Transcript
- 0:17Speaker 1: Good morning, and welcome to jaggs A and Brian Sexton
- 0:20Speaker 1: in the host role today along with John Ozer. We've
- 0:22Speaker 1: got a big show for you. So of course let's
- 0:24Speaker 1: start with big things. And big thing one is new territory.
- 0:28Speaker 1: In this the thirty second NFL Draft that the Jaguars
- 0:32Speaker 1: will participate, it will be the first time that they
- 0:34Speaker 1: don't have a first round pick. That is obviously new
- 0:37Speaker 1: territory for the Jaguars, but it's not for some of
- 0:40Speaker 1: the men who are calling the shots. And we heard
- 0:43Speaker 1: from James Gladstone and Liam Cohen.
- 0:46Speaker 2: That this is familiar territory for them.
- 0:49Speaker 3: You know.
- 0:49Speaker 2: He has been yeah, a lot longer before. Yeah, there
- 0:54Speaker 2: is no doubt about it.
- 0:56Speaker 3: We have waited longer, there is no doubt. But we're
- 0:59Speaker 3: having a black one oh four was our first pick,
- 1:04Speaker 3: so we at least get to cut that in half
- 1:05Speaker 3: a little bit, you know what I mean. So there's
- 1:08Speaker 3: a what do we got two weeks one day for now?
- 1:13Speaker 3: So that's yeah, it will until our pick, yeah for now. Right,
- 1:19Speaker 3: So that kind of thing you always have, the you're
- 1:22Speaker 3: always gonna stay agile and so you're never bored. You're
- 1:26Speaker 3: always thinking through what might we be able to do.
- 1:30Speaker 3: And I think that mental gymnastics certainly is an engaging element.
- 1:36Speaker 1: You know, John, I don't get the sense listening to them,
- 1:38Speaker 1: and I didn't when I was in the room last
- 1:40Speaker 1: Thursday that this is like the Rams after they won
- 1:42Speaker 1: the Super Bowl, where it was like, yeah, those picks,
- 1:44Speaker 1: forget the first round picks. I think that's what f
- 1:46Speaker 1: those picks meant. But these are guys who are not
- 1:50Speaker 1: uncomfortable with the fact that sitting at number fifty six,
- 1:53Speaker 1: they're going to have to run a lot of different scenarios,
- 1:56Speaker 1: but they're comfortable that they can get what they want.
- 1:58Speaker 4: Well, look, some of the scenarios do include, you know,
- 2:04Speaker 4: trading up. I get a lot of emails about what
- 2:06Speaker 4: can they trade to the first round. I'm not so
- 2:09Speaker 4: sure the Jaguars are concerned about where they trade up.
- 2:12Speaker 4: It'll be they're sitting at fifty six and they've got
- 2:14Speaker 4: a little bit of equity in the third round. Actually,
- 2:17Speaker 4: they have a lot of equity in the third round.
- 2:19Speaker 4: But how far do they want to move up? I
- 2:21Speaker 4: don't think they're sitting there. Well, we've got to get
- 2:23Speaker 4: into the first round. As guys fall or as certain
- 2:26Speaker 4: groups become available at certain groups. I think they will say, okay,
- 2:30Speaker 4: do we want to get up to there. Maybe that's
- 2:32Speaker 4: thirty six, maybe that's forty eight. Maybe it's not moving
- 2:35Speaker 4: up at all, But no, James Gladstone won't be bored.
- 2:39Speaker 4: As Liam Cohen said when he was with the Rams,
- 2:43Speaker 4: there was some hanging out at the beach house. Yea,
- 2:46Speaker 4: I don't think that. I don't think they'll be at
- 2:48Speaker 4: the beach house. Certainly not my beach house because I
- 2:50Speaker 4: don't have a beach house. But I don't think that'll
- 2:53Speaker 4: be the case. They're a little too far up to
- 2:55Speaker 4: have it be a completely dead first night for the Jaguars.
- 2:59Speaker 5: Next. What is it Thursday now, bright?
- 3:01Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it's a week from Thursday. One noticeable difference.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Though teams generally run a lot of mock drafts. They
- 3:06Speaker 1: have somebody on their team scouting or coaching that's responsible
- 3:09Speaker 1: for each team and researching and digging and try to
- 3:11Speaker 1: find out who they're interested in so that they can
- 3:14Speaker 1: kind of run a scenario in the first round. At
- 3:16Speaker 1: fifty six, that's harder to do, and Gladstone talked about
- 3:19Speaker 1: scenarios instead of monts. In other words, what do you
- 3:21Speaker 1: do when there's these players on the board, John, it's
- 3:24Speaker 1: a bit of a different mindset, and that I think
- 3:26Speaker 1: was where their experience comes in.
