- 0:18Speaker 1: Casey Smith and Tyler Jones.
- 0:21Speaker 2: This is rutfresh Radio.
- 0:23Speaker 3: I'm your host, Casey Smith, and the second rut is near.
- 0:28Speaker 3: It may be a fable or it may be real,
- 0:30Speaker 3: but it would seem that hunters around the country are
- 0:34Speaker 3: relying on a second cycle of dose and good weather
- 0:38Speaker 3: to bring the deer in.
- 0:39Speaker 4: This is Retfresh, Let's go. This is rutfresh Radio. I'm
- 0:55Speaker 4: your host, Tyler Jones, and I am sitting here in
- 0:59Speaker 4: a truck with case See Smith. This podcast is brought
- 1:02Speaker 4: to you by First Light. Casey, we are kind of
- 1:05Speaker 4: in a weird long stretch back and forth from lease
- 1:11Speaker 4: to hotel Airbnb. You know, are are staying place Yea
- 1:17Speaker 4: and Man's. It's late in the season, you're tired. It
- 1:22Speaker 4: gets kind of hard to make these thirty to forty
- 1:24Speaker 4: minute trips back and forth. But we are still after it.
- 1:28Speaker 4: We're still having fun, We're still deer hunting. You just
- 1:31Speaker 4: get in that car and get kind of warm and toasty,
- 1:33Speaker 4: and you see I get heavy.
- 1:34Speaker 3: You know, that's why I leave my little dial on
- 1:36Speaker 3: sixty six. You know, it kind of keeps me a
- 1:38Speaker 3: little cooler that way. I'm not quite as sleepy, I
- 1:41Speaker 3: don't think, but maybe I am. I'm not sure. It's
- 1:44Speaker 3: it's kind of weird. We are hunting with a big
- 1:48Speaker 3: camp this week. We got we got some buddies in
- 1:51Speaker 3: to do some hunting. We'll talk about that here a
- 1:52Speaker 3: little bit, but it's seven guys is what we have
- 1:55Speaker 3: right now, between our crew and the friends that are here.
- 1:59Speaker 2: And to how seven guys you.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Can either pay a lot of money for quite a
- 2:04Speaker 3: few motel rooms or you can get a cabin, and
- 2:08Speaker 3: that's what we did. But places that hold seven guys
- 2:12Speaker 3: aren't always right next to where you're hunting. And that's
- 2:14Speaker 3: a good thing, right because you kind of like to
- 2:15Speaker 3: hunt remote places. And uh so it's making us drive
- 2:20Speaker 3: a whole lot. Yeah, we are driving past a lot.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Of interesting things to look at.
- 2:24Speaker 5: I just saw them two sable by the way.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Did you see some tables? See them?
- 2:27Speaker 3: We've seen elam though, we've seen Ibex, We've seen cimeter
- 2:32Speaker 3: horn ORX.
- 2:32Speaker 2: We've seen gimms, buck, I've seen elk, did.
- 2:35Speaker 4: You say, I, yes, I've seen horses. Yeah, it's true,
- 2:39Speaker 4: seen ub Delas, army Dellas. I saw big white tails.
- 2:42Speaker 4: I saw big one this morning, did you I did big?
- 2:46Speaker 4: I saw the one we've been seeing. It's pretty nice.
- 2:48Speaker 4: And then I saw big like kind of looked like
- 2:50Speaker 4: a mainframe a but had a little knife on one side.
- 2:53Speaker 4: Kind of white horn's kind of had that high fence look,
- 2:56Speaker 4: did he? I mean just the white horn.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Sometimes, just for clarification, we are not hunting a high
- 3:02Speaker 3: fence place now, do opposite. Actually, I kind of wish
- 3:06Speaker 3: there's at least a little bit of fence around it.
- 3:07Speaker 3: That way, maybe some people wouldn't be on there when
- 3:09Speaker 3: we're not there. But this you're hearing there, I.
- 3:12Speaker 4: Mean, we're actually hunting an area that I hunted with
- 3:15Speaker 4: my dad probably nearly twenty years ago. And surprisingly there's
- 3:20Speaker 4: a lot more high fences out here than there used
- 3:22Speaker 4: to be. There wasn't any high fenses out here when
- 3:23Speaker 4: we used to on out here, but yeah, there is
- 3:26Speaker 4: now quite a few. I guess not quite a few,
- 3:29Speaker 4: but I mean I think I've seen three or so maybe,
- 3:32Speaker 4: and you know, kind of kind of different. Man, it's different.
- 3:36Speaker 4: It's cool, you know, it's cool to see those animals
- 3:38Speaker 4: and stuff like that. But I was thinking about this
- 3:41Speaker 4: this morning and as I was passing by those high fences,
- 3:46Speaker 4: and I was like, man, you know, one reason I
- 3:48Speaker 4: wouldn't want to high fence, like all things kind of
- 3:50Speaker 4: just level of play and field and whatever. Like, one
- 3:53Speaker 4: reason I wouldn't want to high fence my property is
- 3:56Speaker 4: because I think it is cool to have a deer
- 4:00Speaker 4: show up in the rut and have the opportunity at
- 4:02Speaker 4: least have a deer show up in the rut that
- 4:05Speaker 4: that isn't on your property, right, I don't really want Like,
- 4:09Speaker 4: we've been seeing the same buck several times on this
- 4:12Speaker 4: trip in the same high fens spot. He's got like
- 4:14Speaker 4: a one acre little spot yeah there, and it's kind
- 4:16Speaker 4: of weird. It's like, well, you know, that's that's gonna
- 4:19Speaker 4: be what his spot is. And you're gonna like and
- 4:21Speaker 4: on a hyphen's place, especially out here where it's kind
- 4:24Speaker 4: of opened and there's like, you know, I guess smaller tracks.
