- 0:06Speaker: Hello and welcome to the Motor
- 0:07Speaker: Trade Radio podcast powered by
- 0:10Speaker: Cazoo.
- 0:11Speaker: With Philip Lockhart and Curtis Hutchinson bringing you all the
- 0:15Speaker: chatter that matters across the car retailing sector from
- 0:20Speaker: factory to forecourt.
- 0:26Speaker: Hello and welcome to this special bonus episode of Motor
- 0:30Speaker: Trade Radio today.
- 0:31Speaker: We're delighted to welcome back to the pod, Robert Forrester,
- 0:35Speaker: CEO of Virtue Motors.
- 0:37Speaker: Robert's joining us to discuss
- 0:39Speaker: the latest developments with the
- 0:41Speaker: Zev mandate.
- 0:43Speaker: Now Robert's consistently spoken
- 0:45Speaker: out about the way the Zev
- 0:47Speaker: mandate was introduced and
- 0:49Speaker: subsequently enforced, citing
- 0:52Speaker: the damage it is doing to the
- 0:54Speaker: automotive, retailing and
- 0:56Speaker: manufacturing sectors.
- 0:58Speaker: So following a week of speculation last Friday, Andy
- 1:03Speaker: Burnham's new administration confirmed it had brought forward
- 1:07Speaker: the review of the Zev mandate, which was expected next year,
- 1:12Speaker: and it has started a consultation process on whether
- 1:17Speaker: to soften targets for EV sales.
- 1:20Speaker: An acknowledgement that the government's targets are not
- 1:24Speaker: being achieved now.
- 1:26Speaker: The consultation will include
- 1:28Speaker: carmakers, suppliers, retailers,
- 1:31Speaker: charging companies and other key
- 1:34Speaker: stakeholders.
- 1:35Speaker: Now, without going into the minutiae, it's a fairly complex
- 1:39Speaker: five stage process involving central and devolved governments
- 1:45Speaker: with a deadline of the twenty third of October.
- 1:49Speaker: So the clock is very much ticking.
- 1:52Speaker: Welcome back, Robert, and thanks
- 1:54Speaker: for joining us for the Zev
- 1:56Speaker: mandate update.
- 1:59Speaker: Always a pleasure.
- 2:00Speaker: One day I'd like to come on here and not talk about this.
- 2:03Speaker: Yes.
- 2:04Speaker: Yeah.
- 2:04Speaker: Talk about Zev mandate and EVs in general.
- 2:07Speaker: Maybe one day.
- 2:09Speaker: To be fair, there'll be something else.
- 2:13Speaker: There'll be something else that
- 2:14Speaker: we're repeating on a regular
- 2:15Speaker: basis.
- 2:16Speaker: We've.
- 2:16Speaker: We've seen it.
- 2:17Speaker: You never know.
- 2:18Speaker: Dieselgate might return one day and we'll regret it.
- 2:22Speaker: But yeah.
- 2:22Speaker: No, I mean, welcome back.
- 2:24Speaker: And and thought it was an apt time, particularly after that
- 2:27Speaker: announcement that appeared the other weekend quite quietly, um,
- 2:32Speaker: on I think it was brought by the Sunday Times and sort of not a
- 2:35Speaker: lot of, uh, the sector picked up on it at the time, but I know it
- 2:39Speaker: was something that has been obviously close to you.
- 2:42Speaker: So I think to begin with, let's start with some context on, you
- 2:47Speaker: know, how the, the Zev mandate is currently impacting the car
- 2:51Speaker: and van retailing sector and yourself, Robert, as the CEO of
- 2:55Speaker: one of the UK's largest franchise dealer groups.
- 2:59Speaker: I mean, what impact is the Zev
- 3:01Speaker: mandate having on your your
- 3:03Speaker: business?
- 3:05Speaker: Well, you'd have to live on the moon not to understand the
- 3:09Speaker: impact of the state intervention in completely upending the
- 3:13Speaker: normal rules of capitalism, where supply and demand dictate
- 3:18Speaker: how much is produced and how much is sold, and the price at
- 3:22Speaker: which it is sold at.
- 3:23Speaker: And it works very, very well.
- 3:25Speaker: Adam Smith was not incorrect.
- 3:28Speaker: What we've actually ended up
- 3:29Speaker: with is unfortunately, a
- 3:32Speaker: complete lack of understanding
- 3:34Speaker: of basic economics by the
- 3:36Speaker: government, aided in abetted by
- 3:39Speaker: quite ideological lobby groups,
- 3:43Speaker: particularly around EV charging,
- 3:45Speaker: actually, that imposed on the UK
- 3:49Speaker: sector.
- 3:49Speaker: But in fairness, there were not
- 3:50Speaker: dissimilar arrangements in
- 3:52Speaker: America and Europe at one time,
- 3:54Speaker: which says you have to sell more
- 3:56Speaker: electric vehicles or you have
- 3:57Speaker: massive fines and the impact of
- 3:59Speaker: that on normal demand and supply
- 4:01Speaker: curves is anybody who studied
- 4:02Speaker: economics will say it causes
- 4:04Speaker: massive dislocation.
- 4:06Speaker: In the case of the UK market,
- 4:07Speaker: which had the most vicious
- 4:09Speaker: targets and the most vicious
- 4:10Speaker: fines, it therefore had the most
- 4:11Speaker: vicious impacts.
- 4:13Speaker: And the upshot is that
- 4:14Speaker: everyone's had to sell electric
- 4:16Speaker: vehicles at massive discounts to
- 4:17Speaker: try and create demand, to get
- 4:20Speaker: close to the targets or be faced
- 4:23Speaker: by fifteen thousand pounds or
- 4:27Speaker: twelve thousand pounds of
- 4:28Speaker: vehicle fines, depending on cars
- 4:29Speaker: and vans.
- 4:30Speaker: And actually cars were fifteen thousand pounds at one point.
