- 2:50We're waiting on her to come back. We're just having a little bit
- 2:52of technical difficulties. But of course today it's all about hair. I am
- 2:57so excited about this show because my daughter has has lots I and my son
- 3:05I don't know what he has the space, so she's gonna help us get
- 3:10on this road to healthy hair. So first, tell us a little bit
- 3:15about yourself. Oh yeah, So my name is Arisha. I'm alone and
- 3:22I have I'm an author, I am a mother, UM, I coach
- 3:28authors as well UM, and most recently I have gotten um into the hair
- 3:34and beauty side of things and created my own hair Caroline UM. And I'm
- 3:39a helping love to help people. Oh so me, And you're just like,
- 3:46yeah, I think that's a man. That show just into my forty
- 3:51so hey, I'm happy about that. Oh new journey, isn't it When
- 3:55you hit forty something just clicks and it's like it's a whole side of life
- 4:00and be like where did all this come from? Yes, yes, I'm
- 4:04three years into that. Then I'm still in the other life because I got
- 4:08an eight year old, so you know, I'll be an empty answer something.
- 4:13My daughter goes out to college this year, so I don't know what
- 4:16to do it myself to be like you when they get older. Okay,
- 4:24we'll see down one another day. So your book is the first time I've
- 4:30ever heard about a hair journey. All I know is we cut it,
- 4:31we fried it, we burn it. I mean, we add on to
- 4:34we take it off, we color it. One minute we want to go
- 4:39natural because we sister Earth, and the next minute we want to just blow
- 4:42it out. Here journey, what is this? Well? Um, I
- 4:47came into the hair journey community, probably back in two thousand and eight,
- 4:55seven or eight, something like that, and I didn't even know it exists,
- 5:00and it um, I did it because my hair had fell out.
- 5:05I damaged it really bad. I bleached it. It was beautiful, don't
- 5:10get me wrong, but I didn't know anything about taking care of bleached hair.
- 5:14So I literally it fell out so and it was the shortest and every
- 5:18being in my life. I didn't know what to do with it. It
- 5:21looked very, very uneven and damage badly. So I decided to look up
- 5:27how how to fix it, and I found hair Journey hair Regiment. All
- 5:32that was on YouTube and it was basically just people who had taken their hair
- 5:38from damage, no matter what length it was too, all the way down
- 5:43to their butt, you know. And I was like, wow, so
- 5:47we can grow hair that long and it was beautiful, sick, it was
- 5:51healthy. And back then it was the relaxed community. There were no naturals
- 5:57on YouTube or anything about aftteral hair. There was really no natural hair products
- 6:01out at the time. But luckily I wasn't a black girl, so I
- 6:06joined the community. So that's how I came into finding out about hair journey
- 6:12and hair regiments. Basically, it's just, um, you know, how
- 6:15you get into a routine of how you do your daily affirmations, or you
- 6:18get into a routine of how you know, I go to work and I
- 6:21do this on routes days, I do this on Fridays. It's like building
- 6:25a routine for your hair. The Black fam way. Um, learning your
- 6:29hair and getting into a routine. Wow. When when you send me that,
- 6:33I was like a hair routine. Ah, I know, it's like
- 6:36get up a curl of that Russian ain't going to do it. Like what,
- 6:40there's a routine. But before we get to the routine, I'm gonna
- 6:44do the question, and everybody asked or you team relax or team natural?
- 6:50Which money? Well I have been both, so I will say that I
- 6:57am team for whatever makes person comfortable and have because I have been on the
- 7:02relaxed side. I have been on the natural side. I've been on the
- 7:08tech relaxed side, which is in the middle of relax and natural. So
- 7:14that is a thing telaxing. So it's basically where you stretch out your relaxing.
- 7:21Um, you go six months, you go a year, you know,
- 7:25two years before you finally just do the new growth only and they call
- 7:29that tex laxing, you know, and you, um, you don't let
- 7:32the relaxing process. Really you kind of under process so it don't do much
- 7:38damage. So I've been on all that side. You know, I called
- 7:43that. I thought that was called just being lazy. But there is an
- 7:46actual Wow, there's an actual term for that. Yeah, that's wow.
