having me on.
- 2:30Speaker 2: How's the weather where we're standing today?
- 2:32Speaker 1: Oh, it's very hot. I think there's a bit of
- 2:35Speaker 1: a heat advisory going on this week, so it's been
- 2:38Speaker 1: it's really brutal right now.
- 2:40Speaker 2: And in Florida, So are you getting up crazy early
- 2:43Speaker 2: then to do your running.
- 2:44Speaker 1: It doesn't really help to go any earlier because the
- 2:47Speaker 1: humidity is higher in the morning. So I'll usually run
- 2:50Speaker 1: around like eight thirty and it's really hot out. But
- 2:53Speaker 1: I kind of have grown accustomed to it a little bit,
- 2:56Speaker 1: and yeah, I'm pretty good in the heat, so actually
- 3:00Speaker 1: quite enjoy it. Obviously it's gotten a little bit warmer
- 3:02Speaker 1: than I like, but yeah, I don't actually think it
- 3:05Speaker 1: helps that much running at like five am here because
- 3:07Speaker 1: the humidity is like one hundred percent and then like
- 3:10Speaker 1: you know, it goes down a little bit over the
- 3:11Speaker 1: next few hours in the morning.
- 3:13Speaker 2: So I was I was just in in Paris and
- 3:16Speaker 2: there was like record heat. It was like the headlines
- 3:18Speaker 2: like record heat, everyone's dangerous, everyone's swimming in the end,
- 3:22Speaker 2: like it was crazy, and I thought, like, okay, let
- 3:25Speaker 2: me get up, go early, get this run done. I
- 3:28Speaker 2: also made the mistake that it was more humid at
- 3:31Speaker 2: six than it was at eight fifteen in the morning.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Yeah. No, it's like soup in the morning. It's crazy.
- 3:37Speaker 1: I yeah, it's like running you can like just feel
- 3:39Speaker 1: like you're like breathing water. Kind of it's crazy.
- 3:43Speaker 2: What is it that you like about living in Florida
- 3:46Speaker 2: right now? Because I know that you haven't been there
- 3:47Speaker 2: for all that long.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I I'm very familiar with Florida now
- 3:51Speaker 1: because my parents moved here like a few years ago,
- 3:55Speaker 1: three or four years ago, and so I've I've been
- 3:57Speaker 1: to Florida back and forth a bunch of times since
- 3:59Speaker 1: I was in college. And then you know, when I
- 4:02Speaker 1: did my first two years as a pro with ZAP
- 4:05Speaker 1: in North Carolina, I came back to Florida quite a bit.
- 4:07Speaker 1: But living here full time, it's definitely been interesting, and
- 4:11Speaker 1: I don't know, I just really like being around family.
- 4:13Speaker 1: And my boyfriend and his whole family are down here,
- 4:16Speaker 1: so it's really nice. And yeah, just having that support
- 4:20Speaker 1: is nice. And then also just having the option to
- 4:22Speaker 1: leave if I want to go to like Boulder, Like
- 4:25Speaker 1: my coach lives in Colorado, so there's there's always that
- 4:28Speaker 1: option to train there, and some of my other families
- 4:31Speaker 1: from New York, so I could go train there. And
- 4:33Speaker 1: just so kind of, you know, nice to have a
- 4:35Speaker 1: home base somewhere and then just train wherever you want.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Sounds like you're surrounded by a lot of support, and
- 4:41Speaker 2: we'll talk about your coach in just a little bit.
- 4:44Speaker 2: But what stuck out to me there was that you
- 4:47Speaker 2: said it can be interesting. What do you mean by that, Amanda.
- 4:51Speaker 1: I mean, it's not really like a normal setup. I
- 4:54Speaker 1: don't think for most athletes. Like I think most athletes
- 4:57Speaker 1: are probably training at altitude or in more like moderate climates.
- 5:02Speaker 1: But if Florida's a pretty extreme climate, especially in the summer,
- 5:05Speaker 1: I will say, like during the winter months, it is
- 5:07Speaker 1: super advantageous to be here because you're, you know, you're
- 5:10Speaker 1: just getting nice moderate weather, especially where particularly where I live,
- 5:14Speaker 1: it doesn't stay hot all year round. Like in the winters,
- 5:17Speaker 1: it will get a little bit colder, which is nice.
- 5:19Speaker 1: But yeah, I just think it's like a different way
- 5:21Speaker 1: of approaching pro running. I don't think a lot of
- 5:24Speaker 1: pro runners train in Florida, but I don't know. I
- 5:27Speaker 1: think it works for me. And you know, I did
- 5:29Speaker 1: my whole Boston build here and it ended up being
- 5:31Speaker 1: a somewhat decent race. But I think it was less
- 5:34Speaker 1: about the weather and just more about lack of preparation
- 5:37Speaker 1: in certain areas. But but yeah, I think like the
- 5:40Speaker 1: traditional route is to just go up to you know,
- 5:43Speaker 1: altitude and train their full time. But I think Florida
- 5:46Speaker 1: gives you a unique like humidity component to it as well,
- 5:50Speaker 1: which helps you know those adaptations, those adaptations, And a
- 5:55Speaker 1: lot of times I see when people are coming down
- 5:57Speaker 1: from altitude and racing in the summer, they get really
- 6:00Speaker 1: beat up in the in the like East Coast heat,
- 6:03Speaker 1: in humidity. So I do think there's something to be
- 6:05Speaker 1: said for humidity training a little bit as well, Oh
- 6:09Speaker 1: for sure.
- 6:09Speaker 2: And I mean you know that you're peer. Des Linden
- 6:13Speaker 2: now snowbirds in Florida in the winter, so she too
- 6:16Speaker 2: getting some of that Florida training in Yeah.
- 6:18Speaker 1: No, it's great. It's it's really good. I think it's hard,
- 6:21Speaker 1: but it's worth it when you get out of here
- 6:23Speaker 1: and you're like, oh my gosh, I can breathe again.
- 6:25Speaker 1: So yeah, I can't.
- 6:27Speaker 2: I can't even handle you with the like I had
- 6:29Speaker 2: an okay race in Boston, and I did listen to
- 6:32Speaker 2: you unpack that a little bit on the City Is podcast.
- 6:36Speaker 2: How are we feeling now that we're a bit more
- 6:39Speaker 2: removed recognizing that, yes we had a pr but also
- 6:44Speaker 2: there was just more that you wanted from that day.
- 6:46Speaker 1: In the immedia aftermath, it was really hard to not
- 6:49Speaker 1: be hard on myself. But when I kind of zoom
- 6:52Speaker 1: out a little bit and I look at, you know,
- 6:54Speaker 1: my performances in New York and Boston, I do think
- 6:57Speaker 1: I was a little hard on myself after both of them,
- 6:59Speaker 1: and it just goes to show how greedy we are
- 7:03Speaker 1: as runners, sometimes always wanting the next thing and not
- 7:06Speaker 1: really stopping to appreciate, like what you've just done. And yeah,
- 7:09Speaker 1: I got through that entire build healthy and towing the
- 7:12Speaker 1: line healthy, so you know, that was a win in
- 7:15Speaker 1: and of itself. But you know, I just we felt
- 7:19Speaker 1: like I was in two twenty two shape, maybe two
- 7:22Speaker 1: twenty one shape. So I just think, like you when
- 7:25Speaker 1: you look at you know, what I ended up running,
- 7:27Speaker 1: it's like, well, where do we go wrong? You know?
- 7:29Speaker 1: And that race just really beat up my body pretty
- 7:32Speaker 1: badly for a few weeks too. So yeah, I don't know.
- 7:36Speaker 1: I just think I think overall, it just wasn't the
- 7:40Speaker 1: dream day I'd hoped for. And I think I'm putting
- 7:42Speaker 1: a lot of pressure on myself as like a young
- 7:44Speaker 1: marathon or to nail it every time I go out.
- 7:46Speaker 1: But definitely I think it's a learned skill. You don't
- 7:49Speaker 1: just come into the marathon and like nail it the
- 7:51Speaker 1: first few tries.
- 7:52Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah, I mean to recap for those that
- 7:57Speaker 2: are unfamiliar. You've got a new PR that day two
- 8:00Speaker 2: twenty four, over a minute faster than your previous PR.
- 8:03Speaker 2: And that was your second marathon.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that was the second one.
- 8:08Speaker 2: So all of your feelings though, so understandable and so valid.
- 8:12Speaker 2: You know, we don't work hard for something not to
- 8:14Speaker 2: go as we'd hoped. Have you always been the kind
- 8:17Speaker 2: of person that's approached your performance with this like really
- 8:21Speaker 2: critical lens or do you think that this is something
- 8:24Speaker 2: that you've fallen into a little bit more as you've
- 8:27Speaker 2: been tackling these new challenges and more in your pro career.
