Transcript
- 0:05Good afternoon. Welcome in.
- 0:07Miller and Condon on the air with you here on a Thursday as
- 0:11we talk the world of sports. Taking you up until 2:00 this
- 0:15afternoon before Lucas got you covered off the bench from 2:00
- 0:19until 5:00 and overtime. Iowa gets you home from 5:00
- 0:23until 6:00 here today. Coming up on the guest list this
- 0:26afternoon, we're going to talk some Major League Baseball.
- 0:29Matt Snyder, our weekly guest during baseball season is going
- 0:32to stop in. We'll get his perspective on the
- 0:34pre season pitchers and catchers getting ready to report.
- 0:37The schedule is out for the World Baseball Classic.
- 0:40Yes, it is back for another year.
- 0:42We will talk about that coming up here at 12:30 with Matt
- 0:46Snyder from CBS. And we're hitting CBS hard
- 0:48apparently as we'll go back to the well again.
- 0:51Matt Norlander is going to join us from CBS Sports.
- 0:54We'll get his perspective on college basketball, take a look
- 0:56at the national scene and we'll also localize things as well.
- 1:00But before that, it is not just me today and a couple of guests
- 1:03know we bring in yet another Co host for the day and our
- 1:08revolving door as Ken is on vacation here for the next
- 1:11couple of weeks. And today in the hot seat he is
- 1:14Todd Brommelkamp. Todd, good to see you.
- 1:17I feel like I should be named Matt like I need to change my
- 1:20name for. The Day and we're for CBS.
- 1:23Yeah, I no comment on that one. I'm, I'm happy where we're at.
- 1:29I know we're going to get to that later on, but I'm happy to
- 1:32be filling in for Ken and hopefully he's enjoying his
- 1:34vacation where he's at. Yes, down in South Carolina
- 1:37usually goes West, goes out to California for his winter break,
- 1:41but this year decided to go the other way to the other coast and
- 1:44hanging out in South Carolina. And I can only imagine the
- 1:47trials and tribulations because Ken, he is not an easy traveler.
- 1:51He is driving with his wife and their dog.
- 1:54So there's gonna be stories when he gets back to his.
- 1:56It's never smooth sailing with Ken Miller.
- 1:59What he goes at I. Rifled.
- 2:00I rifled through my closet and I couldn't.
- 2:02I don't own any Winnipeg Jets stuff so so I couldn't honor him
- 2:07today. So I've got my best Scott Hall
- 2:09T-shirt on. OK.
- 2:11Ready to go? Absolutely.
- 2:12Well, it's good to hear you here in my ears.
- 2:15And I'm sure for our listeners that know Todd Brommelkamp, if
- 2:19you don't know Todd for a long time was on the radio over in
- 2:22Eastern Iowa, over in Cedar Rapids and certainly a guy that
- 2:26I've gotten to know, Todd, gotten to know you throughout
- 2:28the years, what you did over in that market.
- 2:30And now we're also in that market with our signal over at
- 2:3395.7 along with an Iowa City on KXIC.
- 2:38Todd, you're back on the microphone, but you've been
- 2:40doing some other things. So let the people, let the
- 2:42listeners out there kind of know what you've been up to here
- 2:44recently. Well, I'm kind of reinventing
- 2:48myself at the age of 45, which I thought was going to be a little
- 2:51difficult after I got let go back in August and now I'm
- 2:57helping sell cars at Castle Motors here in Cedar Rapids and
- 3:01absolutely loving it. Complete 180 at at 45, I I
- 3:06didn't know whether it would be possible or not, but thanks to
- 3:09some of my friends in the sports media and including you I I
- 3:12still get to dip my toe in the water every once in a while.
- 3:15So get to and remember what it was like back in the old days
- 3:19when I was on the radio. And I wouldn't say everybody's
- 3:21happy to hear me back today, but I'm sure there's, I'm sure
- 3:24there's some folks listening in. And that was, you know, the one
- 3:27thing that I really miss about doing radio every day.
- 3:30And they're, the longer I've, I've been out of it, the less I
- 3:34miss really the one thing that I truly, the one thing that I
- 3:37truly miss is the interaction with the listeners.
