Latest / Gimbal Podcast / Gary Vee's Videographer Reveals The Insane Schedule Behind DailyVee.
Transcript
- 0:00What was your game plan going into working with him?
- 0:02His calendar was ever moving.
- 0:04You could never be on top of it.
- 0:05Like, whatever was scheduled last night,
- 0:06changed by the morning.
- 0:07If you had to build DailyVee from scratch again today,
- 0:10what would be your playbook?
- 0:11It's a great question, because, uh...
- 0:14My guess today is Jason Morena.
- 0:16He spent five years working as Gary Vaynerchuk's
- 0:19camera operator and an extra couple years working
- 0:22as head of content for Mike Posner.
- 0:24This is a great interview.
- 0:25Please stick around, I hope you enjoy.
- 0:27All right, Jason, what was a moment in time
- 0:30when you were working for Gary when you realized
- 0:33that he is the real deal, that he's everything
- 0:35he looks and says he is on YouTube?
- 0:38I mean, there's a lot of moments.
- 0:40Gary's misunderstood.
- 0:41Some people just think he's a motivational speaker,
- 0:43he's just his keynote, he just makes content.
- 0:45Truthfully, he's running seven meaningful businesses.
- 0:48VaynerMedia is a 3,000 person global agency.
- 0:52And so that's what he's doing like most of his time.
- 0:54And so, being behind the scenes,
- 0:56so I think for context, I was a videographer.
- 0:58He hired me in 2018.
- 0:59I had been already shooting log style content
- 1:02with sort of this goal in mind of like,
- 1:04I wanna work for this guy.
- 1:05By a little luck and probably a lot of grinding,
- 1:07I got there.
- 1:08The videographers every day would get a text
- 1:10with all the meetings that were greenlit
- 1:12and all the texts that were in greenlit to film.
- 1:15And Gary's calendar is not like many others.
- 1:17It's five minute meetings back to back from 70m to 11pm.
- 1:20I'm this young videographer, you realize
- 1:21that this guy is the real deal.
- 1:23He is like actively having 50 meetings every day.
- 1:26And now I'm like in the behind the scenes of it.
- 1:28And we're trying to figure out along the way,
- 1:29like what is something that's not maybe client-related
- 1:32that we could film and then something that is like
- 1:35worth recording for the vlog or content.
- 1:38But I think to go back to your question,
- 1:39I mean, there's so many, like when TikTok was just turned
- 1:43from musically into it, like this platform
- 1:46that was becoming something, Gary was like on it
- 1:49before anyone on the team.
- 1:50We're a 30% team.
- 1:51We're well aware of like that it's becoming popular.
- 1:54And this is before COVID, this is 2019.
- 1:57And I remember he told us a few times.
- 1:59He's like, hey, like we need to be serious
- 2:00about this platform.
- 2:01And we kind of just kept what we were doing.
- 2:03We had a lot already going on between like YouTube
- 2:05and Insta and everything that we're hacking.
- 2:06And then it got to a point where Gary was like,
- 2:08hey, we're gonna have to like reconsolidate the team
- 2:10and we don't figure this out.
- 2:11It was like, hey, like we need to like really go hard
- 2:13on this and he was right.
- 2:14And like I think that like speaks to,
- 2:16I don't use the word like futurist,
- 2:17but he knows like when something's like about
- 2:19to become something, he was right.
- 2:20We built a small little pocket on the team, on team Gary.
- 2:24And you know, all credits in my buddy Caleb Ralston
- 2:26and obviously the support of the team around him
- 2:29to build out his TikTok from like zero to,
- 2:32I think it was like three million in like six months.
- 2:33And so, and obviously that platform
- 2:35has been on to a big deal.
- 2:36And so he has good foresight.
- 2:38He knows what's gonna pop off.
- 2:39How did you build up your TikTok so fast?
- 2:42We were making clips way differently.
- 2:45Like so whatever was going on Instagram,
- 2:47it was being produced way different for TikTok.
- 2:49Meaning the caption style is a little bit different.
- 2:50We're like, this is back when like the songs really matter.
- 2:53So it's like, okay, like there's this like,
- 2:54sort of like viral trending song.
- 2:56Like how can we integrate Gary into this?
- 2:58And so it's like being like very intentional.
- 3:00Volume was like a big deal.
- 3:01Like we were pumping four or five clips a day at that point.
- 3:04And it was a different style of content.
- 3:05It was a little bit more meme-y.
- 3:06It was a little bit more funny.
- 3:07It was like a different energy.
- 3:08Like Instagram and YouTube.
- 3:09I mean, YouTube were posting like these hour long
- 3:11four D's consulting sessions.
- 3:13And it was super interesting because like I would
- 3:16fall Gary around and he would get stopped
- 3:18at airports all the time.
- 3:19And it was usually like between, you know, 25 and 35.
- 3:22And I remember in 2021 the like we stepped outside
- 3:27of like Ed Week and these like 13 year old kids
- 3:30that I think was like school was like letting out.
- 3:32And they like, oh, they're like Gary Vee.
- 3:34Like from TikTok.
- 3:35And that was like, whoa, like it's actually like,
- 3:36it's happening.
- 3:38And it might have been earlier.
- 3:38It might have been like before COVID.
- 3:40I'm like trying to figure out the timeline,
- 3:41but that was the first moment where I was like,
- 3:42wow, like we're building a whole different fan base now.
- 3:45Can you talk about the whole flow of the content?
- 3:49Yeah, definitely.
- 3:50YouTube for the most part.
- 3:52And I think they're starting to be more intentional now,
- 3:54meaning they're coming up with a concept
- 3:56and they're filming that direct concept.
- 3:58That's happening a little bit more now.
- 3:59Back in the day, we didn't do that.
- 4:02It was all the document, don't create.
- 4:04And so our roles of videographers
- 4:06were capturing the full day.
- 4:08And so that's going to become a vlog
- 4:09and one and part of that might be the keynote.
- 4:11It's that might be a separate YouTube video.
- 4:13And yes, there might be a micro moment in there
- 4:15for TikTok that we're going to end up
- 4:17clipping and a lot of clips came out that way.
- 4:19But I would say TikTok was the first platform
- 4:21where the team and Gary started
- 4:23being very intentional in the platform.
