- 0:00Hello and welcome to the Christian Business Growth Podcast.
- 0:03I'm here with Lisa Costa from Shift 76.
- 0:06She's going be sharing her story.
- 0:08So Lisa, how did God get you started in business?
- 0:13That is a great question.
- 0:14Thank you so much for having me.
- 0:16I'm really excited to talk with you today.
- 0:19You know, I'm a serial entrepreneur.
- 0:20I'll say that my parents own their own business.
- 0:23I started several throughout my life.
- 0:27This one is one that when God called me in coaching was like, okay, like this is it.
- 0:32Like I need this to be successful.
- 0:34This is where I want to be.
- 0:36I don't want to sell, you know, plastic ware anymore, vacuums anymore.
- 0:40So it was really what
- 0:42really is it at the heart that I'm being called to do.
- 0:47So starting my business, I've been officially coaching, I will say official, for the last five years.
- 0:55Before that it was the, you know, someone, oh you need to call Lisa, oh you need to call Lisa, you know, and it's that now where am I at?
- 1:02Yes, I have some great things I've experienced in life that have helped me learn some lessons to help others kind of get where the next steps are, where it's not as painful
- 1:11anymore.
- 1:12I love that there's a quote someone had told me at one point, the best place to help others is a place you feel from.
- 1:20And so being able to step into that has been, has been great.
- 1:26So with my business coaching, I'm a Ziegler coach.
- 1:29So I'm a master Ziegler coach, great teachings, great community.
- 1:36And I use that training really to help.
- 1:40Center mindset so zig talked a lot about where you are in your mind is what helps you like when you're helping other people So what is your mindset?
- 1:49Do you believe that you're successful?
- 1:51Do you believe in yourself and from there everything else can happen?
- 1:55You can't be good at cells until your mindset is right You can't be good at loving your family until your mindset is right like there's things that we practice and we're we're
- 2:03working on But if we have that ought inside of our brain inside of our heart
- 2:08that keeps us from fully leaning into that.
- 2:12Those are the things that I really love to talk to people through.
- 2:16was a mindset shift that you had to go through to get you where you are today?
- 2:21Mm.
- 2:27There was several, I would say one was feeling like I was enough.
- 2:34There was a lot of times that I thought, what are you doing?
- 2:38Who do you think you are?
- 2:40And finding those people who needed someone else to tell them that you are enough, you can do this.
- 2:49I learned that so that I could help other people.
- 2:51Not so that, but I learned it.
- 2:53And then I was like, now I can help other people because I get it now.
- 2:56You know, we were all put on this world for a purpose.
- 3:00It's not by accident.
- 3:02It's not some great scientific experiment.
- 3:05I really believe that each person has a calling.
- 3:09And even if it's one person out there that we are put here to help, then that's the person.
- 3:15And being able to find who we are and who we are taking care of.
- 3:20Another great quote that I live by is,
- 3:25fighting for the highest possible good of the people we're responsible for.
- 3:29And that goes across so many levels.
- 3:32If you're in corporate, if you have children, if you are in a community base, there are people in your life that need you to fight for the highest possible good.
- 3:43That doesn't mean we give them everything when they want.
- 3:46It means that we are aware, we are looking, and we are noticing what we need and how we can help.
- 3:55Great, and what's God currently doing in your business right now?
- 4:00Currently, the foundation, I do a lot of construction projects and when you lay cement, there's some rhythms to it.
- 4:09So if you are building a big tall building, those layers of that foundation need to be deep.
- 4:16And then how do you put in the structures?
- 4:18You can't build on it until it's set, until it's the parameters are where they need to be, until it's shored up.
- 4:25And I'm in that foundation phase.
- 4:29I am one who just likes to get things done.
- 4:32Like I want to go.
- 4:34Here's the plan, let's do it.
- 4:36This business has been so beautiful to watch because God has slowed me down in some areas.
- 4:42I have some other things I'm working on.
- 4:44I'm working on my doctorate, so I can't put as much time into coaching clients right now.
- 4:49I only have very few, very select, but that slow down has really helped me realize the things I need to work on and make sure that are.
- 4:58tuned in really well so that when we're ready to go full steam, everything is in place and the growing pains will be less.
