- 1:40it really does.
- 1:41Series five, show 26.
- 1:42The episode tonight is Understanding the Hidden Growth
- 1:46Phase, series five, show 26, episode three.
- 1:49And our theme in that is building in
- 1:51silence.
- 1:53When we're silent, we're actually doing more than
- 1:56we think.
- 1:57So welcome, everyone, once again to Inspirations For
- 1:59Your Life.
- 2:00I am John C.
- 2:02Morley, serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video producer,
- 2:06podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, passionate lifelong learner,
- 2:12graduate student at Montgomery State University, yes, and
- 2:15so grateful to now be a published author.
- 2:18All right, everyone.
- 2:20So today, I'm focusing on something most people
- 2:22misunderstand.
- 2:24What is that?
- 2:25The hidden growth phase.
- 2:28This is the stage where real progress happens
- 2:31without any signs of visibility, and where most
- 2:35people quit early because they cannot yet see
- 2:39any results, right?
- 2:41We said the difference between success and non
- 2:44-success is successful people just have learned to
- 2:47hang on just a second or two longer.
- 2:50Our core message is about growth, and it
- 2:53does not always announce itself.
- 2:55So people are like, oh, I guess I
- 2:56shouldn't do anymore.
- 2:57In fact, the most important stages are often
- 2:59silent.
- 3:01This is where discipline is tested, patience is
- 3:04built, and identity is formed.
- 3:07What you cannot see is often what is
- 3:09shaping everything.
- 3:12Everything, guys.
- 3:13That's really, really important.
- 3:16So let's get right into the insights that
- 3:19I think will really change your life, all
- 3:21right?
- 3:21Number one, not all progress is visible during
- 3:25growth, unfortunately, guys.
- 3:27Some of the most important development happens without
- 3:31any outward signs, clues, or directions, or anything.
- 3:36So I think that can be hard for
- 3:37some people because they're like, I don't see
- 3:39anything yet.
- 3:40So they figure, well, I'm just going to
- 3:42stop because I don't see anything, and that's
- 3:44going to be a problem because you're going
- 3:46to miss something.
- 3:47Number two, silence often means construction is happening.
- 3:51Just because nothing is visible does not mean
- 3:54nothing is being built.
- 3:56Number three, growth can look identical to stagnation
- 4:00in the beginning.
- 4:01Early progress often feels, well, like nothing is
- 4:05changing at all.
- 4:06Number four, strong foundations are built in quiet
- 4:09conditions.
- 4:10Stability is created when there is no pressure
- 4:13for immediate results.
- 4:16Number five, recognition is not required for improvement.
- 4:20You can grow significantly without anyone ever noticing,
- 4:25and that's okay.
- 4:26Number six, mastery develops before results appear.
- 4:31Skill is formed long before success becomes visible,
- 4:35and it's that nurturing that I think makes
- 4:37the big difference for a lot of people.
- 4:40And I think that's a huge thing for
- 4:43so many people, the way that works and
- 4:45how that can really cultivate and actually change
- 4:48your life.
- 4:49But a lot of people, they go home
- 4:51early, unfortunately.
- 4:54They don't see anything.
- 4:55They don't see a light.
- 4:56They don't get a signal.
- 4:57They don't hear anything.
- 4:59They don't feel anything.
- 4:59So they just go home early.
- 5:02Number seven, outcomes always lag behind the effort.
- 5:06Unfortunately, guys, you put the effort in, outcome
- 5:10doesn't show up right away.
- 5:11What you see today is the result of
- 5:14past discipline.
- 5:17And I think a lot of people expect
- 5:18that if you put the effort in today
- 5:20that you're going to see results tomorrow.
- 5:22And I want to tell you guys, you're
- 5:23not going to see results tomorrow.
- 5:25Unfortunately, guys, I just want to tell you
- 5:27that because it's important that you understand how
- 5:31that works because hopefully that'll motivate you to
- 5:34keep wanting to go on.
- 5:36Number eight, repetition matters most when it feels
- 5:40boring.
- 5:41Consistency during low motivation periods is where growth
- 5:45actually starts to emerge and happen.
- 5:48A lot of people don't understand that one
- 5:51thing, but I want to tell you how
- 5:53key that is.