- 4:25Caleb would come up with a really good idea,
- 4:26try and get them between meetings.
- 4:28Because literally that's what we had to do.
- 4:30Gary be in a meeting.
- 4:30We knew the meeting be ending in five minutes.
- 4:32He might step out.
- 4:33And then he'd be like, as he's walking
- 4:35to another boardroom at VaynerMedia,
- 4:37he'd be like, hey Gary, I have this concept.
- 4:38Can you just answer this question?
- 4:40And then like, boom, Caleb would be filming on his iPhone
- 4:42that thing.
- 4:43Most of the stuff that we were filming
- 4:44was being repackaged for long form or Instagram.
- 4:48TikTok felt like one of the first platforms
- 4:50where we were like, dedicatedly making content for.
- 4:52Jason, I want to grill you on what a day in a life looked like.
- 4:57Working for Gary V while he was doing his daily vlogs.
- 5:01Tell me what the start of your day looked like.
- 5:04Tell me about everybody that was involved
- 5:05and walk me through what a standard day looked like.
- 5:08I had to wake up very early.
- 5:09It was like seven o'clock.
- 5:10And mind you, I'm in my early 20s.
- 5:13Maybe I was adding late that morning,
- 5:14or like late that past night,
- 5:16probably got like four or five hours of sleep,
- 5:17wake up like, oh wow.
- 5:19Like I have to go get to Gary in the city
- 5:21and we're gonna go to Rutgers College.
- 5:23He's doing keynote there.
- 5:24Then we're gonna head back into VaynerMedia.
- 5:26I remember that morning very specifically
- 5:27because the Lincoln tunnel I was living in New Jersey
- 5:29was like a mess.
- 5:31And I'm just stressing out
- 5:32because it's like you don't like miss the bus
- 5:35of like starting your day with Gary
- 5:36because then like the whole vlog's kind of ruined.
- 5:38I was stuck in traffic,
- 5:39I was texting Gary's driver and I was like,
- 5:41hey, like I'm gonna be out of the tunnel
- 5:43hopefully in like 40 minutes.
- 5:44Long story short, he didn't intercept me and picked me up.
- 5:47And the start of that day, like, you know,
- 5:49was a car ride.
- 5:50And in that car ride, Gary is not just like sitting there
- 5:53like doing nothing.
- 5:54He has like 14 phone calls.
- 5:55And in between that, if he doesn't have a phone call,
- 5:57he's like usually scrolling on like Twitter.
- 6:00And that's usually the moment
- 6:01where like the videographer
- 6:03for like training this way.
- 6:04That's when like it's a good time
- 6:05to ask him questions.
- 6:06And so, you know, shout out to Caleb Ralston.
- 6:09You know, he was a good mentor.
- 6:11He'd be like always have questions ready.
- 6:12And he was right because like Gary would end a phone call,
- 6:15scroll on Twitter and be like, hey, Gary,
- 6:17why should leaders have more empathy?
- 6:18Boom, that might be like another clip
- 6:19that like lived on TikTok, Instagram, whatever.
- 6:22And so that was like the morning ride.
- 6:23And I remember that morning we got to Rutgers.
- 6:26He had a keynote with the football players.
- 6:28And that was more like Gary Vee
- 6:29and like more leaning into the speaker that he is,
- 6:32not like the business person.
- 6:34Right from that, it was right back to Hudson Yards.
- 6:37And basically him and his office
- 6:38for about 10 hours straight.
- 6:40It would be meeting with the CMO, you know,
- 6:43VaynerMedia, it might be meeting with like Zach Nadler,
- 6:45who's like the head of like VaynerSpeakers
- 6:47and they're talking about like that part of his company.
- 6:48Maybe his brother's coming in,
- 6:50his brother runs VaynerSports.
- 6:52And so there's just like a collection under VaynerX
- 6:55that he was running.
- 6:56And so, you know, my job was to stay there
- 6:58and then keep on track
- 6:59because like not all those meetings
- 7:00were something we could record.
- 7:02And so sometimes I'd be like directly in the office
- 7:04because maybe he is having a podcast.
- 7:06Like maybe Neil DeCraz Tyson is coming in, like he did.
- 7:08And we would record that interaction
- 7:10and that would become maybe a standalone YouTube video,
- 7:13maybe some clips.
- 7:14And then when it wasn't a meeting,
- 7:16we would either just like stand outside of his office
- 7:18if it was like a quick 20 minutes,
- 7:20just run some B-roll.
- 7:21But then other times it would be like, okay, cool.
- 7:22Like we have two hours, let's just prop up the cameras,
- 7:24run a time lapse, go edit some stuff.
- 7:26But then it was always like nerve-wracking
- 7:27because like you're sitting there editing
- 7:29and then he'll just like bust out of the office,
- 7:30like he kind of like breaks the schedule
- 7:31and it's like where's he going?
- 7:32What's happening?
- 7:33And I'm like, and I'm like his EA is like,
- 7:34oh yeah, he's got this like, he's like taking a car ride,
- 7:36like just like go with him.
- 7:37And I'm like, okay, and they like grabbed a camera
- 7:39and then you're like, you know,
- 7:40figuring out like what your day looks like.
- 7:42And so a lot of times it was a lot of moving parts
- 7:44in being his videographer.
- 7:45You're kind of like his on the ground admin.
- 7:47And so like you have to keep track of his bag
- 7:49and make sure you knew like where the car was gonna be.
- 7:51And so I had a lot of learning lessons,
- 7:53like definitely like a lot of like, you know,
- 7:55missteps in starting that position
- 7:57where like I didn't realize like
- 7:59I'm more than just the camera guy who's just standing there.
- 8:01It sounds like from the crack of dawn,
- 8:02you gotta be ready because if you're not on Gary's wavelength,
- 8:07you're already behind on that day's video.
- 8:10So your day starts at seven.
- 8:11You mentioned somebody contacts you
- 8:13and says what the schedule looks like.
- 8:15Yeah, Gary's team is split up between EAs,
- 8:18which is like assistance, scheduling,
- 8:20and also helping with videographers understand
- 8:22like what they should do in that day.
