Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: On Recognizing Your Past To Really Appreciate Your Present
Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey everyone, it's Emily a body here coming to you
- 0:23Speaker 1: live from the AG studio. You are listening to another
- 0:26Speaker 1: installment A five minute Friday from Hurdle. I realized this
- 0:33Speaker 1: week how much time I spend in my apartment and
- 0:38Speaker 1: I get it right, Like I have been working from
- 0:42Speaker 1: home here now I have a dedicated office space. I
- 0:45Speaker 1: am so happy with it. I love working from here.
- 0:49Speaker 1: But I, aside from my run, can go during the week,
- 0:53Speaker 1: like from Monday to Friday, basically with just being here,
- 0:59Speaker 1: waking up, up, working out, maybe seeing other people during
- 1:02Speaker 1: that workout, coming back home, getting to work, making dinner,
- 1:07Speaker 1: being on the couch. You know, just it's a cycle, right.
- 1:11Speaker 1: And on Wednesday, I had a meeting or two in Manhattan,
- 1:15Speaker 1: and I was sitting on Park Avenue in between the
- 1:17Speaker 1: two meetings eating lunch, when I was kind of blown
- 1:21Speaker 1: away with just like how insane and buzzy the city was.
- 1:25Speaker 1: The thing about Midtown is that obviously a lot of
- 1:27Speaker 1: offices are in Midtown, and that means at lunchtime, like
- 1:30Speaker 1: the streets are buzzing, co workers are walking together, There's
- 1:34Speaker 1: lines outside of all of the restaurants, and like the
- 1:36Speaker 1: fast casual places and it's just like kind of a scene.
- 1:40Speaker 1: And there I was sitting there thinking to myself that
- 1:43Speaker 1: I had no idea that this was fully back, so
- 1:46Speaker 1: to speak, Like, I know that New York is back,
- 1:48Speaker 1: and there are people everywhere, and rent is higher than
- 1:50Speaker 1: it's ever been, and we're you know, going out to
- 1:54Speaker 1: eat like we used to. But for some reason, like
- 1:56Speaker 1: I had just kind of assumed that so many people
- 1:59Speaker 1: were for the most part working from home like me,
- 2:02Speaker 1: and I don't know, I guess this is just like
- 2:05Speaker 1: a total perception is your reality moment. Anyway, as I
- 2:08Speaker 1: was sitting there and thinking about the fact that I
- 2:10Speaker 1: probably need to get out a little bit more, I
- 2:12Speaker 1: also couldn't help but think about how I've grown to
- 2:16Speaker 1: be this person that I don't know really what I
- 2:20Speaker 1: thought that I would become. But I'm really proud of
- 2:24Speaker 1: where I'm at. I started as an editorial assistant making
- 2:30Speaker 1: thirty four thousand dollars a year, didn't make enough money
- 2:33Speaker 1: to move into New York City, and now I live
- 2:38Speaker 1: in a two bedroom all my own in Brooklyn, which,
- 2:41Speaker 1: as I said, I probably need to at times get
- 2:45Speaker 1: out of a little bit more. I've built a business
- 2:49Speaker 1: and a name for myself, and I've worked with brands
- 2:52Speaker 1: that I dreamed of working with forever, and I did
- 2:58Speaker 1: all of this and it feels really freaking good, you know,
- 3:03Speaker 1: it feels really good. And I try to come back
- 3:07Speaker 1: to that in the moments where it could be easy
- 3:10Speaker 1: to get down on myself about the things that aren't happening,
- 3:13Speaker 1: or maybe quote unquote, when I'm not doing enough of
- 3:16Speaker 1: i e leaving my home. It's all happening, right, It's
- 3:22Speaker 1: all happening for a reason. I've got to trust the process.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Maybe I've got to stop by Midtown every once in
- 3:28Speaker 1: a while to remember the beginning and to keep my
- 3:33Speaker 1: eyes on where I'm going. My prompt for you this week,
- 3:37Speaker 1: what is one thing that you are doing right now
- 3:40Speaker 1: in your life that a younger you would never even
- 3:45Speaker 1: have dreamt of? Again, what is one thing you are
- 3:49Speaker 1: doing right now in your life that a younger you
- 3:52Speaker 1: could not have even dreamt of or maybe would have
- 3:55Speaker 1: really freaked out about. And now for your question.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Hi, Emily, my name is Juliana from Virginia. My question
- 4:05Speaker 2: for you is, now that the days are getting shorter,
- 4:08Speaker 2: it's getting a little cooler, how do you cope or
- 4:12Speaker 2: deal with the times when you just feel bone tired.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Maybe you're sleeping well enough and you're feeling okay, but
- 4:21Speaker 2: there's something just about this time of year that makes
- 4:24Speaker 2: I think most of us pretty tired, and it can
- 4:26Speaker 2: be off putting and a little bit hard to keep
- 4:29Speaker 2: your motivation up. So I'm curious what you do at
- 4:32Speaker 2: times like that to keep your energy high, keep yourself focused,
- 4:36Speaker 2: and ultimately keep yourself happy. Thank you, hey, Juliana.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I think we can all really really relate to this.