- 3:40And I think, you know, I think there's a lot of people that are
- 3:42worried about AI and, and where we're going and we're all going
- 3:45to get replaced everything. And that was the one thing is
- 3:49that human interaction. I think it's going to take a
- 3:52long time to figure out how to replace that.
- 3:55So I miss the listeners. I miss getting to interact with
- 3:58them on the text line and in real time.
- 4:01And podcasts are great, but if there's no way to interact
- 4:06during them. So I, I still think there's a
- 4:09place for radio and, and I love the fact that you guys are
- 4:13statewide and, and happy to be a little part of it for today and,
- 4:16and I think next week as well, unless that's a secret that
- 4:19wasn't supposed to let. Out.
- 4:20No, no, you're good. You're good.
- 4:21Todd will also be back with us next Thursday as well as that's
- 4:24his off day. So you get that midweek break
- 4:26and well, normally we do lock that.
- 4:28Off work. You're making me work on my.
- 4:30Well, nobody's making me work. No, But this is supposed to be
- 4:32my day off. Yeah.
- 4:34Your day off and you are hanging out with us for a couple hours
- 4:36and we're better. Hold on, I got to know.
- 4:38I got the guy on the other line about some white walls.
- 4:41Didn't even know they still had a team.
- 4:43Little Major League for you, Todd.
- 4:46Volvo I'm ready for. Baseball, man, I had let's go I
- 4:49Matt Snyder was with me on the radio every once in a while over
- 4:52here in Cedar Rapids. So a great guest and looking
- 4:54forward to talk to a little Cubs baseball and Cardinals and and
- 4:58all things baseball with him coming up.
- 5:00We will get to that, but we kick off today's program with of
- 5:03course the top of the fold item and that is the Iowa Hawkeyes.
- 5:07After a six game-winning streak, they go down last night at
- 5:10Maryland and just a performance that leaves you scratching your
- 5:14head and the way that that one played out.
- 5:16A Maryland team, though they had won their last time out against
- 5:18Minnesota was 2 and 10 in the Big 10.
- 5:22A team that doesn't shoot it very well.
- 5:23There was nobody in the building.
- 5:24I mean, you talk about that made some of the Carver crowds late
- 5:27under Fran look like it was an absolute party compared to what
- 5:30was there last night in College Park.
- 5:32Yet I would couldn't get it done.
- 5:34A couple of things that jumped out to me #1 what's the defense?
- 5:38And it was the defense and not the 12 fouls against the final
- 5:41two over the last 14 fouls that were called against Iowa, like
- 5:44they were putting by the line late.
- 5:46I I don't think that there was anything.
- 5:48Did search get clobbered on that play on the goal 10?
- 5:50Yeah, he did. But this was not officiating.
- 5:52This was future defense, and against a team that can't shoot
- 5:56is not a good shooting team. How they were continually up in
- 5:59their grill and then getting beat and time after time after
- 6:02time the Maryland guys were able to go off the bounce, get to the
- 6:04rim, get fouled a lot of times and get to the free throw line.
- 6:07It was just an awful, I thought, defensive effort against a team.
- 6:11The scout's pretty easy. Make them shoot.
- 6:13They didn't do that. Yeah, and I think, you know,
- 6:17look, it's a bad loss. And I was joking with somebody
- 6:20at my son's baseball practice about of course they had to lose
- 6:23this game. Right before I go on with you
- 6:25statewide, you know, everybody's freaking out today about it's a
- 6:31bad loss. The the timing on this is worse.
- 6:35And I think because it brings up a lot of memories of, of other
- 6:39coaching 10 years and not just Fran McCaffrey, but the a bad
- 6:43loss about 3 or 4 weeks before you start to get into post
- 6:48season play. So I understand the doom and
- 6:50gloom here. You know, it was, there's no way
- 6:54to sugarcoat it. It, it was a bad loss.
- 6:56They should have been, especially the way that they
- 6:58played on the West Coast when they were on the road.