- 4:28Speaker 4: When I'm saying that, I mean like two three thousand
- 4:29Speaker 4: acres like you're gonna know what deer on that place. Yeah,
- 4:34Speaker 4: And it's kind of like if you don't have a
- 4:35Speaker 4: deer that excites you, you may not be super excited
- 4:38Speaker 4: to hunt that year, right, Whereas like there's always a
- 4:42Speaker 4: chance if you're on a creek system somewhere or like,
- 4:44Speaker 4: you know, whatever you might be on like even my property,
- 4:47Speaker 4: you know, my personal probably at the house. I hadn't
- 4:49Speaker 4: seen any deer or that all year, but like there's
- 4:51Speaker 4: still a chance, right that in December something ends up
- 4:54Speaker 4: just eating corn, you know, on my property or whatever.
- 4:57Speaker 6: You know.
- 4:58Speaker 3: We got a place near the river where we're it's
- 5:01Speaker 3: a pretty small acreage comparatively to what's out here, but
- 5:03Speaker 3: it's it's all right. It's got a couple spots, it's
- 5:05Speaker 3: got some food on it, We got some feeders, and
- 5:08Speaker 3: it's got a wheat field as well.
- 5:10Speaker 2: And man, it's uh, we might have had a little
- 5:14Speaker 2: success in camp last night. I won't tell you too.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Much about it because that's gonna come out on video
- 5:19Speaker 3: next year. But that deer, I'm pretty sure we don't have.
- 5:24Speaker 3: If we have pictures of him, we don't have many.
- 5:27Speaker 3: And so it's it's that exact thing you're talking about
- 5:29Speaker 3: where that buck.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Showed up. Yep, you know, and we were able to
- 5:35Speaker 2: capitalize on them. We have friends in camp. One of
- 5:37Speaker 2: them is named Leay McClendon. He might know him as
- 5:42Speaker 2: Lay McNasty.
- 5:43Speaker 3: He's the guy who makes real funny Instagram videos about
- 5:47Speaker 3: like teaching and stuff like that.
- 5:48Speaker 5: And it's like, why are you.
- 5:49Speaker 3: Up you know that kind of stuff or or I
- 5:53Speaker 3: don't even literally don't even care, so that's late. And
- 5:56Speaker 3: then we got JP Frantz, who is a Houston astro
- 6:00Speaker 3: picture you might have seen him in.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Some of the playoff baseball stuff.
- 6:04Speaker 5: JP st for Jordan Peterson. Yeah, Georgy Peterson France.
- 6:07Speaker 2: We've got Jordan Peterson in camp. That's what it stood for,
- 6:10Speaker 2: the mustache Man.
- 6:12Speaker 3: And they've been hunting hard man and getting African, having
- 6:16Speaker 3: a lot of good deer encounters. And if you want
- 6:18Speaker 3: to hear more about that, you can tune into the
- 6:19Speaker 3: Element podcast. We'll have a lot of coverage about that.
- 6:23Speaker 3: But today we have got some guys from around the
- 6:28Speaker 3: contrary to give us some Rut fresh reports. I know
- 6:32Speaker 3: it seems late in the year for the Rut and
- 6:34Speaker 3: it is, and to be honest, I'm sure, there's a
- 6:37Speaker 3: lot of y'all that are like, Man, the rut is over,
- 6:39Speaker 3: and it might be for you, But there's a lot
- 6:42Speaker 3: of the country still that has the rut yet to happen.
- 6:45Speaker 3: And then there are parts of the country like where
- 6:47Speaker 3: we're at, where the rut is just kind of winding up.
- 6:50Speaker 3: And then there's still places even further north potentially that
- 6:54Speaker 3: they are experiencing a second rut. And I've seen a
- 6:56Speaker 3: lot about that on social people have been talking about that,
- 6:59Speaker 3: and it was even mentioned some in our interviews this week.
- 7:03Speaker 2: So, Tyler, who do we have this week on a
- 7:06Speaker 2: rough Fresh Radio.
- 7:07Speaker 4: We've got a guy named Brandon Miller who is with
- 7:10Speaker 4: the Everyday outdoors Man. He's up in Pennsylvania, had some
- 7:13Speaker 4: success recently. It's so interesting to me that sometimes people
- 7:17Speaker 4: will shoot bucks this time of year up in the
- 7:20Speaker 4: North and they'll just straight up just losing Antler. They'll
- 7:23Speaker 4: just shet them off as they're running away crazy Like
- 7:26Speaker 4: around here, they're doing some much different higher testosterone things
- 7:30Speaker 4: right now, you know, which I guess is how we
- 7:32Speaker 4: roll in Texas. Nate Creek from identical draw. He's been
- 7:37Speaker 4: in Kansas quite a bit. They got a little bit
- 7:40Speaker 4: of land there, and they've been doing some popk land
- 7:42Speaker 4: hunting too, just kind of depends on what they got
- 7:44Speaker 4: on their property. I think Mark OLiS he's out in
- 7:47Speaker 4: the great state of Alabama, actually, the very crazy rut
- 7:51Speaker 4: state of Alabama. Yes, and he's going to tell us
- 7:53Speaker 4: a little bit about what trail cameras have done. He's
- 7:56Speaker 4: with Moultrie and what trail cameras have done for him
- 7:59Speaker 4: and his you know, opportunities at understanding the rut right
- 8:04Speaker 4: in in that crazy state and figuring that out. And
- 8:06Speaker 4: then we've got our very own Jp Frantz, the Element's
- 8:10Speaker 4: very own.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Wow.
