Transcript
- 0:34Ryan : the first scene I remember is Jerry Dandridge crashing through the
- 0:37window, catching it on AMC Fright Fest in the afternoon it hooked me.
- 0:44seeing it later, in high school studying film, it's such a great vampire film.
- 0:50Kearns: Yeah, it's phenomenal.
- 0:52That scene, by the way, it reminds me of like jaws 3D.
- 0:56you see the scene of the shark just, just gravitating toward the camera a
- 1:02child, you didn't get how awful it was.
- 1:05that very dangerous one holds up way better.
- 1:07CGI.
- 1:08Jon: the documentary about it, and one of the things I was hoping to
- 1:11hear was that were elements like we're gonna make this 3D, and it's just not.
- 1:17It's just the way that scene was filmed.
- 1:19Kearns: Oh, really?
- 1:20Jon: Nothing about a 3D
- 1:22Kearns: makes sense because it does look like it could have been, it could
- 1:24have been framed to be a 3D thing.
- 1:26And 3D was a thing in 1987.
- 1:28Michael Jackson, Moonwalker was 3D.
- 1:31Ryan : feel like everything was 3D during that time, like Friday the
- 1:3413th even went 3D during the 80s.
- 1:37Jon: WPIX back in the day used to, do a whole week of horror, and at one point
- 1:42they were popping 3D movies on there, too.
- 1:453D was everywhere.
- 1:46Kearns: You just said the hallowed four letters WPIX eight to 10 o'clock movies.
- 1:51every week was themed and October was hallowed ground ninth
- 1:55gate would be on or something.
- 1:56And I'd be Begging the powers that be to keep my mom from walking
- 2:00in and seeing what I'm watching.
- 2:01Jon: I think that two hours exposed me to more horror than anything else.
- 2:06Kearns: Oh, easily.
- 2:06And then like Ryan said, AMC as I got older, AMC was what I gravitated toward
- 2:12more during Halloween time, because they would show, almost feel like you
- 2:15were on grandpa's knee or something.
- 2:17You would be seeing movies that you'd never knew existed that were 15 years
- 2:21old, you would never have been exposed to if they didn't get popped onto AMC.
- 2:24Ryan : I still remember the schedule especially during
- 2:27Halloween because of 31 days, right?
- 2:30Fest awesome wake up at 6 am and The bus had come at like eight o'clock.
- 2:35I'd watch puppet master, Halloween four, Halloween five.
- 2:38my mom's like, what are you watching?
- 2:40Nothing.
- 2:40Don't worry about it.
- 2:41And it's just good memories and Fright Night is one of those,
- 2:45They aired it because it was something that fans wanted to see.
- 2:48And that's when I'll be honest, AMC was great.
- 2:51Cause now it's like down to 15 days and it's just shitty movies.
- 2:54Kearns: Yeah.
- 2:55Ryan : not good.
- 2:55Kearns: they messed with it.
- 2:56Well they integrated back, there was no slasher stuff and things
- 2:59like that in there back then.
- 3:01It was all demons and they were the, it was the classic stuff.
- 3:04Then they integrated sort of modern movies, I guess,
- 3:07into it a little bit more.
- 3:08I think they should have just kept running the same loop.
- 3:10If they ran the same loop that we were watching in 94, 95, 96, I guarantee you,
- 3:15the viewership would go through the roof.
- 3:17Ryan : I would wake up at five in the morning if they
- 3:19showed the sequel to the omen.
- 3:21that's how I got introduced to that.
- 3:23right before going to the bus, the guy falls through the lake.
- 3:27Great.
- 3:27Kearns: solid.
- 3:28Jon: Fright Fest was doomed by the rise of streaming services, I imagine it
- 3:34also leads to something like Shudder, because Shudder is an AMC property,
- 3:39Kearns: I did not know that.
- 3:41Ryan : I didn't know that either.
- 3:43Kearns: Very cool.
- 3:44Very cool.
- 3:46when I was thinking about it, I flop around trying to find
- 3:48these movies to, watch, rewatch and prepare for the episodes.
- 3:52John's the only one out of the three of us with a Shudder subscription,
- 3:54Ryan : Yes, he is.
- 3:55Kearns: just like, come on, Amazon Prime.
- 3:57Nope.
- 3:58Come on, Netflix.
- 3:59Nope.
- 4:00Let's go Max.
- 4:01Nope.
- 4:01And I should really, cancel these.
- 4:03watch enough on them.
- 4:04Jon: want to give free plugs, but Shudder is the best bang for the
- 4:08buck too, because it's not expensive.
- 4:11Kearns: you can give a free plug to this guy.
- 4:12Ryan : Yeah.
- 4:13Kearns: Yeah, you can give a free plug to a golden thing.
- 4:15Ryan : what?
- 4:15Five 99 a month.
- 4:17Jon: it's nothing hey,
- 4:18Kearns: No
- 4:19Jon: there's the option to get the whole year at a discounted price.
- 4:22it's a legit service.
- 4:24Kearns: Do you have to watch commercials?
- 4:26Nah,
- 4:27Ryan : No.
- 4:27Kearns: give them my money just because they're not, grinding at the
- 4:30lint in my pockets like everybody else Oh, man, that's amazing.
- 4:34every other thing I have, it's like 11.
- 4:3799 but you have to watch 15 commercials one 20 minute episode, but anyway,
- 4:41enough complaining Fright Night 1987 versus Fright Night 2011.
- 4:47how do you compare anybody?
- 4:49To vampire Humperdinck for those who don't know it's Jerry
- 4:52Dandridge from the Princess Bride,
- 4:54Ryan : In my multi verse, Fright Night is a sequel to, The Princess Bride.
- 4:58Prince Humperdinck became Jerry Dandridge.
- 5:01Kearns: Nice.
- 5:03So how do we do it?
- 5:04follow up?
- 5:05He does such a good job in the original Fright Night.
- 5:07Jon: Silence.
- 5:11Kearns: range to go from Prince Humperdinck and his other stuff.
- 5:14he is in other horror movies.
- 5:15He's in the Corpse Bride, right?
- 5:17He voiced in the Corpse Bride.
- 5:18So horror is not a genre.
- 5:20He's, completely alienated from, aside from Fright Night.
- 5:23I thought he did a great job in the original.
- 5:25Jon: Chris Sarandon is the perfect Jerry.
- 5:28he's got enough slick, cool, sexiness to be believable without being over the top.
- 5:36he's the guy next door, not sexy Hollywood
- 5:40Door.
- 5:44A little digging.
- 5:45Kearns: yeah, he's a little night digger.
- 5:46He's putting in the nightshades.
- 5:48he's very believable and I think this is why he crushes that role.
- 5:51He's very believable as the dude whose dimples will distract your parents
- 5:56enough to believe him over you.
- 5:58Jon: Yes.