- 8:24And then there's the creative team,
- 8:25there might be like designers, videographers, editors,
- 8:27and there's strategists, writers.
- 8:29But yeah, so like in the morning,
- 8:31usually the night before ideally,
- 8:32you'd have like a good game plan of what that looked like.
- 8:34And we did get better over time of like color coding is calendar.
- 8:37So you'd know like, okay, like we're not gonna hit these meetings.
- 8:40But his calendar was ever moving.
- 8:42And so like you could never be on top of it.
- 8:44Like whatever was scheduled last night changed by the morning.
- 8:46And so it was like a lot of moving parts.
- 8:47And yeah, there was definitely a lot of times
- 8:48where it's like, why are you here?
- 8:50You can't film this.
- 8:51Like you just took this like our car ride
- 8:53and like you could have been editing.
- 8:54And it's like, you're right.
- 8:56And that just is like a nature of it.
- 8:58Are you responsible for cutting the day that you filmed as well?
- 9:02Like do you work up until, I don't know, a certain time of day
- 9:05and then it becomes editing time
- 9:06and you got to turn around everything you just filmed?
- 9:09It's variable.
- 9:10Most days, like the ideal case was, if you shot it,
- 9:14it's best that you edit it
- 9:15because you have like all the context
- 9:17of like what the footage was.
- 9:18But that definitely wasn't always the case
- 9:19because David Rock who's like Gary's original videographer.
- 9:22Yeah, yeah.
- 9:23He's the man.
- 9:24I love that guy.
- 9:25He inspired me to like have the sort of career
- 9:28that I have now which we can get into.
- 9:29But he would spend a lot of time traveling with Gary.
- 9:32And so it wasn't always the case where he'd be editing his footage.
- 9:35For the most part, he was shooting.
- 9:37And so then a lot of that footage
- 9:38would land on Kale Browston, me,
- 9:41Dustin Lee, other video editors along the way.
- 9:44And we got better at making better notes.
- 9:46And Deerock was actually really smart.
- 9:49It's a very like simple hack.
- 9:50But like while filming, he would just take a photo
- 9:53using Instagram of his screen
- 9:55because you could see the timestamp
- 9:56and he would just write, this was a good moment.
- 9:58Or he'd write like a sound bite from it.
- 10:00And then just save that photo.
- 10:01And then end of the day,
- 10:02he would have about like 10 screenshots
- 10:04and you'd have the timestamp.
- 10:05And it was like a little bit better than having nothing.
- 10:08Because like, you know, these cameras,
- 10:09there's no way to like just pit a button
- 10:11and like timestamp what you're at,
- 10:12especially when you're like moving up the speed
- 10:14and recording the amount we are.
- 10:15And so like that was like a little bit of a hack.
- 10:17And so then it ended the day, we'd use like fire emojis.
- 10:20It'd be like one fire emoji
- 10:21until like three fire emojis of like how good the moment was.
- 10:23That would help the editor in the vlog
- 10:25because then you'd be like,
- 10:26there's probably a moment I want to use
- 10:27but also like the Instagram editor would be like,
- 10:28okay, of this whole day seems like we have like four
- 10:31really good moments.
- 10:32I mean, that's so helpful.
- 10:33Like when I grew up as an editor in this industry, right?
- 10:36That was my starting points as well.
- 10:38And I would always tell the creators
- 10:39that I was working for like film your thing.
- 10:41And then if you have some kind of reaction
- 10:42or something good going on,
- 10:43like turn the camera on yourself
- 10:45or like if you're a camera operator
- 10:47and you're observing something good,
- 10:48turn on yourself and just say like,
- 10:50oh, that was a good moment or something like that
- 10:51because then in the edit,
- 10:52that's where I'm going to start my search
- 10:54for the good content, right?
- 10:55Like if you're in the moment,
- 10:56even with this show, we have an incredible editor
- 10:58but after taping this episode,
- 11:00the next thing is to do like a little message
- 11:03at the end being like, okay, Ken,
- 11:04there was some really good moments up front,
- 11:06there was some good moments at the end,
- 11:07there's a part in the middle you can trim out,
- 11:09you know, lead with this question
- 11:10because you're writing the moment
- 11:11and as you're experiencing it,
- 11:13there's no better judgment of taste right then and there.
- 11:16So it really helps the editor
- 11:17who might not actually be in the moment recording it.
- 11:20There's nowhere a good starting point is.
- 11:22Yeah, Dustin Lee, who's like an amazing part of Gary's growth,
- 11:26his hack was just putting his hand in front of the camera.
- 11:28At one point it was like just him and like another editor,
- 11:31the team had, I think, had condensed a little bit
- 11:33and it's a little bit easier.
- 11:34Like if you're like, you know, in a crowd of Gary,
- 11:36there's no ticking out your phone
- 11:38and like taking a picture.
- 11:39So he just like throw the hand,
- 11:40throw the five, the Gary be five up
- 11:42and that was his way of locking like all his moments.
- 11:45And so like you just find what works
- 11:47and those little hooks like mattered
- 11:48because like the next day you're recording
- 11:50the next day and so then like all that footage get lost
- 11:52and even though Gary had like a robust team,
- 11:54like I got lucky in the sense that they caught wind
- 11:57of like my name during a time where they were like
- 12:00two or three weeks backlogged on footage
- 12:02and there was no way for them to with the team they had
- 12:04get to like a point where like they were current.
- 12:07And I was part of the team that like got them current again
- 12:09and it's like super valuable like why they brought me
- 12:12a lot of that point.
- 12:13Everyone thinks they have it,
- 12:14like these teams have it figured out they do
- 12:16but there's like, there's still a lot of missteps going on.
- 12:18Like organization could always be better.
- 12:20Let's talk about that a little bit.
- 12:21I'm curious like how you dealt with crises.
- 12:25Like maybe you had a big day of shooting
- 12:26and it actually there wasn't a lot going on
- 12:28or maybe you lost media.
- 12:30How did you solve those problems?
- 12:32We used to call them like Gary V storms
- 12:34which is actually probably the complete opposite.
- 12:36It was when Gary would sort of like flood the group chat
- 12:38with ideas and things that need to get done
- 12:40and all those things would get done
- 12:42but we call it a storm because like it's like
- 12:44we already have a lot going on
- 12:45and now we need to like really like make sure
- 12:48like all these things are dialed
- 12:49and we can like prioritize what's right.