- 8:10Speaker 4: I mean, he wants to be right, that's right. He
- 8:12Speaker 4: wants to be a part of the Element. We're not
- 8:13Speaker 4: gonna let him in just yet. He's gotta he's got
- 8:15Speaker 4: to prove some things first, you know. He he ain't
- 8:18Speaker 4: got the you know, he just he's got he's got
- 8:21Speaker 4: to figure out, you know, how to how to win
- 8:23Speaker 4: that World Series I think, first.
- 8:26Speaker 5: But he'll he'll do it. He'll do it anyway.
- 8:28Speaker 4: JP's out here in Texas, so obviously he's got a
- 8:31Speaker 4: Texas report for you this week, and I'm pretty excited
- 8:34Speaker 4: about all of it.
- 8:35Speaker 5: So let's get to the interviews.
- 8:37Speaker 3: This is Brandon Miller with the every Day Outdoorsman, and
- 8:41Speaker 3: apparently I've seen a picture that leads me to believe
- 8:44Speaker 3: that he's a buckslam full in Pennsylvania.
- 8:46Speaker 2: What's up, dude?
- 8:48Speaker 5: Not too much, not too much at all. Just got
- 8:50Speaker 5: back from the cabin yesterday.
- 8:51Speaker 7: It's later, real nice Pa mountain buck on Friday after
- 8:54Speaker 7: still hunting seven and a half miles.
- 8:56Speaker 3: Oh my goodness. So how far does that put you
- 8:59Speaker 3: away from like the truck or whatever? If you're going
- 9:02Speaker 3: seven and a half miles.
- 9:04Speaker 8: I was two and a half.
- 9:05Speaker 7: Miles from the from the car then, so we had
- 9:07Speaker 7: to pack them out.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Oh okay, just two and a half ain't no big deal, right?
- 9:12Speaker 4: I complained all week about being two and a half
- 9:14Speaker 4: miles from the truck earlier in Oklahoma.
- 9:18Speaker 3: That's awesome, dude, So are you? First off, congratulations on
- 9:23Speaker 3: the knis buck is really cool. You have one of
- 9:25Speaker 3: the coolest orange jackets I've ever seen. Apparently you shot
- 9:29Speaker 3: that deer gun hunting right?
- 9:31Speaker 9: Correct?
- 9:32Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 9:32Speaker 3: And so does the gun season in PA make it
- 9:36Speaker 3: more difficult less difficult to find bucks or how does
- 9:39Speaker 3: that interaction work?
- 9:41Speaker 7: Sometimes it can be a little bit difficult. Especially the
- 9:44Speaker 7: big woods are bear season actually the week before deer season, so.
- 9:48Speaker 8: A lot of guys are in the woods doing bear drives.
- 9:50Speaker 7: And it seems to push these deer deeper and deeper,
- 9:52Speaker 7: which can make it tough. But we work for them
- 9:54Speaker 7: and we try and get on them.
- 9:55Speaker 2: That's cool, dude, apparently y'all.
- 9:57Speaker 3: Y'all, so you have like a team of dude through
- 10:00Speaker 3: a bunch of buddies that kind of all work together
- 10:02Speaker 3: to kind of find the hot spots of deer.
- 10:05Speaker 5: Maybe a little bit.
- 10:06Speaker 7: It's more or less just a couple of guys, but
- 10:09Speaker 7: we kind of still hunt by ourselves and just try
- 10:12Speaker 7: and find them alone, and then if we get on
- 10:14Speaker 7: a bunch of them, we'll kind of collaborate and try
- 10:16Speaker 7: and get on them together.
- 10:17Speaker 5: I got you.
- 10:18Speaker 2: So you said you were still hunting. Is that kind
- 10:19Speaker 2: of the thing to do this time of year.
- 10:21Speaker 8: Yeah, for gun hunting, it's what I typically like to do.
- 10:24Speaker 7: Sometimes I'll do a little bit of stand hunting, but
- 10:26Speaker 7: especially with the snow that we had, it was more
- 10:28Speaker 7: still hunting, just trying to find them.
- 10:30Speaker 4: So if the deer being pushed back farther, is that
- 10:35Speaker 4: helpful for a guy who's willing to put in seven
- 10:37Speaker 4: and a half miles in a day.
- 10:39Speaker 7: Absolutely, I mean, if we can, if we can know
- 10:43Speaker 7: and see the topography that we need to get to,
- 10:45Speaker 7: just looking on maps and trying to find where these
- 10:47Speaker 7: deer are going to be hiding out, it really helps us.
- 10:51Speaker 8: And we're away from that pressure. We don't see anybody else.
- 10:54Speaker 8: And these deer, yes.
- 10:55Speaker 7: They've been pressured there, but they've been there for that
- 10:57Speaker 7: entire rifle season most likely, so they're kind of or
- 11:01Speaker 7: unpressured in those deep areas.
- 11:02Speaker 4: Sure, yeah, So what are you looking for on the
- 11:05Speaker 4: maps that helps you to find those deers? Those deer
- 11:07Speaker 4: this time of year.
- 11:09Speaker 7: Leeward sides, and if the leeward side just happens to
- 11:13Speaker 7: be on a southern side where we have like a
- 11:15Speaker 7: north northwest wind, those deer in those in that southern
- 11:19Speaker 7: exposure just trying to stay warm in that sun. And
- 11:22Speaker 7: if we can find some thick laurel and that's actually
- 11:25Speaker 7: where I shot my buck in thick laurel on the
- 11:27Speaker 7: leeward side, So that's kind of what we're looking for.
- 11:29Speaker 9: That's cool.
- 11:30Speaker 2: So are you seeing any running activity at all right now?