- 5:59Ryan : it's definitely shown in the scene when he's talking to
- 6:02Charlie's mom, you can see he's just cool calculating, He's sexy, man.
- 6:07He's got that romanticism he pulls it off so well.
- 6:10And then when he becomes that monster.
- 6:12Cause, I'm thinking of the scene when him and Charlie, had that little fight scene.
- 6:15He stabs him with the pencil.
- 6:17You see the evil come out, and Chris Sarandon does it so well.
- 6:21funny enough, he didn't even want to do it.
- 6:23he read the script, and he was like, Alright, let me meet the
- 6:25director, Tom Holland, this was his first film to direct, he
- 6:28actually wrote Psycho 2 beforehand,
- 6:30so he was like, let me meet him, and Tom Holland went shot by shot
- 6:33with him, in a LA cafe, and Chris Sarandon was like, I'm sold.
- 6:37then they worked together again, he was the detective in Child's Play, which
- 6:40Tom Holland wrote and direct also.
- 6:42Kearns: And that was my first experience seeing him, so he'll always be
- 6:45seared in my memory from that movie.
- 6:47That movie scarred me.
- 6:48We're not going to get into it this episode.
- 6:49We're going to wait until we roll around to that because I got stories that movie
- 6:53messed me up, that is how I remember him.
- 6:54And I was like, he's the good guy.
- 6:56then he's the bad guy for the rest of his career.
- 6:57Ryan : he was a good guy in Bordello of Blood.
- 7:00Jon: Oh, gosh.
- 7:01Kearns: Was anybody a good guy, in Bordello of Blood?
- 7:03honestly, though, that's a good reference, Bordello of Blood's been a minute.
- 7:06Jon: It's the, third best Tales from the Crypt movie.
- 7:08Kearns: What,
- 7:09Ryan : one star.
- 7:09Kearns: one?
- 7:10Ryan : Demon Knight,
- 7:11Jon: for
- 7:12Kearns: Demon Knight's good.
- 7:13Jon: Everything about Demon Knight.
- 7:15Soundtrack, atmosphere, that movie is solid.
- 7:18the original Tales from the Crypt movie, which I don't think is terribly
- 7:22related to the series, is better.
- 7:24Ryan : the 70s one?
- 7:25Jon: Yeah, that 70s one
- 7:27Ryan : That one was based on the EC comics.
- 7:29Which is cool, because it led to Stephen King and George A. Romero doing Creepshow.
- 7:34Kearns: we need more adaptations of graphic novels and things like that.
- 7:37I'm not talking about just gaming and Sandman and need to take more risks.
- 7:41Like those types of adaptations are gold.
- 7:44Ryan : Yeah, they are.
- 7:45I just read, Batman, Arkham Asylum, Sirius placed on a Sirius
- 7:49Earth, Not even the art, but how the story is written and stuff.
- 7:52It's got like that Sandman vibe, that gaming vibe.
- 7:54And it just, it's like, it's so deep there's more to it than meets the eye.
- 7:59Kearns: Nice more than meets the eye.
- 8:01Where have I heard that before?
- 8:02Ron so what are the, what are the redeeming qualities of the 2011 version
- 8:06of Fright Night that make it viable to put in the ring with the 1987 version?
- 8:10Jon: It's hard to compete I love Colin Farrell.
- 8:13Colin Farrell is too steamy to be Jerry.
- 8:16he's too sexy.
- 8:17Very much for having me.
- 8:21Bye
- 8:22Kearns: That's fair.
- 8:23They should have penguin him up a bit for the movie.
- 8:25thought ahead on that one.
- 8:26Jon: they went the opposite way.
- 8:28Sexied him up more, like his eyebrows are super thick and
- 8:32perfect and he's, well muscled and everything about him is just way
- 8:37Kearns: They're yelling at the assistants like somebody get
- 8:39more oil for Colin's eyebrows
- 8:41Ryan : I thought he was just vicious.
- 8:43through the characterization of them, I didn't like it.
- 8:45so opposite of what Chris Sarandon did because Chris Sarandon doing like the sexy
- 8:50part and the vicious part and blending it so well together, Colin Farrell,
- 8:53you can just see that viciousness.
- 8:55And there was like no difference.
- 8:56Kearns: Ryan that's where you believe he's a nice guy Or you buy into what everybody
- 9:02else is seeing and why He's able to hide in plain sight so well the Colin Farrell
- 9:06version doesn't pull that off remotely.
- 9:08Ryan : Even when he's gardening, I'm just like, Oh, this is cute.
- 9:11you want to tear their throats out.
- 9:13It's right in front of your face.
- 9:14even if you compare the scenes to evil Ed, when Chris Sarandon, Jerry
- 9:19Dandridge turns evil Ed into, the vampire, you see the connection,
- 9:23you feel the emotion in the scene.
- 9:26And then with Colin Farrell and, Christopher Mintz Blass.
- 9:29It's just, there's no emotion, no connection, it's just
- 9:31like, I'm just gonna turn you.
- 9:32And it's just like, ah,
- 9:34Jon: rushed it.
- 9:35In the original,
- 9:35Kearns: The Vimp?
- 9:36Jon: to Evil Ed before he gets turned, he's got the lines, you're
- 9:41so cool, Brewster, You have that.
- 9:43emotional connection to Evil Ed in the original.
- 9:47In the second one, he's, done.
- 9:49almost instantly.
- 9:51You don't connect to him ever.
- 9:53Kearns: So I'm hearing there's an art form to making your comic foil
- 9:57ghoul, your Redfield, your evil ed, whomever from Buffy played by a
- 10:04Ryan : that's a good one.
- 10:05Kearns: Yeah, he's like the number two guy.
- 10:07you have to do almost the same thing you have to do with the lead vampire.
- 10:10Ryan : very much.
- 10:17Kearns: I don't think a lot of people would talk about it like this, where
- 10:19you're talking about Jerry's character as something you need to flush out or
- 10:24evil ed, the way you described it, John, it's a little bit more art to it than
- 10:27just being able to smash it forward.
- 10:29And I think that's where these remakes fail they're losing the thread.
- 10:32Jon: And,
- 10:32maybe it's the age thing, maybe it's they have forgotten make
- 10:36this kind of movie right, but it's glossier, you lose the grit.
- 10:41if you read about the remake of Fright Night, it still has a comedy tag,
- 10:47but that's not really PredAtVersion.
- 10:49There's a couple of Peter Vincent scenes that are amusing, but most
- 10:53of the comedy element is wiped out
- 10:56Kearns: Right, and you need that as well, that's, I mean, anything in the 80s
- 10:59that hits like these genre horror movies need that comedy edge, in my opinion,
- 11:03They can't just be like cabin fever.
- 11:05Where it's a, it's a scary thing and there's lots of boobs everywhere.
- 11:08they're just, cherry picking two ingredients out of a
- 11:11whole recipe that they need.
- 11:13no, I'm definitely with you.