- 7:01They should have been able to go in there and, and beat a team
- 7:04that they were superior to. And so I, I understand that
- 7:08there's going to be a little bit of angst today among Hawkeye
- 7:11fans, but I was actually, I was eating dinner last night.
- 7:15And there's proof of this. You can look at this online.
- 7:18But I, I went out for Chinese last night during the game.
- 7:21I was watching the game on my phone.
- 7:23And after my meal was over, my fortune said after defeat comes
- 7:27regrowth. So for those of you looking for
- 7:30an omen out there, yeah, it was a bad it was a bad loss.
- 7:34And the team that played last night in an Iowa jersey doesn't
- 7:38look like one that's going to be able to make much noise in in
- 7:41the post season. But again, I think it's about a
- 7:44matter of perspective for me and going back to the beginning of
- 7:47the season, I think it would have been crazy to expect this
- 7:51team to be where they've at be what they've accomplished so far
- 7:55this year. And so for me, I, I'm this is a
- 7:59role that I am not used to playing on the radio, but I'm
- 8:02going to be the cautiously optimistic person here and just
- 8:06hope that everybody has a bad night.
- 8:09And that was Iowa's bad night. And that this is not the start
- 8:12of something that we have unfortunately seen before with
- 8:15Iowa men's basketball in mid February.
- 8:17The Fran Fade it was, and I know there were plenty on the beat
- 8:21that did not believe it was real.
- 8:23There was a long, long run run of awfulness there.
- 8:26And Aaron White, his senior year, he was about the only one
- 8:28that could pull him out of that buck and the mire.
- 8:30That seemed to happen almost on a yearly basis with Iowa
- 8:33basketball. And though that turned around a
- 8:34little bit. So we know eventually how that
- 8:36all turned out. Todd, one other thing to me,
- 8:40it's Bennett Sturtz and he was so good.
- 8:42And yet late in the basketball game, after Maryland got in foul
- 8:45trouble, they stopped going to the rim.
- 8:47They were settling. And it wasn't just him.
- 8:49Cooper Koch had open shots. He's got to make those shots.
- 8:52You go out there, he doesn't have a rebound.
- 8:54I know he's improved immensely on the defensive end of the
- 8:57floor, but you're a shooter. You got to make shots and he
- 8:59wasn't able to do that. And there was nobody else that
- 9:01was able to help out. We see Bennett Sturtz go out
- 9:04there 13 of 21. His other teammates combined for
- 9:0812, made field goals, he made 13.
- 9:10Everybody else only finished with 12.
- 9:12That is a path to losing. It can't all be on Bennett
- 9:15Sturtz. And there were so many times,
- 9:16even after Iowa took the lead, after Hassan hit those
- 9:19back-to-back 3 pointers, it would just who's going to bail
- 9:22us out? We'll just get the ball to
- 9:23Bennett and we'll settle. And they settled way too much
- 9:25offensively. Yeah, and that's not going to be
- 9:28a recipe for success in the postseason because everybody in
- 9:31the country knows who Bennett Sturtz is.
- 9:33And you, if you're able to bottle him up and shut him down,
- 9:37this is a team that's going to need some other guys to step up.
- 9:40And I think I think it was Mike Loss that noted last night.
- 9:45You could take any combination of four Iowa players and add
- 9:48their point total together and not get where Sturtz was last
- 9:52night in the box score. That's not a recipe for success.
- 9:55You you got to find a little bit of balance.
- 9:57And I did think that they did get a little tentative that
- 10:01they're down the stretch, maybe doubted, doubted themselves a
- 10:04little bit. I don't think that's probably
- 10:06the right way to to phrase it. But there just wasn't that that
- 10:11killer instinct that that you kind of need to win Rd. games on
- 10:14the big tenant. I, I'm not talking about going
- 10:15into East Lansing or West Lafayette, you know, you can
- 10:19talk about empty arenas and, and everything, but it's still tough
- 10:22to play on the road in the Big 10.
- 10:24And, and that's why I was so encouraged after seeing what
- 10:26they did on that West Coast swing.
- 10:28I thought, well, they'll go to Maryland and you know, it's not
- 10:31going to be that much of a problem, but they just had a, an
- 10:34all around awful night last night.