- 5:08Now you and I talked a little bit before this, you're talking about how serve is a very important part of you and you actually have developed a book for that.
- 5:14Tell us a little bit why serve is important to you.
- 5:19So I was working on a few books.
- 5:22Leadership is just something that has been part of my career.
- 5:28And I had the book called Lead and a book called Serve.
- 5:30And I was working on both of them simultaneously.
- 5:33And one had to be out within two months.
- 5:36And so I really prayed about it.
- 5:37And I was like, OK, we're going to go forward with Lead.
- 5:40And I just felt like this hesitation.
- 5:42Things were not falling into place.
- 5:45And I heard audibly, Serve.
- 5:48I was like,
- 5:49who's gonna buy a book on serving?
- 5:51Like that's just what you're supposed to do, right?
- 5:54uh That we're taught when we were little, that's the right thing to do, you just help other people.
- 5:59And as I started developing this book, I'm like, well, what I do know is if I do what I'm called to do, things are gonna line up and they're gonna fall into place.
- 6:07So I started working on this book and I started seeing so many great aha moments with the psychological piece, the physical benefits of helping other people, the why, the how.
- 6:20I think about, I started serving so long ago that I don't always remember what it feels like for someone who just kind of puts their toe in the water.
- 6:29And so then I had mentees that I was helping, which helped, you know, write the book and seeing the pains of trying to help and then feeling like, did I just get taken advantage
- 6:39of?
- 6:39Or maybe I don't want to help anymore.
- 6:41Maybe I gave too much.
- 6:42Maybe I didn't give enough.
- 6:44And being able to sort that in, I have that sorted out in the book.
- 6:49of how do we embrace that pain and keep doing what we're called to do?
- 6:53Because really serving is just yes.
- 6:56It's saying yes.
- 6:57And knowing the boundaries, we can't do everything and we can't go bankrupt helping people and we can't put ourselves in harm's way.
- 7:05But there is something that we're all called to do.
- 7:08It could be serving in the business that you've been given, but also just daily opening your eyes because we get so focused.
- 7:17We walked down the aisle at the grocery store and just got to get things done.
- 7:20We're connected to our phone.
- 7:21We're connected to whatever it needs to, you know, in front of us down the sidewalk.
- 7:26And we stop just for a second to look up and see someone and smile.
- 7:32Even that is being able to connect that serving purpose and letting someone know that they're valued.
- 7:39So the serve book is called serve the currency of significance in the currency is how we exchange.
- 7:47and this significance is value.
- 7:50How are we exchanging that value so other people know that they are enough for us to stop for five seconds and say good morning?
- 8:03Yeah, there's a powerful thing when a CEO steps out of his role and just talks to the person one-on-one.
- 8:10We've seen that.
- 8:10I saw a multimillionaire one time just stopped and he knew the name of the janitor at his building and had a conversation with them.
- 8:17I thought that was a powerful moment that somebody doesn't even realize how powerful something that simple is.
- 8:23And before this, you and I talked a little bit, talked a little bit about it.
- 8:26You said, sometimes just opening the door, you don't have to go out and
- 8:28do these big grandiose things.
- 8:30I mean, you do some amazing things, which hopefully you'll share about those in a little bit.
- 8:35But it's the little things.
- 8:37It's the smile.
- 8:38It's the nods.
- 8:39It's the acknowledgments.
- 8:40Sometimes just saying, how's your day going?
- 8:42And literally stopping and listening, not using that as a punctuation.
- 8:45How's your day going?
- 8:45See ya.
- 8:46You know, to stop, say, how's it really going?
- 8:49Digging in to say, I care enough to notice you.
- 8:51I love that you said
- 8:53Yeah.
- 8:54There's, you know, when we look at psychology, there's some things that stick out.
- 8:59And when we look at, did you know this?
- 9:02I saw the statistic yesterday when I was going through some research, 871,000 people die every year from loneliness.
- 9:13Of worldwide.
- 9:14807, that's 100 an hour.
- 9:18And where that loneliness comes from is think about it as being unseen.
- 9:23It's not that we overlook them or ignore them on purpose.
- 9:27It's just not seeing them.