- 11:14And I guess that I'm just going to circle back a little bit with the idea that
- 11:17the vampire trope in general you have to humanize the monster in some way, or have
- 11:21an evil Ed, you can't just, Leave that
- 11:24Ryan : Okay.
- 11:28Kearns: the monster.
- 11:29with Jerry, you don't need that.
- 11:31the story is about the kid.
- 11:32Being in the face of evil and nobody believing him.
- 11:34That's where the real scare comes from the idea that you see the
- 11:37looming threat and everybody's just
- 11:39Ryan : Yes.
- 11:41Hmm.
- 11:42Hmm.
- 11:43Hmm.
- 11:44Hmm.
- 11:46Yes.
- 11:47Kearns: in interview with a vampire is a whole other aspect of it.
- 11:50but in let the right one in the, vampires.
- 11:53Like reluctant to kill in a way bit.
- 11:56And the kid wants to kill other people.
- 11:58That's an interesting one.
- 11:59Sorry, I'm going on a really weird tangent.
- 12:00Let's get back to Friday night.
- 12:02Jon: And you sort of,
- 12:04also miss with the remake how Chris Sarandon's Jerry Dandridge, the way
- 12:09he with Charlie the beginning, where with Colin Farrell's version, it's
- 12:15just more in your face, like, he's just openly taunting him, where, know,
- 12:20Sarandon's Jerry is subtle, almost, and he also has Billy Cole to do it.
- 12:26And one of the funny things that comes from the documentary is Jonathan
- 12:29Starks, who plays Billy Cole, says, Basically, every scene, I'm going out
- 12:34of my way Charlie as much as possible.
- 12:37And it
- 12:40Ryan : It shows well as the character progresses, because you
- 12:43see him as that assistant, and it's like, this kid's just crazy.
- 12:46He's like, he doesn't know what's going on they even get caught in the act.
- 12:50I'm shocked the mom doesn't see it, while they're by the car.
- 12:52he throws the body, the prostitute, in the trunk.
- 12:55And she's like, Charlie!
- 12:56Charlie!
- 12:56what are you guys doing over there?
- 12:58Charlie!
- 12:59Kearns: What's part of the oblivious aspect of it that they yuck up
- 13:01a lot with the parents like what the kid sees they're useless
- 13:05Jon: in the original, Mom is comedically oblivious in the
- 13:10remake, Toni Collette is fine.
- 13:12She's a great actress.
- 13:13She's pretty good in the role, too.
- 13:15it's a different spirit she starts as disbelieving, and never really
- 13:19figures out what's going on, they get in a car crash and knock her out.
- 13:23So she's written out that way.
- 13:25Ryan : she did kick ass in that movie.
- 13:26Like that van scene was a big highlight for me And then they
- 13:30ruined it by killing Chris Sarandon, even though he asked for it.
- 13:33It was just like, God damn it.
- 13:34Kearns: I got to ask the chicken and the egg for this one.
- 13:37What are the other movies that like we get the, I see this from my window I
- 13:42was thinking of a couple I was trying to think of what was the first movie
- 13:45that did the whole, my neighbor's dragging a body out the back door thing.
- 13:48guys, you think rear window Hitchcock
- 13:52Jon: comes up they say, before Rear Window there was a movie called The Window,
- 13:56Kearns: Yeah.
- 13:57Jon: So I think that's really where that comes from.
- 14:00before movies, spying on your neighbor is useful
- 14:05Kearns: I think it kind of pulls from the tenement housing days when you're
- 14:08jammed against each other, pouring your poop outside in a pot that kind of thing.
- 14:12And you're forced to look outside at the weird and horrific things that your
- 14:16Cause it's more city like, right?
- 14:17And then with this, you plop that
- 14:22Ryan : Damn Jerry Dandridge.
- 14:23Kearns: And your damn handsome face.
- 14:24You son of a bitch.
- 14:26Ryan : Prince Humperdink.
- 14:27Kearns: Humper dunk.
- 14:28Humper hunk.
- 14:29Jon: Super hug.
- 14:30Ryan : Hey, I mean that nightclub scene.
- 14:32That dance scene.
- 14:33was cool cause like you see that transformation of Amanda Burse's
- 14:37character Amy goes through from teenager to adult to lost love.
- 14:41That was pretty cool, but the dance scene and music.
- 14:44it's so 80s, but it works.
- 14:45Kearns: that's the best part though.
- 14:47almost like you have to suspend your disbelief because it's so 80s.
- 14:50The 80s seems fake.
- 14:51I don't think the kids today can understand the level
- 14:53of cartoonish the 80s were.
- 14:55Ryan : Scarface is a serious movie, but there's cartoon elements in it.
- 14:59Kearns: It feels like a comic book when you're reading it that just
- 15:02the lapels alone in that movie.
- 15:04It's 90 percent lapel
- 15:06Jon: the neons and all the colors, yeah, the 80s are a cartoon.
- 15:10Kearns: Yeah, it feels that way you get movies you go back to fright night, a
- 15:13great movie you're watching it and then they pull in this 80s thing and it pulls
- 15:17you out of it for a second You're just like oh my god, the 80s were crazy.
- 15:21Is that crisscross in the background?
- 15:22What is happening?
- 15:23Ryan : that's what makes the 80s movies and even the early 90s horror
- 15:26and films great is that they put a little light heartedness in it.
- 15:29So it's like, it gives off the edge, you feel all right, this is cool I feel good.
- 15:33And then.
- 15:34Bam, everyone's dead.
- 15:35And you're like, no, this is horrible.
- 15:36then it's more lightheartedness.
- 15:38it's a good pattern.
- 15:39like a movie where it's like, oh shit, the entire time is good, but too much of it.
- 15:45like perfect for Fright Night, like 1980, one.
- 15:47The 2011 one, I love David Tennant.
- 15:50That was perfect for him.
- 15:52Those are the lighthearted moments
- 15:54Jon: the
- 15:54Ryan : you know,
- 15:55Jon: one,
- 15:55Ryan : and then
- 15:56Jon: in the 85 one, the Peter Vincent character is funny in other ways.
- 16:01Number one, he's a hammer horror film character.
- 16:04that sort of British vampire killer.
- 16:07Tom Holland says he based that character on Peter Cushing and Vincent Price.
- 16:11And he wanted Vincent Price to play the character, but already
- 16:16in failing health by that point.
- 16:18But you get Roddy McDowell,
- 16:19as much as I love Vincent Price, Roddy McDowell is perfect for that role.
- 16:23Ryan : It's how he acts and reacts.
- 16:25he was doing a good Peter Cushion impression.
- 16:28I love Peter Cushion, especially from the Hammer films.
- 16:30he gave me that vibe from horror of Dracula.
- 16:33the pocket mirror and his reactions, and it flows nicely, especially when
- 16:38he's like, Fighting evil ed and stuff.