- 12:50Totally separate thing.
- 12:51I guess in crises moments, I mean nothing critical though.
- 12:55Nothing where like...
- 12:56Like you never missed a day or anything?
- 12:58No, nothing.
- 12:59No, I mean there was days that missed.
- 13:00I mean, I don't like throw DRock onto the bus
- 13:03but I know in his first and on the international trip
- 13:05he missed the plane.
- 13:06So like that was it.
- 13:08You know, that's a crisis moment, you know.
- 13:10But...
- 13:11He has a thousand more wins than he does for a single person.
- 13:14DRock has a thousand more wins.
- 13:15He's a legend in the space.
- 13:17I remember really admiring him
- 13:19and appreciating him when I was kind of on my come up as well.
- 13:21So yeah, that's...
- 13:23Yeah.
- 13:23No, I mean like it's like no one can bat
- 13:27a perfect seed season or whatever.
- 13:29It's like so much respect for David
- 13:31because he took on so much of the weight
- 13:33in the beginning when there was no team.
- 13:35Like it was like filming all day
- 13:36and then like making the daily day at night
- 13:39and then at one point like Tyler Babin came in
- 13:41and was like his partner in crime and doing that.
- 13:43But even then like two people doing that is ridiculous.
- 13:45That team grew to like, like I said, 30 people.
- 13:47And so yeah, I just always had like so much respect
- 13:49for like what he did.
- 13:50And I lived a little bit of it, you know,
- 13:52prior to working for Gary, you know,
- 13:54I had been introduced to him by like my first client.
- 13:57And we were like emulating what they were doing.
- 13:59And so, but at a small scale.
- 14:00And like even that was very hard.
- 14:02I want to ask you about Caleb Ralston
- 14:04because he is definitely a leader
- 14:07in the YouTube education space right now.
- 14:10And you worked with him for quite a long time.
- 14:12Like what makes him so good at what he does,
- 14:15what makes him special?
- 14:16Caleb is incredible.
- 14:18What he's building with Ralston is,
- 14:20I'm just like so proud of him.
- 14:21And you know, start from the beginning,
- 14:23like the day I met him, you know,
- 14:24it was like one of my first days in the office.
- 14:26And I remember he came up to me and he was like,
- 14:28I have your back, if you need anything, like I got you.
- 14:32He's like, I think he said he's like,
- 14:33I just want to make sure you like,
- 14:34you know, you have like an ally on the team.
- 14:36And that's like carried like into my career.
- 14:38Like I've done that like so much for like other teams
- 14:40that I've been on and like even the people like on my team
- 14:42that I managed, like I let them know that.
- 14:44Like I think I've just like, I felt that deeply
- 14:46because it was nerve-wracking to like join that team.
- 14:47And Caleb branded himself as pretty much like the guy
- 14:50that will get it done.
- 14:51Caleb was staying in the office like overnight
- 14:53to make sure these trash talk ups would get done.
- 14:55So reliability, that's like the key distinguishing factor.
- 14:59You can count on him no matter what.
- 15:01Yeah, reliability.
- 15:02And he grew such in his career because at one point,
- 15:04you know, like he was just like sort of the videographer
- 15:06and editor for Gary.
- 15:08And then, you know, on the way,
- 15:09he became the brand director for Alex and Leila.
- 15:12He started teaching me so much.
- 15:14And he really helped me have the perspective of like,
- 15:16hey man, like there's more to your career
- 15:18than like just being like a videographer and editor.
- 15:20He's like, and he's the one actually help position me
- 15:23and get in contact with Mike Posner.
- 15:25He's like, I really think this would be like big for your career
- 15:27to stop like get out of the just being like sort of like
- 15:29in the editor's seat and learn how to like manage a team.
- 15:32I'm still learning from him like to this day,
- 15:33you know, obviously we were seeing the content
- 15:35but a lot of respect for Caleb.
- 15:36Is that a natural gift of his or do you think like he's learned it
- 15:40by watching Gary or by reading about it or studying?
- 15:43Probably just reps.
- 15:44He's been in the game for a while.
- 15:45You know, he's worked for tons of personal brands
- 15:48for like the past like 17, 18 years.
- 15:50And so I think he was really good absorbing the information.
- 15:53I could tell like he could really listen to like Gary
- 15:55and that would like trickle back to like what we were making.
- 15:58And so I bet you like in theory, like he was absorbing
- 16:01all this information.
- 16:02If someone wanted to build their own version of DailyVee
- 16:06or if you had to build DailyVee from scratch again today,
- 16:09what would be your playbook?
- 16:11I would first like make sure that's like something
- 16:13that you want to do like start with like the why.
- 16:16What is DailyVee?
- 16:17DailyVee is like the the documentation of your life
- 16:19that you're going to put into vlog form and put on the internet
- 16:21and people are going to watch that.
- 16:23If you don't want people knowing a lot about you
- 16:25then you probably shouldn't do that.
- 16:26So like I would start there.
- 16:27Make sure like you're doing it for all the right reasons.
- 16:29If you do want to do it, if you're like no,
- 16:31I do want people like to learn from me know about my life.
- 16:34And you can make restrictions that like Gary does a very good job
- 16:36of like not showing his family and like personal life.
- 16:38Even though he's like highly documented.
- 16:40So you can do both.
- 16:40But if you're going about creating it,
- 16:42you can start with yourself.
- 16:43Like you don't need the David Rock, you don't need Jason.
- 16:46I would start by yeah, just like documenting core moments
- 16:49of your day, she runs Zoom calls a day,
- 16:50just trying like record stuff.
- 16:52And see if you can make something of yourself.
- 16:54That might be challenging for like the entrepreneur
- 16:56who's not really a creator.
- 16:57And so if that's the case where like you're self-shooting
- 17:00and like nothing's getting made from it,
- 17:01it's just like living in your camera roll,
- 17:03then maybe the next step is like hey,
- 17:04like let me see if I can self-record
- 17:06and then send this to an editor.
- 17:07If that doesn't start working out well
- 17:08because like you're just not capturing enough,
- 17:10then I think yeah, you might want a higher videographer
- 17:13at that point, but I would be very intentional.