- 4:44Speaker 1: So you're right, this time of year can be a struggle.
- 4:48Speaker 1: And my biggest piece of advice to beat the days
- 4:53Speaker 1: where you just feel like a blob and you feel
- 4:55Speaker 1: tired and you just don't feel like doing anything is
- 4:57Speaker 1: planning ahead. That's does it mean that it's not okay
- 5:01Speaker 1: to take some time for you. I think that's a
- 5:04Speaker 1: really important thing to note about this time of year
- 5:08Speaker 1: is that there are a lot of other important things
- 5:10Speaker 1: going on, family obligations or work things trying to wrap
- 5:15Speaker 1: up for the year, and in doing that, those can
- 5:18Speaker 1: be exciting and fun but also super stressful, and so
- 5:22Speaker 1: you need to listen to your body about what you're
- 5:24Speaker 1: actually ready to take on. But if it's just this
- 5:27Speaker 1: feeling that you're trying to kick in the butt again.
- 5:30Speaker 1: My suggestion is planning ahead, plan your week of workouts,
- 5:33Speaker 1: if that's what we're talking about here at the beginning
- 5:36Speaker 1: of the week right now, in between goals, trying to
- 5:39Speaker 1: figure out exactly what I want to do next. More
- 5:42Speaker 1: on that in an upcoming episode. I find it really
- 5:47Speaker 1: motivating to have my week of workouts set in stone
- 5:51Speaker 1: before Monday morning even hits that way, just kind of
- 5:55Speaker 1: like laying out your workout clothes ahead of time. It's
- 5:57Speaker 1: one less thing to think about, knowing that I want
- 6:00Speaker 1: to move my body and having to make that decision
- 6:03Speaker 1: in the moment. I also, by planning ahead, can diversify
- 6:07Speaker 1: what I have on deck right, which is something that
- 6:10Speaker 1: I wasn't doing as much when I was myself training
- 6:13Speaker 1: for a marathon. Now I'm looking at going back to classes.
- 6:17Speaker 1: That's something that you can do if you feel comfortable,
- 6:20Speaker 1: incorporating the peloton, going on a run or two a week,
- 6:24Speaker 1: strength training, just a bunch of different things that make
- 6:27Speaker 1: me excited, and to be honest, it's kind of fun
- 6:29Speaker 1: to feel a little bit like a beginner again. In
- 6:32Speaker 1: some ways, I'm looking forward to getting stronger, and I
- 6:35Speaker 1: know that in getting stronger and in giving back to
- 6:38Speaker 1: my body, hopefully over time, I'm going to feel a
- 6:42Speaker 1: little less tired. Also, making your movement practice part of
- 6:46Speaker 1: your morning routine another huge, huge help. So if you
- 6:50Speaker 1: are one of those people that needs to really get
- 6:52Speaker 1: up and wake up before you can give any sort
- 6:56Speaker 1: of movement your full energy, establish some things that help
- 6:59Speaker 1: you get in the mood, so to speak, whether that's
- 7:02Speaker 1: journaling and sipping your coffee and maybe listening to a podcast.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Those are all three things in my morning routine that
- 7:08Speaker 1: I do without fail before I go to move and
- 7:11Speaker 1: it kind of sets the tone for where I'm going.
- 7:14Speaker 1: So try it out, let me know how it goes.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Make sure you're following along with Hurdle Over at Hurdle podcast.