- 5:54It's a very, very big key thing that
- 5:57I think a lot of people just get
- 5:58stuck on.
- 6:00So that's an important thing to absolutely understand.
- 6:04Number nine, lack of feedback does not mean
- 6:07lack of progress.
- 6:09Silence is not an indicator of failure, guys.
- 6:13Number 10, invisible work carries long-term value.
- 6:18What is unseen often becomes the strongest foundation.
- 6:23Number 11, early stages are designed to feel
- 6:26slow.
- 6:27This phase tests patience more than, well, the
- 6:31performance.
- 6:33And it can shut people down because they
- 6:35don't think they have a chance, but actually,
- 6:38guys, they really have more chances than most
- 6:42people ever knew was possible.
- 6:45So I think that's a very important thing.
- 6:49All right.
- 6:49Let's dive into the next point.
- 6:51Number 12, patience is part of the system,
- 6:54not optional.
- 6:55You cannot skip waiting and still expect growth.
- 6:58It's like you can't cut corners, right?
- 7:01You have to do what's necessary every single
- 7:04time.
- 7:06I think that hurts a lot of people
- 7:08to understand that.
- 7:11So let's get to number 13.
- 7:14Silence should not be mistaken for failure.
- 7:18Stillness often means internal development.
- 7:22And that's something that a lot of people,
- 7:24like, they don't get, all right?
- 7:28They don't get that.
- 7:30And a lot of people say to me,
- 7:32hey, how's that going to work?
- 7:33How's that not going to work?
- 7:34Or why is this going that way?
- 7:37And it's because of basically your mindset.
- 7:41Your mindset creates your reality.
- 7:44We've said this so many times, but I'm
- 7:46hoping if you hear it enough times, you're
- 7:48like, oh, right, John, now I believe you.
- 7:49Well, it's not a case of whether you
- 7:51believe me or not.
- 7:53It's a case of do you understand how
- 7:55and why it works?
- 7:56I think that's probably one of the most
- 7:59important things that I can actually tell you
- 8:01is that it matters how it works to
- 8:04you, all right?
- 8:04That's probably a very important thing.
- 8:06Number 14, hidden effort creates future leverage.
- 8:10What you do privately builds public results later.
- 8:14And you're not doing it so you can
- 8:16boast about it.
- 8:17You're practicing it in your own space.
- 8:21And then you go out and share that,
- 8:23right?
- 8:23I think that's a very important thing for
- 8:27a lot of people to understand that you
- 8:30can do that.
- 8:31But again, it takes time.
- 8:34It takes intention.
- 8:36I think that's a big thing.
- 8:39When we take time, we understand why things
- 8:43are working or why they're not working.
- 8:45I think that's probably one of the biggest
- 8:47things I can say to all you guys
- 8:48is that most people want to go out
- 8:50and do things publicly.
- 8:51And I don't have a problem with that.
- 8:53But what happens when you do that is
- 8:55you're doing it for the wrong reasons.
- 8:57You're doing it to impress someone.
- 8:59You should be doing it for yourself, not
- 9:02to put on a show.
- 9:04A lot of people do things because of
- 9:06a big, quote, unquote, ego, right?
- 9:09That's what they do.
- 9:10They do it because of a big ego.
- 9:11And that's a very important thing to actually
- 9:17understand, that it's because of that big ego.
- 9:21Number 15, momentum exists before it becomes visible.
- 9:25Progress starts internally before it shows externally.
- 9:30That's important.
- 9:31Number 16, delayed results are part of natural
- 9:36growth cycles, right?
- 9:38Nothing to get alarmed about.
- 9:40Timing always lags behind the effort.
- 9:43And I know a lot of you are
- 9:44saying, well, you know, John, I put this
- 9:46effort, and it's been for so long.
- 9:47But when am I going to see the
- 9:48results?
- 9:49I can't tell you that.
- 9:51But what I can tell you is that
- 9:52if you keep on keeping on, it reminds
- 9:55me of a story.
- 9:56Do you guys remember?
- 9:57It was actually The Little Engine That Could.
- 10:02Do you guys remember that, The Little Engine
- 10:04That Could?
- 10:04So The Little Engine That Could was a
- 10:08book I really enjoyed.
- 10:09There are a lot of books I enjoyed,
- 10:10but this was one I really enjoyed.