- 17:15I think maybe four or five years ago,
- 17:17it would have made a lot more sense
- 17:18to have videographer around capture your day to day.
- 17:21That might make for a vlog.
- 17:23And then maybe some make short form content.
- 17:24To really get the value out of that,
- 17:26like the time spent, the budget to go into that,
- 17:29I think you should be more intentional.
- 17:30I wouldn't like record your whole day.
- 17:32I would be like okay, like I have this podcast on.
- 17:35I'm gonna like have my videographer set up camera.
- 17:37So we have like a more high-deaf version of it.
- 17:39And I can like clip moments from that.
- 17:41And then maybe I have like a, you know,
- 17:43meeting with my business partner
- 17:44and we can record some content out of that.
- 17:46But I think more than document don't create,
- 17:48I think now it's like, can your videographer at that point
- 17:51maybe have sourced like 10 questions
- 17:53from the moments they recorded through the day
- 17:55and start asking questions.
- 17:56And I think that would actually make for better content now.
- 17:58I don't think, you know, unless your life is very interesting
- 18:02that most people are gonna watch a 15 minute vlog.
- 18:04And so I would love that to be the case
- 18:07such a fun job to like document and make these things.
- 18:10But it's not for everyone.
- 18:11I don't think like content getting, I guess, more saturated.
- 18:14People are not gonna watch the everyday person's 15 minute vlog.
- 18:17So you have to be very intentional
- 18:18of like what you're making.
- 18:19Yeah, I've heard that you have to really give yourself
- 18:22constraints when you're making vlogs.
- 18:23I think 10 years ago it was fair game to just record your day
- 18:27and people would sit with you and enjoy it.
- 18:28But I think now, you know, you really need to frame it
- 18:31around some kind of objective or some kind of area of expertise
- 18:35because there's just too much out there
- 18:37for random people to get interested in other random people.
- 18:40Definitely.
- 18:41I think like the classic example is,
- 18:43I mean, I hate to point all things to Ryan Treyhands
- 18:45Penny series and that kind of stuff.
- 18:46But I think that is like what the vlog,
- 18:49like that's the best version of the vlog in 2026, in my opinion.
- 18:52Just because there were constraints,
- 18:53there was a mission, there was something to rally behind.
- 18:55I'm not saying that everything needs to be challenged driven.
- 18:59Yeah.
- 18:59But I think the tighter you go,
- 19:01the higher likelihood of success you will have
- 19:04making vlog content.
- 19:05Definitely.
- 19:06And I think like if someone was like watching this
- 19:07and they're like interested in having a vlog,
- 19:09I think like almost the better way of navigating it
- 19:11is like interview 10 videographers and tell them like,
- 19:14hey, I want you to like come with me
- 19:16for like a few hours of my day.
- 19:17And instead of just being a fly on the wall,
- 19:19I want you to ask like really good questions.
- 19:21And that's like a lot of what I did with my co-signer.
- 19:23So he, like Mike hired me as his head of content.
- 19:26And we didn't create a vlog,
- 19:27but I would spend a lot of time with him
- 19:29and I was very just curious about his life.
- 19:30And a lot of those clips ended up becoming good content.
- 19:33Like example is like I spent all day with him
- 19:35and we were in his car and taped on his steering wheel.
- 19:38It was like a notepad.
- 19:40He wrote on it and said,
- 19:41I'm a composer about to love myself no matter what.
- 19:43And I was like, he just taped it like crudely
- 19:45on his steering wheel.
- 19:46And I was like, he didn't make a mention of it.
- 19:48And I was like, why'd you do that?
- 19:50He's basically like, I need to remind myself this.
- 19:52He's like, you know, fighting for happiness.
- 19:53Like whatever his answer was either way,
- 19:56it was super interesting to me.
- 19:57And so I recorded that.
- 19:58Like it wasn't like I was just being curious and nosy.
- 20:01That became a moment.
- 20:02And so like having a videographer around
- 20:04may be being a little nosy and curious
- 20:06and being more of like a journalist in your life
- 20:08can actually I think make for really good content.
- 20:11I just wrote a note to myself to start asking
- 20:13our CEO more questions.
- 20:15Yeah, I think like it's hard,
- 20:17but you're not like with them maybe directly.
- 20:19If you struggle to make content
- 20:20and I struggle with like directly talking to a camera,
- 20:22even podcasts like, but conversations work really well.
- 20:25It's way easier for me to like have a conversation with you
- 20:28than it would be like for me to like turn to this camera
- 20:30and be like, here's my 10 tips on personal brand.
- 20:32And I think a lot of other content creators
- 20:34and people that are making content for people,
- 20:37yeah, should they should lean into
- 20:38more like more conversational type content.
- 20:39Over the biggest differences between working with Gary Vee
- 20:43and working with Mike Posner.
- 20:45It's a great question
- 20:46because Gary's very unique and Mike is very unique.
- 20:49This is not to say that Gary's not an artist
- 20:51because he is, but Mike is a true artist.
- 20:53He's such a good writer.
- 20:55That's why he's gone on to write like these platinum hits
- 20:57or like Justin Bieber, Maroon 5 and himself,
- 21:00watching him in the studio here at B
- 21:02and then like just cultivate a line
- 21:05that turned into like this whole like beautiful ballad.
- 21:08It's way different than watching Gary approach
- 21:11like a business meeting and just like,
- 21:12it's almost actually the same, but it's like different.
- 21:15Mike's pocket was like cultivating like this sonic,
- 21:18like I said, ballad and then Gary would like watch this
- 21:20like masterpiece of like how he would like pick apart
- 21:22maybe like a business or like an entrepreneur
- 21:25that needed help and I would see like the art
- 21:27of what he was doing there.
- 21:28Gary was coming up with like a lot of the strategy
- 21:31and ideas like before I talked about Gary's like,
- 21:33I'm noticing TikTok's really working
- 21:35like or like it's gonna be this thing.
- 21:36We need to like lean in there.
- 21:37With Mike, he wasn't like that.
- 21:38So it was more on me as the head of content
- 21:40to like bring these ideas to the table
- 21:42and also make the call for like we're doing something
- 21:44and be like, hey, like we shouldn't do this anymore.