- 7:53Okay, see there we go. So I am seen whatever makes a person
- 7:58feel comfortable, um with their hair, you know hermit, the laxet locket,
- 8:05dreaded graded. It's whatever makes you comfortable. You know that at the
- 8:11day, at ny of day, you have to wear it every day African
- 8:15American hair is like one of the most fascinating things I have ever seen.
- 8:20I mean, I really feel that we're only we might be the only race
- 8:24that can run through a whole regiment of hair in a week, you know,
- 8:31and it's crazy. So my next question to you is why did you
- 8:37feel it was important to do a hairdoom. I've never seen this and I
- 8:41actually went on Amazon and look, when you sent me your origin of the
- 8:48hair journal, I was like, I've never seen y'all. She has a
- 8:52search and fine, inside the hair journal, you should see me looking like
- 8:56I've never seen the spot when an Amazon didn't see thing like this. So
- 9:01you have to tell me where that creativity can't true. Um. First,
- 9:05my eyes aside. You know me always wants to create. Um. But
- 9:11I had a lot of people asking me, m, how did you grow
- 9:15your hair? What are you doing to your hair? And I would over
- 9:18the years, I would tell him, Okay, this is this is what
- 9:20I'm doing. Of course it changes every so many years as I learned new
- 9:24things, and um, you know, if you gotta learn your hair to
- 9:26learn what works what don't work, and then once you're here, you um
- 9:31to a certain stage um, you have to then try new products for you
- 9:33know. So I would always tell people here's what I'm doing, and they
- 9:37were like, oh, man, that's just too much to keep up with.
- 9:41I don't have time for that. And so I was like, man,
- 9:43I study's telling people the same things over and over because at the end
- 9:48of the day, it's not what I'm doing to my hair. You know.
- 9:50I can I will tell you what you should be doing. I can't
- 9:52tell exactly what I do because then I work for you. Um. So
- 9:56I decided, well, since a lot of people are as you need this
- 10:00question and I would do lives on Facebook doing my hair, um, why
- 10:05not create something that I can say, hey, here's a way that you
- 10:07can do exactly what I'm doing, but catering to you your life out what
- 10:13will work for your hair, and to educate for the same time. Okay,
- 10:18okay, So that's why it came about, just to help out the
- 10:22people who were asking me like that. I'm gonna be one of them people
- 10:28asking you pretty soon. So before we go to a commercial, I have
- 10:33this question. What is the most most understood part of hair or even hair
- 10:41care in general. What is the main thing that we're we're either missing or
- 10:48truly not understanding. For me, and this was my thing too in the
- 10:52beginning. Um not taking the time to learn your hair. I think that
- 10:58is one of the things that is missing in a lot of us because you
- 11:03see one person's hair texture and oh, I want my hair like that.
- 11:09On Guilty, you see a person using sort of products and you're like,
- 11:13oh, I gotta go use that because they say it adds moisture. But
- 11:16what you did not do was take the time out to learn your hair.
- 11:20Because maybe your hair has moisture, but it doesn't have the protein. You
- 11:26know, even though it's a protein, you know, it's over moisturized.
- 11:28Maybe your hair has too much protein and it's real and practice breaks and it
- 11:33needs more moisture. How do you do that? What are you doing?
- 11:35So? I think learning your hair is the one thing that a lot of
- 11:37us don't take the time I do. He just tried stuff that everybody else
- 11:41is doing without learning. What do my hair need right now? Okay,
- 11:46you guys thought if you're talking about that, you guys, let me tell
- 11:50you. She has named the different hairs, and then she gave the character
- 11:54names. You guys, I think one of them I saw was Ari,
- 12:00and then it was Sonya and michaela huh and and the last one was oh
- 12:07gosh, you had to ask me now no, oh god, she has
- 12:13them. Each one has a different text. So it's Ari with Kayla,
- 12:18Fanya and Keisha. That's it. How can I be Abisha? Can I
- 12:24do a little sneep peep, just a little sleep? Yeah, y'all,
- 12:28y'all, look, it's it's crazy. I know it's not good, but
- 12:31it's crazy, you guys. It's it's beautiful. I love this. So
- 12:35we're gonna take a break and we're coming back. I am just so excited
- 12:37because as a reviewer and as a reader, and I've been reading for this
- 12:43is going on nineteen years, I've never seen anything like this. So I
- 12:46am so excited. So we're coming back. We're gonna ask you some more
- 12:50questions. Get to know a little bit more about this here we got on
- 12:52our head. Stay tuned, you guys, come on back to us.