- 10:12So The Little Engine That Could is a
- 10:14children's story about a small blue engine that
- 10:16bravely pulls a stranded train filled with toys
- 10:20over a mountain after larger engines refuse to
- 10:23help.
- 10:24The engine's determination and mantra, I think I
- 10:27can, I think I can, I think I
- 10:28can, I think I can, I think I
- 10:30can, illustrate the values of pure optimism and
- 10:33hard work.
- 10:34Now, The Little Engine That Could is a
- 10:36classic children's story that emphasizes the importance of
- 10:38optimism and perseverance.
- 10:41It features a small blue engine that takes
- 10:44on the challenge of pulling stranded train filled
- 10:48with toys over a mountain after larger, more
- 10:51powerful engines refuse to help.
- 10:52And so the plot is a train carrying
- 10:54toys for children breaks down at the foot
- 10:57of a mountain.
- 10:58Several larger engines pass by and decline to
- 11:01help, each citing reasons such as vanity or
- 11:04exhaustion, et cetera.
- 11:05A small blue engine, despite its size and
- 11:09doubts about its strength, agrees to help the
- 11:12stranded train.
- 11:14As The Little Engine begins its ascent, it
- 11:17repeatedly chants its mantra, I think I can,
- 11:19I think I can, I think I can.
- 11:21Though determination and hard work and through a
- 11:25lot of perseverance, The Little Engine successfully pulls
- 11:27the train over the mountain, delivering the toys
- 11:31for the waiting children.
- 11:33Optimism is a big key.
- 11:36The Little Engine's belief in its ability to
- 11:38succeed is central to the story.
- 11:41The narrative illustrates that effort and determination can
- 11:44lead to success, regardless of one's size or
- 11:47perceived limitations.
- 11:49This story has become a beloved tale for
- 11:51generations, teaching children valuable lessons about resilience and
- 11:55power of positive thinking.
- 11:57And that's a very important thing, guys, for
- 12:00us to understand.
- 12:01We have stories like that.
- 12:03I still remember, you know, what the train
- 12:05looked like.
- 12:08It was pretty cool.
- 12:09I mean, I read this many, many years
- 12:12ago.
- 12:13But The Little Engine, it was basically this
- 12:16blue engine.
- 12:19And there were even animals on the side.
- 12:21And it was just a very interesting thing,
- 12:24you know, of how it worked and how
- 12:27the engine was really tired.
- 12:29But the engine just kept giving all it
- 12:31could.
- 12:32And at the last moment, the engine actually
- 12:36succeeded.
- 12:37And that's pretty priceless, guys.
- 12:40Number 17, you do not need validation to
- 12:43keep improving.
- 12:44You don't need somebody to tell you you're
- 12:46doing good, right?
- 12:48You don't need a pat on the back.
- 12:49A lot of people go home early because
- 12:52they think they need the pat on the
- 12:54back.
- 12:54When they don't get the pat on the
- 12:55back, well, they go home.
- 12:58They give up, right?
- 13:01Instead of improving.
- 13:03External approval is not required for progress.
- 13:05But many people wait for it.
- 13:09Well, I'm waiting for it.
- 13:10I'm waiting for it.
- 13:11And then they just don't grow because of
- 13:14that one thing.
- 13:16They never get the pat on the back.
- 13:19But in life, you don't get pats on
- 13:21the back all the time.
- 13:22You have to be your own cheerleader or
- 13:25cheerleaders, right?
- 13:26I think that's an important thing to understand,
- 13:29that you have to be your own cheerleaders,
- 13:32right?
- 13:34That's an important thing, guys, what it's about.
- 13:38And I think a lot of people don't
- 13:44understand that.
- 13:45They don't understand what it's about.
- 13:47And I will tell you guys that most
- 13:51people will probably give up before they've even
- 13:56come close to succeeding.
- 13:59And that's something that's pretty wild, guys, that
- 14:04people do it that way.
- 14:05They don't realize the power, the strength that
- 14:09they have within them.
- 14:10They just don't realize it.
- 14:12And I wanna tell you that a lot
- 14:15of people don't understand all this, okay?
- 14:20So what they do is they just, they
- 14:25give up.
- 14:27They give up day in and day out.