- 3:28Speaker 4: Yeah, you start looking at it in groups, meaning, Okay,
- 3:32Speaker 4: now we've gotten to about maybe thirty six, or we
- 3:35Speaker 4: get in about forty four, and you don't necessarily trade
- 3:39Speaker 4: up for a player, but it's are there enough guys
- 3:43Speaker 4: left at this spot that we think will fall beneath
- 3:46Speaker 4: us that we want to trade back and row okay?
- 3:49Speaker 4: Or is there a position group starting to run out
- 3:51Speaker 4: that we need to get ahead of some certain teams?
- 3:54Speaker 4: And Gladstone on Thursday certainly talked about how they try
- 3:59Speaker 4: to research not only what they think teams want right now,
- 4:04Speaker 4: but ad decision making patterns of certain trees. He mentioned
- 4:09Speaker 4: certain ways that groups of people who run these teams draft.
- 4:15Speaker 4: It's certainly more scientific than it was in the nineties
- 4:17Speaker 4: Brian when we talked about teams would send a guy
- 4:20Speaker 4: and sort of him study the draft and guess what
- 4:22Speaker 4: that team was doing. There's a lot of analytics involved
- 4:25Speaker 4: about directions these people go and it helps to shape
- 4:28Speaker 4: the Jaguars draft strategy.
- 4:29Speaker 2: All right.
- 4:30Speaker 1: On the big thing too old and new, the Jaguars
- 4:33Speaker 1: have some players from last year's draft, John, but didn't
- 4:36Speaker 1: see the field much, if at all. Wyatt Milan mc
- 4:38Speaker 1: guard who played a little bit at the end of
- 4:39Speaker 1: the year, stands out, so to safety Caleb Ransaw, also
- 4:43Speaker 1: linebacker Jalen McLeod, and the most notable of those is
- 4:47Speaker 1: Travis Hunter, the first round draft choice who played in
- 4:49Speaker 1: just nine games last year and missed half the.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Season, and he was asked.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Gladstone and Liam were both asked about Travis Hunter's return
- 4:57Speaker 1: and where their protocol fit as they get ready to
- 5:01Speaker 1: start the program next week.
- 5:03Speaker 3: Yeah, he'll be in for all intensive purposes, a limited
- 5:06Speaker 3: participant throughout the off season program, with eyes on return
- 5:09Speaker 3: to play at full tick in training camp.
- 5:12Speaker 1: So, John, there are a number of guys to be
- 5:14Speaker 1: excited about, talented young players that we saw a glimpse of.
- 5:18Speaker 1: I mean, Caleb Ramshaw was really having a nice camp.
- 5:20Speaker 1: White Milam looked apart as well. As much as we're
- 5:23Speaker 1: going to talk about the eleven players that the drag
- 5:26Speaker 1: Wars will likely add next week, there's a couple from
- 5:28Speaker 1: last year that are worthy of paying.
- 5:30Speaker 4: Attention to well, and the couple from last year are
- 5:33Speaker 4: perhaps more worthy because they're going into that second year.
- 5:36Speaker 4: Travis Hunter has, you know, unfortunately not enough games under
- 5:39Speaker 4: his belt for everybody to know exactly how what his
- 5:44Speaker 4: usage is going to look like. But he has enough
- 5:46Speaker 4: to have gained some experience and to have gotten used
- 5:49Speaker 4: to the speed of the league. So look, milam Ransaw,
- 5:54Speaker 4: you know Hunter. I don't want to say these guys
- 5:58Speaker 4: are more important than the twenty five in the twenty
- 6:01Speaker 4: six draft, but they're up there because you expect a
- 6:04Speaker 4: second year jump, and you expect in that second year
- 6:06Speaker 4: of a draft class to start getting the accelerated help.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Usually with rookie draft classes, they're not gonna make the
- 6:14Speaker 4: difference whether you go to the playoffs or not. Second
- 6:17Speaker 4: and third year, those draft classes need to be a
- 6:19Speaker 4: core and with milam Ransaw and Hunter especially, this needs
- 6:24Speaker 4: to be the year where it sort of starts looking
- 6:27Speaker 4: like that's a core class.
- 6:28Speaker 1: And let's round out big things with Monday message. The
- 6:33Speaker 1: players return next week to begin the offseason program. You
- 6:36Speaker 1: know what goes in phases. In the first phase, there's
- 6:38Speaker 1: hardly any coaching involved, but there will be a team
- 6:40Speaker 1: meeting and the head coach was as last Thursday, what
- 6:43Speaker 1: the message would be to his team.
- 6:45Speaker 6: You're chomping at the bit, especially after going to the
- 6:47Speaker 6: owners meetings and talking some smack and having some fun.
- 6:51Speaker 2: But also it just feels a little.