- 11:32Speaker 8: Or is that all long past, and actually that's a
- 11:35Speaker 8: great point.
- 11:36Speaker 7: So when I was still hunting, I caught three different
- 11:39Speaker 7: sets of tracks with blood in them from a dough
- 11:43Speaker 7: that was in heat, and I had a whole bunch
- 11:45Speaker 7: of scrapes opened up in rubs as I was still
- 11:47Speaker 7: hunting as well, and I actually saw the buck and
- 11:48Speaker 7: I couldn't get the shot at that buck, but then
- 11:50Speaker 7: I killed another one. So yeah, we're still seeing some
- 11:53Speaker 7: rud activity. It's not as much, obviously, but it's still happening.
- 11:55Speaker 2: About dude, sounds kind of bucky.
- 11:59Speaker 5: It is the is? The is the leeward side because
- 12:02Speaker 5: it's cold.
- 12:05Speaker 8: More or less.
- 12:05Speaker 7: The leeward side is that's where the wind is pushing
- 12:08Speaker 7: over the top and they're out of the wind. And
- 12:11Speaker 7: the leeward side would also, hopefully if the wind is
- 12:14Speaker 7: out of that north northwest, have that southern exposure to
- 12:17Speaker 7: keep them warm and out of that wind.
- 12:19Speaker 5: Gotcha, is it snowing or has it been snowing up
- 12:21Speaker 5: there much?
- 12:22Speaker 8: We had an inch on Friday, but not a whole
- 12:26Speaker 8: lot of snow.
- 12:27Speaker 4: Okay, so in the next week, what does the weather
- 12:31Speaker 4: look like and how's that going to affect deer?
- 12:34Speaker 8: Right now, it's gonna be typically lows in the.
- 12:38Speaker 7: Thirties and highs in the mid fifties, so it's still
- 12:41Speaker 7: a little bit warm for this time of year. Buck activity, Yeah,
- 12:45Speaker 7: I believe they're going to be on their feet, but
- 12:47Speaker 7: it's gonna be right at daylight and right at dark,
- 12:49Speaker 7: and I think you're gonna have to go find them.
- 12:51Speaker 7: I don't think you're gonna be able to set up trees,
- 12:53Speaker 7: stand and get on them unless you know exactly where
- 12:55Speaker 7: Buck's patterning. It's gonna be a little tough to find them.
- 12:57Speaker 2: I like the aggression, man.
- 12:59Speaker 3: So on a scale of one to ten for the
- 13:00Speaker 3: next week, if you had to rank buck movement in Pennsylvania,
- 13:03Speaker 3: what would you call.
- 13:04Speaker 7: It, I'd probably say a three to three and a
- 13:07Speaker 7: half and I would say, if you're gonna find one here,
- 13:09Speaker 7: you're gonna have to be aggressive and.
- 13:10Speaker 8: Go get them.
- 13:11Speaker 5: Shoot.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Man, that is a good tactic.
- 13:13Speaker 6: I like it.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Aggression. It's good stuff. Congrats on the big buck, dude,
- 13:16Speaker 2: and I hope you have a great rest of the season.
- 13:19Speaker 8: Hey, thanks, guys, appreciate it.
- 13:22Speaker 4: I've got Nate Crick from Identical draw here. Nate has
- 13:25Speaker 4: been out just hammering in Kansas this year quite a bit, Nate.
- 13:29Speaker 4: What's going on, man, hey Tyler?
- 13:32Speaker 6: Yeah, Man, November was great, and I can't believe it
- 13:36Speaker 6: is December. Like the late season just snuck up like
- 13:40Speaker 6: so fast. But I love a lot of some things
- 13:43Speaker 6: about late season. But I'm also I always have to
- 13:46Speaker 6: miss the rut a little bit during this time of
- 13:47Speaker 6: the year.
- 13:48Speaker 4: Oh for sure. Man, it starts to starts to hurt
- 13:51Speaker 4: your heart a little bit, you know. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 13:54Speaker 4: for sure. So what what the deer doing out there
- 13:57Speaker 4: right now? Man?
- 13:59Speaker 6: I've seen like a pretty big change in the last week.
- 14:04Speaker 6: So I shot a buck on some walking hunting in
- 14:09Speaker 6: Kansas on November twenty eighth, and it was just a
- 14:12Speaker 6: quick hanging hunt. Scatted on the maps, got up in
- 14:15Speaker 6: the saddle, thought it'd be just a good just traffic area,
- 14:21Speaker 6: but also had some bigger timber around there, so just
- 14:24Speaker 6: hoping that maybe there'd be like one last dough that
- 14:29Speaker 6: would get some get some movement in the area. And
- 14:31Speaker 6: I heard heard drunks to the south, hit some pretty
- 14:35Speaker 6: hit some drunks back. Nothing happened for fifteen minutes, and
- 14:38Speaker 6: actually hit the antlers together really lightly. I don't do
- 14:41Speaker 6: like any big like rattling sequences this time of the year,
- 14:45Speaker 6: even late November. I just hit him really lightly so
- 14:47Speaker 6: that year could hear them. And sure enough, ten minutes
- 14:49Speaker 6: later I saw a big old five by five walking
- 14:52Speaker 6: straight through the grass to me, and he came to
- 14:55Speaker 6: twelve yards. So, I mean, November twenty eighth, still like
- 15:00Speaker 6: working the calls. Still the calls are still good. But
- 15:03Speaker 6: in the last week I've seen a huge shift. I mean,
- 15:06Speaker 6: the deer movement has, at least in our part of Kansas,
- 15:08Speaker 6: has basically shut down. We haven't We've got cameras all
- 15:13Speaker 6: over our private eighty acres and we haven't had a
- 15:18Speaker 6: mature buck on camera in probably like ten days. It's
- 15:22Speaker 6: just like, I think it's full on recovery mode. I
- 15:25Speaker 6: think those bucks are just absolutely exhausted from an entire
- 15:29Speaker 6: month of just chasing and doing buck things. So I
- 15:34Speaker 6: mean the buck eye shot was just skin and bones.
