- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it is Thursday.
- 0:16It is the 2nd of January, although this week I am betting
- 0:22for many of you it may as well be Shmee Day, the flunk of
- 0:27Lupiti, as days and calendars probably mean very little and
- 0:32the Oompa Loompas may as well have invented entirely new names
- 0:35for them. OK, that was a brief insight
- 0:39into the way my brain works, which is quite alarming and
- 0:42concerning for most of you. But hello friends, it is great
- 0:46that even in this strange time of year when days all bleed into
- 0:50the other, you have hit on play and this is what has come to
- 0:55you, this wonderful opportunity for you and to step back into
- 1:00time to this time, This this very brief window of history
- 1:05where the whole of Israel was unified under one king and
- 1:09things were going so well for them.
- 1:13They were living in God's favour, following God's laws and
- 1:16decrees and everything is just going swimmingly.
- 1:20These are the glory days, the golden years, and the author
- 1:24wants you to know that things were good in those years and so
- 1:28that is how they write. So let us go back and hear those
- 1:32good years as we read together. First Kings Chapter 5.
- 1:46King Haram of Tyre had always been a loyal friend of David.
- 1:50When Haram learned that David's son Solomon was the new king of
- 1:54Israel, he sent ambassadors to congratulate him.
- 1:58Then Solomon sent this message back to Haram.
- 2:02You know that my father David was not able to build a temple
- 2:06to honour the name of the Lord his God because of the many wars
- 2:10waged against him by surrounding nations.
- 2:14He could not build until the Lord gave him victory over all
- 2:17his enemies. But now the Lord my God has
- 2:21given me peace on every side. I have no enemies and all is
- 2:27well, so I am planning to build a temple to honour the name of
- 2:32the Lord my God, just as he had instructed my father David, For
- 2:37the Lord told him, your son, whom I will place on your
- 2:41throne, will build the temple to honour my name.
- 2:46Therefore please command that Cedars from Lebanon be cut for
- 2:50me. Let my men work alongside yours
- 2:53and I will pay your men whatever wages you ask.
- 2:57As you know, there is no one among us who can cut timber like
- 3:01you Sidonians. When Haram received Solomon's
- 3:05message, he was very pleased and said, Praise the Lord today for
- 3:10giving David a wise son to be king of the great nation of
- 3:15Israel. Then he sent this reply to
- 3:18Solomon. I have received your message and
- 3:21I will supply all the cedar and Cypress timber you need.
- 3:25My servants will bring the logs from the Lebanon Mountains to
- 3:29the Mediterranean Sea and make them into rafts and float them
- 3:33along the coast to whatever place you choose.
- 3:36Then we will break the rafts apart so you can carry the logs
- 3:40away. You can pay me by supplying me
- 3:42with food for my household. So Haram supplied as much cedar
- 3:48and Cypress timber as Solomon desired.
- 3:51In return, Solomon sent him an annual payment of 100,000
- 3:56bushels of wheat for his household and 110,000 gallons of
- 4:01pure olive oil. So the Lord gave wisdom to
- 4:05Solomon, just as he had promised, and Haram and Solomon
- 4:09made a formal alliance of peace. Then King Solomon conscripted a
- 4:15labour force of 30,000 men from all Israel.
- 4:19He sent them to Lebanon in shifts 10,000 every month so
- 4:23that each man would be one month in Lebanon and two months at
- 4:27home. Adeniram was in charge of this
- 4:30labour force. Solomon also had 70,000 common
- 4:34labourers, 80,000 quarry workers in the Hill Country and 3600
- 4:40foreman to supervise the work. At the King's command, they
- 4:44quarried large blocks of high quality stone and shaped them to
- 4:49make the foundation of the temple.
- 4:51Men of the city of Gabal helped Solomon's and her arms builders
- 4:56prepare the timber and stone for the temple.
- 5:09Our Lord, we come to you today as little people who live on
- 5:14this little planet at this particular time in history.
- 5:19And we see the way you have journeyed with your people here
- 5:25for so many generations. And we know that your plans
- 5:30stretch all the way back before us and all the way forward
- 5:34beyond us. And we see that your interest
- 5:37and attention is so broad it covers all the universe.
- 5:43And yet here you are right now, with us, hearing our prayer,
- 5:49resident in our hearts through Your Spirit, having sent us Your
- 5:54Son to save us. Ah, Your magnitude simply blows
- 6:00our minds, and Your kindness and Your presence with us simply
- 6:07humbles us beyond words. So, Father, we just stand before
- 6:14you in utter awe at Your enormity and Your majesty, and
- 6:20we throw up our arms and we praise you, and we worship you,
- 6:26our mighty King, our wonderful Saviour.
- 6:32And it's in the name of that Saviour, Jesus, that we pray.
- 6:36Amen.
