Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: He's a water addict. If I don't drink water, I
- 0:02will die. I am addicted to it.
- 0:07Speaker 2: If I don't.
- 0:08Speaker 1: If I don't drink water for long enough, I start
- 0:09like shaking and feeling like cravings to need water, and
- 0:13it's just like my mouth gets dry and I'm just
- 0:14like I need water and it becomes the whole focus.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Of my life. Water is an adiction.
- 0:19Speaker 3: Sounds like an addiction. You should have talked to somebody.
- 0:22Speaker 1: All right, Hello, and welcome back to the Spire podcast, Satad.
- 0:36Speaker 2: We don't have Fulton with us.
- 0:38Speaker 1: A big storm came through and he works for a
- 0:39roofing company, so he's really busy right now fixing people's roofs.
- 0:43We have a guest with us today, Liz Buckles, and
- 0:45we're really excited to have her here to talk about
- 0:48how to be real with each other, which is our
- 0:50topic for today, like how do we be real? As
- 0:53I say it, it was good, epidemic, because how is
- 0:57your day?
- 0:58Speaker 2: It was good?
- 1:00Speaker 1: But just to actually start off with this, so there's
- 1:03something we do, uh during Lent as in our Aspire stuff.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Remember do you know what the Aspire ACADYM stands for?
- 1:11You're probably not, probably not try to get.
- 1:17Speaker 4: Spiritual correct renewal.
- 1:19Speaker 2: It's spire.
- 1:24Speaker 5: He would be what prayer, That's a good one, but
- 1:30that's not physical, physical, intellectual.
- 1:37Speaker 2: How to think about that one?
- 1:41Speaker 4: Relational and experiential.
- 1:46Speaker 2: The big eie existential, evangelical.
- 1:54Speaker 1: So something we've been doing during Lent, and at the
- 1:57beginning of each episode we talk about what we did
- 2:01one day this.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Week in each of those categories.
- 2:04Speaker 1: So Michael, I hope you remembered, because your phone is
- 2:07over there being recording. It was my spring break last week,
- 2:11so it was really bad on the seeing people front,
- 2:14and thus a number of days I'm.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Just like, I don't nothing. Let's see like that was
- 2:25that's weeks ago. I need to go this week. Let's do.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Last Tuesday, I went to Mass and said Rosie with
- 2:36the old ladies. I love saying rose was the old
- 2:38ladies so classic. I actually think I had a good
- 2:42time talking with them afterwards on this day, or maybe
- 2:44that was a different time. But then for my physical
- 2:48I went muniing, which is mountain unicycling, and I went
- 2:53running at Castlewood.
- 2:54Speaker 2: It's my spring break.
- 2:54Speaker 1: I could just do what I wanted. For my intellectual,
- 2:58I did spend about forty minutes reading a paper for
- 3:01research purposes. Still don't understand it, but it hurt my brain.
- 3:07From my relational I'm just going to say, existing in
- 3:10nature and then trying to form a relation with self.
- 3:12That makes no sense, but that's what I wrote down.
- 3:15That's my relational relating to nature, I guess. And then
- 3:21my e was sharing joy of unicycle.
- 3:25Speaker 2: I think I think this was no. Oh, that was
- 3:28when I posted the video today.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Oh wait, what day was this?
- 3:31Speaker 2: Last Tuesday? So that was what today Today's Monday.
- 3:35Speaker 3: You got me thinking and I commented on it, and
- 3:38so I was like, yeah, that.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Counts, So that does count as evangelical. I completely forgot.
- 3:42I was just writing my innicycle and it's like, you know,
- 3:44I've been really wanting to talk about the concept of freedom.
- 3:47So then I just recorded ten minutes of me talking
- 3:49about what freedom actually is. Well, my inicycle was fun,
- 3:52I posted on on my YouTube channel.
- 3:54Speaker 2: So that was my aspire for this last week. Michael,
- 3:58what about you?
- 3:59Speaker 5: So so my phone's over there. I'm gonna try and
- 4:03just I'm not gonna try. I'm gonna say today because
- 4:07it's the easiest one from you to remember spiritual we're
- 4:11doing my family is doing this like nine month Novena
- 4:15two or Lady of Guadalupe.
- 4:17Speaker 3: It's I can't. I think it was Cardinal Cardinal Cardinal
- 4:21Burk thing.
- 4:21Speaker 5: So that and then I am planning on saying the
- 4:26Rosary either on the way to volleyball later or on
- 4:28the way home, so that will be my spiritual physical
- 4:32I'm gonna play volleyball. Intellectual I was listening to a
- 4:37podcast Alex O'Connor and William Lane craig. Doesn't matter if
- 4:42you know who they are. I don't know if you do.
- 4:44They were talking about just some old Testament stuff.
- 4:51Speaker 3: What was that? That was intellectual? Relational?
- 4:55Speaker 5: I on my break at school today, I was hanging
- 4:58out with Dominic and Seth for a while and then evangelical.
- 5:02Speaker 3: I'm doing this.
- 5:03Speaker 2: It doesn't all right, Sophie, my cop.
- 5:07Speaker 1: We're not going to make you do everything, because that's
- 5:09way too mean for a guest to relate. So what
- 5:13if you what do you do in your daily life?
- 5:15But it's just think back sometime during this last week
- 5:18one of those topics, maybe something we said stuck out
- 5:20to you, is like, is this something you did this
- 5:21week that's just like that was what I did to
- 5:24be physical or to uh strengthen my intellect or my
- 5:29relationship with someone. Is this something in particular this week?
- 5:32Just like this is what stuck out to me and
- 5:35that you'd like.
- 5:35Speaker 2: To share with the world.
- 5:36Speaker 4: Sure, I would say, there's two things that stuck out
- 5:41to me. One I went to a Bible study with
- 5:45Father Clark Philip or Father Philip Clark, I forget.
- 5:50Speaker 3: But one of those two.
- 5:52Speaker 4: Yes, I think it's Father Philip Clark. Nope, that sounds
- 5:55work whatever. He's a preset Saint Alban Rowe. And I
- 6:00went with a couple of my friends one week, and
- 6:03then this past week I took my dad and it
- 6:06was just really neat to hear all about the Old Testament,
- 6:09New Testament, how everything all flows together. Yeah, just beautiful.
- 6:16And then another thing I did was at work. One
- 6:21of my coworkers is Catholic, and a lot of times,
- 6:23like if we're eating lunch, we'll just like, I don't know,
- 6:28like you just pray by yourself or and then like
- 6:31you just assume nobody else is going to like pray
- 6:32with you or anything. But this week I was like,
- 6:35you know what I should ask him to pray with me.
- 6:37So it was nice to just at lunch to be like, hey,
- 6:40do you want to pray with me before we eat?
- 6:41And he was like, yeah, I would love to. So
- 6:44that was just super neat.
- 6:45Speaker 1: That was really cool and really evangelical too, not just
- 6:49to your friend but driven around you. We pray because
- 6:53we were thankful for a few That's that's cool. Before
- 6:56we get into our topic this, would you just want
- 6:59to tell us just a little bit about yourself, Like
- 7:01who are you?
- 7:02Speaker 2: What do you do?
- 7:03Speaker 4: I'm a daughter of God? That honestly though, that is
- 7:08something like I've really been growing in over the past
- 7:10couple months. So it's wild that, like, yeah, I'm a
- 7:13credible Catholic, but at the same time, like parts of
- 7:17my faith I think have been a lot more intellectual
- 7:20through most of my life. Obviously there's relational elements with
- 7:23that as well, but yeah, something I've been diving into
- 7:26more deeply is just my identity as daughter. So yeah,
- 7:30that's been really good. What do I do on a
- 7:33daily basis, I'm an accountant, so this is my busy
- 7:36time of year.
- 7:38Speaker 3: I'm sorry, I hate accounting.
- 7:40Speaker 2: We spread your news As an accountant.
- 7:43Speaker 5: I talked to my cousins the other day about this.
- 7:45It's like, accounting is probably my least favorite thing in
- 7:48the entire world. Sorry, it's awesome. It's awesome that you
- 7:53like it. I just don't see.
- 7:55Speaker 4: That's fair because there's other things, like I can never
- 7:58do anything medical, like it just grosses me. So I
- 8:00appreciate other people who can. And I know most people,
- 8:03I honestly don't understand how some of my friends are accountants.
- 8:06So I'm like, I get like I'm weird, like that's
- 8:08why I like it, but like they're so cool and normal.
- 8:11I'm like, why are you an accountant? There's so many
- 8:13cooler things to do. So, yeah, I don't do it either.
- 8:17Speaker 3: I guess.
- 8:18Speaker 4: Another thing is I met Nick.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Through college Truman State. Yes, Newman Center great if you're
- 8:25considering going to college Truman State, Missouri.
- 8:27Speaker 2: It's cheap and it's got a good Newman Center.
- 8:31Speaker 4: Yes, it's good value.
- 8:33Speaker 1: It's good value. It's a good value school. It's like
- 8:36the great value cerial O. All right, So for our
- 8:41topic today, because we're getting into like what it is
- 8:44to be to be real, it's like how to share
- 8:46like who you are, you know, so you're not just
- 8:49you know, you go up to your best friend's like, Hey,
- 8:52how you've been It's like I've been good.
- 8:56Speaker 2: And it's like cool. I could guess that you would
- 8:58say that.
- 9:00Speaker 1: So my question for you guys is, in moments in
- 9:04which you've like just caught up with someone, how do
- 9:09you go about catching up with someone about like what's
- 9:12going on in each other's lives? And whoever feels more
- 9:16ready to answer that can start, I'll start.