- 8:30Speaker 1: No, I've always been like that, even like I think
- 8:33Speaker 1: in starting in middle school, you know, because I've been
- 8:36Speaker 1: running since I was like eleven years old. Yeah, I've
- 8:38Speaker 1: just always had kind of a self critical like view
- 8:43Speaker 1: on my own running and not in like a you know,
- 8:46Speaker 1: hugely detrimental way. But I think sometimes it could be
- 8:49Speaker 1: a little bit much, and you know, I try to
- 8:51Speaker 1: work on it. I try to like think about what
- 8:53Speaker 1: have I done good first before I start thinking about
- 8:55Speaker 1: the negatives. But I think that's with everyone. Like I'm
- 8:58Speaker 1: not unique in that. I think a lot of people
- 9:00Speaker 1: think of like, oh, what could I have done better?
- 9:02Speaker 1: And if you're not doing that, I don't, I mean,
- 9:05Speaker 1: I don't know how how you can improve. Like I
- 9:08Speaker 1: I don't just do it because I want to be critical.
- 9:10Speaker 1: I do it because I'm like, all right, what do
- 9:11Speaker 1: I need to do better for next time? But yeah,
- 9:13Speaker 1: I think especially in the marathon, I've just always been
- 9:16Speaker 1: told i'd be a good marathon or so the fact
- 9:18Speaker 1: that I'm don't feel like I've been nailing them and
- 9:21Speaker 1: I'm just kind of like surviving the last six miles
- 9:23Speaker 1: of the marathon, I'm like, I just want to know
- 9:25Speaker 1: what I need to do to not make it like
- 9:28Speaker 1: a you know, a suffer fest at the end, you know,
- 9:30Speaker 1: because like obviously it's going to be painful, but you
- 9:33Speaker 1: know what am I missing where I'm like just really
- 9:36Speaker 1: having to grind through the last six miles versus like
- 9:40Speaker 1: appropriately suffering through the last six miles. So I'm just
- 9:43Speaker 1: I just get bothered when I don't like nail something.
- 9:46Speaker 2: And I love, Yeah, I love the term appropriately suffering.
- 9:50Speaker 2: YEAHNT know, man, maybe it's running a flat marathon.
- 9:53Speaker 1: You know, there's so many components of the marathon. It's
- 9:55Speaker 1: like the fueling, it's the mental side of it, it's
- 9:59Speaker 1: the fatigue resist component of it. It's like the callousing
- 10:02Speaker 1: of your legs. And like you said, like flat marathon.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Maybe Boston's certainly not flat. So it's just like, you know,
- 10:09Speaker 1: you're pounding those quads for you know, twenty six miles.
- 10:12Speaker 1: It's like, well, of course you're not going to feel
- 10:14Speaker 1: great the last bit. But I think certain people fade
- 10:18Speaker 1: a lot less than I do in the marathon. So
- 10:20Speaker 1: I'm just trying to figure out what I need to
- 10:22Speaker 1: do to not fade.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Is hard, So yeah, yeah, yeah, entirely understandable. I mean,
- 10:26Speaker 2: you mentioned that there are a lot of things that
- 10:28Speaker 2: could work in your favor when we're thinking about tackling
- 10:32Speaker 2: a distance race like the marathon, what would you say
- 10:35Speaker 2: is your strongest superpower as a runner, Knowing that you've
- 10:39Speaker 2: been doing this quite well, as you said, you started
- 10:41Speaker 2: running back in middle school.
- 10:43Speaker 1: I think I just have high discipline and like not
- 10:49Speaker 1: that it's you know, a negative discipline, but I just
- 10:52Speaker 1: like I I'm like a dog with a bone. I
- 10:54Speaker 1: just don't quit even when things go bad, Like I'll
- 10:57Speaker 1: just get through it, get through it, get through it,
- 10:58Speaker 1: and then I'll try again. So I think I just
- 11:01Speaker 1: don't give up, you know. So that's I mean, that's
- 11:03Speaker 1: a powerful tool to have, like even you know, when
- 11:06Speaker 1: you get injured or when racists don't go your way,
- 11:08Speaker 1: just kind of like putting yourself back out there again.
- 11:10Speaker 1: And I know for me, like the first thing I
- 11:13Speaker 1: want to do after a bad race is toe the
- 11:16Speaker 1: line again. And I think a lot of people or
- 11:18Speaker 1: some people would revert to just like well I just
- 11:21Speaker 1: don't want to race for a while. I just don't
- 11:22Speaker 1: want to put myself out there again. But I'm I'm
- 11:25Speaker 1: quite the opposite, Like I just I want to show
- 11:27Speaker 1: up again and try again. So I think probably just
- 11:30Speaker 1: that relentless like pursuit of like trying again, it's probably
- 11:33Speaker 1: one of my superpowers. And like in running overall.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Where do you think that that grit comes from? Where
- 11:39Speaker 2: do you think that you remember first developing that inclination
- 11:43Speaker 2: to keep going hard even when things don't go your way.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Definitely my dad because growing up like he you know,
- 11:50Speaker 1: he would run with me and like just not even
- 11:52Speaker 1: in running, just in others, you know, sports and stuff too.
- 11:55Speaker 1: I think he was always the you know, kind of
- 11:58Speaker 1: like my little coach on the side, just like all right,
- 12:00Speaker 1: get back up, try again, try again, or even like
- 12:03Speaker 1: when he was helping me with math homework and be like,
- 12:05Speaker 1: all right, keep trying until you figure it out. So
- 12:08Speaker 1: probably my dad is a lot of it and just
- 12:11Speaker 1: like teaching us to just never give up, because there
- 12:14Speaker 1: are definitely times like even in I remember in high school,
- 12:18Speaker 1: you know, you go through puberty and there's all these
- 12:20Speaker 1: body changes and I just felt like quitting. I was like,
- 12:23Speaker 1: this isn't worth it, Like I don't you know, I'm
- 12:25Speaker 1: not liking running, And he was like, I'll support whatever
- 12:28Speaker 1: you do, but I just don't think you should give up.
- 12:30Speaker 1: I think you should give yourself a chance. And like,
- 12:32Speaker 1: you know, that type of belief I think from a
- 12:34Speaker 1: parent can go a long way in like in you yourself,
- 12:39Speaker 1: like internalizing that and then you know going forward. It's
- 12:42Speaker 1: exactly what I did in college. I just kept, you know,
- 12:45Speaker 1: kept on trying and trying to build consistency, and even
- 12:49Speaker 1: when I did get injured, you know, it was like
- 12:50Speaker 1: all right, let's get through this injury, and then we'll
- 12:52Speaker 1: start over again and keep trying. So yeah, probably my
- 12:56Speaker 1: probably my dad.
- 12:57Speaker 2: It's one thing to have it instilled in you, however,
- 13:00Speaker 2: it's another thing to let it be executed right. So
- 13:05Speaker 2: for you, there has to be a certain type of
- 13:08Speaker 2: inner dialogue, a certain way that you're talking to yourself
- 13:10Speaker 2: that helps you show up when things feel hard. Can
- 13:14Speaker 2: we unpack that a little bit?
- 13:16Speaker 1: The harder things like stem from comparison a lot, Like
- 13:19Speaker 1: I'll I'll start comparing myself to what other people are
- 13:23Speaker 1: doing and training and or you know what other people,
- 13:26Speaker 1: you know, what their success looks like in racing, and
- 13:29Speaker 1: just I think it's really helpful to like ground myself
- 13:32Speaker 1: and I can only control what I can control, and
- 13:36Speaker 1: you know, I can control having like a positive attitude
- 13:38Speaker 1: when I'm working out. And that's something I had to
- 13:41Speaker 1: work on a lot as a first you know, first
- 13:44Speaker 1: year pro when I came out of college, and my
- 13:46Speaker 1: former coach he'd be like, listen, you have a tendency
- 13:49Speaker 1: to just like think, think the negative when workouts aren't
- 13:52Speaker 1: going your way. He's like, you need to reframe that
- 13:54Speaker 1: and like know that you being negative isn't gonna help
- 13:58Speaker 1: your workout. If anything, it's going to hurt it. So
- 14:01Speaker 1: just kind of like getting through things even when you
- 14:04Speaker 1: don't feel like you can. I think that's a big
- 14:07Speaker 1: part of it. And just like everyone's definition of success
- 14:10Speaker 1: looks different. So for me, it's like if I can
- 14:14Speaker 1: just show up and try my hardest, like that's kind
- 14:17Speaker 1: of all I really want to do, and whatever the
- 14:19Speaker 1: outcome is, like being okay with that, like knowing that
- 14:22Speaker 1: I put the work in to get there.
- 14:24Speaker 2: And it's a both situation, right because you know this
- 14:29Speaker 2: to be true. You know how much goodness there is
- 14:32Speaker 2: in accepting the things that you can't change, talking kindly
- 14:35Speaker 2: to yourself. And we're still also always going to be
- 14:38Speaker 2: our biggest critics, right for sure?
- 14:41Speaker 1: Oh god yeah, oh I've definitely no one can say
- 14:43Speaker 1: anything I haven't already said to myself, and then some
- 14:48Speaker 1: for sure.
- 14:49Speaker 2: And then some And so to have that coach that
- 14:51Speaker 2: first said to you, hey, you have an opportunity here
- 14:54Speaker 2: to reframe, to talk to yourself positively. Do you remember
- 14:58Speaker 2: the difficulties that came with that from the get go?