- 21:46That was a core difference and that helped me.
- 21:48I had to learn a lot because like I realized like how much
- 21:51maybe I was like leaning on Gary,
- 21:53how much was getting done just because he's such good
- 21:55like a brain and content and strategy.
- 21:57And so with Mike, it was the reverse.
- 21:58He was, if you just positioned him well,
- 22:00he would deliver, but he's not gonna like come up with like,
- 22:02you know, go hard on LinkedIn.
- 22:04That's like a career trajectory
- 22:06that I've heard a number of times
- 22:07where you kind of like learn from somebody else
- 22:10who leads the charge,
- 22:11but then the next step is for you to be that person
- 22:13for somebody else.
- 22:14And it sounds like, you know, you got your reps in with Gary
- 22:17and then it was time to become the leader yourself
- 22:19and you became that leader for Mike Posner
- 22:21and you were involved like you were responsible
- 22:23for coming up with video ideas, the social strategy.
- 22:25So like what was your game plan going into working with him?
- 22:29You're working with this incredible artist,
- 22:31platinum records, ghost writing for other legendary artists
- 22:34and you've been asked to be his content lead.
- 22:38How do you solve that problem?
- 22:39Yeah, in a world where like it's just me, him and his virtual EA.
- 22:44There's no agency, there's no other team.
- 22:47Like it's just me and him and I live in Amsterdam
- 22:49and he's in Los Angeles.
- 22:51How are we gonna do this?
- 22:52And that was like a big question.
- 22:53It was like, how is this gonna get done?
- 22:55And I did end up spending, you know, half the year
- 22:58in 2024 with him.
- 22:59So I did like invest a lot of energy being with him
- 23:02because the answer was like, well,
- 23:04I have to get a lot of this done right now.
- 23:05In the beginning of it, there was like a partnership
- 23:07like where he wanted to create a podcast out to gate.
- 23:10That was one of his ideas in bringing me on
- 23:12and we did have a studio where he would go to
- 23:14and record that content.
- 23:15And I was sort of like virtually producing it
- 23:17before like the first few weeks
- 23:18until I got out there with him.
- 23:20You know, that was objective number one.
- 23:22Like let's get the ball rolling.
- 23:23Let's find a podcast studio.
- 23:24Let's make sure it's getting edited.
- 23:26Let's get this all rolling.
- 23:27One of the best pieces of advice I got
- 23:28before leaving VaynerMedia
- 23:30because I like met with like all the people
- 23:32that I had met in the ecosystem of it
- 23:34was from Tyler Schmidt.
- 23:35He used to be Gary's yay and then he ran 157.
- 23:38Now he's like his relationships manager.
- 23:40He's a really great guy.
- 23:41He said stay close to the work.
- 23:43Really what he met was don't just like
- 23:44offload all your duties of building Mike's brand
- 23:48to other people, do it yourself.
- 23:50And then you'll have a way better way of managing
- 23:52the people that are gonna end up doing it anyways.
- 23:54And so kind of took that the heart
- 23:55and it was kind of just the natural evolution
- 23:57of working with Mike anyways.
- 23:58I went out there, I was filming
- 24:00and then at night I was editing.
- 24:01And then if we had a YouTube video, I was posting it.
- 24:03And then at first I was making the thumbnails
- 24:05and I like shouldn't have been.
- 24:06And then like right away you start like realizing,
- 24:08okay, like my core skill set is not making thumbnails.
- 24:10I need to hire someone.
- 24:11But at least I kind of like gone through the rhythm of it.
- 24:14And when I was in an LA, I had like higher videographers
- 24:17but I had already spent like a lot of time with him.
- 24:19And so I understood like how to approach that situation.
- 24:21Cause it's like kind of putting a rover on Mars.
- 24:23And it's not like as easy as just being like,
- 24:25hey show up at this time and like, you know,
- 24:27ask these questions, it's hey, like this is the best way
- 24:29to position you to like get the most out of Mike
- 24:31during this time.
- 24:32Or like where his time's like limited and he's a busy guy.
- 24:34I stayed close to the work and then I just had to like,
- 24:36we had to figure out like what was important to Mike.
- 24:39And at the time it was like, we wanna do the podcast
- 24:42and then over the short couple of months,
- 24:44we realized like hey, this is not the best format for him.
- 24:46Cause we're kind of at the mercy of like when guests
- 24:48are available and working with his schedule.
- 24:50And it's like, this is not like the most scalable thing.
- 24:52We ended up doing like a whole lot of stuff
- 24:55but we just really like really leaned into like
- 24:57Instagram as its main platform
- 24:58and started to like really picking apart like his sort of past.
- 25:02You know, I'm not working with him currently
- 25:03has another creative director.
- 25:05But it's cool to see like some of the stuff that we were doing
- 25:07has like evolved and is like still part of like their
- 25:10content strategy and one of them is just like the carousels.
- 25:13Like I remember Mike was only posting video content,
- 25:16I texted him, I was like, hey, I would love to like post
- 25:19note screenshots.
- 25:20Like I want you to like pull hardily like write something.
- 25:22I'm just gonna screenshot it.
- 25:23We're gonna like make carousels out of it
- 25:24cause I want people to feel you.
- 25:26I don't want it to feel like over produced all the time.
- 25:28It's okay that we're gonna make some reels
- 25:30that like are edited and obviously not from you.
- 25:32But if like we're making, I wanna make quote style images.
- 25:35I wanna go like super raw.
- 25:36And one of like the first ones like went like super viral
- 25:39and we've like evolved it.
- 25:40Like it was basically his 10 years since writing the song,
- 25:43I took a pill in Ibiza.
- 25:45And he wrote about being 27 with the line was and like being
- 25:4937 and what like the difference was in that line.
- 25:51And it would like, you know, that song basically is like,
- 25:54I took a pill in Ibiza and then like the next line 10 years
- 25:56later would be like, I've been sober for 10 years.
- 25:58And like the other one would be like, you know,
- 26:00a driver sports car.
- 26:01Oh, enjoy the ride.
- 26:03The next line would be, I drive a Toyota for a runner.
- 26:06I don't care what people think.