- 15:36Speaker 6: I mean he was just absolutely worn down. So I
- 15:39Speaker 6: feel like there's kind of in between from the rut
- 15:42Speaker 6: till they're not like fully just like food heavy, yet
- 15:45Speaker 6: they're just like in recovery mode. They're just ice in
- 15:49Speaker 6: the wounds, just kind of laying low and I feel
- 15:51Speaker 6: like that's kind of what I felt this last week.
- 15:53Speaker 3: So so this time of year in that part of
- 15:56Speaker 3: the country, the deer become pretty agriculturally depended. Is seems like,
- 16:00Speaker 3: you know, that's where their main food sources are. How
- 16:03Speaker 3: do you feel like the agriculture is this year.
- 16:06Speaker 8: I feel like it's pretty much the same.
- 16:08Speaker 9: I mean in our area.
- 16:10Speaker 6: Of course, like most Midwest everything gets picked to the bone.
- 16:14Speaker 6: So it's like, I mean there's still a lot of
- 16:16Speaker 6: food sources around there. We're lucky on our on our
- 16:20Speaker 6: parcel to be able to leave some standing food, which
- 16:23Speaker 6: definitely helps us later in the year. But right now,
- 16:27Speaker 6: it's just it's really interesting, like I almost feel like
- 16:30Speaker 6: you still have to like if you're gonna try to
- 16:32Speaker 6: kill the mature buck this time of the year, you
- 16:34Speaker 6: still kind of have to hunt them, like almost like
- 16:37Speaker 6: an early season cold from like you've got to get
- 16:41Speaker 6: really tied to that betting and just hope they move
- 16:42Speaker 6: a little bit. And that's what that's what this kid
- 16:45Speaker 6: of the year. I feel like they're just laying low
- 16:47Speaker 6: in their safest spots, and so like if you're gonna
- 16:49Speaker 6: sit a food source right now where two weeks from
- 16:52Speaker 6: now late December, if the tenths are good, like you'll
- 16:54Speaker 6: have hopefully a pile of deer in your food where
- 16:57Speaker 6: right now, I don't think they're there yet. I don't
- 16:58Speaker 6: think they're really willing to to make that movement happen yet.
- 17:02Speaker 6: But I mean there's food around, definitely. But I was
- 17:05Speaker 6: actually driving basically like north central Kansas.
- 17:08Speaker 2: I drove like from.
- 17:10Speaker 6: North central Kansas to like south south central Kansas a
- 17:14Speaker 6: few mornings ago, and I did not see a deer
- 17:18Speaker 6: for like the first two hours of the drive during primetime,
- 17:21Speaker 6: like before the sun was up until then. So I'm like, dude,
- 17:25Speaker 6: everything's just taken a full on reset right now.
- 17:27Speaker 4: I think it's wild. Answer, it's a weird thing. We've
- 17:29Speaker 4: seen some similar stuff where we've been hunting now and
- 17:31Speaker 4: then in the next week or so. Do you expect
- 17:33Speaker 4: things to change a little bit based on weather or
- 17:35Speaker 4: anything like that, or is it look pretty stagnant the weather.
- 17:39Speaker 6: The weather's stagnant. But I do have hopes that the
- 17:43Speaker 6: deer are going to just be like having to get
- 17:45Speaker 6: to the food source. I think they're just gonna have
- 17:47Speaker 6: to get there because they're hurting right now. They need
- 17:50Speaker 6: that so I'm hoping that the food sources.
- 17:53Speaker 9: Do pop on.
- 17:54Speaker 6: Usually it seems like usually like late teens to the
- 17:59Speaker 6: twentieest time of December. Always it always starts to pop on.
- 18:03Speaker 6: So I'm hoping that, Yeah, the next week or so,
- 18:06Speaker 6: it's gonna it's gonna change up for sure.
- 18:08Speaker 5: Awesome, man, Well, thanks for the report.
- 18:10Speaker 4: Before I let you go, Man, on a scale of
- 18:12Speaker 4: one to ten, what do you think buck movement will
- 18:14Speaker 4: be like in the next week or so?
- 18:17Speaker 10: Uh?
- 18:19Speaker 6: Man, I this might be kind of depressing, but I'd
- 18:21Speaker 6: say like maybe four or five out of ten.
- 18:23Speaker 5: Yeah, No, we got to have real, real reports, man,
- 18:25Speaker 5: And I appreciate the honesty. Man.
- 18:27Speaker 2: I feel like that's where we're gonna be good.
- 18:29Speaker 4: Good, Well that's cool man. Well, so I guess the
- 18:32Speaker 4: idea is just stay in the woods and here in
- 18:35Speaker 4: the next you know, week or two, man, things are
- 18:37Speaker 4: gonna start popping on food sources. So appreciate the report,
- 18:41Speaker 4: and I hope you guys have a great rest of
- 18:42Speaker 4: your season.
- 18:43Speaker 5: Man.
- 18:44Speaker 9: Yep, thank you guys.
- 19:00Speaker 2: This is my buddy Mark Olss.
- 19:01Speaker 3: He works from Moultrie Mobile and more importantly, he is
- 19:04Speaker 3: a white tailed deer hunter from the state of Alabama.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Mark, what's going on?
