• 1:59
Speaker 2: Heat index about 105 today with an actual air temp
• 2:02
Speaker 2: in the mid-90s. Clear, muggy, warm tonight. Lows in the mid-70s.
• 2:05
Speaker 2: Heat index close to 110 tomorrow with an actual temperature
• 2:09
Speaker 2: in the upper 90s. And with that, heat could come
• 2:11
Speaker 2: a late day. shower, thunderstorm, cloudy on Friday, some showers
• 2:14
Speaker 2: and storms around. Have to keep a close eye on
• 2:16
Speaker 2: that for high school football on Friday night. Temps are
• 2:18
Speaker 2: going to be in the low 90s, Labor Day weekend,
• 2:21
Speaker 2: showers and storms, but we may see a break in
• 2:24
Speaker 2: the heat, highs in the upper 80s on Saturday, mid-80s

Speaker 2: introduce you to a gentleman by the name of Adam Phillips.
• 2:36
Speaker 2: He's been named the Director of Strategic Initiatives for We're
• 2:39
Speaker 2: in Vantage Valley. He's going to be doing this later
• 2:41
Speaker 2: this morning in the General Construction Studios. I want to
• 2:43
Speaker 2: welcome to the show now the executive director, the dude
• 2:45
Speaker 2: in charge of Festival. It's your good buddy, Zach Harreld.
• 2:48
Speaker 2: How you doing, man?
• 2:49
Speaker 1: Thanks for having me, Dave. I'm doing great, man.
• 2:51
Speaker 2: I got to give you your props. I knew that
• 2:54
Speaker 2: you were a musician, but I'd never actually heard you
• 2:56
Speaker 2: play or sing. I just happened to catch a clip online.
• 3:02
  Speaker 6: Really?
• 3:02
  Speaker 7: Yeah.
• 3:02
  Speaker 5: Uh-oh.
• 3:03
Speaker 2: It was on your Facebook page, I think.
• 3:05
  Speaker 7: Okay.
• 3:05
Speaker 1: Well, I guess I have no one to blame but me.
• 3:07
  Speaker 2: You're actually pretty good. I mean, I shouldn't be surprised.
• 3:11
  Speaker 2: I mean, you're a jack of all trades, do a
• 3:13
Speaker 2: lot of different things.
• 3:14
Speaker 1: A jack of all trades.
• 3:14
Speaker 2: A jack of all trades as you are. But you're
• 3:16
  Speaker 2: pretty good.
• 3:17
Speaker 8: I grew up playing. All my family on the Herald
• 3:22
Speaker 8: side are musicians. My grandfather was a Pentecostal preacher and
• 3:25
Speaker 8: a guitar picker and Passed it.
• 3:27
Speaker 1: Down to his kids.
• 3:28
Speaker 8: They had a family band that traveled all over West Virginia.
• 3:31
Speaker 2: Like the Partridge family.
• 3:32
Speaker 1: Sort of, except they only played in Pentecostal churches. Gotcha.
• 3:36
Speaker 8: No, they asked my grandfather one time if he handled snakes.
• 3:38
Speaker 8: He said, I sure do, with the end of a hoe.
• 3:41
Speaker 8: He's not that kind.
• 3:42
  Speaker 2: But, yeah.
• 3:44
Speaker 8: Grew up playing in church, and they gave me a
• 3:47
Speaker 8: mandolin when my hands were big enough to hold it,
• 3:49
Speaker 8: and that was my first instrument.
• 3:51
Speaker 1: Well, that's cool, man.
• 3:52
Speaker 2: I mean, that's really good stuff.
• 3:54
  Speaker 1: Thank you.
• 3:54
Speaker 2: You and I had, I think you mentioned it once before,
• 3:56
Speaker 2: but I never actually heard you, you know.
• 3:59
Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I appreciate that.
• 4:01
Speaker 2: What it was was I had to go to your
• 4:02
Speaker 2: Facebook page because when I was making my notes, doing
• 4:04
Speaker 2: everything for the online stuff, I wanted to make sure
• 4:06
Speaker 2: I had Festivale. Spelled correctly. That's what it was. I
• 4:09
Speaker 2: appreciate that, too. Well, making sure I had the capital
• 4:13
Speaker 2: letters where they're supposed to be.
• 4:16
Speaker 8: Got a little bluegrass band playing some original tunes, too.
• 4:20
Speaker 8: We call it Crawford and Ashby. It's named after the
• 4:23
Speaker 8: holding company that owned our hometown, Ashford, over in Boone County.
• 4:26
Speaker 8: I know Ashford very well. And we play around town
• 4:29
Speaker 8: a little bit. I'll holler at you next time we
• 4:31
  Speaker 8: got a gig.
• 4:32
  Speaker 9: All right.
• 4:32
Speaker 2: Sounds good. Just make it a matinee because I go
• 4:34
  Speaker 2: to bed at 8 o'clock.
• 4:35
Speaker 1: Deal. Can you do that? Deal.
• 4:37
  Speaker 10: All right.
• 4:37
Speaker 2: So let's talk about FestiFall.
• 4:39
  Speaker 1: Yes, sir.
• 4:40
Speaker 8: Coming September the 29th, really. We're calling that FestiFall Eve
• 4:45
Speaker 8: through October the 4th. We got six days of some
• 4:50
Speaker 8: really exciting events. I jokingly say I know that we've
• 4:55
Speaker 8: done a good job if I give people FOMO, fear
• 4:59
Speaker 8: of missing out. If we have so many things, you
• 5:03
Speaker 8: can't go to everything you want.
• 5:05
Speaker 1: That we've done a good job. All right.
• 5:07
Speaker 2: Let's go over what some of those things are.
• 5:09
Speaker 8: Well, so on Festive Fall Eve, September 29th, I'm really
• 5:13
Speaker 8: excited about this. Anne Magnuson, Hollywood actress.
• 5:17
  Speaker 2: World-renowned actress.
• 5:18
  Speaker 1: World-renowned.
• 5:20
Speaker 8: TV and film and everything else is doing a brand-new
• 5:23
Speaker 8: cabaret show at the Empty Glass over on the East End.
• 5:27
Speaker 8: And she already has plans to take this thing on
• 5:30
Speaker 8: the road. She's going to have it in L.A.
• 5:33
  Speaker 1: In January.
• 5:34
Speaker 2: That's the real L.A., not Logan area.
• 5:36
  Speaker 4: Right, right.
• 5:36
Speaker 1: Or Lower Ashford, as we call it.
• 5:39
Speaker 8: Los Angeles in January, eventually New York. But she wanted
• 5:43
Speaker 8: to debut it in Charleston, West Virginia, where so much
• 5:46
  Speaker 8: of her art is. So that's 7 to 9 p.m.
• 5:50
Speaker 8: On September the 29th, two shows. 7 to 9.30, I'm sorry.
• 5:54
Speaker 2: That's at the Empty Glass, right?
• 5:55
Speaker 1: At the Empty Glass.
• 5:56
Speaker 8: And you can get your tickets at festivefall.com for a
• 5:59
  Speaker 8: whopping $ 10 apiece.
• 6:01
  Speaker 1: That's a deal.
• 6:02
  Speaker 2: That's a deal.
• 6:02
Speaker 8: That's a way we like to do things. And then
• 6:04
Speaker 8: the next night, we have our Three Things Speaker Series,
• 6:06
Speaker 8: which you are very familiar with.
• 6:08
  Speaker 11: Mm-hmm.
• 6:08
Speaker 8: Uh, that's going to be a cool show. We've got, um,
• 6:10
Speaker 8: Callie Weston, local artist. We've got chef Mandy gum from
• 6:13
Speaker 8: Carver career Institute. Have you ever crossed paths with her?
