- 0:35This is Gracelyn Keller at the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:37Podcast, and we are recording live at the
- 0:40thirty first annual business and operations of ASCs.
- 0:43I'm currently joined by Jerry Eaves, who is
- 0:45the CEO and administrator of Bone and Joint
- 0:48Institute of Tennessee Surgery Center. Jerry, thanks for
- 0:51being here. To start us off, I'll have
- 0:53you introduce yourself and tell us a little
- 0:55bit more about your work in the ASC
- 0:57space.
- 0:59Absolutely. Thank you. And as you said, I
- 1:01am Jeri Eaves. I'm the administrator and CEO
- 1:04at the Bone and Joint Institute of Tennessee
- 1:06and Franklin, Tennessee.
- 1:08We are a six OR
- 1:11surgery center. We do orthopedics and spine.
- 1:14We opened right in the middle of COVID.
- 1:17So, the facility opened five years ago in
- 1:19'20 March 2020.
- 1:22And I myself have been in health care
- 1:24in the ambulatory setting over twenty years,
- 1:28and I did start my career out as
- 1:29a nurse.
- 1:30But I love working on the administrative side
- 1:33and working with operations,
- 1:35and I look forward to our podcast.
- 1:37Wonderful.
- 1:38Well, let's start our conversation with the ASC
- 1:40market because in The US, this is projected
- 1:43to reach $60,800,000,000
- 1:44by 2030,
- 1:46and it continues to experience strong year over
- 1:48year growth. So from your perspective, what are
- 1:50the most significant trends in Market Forces driving
- 1:52this expansion, and how should ASC leaders be
- 1:55preparing today?
- 1:56Absolutely. Great question. So one of the things
- 1:59that we wanna see is large shifts in
- 2:01cases to the ASC outpatient setting.
- 2:04We're gonna see minimally invasive techniques that include
- 2:07robotics
- 2:08and AI. All of those are increasing.
- 2:11This is gonna help us perform more complex
- 2:13cases in the outpatient setting.
- 2:16Cost and managed care contracts are, you know,
- 2:18going to push more cases to the ASCs
- 2:21along with patient performance.
- 2:23Quality metrics are gonna be a huge thing
- 2:25that we're going to focus on.
- 2:27ASC leaders should prepare, you know, they should
- 2:30look at their road map ahead
- 2:32and look at your margins,
- 2:35analyze your case mix, proper profitability
- 2:38margins. Make sure you're looking at all of
- 2:40that because it's going to be huge with
- 2:41some of the the forces that we're dealing
- 2:43with.
- 2:44And from AI and robotic surgeries to advanced
- 2:47EHR systems, technology remains both a make or
- 2:49break factor and a critical driver of ASC
- 2:52operations at scale.
- 2:54So how do you see deeper tech integration
- 2:55shaping the way ASCs deliver care and manage
- 2:58their business over the next few years?
- 3:01Absolutely.
- 3:02So technology is going to redefine what scalable
- 3:05means when we talk about AI and robotic
- 3:08surgeries. We used to just need case mix
- 3:10and efficiency.
- 3:11Now we need data integration,
- 3:13automation,
- 3:14and precision. So a lot of that is
- 3:15just going to be key.
- 3:17Data driven decision making is going to also
- 3:20be one of those things that we're looking
- 3:21at.
- 3:22We're connecting clinical, financial, and operational data, which
- 3:25allows us to have real time visibility in
- 3:27the case cost, surgeon utilization,
- 3:30and quality metrics. We're also able to forecast
- 3:33cancellations,
- 3:34optimize block scheduling,
- 3:36flag high risk patients easier. There's so much
- 3:39going into technology and how we drive our
- 3:41business
- 3:42going forward.
- 3:44And follow-up to that, is there one specific
- 3:46technology or innovation that you would pinpoint as
- 3:49a standout,
- 3:50to being
- 3:51especially transformative?
- 3:53I think robotics is going to be one
- 3:55that I would say is key. Having a
- 3:57personal experience with it myself,
- 3:59it's it helps with recovery,
- 4:02post op,
- 4:04pain control. There's just so many things. It's
- 4:06efficiency in the OR.
- 4:08There's just so many things that I think
- 4:10it's driving. So I'd say robotics.
- 4:12100%.
- 4:13And then with 60% of health systems considering
- 4:16ASC joint ventures, and many ASCs already partnering
- 4:19with systems in their communities, what opportunities do
- 4:22you see for collaboration, whether with other providers
- 4:24or vendors, to strengthen patient care and operational
- 4:27efficiency?
- 4:28So I really think collaborations where the ASCs
- 4:31can can move the needle.
- 4:33Joint ventures with health systems
- 4:35are shifting
- 4:36from ownership to true alignment.
- 4:39We're seeing that that collaboration and that they're
- 4:42working together more.
- 4:44The shifting from ownership to true
- 4:47relationships and alignment, working together to provide a
- 4:50higher standard of care for all of our
- 4:51patients is, truly important.
- 4:54Partnerships with anesthesia groups and vendors can increase
- 4:57supply chain efficiency,
- 4:59keep cost down, and increase case throughput.
- 5:02All of it is
- 5:04things that we have to work together as
- 5:05a team, and the team is not just
- 5:07your immediate team. It's not just your managers
- 5:10or your leaders. It's actually
- 5:12the whole,
- 5:13it's the whole system. It's it's your hospital
- 5:15partner, your your vendors, your if you have
- 5:18a management company, you have to work together
- 5:20with all of these people.
- 5:21Your contracted services, it's all key to to
- 5:24making everything go well and the patient having
- 5:27a great outcome.
- 5:29And, Jeri, is there anything we didn't touch
- 5:31on or any final thoughts you'd like to
- 5:32share as we wrap up our conversation?
- 5:35I do think that integration
- 5:38is the new growth strategy,
- 5:40technology data, and partnerships.
- 5:43Efficiency is going to define our success. Partnerships
- 5:46with everyone as I spoke about is going
- 5:48to build stability,
- 5:50shared resources, stronger community impact. And one of
- 5:53the biggest things is leadership mindset matters. Leaders
- 5:56have to think strategically,
- 5:58invest intentionally, and stay agile as payer models
- 6:01technology
- 6:02and work realities involve. And we have to
- 6:04be in all this together. So doing it
- 6:06all together is going to be key.
- 6:09Well, thank you so much for joining me
- 6:10today on the Becker's Healthcare podcast and sharing
- 6:12these thoughts and insights. Again, we are recording
- 6:15live at the thirty first annual business and
- 6:17operations of ASCs.