- 26:07And he was like, and so he sent me this and I was like,
- 26:10this is pretty good.
- 26:11And then I just kind of ripped it up like any other post
- 26:13and it just went like super viral.
- 26:15Publications picked it up and we're articles about it.
- 26:17What's cool was like the team,
- 26:18they continued to like sort of use that as a format
- 26:22that they took into like a super visual.
- 26:25Like they like took like high-deaf photos
- 26:27and like made it like more of like a magazine type version of it.
- 26:30And cooler than that, like I saw him like,
- 26:32he has a new song coming out.
- 26:33And it's literally sort of a remix of I took a pill in Ibiza
- 26:37and it's sung to the tune of it.
- 26:38But it's like the words of it are like,
- 26:41what his life's currently like now.
- 26:43It's interesting having listened to you
- 26:45for the last little while now.
- 26:46I feel like one through line from everything
- 26:49that you've worked on is I think you are really,
- 26:51you have a really good sense of taste
- 26:53when you are working with Gary
- 26:55and you were being a videographer.
- 26:57It's one thing to just film moments
- 26:59but also to kind of know what's going on situationally
- 27:02and have the questions prepared
- 27:04like the right kind of questions.
- 27:05Like that requires taste.
- 27:07And then as you talked about Mike Posner
- 27:09and you know some of the work you were doing with him,
- 27:11you were able to identify moments in his artistry
- 27:15that would make really good pieces of content.
- 27:17And that's because you are good at cultivating taste.
- 27:20So the question that I have is how did you attain that taste?
- 27:24Is that like natural talent
- 27:25or is that through decades of consuming content
- 27:29or is there any kind of like special artistry
- 27:31that you've paid extra attention to to become who you are?
- 27:34Yeah, I hate to give you the guy that's like,
- 27:36it's a natural born talent.
- 27:38I don't know.
- 27:38I think I've made so much content.
- 27:43Like before GaryVee was like working for a gentleman
- 27:45that owned a gym and he was like to want to introduce me
- 27:48to like this guy GaryVee and he has a vlog
- 27:50and I want to like make that self content
- 27:51and I made a lot of content with just that gentleman.
- 27:54Like we started an agency
- 27:55and we were making for other entrepreneurs Gary.
- 27:58I made so much content and I think part of me
- 28:00didn't want to just make like the next thing.
- 28:03I'm trying to make it interesting.
- 28:04I'm trying to change it up.
- 28:05And in world we're like Instagram TikTok
- 28:07like everything feels the same.
- 28:09I'm like how do we stand out?
- 28:11Like how do I win?
- 28:12Like if I don't make good content here
- 28:13if the results don't come in
- 28:15like Mike might not want to work with me.
- 28:17And so like kind of took a bet on like these things.
- 28:19If I feel a little interested about this steering wheel thing
- 28:21I think a lot of other people are gonna be interested about it.
- 28:23It's probably working on Gary's team along the way
- 28:26but I feel like it was like if you have like any interest in it
- 28:28there's probably a lot of other people
- 28:30that are gonna like what to hear more about that.
- 28:31And I think that's like as an editor,
- 28:33you kind of like a tune out stuff after a while
- 28:35if you're like watching something for like hours and hours
- 28:37especially like editing a vlog
- 28:39I might actually not be like hearing the whole dialogue.
- 28:41But sometimes you catch something.
- 28:42You'd be like oh that's actually like super fire Gary.
- 28:44In that case I might like send that to like the Instagram team.
- 28:47But I think we got really good at just like
- 28:48narrowing in these hot moments.
- 28:50And so I think it's reps is really the answer.
- 28:52I think I've done it a lot of times through just filming
- 28:55and then bringing these things into edit
- 28:57where kind of like come more into like
- 28:59what might be interesting to other people.
- 29:01And is that measured by performance success
- 29:05or is that measured by something else?
- 29:08Cause you mentioned working with a gym, a fitness guy
- 29:11and I'm like how the hell does that translate to Mike Posner?
- 29:14Like it doesn't seem very, like there's a lot of translate.
- 29:16But when you're posting content
- 29:18you're getting that feedback by views
- 29:20is that what is helping you identify good moments
- 29:24or is there something else to it?
- 29:25So there was a little bit more on Mike's side.
- 29:27We, I would say didn't fully develop this
- 29:30but it was part of our strategy.
- 29:31And where were Mike hired me to help people?
- 29:34His whole thing was health and happiness.
- 29:36It came from his father.
- 29:37It's like the two most important things to him
- 29:39and Mike sort of built that into his brand.
- 29:41So like in anything we did, we were trying to help people.
- 29:43He didn't actually care about the numbers as much.
- 29:46He was caring about the depth.
- 29:47We would track like deep comments.
- 29:49A deep comment might be like,
- 29:51Hey, like I open up my feed today.
- 29:52I saw this video.
- 29:53I'm so glad like it saved my life basically.
- 29:57And so we would measure success a lot
- 29:58based on deep comments.
- 30:00And so that was like,
- 30:01wouldn't say not scalable
- 30:02but it's a different kind of metric
- 30:03than just like tracking your results.
- 30:05To be all technical, like the best way
- 30:07I think you should go about it
- 30:09if you're being like just data driven.
- 30:10It's just like track month to month,
- 30:12down months are okay.
- 30:13But quarter to quarter you should be going up
- 30:14in terms of like overall reach.
- 30:16Like that's like the, you know,
- 30:18the most mathy way to put it.
- 30:19But then like on the Mike side
- 30:21we like narrowed in like what it was his why?
- 30:23Why are we making content?
- 30:24And his thing was like on changed lives.
- 30:25And so like I would go through his DMs every day
- 30:27and like screenshot like 15 messages
- 30:29that were like insane.
- 30:31And I said to him,
- 30:32I think like Jason,
- 30:32thank you so much for sending this to me.
- 30:34And it gave him so much more like life
- 30:35and like energy to like want to shoot with me tomorrow.
- 30:37Cause you know,
- 30:38he doesn't want to wake up the morning
- 30:39and have a camera in his face.
- 30:40But then like when he sees like save someone's life
- 30:42or got someone out of bed,
- 30:44like he felt really great about that.