- 9:23Speaker 4: I would say that it depends on the person. I
- 9:26kind of I don't think I intentionally do this, like
- 9:30I don't recognize I'm doing this, but just reflecting on
- 9:33it now, I think it just depends on like the
- 9:36level of relationship I have. So if it's somebody I
- 9:38see every couple months, just like at bigger social gatherings,
- 9:42I'm not a close friend, then yeah, Usually stay's pretty
- 9:44surface level and I'm just like, you know what, I'm good,
- 9:46And then I just talk about work. I talk about
- 9:48like anything big going on in my life outside of work, anything.
- 9:52If we have mutual friends, if I'm doing anything with
- 9:54them that I think they might be interested in pretty
- 9:57surface level. And then there's some people who I would
- 10:03say are like on the other end of the spectrum,
- 10:05where like we just kind of like get each other
- 10:08and like I don't need to update them on what
- 10:11I've been doing since last time I saw them, because
- 10:13like I feel like there's just a deeper connection there
- 10:15that it's like, yeah, we do care, but at the
- 10:17same time, like there's just so much more depth to
- 10:20our friendship that like we don't need to just stick
- 10:23with what you did since last time I saw each other.
- 10:26It can just go straight into like, oh, there's this
- 10:28one thing that reminded me of you, and let's just
- 10:30talk about that forever, or like there's this one idea
- 10:32that's exciting to me, or like one thing I did
- 10:35and let's just dive into that and just feed off
- 10:38of each other's energy. So that's my favorite way to
- 10:40catch up. But those are, yeah, just the people that
- 10:43you can really connect with. And then I would say
- 10:46most of my friends, I would say, are like in
- 10:47between those two. So I usually just kind of like
- 10:51try to think back on, oh, you would care about
- 10:54this part of my life, this part of my life,
- 10:56and this part of my life. Okay, like let me
- 10:58give you a quick rundown of all the things and
- 11:01how close I am with the person how much time
- 11:03we have that kind of depends on how in depth
- 11:05that rundown is.
- 11:09Speaker 5: That I would say pretty much the same thing co
- 11:16about I am going to continue.
- 11:19Speaker 3: That's not.
- 11:21Speaker 5: One thing you said that really kind of like stuck
- 11:25with me is talking about people where you can like
- 11:28you don't have to update them on everything that you're
- 11:30doing because you just kind of like get each other.
- 11:32There's a lot of people that are not a lot,
- 11:34but there are people that I know that I've grown
- 11:37up with who I don't see them as much anymore
- 11:40just because like adult life and just have less time
- 11:44or whatever, and everybody has their own lives. But just
- 11:49once we get in the same room again, it could
- 11:52have been six months since we saw each other and
- 11:54we get in the same room and it's just everybody
- 11:57just instantly.
- 11:58Speaker 3: Meshes back together.
- 12:00Speaker 5: Like that's my favorite kind of friendship, and I mean,
- 12:03I'm assuming it's yours too. I'm gonna say a lot
- 12:10of the same stuff as you said, So I'm gonna
- 12:12kind of skip over that just because I wanted to
- 12:15kind of ask a question. So what you were just
- 12:18saying about filtering what you tell people based off of
- 12:24like I know you'd.
- 12:26Speaker 3: Be interested in this. I know you'd be interested in this.
- 12:30Speaker 5: Because I think that that kind of is the main
- 12:34thing that we're talking about, right, Like, that feels like
- 12:37that's kind of the big.
- 12:37Speaker 3: Problem, not problem, but topics.
- 12:43Speaker 5: So how do you go about not just based on
- 12:46time and whatever, how do you go about deciding what
- 12:49you tell people and what you don't tell people unless
- 12:51you have stuff you want to say about.
- 12:53Speaker 2: I guess she was just saying, I answer my question
- 12:57a bit and more for them to yours.
- 12:59Speaker 3: So do that and then I talk about that.
- 13:01Speaker 1: So what you, oh, shure if you already said anyway,
- 13:06for the topic of just like how do I catch
- 13:09people up? I don't know, Like I'm really bad at it.
- 13:12I go home, you know, because my parents don't live
- 13:15that far away from me, so I go home frequently
- 13:17and mom and dad are just like, oh, yeah, how's
- 13:19school been.
- 13:19Speaker 2: I'm like it's good. I was like, wait, what did
- 13:23I do in school? I don't wait, what.
- 13:25Speaker 3: Did I learn?
- 13:26Speaker 2: I don't know anything right now. It's like what am
- 13:27I doing?
- 13:28Speaker 1: And it actually comes up a lot, because like, you know,
- 13:32I'm in a PhD program server. I was like, oh,
- 13:34that's cool, It's like, what do you do it in?
- 13:35It's like, oh, physics, It's like cool. And then some
- 13:38people are just like, okay, I'm done talking now. I
- 13:42don't want to talk about physics. And other people are like,
- 13:43so what do you research? And I'm like, uh, because
- 13:47I remember last week or something a couple weeks ago
- 13:51or something like that, I went watch you Fair frequently
- 13:54has speakers on various topics and physics blah blah blah,
- 13:58and I went to a just to Q and A
- 14:00beforehand to just go listen and see what the speakers discussing.
- 14:03And then she she turns me, it's just like, so,
- 14:06what what is your research topic?
- 14:07Speaker 3: I'm like.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Astrophysics, and I'm like, she's an astrophysicist, so like more
- 14:14detailed than I was, Like wait, what what am I
- 14:17actually trying to learn? It's like that kind of seems
- 14:19like an important thing. I don't know, I don't know
- 14:22why this is going where it is, but I think
- 14:25it's it's a a big thing because you know, I
- 14:29find it really difficult to like keep people up to
- 14:32date with things because I remember when, like you and
- 14:35other people your age graduated, the whole friend group is
- 14:38just like, Okay, Nick, we got to remind you to
- 14:42keep everyone up to date with what's going on up here.
- 14:45Speaker 2: So I remember getting text and.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Just like, hey, make sure you, you know, tell liz
- 14:49Anna or this person to that person that like we're
- 14:52doing these things. Like I would have never thought about
- 14:54that myself. So it's like it's not natural for me
- 14:57to like want to catch people up with me. But
- 14:59like what what Michael is saying about. Just you know,
- 15:02when you just go met up with friends who you
- 15:04haven't seen or talked to in six months and it's
- 15:06just like bam, and you're just doing the same stuff together.
- 15:09It's like that's really cool because I don't need to
- 15:11catch them up because we just like being together. And
- 15:15I was going to morph it into the question that
- 15:17you ask but I completely forgot.
- 15:19Speaker 3: What question I asked.
- 15:20Speaker 5: Yeah, So basically, like, how do you decide where to
- 15:27draw the line?
- 15:28Speaker 3: I guess in terms of what you're telling people.
- 15:30Speaker 5: Because obviously there's going to be some people that you
- 15:32tell less and some people that you tell more. But
- 15:35how do you determine where the line is and how
- 15:38much you're going to tell one person versus another person?
- 15:40And why I guess is the more important thing.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Yeah, so I'll continue with my physics concept because that
- 15:47happens a lot now that I'm in grad school.
- 15:51Speaker 3: And this also doesn't have to be just like about
- 15:52catching up.
- 15:53Speaker 5: It could just be about like what's on your heart,
- 15:55what's on your mind kind of thing like not.
- 15:57Speaker 3: Just like what did you do like out yourself?
- 16:00Speaker 5: I guess more because that's a more kind of philosophical thing.
- 16:04I guess And just like, Oh, I went to Walmart,
- 16:07but I'm not gonna tell you abodit about that vers.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Walmart was really cool, Like they had this like really
- 16:12cool thing up on those shelves.
- 16:14Speaker 5: Wa okay, but that's the things you wouldn't tell it
- 16:16to everybody, you mighty, I went to Walmart to one person,
- 16:19then the other person, you might say, I went to
- 16:20Walmart and I saw this thing that was super interesting,
- 16:23and that is one person that you were interested, but
- 16:25you don't tell the other person.
- 16:27Speaker 1: So like as as Liz was saying earlier, it depends
- 16:29on your relationship with them, like who they are to you,
- 16:33and so like when I talk about like my physics
- 16:35things with people, one, I can use context clues to
- 16:39determine whether or not I should continue because some people say, oh.
- 16:42Speaker 2: And what do you do? And it's like, oh, I'm
- 16:43a graduate school. It's like, oh and what physics?
- 16:46Speaker 1: Like okay, and it's like I might say a bit
- 16:48more of it's like, let's move the conversation because clearly
- 16:51not interested. It was other people like, oh cool, I'm
- 16:53I was actually an astrophysicist back when I was young.
- 16:55It's like became mitieve to now it's like, so what
- 16:57are you interested in? And and then like those are
- 17:00the things that you can really get into it. So
- 17:02it's like it's context because it's like, is this person
- 17:04bored with what I'm saying? The answer is typically yes,
- 17:07but it's fine. But as for just like to share
- 17:11who I am, just like I'll have to come back
- 17:15to that. That's that's a difficult one. That's I think
- 17:18my biggest struggle in both my spiritual and my relational lives.
- 17:22Speaker 5: It is for me too, like let's why, because I
- 17:24just want to like know what you guys think about it.
- 17:29Speaker 4: I feel like more recently I've started sharing more with
- 17:33people about like yeah, just like those deeper things like
- 17:35what's going on in my heart? And yeah, I've really
- 17:39just been met with like a lot of receptivity to that.
- 17:43There's been a lot of fruit coming from that, And yeah,
- 17:47I think there's just less fear of like a vulnerability.
- 17:50And I think, honestly, it probably circles back to like
- 17:53me being trying to like root myself more as a
- 17:56daughter of Christ or not a daughter of Christ, of God.
- 18:03And I think then it's like, well, why would I
- 18:07be afraid to share, Like what's the risk in that?