- 10:36I'd be curious to hear what Ben McCollum has to say with the the
- 10:40benefit of almost 24 hours hindsight now going back and
- 10:43looking and and seeing some of the video, just exactly what he
- 10:48thought the problem was. Listen to him with Dolph after
- 10:52the game. He was audibly upset, couldn't
- 10:56see visually, but hearing him, he was not pleased.
- 10:59He was not pleased with the effort.
- 11:00He used a couple of timeouts after some defensive breakdowns.
- 11:03I don't believe that that was the scout in the game plan.
- 11:06The way they played out. It was execution.
- 11:07And we'll bring back a Kirk Fahrens ISM there.
- 11:10It's about execution, right? And the execution, I thought
- 11:12last night on both ends of the floor was really poor.
- 11:14Let's get out to the phone lines right now.
- 11:16You can join us as well here on Miller and Condon on the Iowa
- 11:19Sports Radio Network, phone number 5152845966515284.
- 11:24KX&O is where you can join us here today.
- 11:27Jim's on the line with us. We'll hope everything works out
- 11:30and Todd's able to heal her as well.
- 11:31Jim, go ahead. You're on Miller and Condon.
- 11:34Hey guys, I got a got a question for Todd here.
- 11:37After my first comment, I kind of predicted that last night.
- 11:41It looked, it looked sluggish against Northwestern.
- 11:43And I'm it, it's an excuse. But traveling West Coast, being
- 11:47gone for six days, coming back to the Midwest, we've been
- 11:50getting on a plane. They just looked like they were.
- 11:54And he called it Cooper Koch got to make those shots.
- 11:56I mean, he had open looks. And for Todd, I got to.
- 12:00Hopefully you can hear me if you remember Jim from Kyota.
- 12:04Yeah, I remember Jim from Kyota. You were about to get your hat.
- 12:07In football season, yeah, I'm the guy.
- 12:09Absolutely. You said they don't win more
- 12:12than six games. I'll eat my hat.
- 12:16Oh, great. Great to hear from you, Jim, and
- 12:19glad you're still out there listening.
- 12:21I think they went in the seven games that year, so you were.
- 12:24They you were close. They did.
- 12:27OK, have a good show guys. Thanks, Jim for the phone call.
- 12:30Jim checking in with us 284-5966.
- 12:33So yeah, look at that. Some of your old listeners
- 12:35popping in here Todd, like to hear that as well.
- 12:37Yeah, that was the I'll eat my circus sports hat if I would go
- 12:42six and six this year. And that was what, three years
- 12:45ago or something like that. And they three or four years
- 12:48ago. And yeah, I almost wound up
- 12:51looking up recipes for for hats and and eating them.
- 12:55But yeah, that the, the travel thing is something that, you
- 12:59know, yeah, it's an excuse, but I think it's also there's some
- 13:02validity to it because that's, that's quite a schedule for
- 13:07anybody to keep up, you know, across country, you know, West
- 13:10Coast, back to the Midwest and East Coast.
- 13:12And now that we've got these conferences Without Borders, you
- 13:17know, it, it's going to see, you're seeing stuff like this
- 13:20all the time, more often than not.
- 13:22But eventually, eventually, we'll all get used to this Pan
- 13:26American Big 10. I've got a theory to run by you.
- 13:31This one just popped in my head. So let's see if there's maybe
- 13:34any fluidity to it. You go through and outside of
- 13:36the Indiana game, that six game-winning streak, the Rutgers
- 13:39game, Rutgers is bad. You're at home.
- 13:41You barely beat Rutgers. You barely beat USCA team.
- 13:45That is OK. That was at home.
- 13:47Oregon is terrible and certainly without Biddle, we've seen that
- 13:50is not a very good team. He's come back and they pushed
- 13:53Purdue in their first matchup when he was back out there.
- 13:56Washington played poorly for 1/2, came back an incredible
- 13:58second-half. Northwestern.
- 14:00A lethargic win against a Northwestern team that's not
- 14:02very good regardless of the lead they had last night against
- 14:05Michigan and now this one. The wins cure everything.