- 15:02Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, I mean I think like it's just so
- 15:07Speaker 1: easy as humans, Like I think I feel like it's
- 15:09Speaker 1: just human nature to like, overall, I feel like I'm
- 15:12Speaker 1: a pretty positive person, but when it comes to like
- 15:14Speaker 1: grading myself on how I'm doing in the moment, it's
- 15:17Speaker 1: just so easy to you know, you're hurting in the workout,
- 15:21Speaker 1: you're suffering. It's like you're not hitting your paces, especially
- 15:24Speaker 1: in the marathon. Anyone who's done a marathon knows you
- 15:26Speaker 1: get to that point in the build and your legs
- 15:30Speaker 1: just start feeling like lead in workouts and like your
- 15:33Speaker 1: goal pace. You're running, you know, ten to fifteen seconds
- 15:36Speaker 1: per mile slower than your goal pace, and you're feeling terrible.
- 15:39Speaker 1: So you know, it's so easy for your mind to
- 15:41Speaker 1: just go to that place of like, how am I
- 15:43Speaker 1: supposed to run faster than this? And for twenty six miles?
- 15:46Speaker 1: Like we all, we all get to that point, and
- 15:49Speaker 1: so you know, I'd catch myself running and then you know,
- 15:52Speaker 1: my coach would be coming up beside me, you know,
- 15:55Speaker 1: on the you know, in his car or whatever, and
- 15:57Speaker 1: I'd be like, I'm just not hitting the work like
- 16:00Speaker 1: I'm just not doing it. I suck, Like you know,
- 16:02Speaker 1: you just go down that rabbit hole and you need
- 16:05Speaker 1: to be called out on it, or at least I
- 16:07Speaker 1: needed to be called out on it to be like,
- 16:08Speaker 1: all right, let's you know, let's reframe this a little bit, like, hey,
- 16:12Speaker 1: every workout is not going to be a home run
- 16:14Speaker 1: and doesn't need to be a home run. And in fact,
- 16:16Speaker 1: a lot of times those workouts that are really tough
- 16:19Speaker 1: that you have trouble getting through, those are the ones
- 16:21Speaker 1: that help you for the marathon, not the ones where
- 16:23Speaker 1: you feel amazing and you're clipping off the time and
- 16:26Speaker 1: you're just flowing, you know, because it's so easy to
- 16:29Speaker 1: like be positive when things are flowing, but it's a
- 16:31Speaker 1: lot harder to get through those workouts you feel like
- 16:34Speaker 1: crap and actually show yourself that hey, yeah, like it's
- 16:38Speaker 1: okay if I don't hit the times, I still got
- 16:39Speaker 1: through the workout and I got the work that I
- 16:41Speaker 1: needed to get in, because you're not going to feel
- 16:44Speaker 1: good throughout the entire twenty six point two miles, like.
- 16:47Speaker 2: For sure, Yeah, you know, there's something really great about
- 16:51Speaker 2: like confidence builders, like days where things go and feel
- 16:54Speaker 2: super easy, But it is those hard moments that teach
- 16:57Speaker 2: you that you can do a hard thing. Because I mean,
- 17:00Speaker 2: when I went to do that really human run in Paris.
- 17:03Speaker 2: The other day, a friend reminded me, remember the time
- 17:06Speaker 2: that you ran in direct sunlight in one hundred degrees
- 17:09Speaker 2: in Tokyo, And I'm like, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, So
- 17:11Speaker 2: I did that crazy hard thing and lived to tell
- 17:14Speaker 2: the tale, and now we can do this too, exactly.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Yeah, and you just, you know, you just compound all
- 17:20Speaker 1: those things that you've done, and then you know, it
- 17:22Speaker 1: gives you the confidence you need to go into race
- 17:24Speaker 1: day feeling like I've you know, I've done all I
- 17:27Speaker 1: can do. I I went through the lows of you know,
- 17:30Speaker 1: the build, I went through the highs of the build,
- 17:32Speaker 1: and you know, all the little injuries that creep up
- 17:34Speaker 1: on you, and you just kind of talk yourself out
- 17:36Speaker 1: of it and then you just you lay it all
- 17:39Speaker 1: out there on the race day. I guess.
- 17:58Speaker 2: You mentioned that there was a period of time time
- 18:00Speaker 2: where you were asking yourself, is this something that I
- 18:03Speaker 2: still enjoy? When did you get to the point that
- 18:06Speaker 2: you knew, Okay, this isn't only something that I enjoy,
- 18:10Speaker 2: but something that I'm willing to go all in on.
- 18:13Speaker 1: I think it was towards the end of my college career.
- 18:17Speaker 1: I struggled with a few different big injuries in college,
- 18:20Speaker 1: and you know, I would come home from college and
- 18:24Speaker 1: always building back from injuries is so humbling and you
- 18:27Speaker 1: just never feel like you're going to be the same
- 18:29Speaker 1: runner again. And so that was like, those were some
- 18:32Speaker 1: of the moments where I just told my dad like,
- 18:33Speaker 1: I don't maybe you know, running after colleges and in
- 18:37Speaker 1: the cards for me, maybe it's just not going to
- 18:39Speaker 1: be something I meant to do, blah blah blah. But
- 18:42Speaker 1: when he was like, you know, you need to take
- 18:44Speaker 1: a chance on yourself and just try. Like that's kind
- 18:47Speaker 1: of when I flipped the switch a little bit of
- 18:49Speaker 1: like what's it going to hurt if I just keep
- 18:51Speaker 1: showing up and keep trying. And then I started getting
- 18:54Speaker 1: that feeling back again where I was like, oh no,
- 18:56Speaker 1: I do want to do this, and it's just give
- 18:59Speaker 1: yourself another day to just wake up and try again.
- 19:01Speaker 1: And like that's the biggest piece of advice I wish
- 19:04Speaker 1: I could give myself my younger self, is just like
- 19:07Speaker 1: don't put yourself in like these like black and white categories,
- 19:11Speaker 1: just like get up, it's another day, try again. And
- 19:15Speaker 1: I eventually just kept doing that and it started paying off.
- 19:19Speaker 1: I was so glad. I went back for another year
- 19:22Speaker 1: of eligibility and like had a great season at Syracuse
- 19:27Speaker 1: and then you know, I signed with ZAP out of
- 19:31Speaker 1: college and had a great two years there and really
- 19:34Speaker 1: found a lot of joy in the training there. And
- 19:37Speaker 1: you know, we were training in the mountains of Blowing
- 19:39Speaker 1: Rock and I just got really good there, and I
- 19:42Speaker 1: think it just kind of launched into this career that
- 19:45Speaker 1: I have now. But yeah, I think just like getting
- 19:48Speaker 1: up and trying against probably the main thing that helped
- 19:50Speaker 1: me kind of know that, all right, this is something
- 19:53Speaker 1: I do want to do.
- 19:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I love to hear that. And you know, I
- 19:57Speaker 2: was with Laura Thweite over the weekend and I was
- 20:00Speaker 2: telling me. She was telling me, I said, who do
- 20:03Speaker 2: you think is the sleeper right now? Like who is
- 20:05Speaker 2: going to be the person that blows our socks off
- 20:08Speaker 2: over the next year? And she threw your hat into
- 20:10Speaker 2: the ring.
- 20:11Speaker 1: She's the best. Laura's always been my number one, you know,
- 20:15Speaker 1: out of like no one ever counted, like no one's
- 20:18Speaker 1: ever kind of like I've never been anyone's pick, I guess,
- 20:21Speaker 1: but Laura's always been one to root for me, So
- 20:25Speaker 1: I really appreciate it.
- 20:28Speaker 2: Yeah, she's so funny. We had we had quite a
- 20:31Speaker 2: time having hot girl summer moments when I was with
- 20:34Speaker 2: her in Paris, just you know, living our best lives,
- 20:37Speaker 2: watching France play in the World Cup in France and
- 20:40Speaker 2: out of time recommend I love that.
- 20:42Speaker 1: That's so fun Laura seems like she'd be just so
- 20:45Speaker 1: funnyng out with as well.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Oh man, well, I do want to take it back
- 20:49Speaker 2: to you talking about finding that joy when you first
- 20:53Speaker 2: got into the professional scene. Of course, with all the
- 20:57Speaker 2: good come some of the difficult. Talk to me a
- 21:00Speaker 2: little bit about what the most challenging part was of
- 21:02Speaker 2: your first couple of years running prow Yeah, I.
- 21:05Speaker 1: Think just navigating running being kind of like my only
- 21:09Speaker 1: obligation because I think in college you're focused on classes
- 21:14Speaker 1: and stuff as well, and you have other things going on.
- 21:16Speaker 1: Not that I had a lot going on, but I
- 21:18Speaker 1: did have, you know, school that I was focused on
- 21:20Speaker 1: and all those things. But I think when you turn
- 21:24Speaker 1: your focus into something, it's just so one dimensional. I
- 21:28Speaker 1: think it's hard not to be even more critical of
- 21:32Speaker 1: what you're doing because you're like, well, this is all
- 21:33Speaker 1: I'm doing, you know, like I should be blowing this
- 21:35Speaker 1: out of the water, like this should be a great workout.