- 18:09Because like if I'm rooted somewhere else, then like what
- 18:12this person thinks about me doesn't really like it's not
- 18:15really going to hurt me if I'm not like if
- 18:20I'm not finding my identity there. And then I also
- 18:24think of it as like, wait, this could be like
- 18:26an evangelization opportunity, Like even if it's not just about
- 18:29spiritual life, even if it's just a part of my heart,
- 18:31like that sing a cool water bottle or whatever gets
- 18:34you excited, Like that's still like part of your heart,
- 18:36and like it could be intriguing to somebody like oh
- 18:39why do why is that interesting to him? It still
- 18:42shares like the fact that it's on our minds and
- 18:46like we feel like sharing it. I think that's like
- 18:49what really speaks about like our personality and like how
- 18:53we react to things. So yeah, I think more recently,
- 18:57when I would naturally suppress, I'm like, you know what,
- 19:00I'm gonna say this to them, Like I don't know
- 19:02why they would care, but like it's important to me
- 19:04right now, and ultimately, like why we're talking to people
- 19:08is like we're trying to get to know each other.
- 19:11And if you're trying to get to know the person,
- 19:14like it honestly makes more sense too for us to
- 19:18offer up things than for them to just ask questions
- 19:21because they don't know the answer. Uh so they can't
- 19:25predict like the best question to get to know you
- 19:28best because they don't know you yet. So I think
- 19:33if you just, I don't know, share what's on your heart,
- 19:36like they're not going to know unless you share, because
- 19:39I've had that happen before where I'm having a conversation
- 19:42with somebody and they keep like steering the conversation one way,
- 19:45and I'm like, I mean, I can't talk about this,
- 19:47but like I just don't really care that much, like, oh,
- 19:49this other thing is really important to me, and like
- 19:51I can't figure out a way to get this in So, yeah,
- 19:53I think it's just more about like offering, like more
- 19:56freely offering up what's on our minds and what's on
- 19:59our hearts, and being receptive to what other people are
- 20:02offering and giving them a space to offer up what
- 20:06they are really thinking.
- 20:07Speaker 1: That's a good point because I think back on the
- 20:09big Racers family gatherings when we all go an extended
- 20:13family all gets together Gramma's Haus or something, you know,
- 20:15a lot of the time they answer uncles ask questions.
- 20:17Then it's like they little ask a question, I'll answer
- 20:20it briefly in my style. Most questions I actually answered briefly.
- 20:24Speaker 2: If you're a listener to this podcast, you'd be surprised
- 20:26at that.
- 20:27Speaker 3: Good fooled me.
- 20:28Speaker 1: But like if it's about myself and someone's asking me directly,
- 20:31it's like, h but but yeah, so like sometimes don't
- 20:36just wait for the question to be asked to share something,
- 20:39you know, because I think that really kills a lot
- 20:43of the conversations I've had with like my aunts and
- 20:46uncles or people who I'm not like super close to.
- 20:48And it's like I don't really struggle talking with my
- 20:50friends too much, but for someone who's like an acquaintance.
- 20:53Speaker 2: It's just like, well, but just like, yeah, I don't.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Need to wait for them to ask a question of
- 20:58me for me to talk to them or response to them.
- 21:00Was like why I can ask them questions? But two,
- 21:02I can also just volunteer information about myself for no
- 21:06apparent reason other than why not and it might be
- 21:09a little fun.
- 21:11Speaker 5: I think my favorite thing that anybody has ever told
- 21:14me regarding this topic. So I was talking to somebody
- 21:20and I was like ranting about music stuff. We were
- 21:22talking about a song that just came out and I
- 21:25was like picking it apart, and I was talking about
- 21:27all the little musical things going on and like the
- 21:29vocal processing and whether or not I.
- 21:31Speaker 3: Have auto tune and whatever.
- 21:33Speaker 5: I'm talking about all this stuff, and at one point,
- 21:38just in my head, I was like, oh, I should
- 21:40stop because they probably don't care about what I'm saying.
- 21:43And so I stopped and I like basically apologized, and
- 21:47I was like, sorry, I don't know why I did that.
- 21:49I don't know why I said that. I know you
- 21:51don't care whatever, And this is like I'm still not
- 21:56great at that. Sometimes I still do the same thing,
- 21:58but it's always gonna stick with me because she said,
- 22:03never apologize to me again about talking about your passion,
- 22:07or never apologize to me again for talking about your passions,
- 22:11because there's no other way that I'm gonna get to
- 22:14know you. And I was like, even though I still
- 22:17struggle with it, I think back on that so much.
- 22:19I'm like, nobody is ever gonna know who I am
- 22:22if I don't share that stuff, because the music stuff
- 22:25is important to me and that's such a big part
- 22:26of who I am.
- 22:27Speaker 3: And so it's kind of like if people ask.
- 22:31Speaker 5: You questions, they might ask you like where do you
- 22:32go to school? The place you go to school isn't
- 22:36who you are. It's just something that you do or
- 22:38something that you did. So I guess I don't know
- 22:43where I'm going with that, but it's the things that
- 22:46are actually you, the things that kind of make up
- 22:49who you are as a person as opposed to just
- 22:51the things that you're involved with whatever, are kind of
- 22:56the things that you should be sharing more. And I
- 22:57feel like I don't do a great job of that,
- 22:59And I feel like it's kind of the big thing
- 23:00that people don't do a great job at in general,
- 23:03where it's like I'll talk about Oh, I used to
- 23:06be a delivery driver for this pizza place, and like,
- 23:09but that doesn't tell you anything about me. It just
- 23:11tells you something that I did, So I mean.
- 23:14Speaker 2: It does tells you a little bit about you, Like
- 23:15you chose to work there.
- 23:18Speaker 3: That's fair.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Sure it must be a terrible person being a pizza
- 23:23delivery driver.
- 23:24Speaker 3: Pizza, it was good pizza.
- 23:26Speaker 5: I don't like the place, but they had good food.
- 23:31I guess the point that I'm trying to get at
- 23:34is just the things that you share. If you want to, like,
- 23:38actually be real with somebody, you should share about who
- 23:41you are instead of what you do, because the things
- 23:44that make up who you are are the only things
- 23:46that are gonna let the other person get to know
- 23:47who you are as an individual.
- 23:48Speaker 3: And if they want to know, then they'll listen.
- 23:50Speaker 5: And if they don't want to know, then you can tell,
- 23:53like you were saying, they're trying to divert the conversation
- 23:55away from what you're talking about, and you can be like, Okay,
- 23:57they don't want to talk about that, But that's less
- 23:59of a reflection on you than it is a reflection
- 24:01on them and their willingness to be receptive to what
- 24:04you're saying, so like, that doesn't mean that you're doing
- 24:06anything wrong by talking about physics. It just means that
- 24:09they're not interested in hearing about that, and maybe they
- 24:12need to be more open to it.
- 24:13Speaker 1: It just means that their question was not genuinely like.
- 24:16Speaker 2: So what do you like? So what do you learn?
- 24:17Speaker 1: It's like they don't if I tell you on your board,
- 24:20you're clearly not wanting to know what I learned in
- 24:21your physics.
- 24:23Speaker 5: That's why I like when people say how's it going,
- 24:25and you say, like, do you want the real answer?
- 24:27Do you want the like I'm good, everything's great? Like
- 24:30most people only want I'm good, everything's good. Most people
- 24:34aren't asking the genuine question because they don't really want
- 24:37the answer. So I think that's just it made me
- 24:40think of that when you're saying that you stop talking
- 24:42about stuff because you can tell people aren't interested, I
- 24:45think that that's less about you.
- 24:47Speaker 3: And more about them, just in my opinion.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Yeah, because what you were saying just made me really
- 24:52thinks like, Yeah, why is it that we so easily
- 24:55apologize for just being interested in something? You know, just
- 24:59talk about stuff. It's like, oh, I've been talking too long,
- 25:01I'm sorry, I shouldn't. I should talk, I should like
- 25:03take control of this conversation. It's like, well, what if
- 25:07they just like listening to you talking. It's like and honestly,
- 25:11that is something like that I've noticed in my life.
- 25:13Like the most attractive thing in an individual is their genuineness.
- 25:17So like, Michael, when you're just like playing music randomly,
- 25:21I don't understand it, but you get this little smirk
- 25:23on your face, and I'm like, it's an attractive thing.
- 25:27Like it's just just something like that genuine smile that
- 25:30you get that I see that you're enjoying stuff, and like,
- 25:32I now want to have a little part of that
- 25:34joy you're having with that, and like that's such a
- 25:36cool thing to share. And and and other people I've
- 25:39noticed and just like when they're being genuine about some
- 25:41conversation that they love or a topic that they do,
- 25:44like they just have this exuberant joy with them and
- 25:47it's just like, I'm jealous, where can I get this joy?
- 25:51And how could I like view this in the way
- 25:53that you do, Because you know, I've had conversations with
- 25:57people about stuff that I don't really like.
- 25:59Speaker 2: It's like I don't really like this topic. It's kind
- 26:01of boring.
- 26:02Speaker 1: I've yet to have a good conversation with someone about biology,
- 26:05but that's just because I'm hate biology. But no, it's like,
- 26:08if there's someone who like is legitimately interested and has
- 26:11a joy in like understanding biology and stuff, I would
- 26:14enjoy listening to them and hearing them talk about it,
- 26:16even though I'm like, this is painful in my head
- 26:19about biology.
- 26:20Speaker 2: I don't know why, but just.
- 26:22Speaker 1: Like that genuineness is it makes me jealous and it's
- 26:25like I want to share. And then I start talking
- 26:29a bit about something that's interesting to me, like oh,
- 26:31I'm sorry, I'm talking to existential or blah blah blah
- 26:33philosophical thing for you, and it's like I'm sorry. It's
- 26:36like it's not the very thing that you want other
- 26:38people to give to you, so why don't you give
- 26:40it to others?
- 26:42Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 26:44Speaker 5: Yeah, it's like I would be afraid to tell people
- 26:46about stuff that I actually care about, but then I'm
- 26:48like enough. I'll be like, oh, I'm good enough about me,
- 26:51how about you? And I want them to tell me
- 26:53all the interesting stuff about them, and I get annoyed
- 26:55if they're just like, oh, I'm good.