- 16:40The brandishing of the cross on the forehead.
- 16:42It's just iconic
- 16:44Jon: And plays bumbling vampire killers so well.
- 16:48I'll tell you how many times I've seen the original Fright Night.
- 16:51dozens.
- 16:52they talked about this in the documentary, and I never noticed in
- 16:56the beginning, they have the movie within the movie with Peter Vincent.
- 16:59he's going to stake the vampire.
- 17:01The stake is backwards.
- 17:03The dull end is the end he's going to hammer in.
- 17:06they did that on purpose to add that cheese element to a movie within a movie.
- 17:12Like, that attention to that kind
- 17:14Ryan : That's awesome.
- 17:15Kearns: that's kind of cool.
- 17:16Jon: Yeah,
- 17:18Ryan : That would happen in a Hammer film,
- 17:21Kearns: to think of, major differences in the original and the new one, the remake
- 17:25besides, the hunkierness of the vampire.
- 17:28What else is starkly different?
- 17:30you mentioned the character is more evil, but I'm trying to think of
- 17:32actual plot points they changed.
- 17:35Ryan : going back to Peter Vincent, he's a TV show host in the original,
- 17:39and a magician in the remake.
- 17:41two different elements
- 17:42Kearns: one.
- 17:43Ryan : it's easier to get access to them.
- 17:45In the original, he just meets him out the studio.
- 17:47Hey, oh, you're a fan.
- 17:48And this one Charlie has to be a reporter.
- 17:51He's got the fake newspaper thing and stuff, and he starts investigating it,
- 17:55which it's a nice little plot point too, and it, because it leads to, in the
- 17:59remake, Peter Vincent, you learned his parents were killed by Jerry Dandridge.
- 18:03it's a nice circle
- 18:04Jon: but Peter Vincent from Peter Cushing to Criss Angel.
- 18:09Kearns: I just want to see Criss Angel get killed by a
- 18:10vampire Why'd you do this to me?
- 18:13Jon: In the original, you know Peter Vincent is a fake.
- 18:16Kearns: Yeah.
- 18:17Jon: it's revealed that he's a fake.
- 18:19an actor playing a role.
- 18:20With the remake Peter Vincent.
- 18:23The first time you see him, he's got long hair piercings tattoos And
- 18:27you're like, oh, that's a cool dude.
- 18:29And then, you know, he gets in the room alone with Charlie the hair comes off
- 18:34piercings come out completely fake.
- 18:37Kearns: I do love the idea of Charlie showing up and this is
- 18:40like an eighties thing to show up at the back door of the studio.
- 18:42And he's like emptying out his ashtray filled with cigarettes.
- 18:45He's like, Oh, you're a fan.
- 18:46Ryan : Yeah.
- 18:48Kearns: security for being near a celebrity.
- 18:50they take the glamour away from the low level celebrity back then the Magician
- 18:54versus Joe Bob Briggs, if you don't know what that is, I'm better than you.
- 18:58not you two, I'm talking about the listeners.
- 19:01I already know you
- 19:01Ryan : Yeah.
- 19:02Kearns: know Joe Bob
- 19:02Jon: I'll tell Shudder more.
- 19:03another reason is you get Joe Bob Briggs.
- 19:06Kearns: You mentioned that once, and I should have just bit the bullet back
- 19:09then, but I think it'd be cool to ask Joe Bob Briggs for help with anything too.
- 19:13Like a bully or a werewolf and see what he does.
- 19:16He'd tell you to go fuck yourself.
- 19:17Magician versus television host and there was another juicy tidbit, but one of you
- 19:21is probably going to reveal it later.
- 19:22So I'll leave that alone about that character.
- 19:25And the fright night show I'm looking for a glimmer in your eyes.
- 19:28Ryan knows what I'm talking about.
- 19:29So I'll leave that alone.
- 19:30other notable changes.
- 19:32Ryan : The setting.
- 19:33You go from Corvallis Iowa to Las Vegas suburbs.
- 19:37It kind of like dampers it in its own way, because like, at least Iowa, it's
- 19:42quiet, nothing really going on, it's not expected, then you go to Las Vegas,
- 19:46middle of a desert, but you hear Las Vegas, you think lights, you think of
- 19:50glamour and stuff, and they do flip it, because they make it darker against
- 19:54that glamour, quote unquote, but the quiet suburb is more fitting for a
- 19:58vampire film, because you don't know what the hell's going to happen, while
- 20:01Las Vegas is like, anything can happen.
- 20:03Kearns: Yeah, least believable thing in the whole remake is an
- 20:06Irish guy gardening in Vegas.
- 20:08Not a chance he's alive.
- 20:10You know he's a vampire right away.
- 20:11Jon: There is an element of that setting in the new one that is effective for
- 20:16me when they show long shots of the community surrounded by nothingness.
- 20:22it does give a little bit more of an ided feel than the straight
- 20:26suburban of the original.
- 20:28Kearns: That's true.
- 20:29you have to make that leap for the suburban feel to feel
- 20:32isolated because he's isolated, even though surrounded by people.
- 20:35And that's what makes it scary.
- 20:37I'm a huge psychological horror guy.
- 20:39that stuff messes me up when you're like you're drowning, but surrounded
- 20:43by people it's another example of the new movie, putting it in your face.
- 20:47Whereas the original made you make that connection yourself.
- 20:50Ryan : Yeah, that was also another change in the remake, he's trying
- 20:53to create an army of vampires.
- 20:54But in the original, he's just killing anyone who he wants to kill.
- 20:58And, he turns Ed, he turns Amy, but he's not trying to build an army.
- 21:01He's just, I lonely,
- 21:03The other one wants a cannibalistic army, because they'll eat one another,
- 21:06according to the lore, in the movie.
- 21:07Kearns: Which is interesting.
- 21:08gives you an idea, like the narcissism behind being a vampire.
- 21:11you create friends, underlings, but they're disposable you move on to
- 21:15your next adventure they're solo.
- 21:17isolated.
- 21:18There's no really digging out of that.
- 21:19That's why they play with their food.
- 21:21You get bored.
- 21:21Ryan : It's true.
- 21:22they were coming out the walls, the ground dirt flying off.
- 21:25It's like he's controlling them.
- 21:27That scene was in bad.
- 21:28That was a pretty cool scene thinking about it as the sunlight's pouring in
- 21:31the original ending where the sunlight's coming in as they're breaking the glass.
- 21:35It's still iconic.
- 21:38Kearns: one of the things where the weakness is so glaring.
- 21:41get him out into the light, and he'll die.
- 21:43But he's also superhuman, multi century old way smarter than you.
- 21:49and you're also a kid.
- 21:50the best part, is that you're just a stupid kid.
- 21:53Ryan : Okay.
- 21:59Kearns: of reasons the movie works, but you know Like, how
- 22:01do you make it so the kid wins?
- 22:03And that's how they did it.