- 6:52Speaker 6: Bit closer right as getting the guys back in the
- 6:55Speaker 6: building and the entire messages were attacking this offseason and
- 7:02Speaker 6: we're attacking the details, We're attacking our relationships, We're attacking
- 7:06Speaker 6: our communication because there's gonna there's new, there's change, there's
- 7:11Speaker 6: different communications and relationships that need to be blended and
- 7:14Speaker 6: matched and and.
- 7:17Speaker 2: You know, pouring into each other. Uh. From a detail.
- 7:20Speaker 6: Standpoint, I think that's gonna be key and critical.
- 7:24Speaker 2: John.
- 7:25Speaker 1: They're not on the field yet and they're a long
- 7:27Speaker 1: way from the start of the new season, but there
- 7:30Speaker 1: is an energy to this coaching staff that I expect
- 7:33Speaker 1: to be translated to the players when they get back
- 7:35Speaker 1: here about what they need to get done. And one
- 7:37Speaker 1: of the other things that Liam mentioned is they have
- 7:39Speaker 1: two fewer weeks to get the same amount of work
- 7:42Speaker 1: done this year because they're not starting early like teams
- 7:45Speaker 1: with new head coaches do.
- 7:46Speaker 2: So the head coach isn't going to miss an.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Opportunity to translate that to his team when he sees
- 7:50Speaker 1: them on Monday.
- 7:51Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 7:52Speaker 4: I talked to Liam probably February, I think was the
- 7:54Speaker 4: first time I talked to him after everything. It's sort
- 7:56Speaker 4: of uh cooled down from the season. And that was
- 8:00Speaker 4: the first thing you mentioned was, Hey, we've only got
- 8:02Speaker 4: you know, we have two fewer weeks with these.
- 8:04Speaker 5: Guys, and how does.
- 8:06Speaker 4: He help the coaching staff and the players realize we
- 8:10Speaker 4: have to get as much or more out of this
- 8:12Speaker 4: time with two weeks less. Everything that Liam has said
- 8:16Speaker 4: in the off season is sort of a variation on
- 8:19Speaker 4: a very crucial but obvious theme. Look, last year's last year,
- 8:24Speaker 4: the energy that got created around this building was because
- 8:28Speaker 4: everybody was new and everybody was learning each other, and
- 8:32Speaker 4: there's that excitement we all felt at Brian. Liam's concern
- 8:38Speaker 4: and concern is probably the wrong word, but his task
- 8:41Speaker 4: make sure that this year feels as new, feels as
- 8:44Speaker 4: important as energetic urgency, all that stuff. Make sure you
- 8:49Speaker 4: know you got to push the rock all the way
- 8:50Speaker 4: back up the hill and that you have the.
- 8:52Speaker 5: Urgency to do it.
- 8:54Speaker 4: Look, Brian, you've been around Lee as much as I have.
- 8:57Speaker 4: I don't worry about him feeling that sort of energy.
- 9:02Speaker 4: The fact that it's so focused right now, and that's
- 9:05Speaker 4: such the theme means. I don't think it'll be an
- 9:07Speaker 4: issue at all, but it's certainly the theme.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Listen, when the players walk in, feel real confident they're
- 9:12Speaker 1: going to feel it because all of us who come
- 9:13Speaker 1: into the middle of Electric Center can feel it from
- 9:16Speaker 1: them as well. All Right, that'll do it for the
- 9:18Speaker 1: big thing segment of our outstanding show this morning.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Looking forward, we'll turn our.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Eye to number fifty six, and no, sadly we're not
- 9:25Speaker 1: talking about our buddy Jeff Logoman.
- 9:27Speaker 2: We'll talk about the Jaguars first pick.
- 9:29Speaker 1: In the twenty twenty six NFL Draft when we return
- 9:32Speaker 1: to Drags Am and welcome back to Jags Am Brian
- 9:42Speaker 1: Sexton along with John Oser here on a Tuesday morning,
- 9:46Speaker 1: ten days before the twenty twenty six NFL Draft. And John,
- 9:49Speaker 1: I'm sure you feel the same way. It's strange to
- 9:52Speaker 1: not have a first round pick and to be dialed
- 9:55Speaker 1: in on very specific prospects because you get to number
- 9:59Speaker 1: fifty six, you just don't know who's going to be around.
- 10:02Speaker 4: Yeah, there's a pocket of guys in positions that you
- 10:05Speaker 4: read about a little bit. Jacob Rodriguez from Texas Tech.