- 26:57Speaker 3: It's like, why would I not just give them the.
- 26:59Speaker 5: Exact thing that I want from them. That's an interesting
- 27:03way to think about it. I guess I hadn't really
- 27:04thought about like that before.
- 27:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:07Speaker 4: I wonder if that comes from like just the uncertainty
- 27:12that people actually care though, Yeah, and yeah, I think
- 27:16a lot of people don't care because you can't. I
- 27:21think this is something I've run into as well, Like, Yeah,
- 27:24if you're at a party and you have time and
- 27:26like you're there to have conversations with people, I think
- 27:29people tend to be a little bit more open. There's
- 27:31still plenty of those like surface level conversations because I
- 27:34think people just don't have practice or know how to
- 27:36get there or know that it's worth listening to conversations
- 27:39that might seem boring at first. But I think more
- 27:43often those conversations happen when it's like you run into
- 27:47somebody somewhere and you're like, oh, like I wasn't like
- 27:51open to this right now, I was planning on.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Yah.
- 27:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:56Speaker 4: So I guess then it's like how many people, or like,
- 28:00in what circumstances should we try to dive into like
- 28:04these deep passions and when is it okay to just
- 28:08like let those opportunities pass because we aren't infinite. We
- 28:12don't have infinite time or infinite attention, and we can't
- 28:17necessarily like dive into those deeper conversations with everybody. But
- 28:22maybe we can more than we think we can.
- 28:26Speaker 1: I think that takes well one practice, as you were saying,
- 28:30but also intentionality, because I do remember there's times, you know,
- 28:35after class or whatnot, just talking to some people outside
- 28:38of class, just this thing, that thing about the homework
- 28:40and this or that, and then I'm like, oh, I
- 28:43was planning on like going and working on homework for
- 28:45a bit, and its like I need to go do
- 28:47my homework blah blah blah, and then I just leave
- 28:48and go, and like I could have stayed and talked
- 28:50for like another five minutes to just like get to
- 28:54understand who they are a bit more besides just like, oh, hey,
- 28:56have you done this homework? No?
- 28:57Speaker 2: Okay?
- 28:58Speaker 1: Well, and to be more intentional is that, but also
- 29:01like to know yourself well enough to know we don't
- 29:07have infinite time, but we do got a lot more
- 29:08time than we might think.
- 29:11Speaker 2: We're always like I'm so busy, I can't do this.
- 29:13I can't do that. And then I spend forty minutes
- 29:15reading a book and I'm like that was fun.
- 29:17Speaker 1: I was like, wait, it was fun. But I told
- 29:21someone else they didn't have any time today because I'm
- 29:23so busy with all of my homework. I was like, well,
- 29:25clearly I had forty minutes I could spare, but to
- 29:28just like to understand oneself well enough to be like,
- 29:32you know, I know I don't need every single minute
- 29:36between this class and the next class to do my homework,
- 29:39so I'll stay and talk and have a good time
- 29:40with you. It's like it could be service level, it
- 29:42could just be this or that, but just the better
- 29:44I get to know someone through the service level, eventually
- 29:46deeper things slowly creeping. I just like to understand my
- 29:50own schedule and my own self enough to be like,
- 29:55I can give you more time. Because there's so many
- 29:57times I'm like, oh, I gotta get going, you know,
- 30:00I got to get to this event on time. And
- 30:02then I get through the end event on time and
- 30:04no one else is there yet. It's like, oh, I
- 30:06literally had more time I could have done to stay
- 30:09and talked with whoever I was with, and it's like
- 30:11why do I need to like rush about doing this
- 30:13or that.
- 30:15Speaker 5: Yeah, I think also it for me, it the place
- 30:21I would want to get better is just being open
- 30:23to the conversation when it happens.
- 30:24Speaker 3: So like, you don't need to force the conversation to happen.
- 30:26If you have.
- 30:27Speaker 5: Fifteen minutes, you can't talk about you know, your deepest,
- 30:30darkest secrets and share everything with somebody, But if the
- 30:35opportunity for that conversation arises. I think this is where
- 30:38I struggle the most, is like I'll have nothing on
- 30:41my schedule and a person sitting right in front of
- 30:44me and they're like talk to me, and I just
- 30:46like don't I like close myself off and I don't
- 30:49take the opportunity. So it's like I think the way
- 30:53that I would summarize it, and I always hate saying
- 30:56stuff on here and I don't want to make it
- 30:58seem like.
- 30:59Speaker 3: I'm good because I'm not. So it's like stuff I'm
- 31:02still working on trying to figure out. But it would
- 31:04just be you don't need to force the.
- 31:07Speaker 5: Conversation to happen, because then force vulnerability isn't really real vulnerability.
- 31:14I feel like there have been times where it could
- 31:18still be a good conversation. Like there are a couple
- 31:21of times we were hanging out over the summer where
- 31:23after everybody left, it was like three or four people
- 31:25were like, let's have a deep conversation, and nobody says
- 31:27anything because it's like I don't even though I'm supposed
- 31:29to say, and that we were trying to like force
- 31:32it out of people and just it ends up being
- 31:35kind of like a feigned vulnerability, so it's not real.
- 31:37But it was still a good conversation every time we
- 31:40did it. But I think it would just be be
- 31:44open to the conversation when it happens, whoever it is,
- 31:48wherever it is, whenever it is, however much time you have,
- 31:51you don't need to force it to be longer than
- 31:53it needs to be just because you think, oh, we
- 31:56should be having a good conversation right now. But a
- 31:58lot of the times, like Bawman's house, well we'll be
- 32:02standing at the door and then all of a sudden,
- 32:06people are just like they bring something up, and then
- 32:08we talk for like another hour or two after that,
- 32:10and it's like nobody really needs to go, and it's
- 32:13like we just start the conversation and then it ends
- 32:15up being really really good. And it's like, because we
- 32:17allow ourselves to be open to that, then we were.
- 32:19Speaker 3: Able to have that conversation.
- 32:21Speaker 5: But in another instance where you only have like ten minutes,
- 32:24you aren't necessarily gonna you might be open to it,
- 32:27it's just that you can't do it, Like you physically
- 32:30can't say enough.
- 32:31Speaker 3: Words in the amount of time that you have.
- 32:34Speaker 5: So I guess that would be my answer to that
- 32:36question is just like, be open to it when that happens.
- 32:40Speaker 4: I wonder if there's different ingredients though, rather than just
- 32:44like super deep conversations that you need several hours for
- 32:48or yeah, my day was good, Like what about those
- 32:51times like Nick was talking about, where it's five or
- 32:53ten minutes that you might have or like those coworkers
- 32:57that I see every once in a while, but they
- 32:59don't because those conversations that takes trust to get to
- 33:03that point where somebody is willing to give you that
- 33:06much of their time. So I think sometimes it might
- 33:10just be like building up to that. So if I'm
- 33:13like with a coworker and I know I'm gonna just
- 33:17be in the elevator with them for a minute and
- 33:18a half, like okay, a lot of times not even
- 33:21like I don't even know how to start a conversation,
- 33:23But if there's instances where you know you're gonna have
- 33:27a little bit of time with somebody instead of just
- 33:30running through those basic catchup questions, if there's some way
- 33:35to invite a little bit more depth to that and
- 33:43just see where that goes, and to be content with
- 33:45it only being a five or tenant conversation. But I
- 33:50would just love for people to leave conversations with me
- 33:52thinking like, Wow, she like actually cares about me, not
- 33:56just she's trying to do the social noise, like apply
- 34:00or comply with social norms.
- 34:04Speaker 3: That was kind of what was it that you were
- 34:06talking about last time? What was it that I said?
- 34:09Speaker 5: It's people don't care what you know until they know
- 34:12that you care. So it's like, if you're gonna try
- 34:14and have that kind of conversation, there needs to be
- 34:17the trust both ways where you're like and you're right,
- 34:19though you do have to build that up.
- 34:21Speaker 3: Over the little conversation.
- 34:22Speaker 5: So you shouldn't go That's something that I've like had
- 34:26a problem with that times where I'll go from not
- 34:29saying anything to all of a sudden, I just dump
- 34:31everything on somebody, and it's.
- 34:32Speaker 3: Like I needed to probably take that a little bit slower.
- 34:38Speaker 1: But yeah, yeah, And like when we talk about like
- 34:43these deep conversations about things, it's not like these are
- 34:46my deepest, darkest secrets. This is everythin I've committed in
- 34:49the past twelve years. This is the biggest struggles.
- 34:53Speaker 2: Of my life.
- 34:53Speaker 1: No, Sometimes it's just like things that are not sow
- 34:56surface level is like, oh, how's the weather today?
- 34:58Speaker 3: Great?
- 34:59Speaker 2: Except I've had some pretty good.
- 35:01Speaker 1: Very brief conversations because I've been out on the trails
- 35:03a lot this past week, being spring break and good
- 35:06weather up until the storm and everything was muddy, And
- 35:09sometimes it'd just be like you passed by someone on
- 35:11the trail and like, oh, hey, how's it going.
- 35:12Speaker 2: You're enjoying the weather. Yeah, it's great.
- 35:14Speaker 1: And because it's just that chance encounter on the trail,
- 35:17you're going in opposite directions, I'm not going to be.
- 35:19Speaker 2: Like, stop my bike, Hi, how are you doing? Have
- 35:22I ever told you about?