- 19:09Speaker 8: Hey, guys, It's it's going good here.
- 19:11Speaker 6: Man.
- 19:11Speaker 10: We're uh, we're you know, getting ready for Christmas with
- 19:14Speaker 10: the family and uh doing a little hunting.
- 19:17Speaker 8: And stuff like that. So it's a it's a good
- 19:18Speaker 8: time of year.
- 19:19Speaker 5: Heck.
- 19:20Speaker 2: Yeah, man, it's nice to have that cooler weather finally
- 19:22Speaker 2: roll down in the South, you know.
- 19:23Speaker 8: Oh man, it's uh.
- 19:25Speaker 10: We we've had a great we had a pretty uh
- 19:27Speaker 10: severe storm system come through, you know, like early Saturday morning.
- 19:31Speaker 8: Uh, and and now that cold wind.
- 19:34Speaker 10: Is behind it, so it's it's been pushing in here
- 19:37Speaker 10: hard since yesterday.
- 19:38Speaker 8: So it's feeling good.
- 19:39Speaker 6: Now.
- 19:39Speaker 2: That's cool man. Have you been out in the woods
- 19:41Speaker 2: sum chasing deer round?
- 19:43Speaker 10: Yeah, I've been out a little bit here lately, uh,
- 19:46Speaker 10: and and been out hunting, and you know, it's it's
- 19:50Speaker 10: it's kind of uh that pattern, our rut is or
- 19:54Speaker 10: for most of the state is coming up. But it's
- 19:56Speaker 10: kind of like you know, hitting the systems. You know,
- 19:58Speaker 10: do you do you have cool weather a warm because
- 20:00Speaker 10: we've had plenty of warm weather and stuff like that
- 20:04Speaker 10: movement wasn't that great And then when you had those
- 20:07Speaker 10: cooler tempts had some good movements. So it's it's kind
- 20:10Speaker 10: of been up and down on the deer movement now
- 20:14Speaker 10: now mature buck movement had been very nocturnal still really.
- 20:19Speaker 4: So my yeah, tell me more about the rut, man.
- 20:21Speaker 4: I know that Alabama is one that a lot of
- 20:23Speaker 4: people have questions about. Talk a little bit about that,
- 20:26Speaker 4: and you said it's coming up for most of the state.
- 20:28Speaker 4: Talk about when that is too.
- 20:31Speaker 8: Yeah, So Alabama, it's pretty cool.
- 20:33Speaker 10: And it all dates back to like the restocking efforts
- 20:36Speaker 10: back in the fifties and sixties. You know, deer were
- 20:39Speaker 10: brought from Michigan, Wisconsin, different places, and so Alabama has
- 20:45Speaker 10: a crazy rut. It's not all at one time. In Alabama,
- 20:49Speaker 10: they're deer rutting from mid November through mid February, and
- 20:56Speaker 10: you can find pockets. There's little zones. They may only
- 20:59Speaker 10: be like half a county big where they had Michigan deer,
- 21:03Speaker 10: and those deer are rutting in November like most of
- 21:06Speaker 10: the country. And then you know where I'm at, you know,
- 21:10Speaker 10: really Christmas is kind of a peak rut. So right
- 21:14Speaker 10: here where I live, man, the bucks are really starting
- 21:17Speaker 10: to move, starting to see new bucks show up, starting
- 21:21Speaker 10: to see those scrapes and rubs.
- 21:23Speaker 8: So there's some really increased activity going on, but the
- 21:27Speaker 8: dos are still grouped up.
- 21:29Speaker 10: The bucks are kind of just moving roam and looking
- 21:33Speaker 10: and a little sparring going on. They're not just all
- 21:35Speaker 10: out going crazy by any means yet.
- 21:38Speaker 2: So I know chruck camers are a big part of
- 21:40Speaker 2: what you do.
- 21:41Speaker 3: Are you really kind of paying attention to the cameras
- 21:44Speaker 3: to get a feeling for what the deer are doing
- 21:46Speaker 3: right now?
- 21:47Speaker 10: I am, especially for some certain spots. So here here
- 21:51Speaker 10: by the house, I've got a very steep ridge. It's
- 21:54Speaker 10: really thick, I mean really really hard to access, and
- 21:59Speaker 10: it's more a bedding area, and so I don't I
- 22:02Speaker 10: stay out of there.
- 22:03Speaker 8: I put my cameras in there. They're running.
- 22:06Speaker 10: There's these uh there's some small benches as you go
- 22:10Speaker 10: up that ridge, and those are their travel corridors. Now
- 22:14Speaker 10: I am starting to see some mature bucks moving in
- 22:18Speaker 10: the daylight on those on those sections of those benches,
- 22:23Speaker 10: and it's because they're in that tight cover.
- 22:25Speaker 8: So so those deer moving, but it's just not ready yet.
- 22:29Speaker 10: So I am really watching the cameras because I don't
- 22:33Speaker 10: want to go in there and blow things out until
- 22:36Speaker 10: it's time to really get in.
- 22:37Speaker 8: There and hunt.
- 22:38Speaker 10: So it's it's coming, but we're probably still a couple
- 22:42Speaker 10: weeks off from where I would even try to enter there.
- 22:44Speaker 8: And I will use my cameras to tell me when
- 22:47Speaker 8: the time's right.
- 22:48Speaker 5: Real quick talk about what what you'll see on the
- 22:51Speaker 5: camera that will tell you when the time's ride.
- 22:53Speaker 10: Well, it'll I'll start seeing those bucks move more consistently
- 22:58Speaker 10: in the daylight mornings and evenings, and then they really
- 23:02Speaker 10: will start cruising those things all day long.