• 6:15
  Speaker 2: I don't think so.
• 6:16
Speaker 1: Carver has an amazing culinary.
• 6:18
Speaker 2: Oh, they do. I know that for a fact, every.
• 6:20
Speaker 1: Restaurant in the Valley has benefited from that.
• 6:22
  Speaker 12: Yeah.
• 6:23
Speaker 8: Uh, Mandy's head of that and, and has such great
• 6:26
Speaker 8: stories to tell. And then Renee Margosi, who is the
• 6:29
Speaker 8: outgoing executive director of the West Virginia creative network, formerly
• 6:32
Speaker 8: the Tamarack foundation. She's going to be on there. Um,
• 6:36
  Speaker 8: That'll be a great show. That's Wednesday, September 30th at
• 6:39
Speaker 8: 7 p.m. at the Capital Market. Again, ticketsfestival.com. This next
• 6:46
Speaker 8: one is going to be, I think.
• 6:47
  Speaker 1: Really popular.
• 6:47
Speaker 8: Our inaugural festival podcast. FestiFall Popcorn Social.
• 6:52
  Speaker 2: Okay.
• 6:53
Speaker 8: We're doing that in collaboration with our friends at the
• 6:56
Speaker 8: West Virginia International Film Festival over at Goldenrod.
• 7:00
Speaker 1: On the west side.
• 7:00
Speaker 2: Have you been there? No, I have not.
• 7:02
Speaker 1: Fantastic little breakfast restaurant.
• 7:04
Speaker 2: Got to make it over there.
• 7:05
Speaker 1: Got a nice garden out back.
• 7:06
Speaker 8: That's where we're going to do a free screening of
• 7:09
Speaker 8: Practical Magic since, you know, it's going to be getting
• 7:11
Speaker 8: on Halloween time. We're going to have free snacks for everybody,
• 7:15
Speaker 8: some live music, some unique vendors, and then the Elk
• 7:18
Speaker 8: City Popcorn Company, which is next door.
• 7:20
  Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
• 7:20
Speaker 8: We'll also be selling some of their specialty popcorn. That's
• 7:23
Speaker 8: at 7 p.m. on October the 1st. And that one
• 7:26
Speaker 8: is free. October the 2nd, that Friday night, a lot
• 7:30
Speaker 8: of great stuff going on. We have an evening with
• 7:31
Speaker 8: the poets, which will feature West Virginia Poet Laureate Mark
• 7:34
Speaker 8: Harshman and his guest Jane Hicks at Taylor Books. That's
• 7:38
Speaker 8: a free event. But something I'm really jazzed for is
• 7:43
Speaker 8: this program we're doing that night at 7 p.m., Stories
• 7:46
Speaker 8: Between Worlds. This is at Poomsey's.com. awesome little all-ages venue
• 7:52
Speaker 8: on the west side um we have a musician named
• 7:55
Speaker 8: chenobe he's uh born in uganda he currently lives in
• 7:59
Speaker 8: ashville north carolina but he plays these traditional east african
• 8:03
Speaker 8: instruments um thumb pianos and ugandan harps and and don't
• 8:08
Speaker 8: get a lot of that in boom county not a
• 8:10
Speaker 8: whole lot of it i'm telling you what man like
• 8:13
Speaker 8: words kind of fail me to describe the music that
• 8:15
Speaker 8: this guy makes. The best thing you can do is
• 8:17
Speaker 8: look him up on, on YouTube. It's, he's one of
• 8:19
Speaker 8: the most phenomenal musicians I've ever heard in my life.
• 8:21
  Speaker 5: Okay.
• 8:22
Speaker 8: And he, he weaves that, uh, music, uh, the, the,
• 8:25
Speaker 8: the instrumentation and the singing together with storytelling and, and
• 8:29
Speaker 8: history of these things.
• 8:31
Speaker 1: I think it's going to be just magic.
• 8:33
Speaker 8: Um, and then September, uh, or I'm sorry, October the 3rd, uh,
• 8:39
Speaker 8: That weekend, Saturday, we're really getting kicked into high gear.
• 8:42
Speaker 8: We have the Harvest Art Fair, which is going to
• 8:44
Speaker 8: be over there at the Capital Market from 10 a.m.
• 8:46
  Speaker 1: To 6 p.m.
• 8:47
Speaker 8: We're going to have over 30 vendors selling their wares
• 8:49
Speaker 8: over there. We're going to have a full schedule of
• 8:52
Speaker 8: live music all day, completely free.
• 8:55
  Speaker 1: There's walking tours. There's yoga. There's a bike tour. We're
• 8:59
Speaker 1: doing a new program.
• 9:01
Speaker 8: Also that day called Dance Bus, our friend Sean from KRT,
• 9:05
Speaker 8: he said, let's do something. And I put him to
• 9:10
Speaker 8: the test. KRT has those art buses I'm sure you've
• 9:13
Speaker 8: seen driving around. That's a collaboration between Festival and the
• 9:17
Speaker 8: city's Office of Public Art where we get local artists
• 9:20
Speaker 8: to design a wrap for a bus.
• 9:24
Speaker 1: We're going to take one of those art buses.
• 9:25
Speaker 8: And we're going to load it full of dancers from
• 9:28
Speaker 8: the West Virginia Dance Company, the state's only professional touring
• 9:31
Speaker 8: dance company, and attendees. And they're going to go on
• 9:35
Speaker 8: a five-stop tour of public art installations around downtown. And
• 9:39
Speaker 8: at every one, everybody files off the bus. The dancers
• 9:42
Speaker 8: are going to perform a piece based on that art.
• 9:45
Speaker 1: And then back on the bus to the next stop.
• 9:47
Speaker 8: And then it's going to have its grand finale at
• 9:50
Speaker 8: City Center at Slack Plaza. just in time for the
• 9:53
Speaker 8: next thing that night City Center Dead John Ingram's tribute
• 9:56
Speaker 8: to the music of the Grateful Dead that's always a
• 10:00
Speaker 8: great party. This year he's going to have Jake Brownstein
• 10:04
Speaker 8: of the jam band Eggie and Jason Hahn of the
• 10:07
Speaker 8: String Cheese Incident, another great jam band. Not like household names,
• 10:12
Speaker 8: but in the jam band world, those are big deals.
• 10:15
Speaker 8: And that's another free event. 7 p.m. at City Center
• 10:19
Speaker 8: at Slack Plaza, City Center Dead. That's presented with our
• 10:22
Speaker 8: friends at Arts Amplified.
• 10:24
Speaker 2: I mean, I'm just looking over the schedule, and we
• 10:26
Speaker 2: can't possibly in 10 minutes go over everything that you
• 10:28
Speaker 2: have here. And we'll have you back as we get
• 10:31
  Speaker 2: a little bit closer. But, I mean, I know you've
• 10:32
Speaker 2: got a big show at Mountain Stage on October the 4th.
• 10:38
Speaker 2: At the Harvest Art Fair stage at Capital Market, you
• 10:41
Speaker 2: got the Rocky Horror Show preview. Now, what is that
• 10:45
Speaker 2: all about? Because we just lost Tim Curry last week.
• 10:50
Speaker 8: For folks that aren't familiar, there's a couple companies, actually,
• 10:53
Speaker 8: theater companies in town that are doing this now. There's
• 10:56
Speaker 8: grown this whole culture around Rocky Horror Picture Show where
• 11:00
Speaker 8: they screen the movie but then have what they call
• 11:03
Speaker 8: shadow cast. So they act out the movie while the
• 11:06
Speaker 8: movie is playing. And there's interactions between them and the audience.