- 14:30Okay?
- 14:33And I know, guys, that that's a very
- 14:36tough thing for a lot of people, all
- 14:39right?
- 14:39A very tough thing because when that happens,
- 14:44people are like, oh, I get it, or
- 14:46I don't get it, right?
- 14:47That's what actually happens.
- 14:49And I think that's a really tough time
- 14:53for people to understand.
- 14:56And I will say to you that most
- 15:00people just don't understand this.
- 15:03They don't get why something's working or why
- 15:06something's not working.
- 15:07But they're the first to criticize, all right?
- 15:10They're the first to criticize.
- 15:12And I think that's an important thing to
- 15:16realize is that because you don't get the
- 15:18pat on the back, it doesn't mean you're
- 15:20not any good, all right?
- 15:22It doesn't mean you're not any good.
- 15:24Number 18, skill matters more than recognition.
- 15:29Competence builds long-term success.
- 15:32Number 19, isolation can strengthen focus and the
- 15:37output.
- 15:38Fewer distractions allow deeper development.
- 15:42But many people get stuck with the distractions,
- 15:44and they don't know what to do with
- 15:46them.
- 15:46So they're like, oh my gosh, what am
- 15:47I going to do?
- 15:49And then suddenly, they just bring themselves down
- 15:52all because of this challenge.
- 15:55And these are important things.
- 16:00I think the most important thing I want
- 16:03to say is that you have more skill
- 16:08and power than you think or that you
- 16:10give yourself credit for.
- 16:11The fact that you negate yourself and say
- 16:15you can't do something.
- 16:16Henry Ford said this a long time.
- 16:19If you think you can, you're right.
- 16:22And if you think you can't, you're also
- 16:24right.
- 16:26And a lot of people just don't understand
- 16:28that whole concept that our mind creates our
- 16:34reality.
- 16:36Our mind creates our reality.
- 16:41And that's a very important thing to understand,
- 16:47right?
- 16:48It's very important to understand.
- 16:50And I think some people just don't really
- 16:55get things, right?
- 16:57They don't get it because they're waiting for
- 17:00the cheerleader or cheerleaders to rah-rah cheer
- 17:03them on, right?
- 17:04But you don't need to have a cheerleader.
- 17:06Number 20, consistency in silence builds resilience.
- 17:11That means you keep doing what you need
- 17:13to do, even if you don't have cheerleaders,
- 17:15even if you don't have people applauding or
- 17:17raving wild, like you don't want to race
- 17:19or run.
- 17:20Yeah, yeah, go, go, go, go, go.
- 17:23It's nice to have it, right?
- 17:25But you have to still keep moving towards
- 17:27your goals, even if it doesn't exist.
- 17:29Repetition creates inner strength over time.
- 17:31And it's that momentum that causes us to
- 17:35build the mental, right?
- 17:37The physical and even the spiritual fortitude.
- 17:41Number 21, future success is built during unseen
- 17:45effort.
- 17:45The stuff that nobody sees, the challenges that
- 17:48only you see.
- 17:51That's really the truth, guys.
- 17:54What you do privately defines your public results.
- 17:58And you do not do things privately so
- 18:01that you can boast about them, okay?
- 18:03You do not.
- 18:04You do them so that you can become
- 18:06better with who you are, to become a
- 18:11better version of yourself.
- 18:12I think that's really the main thing.
- 18:15But a lot of people I talk to
- 18:17are like, I'm doing this because I want
- 18:20to show everybody.
- 18:23Well, what they really wind up doing is
- 18:25showing themselves how idiotic they are and how
- 18:28they have a big ego.
- 18:31And most people don't really care about that.
- 18:34I was talking to somebody today from a
- 18:35chamber and we're talking about things you don't
- 18:38do.
- 18:39One is you don't just throw cards at
- 18:41people.
- 18:41And the other thing you don't do is,
- 18:43well, we have 24 salespeople.
- 18:45We've been in business extras.
- 18:46Nobody really cares that you have 24 salespeople,
- 18:49that you've been in business 30.
- 18:50Nobody cares.
- 18:53They care about you.
- 18:56They really care about you taking the time
- 18:58to learn about them.
- 18:59And then they'll want to learn about you.
- 19:01Like Dale Carnegie said, strive to become genuinely
- 19:04interested in other people.