- 22:04Ryan : they just make it easy for the kid to win because they
- 22:07make a simple escape route.
- 22:08That's what Tom Holland does.
- 22:09He makes it very simple if you were in that situation and you're a kid,
- 22:13you can do that plus Charlie, watches Fright Night the show Peter Vincent
- 22:17hosts in the original and the remake.
- 22:20He's watched all those horror movies.
- 22:21So he has that knowledge prior.
- 22:23That's why it works, even when I first saw it when I was young.
- 22:26It works.
- 22:28Jon: that's a big difference in the two also original Italy and his
- 22:33love of horror and that Fright Night franchise in particular discovers
- 22:39the vampire first in the remake.
- 22:41It's Ed.
- 22:42Ed is all over Jerry being a vampire way before he drags Charlie in
- 22:49Ryan : I prefer Charlie dragging Ed into it.
- 22:51it's more clear because Charlie lives next door He should see Jerry being
- 22:55a vampire instead of Ed stalking him.
- 22:58it's creepy.
- 22:59what are you doing?
- 23:00Oh, he's a vampire.
- 23:01What if he wasn't a vampire, Ed?
- 23:02Alright, he's just a gardener, planting potatoes.
- 23:05Kearns: everyone.
- 23:06Gardener.
- 23:07Nothing to see here, folks.
- 23:09Jon: on the outskirts of Las Vegas.
- 23:11Kearns: Right where potatoes thrive.
- 23:13Jon: Yeah.
- 23:14Kearns: What else was revealed in the documentary that blew you away?
- 23:17Jon: two of the coolest things I got out of that documentary, one of the big
- 23:21questions I had watching the original is, do vampires really like apples that much?
- 23:27ate that apple through the movie.
- 23:29Kearns: you think he did that?
- 23:29Why do you think they went with the apple?
- 23:31Jon: learned about that.
- 23:32So Tom Holland had each actor write a biography for the character
- 23:37before they started filming.
- 23:39Sarandon wrote that in because he discovered that the majority
- 23:43of bats weren't vampiric, but they were fruit eating.
- 23:47So he thought it would be a nice twist give his vampire based on bats.
- 23:53fruit as sort of like a crutch.
- 23:56the apple comes from Chris Sarandon.
- 23:59Kearns: Chris Sarandon nailed it.
- 24:00He's a little too hip for the room because the majority of people are not going to
- 24:04know unless you watch crocodile Dundee.
- 24:06Anybody remember the iconic scene crocodile Dundee 2 or 1?
- 24:10I think it's 2 where they're in the outback and they crush up the fruit.
- 24:14and they throw, it on the guys.
- 24:15So the bats go after them.
- 24:17they're called flying foxes in Australia.
- 24:18They're huge.
- 24:19that's how I know that's true.
- 24:21Jon: The other sort of cool revelation I got from the documentary is
- 24:25William Ragsdale cost the production company a hundred thousand dollars.
- 24:29Kearns: Oh, shoot.
- 24:30Jon: he's running down the stairs, not being chased, just
- 24:33Kearns: Oh,
- 24:35Jon: they did a bunch of takes and on the last take he tripped and broke his foot.
- 24:40it leads to delays because he can't do all the other sets and like stuff
- 24:44like that And you could apparently when they went and re watched the
- 24:48tape You could hear his foot break.
- 24:50he gets sent to a doctor by, the insurance company, he's honest with the doctor.
- 24:57they're like, so does this really cost filming time?
- 25:00And like, Nah, I mean mostly I just sit around and wait
- 25:04for them to be ready for me.
- 25:06When the opposite answer is what they really needed him to give.
- 25:10Kearns: That's funny.
- 25:10Jon: But, they had to change some stuff and go over time
- 25:29Kearns: fought two days later cuz he was terrified his career was over.
- 25:32Ryan : You know what's crazy is he breaks his foot running down normal
- 25:36steps, but you watch Nightmare on Elm Street when Nancy's climbing
- 25:39up the steps and sinking in.
- 25:40No one broke their foot or ankle on that.
- 25:42that was more dangerous, than walking down regular steps.
- 25:45The simplicity can kill you when you don't think about it.
- 25:49Kearns: I've gone down on ass over tea kettle on my steps just
- 25:52because I was wearing socks.
- 25:53Jon: yep.
- 25:56Kearns: for those kids listening, landing on your ass above a certain age.
- 26:00It's just a different experience, guys.
- 26:02Jon: Landing on anything after a certain age is a different experience.
- 26:07Kearns: Fair point.
- 26:08Ryan : It's like home alone, but not funny.
- 26:11Kearns: Yeah, not funny Marv!
- 26:12I think he's dead.
- 26:14Harry, I can't feel my legs, Harry!
- 26:15Oh, man.
- 26:17Aw, Fright Night, Fright Night.
- 26:18So, alright guys.
- 26:20else do we want to segue into besides what I know Ryan's sitting on?
- 26:24Ryan : I got that ending in my head.
- 26:26If you want to cover the original endings of fright night.
- 26:29Kearns: I was fishing for it.
- 26:30Let's do it.
- 26:30Jon: Silence.
- 26:32Ryan : the original ending before there was like a whole bunch of
- 26:35revisions and everything, the original ending was going to have
- 26:38Peter Vincent hosting fright night.
- 26:39And as he's hosting Fright Night on live TV, he's transforming into a vampire bat
- 26:45because he got turned into a vampire.
- 26:47I think that would have been so different because it would have been more of a
- 26:51shocker and it would have been awesome because like Charlie would have been
- 26:53watching it and it would have been like oh shit Peter Vincent turning into
- 26:57a vampire is it's unique, especially for that time for a shock ending where
- 27:01there was few in between, because I feel like at that time, sleep away camp
- 27:04really comes to mind, or, Friday the 13th, when Jason comes out of the water.
- 27:08Kearns: jump scare one.
- 27:10No, I think that ending slaps.
- 27:13I can't say it would be better, but I love that idea.
- 27:16you feel safe.
- 27:17Everything's good.
- 27:18You have that good feeling, the good side one, and then whatever
- 27:22he's doing and the transformation.
- 27:23then you cut to credits, you win, and then you roll into Van Halen or something
- 27:28Ryan : Runnin with
- 27:29Kearns: Yeah.
- 27:30bam.
- 27:30You got it I think I would elevate it a bit.
- 27:32Ryan : I love the Evil Ed ending.
- 27:34Jon: I like that is it still there?
- 27:36Did you see eyes and hear the laugh and stuff?
- 27:40is it imagination?
- 27:41I like the way that sort of left.
- 27:43Ryan : It screws with you.
- 27:45It's like the end of Hellraiser, where it's like, What's your pleasure?
- 27:48And it's like, Oh no, we're going through this all over again.
- 27:51I'm stoked.
- 27:52Jon: And I think if you're gonna shoot for twist ending, you're not gonna outdo Camp.