- 10:08Speaker 4: A linebacker is a guy that a lot of people
- 10:10Speaker 4: mock in that spot when you can find mock drafts
- 10:14Speaker 4: because sometimes you know, most people who do mock drafts
- 10:17Speaker 4: and analyze it stop at thirty two. So this team
- 10:19Speaker 4: is twenty four slots away from that. So I think
- 10:23Speaker 4: the best way to think about this draft is, you
- 10:26Speaker 4: know what Gladstone said last week, they feel like a
- 10:31Speaker 4: lot of the positions they're going to go after or
- 10:34Speaker 4: that they want to address our deep positions, and that
- 10:37Speaker 4: would include the linebacker off the ball, especially it's one
- 10:41Speaker 4: of the best classes they've had in a long time.
- 10:44Speaker 4: Edge if you're looking for a third edge.
- 10:46Speaker 5: Behind Trayvon and who is josh heinz Allen.
- 10:49Speaker 4: That is a position that is said to be deep.
- 10:53Speaker 4: Now what you wonder is usually that outside back or
- 10:57Speaker 4: edge guy if they're after the first round. It sometimes
- 11:01Speaker 4: takes more than a year for them to really show up.
- 11:04Speaker 5: But that's not a rule.
- 11:06Speaker 4: Safety, which is another area they could look at, is
- 11:08Speaker 4: also considered very deep. So those are the spots when
- 11:12Speaker 4: you think about this draft. That's the first concept is
- 11:16Speaker 4: that those spots are relatively deep. Running Backs not it's
- 11:20Speaker 4: considered a poor running back class, but you can always
- 11:23Speaker 4: find guys. So if they're looking for that extra dynamic
- 11:26Speaker 4: in that maybe something you have to go after early.
- 11:32Speaker 4: The key for this draft for the Jaguars is probably
- 11:34Speaker 4: not having the fifty sixth pick. It's having eighty one,
- 11:38Speaker 4: eighty eight, and one hundred, which are the three picks
- 11:41Speaker 4: that are near the end of.
- 11:42Speaker 5: The third round.
- 11:43Speaker 4: That's where you wonder could they use that equity to
- 11:46Speaker 4: make their draft day look different than the lead up?
- 11:49Speaker 4: Meaning could they trade up, could they move around? Are
- 11:51Speaker 4: they going to want four out of the top hundred
- 11:52Speaker 4: picks or do they want to move up maybe to
- 11:55Speaker 4: thirty five to forty. That's something we don't know, but
- 11:59Speaker 4: it's something to watch on Friday night.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Have you looked how much would it cost to be
- 12:03Speaker 1: able to go up? I mean, I mean I think
- 12:04Speaker 1: getting into the first round would be prohibitively expensive.
- 12:07Speaker 4: Well, according to the chart, and there's the old Jimmy
- 12:10Speaker 4: Johnson chart that is sort of still the one that
- 12:14Speaker 4: you know, the chart is a little bit of a misnomer.
- 12:17Speaker 4: It's great to have it, but if two teams decide
- 12:20Speaker 4: what a price is, you don't have to worry about
- 12:21Speaker 4: the chart. But According to the chart, it would take
- 12:25Speaker 4: probably all three third round picks to get up to
- 12:30Speaker 4: twenty five thirty, if another team would even be willing
- 12:34Speaker 4: to do that, Because you can say that value is there.
- 12:37Speaker 4: But if a team's sitting at twenty five, they may
- 12:41Speaker 4: not want your three third round picks. You can say, well,
- 12:44Speaker 4: there's no point in being like me at the grocery
- 12:46Speaker 4: store and saying this is what the price is. Well
- 12:49Speaker 4: the price. You can't sit there with another team and say, well,
- 12:52Speaker 4: the chart says this, because they're like, I don't care
- 12:54Speaker 4: about the chart.
- 12:55Speaker 5: So I don't.
- 12:57Speaker 4: It seems cost prohibitive to get into the but that
- 13:04Speaker 4: never matters once.
- 13:06Speaker 5: You're on the phone. The other thing to remember with
- 13:07Speaker 5: this draft is.
- 13:10Speaker 4: This draft overall in the first round is not projected
- 13:14Speaker 4: to be as good as next year's draft. So I've
- 13:16Speaker 4: gotten questions about, well, could they just you think about
- 13:19Speaker 4: this as a concept.
- 13:21Speaker 5: They have no first round pick?
- 13:22Speaker 4: Could you theoretically trade up trade next year's first to
- 13:26Speaker 4: get up into that and just keep doing that? Sure,
- 13:30Speaker 4: but I don't know that teams are going to want
- 13:33Speaker 4: next year to give away a first round pick if
- 13:36Speaker 4: you try that again.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Well, I've heard from people around the league that you
- 13:38Speaker 1: definitely don't want to give away next year's first round.
- 13:41Speaker 5: Right.
- 13:41Speaker 1: That's how good the draft is, not just in players, John,
- 13:44Speaker 1: but also in terms of value. So if you're looking
- 13:47Speaker 1: next year, if you have a first round pick in
- 13:49Speaker 1: twenty twenty seven and none of those guys necessarily fit you,
- 13:52Speaker 1: the leverage that you've got, yeah, it's just twenty twenty
- 13:55Speaker 1: seven is not something to give up.
