- 0:00Speaker 1: The Propers of the Day. According to the Roman Missal before 1955. The Vigil of Saints Simon and Jude, October 27 in the year of our Lord, 2026. Of this vigil, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes, Simon, whom Saint Matthew called the Canaanian to distinguish him from Saint Peter who bore the same name was born at Cana in Galilee. Saint Luke calls him the Zealot because he had probably belonged to the Jewish party.
- 0:45Thus called for its zeal in defending the faith. Jude surnamed Thaddeus or Lebe the courageous was by Cleophus his father and Mary his mother a nephew to Saint Joseph and the blessed Virgin and cousin to Jesus. Saint James, the less first bishop of Jerusalem and the first apostle martyred and Simon who succeeded him in this sea were his brothers. These apostles of Christ heard from the lips of the master at the last supper the words of the gospel. I am the vine.
- 1:29You are the branches. Every branch which bears fruit, my father shall prune in order that it should bear more. After having preached the gospel at the price of great sufferings, the first in Egypt, the second in Mesopotamia, they were both martyred at Sunnir. Wherefore their feasts are celebrated on the same day in the same office and their names are mentioned jointly in the canon of the mass. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
- 2:13Amen. The introit. Let the sighing of the prisoners come in before thee, O Lord, render to our neighbors sevenfold in their bosom. Revenge the blood of thy saints which hath been shed. O God, the heathen have come into your inheritance.
- 2:38They have defiled your holy temple. They have laid Jerusalem in ruins. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. Let the sighing of the prisoners come in before thee, O Lord, render to our neighbours sevenfold in their bosom, revenge the blood of thy saint which hath been shed.
- 3:17The Collect, let us pray. O Almighty God, grant we beseech thee, that even as we by our devotion anticipate the glorious festival of thine apostles, Simon and Jude, so they may draw down upon us thy benefits through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the first letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians. Brethren, we have been made a spectacle to the whole creation, men and angels alike.
- 4:12We are fools for Christ's sake. You are so wise. We are so helpless. You so stout of heart. You are held in honor while we are despised.
- 4:30Still, as I write, we go hungry and thirsty and naked. We are mishandled. We have no home to settle in. We are hard put to it, working with our own hands. Men revile us, and we answer with a blessing, persecute us, and we make the best of it.
- 4:56Speak ill of us, and we fall to entreaty. We are still the world's refuse. Everybody thinks himself well rid of us. I am not writing this to shame you. You are my dearly loved children, and I would bring you to a better mind in Christ Jesus, our Lord.
- 5:23The gradual. Revenge, o Lord, the blood of thy saints which hath been shed. O Lord, they have thrown the corpses of thy servants to feed all the birds of heaven. Wild beasts prey on the carrion of the just. A continuation of the holy gospel according to John.
- 5:52At that time Jesus said to his disciples, I am the true vine and it is my father who tends it. The branch that yields no fruit in me, he cuts away. The branch that does yield fruit, he trims clean so that it may yield more fruit. You, through the message I have preached to you, are clean already. You have only to live on in me and I will live on in you.
- 6:30The branch that does not live on in the vine can yield no fruit of itself. No more can you if you do not live on in me. I am the vine. You are its branches. If a man lives on in me and I in him then he will yield abundant fruit.
- 6:57Separated from me you have no power to do anything. If a man does not live on in me he can only be like the branch that is cast off and withers away. Such a branch is picked up and thrown into the fire to burn there. As long as you live on in me and my words live on in you you will be able to make what request you will and have it granted. The offertory.
- 7:38The saints shall rejoice in glory. They shall be joyful in their beds. The high praises of God shall be in their mouths. The secret. We anticipate with pure offerings, O Lord, the feast of thy holy apostles, Simon and Jude, most humbly begging of thee that our ministering at thine altar, which our conscience reproaches us with having sullied by our evil deeds, may through the merits of thy Saints become pleasing to thee through our Lord Jesus Christ thy Son who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost God through all ages of ages.
- 8:35Amen. The Common Preface Just it is indeed and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the powers stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven, together with the blessed Seraphim, joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, the heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
- 9:44Hosanna in the highest. The communion. They have thrown the corpses of thy servants to feed all the birds of heaven. Wild beasts prey on the carrion of the just. Could but the groaning of the captive reach thy presence?
- 10:09Thy arm has not lost its strength. From our bonds deliver us a race doomed to die. The post communion let us pray. Through the intercession of thy blessed apostles Simon and Jude we humbly ask, O Lord, of thee who hast bestowed thy divine sacrament upon us, that our having ministered to thee in this our day may profit us for a happy eternity through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 11:07In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen. Let us bless the Lord. Saint Simon the Zealot, pray for us. Saint Jude Thaddeus, pray for us.