- 27:58Ryan : Oh god, no.
- 27:59Jon: nothing about that is, you can replicate.
- 28:02I just learned today, Felisa Rose, who was the girl in Sleepaway Camp, is gonna
- 28:08be at Connecticut Horror Fest in May.
- 28:10Kearns: Oh,
- 28:11Ryan : I need her to make the face.
- 28:12If we take a picture, if I go, it's just like, why would you want her to smile?
- 28:16You want her to do the face,
- 28:18Jon: absolutely.
- 28:19Kearns: Yeah.
- 28:19Jon: Do you know how many times she poses that way?
- 28:22Kearns: lot.
- 28:22having done a few of the cons now and getting to watch the people
- 28:25up there for two days in a row.
- 28:27she's probably done a 10, 000 times at this point.
- 28:30Jon: for sure.
- 28:31Ryan : that's the great thing.
- 28:32They love it because they love the fans.
- 28:34Kearns: that too.
- 28:35Ryan : It probably gets sickening after a while, but
- 28:37then they revamp and do it again.
- 28:38Kearns: Yeah.
- 28:39so that's the original ending to fright night, which John
- 28:42prefers the one they went with.
- 28:44Which is good too, the way, I'm not saying anything otherwise.
- 28:48It is good.
- 28:48But any other juicy little morsels or tidbits you guys want to go over
- 28:52before we roll into your fives?
- 28:53Jon: like there's a couple of things that struck me like in the original gets
- 28:58Peter Vincent to finally come around to the fact that is the vampire just his own
- 29:04self importance and vanity that he's like got his little pocket mirror out checking
- 29:09himself and he's like, Oh, wait a minute.
- 29:11Jerry's not in the reflection.
- 29:14I thought that was a cool touch.
- 29:15Also, one of the things I thought the 2011 one did really well was
- 29:20sort of reinvent the vampire rules.
- 29:23That, or at, modernize them, not reinvent, where now you can't
- 29:28see a vampire on a video camera.
- 29:30thought that was a really good touch, that it, to take it into a more modern setting.
- 29:36Kearns: One of the things that would have ruined the original ending because
- 29:38they would have been recording on TV Right, that would have ruined it.
- 29:41But now you're right.
- 29:42That's that's a huge one If you're not gonna show reflection, you
- 29:45wouldn't capture their image.
- 29:46cool idea
- 29:47Jon: the other thing that struck me towards the end of the original
- 29:50apparently, and they acknowledge this in the documentary, a woman gets turned
- 29:55into a vampire, she becomes sexier, her hair grows, and her boobs grow.
- 29:59Kearns: That's scientifically proven.
- 30:01It happens in LA all the time.
- 30:02Ryan : That wasn't happening to Marcy Darcy.
- 30:04Kearns: That wasn't happening to Marcy Darcy.
- 30:07She didn't get the Botox breast implant, vampire treatment,
- 30:10Ryan : just needed Bundy to walk in at that point.
- 30:12Kearns: Marcy Darcy.
- 30:13That was another fun spotting.
- 30:16Her again was awesome.
- 30:17Can't remember his name.
- 30:18her husband from the later seasons is in the show shrinking, that
- 30:22my wife and I watch, and it's hilarious to see him acting again.
- 30:26He's amazing too.
- 30:27In the show.
- 30:28He's just It plays a guy named Derek.
- 30:32But, anyway.
- 30:32You remember the first husband was Steve.
- 30:34second husband's name, I can't remember now.
- 30:36But that's who he is.
- 30:38Jon: the series of TV shows that failed.
- 30:41I always confuse him with the guy from
- 30:43He's not the guy from Scrubs, but their names are similar.
- 30:47Kearns: Cox?
- 30:47Jon: janitor.
- 30:48Kearns: Jefferson Milhouse Darcy.
- 30:51The guy's name is Ted McGinley.
- 30:52Jon: Gimli.
- 30:54Kearns: It's funny.
- 30:55It's such a man's world, we're literally talking about the female character from
- 30:59the show, and we're like, screw her, we're gonna talk about her counterpart.
- 31:06Ted McGinley,
- 31:07We remember.
- 31:08Marcy Darcy.
- 31:09she made that show
- 31:10Ryan : yeah, the banter
- 31:11Jon: what if Marcy Darcy is really Amy and still a vampire?
- 31:16Kearns: I'm looking at her headshot Marcy Darcy would have made a killer
- 31:18vampire with her Karen haircut.
- 31:20Jon: She was Karen before
- 31:22Kearns: for real.
- 31:22100%. We've got to rebrand them as Marcy's because she looks like
- 31:26some kind of Australian waterfowl.
- 31:28Ryan : that's why she was called the chicken head.
- 31:30Kearns: That's why Al went back and forth That's right.
- 31:32But yeah, that's just, I don't know what this movies from that era, when
- 31:36you see the actors and they have tendrils out to different shows that
- 31:39were part of your formative years, like married with children it's a nice
- 31:43little shot into the memory bank of like, ah, that was such a better time.
- 31:46Look at her
- 31:47Ryan : It
- 31:49Kearns: Let him go to the strip club.
- 31:50He's a shoe salesman for Christ's sake, Marcy.
- 31:52Who plays her character in the remake?
- 31:55Jon: Imogen
- 31:56Kearns: Oh god, you know, she's okay and out of range.
- 31:59That's Imogen Poot?
- 32:00Ryan : she was in greed room too.
- 32:01Jon: With,
- 32:02Yeltsin.
- 32:02Kearns: That's why I don't recognize her.
- 32:04She looks about five years old in that movie.
- 32:06Poot Gets it done as far as acting goes.
- 32:09she can stand on the same stage as Thanos and get the job done,
- 32:13Josh Brolin, for those who don't know my weird way of talking.
- 32:16That's an interesting swap out, though.
- 32:19Another one, like Colin Farrell, Imogen Poot.
- 32:21And that's what I will say her name like that forever.
- 32:24your last name is the same as a soft part.
- 32:26Jon: I had
- 32:26googled his name just because I was afraid I would think
- 32:29Putin, like pot or something.
- 32:31Ryan : Transcripts
- 32:34Jon: that's the pronunciations.
- 32:36Kearns: Poot.
- 32:36God.
- 32:38Ryan : To continue on Billy Cole, I do feel he added more, and it goes
- 32:42back to our first episode where there needs to be a Renfield character.
- 32:45Colin Farrell's Jerry Dandridge, he's a powerful vampire.
- 32:49But if they included that Renfield style character, Billy Cole it could
- 32:52have made it a little more lighthearted on the viciousness of Jerry Dandridge.
- 32:56Evil Ed doesn't even,
- 32:58Christopher Mintz Ploss, he doesn't even do it justice to make it comedy.
- 33:01It's just like, oh, it's just McLovin.
- 33:04Where's your ID?