- 9:30I have a neighbor and I noticed some things were off at one point.
- 9:34I was like, I wonder if she's okay.
- 9:37And so I tried to be out in the yard a little bit more because we have a chain link fences so I could see, you know, out back.
- 9:44We have some property here.
- 9:46And I saw her and I said, hi, how are you doing?
- 9:48And just that she's like, oh, I just, you know, she.
- 9:53was feeling lonely and there's not someone coming to check on her, not someone to see how she's doing.
- 9:59And that alone is so powerful.
- 10:01Thinking about some of our hard times and we don't always reach out.
- 10:05We don't want to be a bother, right?
- 10:07We don't text our friends or call and be like, hey, I'm having a bad day.
- 10:11We should.
- 10:12But when we stop for a moment and we, so I have a door framework.
- 10:16I'll tell you what it is.
- 10:17Cause holding the door, I told you is huge.
- 10:21is decide.
- 10:23We have to decide when we get up in the morning if we're going to be someone who holds the door.
- 10:28We have to decide.
- 10:30Always observe.
- 10:31We got to look.
- 10:32We have people all around us who are unseen.
- 10:35How do we see them?
- 10:36Is it the car behind you on your morning coffee run?
- 10:41Even if it doesn't look like they don't have money, just buy them a coffee.
- 10:44The simple nod saying, see you and I value you.
- 10:48They never know.
- 10:50They might never know who you are.
- 10:51That doesn't matter.
- 10:53but you planted a seed that they were valuable enough for someone else to notice.
- 10:58The third one, oh, open.
- 11:01You gotta open the door.
- 11:02You gotta say yes.
- 11:03So if we decide to do it and we see someone, then we have to have the courage to do it.
- 11:09And that's the hardest part, especially if it's a face-to-face.
- 11:13Like I see you and then I have to take up enough of courage to be like, good morning, how are you?
- 11:19You know, that could take a lot because we really don't.
- 11:21We just want to get things done in the day.
- 11:23We're really in a disconnected world.
- 11:25And then R, I've toyed back and forth with the R.
- 11:29I say repeat, do it again, do it again, do it again, and then it's a way of life.
- 11:35Or recruit and take people with you.
- 11:38It's way more fun to spread the joy and the kindness when you take someone with you.
- 11:43So that's how I try to structure things.
- 11:47It's easy.
- 11:48I do, there are some big things that I get the privilege of doing.
- 11:52And I love to take my, I have five children.
- 11:56I didn't tell you that.
- 11:57I have five children.
- 11:58uh All of them have been to Mexico with me.
- 12:01There's a village down on the Baja that I love to go work in.
- 12:08And we've had the opportunity to build homes for people who live in, we call them plastic houses.
- 12:13It's like four walls of tarp that they have found.
- 12:15you know, either in the trash or on the side of the road and piece together this house.
- 12:19And we've been able to leave them with a cement floor, four walls, windows, a door that locks a place where their children can be safe.
- 12:29That's pretty powerful when you hand over the keys there and not as a door that, man, that's a physical door that will ripple through their family.
- 12:37ah So taking my kids there, we've had opportunities here locally, just pick up trash, go out and leave notes on people's cars.
- 12:47you ever, I don't know if you have a Costco there, but finding a mint on your windshield that says, you know, some fun saying, have a great day or whatever.
- 12:57Those are just so fun.
- 12:59Just so fun.
- 13:00Hopefully someone smiles or someone isn't evidently bound to be upset that you littered.
- 13:05that's not, we can't please them all, but just try.
- 13:09What's one thing you can do today?
- 13:11Is it buying an extra box of crayons when you're at the grocery store and dropping them in the school supply bin?
- 13:18Is it paying attention to the neighbor?
- 13:21Extra weeds, maybe something's going on.
- 13:23Hey, I'm out pulling weeds, can I help do some for you?
- 13:28um Yeah, buy some extra hot dogs at the gas station and hand them out to people that, you know, there's always signs somewhere saying, you know, anything helps.
- 13:39Give them a hot dog or a bottle of water.
- 13:41Just seeing people, it actually has huge physiological benefits for ourselves as well.