- 4:32Speaker: And the upshot is everyone has
- 4:34Speaker: had to discount massively and
- 4:37Speaker: the profit pool for the
- 4:39Speaker: automotive sector, from parts
- 4:41Speaker: all the way through to retail
- 4:42Speaker: has been significantly eroded,
- 4:45Speaker: and that has then has an impact
- 4:47Speaker: on jobs, viability, investment
- 4:50Speaker: and the and the UK automotive
- 4:52Speaker: sector has not turned up in
- 4:54Speaker: terms of driving economic growth
- 4:56Speaker: in the UK, As have many other
- 4:58Speaker: sectors not turned up for not
- 5:00Speaker: unknown reasons.
- 5:02Speaker: Government policy has been
- 5:04Speaker: delusional and this consultation
- 5:06Speaker: is a good acknowledgement of
- 5:07Speaker: that.
- 5:08Speaker: I don't think it's the end of the story.
- 5:09Speaker: I think this is an ongoing thing we've got to do.
- 5:12Speaker: But the sector would have faced catastrophic scenarios had
- 5:18Speaker: something not been done.
- 5:19Speaker: Now nothing's been done apart from consultation.
- 5:21Speaker: But the direction of travel is
- 5:22Speaker: broadly clear and it's to be
- 5:24Speaker: welcomed.
- 5:25Speaker: And I mean, obviously, you know, we've had the electric car
- 5:29Speaker: grant, which, you know, look a quite a significant amount of
- 5:35Speaker: money from the Treasury to support the growth.
- 5:39Speaker: Well, not really, not really.
- 5:41Speaker: No, not the money that was put
- 5:42Speaker: on the table was a drop in the
- 5:44Speaker: ocean compared to the level of
- 5:45Speaker: discounting reported by the
- 5:46Speaker: Smmt.
- 5:47Speaker: I mean, let's talk facts.
- 5:48Speaker: I mean it's in the billions.
- 5:50Speaker: Were we.
- 5:50Speaker: Yeah.
- 5:51Speaker: Yeah.
- 5:51Speaker: We're not in the billions.
- 5:52Speaker: The manufacturers have written
- 5:54Speaker: off each year broadly Five
- 5:56Speaker: billion on discount electric
- 5:58Speaker: vehicles to try and stimulate
- 5:59Speaker: demand.
- 6:00Speaker: They've invested billions in in the R&D and the investment in
- 6:04Speaker: plant, which, let's be honest, most of the major European
- 6:07Speaker: manufacturers have now written off to zero.
- 6:10Speaker: From what I can see, massive write downs.
- 6:13Speaker: And this is economic madness.
- 6:16Speaker: I mean, just just something on the as a side on on this.
- 6:21Speaker: I mean, obviously, you know,
- 6:22Speaker: Kevin Moon entered UK government
- 6:26Speaker: and we know obviously from
- 6:29Speaker: across the the automotive
- 6:30Speaker: sector.
- 6:31Speaker: And there was a sort of bit of
- 6:32Speaker: hope that, you know, Perrin
- 6:33Speaker: would enter um, as a backbencher
- 6:36Speaker: to give some, you know, context,
- 6:39Speaker: you know, around the automotive
- 6:41Speaker: sector.
- 6:41Speaker: But I mean, recently, you know,
- 6:44Speaker: he's been quite challenging of
- 6:45Speaker: some of those challenges, both
- 6:47Speaker: from yourself and my cause more
- 6:48Speaker: recently from the Smmt in terms
- 6:50Speaker: of, you know, trying to look at
- 6:52Speaker: it pragmatically and the shift
- 6:54Speaker: to electrification and how much
- 6:55Speaker: damage.
- 6:56Speaker: Well, I'm not even so they were pragmatic.
- 6:59Speaker: I mean, it's it's actually looking at it with the facts.
- 7:03Speaker: And I was quite vociferous with
- 7:05Speaker: Paramount on, on LinkedIn, as
- 7:07Speaker: you know.
- 7:08Speaker: Um, his background is electric vehicle charging.
- 7:13Speaker: Frankly, the only people in the country who are vociferously
- 7:18Speaker: against moving on the Zev mandate are people connected
- 7:22Speaker: with electric vehicle charging.
- 7:24Speaker: Now, what amazes me is if we had no manufacturers and we had no
- 7:28Speaker: retailers, because they'd all been put out of business because
- 7:31Speaker: no one could make a profit.
- 7:32Speaker: There is no electric vehicle charging going on, and it seems
- 7:36Speaker: to me insane that we're even having this debate.
- 7:39Speaker: The sector should work together.
- 7:41Speaker: But when you've got a business
- 7:42Speaker: model like electric vehicle
- 7:43Speaker: charging companies, which is
- 7:45Speaker: broadly what I said on LinkedIn,
- 7:46Speaker: which is predicated on
- 7:47Speaker: government mandating a
- 7:49Speaker: technology and let's be honest,
- 7:51Speaker: massively subsidising that
- 7:54Speaker: sector.
- 7:56Speaker: Um, then it creates very entrenched positions because
- 8:00Speaker: they have to keep that wheel of subsidy and government
- 8:06Speaker: intervention going or their business model and their growth
- 8:09Speaker: prospects and their investment plans don't come to fruition.
- 8:12Speaker: Now, I could say a lot about that, but that is true.
- 8:18Speaker: And Robert, what would you as a key industry stakeholder like
- 8:23Speaker: the government to change to make the Zev mandate more realistic
- 8:27Speaker: for new car and van EV sales?
- 8:30Speaker: Because I'm assuming you will be involved in the consultation
- 8:33Speaker: process in some shape or form.
- 8:36Speaker: Uh, well, I've written down on a book here.
- 8:39Speaker: Us to get involved in Zev mandate consultation.