- 21:38Speaker 1: So I think the number one thing I had trouble
- 21:41Speaker 1: with the first couple of years as a pro was
- 21:44Speaker 1: I put so much emphasis on every single workout and
- 21:47Speaker 1: put a lot of pressure on myself to just absolutely
- 21:50Speaker 1: nail the workouts and not only like, you know, do
- 21:53Speaker 1: what it was expected of me in workouts, but go
- 21:56Speaker 1: above and beyond and kind of just like always striving
- 22:00Speaker 1: for perfection in every single day. And I think that's
- 22:03Speaker 1: just such a slippery slope to go down, and you
- 22:05Speaker 1: learn very quickly that not every day is going to
- 22:07Speaker 1: be perfect. So that was a huge learning curve the
- 22:12Speaker 1: first couple of years as a pro. And now I'm
- 22:15Speaker 1: much more like that's just so unrealistic and it's a
- 22:18Speaker 1: really good way to burn yourself out of a long
- 22:20Speaker 1: term career. So I don't, I don't really, you know,
- 22:23Speaker 1: abide by that type of thinking anymore, but I certainly
- 22:26Speaker 1: did when I was a little bit younger.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Even talking about like your life now, and it sounds
- 22:32Speaker 2: like there's so much balance with what you've created would
- 22:35Speaker 2: for yourself, yes, one.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Hundred percent like that that was another, you know, another
- 22:40Speaker 1: one of the reasons that I just felt like drawn
- 22:43Speaker 1: to Florida because I for so many years had just
- 22:47Speaker 1: believed you could only be successful in you know, one
- 22:50Speaker 1: place or the place that you got good. But the
- 22:53Speaker 1: truth is, as long as you do things, you know,
- 22:56Speaker 1: with with intention and you plan out you know, like
- 23:00Speaker 1: you know, for example, before my next marathon, like planning
- 23:03Speaker 1: out a trip to altitude and getting out of the heat. Like,
- 23:05Speaker 1: as long as you're intentional and you're smart about your decisions.
- 23:09Speaker 1: I want to have a full life outside of running competitively,
- 23:12Speaker 1: and that for me that means not living in you know, Colorado,
- 23:18Speaker 1: you know, full you know, all year where I have
- 23:20Speaker 1: no family around there, you know. So it's like some
- 23:23Speaker 1: people don't get it, and that's fine, like, but for me,
- 23:26Speaker 1: it works, and like I'm going to run the best
- 23:28Speaker 1: when I'm the happiest, So that's just kind of like
- 23:30Speaker 1: what I'm going to do. And yeah, I give credit
- 23:33Speaker 1: to the people who don't, but I have the choice,
- 23:36Speaker 1: thankfully with Brooks, to do what I want.
- 23:38Speaker 2: So yeah, well, I was going to say, like it's
- 23:41Speaker 2: a theme really with the athletes that Brooks works with,
- 23:45Speaker 2: enabling and empowering all of you to be wherever feels
- 23:48Speaker 2: good for you. I mean the way that you're talking
- 23:50Speaker 2: about the balance that you've found in your training is
- 23:53Speaker 2: very similar to the way that both jess and Susannah
- 23:57Speaker 2: and Erica I talk about their training. It's they're all
- 24:00Speaker 2: over the country, you're all not training in the same place,
- 24:03Speaker 2: that you come together in these opportunities that are intentional
- 24:07Speaker 2: to help bring the best out in you.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. And I think I think the hard thing
- 24:12Speaker 1: is like for those first couple of years out of
- 24:16Speaker 1: out of school, I just felt like I was stagnant,
- 24:20Speaker 1: like I was just in school again, but different things.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Because just like being in the same place all year,
- 24:27Speaker 1: just going to practice every day, no family around you, really,
- 24:31Speaker 1: no one other than you know, a couple of teammates.
- 24:33Speaker 1: It's like, I don't want that to be the only
- 24:35Speaker 1: thing I have in my life. So I think, like,
- 24:37Speaker 1: you know, like you mentioned, like Jess, Eric and Susannah,
- 24:40Speaker 1: they all have lives outside of running. You know, Susanna
- 24:42Speaker 1: is a teacher, just does a million things, you know,
- 24:46Speaker 1: So it's like it's just one of those things where
- 24:50Speaker 1: to me, it just doesn't like it's kind of a
- 24:52Speaker 1: no brainer, Like if we work with a company that
- 24:55Speaker 1: isn't absolutely incredible. And the first thing they said to
- 24:58Speaker 1: me when I signed with them was, no, we want
- 25:00Speaker 1: you to train where you train best, And for me,
- 25:03Speaker 1: that's going to be all over the place. You know.
- 25:06Speaker 1: It's going to be certain times a year when I'm
- 25:08Speaker 1: not you know, training super hard or I'm in between marathons,
- 25:11Speaker 1: it's going to be in Florida. Other times when I'm
- 25:14Speaker 1: preparing for a marathon, it's going to be at altitude.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Like it's just going to change. You don't need to
- 25:18Speaker 1: be in one box the whole, you know, the whole year.
- 25:22Speaker 1: I think that's just a good recipe for burnout. And
- 25:26Speaker 1: like if you're always looking forward to the end of
- 25:29Speaker 1: your season or the end of your marathon, it's not
- 25:31Speaker 1: a good sign. Like for me, even though we you know,
- 25:34Speaker 1: we touched on Boston not going exactly how I wanted,
- 25:37Speaker 1: I really enjoyed the build, like I had fun with
- 25:39Speaker 1: every work IU. I had great fun on the long runs,
- 25:42Speaker 1: like you know, running twenty five mile long runs and
- 25:44Speaker 1: actually having fun doing it, like I never would have thought,
- 25:47Speaker 1: you know, that was possible. But it's because I have other,
- 25:49Speaker 1: you know, things going on in my life outside of
- 25:52Speaker 1: just practicing.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Okay, but practically, like, how does one find the fun
- 25:58Speaker 2: in a twenty five mile long run? Please share your
- 26:01Speaker 2: secrets that people want or now.
- 26:02Speaker 1: I mean I would go to my brother lives, you know,
- 26:07Speaker 1: just west of me, like forty minutes west of me,
- 26:09Speaker 1: and we have a really nice hilly loop over there.
- 26:11Speaker 1: But you know, my dad would go on the bike
- 26:13Speaker 1: with me and do all my bottles, my marathon bottles
- 26:16Speaker 1: with me, and just I think sharing, you know, two
- 26:19Speaker 1: and a half hours of that with your dad is
- 26:21Speaker 1: just I mean, it's going to be fun because you know,
- 26:23Speaker 1: he's you're doing something pretty epic and twenty five miles.
- 26:27Speaker 1: I'm like, are you kidding me? Like when I did
- 26:29Speaker 1: that long run, I was like, oh my gosh, you
- 26:31Speaker 1: feel like I just you know, ran a marathon, which
- 26:33Speaker 1: I almost did. But it's just cool, I think to
- 26:37Speaker 1: just be clipping off miles, you know, with your dad
- 26:40Speaker 1: and he's kind of like my coach here a little
- 26:43Speaker 1: bit like David's my coach. But then my dad kind
- 26:46Speaker 1: of you know, enforces the workouts and stuff.
- 26:49Speaker 2: It's having like a little chat every now and again
- 26:52Speaker 2: to get on the same page. Yeah, yeah, what do
- 26:57Speaker 2: you think it is that you look for in the
- 27:00Speaker 2: right coach for you. I know that you've been working
- 27:02Speaker 2: with David for a second now, and it takes a
- 27:04Speaker 2: very special relationship for this to work in the capacity
- 27:08Speaker 2: that you two are working together and knowing that you
- 27:10Speaker 2: and him are not located in the same place. So
- 27:13Speaker 2: what is it about his coaching style and what is
- 27:15Speaker 2: it that you look for as an athlete for someone
- 27:18Speaker 2: to really support you.
- 27:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean the first conversation we had was like
- 27:24Speaker 1: August or September of twenty twenty five. It was, you know,
- 27:28Speaker 1: it was before New York, but it was kind of
- 27:30Speaker 1: around the time that we knew that ZAP was shutting
- 27:33Speaker 1: their doors and closing up shop. And I just kind of,
- 27:36Speaker 1: you know, reached out to Jess and I was like, Hey,
- 27:38Speaker 1: I don't know what I'm going to do about like
- 27:40Speaker 1: a new coach and all this, and she gave me
- 27:43Speaker 1: his number, and like the first conversation we had, he
- 27:46Speaker 1: just like it was very clear that he believed in
- 27:49Speaker 1: me quite a bit and really saw a lot of
- 27:51Speaker 1: potential in me. And I think that's like one of
- 27:54Speaker 1: the biggest things that a coach can do, is like
- 27:57Speaker 1: show you that they really believe in you and that
- 27:59Speaker 1: they think that you have the capabilities of doing, you know,
- 28:02Speaker 1: achieving your dreams. First conversation we had together, I was like,
- 28:06Speaker 1: I really like the way he thinks about training, and
- 28:09Speaker 1: we were very much on the same page in terms
- 28:12Speaker 1: of wanting my career to be long term, not just
- 28:16Speaker 1: like really fiery in the short term. And I think
- 28:19Speaker 1: there's plenty of coaches out there that I could work
- 28:21Speaker 1: with that could get me really good, really quickly, but
- 28:25Speaker 1: David's approach is definitely more with long term health in mind,
- 28:28Speaker 1: and those are some of the things we've really dialed in.