• 11:10
Speaker 8: It's a whole genre of theater that has grown up
• 11:14
Speaker 8: around the Rocky Horror Picture Show. And the Alban Theater
• 11:17
Speaker 8: there in St. Albans is doing a Rocky Horror production
• 11:22
Speaker 8: in late October. And we invited them to come and
• 11:25
Speaker 8: do a preview of that show. at our stage at
• 11:28
Speaker 8: the Capital Market on October 3rd at 11.30 a.m., which
• 11:32
Speaker 8: is a little early for something like that.
• 11:34
Speaker 2: Or a little late.
• 11:36
Speaker 1: Or a little late. Yeah, that's true.
• 11:39
Speaker 2: Depends on what you did the night before. But I
• 11:41
Speaker 2: was looking at the people that you mentioned them, and again,
• 11:44
Speaker 2: I'm looking at– there's a gentleman on– On October the 4th,
• 11:48
Speaker 2: playing a new name, Andrew Adkins. I have worked shows,
• 11:52
Speaker 2: I say worked, as like emceed shows with Andrew Adkins
• 11:56
Speaker 2: in the past, man. I mean, the guy's incredible.
• 11:58
Speaker 1: He really, really is.
• 11:58
Speaker 8: Singer, songwriter, great voice, great guitar player. Excited to have him.
• 12:04
Speaker 8: That same day, we also have a musician, Bex. They're
• 12:08
  Speaker 8: a singer-songwriter from, I think, the Morgantown area. I found
• 12:12
Speaker 8: them on TikTok, and they're somebody else who's just burning
• 12:15
Speaker 8: up the West Virginia music scene with some great songs
• 12:19
Speaker 8: and vocals and guitar playing.
• 12:21
  Speaker 1: Fantastic.
• 12:21
Speaker 2: And here's the great thing about all of this stuff,
• 12:23
Speaker 2: or at least the overwhelming majority of it, it's free.
• 12:27
Speaker 2: It's free entertainment, and you can't. Again, just like with Festivall,
• 12:33
Speaker 2: you can't possibly– I mean, you can try to cover
• 12:36
Speaker 2: it all, but it's going to be really hard to
• 12:37
  Speaker 2: do it all.
• 12:38
  Speaker 1: That's the plan.
• 12:39
Speaker 8: If you feel disappointed that you didn't make it to
• 12:41
Speaker 8: something because you were at some other very cool event,
• 12:44
Speaker 8: we've done our jobs. Yeah, it's important for us to
• 12:47
Speaker 8: make these things accessible. It's in our mission statement. It's
• 12:50
  Speaker 8: in our name.
• 12:52
  Speaker 1: Festive All.
• 12:52
Speaker 8: We want to represent all the arts, and we want
• 12:54
Speaker 8: all the arts to be accessible to all the people.
• 12:57
Speaker 2: Give us the website. And again, we're still a few
• 13:00
Speaker 2: weeks away. It's actually going to start off on September
• 13:02
Speaker 2: the 29th, and it'll run through October the 4th. But
• 13:06
Speaker 2: where's the best place for people to take a look
• 13:07
Speaker 2: at the entire schedule?
• 13:07
Speaker 8: The best place to find it all is FestiveFall.com. F-E-S-T-I-V-Fall.com.
• 13:14
Speaker 8: It's a brand new website we launched, and it has
• 13:16
Speaker 8: our entire schedule listed. And all the information you need.
• 13:20
Speaker 8: You can also purchase your tickets there. And also, we're
• 13:23
Speaker 8: distributing these snazzy brochures all over town. So just about
• 13:27
Speaker 8: anywhere you go, you'll probably see them on the front counter.
• 13:29
Speaker 8: Will you please make sure that you leave some out
• 13:31
Speaker 8: front while I'm here?
• 13:32
Speaker 1: Absolutely. I've got a stack right here.
• 13:33
Speaker 2: Okay. We'll leave them out front with Antoine if you
• 13:34
  Speaker 2: don't care.
• 13:35
  Speaker 1: All right.
• 13:36
Speaker 2: Let's have you back on as we get a little
• 13:38
Speaker 2: bit closer. Maybe a couple days before.
• 13:39
  Speaker 7: Yes, sir.
• 13:40
Speaker 2: And if you've got access to any of these artists
• 13:42
Speaker 2: or artisans... They're taking part in this, Zach. Feel free
• 13:45
Speaker 2: to bring them in.
• 13:46
Speaker 1: Bring them by. That would be a great idea.
• 13:47
  Speaker 2: I love that.
• 13:48
  Speaker 7: Yeah.
• 13:48

• 14:10
Speaker 2: You guys are wonderful partners to work with. Somebody asked
• 14:12
Speaker 2: here about mini golf. Do we have a mini golf?
• 14:15
Speaker 1: Mini golf? Okay. So in the summer festival, there is
• 14:18
Speaker 1: the downtown open. Yes.
• 14:20
Speaker 8: Where all the different businesses downtown sponsor a hole, and
• 14:24
Speaker 8: then you can make your way around downtown.
• 14:26
  Speaker 10: Okay.
• 14:26
Speaker 1: That is during our summer festival. That wouldn't be for fall.
• 14:29
  Speaker 2: All right.
• 14:30
Speaker 1: So just wait until May of next year.
• 14:32
Speaker 2: All right. Zach Harrell, always a pleasure to have you

• 16:35
Speaker 2: going to be tonight. And they do that every Wednesday
• 16:38
Speaker 2: night at the pitch. So we'll have Daniel just run
• 16:40
Speaker 2: in the studio, talk about that a little bit later on.

• 16:51
Speaker 2: welcome him to the show now. Adam Phillips, he was
• 16:53
Speaker 2: named the Director of Strategic Initiatives for Advantage Valley. He
• 16:57
Speaker 2: joins us this morning. Good morning, sir. Welcome to the show.
• 17:01
  Speaker 9: Morning, Dave.
• 17:01
Speaker 2: Thanks for having us. Thank you for being here. Give
• 17:03
Speaker 2: us the bio on Adam Phillips.
• 17:05
  Speaker 7: Bio.
• 17:06
Speaker 14: Well, I've worked for about nine years for the Huntington
• 17:08
Speaker 14: Area Development Council before I took a new job here
• 17:11
Speaker 14: with Advantage Valley as director of strategic initiatives, as you said.
• 17:16
Speaker 14: Prior to that, I did a little bit of work
• 17:18
Speaker 14: in Ohio, but all in economic development. I've been in
• 17:21
Speaker 14: that career for about 10 years.
• 17:23
Speaker 2: So what exactly will you be doing in this role?
• 17:26
Speaker 2: We also have Marjorie Cook here, a good friend with us,
• 17:28
Speaker 2: who's the marketing communications. Is that your title? Yeah, you
• 17:31
Speaker 2: got it. If not, we just gave it to you
• 17:32
Speaker 2: that time. So what exactly, Adam, will you be doing
• 17:35
Speaker 2: in this new role?
• 17:36
Speaker 14: So at first, it'll be really focused on our expanding
• 17:39
Speaker 14: markets program. So I will be managing that program for
• 17:43
Speaker 14: the organization. So Advantage Valley, it is a nine-county economic
• 17:47
Speaker 14: development organization representing nine counties in Huntington and Charleston metros.
• 17:52
Speaker 14: So we work with a group of regional partners at
• 17:56
Speaker 14: the local level. And so my role will be coordinating
• 17:59
Speaker 14: with those organizations to extend the services of this program
• 18:03
Speaker 14: to businesses throughout the Advantage Valley region.