- 33:04Kearns: And that's another cancer of these times the way they cast
- 33:08things is who's hot right now.
- 33:09Let's get the kid from super bad.
- 33:11the fat one, no, the one who, shits his pants when girls talk to him.
- 33:14Ryan : Should've, gotten Michael Cera.
- 33:16That would've been a little bit better.
- 33:17Kearns: he would have been better in that role.
- 33:18He's well hated, though.
- 33:20Lots of people just love to shit on Michael Cera for some re
- 33:23Well, actually, I can imagine.
- 33:24There's plenty of reasons.
- 33:25I liked him in Juno.
- 33:26Ryan : Yes.
- 33:27Kearns: he's crushed that role he plays himself, but still.
- 33:30I don't get the Michael Cera hate.
- 33:32Jon: that's part of the hate for him
- 33:33Kearns: Yeah,
- 33:34Jon: playing himself
- 33:35Kearns: such a kooky character, Michael Cera, it works.
- 33:38Jonah Hill branched out.
- 33:39He's definitely been in some character roles.
- 33:42Ryan : Wolf of Wall Street.
- 33:43Kearns: Thinking of the teeth, people forget like.
- 33:45The character was smoking crack the beginning of the movie and like trying to
- 33:48get Leo's character to smoke crack too.
- 33:51And then he got made into a multimillionaire by the end of the film.
- 33:55Life's not fair.
- 33:56Ryan : He eats a live fish.
- 33:57Kearns: Yeah.
- 33:58Ryan : the actual person did hopefully Jonah Hill did it.
- 34:00I knew a guy who worked in stocks and all that during that time.
- 34:05And I asked him one day, Was this going on?
- 34:07Wolf of Wall Street?
- 34:08And he was like, Oh yeah, 100%.
- 34:09Everything in that movie went down.
- 34:12if you've seen The Wolf of Wall Street, A lot of that stuff did happen.
- 34:15Kearns: there's a megalomania to that time period in the stock
- 34:18market, I should say, not like in the exchange, but being in those office
- 34:21buildings, that was a wonderful time to be a debaucherous asshole.
- 34:25Jon: Agreed.
- 34:26Ryan : true.
- 34:26Or you become Patrick Bateman,
- 34:28Kearns: he was ranked one of the least believable psychopaths around
- 34:31the same level as Hannibal Lecter.
- 34:33What's his name?
- 34:34Sugar cigar from no country for old men was the number that's
- 34:38one where you're like, yup.
- 34:39I get it.
- 34:39we should do an episode on that list.
- 34:41That would be fun.
- 34:42these guys are gonna roll into their top fives.
- 34:43I don't know their top five lists this week.
- 34:45Jon: they're different again.
- 34:48Kearns: Are they
- 34:48Ryan : Yeah,
- 34:49Jon: what did you go with?
- 34:51Ryan : I went with movies in the same realm of Fright Night 1985.
- 34:55So, if you love Fright Night, the original one, these are, and the
- 34:592011 one, if you like the 2011 one.
- 35:02I have, two movie recommendations, for that, as well as three for
- 35:051985, because the 85 is Better.
- 35:09Jon: mine is very different
- 35:10Ryan : I'm curious on that.
- 35:11So for the 2011 one, I recommend, first 19th, which is about like
- 35:16an Uber driver driving around these two females around the city.
- 35:20They're having a good time.
- 35:21And then.
- 35:22He finds out as they're feeding that they're vampires and they take him hostage
- 35:25and kind of force him to do their bidding.
- 35:27There's that one as well as Day Shift, which stars Jamie Foxx, as well as
- 35:32Dave Franco, who was in the 2011 Fright Night, they're vampire hunters.
- 35:35I've seen a little bit of it.
- 35:37It's very entertaining.
- 35:38It's funny.
- 35:39Jamie Foxx is, he's good in it.
- 35:41He's a good vampire hunter.
- 35:42Jon: Silence.
- 35:45Ryan : vampire hunter great, cameo, and he kicks ass.
- 35:48Snoop Doggy Dogg
- 35:50Kearns: for Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg
- 35:52instead
- 35:52Ryan : vampire hunters.
- 35:54Kearns: he has to kill her for society to continue because she's the queen, vampire.
- 35:58you can't just stake her through the heart.
- 36:00That's not gonna work this time We gotta find another way
- 36:02Ryan : Sunlight.
- 36:03A lot of sunlight.
- 36:04you gotta throw her in the sun.
- 36:06Kearns: You're going to see a recurring theme in future episodes.
- 36:08I want to see somebody kill Martha Stewart.
- 36:10idea is going to crop up again But Snoop Dogg rolling in is better than the cameo
- 36:14when he was Huggy Bear Starsky and Hutch,
- 36:16You can't bring in Snoop as a vampire hunter.
- 36:18I don't even remember the other people you mentioned, Oscar winner what?
- 36:22No, Snoop's here, who cares?
- 36:24Jon: a vampire
- 36:25Ryan : do Ray Charles
- 36:26Kearns: Oh please, can we
- 36:27Ryan : Yes.
- 36:28Jon: right?
- 36:30Ryan : he was the Vampire in Bones.
- 36:32Kearns: seen
- 36:33Ryan : Yes.
- 36:35Kearns: Or seen bones
- 36:37Ryan : 2002 Blast from the Past.
- 36:39I remember the art it looked like an album cover.
- 36:42As he's there, I'm like, oh, is he gonna sing Nope.
- 36:44Total opposite.
- 36:46Kearns: that's when you got your album covers from Sam Goody
- 36:48Jon: Yep
- 36:49Kearns: when the cover of an album mattered like you Were buying a CD or a
- 36:53record my god Do you remember when they were dueling for space vinyl versus CDs?
- 36:57And those middle bins anyway, I will continue to prattle on back
- 37:01Five
- 37:02Ryan : I just got three more.
- 37:03These are related to Fright Night 1985.
- 37:05If you love that movie, I recommend a movie called Vamp.
- 37:08It's just come up through Shudder, 5.
- 37:1199 again.
- 37:12It stars Grace Jones as a stripper vampire, and these three guys who
- 37:17are in college are trying to join a fraternity, and they're trying to, you
- 37:20know, Get like good with the fraternity.
- 37:22So they're going to hire strippers and they get locked into this strip
- 37:26club and have to fend for their lives.
- 37:29It's like pre from dust till dawn, to be honest, if I see it, but more 80 ish and
- 37:33Grace Jones in a red wig and white makeup.
- 37:36With really red lips.
- 37:38It's pretty, it's like an iconic image.
- 37:40I would say from that film,
- 37:41Kearns: I may be looking that up right now.
- 37:43Ryan : The second one is Jim Carrey's once bitten, Jada loves that movie.
- 37:47he turns into a vampire, meets the girl in the nightclub, and he has
- 37:49to have sex to reverse everything.