- 13:00Mm hm, oh my god, I'm so excited. I'm so exciting.
- 13:09I need to get your bookwork. You need to get your book reviews or
- 13:16do you want a little bit more. I need to get your book reviews.
- 14:09Welcome back, you guys. So we're gonna bring our guests right back
- 14:15up and we're going to ask her about being an author. So we know
- 14:18about the hair part. So now we're gonna ask her about being an author.
- 14:22Coach, Off the coach and the smeller tell us about because I know
- 14:26we have a lot of authors who watched my show, who watched the replays,
- 14:31and they even asked me questions that I really don't know about being an
- 14:35author. I'm more along the lines of a reader. So as an author
- 14:39coach, can you tell them a little bit about that getting So what I
- 14:43have done over the past fifteen years of my career as an author is helped
- 14:48a lot of other authors to become authors. I even help people sort of
- 14:52publishing companies and all kinds of stuff, you know, book club, all
- 14:58kind of thing. So with a lot of people come to me to ask
- 15:01you questions like hey, how, how, how um, where do I
- 15:05begin? What do I do? Now? You know in these three stages
- 15:09of writing, you know, of being an author, to writing, the
- 15:11publishing, and then the marketing, So people are totally different each category.
- 15:16So I was like, well, let me do it. So I had
- 15:20a publishing company. And when my health kind of deteriorating got a little bad
- 15:24for a moment, I could shut that down and I said, maybe I
- 15:28couldn't do too much stress what the doctor said. So I was like,
- 15:30well, maybe I can just help people individually or in like smaller book setting.
- 15:35And that's how I became a coach. I began to help authors with
- 15:41the writing, the publishing, and what I knew about marketing. Okay,
- 15:48how it came about? So? Um, As a writer, what do
- 15:54you feel as the most important important part of the writing? Um? I
- 15:58see a lot of authors they say they get they think of their title before
- 16:03they think of the plot. I'm like, okay, some people think of
- 16:07their characters before they think of the block. So which one is the most
- 16:12important? I really don't feel like either or could be most important, because
- 16:18I think everybody has their own unique writing style. You know that that helps
- 16:23them their writing moves. They're writing mantra, you know what they need to
- 16:29get in the mood or even to write in general. I know for me,
- 16:32I am a title girl. UM. I'll come up with the title,
- 16:37and then I'll come up with a concept. But then I'll come up
- 16:41with a concept. Then then I'll come up with a title. Um.
- 16:42So all depends on how I feel my move, what I feel like writing.
- 16:48Um. And I've come up with titles, wrote it out and then
- 16:52changed it. The title you don't like that don't fit now, you know.
- 16:56So I think the most important thing, if I had to say between
- 17:00any of that is neither one. I think the most important thing is to
- 17:03hone your craft, continue to write, learn your writing style and learn that
- 17:07um. Because once you do that, then it'll be a little bit easier
- 17:11as time goes on. Because if you don't know your writing style, you
- 17:14haven't so did your craft and learned anything that the stuff that you can know
- 17:17about just basic things in writing in general. Um. It can't get a
- 17:19little overwhelming. It can become frustrating, and that title will sit there,
- 17:26that plot would just sit there. You know, it will never be touched.
- 17:30Oh okay, Well, I think the most important things one your craft
- 17:33and continue writing. All right, craft, okay, cool off? Question
- 17:40what is your favorite my favorite genre? To what now to write? Oh?
- 17:45So right? Um, I love writing young adults. Um, and
- 17:55anything that relays some sticking strictly social issue, whether it's at a younger adult
- 18:00or you know, fucking bray. So I find myself easier to right young
- 18:04ago. Well, we're going at the library. I used to working in.
- 18:10Young agols still help out and that is a very very quick, becoming
- 18:18more popular genre. And then you added on social issues. That's one of
- 18:23the biggest things when it comes to younger Yeah. So you look like you
- 18:33yeah yeah, I feel like you know, if they're gonna read the book,
- 18:37not only make it any painting, but about Okay, so let me
- 18:41ask you a question. Who's your favorite author out there? Oh? Okay?
- 18:48Um? Well, if I had to pick okay, thank you.