- 13:57Speaker 4: Also, this is not a year necessarily it's CONSI I
- 14:02Speaker 4: don't really talked to James Gladstone about it, but I
- 14:04Speaker 4: assume part of their thought with giving up the pick
- 14:07Speaker 4: last year was it was it uh, they project, they
- 14:11Speaker 4: sort of know what drafts might look like. I think
- 14:14Speaker 4: the thought was this was not going to be a
- 14:17Speaker 4: great first round this year. It is a year where
- 14:20Speaker 4: you it is said that you should be able to
- 14:24Speaker 4: get linebacker late where they are sitting at fifty six,
- 14:28Speaker 4: and that it is a good year for depth and
- 14:30Speaker 4: contributors in the third round.
- 14:32Speaker 5: So you've got three picks.
- 14:34Speaker 4: I don't necessarily think that you can look for a
- 14:37Speaker 4: Day one starter out of that third round. But as
- 14:40Speaker 4: James Gladstone said last week, after the top fifty, you're
- 14:44Speaker 4: looking for contributors in that fifty to one hundred and
- 14:48Speaker 4: fifty type range. They've got four picks there or five
- 14:51Speaker 4: picks there, so it could be a good depth for
- 14:55Speaker 4: the core and for the you know, for the nuts,
- 15:00Speaker 4: both of the franchise of you. I may not be
- 15:01Speaker 4: a star, but it could be a lot of guys
- 15:03Speaker 4: we're talking about for a while.
- 15:04Speaker 2: Second draft.
- 15:05Speaker 1: With James Gladstone leading the effort along with Tony Boselli
- 15:08Speaker 1: and Liam Cohen, you have a sense where they fit
- 15:10Speaker 1: on the best player available because look could be really
- 15:12Speaker 1: easy and I think most people, based on your mock
- 15:15Speaker 1: draft tracker, look at the Jaguars and say the picks
- 15:17Speaker 1: are destined for defense. They need safety, they need linebacker.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Just go and spend defense.
- 15:23Speaker 1: And James gave a nuanced answer about best player available
- 15:27Speaker 1: last week. What's your sense of where this team will draft.
- 15:30Speaker 4: I think this team drafts like most teams draft. You
- 15:34Speaker 4: go into the draft wanting to stick with best available
- 15:38Speaker 4: player as much as you possibly can. It's a little
- 15:41Speaker 4: bit of a silly thing to think you're actually gonna
- 15:43Speaker 4: do that, because you're not. If the best available is
- 15:46Speaker 4: a wide receiver at every pick, you're not gonna pick
- 15:48Speaker 4: eleven wide receivers. That's silly. So his nuanced answer was basically, yes,
- 15:54Speaker 4: you look at best available player, but positional comes into it,
- 15:58Speaker 4: and so I think that's the way they'll broach it.
- 16:02Speaker 4: They are in a situation where they don't have to
- 16:05Speaker 4: draft for need for any position. You could say that
- 16:09Speaker 4: linebackers in need. They have Ventro Miller who can line
- 16:11Speaker 4: up in Devin Lloyd's spot, and I don't think they
- 16:13Speaker 4: lose any sleep doing that.
- 16:15Speaker 5: Defensive tackle is that in.
- 16:16Speaker 4: Need, probably, but you have Eric Armstead, you have Devon Hamilton.
- 16:20Speaker 4: Trayvon I think is going to play a little more
- 16:22Speaker 4: inside rush, so they don't feel like they're desperate at
- 16:25Speaker 4: any spot. Usually teams strive to get in that situation
- 16:30Speaker 4: before the draft, and I think they have so.
- 16:32Speaker 2: One thought on the defensive tackle.
- 16:34Speaker 1: And James had an answer on this one as well,
- 16:36Speaker 1: and that is that you don't necessarily see that penetrating
- 16:40Speaker 1: defensive tackle, right, I mean, they know what that looks like.
- 16:43Speaker 1: They were in Los Angeles where Aaron Donald and he
- 16:45Speaker 1: is probably the all time greatest pass rusher from the inside.
- 16:50Speaker 1: You're not looking for defensive tackles to necessarily do that,
- 16:53Speaker 1: but you are necessarily looking at guys who might develop
- 16:57Speaker 1: into that. And I thought it was an interesting answer
- 17:00Speaker 1: because he was saying, we are looking for guys that
- 17:03Speaker 1: can develop.
- 17:04Speaker 4: Yeah, And usually once you get past a certain point,
- 17:09Speaker 4: and it depends on what the draft looks like, meaning
- 17:13Speaker 4: how good is the draft where you.