- 28:31Speaker 1: I was the healthiest I'd ever been right before Boston,
- 28:34Speaker 1: So to me, that's top, top priority. And I think
- 28:38Speaker 1: having a coach that is going to make health top
- 28:41Speaker 1: priority is really really really important, especially for young female athletes.
- 28:46Speaker 1: That should be the number one thing you're looking for
- 28:47Speaker 1: in a coach, not someone who's just promising like good
- 28:51Speaker 1: results or something like that.
- 28:52Speaker 2: Talk to me about that. In practicality, though, when you
- 28:55Speaker 2: say that you were a the healthiest that you've ever
- 28:58Speaker 2: been and be there were processes that enabled that, Yeah,
- 29:01Speaker 2: ain't that picture?
- 29:02Speaker 1: Yeah, just like you know, physiological processes like you know,
- 29:06Speaker 1: especially for young female athletes, like getting your cycle every
- 29:09Speaker 1: month so important, and that was like one of the
- 29:11Speaker 1: number one things. It's like if you're running over one
- 29:13Speaker 1: hundred miles a week, like you know, it's hard to
- 29:16Speaker 1: keep everything regular, but we did, and it's because we
- 29:20Speaker 1: are staying on top of the fueling and making that
- 29:22Speaker 1: a priority in every conversation, talking about the hard things,
- 29:27Speaker 1: the things that you know, certain things I was dealing with,
- 29:30Speaker 1: and taking days off when I needed days off, Like
- 29:33Speaker 1: the lead up to Boston, I took a rest day
- 29:36Speaker 1: at least every seven to ten days, full rest day,
- 29:39Speaker 1: full physiological reset, Whereas like a lot of the coaches
- 29:43Speaker 1: I've had in the past, it's you know, rest days
- 29:45Speaker 1: weren't really like on the calendar that much. So I
- 29:48Speaker 1: think rest days are super important. Making sure you're eating enough,
- 29:52Speaker 1: making sure you are regularly getting you know, your menstrual
- 29:55Speaker 1: cycle if you get one, you know, making sure your
- 29:59Speaker 1: energy levels are high, make sure you're sleeping enough, like
- 30:01Speaker 1: all those things. Like I don't think training theory is
- 30:04Speaker 1: like super revolutionary. I think most people know what they're
- 30:07Speaker 1: doing in marathon coaching wise, I think it's all the
- 30:10Speaker 1: little things that add up that make you into like
- 30:13Speaker 1: you know Jess McLain who's like dialed in everything, you know,
- 30:16Speaker 1: Like she's a perfect example of someone who has dialed
- 30:20Speaker 1: in the fueling piece really well. And I still think
- 30:22Speaker 1: I have a lot of work to do with that
- 30:24Speaker 1: in terms of finding exactly what works for me. But
- 30:27Speaker 1: it's like, yeah, it's not like she trains any differently
- 30:29Speaker 1: than a lot of people. It's just like she's dialed
- 30:32Speaker 1: in the little things that really add up.
- 30:34Speaker 2: There are so many things that are within our control
- 30:37Speaker 2: that aren't earth shattering that if you do them well,
- 30:41Speaker 2: make a massive difference. So so many people are reaching
- 30:44Speaker 2: for things like normal tech boots and red light therapy
- 30:48Speaker 2: and cold plunging and blah blah blah, but their sleep
- 30:52Speaker 2: is junk or they're not eating well. So it's like
- 30:54Speaker 2: you are in this place now where you're understanding the
- 30:57Speaker 2: importance of getting down the main building box that will
- 31:01Speaker 2: really help you get the edge as you continue on.
- 31:03Speaker 1: Yeah, that's literally been my like the number one thing
- 31:06Speaker 1: I've always said, Like there's so many other things that
- 31:12Speaker 1: you can reach for first before you go to like
- 31:14Speaker 1: the one percent that's going to help. Like, there's so
- 31:17Speaker 1: many other things that you can do to improve your
- 31:19Speaker 1: performance anyone, like so many things anyone can do to
- 31:22Speaker 1: improve performance before reaching for that you know, very very
- 31:26Speaker 1: fine line at the end. And you know, as like
- 31:29Speaker 1: as an elite you know, runners or whatever. I think
- 31:31Speaker 1: it's it's great to go for the one percent, but
- 31:33Speaker 1: it's like you better make sure that you're dialing in
- 31:36Speaker 1: the things that really like the core things and then
- 31:38Speaker 1: kind of going out and yeah, go ahead and take
- 31:41Speaker 1: do whatever you want to do to get that extra edge.
- 31:43Speaker 1: But yeah, like I've never been, you know, super into
- 31:47Speaker 1: all that stuff. I'm just kind of like, uh, I
- 31:50Speaker 1: don't know, do do what I need to do before
- 31:52Speaker 1: I I grab the extra you know, the extra rung
- 31:55Speaker 1: and the ladder.
- 31:55Speaker 2: So you're like the meat and potatoes a brand vent
- 32:00Speaker 2: because if you don't have that, the extra stuff's not
- 32:02Speaker 2: going to do.
- 32:03Speaker 1: That much for you.
- 32:04Speaker 2: So nah, it won't. I also really love and I
- 32:07Speaker 2: think it's really beautiful the way that you talk about Jess.
- 32:12Speaker 2: Talk to me a little bit about what that relationship
- 32:15Speaker 2: means to you and how having a teammate like Jess,
- 32:19Speaker 2: and not only just in this scenario obviously there are
- 32:21Speaker 2: so many of you, but helps you be a better you,
- 32:26Speaker 2: not just as an athlete.
- 32:27Speaker 1: Yeah, No, Jess is the best. I mean, I've been
- 32:30Speaker 1: texting her recently because I've been going through a little
- 32:33Speaker 1: little thing and she's just you know, she's always there
- 32:36Speaker 1: for you, And I just think, like it's just very
- 32:40Speaker 1: evident when you cross the line in front of someone,
- 32:43Speaker 1: Like I crossed the line in front of her at
- 32:45Speaker 1: the US Half Champs a couple of years ago, and
- 32:47Speaker 1: like she was as happy as she would have been
- 32:50Speaker 1: if she had won the whole thing, and I was like,
- 32:52Speaker 1: it's just kind of a testament to her character, like
- 32:54Speaker 1: finishing off the podium and still being super happy for
- 32:57Speaker 1: someone I think that's a really hard thing to achieve,
- 33:00Speaker 1: and she's got it down. Like she's very, very selfless,
- 33:04Speaker 1: and she's one of those people that truly like the
- 33:08Speaker 1: success of other people doesn't make her feel any less.
- 33:11Speaker 1: It just she just like wants everyone to do good,
- 33:14Speaker 1: and of course she wants to be the best. But
- 33:17Speaker 1: it's helped me kind of realize that like, just because
- 33:20Speaker 1: other people are doing good doesn't mean it's anything, you know,
- 33:23Speaker 1: knocking on me or anything like that. So I think
- 33:26Speaker 1: in that way, she's helped me a lot as a
- 33:27Speaker 1: person develop and she honestly is just like a big
- 33:30Speaker 1: sister to me. Like she's like, I'll text her about anything,
- 33:33Speaker 1: like I you know, I've talked to her about you
- 33:36Speaker 1: know really you know, interesting things on some runs, you
- 33:40Speaker 1: know things that you just you know, you want to
- 33:42Speaker 1: know the answers to, or like even in the business
- 33:45Speaker 1: side of running. I'll just be very blunt and be like, hey,
- 33:47Speaker 1: what is blah blah blah, And you know she'll she'll
- 33:50Speaker 1: answer to the best of her ability. But she's just
- 33:52Speaker 1: like a huge resource for me and a lot of
- 33:55Speaker 1: other people to just learn about different aspects of running
- 33:59Speaker 1: and the the business side of things and just mental
- 34:02Speaker 1: side of things. And obviously she doesn't have all the answers,
- 34:05Speaker 1: but it's fun to be able to just talk to
- 34:08Speaker 1: her freely about that stuff when she is such an
- 34:10Speaker 1: elite athlete herself.
- 34:12Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, what I'm hearing here is that this
- 34:14Speaker 2: is an unofficial meeting of the Just McLean fan club
- 34:17Speaker 2: because when I when I earlier this year, I froze
- 34:21Speaker 2: my eggs and one of the first people to text
- 34:24Speaker 2: me after I was out of my procedure was Jess McLean.