- 8:42Speaker: Uh, clearly we will also be
- 8:44Speaker: working with the Smmt, working
- 8:45Speaker: with the Nfda, working with the
- 8:47Speaker: Open Road Alliance, uh, and
- 8:49Speaker: other interested bodies on
- 8:50Speaker: making sure there's one voice,
- 8:52Speaker: uh, what we need and what we'll
- 8:54Speaker: get will be two different
- 8:56Speaker: things.
- 8:56Speaker: I think there will have to be some political pragmatism.
- 8:59Speaker: Yeah.
- 9:00Speaker: And what I would like is a
- 9:01Speaker: complete reduction in state
- 9:03Speaker: intervention in the UK economy,
- 9:05Speaker: because we haven't got got the
- 9:07Speaker: balance right.
- 9:07Speaker: What we'll get is something very different, which is still state
- 9:10Speaker: intervention, but a at a less destructive level, I suspect.
- 9:15Speaker: So if I was being pragmatic, um,
- 9:20Speaker: we need targets to be
- 9:21Speaker: significantly moderated to more
- 9:24Speaker: aligned with natural market
- 9:25Speaker: demand to allow the automotive
- 9:27Speaker: sector to make profits as well
- 9:29Speaker: as driving on the
- 9:30Speaker: electrification.
- 9:31Speaker: Nothing wrong with electrification.
- 9:32Speaker: It's the pace that we've got a
- 9:34Speaker: problem with in order that we
- 9:36Speaker: can protect jobs, keep going on
- 9:38Speaker: investment and contribute to the
- 9:39Speaker: UK economy.
- 9:40Speaker: The opposite is we continue with these high targets and we will
- 9:44Speaker: not have a UK automotive sector or a very depleted one.
- 9:48Speaker: Uh, because what is the point of being an industry where there is
- 9:50Speaker: no or limited profit?
- 9:52Speaker: So I think we need to cut, we need to clearly work together as
- 9:55Speaker: an industry with an ask.
- 9:57Speaker: And the ask, I think should be, uh, moderate.
- 10:01Speaker: The targets more closely align with the European Union set
- 10:04Speaker: twenty thirty five of a date.
- 10:06Speaker: Whether it gets to twenty thirty five or it gets moved again, I
- 10:09Speaker: think is an interesting date.
- 10:10Speaker: But at the moment, let's be
- 10:12Speaker: pragmatic and go for twenty
- 10:13Speaker: thirty five.
- 10:14Speaker: There is talk around a fifty percent task by twenty thirty.
- 10:18Speaker: To be honest, we're in twenty twenty seven.
- 10:19Speaker: In a few months time.
- 10:20Speaker: It still sounds very tasty for me and broadly unachievable.
- 10:25Speaker: But maybe this has to be done in bite sized chunks.
- 10:27Speaker: Um, certainly fifty percent is better than eighty percent.
- 10:31Speaker: And next year's target.
- 10:32Speaker: So that, you know, starting with me, I don't think it starts with
- 10:36Speaker: a four at some point, does it?
- 10:37Speaker: I think so, yeah.
- 10:41Speaker: Um, you know, this is this is not happening.
- 10:43Speaker: Um, I'm as worried about vans.
- 10:46Speaker: I'm slightly worried that bands will get left behind.
- 10:48Speaker: The van market is not moving anywhere near the target, I
- 10:51Speaker: think nine percent or something versus twenty four percent.
- 10:54Speaker: So it is important that the government recognizes that.
- 10:57Speaker: Now, clearly they do.
- 10:58Speaker: That's why they've gone for consultation.
- 11:00Speaker: I don't think this is purely about just the business wing.
- 11:03Speaker: I think parties like the trade
- 11:05Speaker: unionists have been very helpful
- 11:08Speaker: in recognising with the
- 11:09Speaker: government that this is a
- 11:10Speaker: problem.
- 11:11Speaker: They clearly don't want to see the jobs go, which is what's
- 11:16Speaker: going to happen.
- 11:17Speaker: So they've been vociferous.
- 11:19Speaker: Why have we got consultation?
- 11:20Speaker: And I don't think necessarily
- 11:22Speaker: it's due to the work of um
- 11:24Speaker: business.
- 11:25Speaker: I think, you know, the fact that
- 11:26Speaker: Liam Byrne came out, the fact
- 11:28Speaker: that the unite union were very
- 11:29Speaker: vocal, I think has clearly been
- 11:30Speaker: very helpful.
- 11:32Speaker: And Robert, just to follow up on
- 11:35Speaker: that, you mentioned twenty
- 11:36Speaker: thirty five.
- 11:37Speaker: So ideally you would like to see the ice ban move from twenty
- 11:41Speaker: thirty to twenty thirty five.
- 11:44Speaker: I would use the word carefully.
- 11:45Speaker: Ideally, I'd like the government
- 11:47Speaker: to get out the way and not
- 11:48Speaker: interfere in key industrial
- 11:50Speaker: markets.
- 11:51Speaker: Yeah, actually, but with my more pragmatic head on.
- 11:55Speaker: That's a start, isn't it?
- 11:56Speaker: Twenty thirty five and sort of
- 11:59Speaker: gradually, gradually get there
- 12:01Speaker: as the technology gets better,
- 12:03Speaker: as economies of scale come
- 12:04Speaker: through, uh, the market will
- 12:07Speaker: shift.
- 12:07Speaker: And I've said many times in fifteen years time we'll all be
- 12:09Speaker: in electric vehicles.
- 12:11Speaker: And where do you I mean,
- 12:12Speaker: obviously if we the flip
- 12:15Speaker: flopping of twenty, thirty to
- 12:16Speaker: thirty five back again, twenty,
- 12:18Speaker: thirty back to twenty thirty
- 12:19Speaker: five.
- 12:19Speaker: But that to one side and it is a, it's a key point.