- 23:06Speaker 8: So when I start seeing that increase, like for example, I.
- 23:10Speaker 10: Had two really nice bucks on Thursday moved through about
- 23:15Speaker 10: eight thirty in the morning, and that's great, But those
- 23:18Speaker 10: bucks came from somewhere else. They they're not deer that
- 23:21Speaker 10: I've had on camera, so they're they're doing their thing
- 23:24Speaker 10: like Roman right now. When when they really start hitting
- 23:28Speaker 10: those cameras consistently, that's when I'm gonna make my move.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Sure.
- 23:32Speaker 4: Sure, So in the next week or so, what do
- 23:37Speaker 4: you propose that deer movement or buck movement rather will
- 23:40Speaker 4: be like on a scale of one to ten, if
- 23:42Speaker 4: you had to guess, Well.
- 23:44Speaker 10: You know, personally, I think it's it's probably gonna be
- 23:48Speaker 10: maybe in that seven to eight range.
- 23:51Speaker 3: That's good.
- 23:52Speaker 10: And the reason I said, now that's not that's not
- 23:55Speaker 10: going to be well, you said buck deer movement in general.
- 23:59Speaker 10: You know, I'm gonna drop it a little on Bucks
- 24:01Speaker 10: because maybe around six because they're just and again again
- 24:04Speaker 10: in this state, it's all about where you're hunting. So
- 24:09Speaker 10: I don't want to say that because there's gonna be
- 24:10Speaker 10: places that are cranking and those guys are going to
- 24:13Speaker 10: see the movement. But across the broad stroke of it, uh,
- 24:18Speaker 10: you know you're going to start the bucks are starting
- 24:21Speaker 10: to move. We've got the cool weather. We've got stable
- 24:23Speaker 10: weather this week that's going to be favorable. I've always
- 24:28Speaker 10: noticed deer movement around here is best, you know, morning
- 24:31Speaker 10: and evening when you've got those favorable conditions, just cool mornings,
- 24:36Speaker 10: you know, and things like that.
- 24:38Speaker 8: So I think this is a great week to be hunting.
- 24:41Speaker 10: It's again, stable weather, deer getting ready, multi mobile, We've
- 24:46Speaker 10: got on there a game plan. It's a predictive deer
- 24:50Speaker 10: movement model. So I before the call, I've plugged that
- 24:53Speaker 10: in just to kind of see what it was saying,
- 24:56Speaker 10: and it's actually showing some pretty good movement patterns for
- 24:59Speaker 10: this week, and and that uses trail cam data multi
- 25:03Speaker 10: mobile trail cam data to track just buck movements. So
- 25:06Speaker 10: if someone has multi mobile, I encourage them go.
- 25:10Speaker 8: Check out that new feature.
- 25:12Speaker 2: That's pretty snazzy.
- 25:13Speaker 3: Man.
- 25:13Speaker 2: I'm actually gonna do that right now. I just say
- 25:15Speaker 2: that check out Mark. We appreciate the report, man, Thanks dude.
- 25:19Speaker 2: I hope you have a great rut.
- 25:22Speaker 8: Hey, thanks guys. Good luck to you guys as well.
- 25:26Speaker 3: This is JP Frantz. He is a Houston Astros picture.
- 25:30Speaker 3: But more importantly, he is hunting with us in Texas.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Jp, what's happening, doggs?
- 25:34Speaker 5: What's going on?
- 25:35Speaker 9: Appreciate the invide guys.
- 25:36Speaker 2: For sure.
- 25:36Speaker 3: Man, It's been a good time to sit he around
- 25:39Speaker 3: here and laugh and eat food with you. But deer
- 25:42Speaker 3: hunting is what we're actually here for. Been did a
- 25:43Speaker 3: little bit of that, huh for sure? This's your first
- 25:45Speaker 3: time dear hunting Texas.
- 25:47Speaker 9: Second? Second? Second?
- 25:48Speaker 2: Okay, got you. I don't want I'm gonna ask you
- 25:50Speaker 2: which one was better, because I don't want to know
- 25:54Speaker 2: you've been out in the woods with a couple of
- 25:56Speaker 2: our smelly camera guys. I'm gonna ask you what the
- 25:59Speaker 2: hunting has been like which one is, uh, smellier?
- 26:04Speaker 9: Well, I've had more sits with Greg, so I've had
- 26:06Speaker 9: more time to smell him. Smell him. How those gone
- 26:12Speaker 9: for you?
- 26:13Speaker 11: It's gone great, man, that's the It's the first time
- 26:15Speaker 11: I've been hunting with a camera guy. I was kind
- 26:17Speaker 11: of interested to see how it was gonna work having
- 26:20Speaker 11: two guys in a tree.
- 26:21Speaker 9: No, it's been awesome, man.
- 26:23Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, cool.
- 26:24Speaker 5: This is their movement.
- 26:25Speaker 11: Like I mean, this morning was probably the best morning
- 26:27Speaker 11: we had. We saw about ten deer and you want
- 26:30Speaker 11: to move right, yeah, yeah, sorry, Yeah, we saw about
- 26:38Speaker 11: eight or nine dose young buck and then what looked
- 26:40Speaker 11: like a pretty decent eight off behind the cuitar tree.
- 26:44Speaker 9: But they just they stayed closer to that river never
- 26:46Speaker 9: came in.
- 26:47Speaker 5: Have you hunted feeders before, Yes, yeah, yeah.
- 26:50Speaker 9: I mean I'm from Louisiana.
- 26:51Speaker 5: That's all we think, right, Yeah, that's what we Texas. Yeah,
- 26:55Speaker 5: it's uh, it's it can be challenging.