- 34:27Speaker 2: She's like, how are you doing what's going on and
- 34:31Speaker 2: just something so special and it's not Everyone is not
- 34:34Speaker 2: like this, and that's okay. I understand that as someone
- 34:37Speaker 2: who also likes to think that, I'm like, I'm going
- 34:40Speaker 2: to check in on all of my ducklings as often
- 34:42Speaker 2: as I can. Not everyone has that capacity, and that's fine.
- 34:46Speaker 2: But McLean has that capacity and it's such a beautiful
- 34:50Speaker 2: and rare thing that I can see why it makes
- 34:52Speaker 2: such a great and outstanding impact on you.
- 34:55Speaker 1: Oh yeah, even on like my parents, like my dad
- 34:58Speaker 1: especially will be like, oh, I was just doing like
- 35:01Speaker 1: you know, everyone in my family who knows Jess just
- 35:03Speaker 1: loves Jess like they think she's amazing. You can't not
- 35:07Speaker 1: like her. So she's absolutely incredible, and it's been a
- 35:11Speaker 1: huge benefit to have through like all stages of running,
- 35:14Speaker 1: even when it's going well, when it's not going well,
- 35:16Speaker 1: when there's you know, stuff going on in a relationship,
- 35:20Speaker 1: just anything you could talk to her about anything, So
- 35:22Speaker 1: it's really wonderful to have her there.
- 35:25Speaker 2: What would you say when we think about where you're
- 35:27Speaker 2: at now and where you're looking to for the rest
- 35:30Speaker 2: of the year, what's the most challenging part of your
- 35:34Speaker 2: current situation?
- 35:36Speaker 1: Like every marathon are currently is probably figuring out what
- 35:39Speaker 1: marathon are doing in the fall. So definitely been going
- 35:42Speaker 1: back and forth a little bit on that and just
- 35:45Speaker 1: trying to figure out what's going to be best for
- 35:47Speaker 1: me long term in the marathon. And like, you know,
- 35:50Speaker 1: everyone's talking about LA twenty eight, so you know, making
- 35:52Speaker 1: the Olympic team there, that's always in the back of
- 35:54Speaker 1: my head. But I'm just trying to I think the
- 35:57Speaker 1: hardest thing is making decisions today that will positively impact
- 36:01Speaker 1: my long term chances of making the team, versus making
- 36:05Speaker 1: decisions that you know, might be might feel good in
- 36:08Speaker 1: the moment, or might feel good for the next you know,
- 36:10Speaker 1: a few months or four months, five months, but maybe
- 36:13Speaker 1: aren't the best for my long term development. So I'm
- 36:17Speaker 1: always thinking about am I making the right move? And
- 36:20Speaker 1: I go back and forth quite a bit with you know,
- 36:22Speaker 1: my coach and my agent and just like bounce ideas
- 36:26Speaker 1: off their head and things like that. So I would
- 36:29Speaker 1: say that's probably just a lot of decision making. I
- 36:31Speaker 1: don't like making decisions.
- 36:32Speaker 3: So that's probably the hardest thing right now, and it's
- 36:36Speaker 3: challenging to make decisions and think beyond the right now,
- 36:39Speaker 3: to think long term to think about what's the thing
- 36:42Speaker 3: that's going to serve my future self the best exactly.
- 36:46Speaker 1: Yeah, and then it's like how much should I be
- 36:48Speaker 1: looking to the future versus staying in the present. Like
- 36:52Speaker 1: it's just it's so hard to know like where to
- 36:54Speaker 1: find that balance.
- 36:55Speaker 2: But yeah, but the words should there is like so
- 36:59Speaker 2: like I just want to like slap it away from
- 37:00Speaker 2: that conversation. It's like I should be doing this, but like,
- 37:03Speaker 2: all you can do is the best that you can
- 37:05Speaker 2: with what you have in this scenario. And so you're
- 37:07Speaker 2: equipping yourself with all the tools that help set you
- 37:10Speaker 2: up for that that helped put you in the best
- 37:13Speaker 2: place possible. Are you going to know in eighteen months
- 37:16Speaker 2: if the decision you make for the next six months
- 37:18Speaker 2: is the best decision? No, you probably won't, but that
- 37:22Speaker 2: decision will get you ultimately, so where you should be
- 37:26Speaker 2: in eighteen months from now regardless.
- 37:28Speaker 1: Yeah, No, it's so true. I mean that's how I
- 37:30Speaker 1: stumbled upon the marathon earlier, and then I would have anticipated,
- 37:33Speaker 1: you know, just like.
- 37:35Speaker 2: I got to talk a little bit about that.
- 37:36Speaker 1: Yeah, like I got I was supposed to do the
- 37:40Speaker 1: Valencia Half in October of like twenty twenty four or something.
- 37:46Speaker 1: I got like a small thing. It was like before
- 37:49Speaker 1: a before even a stress reaction. It was just like
- 37:52Speaker 1: a bunch of edema inflammation. So we like took off
- 37:55Speaker 1: three weeks and just kind of built back up. But
- 37:58Speaker 1: that opened up an opportunity to my half debut in Orlando,
- 38:03Speaker 1: and I ran really really well there, and then I
- 38:06Speaker 1: ran really well in Houston in January of twenty twenty five,
- 38:11Speaker 1: and then we started thinking, well, hey, like we didn't realize,
- 38:16Speaker 1: like this half thing was going to go so well,
- 38:18Speaker 1: why don't we think about, you know, a marathon. And like, honestly,
- 38:22Speaker 1: I don't think if I I think if I would
- 38:25Speaker 1: have gone to Valencia and maybe not had a great
- 38:27Speaker 1: day because of the traveler or whatever. Like, I don't
- 38:29Speaker 1: think I would have run a marathon in the fall
- 38:31Speaker 1: of twenty five. But because like Houston and Atlanta went
- 38:35Speaker 1: so well, I just was like, all right, let's do
- 38:38Speaker 1: a fall marathon. Let's just you know, let's rip the
- 38:40Speaker 1: band aid off because now you know, now's the time
- 38:42Speaker 1: to do it. I guess because I feel ready and
- 38:44Speaker 1: excited for it. But I just think certain things happen
- 38:47Speaker 1: when you least expect it. And sometimes in the moment
- 38:50Speaker 1: you're like, oh, this is the worst thing ever, Like
- 38:53Speaker 1: I don't want this to be happening. But you know,
- 38:55Speaker 1: other times it works out in your favor. Like even
- 38:58Speaker 1: I wanted to make the World cross Country team in
- 39:00Speaker 1: twenty twenty four and I was so fit, I was
- 39:03Speaker 1: so ready to go, and I got dinged up a
- 39:05Speaker 1: week before the race, and then I ended up running,
- 39:10Speaker 1: like focusing more on a track season, and that's when
- 39:13Speaker 1: I ran thirty one to ten in London, and then
- 39:15Speaker 1: I got my Brooks contract shortly after running thirty one
- 39:17Speaker 1: seventeen in Central Park at the Mini. So it's like
- 39:20Speaker 1: I basically got that Brooks contract because of those two races.
- 39:23Speaker 1: And I did those two races because I didn't make
- 39:25Speaker 1: the World cross Country team. So just like certain things
- 39:28Speaker 1: that happen, you're like, well, thank god I didn't make
- 39:30Speaker 1: the team because then I focused more on track and
- 39:33Speaker 1: I got a contract out of it. So I don't know,
- 39:36Speaker 1: it's just certain things you never think in the moment,
- 39:38Speaker 1: you're like, ah, this sucks. I don't care what anyone says,
- 39:40Speaker 1: but honestly, I think everything's going to happen the way
- 39:44Speaker 1: it's supposed to happen in a career like this, Like
- 39:47Speaker 1: you could take every injury as a lesson if you
- 39:50Speaker 1: if you learn from it, it's not a waste, you know.
- 39:52Speaker 1: It's definitely been something I've learned. Even in the first
- 39:55Speaker 1: two or three years of being a pro.
- 40:12Speaker 2: We were reflecting on the things that make just a
- 40:15Speaker 2: great teammate to you. But what would you say, knowing
- 40:19Speaker 2: now you've said this got me my Brooks contract, what
- 40:22Speaker 2: is it that makes you a good teammate to everyone else?
