Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Francesca Rudkin: My take on digital drivers licenses
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Okay, So here is my take around the Digital Services
- 0:03Speaker 1: Minister due to Collins's plan to introduce digital driving licenses
- 0:07Speaker 1: or driver licenses by the end of the year. Okay,
- 0:10Speaker 1: so on its own, you wonder what's the point of
- 0:13Speaker 1: moving in this direction when we have perfectly good driver's
- 0:15Speaker 1: licenses in our back pocket. But it's not really about
- 0:18Speaker 1: the driver's license. It's about creating an app like New
- 0:21Speaker 1: South Wales has, which allows people to do a whole
- 0:24Speaker 1: lot of government related transactions simply and easily from their phones.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Things like your car registration, are you waff paying road
- 0:33Speaker 1: user charges and road tolls, both of which we might
- 0:36Speaker 1: be doing a little bit more of in the future.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Inland revenue and tax payments can be dealt with through it,
- 0:41Speaker 1: dealing with superannuation and benefit payments, even maybe paying parking tickets.
- 0:45Speaker 1: You can do the lot right, which makes sense. We
- 0:49Speaker 1: deal with so much of this online already, why not
- 0:53Speaker 1: put it all in one place. So New South Wales
- 0:57Speaker 1: they rolled out the digital driver's License in two thousand
- 0:59Speaker 1: and nineteen and today over eighty percent of drivers use
- 1:03Speaker 1: their driver's license via the app. It is good to
- 1:07Speaker 1: see though that the Minister acknowledges. We need to have
- 1:09Speaker 1: choice around this. A digital license system can't exclude those
- 1:13Speaker 1: who don't have access to the necessary technology or simply
- 1:16Speaker 1: prefer to keep things offline. Groups like the elderly, rural
- 1:19Speaker 1: communities and areas with poor connectivity and people's low incomes
- 1:23Speaker 1: could be disproportionately affected by a full switch to digital,
- 1:27Speaker 1: So it's good Keywis will be given the choice to
- 1:29Speaker 1: go digital or stay with the plastic. Digital licenses may
- 1:33Speaker 1: be a modern, forward thinking move, but they do come
- 1:36Speaker 1: with privacy risks, and we're just sort of talking about this.
- 1:38Speaker 1: You can put all the security in place you like,
- 1:40Speaker 1: but no system is entirely immune to cyber attacks or
- 1:43Speaker 1: accidental or intentional leaks. As I mentioned, much of what
- 1:48Speaker 1: we do is already online, and I appreciate the IDs
- 1:51Speaker 1: will be decentralized and no data will be stored next
- 1:54Speaker 1: personal information, But as that use of the app increases,
- 1:58Speaker 1: will that remain the case. I am probably sounding a
- 2:01Speaker 1: little paranoid, but after having almost fallen for a sophisticated
- 2:05Speaker 1: scam which used hacked information, I'm not relaxed about the
- 2:09Speaker 1: amount of data I have online. So if we're going
- 2:13Speaker 1: to do this we've got to do it well. This
- 2:14Speaker 1: can't be rushed, and it must be the best version
- 2:17Speaker 1: it can be from the start. So I'm a person
- 2:20Speaker 1: who never buys the first version of a piece of tech.
- 2:23Speaker 1: I always give a provided time to sort out the kinks.
- 2:27Speaker 1: I like to buy the second or third generation version.
- 2:29Speaker 1: And I feel the same about the digital driver's licenses.
- 2:33Speaker 1: I can understand how practical they could be. I can
- 2:36Speaker 1: appreciate how bringing everything together could make dealing with numerous
- 2:39Speaker 1: government departments easier. It will even make creating fake licenses
- 2:43Speaker 1: harder for the kids to get into R and V.
- 2:45Speaker 1: So I'm well up for it as long as I
- 2:48Speaker 1: can make the move when I'm ready for more from
- 2:52Speaker 1: Early Edition with Ryan Bridge. Listen live to news Talks