- 12:23Speaker: But I mean, where do you see
- 12:24Speaker: this in terms of the, you know,
- 12:26Speaker: because the reports at the
- 12:27Speaker: minute is saying that the the
- 12:29Speaker: pure petrol and diesel ban, um
- 12:32Speaker: is immovable.
- 12:34Speaker: Um that's probably questionable
- 12:36Speaker: in many ways, but obviously the
- 12:38Speaker: focus seems to be on the plug in
- 12:40Speaker: hybrids and the hybrid
- 12:41Speaker: marketplace.
- 12:42Speaker: Where, where do you feel the I am I my philosophical starting
- 12:47Speaker: point is what is the government doing even on this pitch?
- 12:50Speaker: Why should the government really
- 12:53Speaker: be setting targets on which the
- 12:55Speaker: taxpayer and the consumer in the
- 12:57Speaker: UK cannot buy a certain
- 13:00Speaker: powertrain?
- 13:00Speaker: Mhm.
- 13:01Speaker: I mean, that's my opening standpoint.
- 13:03Speaker: The British public are quite
- 13:05Speaker: capable of understanding about
- 13:07Speaker: carbon dioxide and the
- 13:08Speaker: environment, and quite capable
- 13:10Speaker: of making economic decisions
- 13:12Speaker: rationally.
- 13:13Speaker: They do not need the government to tell them what to buy.
- 13:17Speaker: We have we have got the cafe, the global cafe.
- 13:19Speaker: We got we got plenty of vets.
- 13:21Speaker: There's enough regulation, regulations.
- 13:24Speaker: Philip.
- 13:24Speaker: Yeah, we've got the regulations
- 13:27Speaker: for that emission side of things
- 13:29Speaker: haven't we.
- 13:30Speaker: To, to, to control the impact of petrol and diesel.
- 13:35Speaker: I mean my overriding worry in
- 13:36Speaker: the past ten years has been that
- 13:38Speaker: this whole debate is
- 13:43Speaker: aggressively taken to by the
- 13:46Speaker: civil service and the government
- 13:47Speaker: and government.
- 13:48Speaker: And I'm talking both parties
- 13:50Speaker: because the Tories were well on
- 13:52Speaker: this pitch, uh, because actually
- 13:54Speaker: they don't like the private
- 13:55Speaker: vote.
- 13:57Speaker: And I think the industry has been woeful in explaining both
- 14:00Speaker: the economic and the personal individual freedom benefits of
- 14:03Speaker: private motor cars.
- 14:05Speaker: Increasingly, we're seeing some
- 14:07Speaker: nonsensical things going on,
- 14:09Speaker: like in Oxford, which is well
- 14:10Speaker: worthy of debate, where the
- 14:12Speaker: private motor car is basically
- 14:13Speaker: under attack.
- 14:15Speaker: And we'll see a number of cities going down that route.
- 14:17Speaker: So I think it's part of a wider debate.
- 14:19Speaker: But coming back to the Zev
- 14:20Speaker: mandate, we need less government
- 14:22Speaker: intervention.
- 14:23Speaker: We need the industry to be given a breathing space.
- 14:26Speaker: Every company has invested in electric vehicles.
- 14:28Speaker: The question is, can they make money selling them?
- 14:30Speaker: And why shouldn't they make money?
- 14:32Speaker: Haven't they invested capital?
- 14:35Speaker: I mean, not connected with this.
- 14:39Speaker: There's a lot of discussion at the minute around the EV, the
- 14:43Speaker: pence per mile, pure EVs and plug in hybrids.
- 14:48Speaker: And you know, that's currently
- 14:50Speaker: coming into effect April twenty
- 14:52Speaker: eight.
- 14:53Speaker: Now there's a lot of obviously,
- 14:55Speaker: we've had the latest from the
- 14:56Speaker: consultation, which is
- 14:57Speaker: obviously, you know, um, that
- 14:59Speaker: the vehicle doesn't need to be
- 15:02Speaker: monitored until it's three years
- 15:03Speaker: old, but it's left to the driver
- 15:06Speaker: or the asset holder to input the
- 15:08Speaker: mileage.
- 15:09Speaker: I mean, this again, alongside the Zev mandate is where there's
- 15:14Speaker: a policy being introduced without actually thinking
- 15:18Speaker: through the impact.
- 15:21Speaker: Oh, it's impact of comedy.
- 15:24Speaker: Honestly, this is comedy.
- 15:25Speaker: It's like watching reruns of yes, Prime Minister.
- 15:28Speaker: Uh, I mean, what let's get back to fundamentals.
- 15:31Speaker: Is there a problem?
- 15:32Speaker: Yes.
- 15:33Speaker: What is the problem?
- 15:34Speaker: Fuel duty isn't going to keep
- 15:35Speaker: going at the same rate due to
- 15:37Speaker: electrification.
- 15:37Speaker: Does everybody agree on that point?
- 15:39Speaker: Yes.
- 15:39Speaker: Does the government need to raise money?
- 15:41Speaker: Of course.
- 15:42Speaker: Why come up with a complete nonsensical self-declaration?
- 15:46Speaker: Well, that's going to work.
- 15:47Speaker: Well, then you put in, you know, more onerous on m o t stations,
- 15:52Speaker: including franchise m o t stations to do something else
- 15:56Speaker: when, let's be honest, there's a cap on what we can charge.
- 15:59Speaker: And I think if we're going to do something else, we should be
- 16:01Speaker: paid for it.
- 16:02Speaker: But why bother?
- 16:04Speaker: Why not just put an annual levy on electric vehicles?
- 16:08Speaker: Flat fee may be based on size of car or something that's simple
- 16:14Speaker: payable once can't be avoided to to plug the duty gap.
- 16:19Speaker: I mean, I don't know why this
- 16:20Speaker: wasn't done, but they've come up
- 16:22Speaker: with is an absolute nonsensical
- 16:25Speaker: mess.