- 14:08I I completely get that a win is a win and all those different
- 14:11adages that we throw out there. However, when you dive a little
- 14:15bit deeper into that six game-winning streak outside of
- 14:17the Indiana game, they really didn't play that well and it was
- 14:21aided with just who they played. Suddenly when we look at what's
- 14:24coming up, Purdue Saturday, Tuesday against Nebraska next
- 14:29Sunday, then a week from Sunday you're on the road at Wisconsin.
- 14:32Suddenly, well, it's a loss. It's tough against Maryland.
- 14:35That thing turns into a four-game losing streak.
- 14:37Panic buttons are going to be hit everywhere here.
- 14:40Maybe, just maybe, that six game-winning streak wasn't quite
- 14:43as good as we thought at the time.
- 14:46But for a while, I was going to have to ask you what Iowa sport
- 14:48we were talking about there, because it sounded like you were
- 14:50describing football. You know, we always hear from
- 14:52people where they beat the teams that they're supposed to beat
- 14:55and they lose to the teams that they shouldn't and and then they
- 14:58kick one that they should definitely win.
- 15:00I, you've got me more than a little nervous now that you lay
- 15:03out that upcoming scenario. And I'm not going to lie.
- 15:06And boy, it's going to get ugly if they drop three or four games
- 15:10in a row, especially given the PTSD of of past Iowa basketball
- 15:15teams. I'm not, I'm not giving up on
- 15:18this team yet. And I, I, I still think there
- 15:21was something there and winning those games, you know, reaching
- 15:24down and finding something on a night where maybe you weren't
- 15:27shooting that well or weren't playing that well.
- 15:29They still managed to win those games.
- 15:31So I want to give them as much credit as I can for the teams
- 15:35that they beat during that streak.
- 15:37And again, hopefully the Maryland lost last night was
- 15:40just an aberration, a little blip on the radar.
- 15:42But things are going to get down to the nitty gritty here with
- 15:46that next four games, as you said.
- 15:48And this is sort of the time of year where tournament teams are
- 15:51are tested, right? Like, like if this is going to
- 15:53be an NCAA tournament team, then they're going to need to to show
- 15:58it and prove it here against NCAA Tournament competition.
- 16:02Two of their two worst games defensively have come here
- 16:06recently. The Washington game and what we
- 16:09saw last night. In fact, the defensive
- 16:11efficiency number last night was at worst of the season.
- 16:14That combines obviously the opponent that you're playing, as
- 16:16we mentioned, not a very good Maryland offense and yet they
- 16:19put 77 up on the board. It was also not a game where
- 16:21Maryland just shot lights out that they were just incredible
- 16:23from behind the arc and you kind of throw your hands up in the
- 16:26air and say what can you do? Charles Bugs wasn't walking
- 16:28through that door. It was in UC Riverside hitting
- 16:3120, 73 pointers or whatever it was against Doctor Tom's team
- 16:35back in the late 80s. This was different.
- 16:36It was just Maryland get into the tin, get into the rim, time
- 16:39in and time out. A frustrating loss on the other
- 16:42side. The Iowa women needed one and it
- 16:44didn't matter the fashion. We talked about the six wins for
- 16:47Iowa. Well, where were they?
- 16:48Good, that good? Didn't matter how it happened.
- 16:50And yet, after the first quarter, I take a look at the
- 16:52score, watch a little bit during halftime and then watch
- 16:54basically the fourth quarter after the Iowa men went final.
- 16:57And the Iowa women last night give up 31 points total in the
- 17:01final 3/4 after giving up 25 in the first.
- 17:04The game played was good. Washington can't shoot.
- 17:06They made him shoot from the outside.
- 17:08They didn't make them. Iowa gets the win and cures a
- 17:11little bit of the frustration, certainly on the women's side.
- 17:15Yeah, and again, you look at the calendar and what time of the
- 17:17year it is and and not all wins are created equal.
- 17:21And and that was a big win for them last night because they did
- 17:24need that. Now, you, you had some fan parts
- 17:26of the fan base that were getting a little riled up.