• 18:06
Speaker 2: And I'm glad that you pointed out that it is
• 18:08
Speaker 2: a nine-county region, because when we talk to Advantage Valley sometimes,
• 18:12
Speaker 2: and I'm guilty of this as well, we think Huntington,
• 18:14
Speaker 2: Putnam County, Cabell County, Putnam County, Kanawha County. There's nine
• 18:18
Speaker 2: counties involved. There is.
• 18:19
Speaker 14: We go all the way over to Wayne, Mason. Jackson
• 18:23
Speaker 14: County as well, Lincoln. I'm sure there's a couple others
• 18:28
Speaker 14: in there. But yes, it is the metro area, but
• 18:31
Speaker 14: it is nine counties that goes up the Ohio River
• 18:34
Speaker 14: as well. And so a lot of exciting projects in
• 18:37
  Speaker 14: the whole area.
• 18:38
Speaker 2: And I'll tell you, I am a big believer, and
• 18:39
Speaker 2: listeners have heard me say this before, I'm a big
• 18:41
Speaker 2: believer in the whole concept of getting these counties together.
• 18:45
Speaker 2: And again, not just the three you think about, the,
• 18:48
Speaker 2: you know, Kanawha, Putnam, and Campbell, but all the other
• 18:50
Speaker 2: counties as well, all collaborating together. together, because as Terrell
• 18:54
Speaker 2: Ellis and I have talked about on the show in
• 18:55
Speaker 2: the past, you know, economic prosperity, jobs, they don't stop
• 19:01
Speaker 2: at the border, you know. And so when you have
• 19:03
Speaker 2: these things going on, you are going to just because
• 19:05
Speaker 2: something is happening in Kanawha County doesn't mean it's not
• 19:09
Speaker 2: of interest to Putnam County and Cabell County and all
• 19:12
Speaker 2: the other counties as well. Absolutely.
• 19:14
Speaker 14: I think we've seen a number of projects that have
• 19:16
Speaker 14: impacts across political borders and When you have a new
• 19:20
Speaker 14: core-like investment that comes into the region, that's going to
• 19:23
Speaker 14: impact all of our counties, right, either from a workforce perspective,
• 19:27
Speaker 14: from a housing perspective. And those are issues that Advantage
• 19:32
Speaker 14: Valley is on the front line of.
• 19:34
Speaker 2: When you hit the ground running, have you officially started yet?
• 19:36
Speaker 2: I know the press releases went out yesterday. Are you
• 19:38
Speaker 2: used to day like day one?
• 19:39
Speaker 1: Yesterday was day one.
• 19:40
  Speaker 6: Okay.
• 19:40
  Speaker 12: All right.
• 19:41
Speaker 2: So we got you on day two.
• 19:42
  Speaker 1: That's all right.
• 19:42
Speaker 2: And you came back to the second day. So that's
• 19:44
Speaker 2: always a good sign. So what do you initially what
• 19:47
Speaker 2: are some of the projects that you really want to
• 19:49
Speaker 2: hit the ground running with?
• 19:51
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 19:51
Speaker 14: Like I said, our expanding markets program, that really is
• 19:54
Speaker 14: designed to deliver resources, technical assistance resources to companies throughout
• 19:59
Speaker 14: the Advantage Valley market. We work with our regional partner groups.
• 20:03
Speaker 14: So we actually support staff positions in those in five
• 20:08
Speaker 14: of our local economic development organizations that we work with,
• 20:11
Speaker 14: the folks in Mason County, in Jackson County, Putnam County,
• 20:15
Speaker 14: Charleston Area Alliance, and the Huntington Area Development Council, which
• 20:19
Speaker 14: actually covers Cabell and Wayne County. So coordinating with the
• 20:22
Speaker 14: staff there to really begin to create those outreach efforts
• 20:28
Speaker 14: to the business community to start to diagnose or to
• 20:31
Speaker 14: assess companies and their challenges that they're facing. We have
• 20:35
Speaker 14: a number of initiatives that we have really been a
• 20:39
Speaker 14: part of over the years. I should say that we
• 20:44
Speaker 14: have been doing this for a while. Really, with my
• 20:49
Speaker 14: previous role with Hagco, we worked with Advantage Valley on
• 20:53
Speaker 14: expanding markets, kind of version one and version two. And
• 20:56
Speaker 14: so we're kind of rolling out version three of this
• 20:58
Speaker 14: program this year. But as far as initiatives go, we
• 21:02
Speaker 14: are looking to support businesses and companies that want to
• 21:06
Speaker 14: expand their exports. that want to find localized supply chains
• 21:11
Speaker 14: that are maybe purchasing materials or supplies from external markets
• 21:16
Speaker 14: or from outside the United States. We are working on
• 21:20
Speaker 14: programs to help companies fill those gaps. And we also
• 21:24
Speaker 14: work on a lot of workforce development initiatives with our
• 21:27
Speaker 14: state partners. We help connect companies with finance and technical
• 21:32
Speaker 14: assistance grants. So there's a lot of avenues that we
• 21:35
  Speaker 14: can go down.
• 21:36
Speaker 2: Talking again with Adam Phillips. He's the new Director of
• 21:38
Speaker 2: Strategic Initiatives for Advantage Valley. Dave Allen Show on 580
• 21:41
Speaker 2: Live brought to you in part by Pinnacle Consultants, helping
• 21:44
Speaker 2: to identify environmental concerns like asbestos, lead, mold, and indoor
• 21:47
Speaker 2: quality issues in buildings all across the state, providing inspections, testing,
• 21:51
Speaker 2: and accredited lab services you can trust. Check out PinnacleCorp.net,
• 21:54
Speaker 2: helping you understand your environment because what you don't know happens.
• 21:57
Speaker 2: Can't hurt you. And of course, I don't know if
• 21:59
Speaker 2: this is something you'll be covered in, but anytime we
• 22:01
Speaker 2: have Cheryl Ellis on the show, she always talks about housing.
• 22:04
Speaker 2: Housing is the thing. You know, these housing, we're trying
• 22:07
Speaker 2: to get more housing in here because we have a
• 22:09
Speaker 2: shortage of houses in this whole area that we've talked about,
• 22:12
Speaker 2: quality homes that people can get involved with. And I'm
• 22:16
Speaker 2: sure you'll be a part of that, Marjorie. I know
• 22:18
Speaker 2: you're already involved in it.
• 22:20
Speaker 7: Yeah, I'll get the housing question. You're absolutely right, Dave.
• 22:24
Speaker 7: We have actually just had, last week, we brought in
• 22:27
Speaker 7: a national expert. His name is Patrick Bowen. On last Thursday,
• 22:31
Speaker 7: Patrick Bowen with Bowen National Research gave an hour-long webinar
• 22:36
Speaker 7: about our region. He has done an update on our
• 22:40
Speaker 7: 2023 housing needs assessment. He did a 2026 version, and
• 22:44
Speaker 7: he ran through the highlights, the takeaways. And we had
• 22:50
Speaker 7: over 100 people registered for that webinar. It is actually
• 22:52
Speaker 7: now on our website to be viewed. But the main
• 22:56
Speaker 7: takeaways were we have a gap, a housing gap of 29,000 houses.