- 30:46So you know, we were tracking the right things
- 30:48but these other things that were important to us.
- 30:50That tracks with us too.
- 30:51Cause like our show is very, very small.
- 30:53Kimball is a very small podcast at the moment.
- 30:55Yeah.
- 30:56But when people comment something
- 30:57that's like really substantial.
- 30:58Olena and I, we definitely shoot it to each other.
- 31:01It gives us a little bit of like,
- 31:02oh thank goodness, we're doing the right thing.
- 31:03We're on the right track
- 31:05because the numbers aren't where we want them to be.
- 31:07Like eventually we'll get there by getting in more reps.
- 31:09But right now there is definitely more importance
- 31:12to like really meaningful comments from people.
- 31:14So that's, that's good to hear.
- 31:15Yeah, I think it's some, it's not all about the numbers.
- 31:18And we know that.
- 31:19And I think it's so easy now.
- 31:20There's like so many tools like track everything.
- 31:23Like how many people have dropped off
- 31:24over the first six seconds
- 31:26and it can inform you.
- 31:27Like, you know, like it informs like what you should do
- 31:30but it just think like it kind of takes the magic away from it.
- 31:32I don't know how to like word it
- 31:33and get too like spiritual about it
- 31:35but there was like some form of magic
- 31:36in terms of like moments and things that I recorded with Mike.
- 31:39That didn't come from like data
- 31:41and it did come from like staying true to like the Y.
- 31:43One of the projects we worked on was with Mekawish.
- 31:46It was a girl who like terminal cancer
- 31:47and she always wanted to make a song
- 31:49and like we went into the studio
- 31:51a court recorded behind the scenes of it.
- 31:52And like wrote a song with her
- 31:54they created a song together.
- 31:55And one of the pieces of the concept
- 31:57went like to had results but like we didn't care.
- 31:59Like we were just doing what we wanted to do.
- 32:02Like through the mission that we had with making content
- 32:04and that was all we needed it.
- 32:05It's not about like how many more followers we got from that.
- 32:08How do you decide what a creator should be known for
- 32:11and then translate that into actual recurring
- 32:14like content formats and series?
- 32:16I have a client I'm thinking of right now
- 32:18that we've just onboarded her.
- 32:20We're building a her personal brand at large.
- 32:23The company that she runs is like a nine figure business
- 32:25that basically coaches women
- 32:27and most of minorities to build wealth.
- 32:29They have like coaching programs in person events.
- 32:32And so a lot of the content is around money.
- 32:36And you know, if you're making $100,000 or more
- 32:39we're trying to like build content out
- 32:41that would serve those people
- 32:42because it's gonna bring in more clients for her.
- 32:44And like that's valid for her.
- 32:46I think for anyone, if you're investing meaningful money
- 32:50into your personal brand,
- 32:51it has to have like a business.
- 32:52It has to feed it back in one way or another.
- 32:55And so that's like one way of, you know, figuring out
- 32:58like what kind of content you're gonna make.
- 32:59Outside of that, we make a lot of content for her
- 33:01that it's like about travel and her being a mom
- 33:03and her working out because like she's enjoying that journey.
- 33:06And so you can't just be one thing
- 33:08because then you'll just like look like the four
- 33:10entrepreneurs on the internet that we all know
- 33:12and we'll just all look the same.
- 33:14And so for her, at the beginning of the journey,
- 33:16but I'm spending more time with her.
- 33:18And like, you know, one idea that she had
- 33:19and we're executing on is that she wants to do like
- 33:22pop up events at coffee shops.
- 33:24Like in a world where like everything's going AI
- 33:26and like digitize, she's like, I wanna meet up with people.
- 33:28And like I just want to do like live Q&A.
- 33:30And it's like the most scalable thing.
- 33:31It takes a lot of energy, set up these events, go there.
- 33:34But that's just like one way of like how she wants
- 33:36to create content.
- 33:37She wants to be like physically in the room with people.
- 33:38She probably took a step back and was like,
- 33:40I've been doing podcasts for all these years
- 33:42and I'm burnt out from just like staring at a camera
- 33:43and being like in the room with like no one.
- 33:45She's like, I wanna be with people.
- 33:47That's what fuels me up.
- 33:47And so that's like how she's figuring it out
- 33:49and how we're figuring it out, how to make her content.
- 33:52So I think it's like probably a conversation
- 33:55with your team lead or just yourself, a creator.
- 33:57It's just being like, how do I make content?
- 33:59Caleb says like Caleb Ralston, go back to him.
- 34:02He has a really good way of saying it.
- 34:04But basically it's like make content
- 34:06while doing something that you love.
- 34:07He has like amazing videos where he's like out in Las Vegas
- 34:10where he's like riding his motorcycle.
- 34:11But then he's also telling this amazing story
- 34:13about like personal brand.
- 34:14That's probably really dope to him
- 34:15because he's getting to like create content
- 34:17while he's like riding his motorcycle
- 34:18and like and it's pairing himself with something he loves.
- 34:20I think that's a really good like piece of advice
- 34:22that I learned from him and I kind of like knew
- 34:23but it was like he put it to words
- 34:25and I think people should do more.
- 34:26It's like pairing it with stuff you love.
- 34:28It's a really good way to like get out some good stuff.
- 34:30All right Jason, who is a creator
- 34:32that's on your radar right now?
- 34:34That's worthy of a shout out.
- 34:35I wouldn't say it's just a creator.
- 34:37It's a brand.
- 34:38They're called First Class Jerk.
- 34:39They're in the hospitality space
- 34:41and they make really great content about luxury hotels,
- 34:44travel, Adam Lovex, the face of it,
- 34:47his partner's Matt Ripple.
- 34:48They create amazing content.
- 34:49I think they're navigating the travel space
- 34:51way differently than what other people.
- 34:54It's tasteful, it's authentic to them.
- 34:56I don't know, I just really love the content
- 34:57and I will say I am helping them out
- 34:59on some YouTube videos.
- 35:00So you know, it's a little biased
- 35:02but without me in the equation,
- 35:05they are making really dope travel content
- 35:07and I think everyone should check them out.
- 35:10All right Jason, thank you so much
- 35:11for being on the show.
- 35:12It was pleasure meeting you and speaking with you