- 16:28Speaker: And I think part of it stems from the people in power.
- 16:30Speaker: Most of them don't have cars and don't drive.
- 16:32Speaker: Actually, when I meet civil
- 16:34Speaker: servants, they all live in
- 16:34Speaker: London.
- 16:35Speaker: They all jump on the tube.
- 16:35Speaker: They have no clue what cars for.
- 16:38Speaker: And as you say, in terms of the reliance on and without going
- 16:44Speaker: down this rabbit Warren.
- 16:45Speaker: But the DVLA, through their
- 16:49Speaker: Processes and capabilities to
- 16:52Speaker: manage this.
- 16:54Speaker: Again, you know, it's not feasible.
- 16:57Speaker: I mean, it needs to in my
- 16:58Speaker: opinion, it needs to be go back
- 17:00Speaker: to simplicity.
- 17:01Speaker: And I did study taxation once and my, my exams.
- 17:05Speaker: Uh, it needs to be simple and a tax on a car based on size, like
- 17:10Speaker: road tax every year.
- 17:12Speaker: Just add on to it and add by way of it wouldn't even be it
- 17:15Speaker: wouldn't be a debate.
- 17:19Speaker: And Robert Mike Hawes, the CEO
- 17:22Speaker: of the Society of Motor
- 17:23Speaker: Manufacturers and Traders,
- 17:25Speaker: naturally welcomed the
- 17:27Speaker: consultation and it being
- 17:29Speaker: brought forward.
- 17:31Speaker: Um, because he's been campaigning against it, he has
- 17:34Speaker: done a phenomenal job.
- 17:36Speaker: That man, I have to say, uh, he has he deserves a knighthood and
- 17:40Speaker: he'll probably get it.
- 17:41Speaker: He has done an excellent job.
- 17:44Speaker: Totally.
- 17:45Speaker: And he's spot on with his utterances for sure.
- 17:48Speaker: I totally agree with you.
- 17:49Speaker: He's really raised the issue, raised the profile, and raised
- 17:53Speaker: the industry's voice.
- 17:55Speaker: Uh. On Friday, he called for
- 17:57Speaker: what he described as meaningful
- 17:59Speaker: change, not marginal
- 18:01Speaker: adjustments.
- 18:02Speaker: So how hopeful, um, are you
- 18:06Speaker: because you've had dealings over
- 18:08Speaker: the years with successive
- 18:09Speaker: governments?
- 18:10Speaker: How hopeful are you that, um,
- 18:13Speaker: you know, meaningful change can
- 18:15Speaker: actually.
- 18:15Speaker: I am very, very hopeful.
- 18:17Speaker: I am exceedingly optimistic.
- 18:20Speaker: And it's because there are people within the Parliamentary
- 18:25Speaker: Labour Party and the wider Labour movement who fully
- 18:29Speaker: understand the problem.
- 18:30Speaker: Now we might get to a position
- 18:32Speaker: whereby we have short term
- 18:33Speaker: relief, but long term objectives
- 18:35Speaker: are still in place, in which
- 18:36Speaker: case this will be an ongoing
- 18:38Speaker: effect every couple of years
- 18:39Speaker: where we have to get the things
- 18:40Speaker: changed.
- 18:41Speaker: But the unite union, uh, and people like Liam Byrne, who are
- 18:45Speaker: very, very good.
- 18:47Speaker: And there are people in government who fully understand
- 18:50Speaker: the need for change.
- 18:51Speaker: So this will happen.
- 18:56Speaker: I mean, yeah, I couldn't agree more.
- 18:57Speaker: I think like you said, I think nobody disagrees with the long
- 19:00Speaker: term aim and the result.
- 19:03Speaker: But actually it's how we are.
- 19:05Speaker: Yeah.
- 19:05Speaker: It's just ironic that why the
- 19:06Speaker: government think they need to do
- 19:07Speaker: it.
- 19:08Speaker: The long term result is we'll have electrified cars.
- 19:11Speaker: The market will deliver that.
- 19:12Speaker: Yeah.
- 19:13Speaker: And to be brutally honest, whether we go now, twenty thirty
- 19:16Speaker: or twenty thirty five or twenty forty will not make the blindest
- 19:20Speaker: bit of difference to global CO2.
- 19:22Speaker: No, I mean, that's the disconnect, isn't it?
- 19:25Speaker: The alongside all this is the
- 19:27Speaker: net zero and the global CO2
- 19:30Speaker: where, you know, the impact of
- 19:32Speaker: that.
- 19:32Speaker: But actually this this isn't moving in that same direction of
- 19:36Speaker: conversation, is it?
- 19:38Speaker: No. So I'm quite optimistic.
- 19:40Speaker: I think the industry has
- 19:41Speaker: actually done a pretty good job
- 19:43Speaker: at lobbying.
- 19:45Speaker: I think the government, in fairness to them, have listened.
- 19:47Speaker: It's early days for the Burnham government, but good sign.
- 19:50Speaker: Um, and let's just get the concept out of the way.
- 19:53Speaker: It's good news because it'll be done before the manufacturers
- 19:56Speaker: finalize their plans for twenty twenty seven, which was, I
- 19:59Speaker: think, critical, to be honest.
- 20:01Speaker: So, um, let's crack on with the consultation.
- 20:03Speaker: Let's, uh, let's assume that the government have right
- 20:07Speaker: intentions, which I actually think they do.
- 20:09Speaker: And let's get this industry back
- 20:11Speaker: to creating jobs, employing
- 20:14Speaker: young people, paying tax
- 20:15Speaker: growing.
- 20:16Speaker: Yeah.
- 20:17Speaker: No, I couldn't agree more.
- 20:18Speaker: Well, coming a little bit more to today.
- 20:21Speaker: And you know, I think we were chatting briefly before we we
- 20:25Speaker: started to record.