- 35:24Speaker 1: Like No, it's in those cases it's like, yeah, just
- 35:27something like how's the weather. The contexts not like enjoy
- 35:29the weather. I'm enjoying the weather right now, and I'm
- 35:32sharing that with you and says like, even though the
- 35:35how's the weather is a classic surface level topic, it's
- 35:38not always surface level if you're truly enjoying the weather,
- 35:41and it's like this is glorious, but also just I've noticed,
- 35:46you know, as we've been talking, it's like I was
- 35:48looking back in the past couple of weeks and like
- 35:50I have gotten better at, you know, having those slightly
- 35:54deeper conversations with with people I don't really know too well,
- 36:00particularly if there's a shared common interest. Like I go
- 36:03to the climbing gym a lot, and a lot of
- 36:06times it's fairly empty, there's a couple of people there,
- 36:08and then I just end up somewhat nearby someone else
- 36:11who's climbing, who's trying to climb, and then they fall,
- 36:14and then we make like comments.
- 36:16Speaker 2: Like, oh, yeah, it's a rough one.
- 36:17Speaker 1: I was trying that early blah blah blah, and then
- 36:19you just talk abouit more, and then you start talking
- 36:21about like how do you go about doing this climb
- 36:23or that climb, and it's like that's something that's a
- 36:25bit deeper than just the surface level of oh yeah,
- 36:28that's a rough climb. Have a good one at that
- 36:30and then walking away. But it's still not like I'm
- 36:34sharing my vulnerabilities with you. But still somehow that feels
- 36:37hard at times to be like I'm just gonna talk
- 36:40to this person and just have a good time in
- 36:41this one aspect of sharing. And it's it's difficult because
- 36:47like it feels like it's a huge vulnerable thing and
- 36:50it's like, dude, you're literally just talking about like how
- 36:53to go about doing this climb with someone, and it's like,
- 36:57that's not going to like hurt you. I mean unless
- 37:00you fall and hit your head.
- 37:01Speaker 3: But you know, so the.
- 37:04Speaker 5: Little things like that aren't big vulnerable, deep dark secrets.
- 37:08Speaker 3: And you can talk about climbing and it's one thing.
- 37:11Speaker 5: But I was just thinking, if we want to tie
- 37:14it more into like an evangelization kind of thing, because
- 37:20especially what Fulton always talks about is listening and listening
- 37:26being the best form of evangelization. But so let's imagine
- 37:31you have all the time in the world, and time
- 37:33isn't necessarily a constraint.
- 37:37Speaker 2: What all those books I would read, actually.
- 37:43Speaker 4: It is all the conversations I would have I don't
- 37:45read because I like talking too much. So we're like opposites.
- 37:48Speaker 2: I feel like, well, I do like talking, so it's
- 37:50not like I love reading and hate talking.
- 37:54Speaker 4: I like the idea of reading, but I'm going to
- 37:56prioritize conversations every time.
- 37:58Speaker 2: Sometimes I prioritize reading, just like I want to stop
- 38:01talking you.
- 38:02Speaker 3: I just want to read my book. You just want
- 38:04to talk to yourself instead.
- 38:06Speaker 1: Anytime I'm talking with Michael, I would prefer to be
- 38:07reading a book.
- 38:10Speaker 2: Feeling completely.
- 38:13Speaker 3: What was I even saying? I'm sorry, No, you're fine.
- 38:16I'm trying to remember what I was talking about them
- 38:20listening eventelisation. So obviously we're all here to you know, no,
- 38:31love and serve God.
- 38:32Speaker 5: Love your neighbor as yourself, if you're going to truly
- 38:36love your neighbor. I think the definition of like love,
- 38:40just in a general sense that I always use, is
- 38:44willing the ultimate good of another, which is ultimately them
- 38:47getting to heaven. And if you want them to get
- 38:48to heaven, then you should be doing everything you can.
- 38:52Speaker 3: To enrich their lives spiritually.
- 38:55Speaker 5: So I guess I don't outside of this, I don't
- 39:01have a lot of super deep philosophical religious, spiritual conversations.
- 39:06But in your guys experience how does that usually go
- 39:10if you try to like if because a lot of
- 39:13people don't, a lot of people think it's too personal.
- 39:16Jordan Peterson is a good example where people ask him
- 39:18do you believe in God? And he's like, that's such
- 39:20a deep, personal, intrusive question and he like doesn't want
- 39:24to answer it. Has that been your guys experience trying
- 39:28to talk to people about spiritual stuff? Not everybody, because
- 39:31obviously there's people you can talk to about spiritual stuff
- 39:33and they want to talk about it. But people who
- 39:36are a little bit more hesitant, Like how, because I
- 39:40know that's probably most people. Honestly, if you just go
- 39:42up to a random person that if you just like
- 39:44go into your contacts and you scroll through and you
- 39:46pick somebody and you try to talk about spiritual stuff,
- 39:50a lot of people are going to shy.
- 39:51Speaker 3: Away from that. So like, how, what has been your
- 39:55guy's experience with that?
- 39:56Speaker 5: I guess, or those kinds of conversations if you've had them.
- 40:01Speaker 1: So I've I've done a lot of like discussion groups
- 40:03this past semester, just like this discussion group reading Theology's
- 40:08Body by John Paul the Second and and just reading
- 40:11a passage and discussing it, and in those instances, I'm
- 40:15a lot more likely to share my thoughts on things
- 40:18or it's just like how I picture stuff, And so
- 40:21very frequently it happens from like I'm talking about stuff
- 40:23and then everyone is quiet, and it's like, well, this
- 40:26etheron means two things. They're they're wrapped and listening with attention,
- 40:30or they're like what is he saying? Can he please
- 40:32be done so I can talk? And so almost every
- 40:35single time it ends up, I.
- 40:36Speaker 5: Feel like that's how it is a Bible in a year.
- 40:38When I talk, it's like everybody's just like.
- 40:40Speaker 3: Okay, just.
- 40:42Speaker 1: No, you're interesting, but just like so very frequently it's
- 40:47just like then I start like trying to wrap up
- 40:50my thoughts really quickly, just like blah blah blah, and
- 40:52so it's kind of like that, and then I just stop, randomly,
- 40:55probably in the middle of a thought, just be like
- 40:57and that's that. And then there's like he set to
- 41:00silence because everyone's like is he talking more or not?
- 41:02And that just makes it really awkward, and I'm like,
- 41:06I really hope that I'm trying to enrich your lives.
- 41:08And then you're not just like I don't know what
- 41:10you're talking about.
- 41:11Speaker 3: Man, you're weird.
- 41:13Speaker 5: How do people react though, Like, if you have like
- 41:15a outside of like a discussion group, how do people
- 41:18usually react if.
- 41:19Speaker 3: You try to talk about spiritual stuff, like.
- 41:22Speaker 5: If you're talking to a friend or a family member
- 41:24that you don't usually have those conversations with, do you?
- 41:29Speaker 3: I mean, like, has that happened?
- 41:30Speaker 5: I guess I should I shouldn't just assume that you
- 41:33like having all these.
- 41:34Speaker 1: Comments I say, I love having conversations, but I'm really
- 41:36bad at actually doing them.
- 41:38Speaker 2: But yeah, it is.
- 41:40Speaker 1: It does depend on the person and the scenario because
- 41:43most of the time I don't just like randomly I'm
- 41:45hanging out with like one other person. I've been getting
- 41:49better at that type of stuff to be like, hey,
- 41:51the whole group's not getting together, but I can still
- 41:54get together with just like one or two people and
- 41:55that's fine. But a lot of times in which I
- 42:00try to like instigate something when there's a group around,
- 42:02it's just like, well, I'm not the only poll in
- 42:05this room of like interesting things happening, And for a
- 42:10lot of people, a conversation where it's like it takes
- 42:13a bit to get into it and so it's not
- 42:17a lot less immediate, and so it's a lot harder
- 42:20to actually get into those conversations than it is to
- 42:24just go do some crazy thing elsewhere or where people
- 42:27are being a bit loud, and so it's a little
- 42:28more exciting that way. And I definitely fall into this myself,
- 42:31you know, and groups is just like this people talking.
- 42:34Speaker 2: It's like.
- 42:35Speaker 1: In every group there's like a a gradient of people
- 42:38I want to talk to for various reasons or this
- 42:40or that. It's like, Oh, this person's really good at
- 42:42talking about this. This person really good at that. And so
- 42:44like a lot of times in a group, I'm like, oh,
- 42:46I kind of want to go over to this section
- 42:48and join in on this conversation that they're having over there,
- 42:51or this conversation over there. Like Michael and I've talked to,
- 42:54like I'm really good at being aware of all the
- 42:57different things going on in the room and all of
- 42:59the different conversations and being like I could I kind
- 43:03of want to be part of that one. I kind
- 43:04of want to be part of that one. And then
- 43:05I realize I'm completely not paying attention to the person
- 43:08in front of me. It's like, oh wait, shoot, they
- 43:11were telling me something, Oh no, and then I feel
- 43:16really bad about it and it's like, yeah.
- 43:18Speaker 3: Oh yeah.
- 43:19Speaker 1: When other people do that to me, that really annoys me.
- 43:22How much am I annoying them by like not really focusing.
- 43:25It's like I kind of like, this isn't the most
- 43:27interesting conversation right now. I could be having more interest
- 43:29over there. It's like, what if you give it two minutes,
- 43:31maybe it could be blowing your mind.
- 43:36Speaker 2: And that's that.
- 43:39Speaker 4: I would say my experience with conversations with like people
- 43:46I don't regularly talk too about religious topics with has
- 43:50mainly come through work. I've naturally surround myself with people
- 43:54who share very similar values to me, So I feel
- 43:56like work is my one true primary apostolate to evangelize
- 44:02with other people. And I think, like Nick was saying,
- 44:05like it is hard to do when there's a big
- 44:07group of people. So as an accountant, I'm an auditor
- 44:10and sometimes there'll be like five people in the room
- 44:13and you're all working together. Yeah, conversation jumps all over
- 44:16the place. It stays pretty light. It's hard to go there.
- 44:19My favorite is when it's just me and one other person.
- 44:21I'm like, yes, we're gonna have some great conversations. So yeah,
- 44:27I think a lot of it comes back to like
- 44:31starting like how do you even open those conversations? How
- 44:34I found is just sharing about my life, like not
- 44:36forcing it. And when people ask like, oh, like how
- 44:41long did it take you to get to work this morning?