- 13:47And that's not why we do it.
- 13:49But when we help people, it lowers depression, it lowers anxiety, it actually...
- 13:53turns off the pain receptors where we may have hidden pain in our body or something we're struggling from.
- 14:00Yeah, all around.
- 14:02Everyone should help, I think.
- 14:05Yeah.
- 14:05And like you said, it doesn't have to be a big thing.
- 14:07It'd be simple.
- 14:08You got a cell phone and you got a list of names.
- 14:11Who's somebody you haven't talked to in a month and something as simple as, just thinking about you.
- 14:15I hope your day's going well.
- 14:16It could be the simplest things, but, and you're a Ziegler person, as you probably know this that better than I do, but very few people hear positive things about themselves.
- 14:27And those things can carry people.
- 14:29I gave a note to a young man a long time ago and
- 14:33Three years later, I heard he still carried that little motor around.
- 14:35was like, really?
- 14:36That's silly.
- 14:37To me, it was silly, but to him, it was powerful because nobody had spoke positively into his life.
- 14:42I love that.
- 14:44Yeah, I like to challenge when I there there's different workshops that I get the privilege of helping lead.
- 14:49And one of the things I do is talk about better relationships.
- 14:53How do we have better relationships?
- 14:55And one, open up your phone.
- 14:58You pick five people.
- 14:59It can't be group text and you start texting.
- 15:02I appreciate you because and I learned this from Bob O'Dean.
- 15:04I'm not sure if you're familiar with him.
- 15:06Incredible.
- 15:08He has a book called Two Chairs.
- 15:09talks about how we set up our morning and have that conversation with God.
- 15:13I 100 % go get it.
- 15:15But he talks about the five people.
- 15:17And so when I challenge people to do that, and if it's students, I'm like, I'll have a prize for the first person who gets all five, you know, to encourage them.
- 15:26There's inevitably tears in the room because someone texts back how much that message impacted their day.
- 15:33So I took that forward for me that if a name pops into my head,
- 15:38Like, that's weird.
- 15:39I haven't talked to her in years.
- 15:40Send her a text.
- 15:42Like, I've tried to make it a rule.
- 15:43I don't always get it done, but I really try to because one thing I had to ask myself is how many people have I not seen and how many people have I walked by that really just
- 15:57needed that smile?
- 15:58And that alone is like, the text Lisa, just send it.
- 16:02So yeah, I like that you brought that up.
- 16:04Thank you.
- 16:05You're welcome.
- 16:05There's a man he passed away recently.
- 16:08His name was Basketball Bill.
- 16:10And he said, don't let a word of encouragement die on the tip of your tongue.
- 16:15that's a good one.
- 16:16would go and just pour out.
- 16:18I everywhere he went, he just oozed encouragement.
- 16:20In the back of my mind, I was like, man, I to be like that when I get older.
- 16:23And I thought, wait, I don't have to get older to be like that.
- 16:26I can be like that now.
- 16:30So we're going to shift real quickly.
- 16:31What are some tips you can give someone to help them grow their business?
- 16:34What are some things that you've done in your business that might help someone else in their business?
- 16:40Some things that will get you everywhere.
- 16:43And I teach this in leadership as well.
- 16:45I have my five, I call them my five power, like leading principles, empathy, communication, trust, courage, and vision.
- 16:57So when I lead teams, those are my five pillars, right?
- 17:02When we're working with other people, people know if you're genuine or not.
- 17:06They know if you really care.
- 17:09That's the empathy piece.
- 17:10Not too much empathy, not no empathy.
- 17:12There's that sweet spot in the middle of really genuinely caring about somebody.
- 17:17Are we communicating well?
- 17:19Have we dropped the ball?
- 17:20Have we followed up on emails?
- 17:21Have we communicated what we really want?
- 17:24What I love about, there's this thing called the Disney way.
- 17:28If you get to do the backside of Disney and tour, they'll talk to you about the little moments that they put into place that make their guests feel so honored and cared for.
- 17:38those little things go a long way, just letting people know that you care, that they are important to you.
- 17:44And it's not because you're important to me so I can have your money, it's you're important to me because I know I was put here on this earth to serve those who God brought
- 17:53to me.