- 17:15Speaker 5: Sit in it.
- 17:16Speaker 4: But there comes a point fifth round where you start
- 17:19Speaker 4: looking for traits where you don't necessarily you know, you
- 17:22Speaker 4: know you're gonna miss on a certain percentage of guys
- 17:25Speaker 4: once you get there. So you're looking for the trade.
- 17:27Speaker 4: What do I see in a player that makes me
- 17:31Speaker 4: think they may be able to make it. With Quinn
- 17:32Speaker 4: Allen Junior, for example, last year, the toughness, the savvy,
- 17:37Speaker 4: the you.
- 17:38Speaker 5: Know, the football love, the ability to block.
- 17:42Speaker 4: Maybe you saw that and said, well, you know what,
- 17:43Speaker 4: that's a thing that we know he can do. Let's
- 17:46Speaker 4: get him in here and see if he can do
- 17:48Speaker 4: at the NFL level. So usually a corner wide receiver,
- 17:51Speaker 4: you're looking for your speed, ability to high point the ball,
- 17:53Speaker 4: something that makes you think, okay, that could turn into
- 17:56Speaker 4: his NFL superpower if you will sure give them a
- 18:00Speaker 4: chance to make it against these guys who clearly have
- 18:03Speaker 4: more traits than that, but maybe we can develop this one.
- 18:06Speaker 1: So next Friday, pardon me, Next Thursday appears to be
- 18:09Speaker 1: a light day for the Jags, right, they'll be paying attention.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Everything's going on, at least just right now, not being
- 18:14Speaker 1: in the first round, but Friday four picks in the
- 18:19Speaker 1: top one hundred fifty six, eighty one, eighty eight and
- 18:21Speaker 1: one hundred and so we'll have live coverage for you
- 18:25Speaker 1: next Friday.
- 18:25Speaker 4: If there is a beach house involved, you'd like to know, Well, look,
- 18:29Speaker 4: I don't want to beg but I mean, I'm just
- 18:32Speaker 4: throwing it out there.
- 18:32Speaker 5: If there is a beach.
- 18:33Speaker 2: House involved, maybe we can evolve.
- 18:35Speaker 4: They have my digits, maybe we can evolve in this one.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Did I listen?
- 18:38Speaker 1: I am never surprised by your verbiage, my friend. When
- 18:41Speaker 1: you use words for your work, what do you always
- 18:44Speaker 1: say when you work with words, words are your work?
- 18:47Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 18:48Speaker 1: All right, when we come back, we'll dive into the
- 18:50Speaker 1: ozone speaking of John's words and answer a couple of
- 18:52Speaker 1: questions for you.
- 18:53Speaker 2: This is jagsam, but we're back right after.
- 18:55Speaker 1: This this frit all right, here we go diving into
- 19:08Speaker 1: the ozone mail bag. You follow it on the website
- 19:11Speaker 1: on your mobile phone and now you get the live
- 19:14Speaker 1: version of John Oser read this.
- 19:18Speaker 2: I was born ready buy Alright, here we.
- 19:19Speaker 1: Go from Greg from the Mean Fields of EHS.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Do you know what EHS is?
- 19:24Speaker 5: Fastcall high school? Right, mean Fields of EHS.
- 19:29Speaker 4: Greg was actually a couple of years ahead of.
- 19:31Speaker 2: Me at e fiscoal mean Fields.
- 19:33Speaker 4: It's one of those guys that's here, look up to
- 19:36Speaker 4: the kind of fear in the seventh grade.
- 19:39Speaker 5: Not unlike you.
- 19:40Speaker 1: I was trying to recall whether another year with the
- 19:44Speaker 1: Jaguars they were more aligned with the VPA the best
- 19:47Speaker 1: Available Player strategy somewhere in the late nineteen nineties question Mark.
- 19:51Speaker 4: Yeah. It's the point is, you know, it feels like
- 19:56Speaker 4: this team really doesn't have any glaring me going into
- 20:00Speaker 4: the draft, and all GM's work to get to this point.
- 20:05Speaker 4: I see Greg's point. I kind of think there's been
- 20:08Speaker 4: a lot of years where you've felt like that going
- 20:09Speaker 4: into the draft, and I think the matter is are
- 20:13Speaker 4: you deluding yourself if you feel that way? And I
- 20:16Speaker 4: think this team particularly is probably saying, hey, we're not.