- 44:43Like there was so much bad traffic and I was
- 44:45like oh really, Like oh okay, that's like I'm sorry
- 44:48you had traffic issues or whatever. And They're like, well,
- 44:50which way did you take? And I'm like, well, I
- 44:51took that way too, but I got here earlier because
- 44:54I went to Mass before. And then they're like, oh,
- 44:57you went to Mass today day? And they're like, how
- 45:01oft do you go Mass? And it's like, well, I
- 45:03try to go every day and then they'll be like
- 45:06every day, like that's an hour of your life, Oh
- 45:09my gosh, and I'm like, wow, technically it's not an hour.
- 45:13And then like I got into that conversation spurred on
- 45:16to like an hour, hour and a half long conversation. Yeah,
- 45:19I should have been working, but I was like this
- 45:21is more important. And then he was just asking all
- 45:27these questions and it got into like Jesus and the
- 45:30Eucharis and like that's really God, and what is transubstantiation
- 45:33and mortal sin and what qualifies is mortal sin and
- 45:36all of these things. And then the next day he
- 45:38showed me he was like, hey, look on my phone,
- 45:40like you can see my search history. Like I was
- 45:41looking up things about the faith. And one of the
- 45:45things is he was a cradle Catholic who just was
- 45:48poorly catechised. And so I think a lot of times
- 45:51like it's people who like think they have an idea
- 45:54of what you believe, but don't have a full understanding.
- 45:59So I think there needs to definitely be an openness,
- 46:01but a lot of it is just like sharing about ourselves,
- 46:05like just things that naturally come up. I think we
- 46:07all live with God at the center of our lives,
- 46:12so like obviously that's just naturally going to come up
- 46:15in conversation, like I'd have to hide it otherwise. So
- 46:20just letting those times shine through, and then the people
- 46:22who actually care in are open are going to ask
- 46:24those follow up questions that are going to lead to
- 46:27those opportunities. And I think too, it's also how we
- 46:31present it, because sometimes I'll present it in a way
- 46:33of like oh yeah, I just like went to Mass
- 46:35and like try to hide it or couch it and
- 46:38make it sound not exciting and important. But then other times,
- 46:42like sometimes managers last me like, oh, what are you
- 46:45doing this weekend? And I'm like, oh, well, going to
- 46:47seminary on Friday night for Nazareth Night. And then I'm
- 46:50like going to this Bible study and then I'm like
- 46:51hanging out with these friends doing this thing. And then
- 46:53I'm and like a lot of it ends up being religious,
- 46:56and I'm like, well there's no way to avoid it. Okay,
- 46:58I'm gonna share it. And then they're like, like, you
- 47:01do a lot of stuff with the church, don't you.
- 47:03And I'm like, oh, yeah, I guess I do. And
- 47:05I think if they actually care to get to know you,
- 47:09it's just naturally a part of who you are.
- 47:11Speaker 2: I guess that's a life act.
- 47:11Speaker 1: How do you evangelize with people well when they want
- 47:13to know what you do? If all you do is
- 47:16religious things, you got to no other options to hide behind.
- 47:20Speaker 3: I think that, Uh. I liked it so much and
- 47:25I can never remember it.
- 47:27Speaker 5: Our definition of evangelization when we did the first one
- 47:30first evangelization episode, I think it was something like live
- 47:35your life in a way that shares the love of
- 47:39Christ that you've experienced in your own life.
- 47:41Speaker 3: Is that what it was? Something like that sounds right.
- 47:44It was not the right word, but it's not the
- 47:46exact way I said that.
- 47:47Speaker 5: But because like you were just saying, if God is
- 47:53at the center of your life, obviously it's going to
- 47:55come through in your conversations unless you're trying to hide it.
- 47:59Speaker 3: And I'm trying to think of I'm trying to see
- 48:04if I want to.
- 48:06Speaker 5: Turn the conversation a little bit in that direction, because
- 48:10I feel like a lot of times maybe not you guys,
- 48:17I know I have though where you kind of try
- 48:20and hide it because you're like, I feel like this
- 48:22is gonna be awkward. I don't know how they're gonna
- 48:24respond if I say I went to mass I don't
- 48:26know how they're gonna respond if I say it's a
- 48:30Friday during when I can't go chick flay and whatever
- 48:33because I'm not gonna eat meat, like and then so
- 48:35you just don't say it, like.
- 48:38Speaker 3: Is that has that ever been something that you guys
- 48:41have experienced?
- 48:44Speaker 5: I guess where you try and because this could be
- 48:47an entire thing because we were talking about don't be
- 48:50ashamed of your faith as an entire topic for an episode,
- 48:53but if we're just talking about in daily life and conversations,
- 48:58like has I ever been a problem for you guys
- 48:59where you find yourself almost not being ashamed of it,
- 49:04but feeling like, oh, I just.
- 49:05Speaker 3: Probably shouldn't bring that up because whatever.
- 49:08Speaker 1: Dude, Yeah, that's like my whole life because like I've
- 49:11said before, it's like I've never like when I was
- 49:14in high school, I literally never shared anything about my
- 49:16spiritual life. Like I had daily prayers, I had like
- 49:19habitual prayers and this and that that I did, and like,
- 49:22you know, when my brother came into the room to
- 49:25go to bed and stuff, I'd be like, oh no, hi,
- 49:27the wa sho under my blanket?
- 49:29Speaker 2: What? Yeah, well, want's to be shamed about that.
- 49:32Speaker 1: But like what you were saying's like, yeah, that really
- 49:34stuck out because you know, last Wednesday, I was like
- 49:37debating whether or not to go home or whatnot, and then
- 49:39I ended up not going home because some friends were
- 49:41out doing stuff and I went and join them for that.
- 49:44Speaker 2: But I remember being like.
- 49:45Speaker 1: Okay, well, as part of Exodus, I don't eat meat
- 49:49on Wednesdays, if I go home today, like I don't
- 49:51really want to like bother my mom and be like, hey,
- 49:54I'm not going to eat meat today.
- 49:55Speaker 2: So it's like what do I do? Like do I
- 49:56just eat meat? And like I was like why would I?
- 50:00Speaker 1: I was assuming that I would go home and be
- 50:02like I got to hide and touch I would have
- 50:04to find some excuse to not eat dinner with the family.
- 50:06Speaker 2: It's like, why am I hiding that? Like it'd be
- 50:09perfectly fine.
- 50:10Speaker 1: I could just like, you know, say hey, Mom, I'll
- 50:14have out with dinner and we'll figure out a meatless off.
- 50:16Speaker 2: I mean, it's like that'd be perfectly fine.
- 50:18Speaker 1: It was like it's just so instinctual for me to
- 50:20be like people don't need to know this about me.
- 50:23People don't need to know that I pray, or people
- 50:25don't need to know that I don't need meat on
- 50:27Wednesdays or this or that, and then just hide it
- 50:31because especially something that's like if it affects how you
- 50:34would interact with someone, It's just like, oh, if someone
- 50:37invites you to go to the bars and it's like
- 50:39I'm not allowed to drink alcohol right now, huh, And
- 50:44it's like, well, I don't really want to go to
- 50:46the bar and just not drink alcohol and just be
- 50:48around as you guys.
- 50:49Speaker 5: I was like, no, it's so interesting because the same
- 50:53exact thing happened to me with the meat on Wednesdays
- 50:55for Egspist.
- 50:56Speaker 3: It was not the first week because I was sekh,
- 50:59but after.
- 50:59Speaker 5: That everybody knew that we were doing no meat on
- 51:04Fridays because it was me and my dad and John,
- 51:07one of my other brothers, but they didn't know that
- 51:11we were doing no meal on Wednesdays too. And the
- 51:14first Wednesday, our mom made like I don't know, it
- 51:20was like chicken alfreda or something, which is like my
- 51:22favorite meal in the entire world.
- 51:25Speaker 3: And I got home and I was like, oh, my gosh,
- 51:28you know whatever, I can't eat it.
- 51:32Speaker 5: But I wasn't gonna say anything to her because I
- 51:34know that she knows it's my favorite meal. And our
- 51:38dad apparently said something about like oh when she was
- 51:41in the room, he was like, oh, I can't It
- 51:45sucks that you made chicken on Wednesday because we can't
- 51:48eat it for Exodus, and and I wasn't gonna say anything,
- 51:51but then he did and she responded positively, and she
- 51:54was like, oh, you should have just told me I
- 51:56would have just like made something without meat, And I
- 51:58was like, I don't know why I wasn't saying that, Like,
- 52:01I don't know what kind of reaction I'm expecting them.
- 52:04I'm like, you can't tell your Catholic mom who raised
- 52:07you as a Catholic to do this stuff, that you're.
- 52:09Speaker 3: Not allowed to eat meat today.
- 52:10Speaker 5: It's like, I don't know what I'm expecting, especially because,
- 52:13like you said a minute ago, I've been in the
- 52:16same position where I kind of my entire life have
- 52:18intentionally surrounded myself with people who have similar beliefs. So
- 52:22it's not like I have a ton of interactions with
- 52:26I'm not sure I have interactions a.
- 52:27Speaker 3: Ton of uh.
- 52:31Speaker 5: Experience, like talking to people about that stuff outside of
- 52:33the faith, Like I talked to a lot of Catholics
- 52:35about it.
- 52:37Speaker 3: But the fact that I talk to Catholics.
- 52:39Speaker 5: About it means that I should be even less ashamed
- 52:42of it and I should be even more open about it.
- 52:45But I still find myself being like, Oh, I don't know,
- 52:49should I say.
- 52:50Speaker 3: That, Should I ask my mom to make like.
- 52:53Speaker 5: Mac and cheese, fish sticks or something instead of making
- 52:58meat loaf?