• 23:03
Speaker 7: This takes into consideration the recent investments that have been
• 23:07
Speaker 7: announced for our region, upwards of, you know, something like 6,000
• 23:12
Speaker 7: direct jobs and 17 indirect jobs for about 22,000 And
• 23:18
Speaker 7: that's even more now with some of the data center
• 23:21
Speaker 7: jobs and announcements that have come online. But we have
• 23:24
Speaker 7: a crisis. We are not unique. It is happening across
• 23:28
Speaker 7: the country. But Advantage Valley right now is really trying
• 23:31
Speaker 7: to do site assessments. So if anyone knows good land
• 23:35
Speaker 7: and good possibilities for possible home sites, whether it be
• 23:39
Speaker 7: new development or redevelopment opportunities, we are actively working. In fact,
• 23:45
Speaker 7: Terrell Ellis has just The same day as the webinar,
• 23:48
Speaker 7: she held the first meeting of our housing task force,
• 23:53
Speaker 7: 16 community members. Nancy Bruns is leading that effort. So
• 23:58
Speaker 7: stay tuned. But looking at a multi-pronged approach, some might
• 24:02
Speaker 7: be legislative, some might be tax incentives, that sorts of
• 24:06
Speaker 7: things to try to break down the barriers to building.
• 24:08
Speaker 2: Help solve this problem. And bottom line is we got
• 24:10
  Speaker 2: to have housing.
• 24:11
Speaker 7: We got to have housing.
• 24:12
Speaker 2: We got to have that. And a texter says Marjorie
• 24:14
Speaker 2: and Adam are great advantage. Valley does such important work
• 24:16
Speaker 2: for economic development here in central West Virginia, the Bennington foundation,
• 24:20
Speaker 2: part of their funding for this initiative.
• 24:22
  Speaker 11: Very nice.
• 24:23
  Speaker 6: Yes.
• 24:24
Speaker 2: Thank you. We appreciate that. So your background and things
• 24:29
Speaker 2: that you've done before, how do you think that that
• 24:31
Speaker 2: is going to lend you and give you what you
• 24:33
Speaker 2: need to do this job now with all the things
• 24:35
Speaker 2: you've done in the past? Because, I mean, a lot
• 24:36
Speaker 2: of this is kind of the same circles kind of
• 24:38
  Speaker 2: a thing.
• 24:39
Speaker 14: Very much so. I think my background with the Huntington
• 24:42
Speaker 14: Area Development Council itself being a multi-county organization with Cabell
• 24:46
Speaker 14: and Wayne County, I think really prepares me for this role.
• 24:51
Speaker 2: It being kind of a regional collaboration.
• 24:52
Speaker 14: But, you know, in my previous role, I've had direct,
• 24:56
Speaker 14: you know, partnerships, relationships with organizations like the Putnam County
• 25:01
Speaker 14: Development Authority, like the Charleston Area Alliance. So I'm coming
• 25:05
Speaker 14: into this role very, not just familiar with the folks
• 25:09
Speaker 14: that work at these agencies and organizations, but having worked
• 25:12
Speaker 14: with them over a number of years. And so this
• 25:14
Speaker 14: really is a continuation of what we have previously built.
• 25:17
Speaker 2: I'm sure you're going to do great in the role.
• 25:19
Speaker 2: And so it's a Always a pleasure to have you
• 25:21
Speaker 2: on the show anytime that you need to come. These
• 25:23
Speaker 2: folks know I always have a microphone for them. So, Adam,
• 25:26
Speaker 2: best of luck to you in the new role. Adam
• 25:28
Speaker 2: is the director of strategic initiatives for Advantage Valley. Before
• 25:31
Speaker 2: we go, Marjorie, I want to give you an opportunity
• 25:34
Speaker 2: to explain about it. Talk about anything going on with
• 25:36
Speaker 2: Advantage Valley as we speak that we didn't touch today.
• 25:38
Speaker 7: All right. Well, we are just thrilled to have Adam,
• 25:40
Speaker 7: of course. He– just by way of information, I have
• 25:45
Speaker 7: worked with Adam for nine years because of– Because he
• 25:49
Speaker 7: was a valued partner at Hadco. So my relationship with
• 25:54
Speaker 7: him is just now he's in my building. So it's
• 25:58
Speaker 7: really tremendous and we feel really lucky to have his expertise.
• 26:01
Speaker 7: He's really smart and he's really good at what he does.
• 26:04
Speaker 7: So we're lucky to have him. So Advantage Valley has
• 26:06
Speaker 7: been super busy, not only as the housing work that
• 26:09
Speaker 7: we've done last week, we also kicked off an entrepreneurship program,
• 26:13
Speaker 7: the Taste of Appalachia. We did a program last year.
• 26:17
Speaker 7: Last year was our inaugural year, but it is an
• 26:20
Speaker 7: event where we highlight regional food vendors, often small cottage
• 26:25
Speaker 7: food producers, and we compile a series of gift boxes.
• 26:31
Speaker 7: This year, we're looking at six, maybe seven boxes. And
• 26:35
Speaker 7: so we've just kicked that off, and we have a
• 26:38
Speaker 7: huge showcase on October 18th from 1 to 4 at
• 26:42
Speaker 7: Capital Market. We will have the 17 vendors that are
• 26:45
Speaker 7: going to be in with their products are going to
• 26:48
Speaker 7: be in our boxes. We'll be there, and boxes will
• 26:51
Speaker 7: be for sale. And we will– it's a way to
• 26:54
Speaker 7: help lift up these vendors. One vendor, her name is
• 26:59
Speaker 7: Mary Smith and her husband– veteran-owned business. They run a
• 27:03
Speaker 7: barbecue sauce company called Tipsy Roos. The Taste of Appalachia
• 27:08
Speaker 7: boxes last year accounted for half of their sales annually.
• 27:13
Speaker 7: And they now have new friends and visitors to their
• 27:18
Speaker 7: site and to their product. So really excited about that.
• 27:21
Speaker 7: And then at the end of October, we have a
• 27:24
Speaker 7: fellow by the name of Ted Abernathy coming to Advantage Valley.
• 27:29
Speaker 7: He is a leading national economic developer, a consultant of sorts.
• 27:34
Speaker 7: Terrell Ellis heard him at a recent SEDC, Southern Economic
• 27:39
Speaker 7: Development Conference, Council Conference in Florida, and he is tremendous.
• 27:46
Speaker 7: And we're going to talk to him, have him talk
• 27:48
Speaker 7: to us, rather, about trends in the industry and what
• 27:51
Speaker 7: West Virginia might need to do to continue to build
• 27:55
Speaker 7: our economy and grow. So we're really excited about having
• 27:58
Speaker 7: Ted Abernathy with us at the end of October.
• 28:00
Speaker 2: There's always good things going on. Give us the website
• 28:03
Speaker 2: so people can follow along with what you guys are doing.
• 28:05
Speaker 7: AdvantageValley.com. And we serve really many different audiences. One is
• 28:12

• 31:52
Speaker 2: Construction Studio. How you doing, my friend?
• 31:53
Speaker 10: I'm doing just fine.
• 31:54
Speaker 2: How about you? I am doing well. All right, talk
• 31:56
Speaker 2: real quick about that week one because they got the
• 31:58
Speaker 2: win in week one.
• 31:59
  Speaker 6: Okay.
• 32:00
Speaker 10: 56-24 win against Chawan. A little bit of a slow start.
• 32:04
Speaker 10: Really turned it on. New starting quarterback, Brian Johnson. Got
• 32:07
Speaker 10: mixed in a little bit with Joe Daly, who's a
• 32:10
Speaker 10: young guy they really like. He ended up with five
• 32:13
Speaker 10: touchdowns and was the conference offensive player of the week.
• 32:15
Speaker 10: He didn't even start the game. So a lot of
• 32:17
Speaker 10: excitement coming out of the first week. A lot of
• 32:19
Speaker 10: really good feelings around the program. And you go to
• 32:21
  Speaker 10: Robert Morris.
• 32:22
  Speaker 1: That's right.
• 32:23
Speaker 10: Get a Division I opponent this week.
• 32:24
  Speaker 1: Go to Pittsburgh.