- 17:54And that heart shift, that mindset shift is huge, because people know if you're just in it for the business.
- 18:01And some do because they value what you know, but you may lose some clients if they feel like
- 18:08You're just in it for the money and not really about them.
- 18:11Are you building that trust?
- 18:12The trust is that next piece, right?
- 18:14uh Building trust, knowing that they can rely on you, doing what you say you're going to do.
- 18:20That speaks volumes in a business.
- 18:23Are your policies clear?
- 18:25Do you even make concessions to help someone if it's like a cancellation?
- 18:33Sorry, I don't, know, 24 hour cancellation notice.
- 18:36You still have to pay.
- 18:38Or is it, I totally understand.
- 18:41I, this is my policy.
- 18:44You know what?
- 18:44Let's book again tomorrow.
- 18:46Let's talk.
- 18:47Let's keep this conversation going.
- 18:49Now if it's multiple times, obviously we need to set boundaries.
- 18:51There, there's a, there's that wisdom in there, right?
- 18:54But being mindful and letting them know that they are valuable.
- 18:58Um,
- 19:00Courage to do the hard things, courage to get up in the morning to hit record, courage to know that there's someone out there waiting for you to see them.
- 19:11And in our businesses, that's huge.
- 19:13You know, when I first, when I was younger and getting into business, it was like, okay, I'm gonna make this amazing and I'm gonna be this, the best ever at this and I'm gonna be,
- 19:23and there was always this feeling of like, okay, here's the mountaintop that I need to achieve.
- 19:28Here's where I need to go.
- 19:30And as I've aged, God's really spoken to me.
- 19:33Is it really about success and who's defining success?
- 19:39Are you defining success as the number of people sitting in front of you while you're on the stage?
- 19:46Or is success that one person that I called you to talk to?
- 19:53Is that the moment?
- 19:55And that will shift your business drastically.
- 19:58when you get up in the morning and you plan your day for your business and it's about that person that God's bringing in front of you versus what can I do to elevate my business?
- 20:08What can I do to make this happen?
- 20:10What can I do?
- 20:11Remember, I love this quote.
- 20:14I'll just say this.
- 20:15Ziegler said, you can have everything in life you want if you help enough other people get what they want.
- 20:23We can use that in a money scenario, but really if we use that at the heart of helping other people, we're gonna find so much health, so much success, so much peace where we can
- 20:34put our head down on the pillow at the end of the night and just know that we did exactly what we were meant to do is huge.
- 20:41So, and then the vision piece, all of that together, how do you, where are you going, what's the vision God has for you?
- 20:48Good deal, thank you.
- 20:49So tell us as we end up here, what's one little tidbit of wisdom you want to leave us with and tell us how we can get in touch with you.
- 20:58One of my mottos is, leave it better than you found it.
- 21:05I, before every coaching call, I pray I spend some time thinking about our last call or maybe it was a discovery call or I may not even know them and just spend some time writing
- 21:16some things down and make sure that I'm there because my goal is to not sell them another product, not whatever the next step may be, but that I'm there for them and leave them
- 21:30better than I found them.
- 21:32That's, that's my ultimate goal.
- 21:34And
- 21:35I say it worked really well for my heart and my peace of mind.
- 21:38And I've seen others who've put that at the forefront as well.
- 21:43I would ask yourself, what does success really look like for you?
- 21:46What is success?
- 21:47Because there's qualities of success.
- 21:49And when I ask people to lay out like right down 20 qualities of success, only one time in the hundreds of times I've taught the workshop, was it money?
- 22:00When we really think about what success looks like.
- 22:02and put those successes up so you can see them every day that you are a successful person and here are the qualities that you have so that you can see how amazing you are and what
- 22:11qualities you bring to the table.
- 22:15My website's down there, uh ship76.com.
- 22:19I am on Facebook and Instagram as well.
- 22:22uh
- 22:23And that shift with the number seven and the number six behind it.
- 22:26For those people who are listening.
- 22:29yes, thank you.
- 22:29Thank you.
- 22:30That's a great reminder.
- 22:31Yes.
- 22:32and thank you for sharing your story today.
- 22:35Yeah, thank you.