- 26:57Speaker 4: And you were talking you in case you were talking
- 26:58Speaker 4: about this earlier, but uh, deer just come from everywhere
- 27:02Speaker 4: sometimes when you're coming to a feeder, because it's just
- 27:04Speaker 4: like they hub into this one area, right, right, and so,
- 27:08Speaker 4: but as far as like, as far as like buck
- 27:10Speaker 4: movement goes, I mean you're seeing quite a few dos.
- 27:13Speaker 5: Are you.
- 27:14Speaker 4: Do you feel like bucks are cruising right now? Are
- 27:17Speaker 4: they in lockdown? What do you what are your assumptions
- 27:19Speaker 4: about that?
- 27:20Speaker 11: I mean, it's it's from what I've seen that that
- 27:23Speaker 11: that younger buck that came in, he just looked like
- 27:25Speaker 11: he was paying on mine to anything, just went straight
- 27:27Speaker 11: to the corn. But every other deer we've seen it,
- 27:32Speaker 11: he's looks like he's just been cruising up and down
- 27:33Speaker 11: that river. Like this morning we had that eight point
- 27:37Speaker 11: I think what we, what me and everything happened is
- 27:39Speaker 11: that he may be caught one of those doughs that
- 27:42Speaker 11: went and maybe followed them.
- 27:45Speaker 9: And they had those two single dear.
- 27:46Speaker 11: I couldn't tell if they were bucks or not, but
- 27:48Speaker 11: I mean they were doing the same thing, cruising up.
- 27:50Speaker 9: And down that river.
- 27:51Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 27:51Speaker 4: I personally, I haven't really noticed anything chase at all. No,
- 27:56Speaker 4: just some kind of nudgeing and stuff. None of that
- 27:58Speaker 4: nose down like that crazy. We've seen some of that.
- 28:01Speaker 4: We have on Yeah, there's an impending rain front coming
- 28:05Speaker 4: in for you know, the later part of this week.
- 28:07Speaker 4: How do you think that's going to affect the deer?
- 28:10Speaker 9: It should get them up and moving.
- 28:12Speaker 11: Like I said, we had that front roll through with
- 28:14Speaker 11: what a day and a half ago, and it's the
- 28:17Speaker 11: movement's been picking up since that, So I mean, I
- 28:19Speaker 11: think it's gonna get pretty good depending. I don't know
- 28:24Speaker 11: what stage of the rut we're at right now being
- 28:27Speaker 11: in in West Texas. Do y'all know if it's happened.
- 28:31Speaker 3: And here's the deal with what I've noticed about Texas
- 28:34Speaker 3: is like there are peak rut dates, but that peak
- 28:36Speaker 3: is not as high and the mountain is wider, you
- 28:38Speaker 3: know what I mean. So, like I think right now
- 28:41Speaker 3: there's chasing that's happening that we're not seeing, and then
- 28:44Speaker 3: there are bucks lockdown with doors, which we have seen,
- 28:46Speaker 3: and then there are some bucks or dose that just
- 28:50Speaker 3: don't even care too much, you know. So I think
- 28:53Speaker 3: there's a lot of that going on, and it seems
- 28:55Speaker 3: as if you're just waiting on the right one to
- 28:57Speaker 3: show up, right.
- 28:58Speaker 11: Yeah, definitely, I think the cruising aspect because I mean, like,
- 29:02Speaker 11: like we've said, the couple of days we've been here,
- 29:05Speaker 11: not a lot of bucks have gone to the feeders.
- 29:07Speaker 9: They've kind of really passed them up and just not
- 29:09Speaker 9: minded them.
- 29:10Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, I think that.
- 29:11Speaker 4: I mean, I think that's definitely a key thing, right,
- 29:13Speaker 4: Like the bucks don't seem to be super interested in
- 29:17Speaker 4: food source essentially, they're just they're trying to find those.
- 29:19Speaker 3: So yeah, so you're actually making some moves to not yep,
- 29:24Speaker 3: to kind of change things up.
- 29:25Speaker 2: What's what's your thoughts on that?
- 29:27Speaker 11: Like we were saying on that one spot we were hunting,
- 29:31Speaker 11: there's just too many ways for those deer to access
- 29:33Speaker 11: that feeder, and it's just whichever way the wind's blowing,
- 29:36Speaker 11: they can get downhill from any angle.
- 29:39Speaker 9: So yeah, we're moving. What's it?
- 29:41Speaker 11: It's probably a good it's probably a mile probably a
- 29:44Speaker 11: mile away, same river system, so I mean we may
- 29:48Speaker 11: or may not see some of those bucks crews in
- 29:49Speaker 11: that river, but yeah, the plan is to just kind
- 29:53Speaker 11: of limit that access to that feeder and try to
- 29:55Speaker 11: get them to come in all similar directions.
- 29:58Speaker 2: Yeah, sweet man.
- 29:59Speaker 3: So if you had to rank the buck movement on
- 30:01Speaker 3: a scale of one to ten for the week that's
- 30:03Speaker 3: coming up here, what would you think it would be?
- 30:07Speaker 11: I was gonna say between like a six and eight,
- 30:08Speaker 11: So I'll go seven. Just for the fact that I'm
- 30:13Speaker 11: never hunted here.
- 30:14Speaker 9: I don't know.
- 30:15Speaker 11: I don't know how it all really works optimistic, but yeah,
- 30:23Speaker 11: it's I think we were looking at it. They had
- 30:26Speaker 11: another front rolling through at the end of next week,
- 30:28Speaker 11: so that should definitely pick some stuff up.
- 30:30Speaker 2: Yeah, the conditions, man, I appreciate your perspective on things. Man.
- 30:34Speaker 2: Glad you here home with this.