• 32:25
Speaker 10: Well, Moon Township, but the greater Pittsburgh Metroplex. for this
• 32:29
Speaker 10: one between West Virginia State and Robert Morris. They're coming
• 32:31
  Speaker 10: off of a season-opening win against Wagner. It's been a
• 32:33
Speaker 10: couple years since State has played a D1 opponent. We're
• 32:36
Speaker 10: excited to see what that looks like.
• 32:37
Speaker 2: All right, I wanted to have you stop by because
• 32:39
Speaker 2: every Wednesday night, this is something new we're doing this season.
• 32:41
Speaker 2: You're doing a coach's show live at one of my
• 32:43
Speaker 2: favorite places, The Pitch. So you'll be out there tonight
• 32:47
Speaker 2: with the coach and some special guests. That's right. I'll
• 32:50
  Speaker 2: be out there.
• 32:50
Speaker 10: It's the John Pennington Show every Wednesday night of game
• 32:54
Speaker 10: week during the season at West Virginia State. So that
• 32:56
Speaker 10: is this week. We're off next week, and then we
• 32:59
Speaker 10: go nine straight weeks to finish the season. Every Wednesday night,
• 33:02
Speaker 10: 7 to 8, live at the pitch at Shawnee. It
• 33:05
Speaker 10: is Wing Wednesday, so it is dollar wings, traditional and boneless,
• 33:08
Speaker 10: as well as dollar off all draft beer until close.
• 33:12
Speaker 10: So come out, enjoy some wings, hang out with us.
• 33:15
Speaker 10: Listen to the show. And like you said, got a
• 33:17
Speaker 10: special guest this week. We'll have special guests as the
• 33:19
Speaker 10: season goes on. And this week we're going to have
• 33:22
Speaker 10: Joe Daly, who I talked about there, was the conference
• 33:24
Speaker 10: offensive player of the week this week after his performance
• 33:27
Speaker 10: against Shawan. Threw three touchdowns, ran for two more, and
• 33:31
Speaker 10: we're excited to have him on the show.
• 33:32
Speaker 2: All right. And, again, you do this every Wednesday night
• 33:35
Speaker 2: at 7 o'clock during the season. You will take off
• 33:37
Speaker 2: next week because they're off next week. They're the bye week.
• 33:41
Speaker 2: So it's a great atmosphere. And if you've never been
• 33:43
Speaker 2: to the pitch, as I said, it's one of my
• 33:45
Speaker 2: favorite places. You've got plenty of room, plenty of parking.
• 33:48
Speaker 2: And you've got that pitch dust, they call it. Is
• 33:52
Speaker 2: that right? I found that that stuff goes on everything, man.
• 33:55
Speaker 2: I mean, you can get it on wings. You can
• 33:57
Speaker 2: put it on French fries. You can put it in coffee.
• 34:01
Speaker 2: I don't know. You can do whatever you want.
• 34:02
Speaker 10: Deep fry a table leg and roll it in that stuff,
• 34:04
Speaker 10: and I'd probably eat it.
• 34:05
Speaker 1: It is good. It's really good stuff. It's great stuff.
• 34:07
Speaker 10: It is great stuff, and we're excited. If you're a
• 34:11
Speaker 10: season ticket holder that goes to every game or you
• 34:14
Speaker 10: don't care about football and you just want to come
• 34:15
Speaker 10: out for Dollar Wings, we're going to be there.
• 34:17
Speaker 2: We're going to be bringing you.
• 34:18
Speaker 1: A good time, and we're excited for it.
• 34:19
Speaker 2: All right, Daniel. I appreciate you briefly stopping in this morning, man.
• 34:22
Speaker 2: Thanks a lot. Thank you. And again, Showtime tonight, John
• 34:24
Speaker 2: Pennington's show on 107.3 The Beat. And again, they'll start
• 34:27
Speaker 2: things about 7 o'clock tonight. Appreciate you, buddy. Thanks a lot.
• 34:30
Speaker 2: You can leave now. Okay. Or you can hang out.
• 34:33
  Speaker 9: Kick me out.
• 34:34
Speaker 2: You want to hang out? I don't care. We can
• 34:36
Speaker 2: tell Jenkins that you were working hard down here.
• 34:39
  Speaker 1: If you want.
• 34:39
Speaker 2: Now, he's listening, so you better go back upstairs.
• 34:41
  Speaker 7: That's a good point.
• 34:41
Speaker 1: I need to get moving.
• 34:42
Speaker 2: All right. Daniel Woods, Metro News, News and Sports. And again,
• 34:45
Speaker 2: the coaches show for West Virginia State. Do that every
• 34:48
Speaker 2: Wednesday night, but not next week because they have a
• 34:50
Speaker 2: bye week next week. But tonight, 7 o'clock at the
• 34:52
Speaker 2: pitch located next to West Virginia State. So come on
• 34:55
Speaker 2: in there. Enjoy dollar wing night. and more. Great food there, too,
• 34:59
Speaker 2: and just a great atmosphere there at the pitch. 943,
• 35:02
Speaker 2: I invite you to join me every Friday morning, 906,
• 35:04
Speaker 2: for the Adopt Me Please Pet of the Week from
• 35:05
Speaker 2: the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association, brought to you by Almost 7 Interiors, family-owned,
• 35:10
Speaker 2: proudly serving the community for over 50 years. They specialize
• 35:12
Speaker 2: in custom blinds, shades, shutters, upholstery, and beautifully crafted sewn goods,
• 35:17
Speaker 2: homes to hospitals, classrooms to commercial spaces. They do it all.
• 35:20
Speaker 2: They're located at 516 D Street in South Charleston. And
• 35:23
Speaker 2: speaking of the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association, I did not have
• 35:26
Speaker 2: an opportunity to to mention this earlier this week. We
• 35:29
Speaker 2: did kegs for canines this past Saturday afternoon at the
• 35:34
Speaker 2: Red Carpet Lounge over on Elizabeth Street. Had a great,
• 35:37
Speaker 2: great turnout there. And the important thing is we raised
• 35:40
Speaker 2: a lot of money for the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association, but
• 35:43
Speaker 2: also we were able to get some pets hooked up
• 35:47
Speaker 2: with some... Pet parents, some adoptions went on over there.
• 35:51
Speaker 2: So that is really, really cool. That's what we like
• 35:53
Speaker 2: to see. We love doing that event. I was there.
• 35:56
Speaker 2: Steve Animal, 98.7 The Mountain was there. Logan Scott from V100.
• 36:00
Speaker 2: So just a great, great time. And I want to
• 36:02
Speaker 2: say thank you to everybody that stopped by to say
• 36:03
Speaker 2: hello to us. And people actually got to see, you know,
• 36:06
Speaker 2: Angie Gillenwater from the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association is my co-host.