- 40:26Speaker 1: Oh? Man, I don't know. I mean I think I
- 40:29Speaker 1: make everyone laugh, to be honestly, I think we were
- 40:32Speaker 1: in we were in Seattle for a Brooks event or
- 40:35Speaker 1: a Brooks like little camp that we do a couple
- 40:37Speaker 1: times a year, and I remember Clayton. Clayton said to me,
- 40:41Speaker 1: you know you're just such a breath of fresh air,
- 40:43Speaker 1: Like you're just really funny. And I was like, oh,
- 40:45Speaker 1: thank you. Like and just like to know I'm making
- 40:49Speaker 1: people laugh and making their day maybe a little bit
- 40:51Speaker 1: better or like something you know, just may maybe a
- 40:54Speaker 1: little bit more lighthearted makes me really happy. And you know,
- 40:59Speaker 1: I just when she saw me, She's like, I'm just
- 41:01Speaker 1: so happy to see you and I was like, oh,
- 41:03Speaker 1: that's so sweet. I don't know. I think I'm a
- 41:06Speaker 1: little bit younger than everyone, so I'm a little bit
- 41:08Speaker 1: more like immature a lot of the time, but like
- 41:11Speaker 1: in a good way, you know. I think I bring
- 41:13Speaker 1: levity to a lot of like situations, and or at
- 41:16Speaker 1: least I try to so. And I always check up
- 41:19Speaker 1: with my teammates, you know. Obviously some of them are
- 41:21Speaker 1: going through a really rough time, so just checking up
- 41:24Speaker 1: on them and making sure everyone's okay. And because I
- 41:27Speaker 1: think at the end of the day, we none of
- 41:29Speaker 1: us care really about how each other performs. Of course,
- 41:32Speaker 1: we love when they you know, when each other performs well,
- 41:35Speaker 1: but we just want to make sure everyone's okay, you know.
- 41:37Speaker 1: So that's the biggest thing.
- 41:39Speaker 2: Yeah, And it's really cool that you are a part
- 41:43Speaker 2: of a team that genuinely feels that way, that genuinely
- 41:46Speaker 2: lifts one another up. Do you feel a little conflicted
- 41:50Speaker 2: at times that the team is so spread out for
- 41:53Speaker 2: the most part, or how do you feel that you
- 41:56Speaker 2: can make it work while being in all these different places?
- 41:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, of course, I think it would be
- 42:01Speaker 1: like the coolest thing ever if we could see each
- 42:03Speaker 1: other more often. I just everyone's got their own thing,
- 42:07Speaker 1: going their own families, you know, So it's just hard.
- 42:10Speaker 1: But I do, like I love getting together, you know,
- 42:13Speaker 1: two three times a year for the camps and stuff,
- 42:16Speaker 1: and then just seeing each other at races is like
- 42:18Speaker 1: is amazing. Like we were a lot of us were
- 42:20Speaker 1: in Boston and that was just so much fun, and
- 42:23Speaker 1: it just it really does feel like a team, even
- 42:25Speaker 1: though we don't train together. When we see each other,
- 42:27Speaker 1: it's just like, oh yeah, like we're teammates, you know.
- 42:30Speaker 1: So I just think it's a huge advantage to have
- 42:33Speaker 1: going into big marathons to know that you have other
- 42:36Speaker 1: people alongside you that actually feel like teammates for sure.
- 42:40Speaker 2: You mentioned earlier that it's also really helpful having a
- 42:44Speaker 2: teammate who you can talk to about the business side
- 42:47Speaker 2: of things. What would you say has been the most
- 42:50Speaker 2: challenging part of that aspect of being a pro for.
- 42:53Speaker 1: You, Yeah, I think like even like outside of the
- 42:57Speaker 1: Brooks space, like I've had a lot of of other
- 43:01Speaker 1: athletes who have been in the sport for a lot
- 43:03Speaker 1: longer who have kind of given me the rundown of
- 43:06Speaker 1: things because it's hard to know like what you're worth
- 43:08Speaker 1: as an athlete, especially when it comes to things like
- 43:11Speaker 1: appearance fees, and of course, like your agent's going to
- 43:14Speaker 1: do everything they can to get you the best appearance
- 43:16Speaker 1: fee that you that you can get, but it's sometimes
- 43:19Speaker 1: frustrating to not know. I guess what other people are
- 43:23Speaker 1: getting who have similar times to you, or like how
- 43:26Speaker 1: much does social media really play a factor in it?
- 43:29Speaker 2: Things like that about that aspect of it.
- 43:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, because I feel like people are always
- 43:34Speaker 1: on me about like, oh, you need to post more,
- 43:37Speaker 1: you need to do this more. And I feel like
- 43:39Speaker 1: I post when it's relevant. But I have never really
- 43:42Speaker 1: been someone that just posts daily about my life. And
- 43:45Speaker 1: I don't know if I should be doing that. Maybe
- 43:47Speaker 1: I should, maybe people want to know, but I don't know.
- 43:50Speaker 1: It's it's hard to know if your worth is like
- 43:53Speaker 1: based off of the times that you've run, or if
- 43:55Speaker 1: it's based off of like how much traction you can
- 43:59Speaker 1: get and how much you know, attention you can pull
- 44:01Speaker 1: in for a race. So that's that's tricky. And I
- 44:04Speaker 1: do think social media is probably more heavily you know,
- 44:10Speaker 1: I guess weighed now than it used to be in
- 44:12Speaker 1: the past. And that's fine, Like I'm not hating on
- 44:14Speaker 1: that or anything. I think it's important too, and like,
- 44:17Speaker 1: of course, like the more presence you have on social media,
- 44:20Speaker 1: that probably the better deals you're going to get. But
- 44:22Speaker 1: it's hard because it sometimes just feels like it's very
- 44:25Speaker 1: select people that start getting all like all these followers
- 44:28Speaker 1: and stuff, and it's like I just don't know how
- 44:31Speaker 1: to crack the code to it.
- 44:32Speaker 2: But it's it's tricky. I also, I mean it's it's
- 44:36Speaker 2: funny because again, like we're shoulding ourselves here, right, So
- 44:40Speaker 2: it's like, should I be posting more on social media?
- 44:42Speaker 2: It's like, well, I don't know. It just depends what
- 44:45Speaker 2: the goal is. It just depends what you want to
- 44:48Speaker 2: put out into the world and where your personal priorities
- 44:51Speaker 2: are at, and also what feels good. I loved when
- 44:55Speaker 2: you were talking about gearing up for the marathon in
- 44:58Speaker 2: Boston and you had both a real excellent training cycle
- 45:01Speaker 2: in terms of your performance and it was fun, right,
- 45:05Speaker 2: And so it's like you're in this place where you're
- 45:07Speaker 2: understanding the benefit of both. So whether or not you
- 45:10Speaker 2: should post more on social media, I don't know. Is
- 45:12Speaker 2: the both there?
- 45:13Speaker 1: Yeah, No, it's true. I like I think I know
- 45:17Speaker 1: someone obviously. Who does it really good? Is Clayton, right,
- 45:20Speaker 1: Like we talked about that when we were at camp.
- 45:22Speaker 1: It's like he's just, you know, he's fully into it
- 45:25Speaker 1: and he's like making something out of it. And it's
- 45:27Speaker 1: funny because I would never think of myself as like, no,
- 45:31Speaker 1: I always say this, like because my boyfriends always like, oh,
- 45:33Speaker 1: you should make stuff like that. And I was like, no,
- 45:34Speaker 1: one wants to see me, and he's like, yeah, they do,
- 45:36Speaker 1: and it's like, well, I was like, well they want
- 45:39Speaker 1: to see Clayton obviously. But I think you never I
- 45:42Speaker 1: think to get to the point that I'm talking about,
- 45:44Speaker 1: you just have to do it. And so a lot
- 45:46Speaker 1: of that is just on me. You just have to
- 45:48Speaker 1: do it. And you know, I talked to Jess about
- 45:50Speaker 1: it too, and she just she just does it, and
- 45:53Speaker 1: like it's like, oh, well, if it gets views, it
- 45:55Speaker 1: gets views. If it doesn't, that's fine too. But I
- 45:58Speaker 1: think there's a large part of it that's just kind
- 46:00Speaker 1: of putting yourself out there. And I think I just
- 46:03Speaker 1: struggle with that a little bit internally because I don't
- 46:07Speaker 1: like being vulnerable in that way, you know, because it
- 46:09Speaker 1: is a little bit of vulnerable to like post yourself
- 46:11Speaker 1: out there and then people have opinions of you, and
- 46:14Speaker 1: I think that's something I just have to get over
- 46:16Speaker 1: because I have a lot of respect for people who
- 46:18Speaker 1: are just like constantly like updating, because I'm like, oh,
- 46:21Speaker 1: I love to see it, like I want to see
- 46:22Speaker 1: what you're doing. But then of course for me, I'm like, oh, no,
- 46:25Speaker 1: one wants to see that. But it's like.
- 46:29Speaker 2: To be around you for much more time because you're
- 46:32Speaker 2: so funny.
- 46:33Speaker 1: Oh, thank you, thank you.
- 46:36Speaker 2: We need more vestry funny.
- 46:39Speaker 1: Yes, I know I should start like a funny account
- 46:41Speaker 1: or something. No, who's account I've been loving is Gabby Henman.
- 46:45Speaker 1: I don't know if you follow her.
- 46:46Speaker 2: She's so funny.
- 46:48Speaker 1: She's hilarious. That's so I'm like, I should do that.
- 46:51Speaker 1: She's so funny.
- 46:54Speaker 2: Okay, so we're picking what raise is best for us
- 46:57Speaker 2: in the fall. I'm not giving you any unfolicited but
- 47:00Speaker 2: it sounds to me like maybe it's time that Amanda
- 47:02Speaker 2: tries to run a flat marathon flat marathon.
- 47:06Speaker 1: Oh boy, oh boy.