- 53:00Speaker 4: I would say, one thing though, I have heard about
- 53:02like the sacrificial things, like those mortifications are supposed to
- 53:06be for yourselves, So like I think that is a
- 53:09fair thing like that you guys would be concerned about, like,
- 53:12oh well, I don't want to make it an obstacle
- 53:15for somebody else because like it's really just supposed to
- 53:17be a sacrifice for yourself, which is true I have
- 53:19heard before. You can, like in a situation like that,
- 53:23if you want to be like a gracious guest, like
- 53:25it is okay to receive that and recognize like I'm
- 53:29doing this not like oh yeah, I got a break,
- 53:31but more like out of graciousness for the host. So
- 53:35I could see it going eat.
- 53:35Speaker 5: Because that didn't happen at one point where my mom
- 53:38was in the hospital with my little brother, and so
- 53:40somebody brought us dinner and it was like tacos or something,
- 53:43and I was like, you know what, whatever, I'm just
- 53:45gonna eat it.
- 53:46Speaker 1: Yeah, because this person was gracious like that. But the
- 53:49sort of thing is like when I know I would
- 53:51accidentally quote quotation marks put myself in the situation where
- 53:56it's just like do I eat this dinner that mom
- 54:00made that has meet in it or not. And it's
- 54:03like I could have pulled back two hours and and
- 54:06just brought that up and then it would have not
- 54:09been difficult to reorganize that to make it such that
- 54:12wouldn't be a difficulty. And that's not just you know,
- 54:16me flouting, Oh I'm doing this thing. So it's like
- 54:19it is for yourself. But also if you like in
- 54:22looking into the future, it's like aware that I will
- 54:24be putting myself into this situation where I either you know,
- 54:30I'm a disgracious guest on gracious guest, not a gracious guest,
- 54:36or I you know, violate whatever fast I'm holding that day.
- 54:43And it's a personal decision because it's like fasting and whatnot.
- 54:48Those a lot of those things are not obligated to do.
- 54:51So it's like you have your personal decision and you
- 54:53can you can adjust it in times. Yeah, but to
- 54:58just like be aware of that and like you gotta
- 55:00think about that beforehand, because otherwise you'll just be like, well,
- 55:05if I just don't bring it up, then I'm gonna
- 55:07have to be a nice guest, And I do really
- 55:10want that that that chicken alfredo.
- 55:13Speaker 5: Yeah, do you ever feel like it's a problem, uh,
- 55:19not being not feeling ashamed of it, but almost feeling
- 55:23a little bit guilty because Jesus said, when you pray,
- 55:28you go into your inner rooms and you lock the
- 55:30doors or whatever. So do you ever feel like if
- 55:33I bring up the fact that I went to Mass
- 55:36today and I said the Rosary or whatever, and especially
- 55:40if you're talking to other Catholics who might not have
- 55:42done the same, Oh yeah, Like do you ever feel
- 55:45like bringing that up in conversation might make it seem
- 55:48like you're trying to be like up on your.
- 55:51Speaker 3: High horse and like I'm holier than that art kind
- 55:54of thing.
- 55:57Speaker 4: I would say that's where it comes to, like, yeah,
- 56:01just being really aware of yourself and like what your
- 56:04honest intentions are bringing it up. And I would say
- 56:07most times when anybody's brought conversations like that up to me,
- 56:13it's always been inspiring and being like wow, like they're
- 56:17doing that, that's amazing, Like I wonder if I could,
- 56:19like if they make that work with their crazy schedule,
- 56:21maybe I can make it work. So I think more
- 56:23often than not, it's probably Satan trying to prevent us
- 56:27from sharing things that are going to inspire us and
- 56:31be better for us. So I would say, overall, it's
- 56:35just good to share the ways that the Lord has
- 56:37worked in our lives. And I was going to bring
- 56:39that back to the conversation we're having just a bit
- 56:43ago about oh was I going with that? About totally
- 56:55lost in it? Pay somebody else continues what as we.
- 57:00Speaker 3: Talked about it can go through it and think about it.
- 57:04I don't remember five minutes ago.
- 57:07Speaker 4: Oh oh, it was about like why we're so afraid
- 57:10to share things? I think a lot of it. For me,
- 57:14it's a question of like, wow, do I need a
- 57:17deeper conversion of my own heart? Am I convicted myself
- 57:22that this is important, that this is a reality, like
- 57:25that the supernatural reality is more real than the visible reality.
- 57:29And I think that's what it comes back to. Yeah,
- 57:32Like when I'm with a friend who like we're sharing
- 57:35about the faith, we're sharing about our spiritual lives. We're
- 57:37sharing like deep things that like just make it so
- 57:40apparent to me, like, oh my gosh, the Holy Spirit
- 57:42is so alive, Like he is working, he is active,
- 57:44He has changed my life, and like whenever I just
- 57:48feel like actually transformed by the Lord, then like when
- 57:54he does like invite me to share, whether it's to
- 57:59non religious people or to people who raised me Catholic,
- 58:04it just makes it so much easier to be like, well,
- 58:06why wouldn't I share? Like this is so real? But
- 58:10I think when Satan can like sneak in there and
- 58:15like start throwing us those lies of like oh, they
- 58:17don't need to know this about you, like, and it's
- 58:20kind of like hiding the spiritual life, then I think
- 58:23it's harder for other people to recognize it so real
- 58:25because we share so many other parts of reality with
- 58:29each other. But if we're not sharing the spiritual life,
- 58:32it can become invisible. And then when it becomes invisible,
- 58:37that's not very hard to see or like it's hard
- 58:40for us to distinguish between invisibility and imagination, and so
- 58:46then a lot of times it's like, oh, well, I
- 58:48just imagine that, like is it really real?
- 58:53Speaker 5: That actually is basically where I was trying to get
- 58:56the covers. So I'm glad that you brought that up,
- 59:00because the thing about like Satan trying to trick you
- 59:04into being like that's you don't need to talk about that,
- 59:07that's not real. Another one of my favorite quotes is
- 59:10the Devil's greatest trick was making you think it doesn't exist.
- 59:13And so if like you're saying the line between invisible
- 59:17and imaginary is it feels so much thinner than it
- 59:21actually is. And yeah, that's the topic I wanted to
- 59:27get to and again, we could talk about this forever
- 59:29of just like and that's the thing that I've been
- 59:33working through for a long time is when I have
- 59:36those situa, when I'm in those situations asking myself like
- 59:40why are you afraid to share it? Is just because
- 59:42like you think they're not interested or are you like
- 59:44questioning your own kind of questioning yourself and like are
- 59:48you really convinced of that? And it's like then you
- 59:51have the thoughts that come into your head of like, oh,
- 59:53what do I really believe about this? And it's like
- 59:55the devil tries to tempt you, and he tries to
- 59:57trick you and tries to make you question yourself, and
- 59:59that makes so you do not want to share it
- 1:00:00because you're even if you are convinced, there's that little
- 1:00:04seed of doubt and it's like, oh, I don't need
- 1:00:07to share that because like.
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: That that's not as real as the other things. So
- 1:00:12I could share. But yeah, that's that's where I wanted
- 1:00:18to get to go.
- 1:00:19Speaker 5: And I feel like I could talk about that for
- 1:00:20like an hour, but I'm not going to.
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: And there's another way that the devil can get you.
- 1:00:26This was high school Nick versus young college Nick thinking
- 1:00:30he's super smart and intelligent for understanding this. But the
- 1:00:34concept of false humility, that's what I told myself was like,
- 1:00:38why I wasn't tearing It was a false humility. It's
- 1:00:41just like, because you hear the Bible past, just like
- 1:00:43when you fast, do not be like the Pharisees who
- 1:00:47clothe themselves in black cloth and ashes and go about
- 1:00:50wailing and groaning.
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: But instead, you know.
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: Wash your face, present yourself as if you were not fasting,
- 1:00:56because you're not there to make everyone know you're fasting.
- 1:00:59And that's probably And so I'm like, okay, so I'm
- 1:01:01not gonna let anyone know that I'm praying, because like
- 1:01:03that's what Jesus said, when you pray, go into your
- 1:01:05go into the inner room and pray by yourself.
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: It's like you need to have that personal prayer.
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: So it's not the purpose of prayer isn't to let
- 1:01:11other people know that you're praying because you're better than them.
- 1:01:14But then there's that false humility of taking it too far.
- 1:01:18And that's what I was doing. I was like, oh, I.
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: Pray the rosie every day.
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: I'm not going to tell other people about that because
- 1:01:25I don't want them to feel bad that they're not
- 1:01:27doing that. There's also like if I did that, then
- 1:01:30people are like, oh, yeah, I do that every morning
- 1:01:32at like six am. It's like, oh, you don't fall
- 1:01:34asleep pathway through praying the rosie. Oh boy, you've got
- 1:01:37a one up on me. But like that that false
- 1:01:39humility of just feeling like I'm not sharing this because
- 1:01:42I want to be humble, and it's like you're not
- 1:01:45being humbled by lording it over each other, and you're
- 1:01:48on hearts, Like sure, other people don't know that you're
- 1:01:50lording it over them.
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: Other people don't know that you're.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: Just like, yeah, but I've got a better spiritual life
- 1:01:56than you because I do I do this, and and
- 1:01:59like that still like comes up every time, because the
- 1:02:02devil is really good at just wee being into the cracks.
- 1:02:08And you know, pride is the root of all evil
- 1:02:12and it comes up so easily, and it even comes
- 1:02:14up when we are lackadaisical about our humility, when it's
- 1:02:19just like let its slide. And at some point that
- 1:02:21humility might start being a little false and then it
- 1:02:24can get a little worse and it.
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: Can go a lot deeper.