- 20:20Speaker 4: You know, we have more needs, we have more stuff
- 20:23Speaker 4: to figure out than most people think because they want
- 20:26Speaker 4: to think that way. They don't want to feel like, oh,
- 20:27Speaker 4: we're set here, we're set there, We've got to keep
- 20:29Speaker 4: getting better. But to Greg's point, I do think it's
- 20:33Speaker 4: a year where you don't have If you're sitting at
- 20:37Speaker 4: fifty six, you don't have to and all the linebackers
- 20:41Speaker 4: you like are gone. You don't have to get desperate
- 20:44Speaker 4: and pick a guy you don't like. You can pull
- 20:46Speaker 4: back and say, you know what, we've got guys on
- 20:48Speaker 4: the roster who can do this. We just don't see
- 20:51Speaker 4: the value at this spot. We can go different directions.
- 20:54Speaker 4: So I think they're in good shape. But I don't
- 20:58Speaker 4: feel like the team is looking at their rock saying hey,
- 21:00Speaker 4: we're set.
- 21:01Speaker 1: No, and we can go back to what we talked
- 21:03Speaker 1: about off the top. You've got some players in safety, right,
- 21:05Speaker 1: so you lose Dewy wingerd in free agency, but you're
- 21:07Speaker 1: bringing Caleb Bransaw in.
- 21:09Speaker 4: That's supposed to be the if then scenario.
- 21:12Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, you know.
- 21:13Speaker 1: White Milam by all accounts, looked really good last year
- 21:17Speaker 1: before he suffered a knee injury at the end of
- 21:18Speaker 1: training camp that slowed him all season long. And I
- 21:21Speaker 1: watched Jalen McLeod who's an off the ball linebacker. When
- 21:24Speaker 1: he was practicing late last year, he never made it
- 21:26Speaker 1: to the active roster. So I mean it's these picks
- 21:30Speaker 1: where the Jaguars are picking. They create value players like
- 21:34Speaker 1: the ones we're talking about. It's the range of milam
- 21:36Speaker 1: in Ransaw and and if McLoud is what they think he.
- 21:39Speaker 4: Is, I see people mocking high corner in safety. And
- 21:45Speaker 4: that's easy to say because you you look at the
- 21:50Speaker 4: depth chart and say, well, they need a safety. Well,
- 21:54Speaker 4: as you say to them, ran Saw is a draft
- 21:58Speaker 4: pick and he needs to be the guy coming in.
- 22:01Speaker 2: So I thinks to the depth of the roster that
- 22:03Speaker 2: you remember, well, it.
- 22:05Speaker 4: Speaks to the fact that they're in good shape going
- 22:08Speaker 4: into this draft. All right.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Up next from the o jone mailbag, we bring in
- 22:14Speaker 1: Bradley from Death Valley, California. How do you think a
- 22:16Speaker 1: redraft of the twenty one draft would go? Knowing what
- 22:20Speaker 1: we know now?
- 22:22Speaker 4: Well, and the question is, would Trevor still go number
- 22:26Speaker 4: one over players like Michael Parsons and soul Jamar Chase.
- 22:31Speaker 5: The way the NFL works, I think he would go
- 22:33Speaker 5: number one.
- 22:33Speaker 4: And I'm not saying he has had a better career
- 22:37Speaker 4: than those four. Michael Parsons has had a better career
- 22:40Speaker 4: for his position than Trevor Lawrence. I'd say Jamar Chase
- 22:43Speaker 4: has two. If you're redrafting something you draft based on quarterback.
- 22:49Speaker 4: Trevor has turned into a franchise quarterback. Maybe there's people
- 22:55Speaker 4: are in the league who would fel different. I'd be
- 22:57Speaker 4: hard pressed not to take the quarterback number one overall,
- 23:00Speaker 4: given those five, given the importance of the position.
- 23:02Speaker 2: No argument there.
- 23:03Speaker 1: All right, let's wrap up this version of the Ozone
- 23:06Speaker 1: mail Bag Live even person with John Ozier. I see
- 23:09Speaker 1: no mention of offensive lineman with the Jaguars in the draft.
- 23:12Speaker 1: This seems weird. Line was good last year, not great.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Why can't we try to be great? That's from Bill
- 23:17Speaker 1: in Jacksby.
- 23:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 23:19Speaker 5: I don't really want to hang out with Bill.
- 23:20Speaker 4: You know, he seems given to the negative, but which
- 23:25Speaker 4: I am to, so you don't need two at the
- 23:27Speaker 4: same table. I don't quite know what he has seen
- 23:33Speaker 4: that makes no he's talk an offensive line. They are
- 23:35Speaker 4: in a position where they're bringing back.
- 23:38Speaker 5: All key guys.
- 23:40Speaker 4: As you said, Wyatt Mylin's there, and he's that jar
- 23:45Speaker 4: on the shelf.
- 23:45Speaker 5: If you will so Jonah Bahen as well.
- 23:48Speaker 4: I would be surprised if, out of what I said,
- 23:53Speaker 4: they have four in the top one hundred that gets
- 23:55Speaker 4: you to round three. They have another one in round four.