- 19:08Number 22, repetition creates strength before viability.
- 19:13We've learned before that repetition is the mother
- 19:15of skills.
- 19:16But we have to repeat things in a
- 19:18way that is going to be productive, that
- 19:22is going to be the right manner.
- 19:24See, you become, ladies and gentlemen, capable before
- 19:27you become recognized.
- 19:28When you're capable, nobody's around you.
- 19:33When you get proficient, people are like, oh,
- 19:35you know what?
- 19:35I need to hire him.
- 19:37I need to talk to him.
- 19:39You have skills.
- 19:41And I think those are very important things.
- 19:45Most people don't act in the right manner.
- 19:48You know why?
- 19:49Because they have a big flaming ego.
- 19:53And the ego's got to come out.
- 19:55I'm better than everybody.
- 19:58Nobody's better than anybody.
- 20:00We're all just learning day by day.
- 20:03But the people that think they're better than
- 20:04everybody are just going to be, well, taught
- 20:09a hard lesson.
- 20:10I know each day, I know a lot,
- 20:12but I don't know everything.
- 20:13And I'm always willing to learn more.
- 20:15I'm always happy to be humble because, look,
- 20:19I'm not perfect.
- 20:20And if I get somebody that says they're
- 20:22perfect, well, that's great.
- 20:24I don't challenge it.
- 20:25I said, that's good for you.
- 20:27Fantastic.
- 20:28But that's also somebody I don't want to
- 20:29hang around with.
- 20:31Number 23, guys.
- 20:34Number 23 is all about learning while unseen
- 20:37is a competitive advantage.
- 20:41A competitive advantage can make the difference to
- 20:45your success.
- 20:47Private growth removes external pressure.
- 20:50See, sometimes people do things.
- 20:52You know why?
- 20:53Because they're looking for the person to applaud
- 20:55them, right?
- 20:56They're looking for somebody to cheer them on.
- 21:01Number 24, long-term success depends on short
- 21:07-term consistency.
- 21:09Daily habits shape future outcomes.
- 21:11We've talked about this before.
- 21:12You have to have consistency and you have
- 21:14to have structure for things to happen.
- 21:16Number 25, most breakthroughs are invisible until they
- 21:20happen.
- 21:22Until they happen.
- 21:23And then everybody suddenly wants to be part
- 21:26of that success.
- 21:28They were nowhere near you when you were
- 21:30growing, when you were trying to get up,
- 21:34or when you were falling and nobody was
- 21:36there to help you.
- 21:38No.
- 21:39But now that you're a success, everybody wants
- 21:40to get a piece of your coattail.
- 21:43They want to hang on to any little
- 21:45bit they can, even if it's a tiny
- 21:47bit.
- 21:48Sudden success is usually after long preparation.
- 21:53When you prepare, you don't know when the
- 21:56success is going to hit.
- 21:57But you know that when you keep doing
- 21:59the same thing over and over again, and
- 22:01you start to see the needle moving in
- 22:04the right direction, you know that you got
- 22:07to keep doing that.
- 22:08Right?
- 22:09Whether it's losing weight, whether it's financial success,
- 22:13whether it's relationships, when you see something going
- 22:16in the right direction, you got to keep
- 22:18doing that.
- 22:20Number 26, many people quit right before the
- 22:24results ever appear.
- 22:25Just like seconds before it's going to appear.
- 22:28The gap between the effort and reward is
- 22:32where most people stop.
- 22:33Oh, I'm tired.
- 22:36It didn't work.
- 22:37I've been doing this for many months, for
- 22:40many years.
- 22:41I'm not getting anywhere.
- 22:43Are you making progress?
- 22:45Are you moving the needle?
- 22:46Yes.
- 22:48Keep doing it.
- 22:49Keep doing it.
- 22:50If you're working results, then you got to
- 22:53change.
- 22:54But if you're starting to see the needle
- 22:56move toward your direction, good.
- 22:59That's good.
- 23:00That's what we want.
- 23:01Number 27, small improvements compound before they are
- 23:05noticed.
- 23:06Right?
- 23:07Just like interest in a banking account, right?
- 23:09Or CD.
- 23:10Nobody notices that little tiny compound until it
- 23:13becomes a big amount of interest.