• 36:10
Speaker 2: for the Adopt Me, Please Pet of the Week segment
• 36:12
Speaker 2: every Friday. So people actually get to see Angie and
• 36:16
Speaker 2: talk to her. And she's a big-time star, you know,
• 36:19
Speaker 2: thanks to me. But anyway, thanks to everybody that came
• 36:22
Speaker 2: out for Kegs for Canines this past week, this past
• 36:25
Speaker 2: Saturday over at the Red Carpet Lounge. Coming up later today,
• 36:29
Speaker 2: Metro News Midday 13 News. And tonight, live anchorman of
• 36:31
Speaker 2: Aaron and me, powered by Salango Law. It is Wednesday,
• 36:34
Speaker 2: which means we're going to introduce you to another wonderful
• 36:36
Speaker 2: West Virginian. Today is opening day of the business summit
• 36:40
Speaker 2: at the Greenbrier. Now, T.J. Meadows and Dave Wilson are
• 36:44
Speaker 2: doing talk live from there both today and tomorrow. We'll
• 36:47
Speaker 2: check in with them during the 12 o'clock hour. Jeff
• 36:49
Speaker 2: Jenkins will have the news. Our trucking expert, Shannon Everett,
• 36:53
Speaker 2: is going to stop by to talk about some issues
• 36:55
Speaker 2: with trucking in America. Good buddy Emmett Pepper from Energy
• 36:58
Speaker 2: Efficient West Virginia will stop by. It is week two
• 37:01
Speaker 2: of the Metro News High School Sportsline program that will
• 37:03
Speaker 2: air tonight. Fred Persinger will join us with a preview
• 37:07
Speaker 2: of that and, of course, Open Line West Virginia. Metro
• 37:09
Speaker 2: News Midday with 13 News and Tonight Live Anchor Amanda
• 37:12
Speaker 2: Barrett and me, powered by Selangor Law, coming up at
• 37:15
Speaker 2: noon today. On this show tomorrow, as it's been well documented,
• 37:19
Speaker 2: we are getting a new county commissioner in Kanawha County
• 37:22
Speaker 2: to complete the term of Lance Wheeler, who resigned to
• 37:24
Speaker 2: become director of the Ambulance Authority. The new commissioner, Austin Gessel, is,
• 37:29
Speaker 2: I think, last I heard, going to be sworn in tomorrow.
• 37:33
Speaker 2: And he will be completing the term of Lance Wheeler.
• 37:35
Speaker 2: He will not be on your ballot come November. I
• 37:38
Speaker 2: hate to use the term, you know, spot holder, placeholder, whatever,
• 37:42
Speaker 2: because he's going to do a great job in that role.
• 37:44
Speaker 2: But he's not running for it permanently. All right. He's
• 37:47
Speaker 2: just completing the term of Lance Wheeler. So Austin Gessel
• 37:51
Speaker 2: is due to be sworn in as a new county commissioner.
• 37:53
Speaker 2: He'll join me. Coming up on the show tomorrow. Also,
• 37:56
Speaker 2: our good friend Joe Stevens from the city of Nitro
• 38:00
Speaker 2: is going to be on the show tomorrow. Pretty cool stuff.
• 38:03
Speaker 2: And I think this is the fourth year they've done this.
• 38:06
Speaker 2: The cities of Nitro. and St. Albans, rivals for the
• 38:10
Speaker 2: most part, at least on the football field and the
• 38:12
Speaker 2: basketball courts and so on and so forth. They are
• 38:16
Speaker 2: teaming up for their annual Labor Day weekend fireworks show.
• 38:20
Speaker 2: It's Sunday night around 930. Now, what they do is
• 38:22
Speaker 2: they close the Dick Henderson Bridge starting at 830 that
• 38:25
Speaker 2: night so people can actually walk out onto the bridge
• 38:28
Speaker 2: and to take it all in, and then the fireworks
• 38:31
Speaker 2: will be set off from the St. Albans boat ramp.
• 38:33
Speaker 2: So we'll get into all that with Joe coming up
• 38:35
Speaker 2: on the show tomorrow. And we talked a little about football.
• 38:38
Speaker 2: I am excited about football being back. You know that.
• 38:42
Speaker 2: Marshall and WVU both back in action to open their
• 38:44
Speaker 2: seasons on Saturday. WVU at home against Coastal Carolina saluting
• 38:49

• 38:53
Speaker 2: set to travel to Penn State, heading up to Happy Valley.
• 38:56
Speaker 2: MEC action as well, as we mentioned earlier, with Daniel
• 38:59
Speaker 2: West Virginia State traveling to Robert Morris on Saturday. That
• 39:02

Speaker 2: This was kind of a surprise to me. Just got
• 42:39
Speaker 2: a press release here from the Charleston Police Department that
• 42:42
Speaker 2: Tony Haislin is going to be retiring after nearly 27
• 42:45
Speaker 2: years of service. But the police department says in the statement,
• 42:48
Speaker 2: I will officially retire on Friday. That's this Friday. And
• 42:52
Speaker 2: we'll have a news story on that a little bit
• 42:53
Speaker 2: later on. I cannot remember a time. Tony Hazlund wasn't
• 42:57
Speaker 2: part of the Charleston Police Department. Well, I guess it's
• 43:00
Speaker 2: been 27 years. And so he is going he's announced
• 43:03
Speaker 2: his retirement on September the 4th. I can tell you.
• 43:07
  Speaker 2: And I don't do a whole lot of news. I
• 43:09
Speaker 2: leave that up to the news professionals. But from time
• 43:12
Speaker 2: to time, we've had Tony on this show or on Midday,
• 43:15
Speaker 2: and certainly the folks in the media depend on him
• 43:18
Speaker 2: to help us out when we need information, whatever. He's
• 43:20
Speaker 2: just done a fantastic job. So a big shout-out to him.
• 43:23
Speaker 2: Hope he enjoys his retirement. We'll try to get him
• 43:25
Speaker 2: on the show. at some point, maybe give us some
• 43:28
Speaker 2: of the highlights of his time in office. But again,
• 43:30
Speaker 2: that press release just going out that after 27 years
• 43:33
Speaker 2: with the Charleston Police Department, Tony Haislin has announced that
• 43:36
Speaker 2: he is going to retire effective this Friday. And Sergeant Bales,
• 43:43
Speaker 2: Travis Bales, has been on the show also numerous times
• 43:46
Speaker 2: as well. He is going to be serving as the
• 43:48
Speaker 2: new public relations officer. So his office, it says, will
• 43:51
Speaker 2: be located in City Hall. So we'll try to get
• 43:53
Speaker 2: to both of them on the show at a at
• 43:57
Speaker 2: a time in the very near future. So I don't
• 43:59
Speaker 2: know if you heard this or not, but yesterday State
• 44:01
Speaker 2: Treasurer Larry Pack was on TalkLine with Wilson Meadows yesterday
• 44:05
Speaker 2: talking about this new report that he and some others
• 44:08
Speaker 2: put together that he says will help the public, lawmakers, etc.,
• 44:13
Speaker 2: better understand how the taxes from data centers are going
• 44:17
Speaker 2: to work. Now, he focused on two of these centers,
• 44:19
Speaker 2: one in Berkeley County, the other in Putnam County, the
• 44:22
Speaker 2: Google project there. And for our purposes, being a Charleston-based show,
• 44:26
Speaker 2: we'll focus on just that one right now, the Google
• 44:28
Speaker 2: project in Buffalo. That Putnam County project is valued at
• 44:32
  Speaker 2: around $ 7 billion, that's billion with a B, dollars. And
• 44:36
Speaker 2: Secretary Pack says the Putnam Google project would provide around $ 8. 5
• 44:40
Speaker 2: million a year for the Putnam County Commission. And the
• 44:46
Speaker 2: Board of Education says We'll get about $ 17. 4 million per year. Now,
• 44:51
Speaker 2: let's rack them up and shoot them again on that. Again,
• 44:54
Speaker 2: according to this report, this Google data center in Putnam
• 44:58
  Speaker 2: County in Buffalo, $ 8. 5 million for the county commission and $ 17. 4
• 45:05
Speaker 2: million for the Putnam County Board of Education. And I
• 45:09
Speaker 2: did think it was interesting that Larry Pack, being the
• 45:13
Speaker 2: all-around nice guy that Larry Pack is, was quick to
• 45:17
Speaker 2: point out Some things that maybe other proponents of data
• 45:20
Speaker 2: centers haven't always been as good about pointing out. I'll
• 45:25
Speaker 2: give you a little quote here. And by the way,
• 45:29
Speaker 2: we have a much bigger story on this project as
• 45:31
Speaker 2: well as the Berkeley County project available at WVMetroNews.com. But
• 45:34
Speaker 2: Larry Pack said during the interview with TJ and Dave yesterday, Quote,
• 45:40
Speaker 2: you just got to remember there is some disruption to
• 45:44
Speaker 2: people's lives. We've got to give them grace and understanding.