- 20:26Speaker: But you know, it's five years since you were the undercover
- 20:29Speaker: boss, which I caught a glimpse of the other day, isn't it.
- 20:33Speaker: I think that was yeah.
- 20:34Speaker: Fantastic.
- 20:34Speaker: Five years last week, five years.
- 20:36Speaker: Can't believe five years.
- 20:38Speaker: But, uh, yeah, congratulations with that one.
- 20:41Speaker: I think you've probably got
- 20:42Speaker: everybody on their toes for it
- 20:43Speaker: happening again.
- 20:44Speaker: He's probably the one Anyway,
- 20:47Speaker: anybody that wasn't within your
- 20:48Speaker: organization.
- 20:50Speaker: I have visited, I have visited twenty percent of the group in
- 20:53Speaker: the last two and a half weeks.
- 20:57Speaker: All right.
- 20:57Speaker: Okay.
- 20:58Speaker: So you get.
- 20:58Speaker: Yeah.
- 20:59Speaker: Right.
- 20:59Speaker: That's, uh, that'll be keep an eye on the times we'll be
- 21:01Speaker: watching out with, uh, does that look like a wig or not?
- 21:04Speaker: Is that.
- 21:05Speaker: Who's that?
- 21:05Speaker: Yeah.
- 21:06Speaker: Well, yeah.
- 21:08Speaker: So I've still got the wig in my office.
- 21:11Speaker: I can imagine you have.
- 21:12Speaker: Yeah.
- 21:12Speaker: It goes on for when you want it to be the um if, when you pop to
- 21:17Speaker: Burnley for your new sponsorship, that would be when
- 21:19Speaker: I was there.
- 21:19Speaker: I was there yesterday.
- 21:20Speaker: Yes.
- 21:21Speaker: Fantastic.
- 21:22Speaker: I mean, you know, we're mid-August now.
- 21:25Speaker: Um, you know, the year twenty twenty six is, is obviously past
- 21:30Speaker: that half year point.
- 21:31Speaker: Now we're heading towards September, you know, crucial
- 21:34Speaker: time of the year for, for everybody within the, uh, the
- 21:37Speaker: sector, you know, the second plate, positive indications from
- 21:41Speaker: the market in terms of order, bank for that plate change.
- 21:44Speaker: What's it looking?
- 21:45Speaker: I think I think it's difficult to say that it's too early.
- 21:48Speaker: Actually, the order bank builds from this point on.
- 21:53Speaker: Yeah.
- 21:53Speaker: Um, from mid-August onwards, I'm not convinced that it's from now
- 21:58Speaker: on that the actions we started our new car event.
- 22:01Speaker: You might have seen the TV ads last Thursday.
- 22:04Speaker: Big event this weekend.
- 22:05Speaker: Another big event next weekend.
- 22:07Speaker: Um, but you know what?
- 22:08Speaker: It's like the days of massive order banks going into a plate
- 22:12Speaker: change month early August.
- 22:14Speaker: You know, we're very much more transactional than that.
- 22:17Speaker: So, you know, you can't comment on September at this point.
- 22:20Speaker: Having said that, the market's been up which is good.
- 22:24Speaker: New car markets growing.
- 22:25Speaker: I think the manufacturers have
- 22:26Speaker: got more focus on retail than
- 22:29Speaker: fleet, which is good news for
- 22:31Speaker: retailers.
- 22:32Speaker: So I think there's a lot to play for.
- 22:34Speaker: Uh, we're certainly putting our
- 22:35Speaker: best foot forward in terms of
- 22:36Speaker: marketing.
- 22:38Speaker: Um, you know, we're at it.
- 22:40Speaker: Um, and I think we've got a lot to be hopeful for, but you can't
- 22:43Speaker: declare victory mid-August.
- 22:44Speaker: You've had some events as well, haven't you?
- 22:46Speaker: Have you had a new car?
- 22:47Speaker: Oh yeah.
- 22:47Speaker: No, we've got a bit.
- 22:48Speaker: We've got a full TV schedule at the moment with new cars.
- 22:52Speaker: Um, we started last Thursday.
- 22:54Speaker: We had a good weekend.
- 22:55Speaker: So you know, we've just got to, to deliver it really.
- 22:59Speaker: And I'm pleased this year with
- 23:00Speaker: how the dealerships have
- 23:01Speaker: performed.
- 23:02Speaker: We actually had a profit upgrade last month or June actually,
- 23:07Speaker: which is, you know, fairly unheard of in the experience of
- 23:11Speaker: the last couple of years.
- 23:12Speaker: So I think, you know, we can be optimistic.
- 23:15Speaker: The fact that we did the came to the rescue of Burnley and are
- 23:18Speaker: now front sponsor front shirt sponsor for them.
- 23:21Speaker: Yeah.
- 23:22Speaker: Um yeah.
- 23:23Speaker: Uh you know, was a quite an
- 23:25Speaker: aggressive move from us, if I'm
- 23:26Speaker: honest.
- 23:27Speaker: Um, clearly it was a distressed situation with regards to the
- 23:30Speaker: club because we had a week to go and no sponsor.
- 23:33Speaker: Um, but you know, it's those
- 23:35Speaker: sort of things that go down very
- 23:36Speaker: well within the colleague base,
- 23:38Speaker: you know, seeing the company on
- 23:39Speaker: the front foot, seeing them on
- 23:40Speaker: the television, it creates
- 23:42Speaker: confidence, which I think is
- 23:43Speaker: important.
- 23:43Speaker: And it creates confidence for
- 23:45Speaker: customers when they see, you
- 23:46Speaker: know, you turn on the
- 23:48Speaker: television, you know, yesterday
- 23:49Speaker: fully televised match, eighteen
- 23:51Speaker: minutes of LED advertising the
- 23:53Speaker: new car event next weekend at
- 23:55Speaker: Donington Park with the British
- 23:56Speaker: Touring Car, thirty five zero
- 23:57Speaker: zero zero people there dominated
- 23:59Speaker: by virtue.