- 23:59Speaker 4: That's five. I'd be a little surprised if one of
- 24:01Speaker 4: those five not an offensive linemen, because I think that's
- 24:04Speaker 4: how this team is going to build block their offensive line.
- 24:09Speaker 4: I don't know that they're crying in the back that
- 24:11Speaker 4: they don't have a first round pick. I don't think
- 24:13Speaker 4: they feel like they need to get desperate and fill
- 24:16Speaker 4: an offensive line spot. But I certainly think they will
- 24:19Speaker 4: continue to try to improve that area. Because Bill, as
- 24:23Speaker 4: cynical as he may be, is right. They weren't a
- 24:25Speaker 4: great offensive line. They were a better offensive line they
- 24:29Speaker 4: have been. They were functional, they were winning. But they
- 24:32Speaker 4: definitely want to keep getting better because they want that
- 24:34Speaker 4: to be the foundation piece of the franchise.
- 24:36Speaker 1: But I'd like to remind Bill and anyone who is
- 24:38Speaker 1: thinking along those lines, though, that as long as Tony
- 24:40Speaker 1: Biselli's in the room, yeah, and you have eleven picks,
- 24:43Speaker 1: there will be offensive line yes, under heavy consideration. And
- 24:46Speaker 1: that is something that both Liam and James emphasized last week.
- 24:51Speaker 1: During their news conference. We'll come back and wrap up
- 24:54Speaker 1: this edition to Jags Am in just a moment. But
- 25:06Speaker 1: here's a reminder to you, just in case you don't
- 25:08Speaker 1: get downtown very often. The stadium in the future is under construction,
- 25:13Speaker 1: and it seems like every time you come down here
- 25:15Speaker 1: you see something else that's new and opening. And in
- 25:19Speaker 1: twenty twenty eight that stadium will post. The Daguars will
- 25:23Speaker 1: be here in twenty six. Now we're Orlando, we know
- 25:25Speaker 1: in twenty twenty seven. The stadium isn't the only thing
- 25:28Speaker 1: under construction. The roster is John and Tony Boselli has
- 25:32Speaker 1: a big hand in that.
- 25:33Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, at the draft lunch in last week
- 25:37Speaker 4: a lot of topics covered. I think the one that
- 25:39Speaker 4: stood out to me was when I think Liam I'm
- 25:42Speaker 4: not even sure he was asked this specifically, but sort
- 25:45Speaker 4: of volunteered and got to this point of, look, with
- 25:48Speaker 4: Tony in the room, every prospect that's discussed got to
- 25:53Speaker 4: be able to block, got to be able to tackle,
- 25:55Speaker 4: and is he tough? Yeah, I'm paraphrasing that a little bit.
- 25:58Speaker 4: But I have people ask me sometimes what does an
- 26:00Speaker 4: EVP do? And I asked Tony that and he he says,
- 26:04Speaker 4: I have no idea, but I think that if you
- 26:09Speaker 4: wonder what having bow around the Hall of Fame or
- 26:12Speaker 4: the left tackle, the identity of what this was in
- 26:15Speaker 4: the nineties, to me, that's the influence there always, you know,
- 26:20Speaker 4: looking at a guy. Yeah, yeah, it's all great, but
- 26:24Speaker 4: it is he these things? Does he fit? Is he tough?
- 26:28Speaker 4: Can we count on him? So I thought that comment
- 26:33Speaker 4: was interesting insight into what Tony briks.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Well, listen, leave comebs the head coach, right, so he
- 26:37Speaker 1: sets the standard for this team, much like Tom Kauflin did.
- 26:40Speaker 1: But the one thing that I have seen from Tony
- 26:42Speaker 1: Boselli in the last years since he started in this
- 26:44Speaker 1: role is that he enforces the standard.
- 26:46Speaker 5: Sure.
- 26:47Speaker 1: I mean everyone who knows him. He doesn't have to
- 26:49Speaker 1: wear the gold jackets he walks through.
- 26:50Speaker 4: The hallway, although he does, which is a little off put.
- 26:54Speaker 2: But the standard is set.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Everybody stands a little a little taller, right, wants to
- 26:59Speaker 1: perform a little bit. When they know that the Hall
- 27:01Speaker 1: of Famer is there, they measure themselves against it.
- 27:04Speaker 2: So it's been a.
- 27:05Speaker 1: Really good dynamic to date and it's exciting to see
- 27:08Speaker 1: what they're going to do next.
- 27:09Speaker 2: Week.
- 27:09Speaker 1: We'll be back next week. I think we go Wednesday
- 27:11Speaker 1: for the show next week. Sure if the day before
- 27:13Speaker 1: the first round of the Draft, we'll be here. I
- 27:16Speaker 1: hope you'll join us. Thanks for being part of Jags AM.
- 27:19Speaker 1: Have a great day.