- 47:07Speaker 2: Okay, so there's maybe there's a Chicago in your future.
- 47:11Speaker 2: We will find out, we will find out. We'll find out.
- 47:14Speaker 2: But in the meantime, when you think about the rest
- 47:18Speaker 2: of summer, what are you looking forward to? What's on
- 47:20Speaker 2: your bucket list?
- 47:21Speaker 1: Oh gosh, yeah, I mean not too much. Just kind
- 47:25Speaker 1: of getting back into training a little bit. Had a
- 47:27Speaker 1: little bit of a setback there before the mini, and
- 47:30Speaker 1: just kind of slowly, very slowly building back from what
- 47:33Speaker 1: I had going on. So just kind of looking forward
- 47:36Speaker 1: to getting back into full training again, to be honest,
- 47:39Speaker 1: because you never never, never know how much you miss
- 47:41Speaker 1: it until it's taken away from you. So looking forward
- 47:44Speaker 1: to getting back into it and just really gearing up
- 47:48Speaker 1: for the marathon and you know, spending time with family
- 47:50Speaker 1: and yeah, that's pretty much it.
- 47:54Speaker 2: Those that were out of the loop, tell them what
- 47:56Speaker 2: you had going on before the mini.
- 47:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I just had a little, h little pain going
- 48:01Speaker 1: on and decided it wasn't a good idea. My coach
- 48:06Speaker 1: told me I couldn't run before the mini. So, you know,
- 48:09Speaker 1: just been the last three weeks, We've just been being
- 48:12Speaker 1: super super cautious about kind of taking this as like
- 48:17Speaker 1: a sign that hey, maybe my body just needed some
- 48:19Speaker 1: time to like really settle after the marathon, and I'm
- 48:23Speaker 1: just kind of taking it as a positive of like
- 48:26Speaker 1: the more you know healthy I get now, the the
- 48:29Speaker 1: better my chances are to have a really successful marathon build.
- 48:32Speaker 1: So we have so much time before the marathon too,
- 48:34Speaker 1: that it's like there's really no rush getting back into things.
- 48:37Speaker 1: But yeah, just like little things happen. I think a
- 48:40Speaker 1: lot of it was, to be honest, like two marathons
- 48:43Speaker 1: in a row for my you know, like two very
- 48:46Speaker 1: hard marathons at that in a row. Just maybe I
- 48:49Speaker 1: didn't have all the resources I could have for my body,
- 48:53Speaker 1: just like needing a little bit more, you know, muscle
- 48:56Speaker 1: mass on me or something just to handle all that
- 48:58Speaker 1: mileage and the pound from Boston too. So yeah, I'm
- 49:02Speaker 1: just trying to figure that out before I get into
- 49:04Speaker 1: my next big build.
- 49:05Speaker 2: So you're learning. I mean again two marathons. I'm still learning,
- 49:11Speaker 2: and I obviously do not run like you do on
- 49:14Speaker 2: that type of level. But fifteen in and I'm like,
- 49:17Speaker 2: I have no idea half the time what I'm doing.
- 49:19Speaker 2: I try to show up to the New York City
- 49:22Speaker 2: Marathon starting line with my bag to check they don't
- 49:25Speaker 2: check bags at the beginning of the New York City
- 49:26Speaker 2: Marathon starting line. I'd run it like six times before,
- 49:29Speaker 2: and I got there and I was like, what do
- 49:31Speaker 2: you mean there's nowhere to put this?
- 49:32Speaker 1: Yeah? No, so you just lost all of it.
- 49:35Speaker 2: It's a long story. I miraculously got this bag back.
- 49:38Speaker 2: I'll tell you offline. But it was wild.
- 49:41Speaker 1: Really, Oh my god, that sounds like a nightmare.
- 49:44Speaker 2: It was wild. Uh okay, right now, someone comes to
- 49:47Speaker 2: your Instagram page, they see Amanda Vestry, a pro runner
- 49:51Speaker 2: for Brooks. But when you look in the mirror, Amanda,
- 49:54Speaker 2: what is it that you see looking back at you?
- 49:57Speaker 1: Oh gosh. Yeah. I definitely don't just think a pro
- 50:02Speaker 1: runner by any means, you know, I'm I don't know.
- 50:07Speaker 1: I am a daughter and I try to be I
- 50:11Speaker 1: try to be a really good family member to everyone
- 50:14Speaker 1: in my family and try to be a good girlfriend.
- 50:18Speaker 1: I definitely see myself as an athlete more than a runner,
- 50:21Speaker 1: like in a weird way, like I love athletics. I
- 50:24Speaker 1: just I love being active, and like I love trying
- 50:27Speaker 1: different things. I've been really into biking recently and that's
- 50:31Speaker 1: been a lot of fun. So yeah, I think I'm
- 50:33Speaker 1: a bunch of different things. I don't think I think
- 50:35Speaker 1: everyone's got so many different hats that they wear, you know,
- 50:38Speaker 1: just try to be more than just a runner for sure.
- 50:41Speaker 2: Are you on a road bike out there?
- 50:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm on a road bike. Yeah. It's crazy though,
- 50:46Speaker 1: because in Florida it's storms every day. I had like
- 50:48Speaker 1: three or four PM so I actually got blown off
- 50:51Speaker 1: my bike. The other day, I got into a little
- 50:54Speaker 1: bit of a situation. The wind just totally took me
- 50:57Speaker 1: off the bike and I was like, well, that's not good.
- 51:00Speaker 1: So I was stranded. I had to call my dad
- 51:03Speaker 1: to come pick me up. And I was getting just
- 51:05Speaker 1: pelted in the face with wind, like got like forty
- 51:07Speaker 1: mile an hour gusts of wind. It was just blowing
- 51:10Speaker 1: me over. I was like, this is crazy. I felt
- 51:12Speaker 1: like I was in like a war zone. It was awful.
- 51:15Speaker 1: But yeah, road biking has been really fun though. Other
- 51:17Speaker 1: than that, just like learning to get, you know, better
- 51:19Speaker 1: at other things other than running. It's really fun and
- 51:22Speaker 1: kind of incorporating a lot more cross training into my
- 51:25Speaker 1: running has been cool too.
- 51:26Speaker 2: And the fitness that biking requires is yes, complimentary to running,
- 51:31Speaker 2: but it's so different to be bike fit versus being
- 51:35Speaker 2: run fit.
- 51:36Speaker 1: Yeah, Like what's interesting because you know, I wear the
- 51:38Speaker 1: heart rate monitor on my arm for all my runs,
- 51:41Speaker 1: but I was wearing it for a cross training as well,
- 51:44Speaker 1: and I remember thinking like, oh, I on the bike,
- 51:47Speaker 1: I'm just barely gonna be able to get my heart
- 51:48Speaker 1: rate up. No, first time I went on a road bike,
- 51:52Speaker 1: I kid you not, my heart rate was average of
- 51:54Speaker 1: like one sixty five, which it hardly gets to that
- 51:57Speaker 1: average and hard workouts for me. So it's like, bike
- 52:00Speaker 1: fitness is crazy, Like so much respect to bikers. I
- 52:03Speaker 1: don't know how they do it. It's really hard.
- 52:06Speaker 2: And it's time consuming.
- 52:08Speaker 1: Yes, yes, so time consuming. Like, yeah, you're you're doing
- 52:11Speaker 1: like a minimum of ninety minutes. If it's like your
- 52:13Speaker 1: main thing for the day, You're doing like a minimum
- 52:16Speaker 1: ninety minute ride, and it's like wow. In running, it's like,
- 52:19Speaker 1: you know, I'm doing an hour seventy five minutes and
- 52:21Speaker 1: I'm good to go, you know. So it's crazy, it's crazy.
- 52:26Speaker 2: Well, right now, you have an opportunity, Amanda, before I
- 52:29Speaker 2: let you go, to offer yourself a piece of advice.
- 52:33Speaker 2: Let's go back again to that place you were in
- 52:35Speaker 2: post Boston, noticeably being a little bit critical of your
- 52:39Speaker 2: performance while also performing the best you've ever done in
- 52:42Speaker 2: the event. Knowing what you know now, Amanda, what advice
- 52:46Speaker 2: would you give to yourself back in April during that
- 52:49Speaker 2: Hurtle moment.
- 52:51Speaker 1: I would say, dude, don't be so hard on yourself.
- 52:55Speaker 1: You just ran a pr at the Boston Marathon on
- 52:57Speaker 1: a really hard course. Enjoy it, That's what I would say.
- 53:01Speaker 2: Enjoy it. Remember when you wanted what you have now.
- 53:05Speaker 2: Amanda Vestry for Hurdle, thank you so much for your
- 53:08Speaker 2: time today. For those that want to follow along with you,
- 53:10Speaker 2: keep up with you. Plug the social where do they go?
- 53:13Speaker 1: Yeah? Just follow me on Instagram a underscore Vestry and
- 53:17Speaker 1: that's pretty much all the social media I used to
- 53:19Speaker 1: be honest, but I'll post more on there if you

- 53:24Speaker 2: Oh see, now we have an incentive at Hurdle Podcast