- 24:00Speaker: So we are attacking and putting
- 24:03Speaker: our best foot forward, that's
- 24:04Speaker: for sure.
- 24:05Speaker: Yeah, and definitely in your local market, your customer base
- 24:08Speaker: and everything else.
- 24:10Speaker: So are you.
- 24:10Speaker: I mean, obviously, you know, at
- 24:12Speaker: this point now you're pretty
- 24:14Speaker: you're not going to say
- 24:15Speaker: otherwise knowing you so well
- 24:17Speaker: for so many years, but twenty
- 24:19Speaker: twenty six, you've upgraded your
- 24:21Speaker: profit outlook.
- 24:22Speaker: Yeah, I'm optimistic actually.
- 24:24Speaker: I'm optimistic for the rest of this year.
- 24:27Speaker: I think the business having two managing directors has been a
- 24:29Speaker: benefit to the business.
- 24:31Speaker: We are operationally quite tight.
- 24:33Speaker: I mean, you know, twenty percent of the dealerships in the last
- 24:35Speaker: two and a half, three weeks, it means I've got around.
- 24:38Speaker: I've got a good feel for what's going on.
- 24:40Speaker: Um, I think we're in good form and I think we're enjoying it,
- 24:44Speaker: which is good.
- 24:46Speaker: The fact that Zev mandate looks like it's being consulted on
- 24:49Speaker: also gives everybody a boost.
- 24:51Speaker: Um, we're very stable.
- 24:53Speaker: We've had the three same
- 24:54Speaker: executive directors for two
- 24:56Speaker: decades.
- 24:57Speaker: Yeah.
- 24:57Speaker: And in November, we look forward
- 24:59Speaker: to our twentieth birthday as a
- 25:00Speaker: business.
- 25:01Speaker: When we founded the group in November two thousand and six.
- 25:04Speaker: So plenty to look forward to.
- 25:05Speaker: We are, you know, we are very much at it in terms of selling.
- 25:10Speaker: And we are a selling business at the end of the day.
- 25:13Speaker: Um, and lots of long term things
- 25:15Speaker: going on, you know, lots of
- 25:16Speaker: investment in degree
- 25:17Speaker: apprentices.
- 25:19Speaker: Uh, we're developing a new, uh, graduate program for intake into
- 25:23Speaker: our large fleet businesses.
- 25:25Speaker: Lots of things to get excited about.
- 25:30Speaker: Well, twenty years, Robert.
- 25:32Speaker: I mean, I remember writing about
- 25:34Speaker: this fledgling new group that
- 25:36Speaker: was launching and, uh, I can't
- 25:38Speaker: believe that's two decades ago
- 25:39Speaker: now.
- 25:40Speaker: No, I don't think my wife believes it either.
- 25:46Speaker: Did you give her an indication
- 25:47Speaker: that you were going to be twenty
- 25:48Speaker: years and you'll still be hard
- 25:50Speaker: at it?
- 25:50Speaker: I'm not sure, I told her.
- 25:53Speaker: Uh, but, uh, yeah, no, it's been, uh, let's be honest.
- 25:57Speaker: We've enjoyed it, haven't we?
- 25:58Speaker: It's had its ups and downs.
- 25:59Speaker: We've had global financial
- 26:00Speaker: crises, we've had Covid, we've
- 26:02Speaker: had Dieselgate, we've had Zev
- 26:04Speaker: mandate.
- 26:06Speaker: But that adds to the fun of the job, doesn't it?
- 26:08Speaker: And, you know, we built a nice business.
- 26:10Speaker: It's not completely where it
- 26:11Speaker: needs to be, but it's in good
- 26:13Speaker: form.
- 26:13Speaker: We can, you know, really work hard over the next few months to
- 26:16Speaker: make it even better and deliver a good result this year.
- 26:19Speaker: So to a degree, when you put everything, what you've done,
- 26:24Speaker: where you are size of the business, it you sort of say
- 26:27Speaker: it's only twenty years.
- 26:29Speaker: Twenty years seems a long time, but it's not.
- 26:31Speaker: There's dealerships and groups
- 26:32Speaker: that have been going a lot
- 26:34Speaker: longer.
- 26:35Speaker: So twenty years to, to get to
- 26:37Speaker: the scale and what you've got
- 26:39Speaker: now seven and a half thousand
- 26:40Speaker: employees.
- 26:41Speaker: Yeah, yeah, I've got, you know, two hundred outlets.
- 26:44Speaker: Really.
- 26:45Speaker: Um, but I don't really look at it like that.
- 26:48Speaker: Yeah.
- 26:49Speaker: Um, I think, you know, there's a
- 26:50Speaker: lot to, to do the Chinese
- 26:52Speaker: changes, you know, watch Chinese
- 26:55Speaker: brands.
- 26:55Speaker: How many outlets do we have for each?
- 26:57Speaker: That is a massive transformation.
- 26:59Speaker: That is a really soaking up a lot of time.
- 27:02Speaker: Um, and it needs, needs to be done clearly so that, you know,
- 27:06Speaker: that's a big task, the AI revolution, and I use that word
- 27:10Speaker: advisedly, but I honestly believe it's a revolution.
- 27:15Speaker: I am going at three o'clock to a
- 27:16Speaker: business in Newcastle, actually
- 27:18Speaker: a marketing agency who've done a
- 27:21Speaker: lot of work in AI, and I want to
- 27:23Speaker: see it.
- 27:23Speaker: I'm spending a lot of time going
- 27:25Speaker: to businesses that have got good
- 27:27Speaker: AI.
- 27:27Speaker: Now we think we've got good AI and we have.
- 27:30Speaker: But you've got to learn from other businesses, and it's not
- 27:32Speaker: an area I was ever trained in.