- 23:15Progress builds quietly over time.
- 23:18And most people don't recognize the progress because
- 23:21it's so tiny.
- 23:23It's so small, minuscule that it's hardly worth
- 23:26celebrating.
- 23:27But I want to tell you guys, it's
- 23:29every step.
- 23:30It's every inch, right?
- 23:34That you grow.
- 23:37Every nugget of knowledge that you absorb helps
- 23:44bring you to your success.
- 23:48Be humble, be open, and you'll learn.
- 23:56And you'll grow.
- 23:57And you know when you help others grow,
- 23:59you grow too.
- 24:01Number 28, private discipline creates public transformation.
- 24:06You don't want to shame somebody in public
- 24:08or yell at somebody.
- 24:09You want to politely get them off to
- 24:11the side and give them some consistent, constructive
- 24:16feedback.
- 24:17Not to embarrass them, not to belittle them,
- 24:20but to say, hey, you're doing this right,
- 24:21but we need to tweak this.
- 24:23I noticed all the shipments that you've been
- 24:25working on have been winding up in completely
- 24:29different states from where they're supposed to be.
- 24:33I was just curious to know how you
- 24:35do this, and maybe we could figure out
- 24:36a way.
- 24:38People are usually very open to do that.
- 24:42But when you come back, well, you know,
- 24:43you better get this straight.
- 24:45They want to quit.
- 24:47When they know that you're their alloy, they're
- 24:50willing to talk with you.
- 24:54What you do alone defines what others see.
- 24:58Now, they may not see it tomorrow.
- 24:59They may not see it the next day
- 25:01or even the next week or month or
- 25:03year, but they're going to see it.
- 25:04Number 29, perception of no progress is often
- 25:07incorrect.
- 25:08Growth is happening even when it feels so
- 25:11doggone slow.
- 25:15If we track a plant, for example, does
- 25:18anybody know how many days does, let's say,
- 25:22does a plant take to grow from a
- 25:26seed?
- 25:27Does anybody know?
- 25:28I mean, it's going to vary, right?
- 25:29The germination phase, three days to three weeks,
- 25:33okay?
- 25:33Depends on the herb, the plant, what have
- 25:35you.
- 25:36And the seed absorbs the water, and it
- 25:38pushes its first roots and shoots above the
- 25:41soil to form a seedling, seeding.
- 25:45And seeds sprout fastest in warm, moist, and
- 25:49stable environments, around 70 degrees to 80 degrees
- 25:52Fahrenheit.
- 25:53You can use a heating mat or grow
- 25:55lights.
- 25:56And then there's the maturation process, right?
- 25:58Microgreens, seven to 14 days.
- 26:00Fast-growing vegetables, radishes, lettuces, spinach.
- 26:03I'm talking about vegetables now.
- 26:04Three to six weeks.
- 26:06Fruiting vegetables, three to five months.
- 26:08Trees and woody shrubs, three to five years,
- 26:11right?
- 26:14So we don't say, hey, when's the tree
- 26:17going to grow?
- 26:17We know it's going to grow.
- 26:20Number 30, the hidden phase is where success
- 26:23is actually built.
- 26:26But it's not usually on stage.
- 26:28Everything visible later is constructed here first.
- 26:32So it's important that you get things built
- 26:36correctly.
- 26:38If you don't, you're going to just keep
- 26:41making things, well, wrong.
- 26:45I think that's an important point that most
- 26:47people, again, they miss.
- 26:51You know, in closing, guys, I want to
- 26:53say, so here is the truth, okay?
- 26:55If it feels like nothing is happening, and
- 26:58I know we've all been there, that is
- 27:00usually when everything is starting to happen underneath
- 27:03the scenes, the covers, right?
- 27:07This is the hidden growth phase, guys.
- 27:12And if you stay in it long enough,
- 27:15it always becomes visible.
- 27:19That's important, guys.
- 27:21I'm John C.
- 27:22Morley, and this has been Inspirations for Your
- 27:27Life.
- 27:28And this is where silent growth becomes real
- 27:32success.
- 27:33So the next time you're only hearing and
- 27:37seeing silence, don't be dismayed by it.
- 27:43Because anything can happen, such as a breakthrough,
- 27:49if you remain positive.