- 18:53Um. If I had to pick my favorite author, um, I will
- 18:57have to say I love Ronda Night. I love her books. She has
- 19:03a Christian field, but it's still relatable. I love her books. Um.
- 19:07I also love Channia Green Daniel. That's who one of my favorites.
- 19:11Okay, yes, and I'm I'm a big Carl Webber fatto soo oh she
- 19:18hit it with the nick I would say my favorite out of all, I
- 19:22would say even with those three, my my top top favorite who trump in
- 19:26all will be Nikki Turner. You know I love her. I love love
- 19:30love her books. Black that my top three, but Nikki she will surpass
- 19:36all of that. Yes, yes, she was one of the ones along
- 19:38with Arkia Clark. When I first start of working in the libraries, I
- 19:42think I books like this, that was not where it was not like that.
- 19:48It really, Yes, I learned about her. Do you remember getting
- 19:55those things in the mill and you can pick like six books for like flup
- 19:59Virtue was it Urban Expressions? Yes, this wasn't like That's how I found
- 20:06out about a lot of um the authors that I did learn about, um,
- 20:11I can't I don't know if their name right, but Noriri okay,
- 20:17so I could never crown pronounce the name. But I found her through there
- 20:21and I was very skillful about that book. Until I read it was like
- 20:23it's not what I thought. You know more stuff? Are you talking about
- 20:32the throng on Fire? Because that was my that was my favorite too.
- 20:37Yeah. I saw the child. I was like, well hold up,
- 20:40and I remember getting that little paper in the mill and you signed up for
- 20:45the books and every one, every two three months, they'll send you another
- 20:48set of books. That was it. That was it, that was the
- 20:52life man like And I started king like I don't need this anymore. I
- 20:57can gonna library use my card. Where I come from, you know,
- 21:02there was not a huge African American section, and the ones the African American
- 21:06section that was there were like like older, Like he would see the Maya
- 21:11Angela talking about Angelo. You would see um, you know those popular names
- 21:15like that. But just to see someone like her or even way Peta or
- 21:19Nikki, like, none of those people were put in that library at all.
- 21:23So for me, that was how I was exposed, you know to
- 21:29other African American authors. And I missed that, ye and and and that's
- 21:34that's why I do what I do, because a lot of the authors that
- 21:38I remember, um uh, Nikki Giovanni, your hat, your Sheila Moss
- 21:47and you know, the nice little subdued book. Then I saw that book
- 21:52sitting on the shelf and then I saw the cover and that was it.
- 21:56And so that started I love for reading. And yes, I still go
- 22:02back and I read those classics, and I still go back and read the
- 22:04Christian fiction. It was something about that gritty urban fiction that grabbed me and
- 22:10hold me for all a while. So if you could be mentored now I
- 22:15know you're off the coach. But if you could be mentored by an author,
- 22:19who would it be? It would be between Nikki and hard Girl.
- 22:29One of those two. I love to just fit and pick their brains and
- 22:34just talk because I know, I really really love they're writing, and I
- 22:40think I like it because of the issues that they address. You know,
- 22:45of course you get the entertainment, but again, you really get that issue,
- 22:48you know. Yes, yes, so I like stuff like that though.
- 22:53So we're about the wine down. So I want to know what would
- 22:57you like to say to your current readers and your new readers because you're about
- 23:03the games. Would you like to say to them? Oh? Man?
- 23:08So for my current readers, I have to say thank you always for supporting
- 23:12a girl like me, you know um. And to any new readers,
- 23:18hey, I'm open, enjoy a ride. I'm feel afraid to tell me
- 23:25anything, criticize and please help me. Allright? So before we leave,
- 23:33I want you to be able to have your readers, current new people who
- 23:37would like to get helping you, like to pick your brain from knowledge.
- 23:41How will they be able to contact you if they would like to? Okay,
- 23:47So I my website is clearly down as I upgrade and updates and stuff.
- 23:52Um, I'm mostly on Facebook more than Instagram or TikTok, so I
- 23:57would say every from on Facebook. Um, it's just my name, you
- 24:00know, Latisha Malan, and they can reach me there. I'm always on
- 24:04there. Like I said, I'm always doing hair video. So you guys,

- 24:32hair Caroline that I have, so I've been growing that and as a way
- 24:37to introduce the book, like the graded version of the book, because you