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: And when you were saying it, like you go to
- 1:02:29Mass every day if you can, I remember earlier this semester,
- 1:02:33I was trying. I was going to Mass every day
- 1:02:34because I'm like, I was like, I can do it,
- 1:02:37so like why not? That sounds cool and a lot
- 1:02:39of cool stuff is happening with it. And I haven't
- 1:02:41done it quite as much this past two weeks because
- 1:02:43I'm like prioritizing many different things, like okay, if I
- 1:02:46also need sleeps, then maybe I don't go to the
- 1:02:48seven o'clock Mass.
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: The decisions have to be made every day.
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: If you want to go to a daily Mass, you
- 1:02:54got to work around if you want to make that
- 1:02:55a consistent thing.
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: But I remember talking with people's like.
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: So oh, it's like, what have you been doing like
- 1:03:00spiritual because we talked about that in Exodus and a
- 1:03:02bunch And I'm like, well, I've been going to Mass
- 1:03:04as much as I can, And at that point my
- 1:03:07mind was like, not as much as I can. I've
- 1:03:09been going every day, Like like I was trying to
- 1:03:13hide the fact that I was going every day, maybe
- 1:03:15in this false humility sense, or maybe because I didn't
- 1:03:18want to embarrass someone who's like, but I'm not doing
- 1:03:20that every day. I don't really know why, but it's
- 1:03:22just like using words, it's like I've been going as
- 1:03:25much as I can. I'm not lying there as much
- 1:03:27as I'm able, and I'm able to go every day,
- 1:03:29but it makes me thinks like, oh, I'm going as
- 1:03:30much as I can, like a couple times a week,
- 1:03:33Like there's a big difference there in terms of like intentionality.
- 1:03:37Was going to Mass between like two or three times
- 1:03:40a week and then every day, and then I just
- 1:03:44I just didn't share that.
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: I was like why not.
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: It's like maybe I think I was too scared of
- 1:03:49if I said I'm going every day and they're like, oh,
- 1:03:51so why do you go every day? And like, I
- 1:03:53don't know, it's hard to pay attention in Mass at times.
- 1:04:00Maybe I'm going because I just want to be a
- 1:04:01good Catholic. And maybe maybe it's by going to Mass
- 1:04:03every day that I'll finally unlock the key to understanding
- 1:04:06myself and how to be good. If it is the case,
- 1:04:11it takes a lot more than two months of going
- 1:04:13to mass every day to figure that out. But yeah,
- 1:04:18so just like to just share, to share myself truthfully,
- 1:04:23not to share myself to lord it over others saying ha,
- 1:04:26look at me, I'm so much better than you. Look
- 1:04:28at me fasting when you're not. But also to not
- 1:04:31be like lorded over, to lord it over other people
- 1:04:34in my own heart be like, well, I know you
- 1:04:36can't see me fasting, but I'm fasting so much better
- 1:04:39than you. I was like, obviously we don't think about
- 1:04:42it in that way, but the little bits of that
- 1:04:46kind it kind of your emotions shift towards that just
- 1:04:48a little bit enough for the devil to be like, yeah, yeah,
- 1:04:52that's that's what you wanting, that's what you're doing, and
- 1:04:55then then pull you a little bit further, and at
- 1:04:57some point you get so self involved in it it
- 1:05:00destroys you. As the way to fix that is to
- 1:05:05just share with something, to be real with them.
- 1:05:08Speaker 5: So I guess maybe kind of as a final thing,
- 1:05:14you kind of.
- 1:05:15Speaker 3: Were just saying it, which is what made me think
- 1:05:17of this.
- 1:05:17Speaker 5: But if you had to pick one thing to tell people,
- 1:05:23try to do this or try and work on this.
- 1:05:26If you want to be able to open yourself up
- 1:05:29to more genuine interactions with people, what would that be?
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: It's so hard, I would say for me, I think,
- 1:05:45like what I would tell myself, what should I guess?
- 1:05:47What I would tell other people too, is to just
- 1:05:50like be present. I think sometimes why before when we
- 1:05:55were talking about like being so vulnerable, like white feels
- 1:05:58more vulnerable sometimes to connect with somebody at the rock
- 1:06:02climbing gym rather than connecting with like a friendship friend
- 1:06:06in a very deep way, is because like we don't
- 1:06:09expect to get anything out of that, like if it's
- 1:06:12just a short interaction with somebody. And I think a
- 1:06:15lot of times I am willing to like give people
- 1:06:20a ton of my time if I think they're like
- 1:06:21super cool and if I think like they're going to
- 1:06:24give me something in return, but just being present to
- 1:06:29the person and only trying to receive from them, of
- 1:06:34being like I want to receive you. I want to
- 1:06:36receive you as a person, Like I'm not trying to
- 1:06:39show you how cool I am. I'm not trying to
- 1:06:41impart my wisdom on you. I am not trying to, yeah,
- 1:06:45come away with you thinking more highly of me, Like
- 1:06:47I am here just for you to receive you as
- 1:06:51a child of God, and like I hope to be
- 1:06:53the face of Christ to you and whatever that looks like. So, yeah,
- 1:06:57just trying to see other people the way that God
- 1:07:01sees them, but not expect anything out of that conversation
- 1:07:05other than like to delight in that person for the
- 1:07:07time that God has placed them in front of you.
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: I think that's such a good way of putting as
- 1:07:13like how to be present, because you know, I was
- 1:07:16saying like that's such a really difficult thing, and then
- 1:07:18you say present, like, yeah, I know, there's definitely times
- 1:07:21in which I'm hanging out with this one person like
- 1:07:23something else I'd prefer to be doing, and then I
- 1:07:25lose lose that sense of presence and it's like what
- 1:07:27am I getting out of this right now? It's like
- 1:07:29the delight in the person, And that's such a good thing.
- 1:07:33In order for me to add on a bit of advice,
- 1:07:36I think when you are alone, to look to the
- 1:07:40future as well. So it's like not always be present obviously,
- 1:07:43always be present, even when you're alone. There's ways you
- 1:07:45can be fully present. But like when you are making
- 1:07:49plans or thinking about what you're going to be doing
- 1:07:52in the next couple of days, to like think to
- 1:07:54the future and be like, Okay, if I'm going to
- 1:07:56be hanging out with this one friend, then to mentally
- 1:07:59prepare myself to delide in that person, and to mentally
- 1:08:03prepare myself for the way I have to interact with
- 1:08:05this person because it's a bit different than I have
- 1:08:07to interact with this other person. And to tell myself
- 1:08:12when it comes to interacting with to this person because
- 1:08:14we're good friends, to not think about being elsewhere, to
- 1:08:20not think about, oh, but I would much prefer to
- 1:08:23be doing this thing with this person. It's like, well,
- 1:08:25of course you would, because you're a human person and
- 1:08:28you always this is always something you wanted to be
- 1:08:31doing other than the thing you're doing now, Especially the
- 1:08:34thing you're doing now is a difficult thing, like having
- 1:08:35difficult conversations with people, and it's like to just look
- 1:08:40at the future and prepare yourself to be present. You know,
- 1:08:46I don't know how to explain it besides to prepare
- 1:08:48yourself to be present, look to the future, so in
- 1:08:51the future you can be present.
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: I think I.
- 1:08:54Speaker 5: Would say that you never know anybody until you do,
- 1:08:59so you should always be open to the conversations that God.
- 1:09:03Speaker 3: Gives you the opportunity for.
- 1:09:06Speaker 5: And it might be five minutes, it might be five hours,
- 1:09:10but just be present, be willing to accept whatever the
- 1:09:18other person has to give you, and then be open
- 1:09:22to being honest and vulnerable if the opportunity presents itself.
- 1:09:26You don't have to force that into a conversation where
- 1:09:28it doesn't belong. You don't need to share your deepest,
- 1:09:30darkest secrets if we're talking about the Cardinals game. But
- 1:09:37maybe it's your new best friend. You never know, like
- 1:09:40you could be talking to the person who you're gonna
- 1:09:43talk like a conversation you have tomorrow with the person
- 1:09:47you've never met that could be your best friend for
- 1:09:51the rest of your life, and you might talk to
- 1:09:52them every single day for the rest of your life
- 1:09:54until you die, and you won't know unless you have
- 1:09:56that conversation with them. So yeah, just be open.
- 1:10:02Speaker 3: And I think that's all I have to say. That's
- 1:10:05a really good way of wrapping up.
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: You said something very particularly that I was like, that's
- 1:10:10so cool. I also completely forgot about it.
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: But then I listened back.
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: I'll remember what you never know anyone until you do.
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: Oh, I love good totology. But it's what you said
- 1:10:20right after that.
- 1:10:22Speaker 3: I don't know. We'll figure it out.
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: We'll figure it out.
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: It's the sort of thing is like, I literally I
- 1:10:26was listening so intentively that I forgot what I was
- 1:10:28listening to.
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: I was being present, so I forgot the past, the wording.
- 1:10:35But yeah, thank you for.
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: Listening to us today. Thank you, Liz, for for being
- 1:10:42gracious and coming filling in full some spot for us,
- 1:10:44but not just filling in this spot we've been wanting
- 1:10:46you for a while. Is he really good with questions?
- 1:10:50So I'm gonna end us with a prayer, unless anyone
- 1:10:52has any final thoughts, anything they want to say, all right,
- 1:10:56Name of the Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Emmen, Lord, thank
- 1:10:59you this time for this time together with us friends,
- 1:11:03that this conversation that we have had might might help
- 1:11:08the heart of at least one person, if only one person,
- 1:11:12We would glorify you through the great gifts of our
- 1:11:16presence with each other. And we pray that as we
- 1:11:19look forward into the rest of our lives, that we
- 1:11:24may be present with those around us and share who
- 1:11:26we are, and truly be real with our friends in
- 1:11:31ways that we may not even be able to be
- 1:11:33real with ourselves. We asked this in your name.
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: Amen.
- 1:11:40Speaker 3: Amen.
- 1:11:41Speaker 5: Well, thank you guys for listening, and we will see
- 1:11:44you next time.
- 1:11:45Speaker 3: Next time, peas out