- 37:51people who love the original Fright Night will love as well, I think,
- 37:54cause it's like got the little horror element, and it's got the
- 37:57humor Number one, we talked about it earlier, Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
- 38:01I love the show, but the movie is very iconic.
- 38:04Christy Swanson, Donald Sutherland, Paul Reubens, Rucker Hauer, Luke
- 38:09Perry, Hilary Swank, David Arquette, Thomas Jane, and Stephen Rood.
- 38:13Are all in this great movie.
- 38:14Jon: get
- 38:14Ryan : it's got humor, horror and Rucker Hauer as the main villain
- 38:19is a treat, especially after, if you watch the hitcher blade runner,
- 38:23it's nice to see him do something zany, but serious at the same time.
- 38:27That's my top five, John.
- 38:28I got to hear your top five though.
- 38:30I'm curious which way you went.
- 38:32Thank you.
- 38:33Kearns: Yeah,
- 38:33Jon: so I went five other Tom Holland projects.
- 38:37Kearns: of course
- 38:37Ryan : Ooh,
- 38:39Jon: I mean, we have a writer, we have a director, he's done some acting.
- 38:45And I actually have two honorable mentions this time The Stephen King
- 38:49adaptation of Spinner, which he directed.
- 38:51Kearns: Yep.
- 38:52Jon: And his writing job on Psycho 2.
- 38:55the actual 5.
- 38:56Ryan : that was a good sequel.
- 38:57Jon: it was a pretty good sequel.
- 38:58I haven't seen it recently enough for it to be in my top 5.
- 39:02But it's a good sequel.
- 39:04number five is his episode of the Masters of Horror TV series It was
- 39:09called, We All Scream for Ice Cream.
- 39:11it's a childhood prank gone wrong.
- 39:13Kids kill an ice cream man clown, accidentally, years
- 39:18later, he comes back for revenge.
- 39:20It's probably the meltiest thing that's ever been on TV.
- 39:24My number four is Class of 1984, sort of biographical at this point.
- 39:30A new teacher versus a gang of punks in a rough school with
- 39:35Kearns: Yeah.
- 39:35Jon: Roddy McDowell and a young Michael J. Fox.
- 39:38my number two, Cloak and Dagger, which he wrote,
- 39:41Kearns: cloaking baggie.
- 39:43Jon: And Dabney Coleman, this regular kid and his imaginary friend accidentally
- 39:48stumble on equipment that spies are after and it turns into this whole like,
- 39:52spy movie, It's a nice nostalgic movie.
- 40:04about monsters, cinematic monsters, and a man played by Ray Wise,
- 40:09who believes they're real, in the earth, and knows how to find them.
- 40:13he leads the crew on a quest to find monsters
- 40:16Kearns: cool.
- 40:17Jon: Child's Play.
- 40:17Kearns: I really like
- 40:18Jon: Child's Play is number one.
- 40:19Kearns: it's back.
- 40:20Ryan : I can't wait to get to that episode.
- 40:21Good.
- 40:21I just can't wait.
- 40:22Kearns: Child's Play got perverted into kiddie movies.
- 40:25They got ruined.
- 40:26The original Child's Play is scary.
- 40:28Ryan : Oh yeah.
- 40:28Kearns: It's, the first minutes before they reveal him.
- 40:32You know when he's skulking around, you can't see him?
- 40:35Chucky I'm talking about?
- 40:36Ryan : The little footprints, a flower,
- 40:39Kearns: The knife they gave that thing?
- 40:40Diabolical, those bastards.
- 40:42That movie fucked me up.
- 40:44I was so young that was on my mother.
- 40:46I saw so many things I shouldn't have before I was 10 Child's Play
- 40:49was around when I was 4 or 5.
- 40:51I was probably younger than Daniel when I saw Child's Play.
- 40:54Ryan : it's got child in the movie, so it's okay for children.
- 40:57Kearns: I think that was
- 40:57Ryan : people saw it.
- 40:58Kearns: I remember it was with my family and they were like,
- 41:00let's rent boogie nights.
- 41:02I love the seventies and I made it about 20 minutes into it.
- 41:05I was like, I'm going to leave, now.
- 41:06Heather Graham is gorgeous, but she did just take off her
- 41:09clothes in front of my grandma.
- 41:10I think I'm out of here.
- 41:11child's play was a masterpiece, but it is, I always do find it
- 41:15interesting to see connection between an actor and a director.
- 41:19And, Humperdinck is in both films.
- 41:22Jon: One thing I want to point out about Tom Holland, is his local ties.
- 41:25He was born in Poughkeepsie,
- 41:27Kearns: Yeah.
- 41:27Jon: went to O'odham High School.
- 41:29Kearns: Oh, cool.
- 41:30Ryan : Wow.
- 41:30Jon: he's local
- 41:32Kearns: Is he
- 41:32Ryan : awesome.
- 41:32Jon: with us.
- 41:33Kearns: Let's find him.
- 41:34Jon: lives in this area
- 41:35Kearns: No, I didn't mean dead.
- 41:36I didn't didn't Tim Currum, Tim Currium.
- 41:39I'm just wondering if he still lives around here.
- 41:41Jon: I don't
- 41:41Kearns: Rest in peace, Tim, hopefully.
- 41:44that would be cool if we ran into him
- 41:46Jon: awesome.
- 41:46Kearns: and you would recognize him.
- 41:48Jon: Absolutely.
- 41:48Ryan : cool.
- 41:49Kearns: wouldn't it be neat if he just randomly decided to go to Connecticut
- 41:52Horror Fest and was walking around?
- 41:53But they don't do that sort of thing.
- 41:55Those are Bill Murray stories almost exclusively
- 41:58Jon: You know who used to be a story like
- 42:00Is Grandpa Munster, Al Lewis.
- 42:03Kearns: met him
- 42:03Jon: multiple times!
- 42:04He'd
- 42:05Kisco, then Manhattan, and then somewhere.
- 42:07He was everywhere all the time.
- 42:09Kearns: he connected with people really well I met him at a car show out of
- 42:12makeup He was just there to see cars I was or 12 my mom goes, Oh my God,
- 42:18that's, what did from the monsters?
- 42:20he turned around and started fucking with us because she didn't remember his name.
- 42:23Jon: hmm.
- 42:23Mm
- 42:24Kearns: He was a cool guy, He's a funny old man.
- 42:27That's a good reference Child's play.
- 42:29All right.
- 42:29local legends.
- 42:30Well, that's Xenomania episode five on Fright Night 1985 and Fright Night 2011.
- 42:37Hope you enjoyed and we're going to catch you next time.
- 42:40Next episode is going to be not on child's play.
- 42:42What's it going to be on boys?
- 42:44Ryan : Fright Night 2.
- 42:45Kearns: There's a big curve ball for everybody, but there's continuity.
- 42:48Hooray.
- 42:50it easy, everybody.
- 42:52Jon: ya!