• 45:48
Speaker 2: If they bought their piece of paradise and all of
• 45:50
Speaker 2: a sudden you have a million square foot building next
• 45:53
Speaker 2: door that's having an impact on them. End quote. So, again,
• 45:57
Speaker 2: I give Larry Pack credit for that because that's a
• 46:01
Speaker 2: lot of the proponents of the data centers. And I
• 46:04
Speaker 2: am a proponent have just said basically build, baby, build.
• 46:08
  Speaker 5: Okay.
• 46:08
Speaker 2: Larry Pack, being Larry Pack, felt the need to put
• 46:11
Speaker 2: that in there as well, and hats off to him
• 46:13
Speaker 2: on that. Treasurer Pack released the info yesterday, and the
• 46:17
Speaker 2: overall analysis was done by former Deputy Revenue Secretary Mark Mukau.
• 46:22
Speaker 2: And you can read it for yourself at wvmetronews.com. And
• 46:27
Speaker 2: I'm sorry, I'm speaking now as a Putnam Countian who, granted,
• 46:31
Speaker 2: does not live in the Buffalo area where this thing
• 46:33
Speaker 2: is being proposed. And I fully trust Secretary Pack on this,
• 46:40
Speaker 2: not because he's the state treasurer, not because of that,
• 46:43
Speaker 2: but because of his previous success in the business world.
• 46:45
Speaker 2: The guy has been a big time job creator over
• 46:49
Speaker 2: the years. And if there's anything that Larry Pack knows,
• 46:52
Speaker 2: it's business. And so they tell me it's a good
• 46:56
Speaker 2: deal from an economic standpoint. And you talk about that
• 46:59
Speaker 2: much money going to the Putnam County Commission and also
• 47:01
Speaker 2: to the Putnam County school system, to the tune of
• 47:03
Speaker 2: the school system, 17.4 million dollars.
• 47:04
  Speaker 6: I am.
• 47:08
Speaker 2: I'm all for it. The Dave Allen Show on 580

Speaker 2: Live brought to you in part by the Charleston Dirty Birds.
• 47:12
Speaker 2: The birds are on the road this week at Lexington,
• 47:15
Speaker 2: and they're at High Point after that.
• 47:16
  Speaker 1: They are back.
• 47:17
Speaker 2: At GoMart Ballpark, September 11th. Check out DirtyBirdsBaseball.com. Going back
• 47:21
Speaker 2: to yesterday's show, somebody took an issue with me, and
• 47:24
Speaker 2: that's okay, because they referred to Shelley Moore Capital as
• 47:27
Speaker 2: being feckless, and I left that out. They had a
• 47:29
Speaker 2: problem with that. And I understand what they're saying. They
• 47:33
Speaker 2: texted back and said, calling someone ineffective when they are
• 47:37
Speaker 2: ineffective is not name-calling. Calling Shelley ugly or dumb is name-calling,
• 47:40
Speaker 2: which the texter did not do. Calling Shelley feckless is
• 47:44
Speaker 2: just what happens when when West Virginia has not become
• 47:47
Speaker 2: better in her tenure as a federal delegate. OK, fair point.
• 47:51
Speaker 2: Fair point. Text says Pete Hegseth sure is destroying the
• 47:54
Speaker 2: command structure of the military. This is called winning, you
• 47:57
Speaker 2: liberal losers. Text, farmers in our country are under attack
• 48:04
Speaker 2: by right wing Republicans. We need to stand with our farmers. Text, Dave,
• 48:10
Speaker 2: it's great to see and hear WVRC media covering West
• 48:12
Speaker 2: Virginia State University football program and games. During my first
• 48:15
Speaker 2: year of college there in 2011, the only coverage football
• 48:18
Speaker 2: games got was through the ragtag campus radio station ran
• 48:21
Speaker 2: by a handful of audiovisual students, myself included. The signal
• 48:25
Speaker 2: reached to maybe Dunbar, and we had about 16 listeners.
• 48:27
Speaker 2: In 2011, it was especially tough to cover the games
• 48:31
Speaker 2: as the team lost every single game that year. So
• 48:33
Speaker 2: here is to moving up. So speaking of money, as
• 48:40
Speaker 2: I was earlier, Stephen, I appreciate that text, by the way.
• 48:42
Speaker 2: Very nice text. Stephen Allen Adams of Ogden Newspapers out
• 48:47
Speaker 2: with some interesting reporting over the last couple of days
• 48:50
Speaker 2: about the America 250 celebration at the Capitol in and
• 48:53
Speaker 2: around the 4th of July. He's got the numbers and
• 48:57
Speaker 2: the invoices and the governor's office had set aside about
• 49:01
Speaker 2: two million dollars. To cover everything as best I understand
• 49:05
Speaker 2: it and to keep the attractions free to the public. Well,
• 49:11
Speaker 2: that's good, but there's no such thing as free and
• 49:13
Speaker 2: somebody had to pay for it. And that would be us.
• 49:17
Speaker 2: They spent two hundred sixteen thousand dollars. to Stevens reporting
• 49:21
Speaker 2: the invoices. They spent $ 216, 000 just for the audio and video,
• 49:27
Speaker 2: if that gives you any idea of how expensive this
• 49:30
Speaker 2: thing was. Now, as somebody who has been part of
• 49:33
Speaker 2: promoting events in the past, I understand that. how important
• 49:37
Speaker 2: and how expensive good audiovisual can be. I get that.
• 49:41
Speaker 2: That's a chunk of change. And they set aside, the
• 49:45
Speaker 2: governor did about $ 2 million for the entire thing. Now,
• 49:47
Speaker 2: according to Stephen, about $ 2. 2 has already been paid out
• 49:51
Speaker 2: either for what went on at the Capitol for the
• 49:53
Speaker 2: state's booth or also at the Great American State Fair
• 49:56
Speaker 2: or the National Mall in D.C. That giant Ferris wheel
• 49:59
Speaker 2: that seemed to be garnering a lot of attention looks
• 50:02
  Speaker 2: like about $ 350, 000 today. And the group Alabama, $ 300, 000. $ 72, 000
• 50:09
Speaker 2: for all the pyro. $ 56, 000 for the symphony. Marshall Tucker band,
• 50:18
  Speaker 2: a mere $ 50, 000, etc., etc. You can read Stephen's story
• 50:22
Speaker 2: about it at his various sites. It's got a link
• 50:26
Speaker 2: to all of his social media, Ogden newspapers, Wheeling Intelligencer,
• 50:29
Speaker 2: a bunch of other papers as well. Not hard to
• 50:31
Speaker 2: find at all. And all that. with a bigger party

Speaker 2: News must have their retirement accounts invested in tech companies
• 50:49
Speaker 2: and data centers. Well, you know, we don't discuss how
• 50:53
Speaker 2: we invest our retirement. What is a retirement anyway? I
• 50:56
Speaker 2: have absolutely no intentions of ever, ever retiring. I'll just
• 51:00
Speaker 2: drop dead on the mic, or Ryan will just cut
• 51:02
Speaker 2: the mic, one of the two. Quickly, students and staff

Speaker 2: at GW got the day off today because of HVAC issues.

Speaker 2: able to get that fixed and get them young'uns. back

Speaker 2: to school. Tomorrow, hopefully get them back tomorrow, I should say. Quickly,