- 27:33Speaker: So, you know, we've got to learn about AI.
- 27:36Speaker: I think AI is absolutely transformational.
- 27:39Speaker: Everything I see tells me this
- 27:41Speaker: is not business as usual in
- 27:43Speaker: terms of AI, and I know it
- 27:45Speaker: sounds like a buzzword, and I
- 27:46Speaker: hope people don't think I'm
- 27:48Speaker: using a buzzword, but honestly
- 27:49Speaker: believe this is going to be
- 27:51Speaker: quite important.
- 27:52Speaker: But I did a talk this morning for three hours to forty new
- 27:55Speaker: managers, and I said, the good news is actually, if you were
- 28:00Speaker: leaving school today, dealership general management, sales
- 28:05Speaker: executives, service advisors, technicians, very hard to see
- 28:10Speaker: how you AI those jobs out.
- 28:12Speaker: Yes, actually, it's quite a good bet.
- 28:15Speaker: Whereas I could name umpteen job
- 28:18Speaker: roles, which would be under
- 28:20Speaker: massive pressure from AI going
- 28:22Speaker: forward, not least, you know,
- 28:23Speaker: massive pressure.
- 28:24Speaker: I won't name them because it'd be unfair.
- 28:26Speaker: But, um, I think dealerships are
- 28:30Speaker: phenomenal businesses, difficult
- 28:32Speaker: markets, always not high margin,
- 28:35Speaker: clearly.
- 28:35Speaker: But if you were a youngster
- 28:38Speaker: today and you were offered a
- 28:39Speaker: degree apprentice with Virtue
- 28:41Speaker: motives.
- 28:41Speaker: So you could be a manager in four or five four years time at
- 28:44Speaker: the age of twenty four, twenty five, or even less.
- 28:48Speaker: Twenty two.
- 28:49Speaker: That would be a good shout.
- 28:51Speaker: Yeah, no, I couldn't agree more.
- 28:52Speaker: I think that's what we've got to
- 28:54Speaker: look at is the world is
- 28:55Speaker: changing.
- 28:56Speaker: Seventy percent of people go to university, which I completely
- 28:59Speaker: disagree with as it happens.
- 29:01Speaker: But we've got to therefore look at what's our intake and how do
- 29:05Speaker: we get graduates to come on.
- 29:06Speaker: And, you know, graduates want
- 29:08Speaker: graduate programs, but they
- 29:09Speaker: don't exist.
- 29:10Speaker: People can't find jobs.
- 29:13Speaker: No, I mean, on the AI, Curtis
- 29:15Speaker: never knows whether he's talking
- 29:16Speaker: to me or my AI clone half the
- 29:19Speaker: time.
- 29:20Speaker: Um, as you as you were saying that, Robert, I was thinking,
- 29:24Speaker: well, actually, um, podcast hosts, they're probably.
- 29:27Speaker: Oh no, I think, I think you're, I think you're, you're majorly
- 29:30Speaker: at risk, Curtis because yes, I know well see me being
- 29:34Speaker: interviewed by Curtis the robot.
- 29:37Speaker: Yeah.
- 29:37Speaker: And you know, it, it looks at the analysis of the industry,
- 29:41Speaker: ask me questions and we wouldn't know the difference.
- 29:44Speaker: Yeah, but we won't be as fun though, wouldn't it?
- 29:46Speaker: Well, it depends how well you.
- 29:50Speaker: Know I think.
- 29:51Speaker: I think, you know you're right.
- 29:52Speaker: I think I mean obviously I've
- 29:53Speaker: been in the industry thirty
- 29:54Speaker: seven plus years now or whatever
- 29:56Speaker: it is.
- 29:57Speaker: And, you know, you just
- 29:58Speaker: mentioned some of those
- 29:59Speaker: challenges around AI and Covid
- 30:01Speaker: and everything else that we've
- 30:02Speaker: been through.
- 30:04Speaker: And there's still more.
- 30:05Speaker: There's still exciting business
- 30:07Speaker: to be in in terms of automotive
- 30:08Speaker: in general.
- 30:09Speaker: So I think anybody coming into this sector, there is a lot for
- 30:13Speaker: them to get involved with.
- 30:14Speaker: And, you know, it's a phenomenal industry.
- 30:16Speaker: I mean, I never wanted to go into automotive sector.
- 30:19Speaker: I never thought I'd be in it, but I wouldn't go anywhere else,
- 30:22Speaker: I don't think.
- 30:23Speaker: And it is a wonderfully eclectic, exciting industry.
- 30:30Speaker: And I think we should look at the positives because everyone
- 30:32Speaker: knows about them.
- 30:32Speaker: But actually it's given a lot of people a very good living,
- 30:35Speaker: actually for many years, and I think we'll continue to do so.
- 30:39Speaker: And coming back to the this Monday.
- 30:41Speaker: That's the problem with the Zev mandate.
- 30:43Speaker: It has appended a very successful sector.
- 30:48Speaker: Yeah, exactly.
- 30:49Speaker: And I rather suspect Robert, that's not the last word on the
- 30:55Speaker: Zev mandate from you.
- 30:56Speaker: We will have you back on at some stage for another update.
- 30:59Speaker: But, uh, you know, from Philip and I, many thanks for coming on
- 31:03Speaker: to the podcast today.
- 31:05Speaker: Um, you know, at short notice.
- 31:06Speaker: Really appreciate that.
- 31:08Speaker: And thanks for spending time with us.
- 31:11Speaker: Absolute pleasure.
- 31:12Speaker: Anytime.
- 31:13Speaker: So many thanks, Robert.
- 31:15Speaker: We're back with the headlines on Saturday morning.
- 31:18Speaker: Until then, it's goodbye from me and it's goodbye from him.
- 31:24Speaker: Thank you for listening to the Motor Trade Radio podcast
- 31:28Speaker: powered by Cazoo.