- 17:29And, and I've seen a lot of talk about Jan Jensen and her
- 17:33abilities as a coach. And I just, you know, the, the
- 17:38time that I've been out of sports radio and sports media,
- 17:42it's really been refreshing. It's allowed me to step back
- 17:46and, and take a perspective on this.
- 17:48And, you know, not having to pretend like every single day is
- 17:53is the biggest day of the year and every game is the most
- 17:56important game. And what they did last night,
- 17:59you know, great night for chitchat Wright, Hannah Stolke
- 18:03with the double double. And, you know, it's not easy
- 18:07winning a game when you know you need to win the game.
- 18:11And, and everybody in that locker room last night knew that
- 18:15they needed to win that game. So there was an immense amount
- 18:18of pressure on them. I don't care who the opponent
- 18:20was, they all knew that they needed to win that game last
- 18:24night. So I wouldn't necessarily say
- 18:25they're breathing a sigh of relief today at Carver Hawkeye
- 18:28Arena, but they did exactly what they needed to do last night.
- 18:31Absolutely get one in the win column.
- 18:33They got the weird game Monday, 11 AM tip off on Presidents Day
- 18:36over in Lincoln against Nebraska.
- 18:38That'll be a coin flip game. You go back to when they played
- 18:40in Carver. I will pulled away late in the
- 18:43fourth quarter, but that was a tight basketball game throughout
- 18:45when Iowa was really running at that point and playing some good
- 18:48basketball and they struggled to get by them.
- 18:50You know that's going to be difficult.
- 18:51If you didn't get it last night, then you're talking about
- 18:53potentially A5 game losing streak.
- 18:55And yes, people would be freaking out.
- 18:57Todd, you mentioned chitchat and her ability.
- 19:01She's a small split on the floor pretty much every time out there
- 19:03at 5 foot 4, yet her shooting ability, she just needs a little
- 19:07bit of room and you give her a little bit of space, she's going
- 19:09to knock it down. But with McCabe now out, not out
- 19:12there any longer with her on the bench with the ACL tear, they
- 19:15need outside shooting. Sremmlow shoots it a lot.
- 19:18She didn't last night, which is probably a good thing, but she's
- 19:20certainly inconsistent from back there.
- 19:22We don't fear box struggles that she has.
- 19:24She's at 30% on the season from three, though She hit a dagger
- 19:27that put it away last night. You need the outside shooting
- 19:30and with the bigs that you have with Stolky and with Hayden, you
- 19:33need something to stretch out the defense.
- 19:35I think Chitchat, not just what she does as the point guard, but
- 19:38maybe coupled with what she does just shooting the basketball
- 19:41from the outside, probably going to be the difference.
- 19:43And if this team is going to get to the second weekend, have an
- 19:46opportunity to host the 1st 2 rounds of the NCAA Tournament, I
- 19:49think chitchat's going to have to probably shoot the ball at an
- 19:52incredibly high level throughout the course of the season.
- 19:54We're talking about somebody that's shooting 48% from three.
- 19:57You're putting a lot on her shoulders, but it feels like
- 20:00Chitchat, right? Can handle it.
- 20:02Yeah, You know, I, I remember my reaction when she transferred in
- 20:06from Georgia Tech. I thought they were getting a, a
- 20:09pretty good player. She's she's exceeded my
- 20:12expectations for her. And, and I just hope that, you
- 20:15know, when she doesn't run out of gas or there's no regression
- 20:17here down the stretch because you're absolutely right.
- 20:20She could be The X Factor for this team.
- 20:22And she's not, you know, I don't think she's a household name
- 20:26around the country or, or, you know, an amazing player by any
- 20:31stretch of the imagination. But I think she's sneaky good.
- 20:34And when she gets hot, especially like you said, give
- 20:37her a little bit of space, allow her to get that shot off.
- 20:41She can win some games for this team.
- 20:44But I, you know, as much as I enjoyed the, the Megan Gustafson
- 20:47era and the Caitlin Clark era, there's something to be said
- 20:50about this post Caitlin Clark iteration of Iowa women's
- 20:54basketball where where really the focus is on the team and,
- 20:58and who's going to step up and have a big game on any given
- 21:01night because it's not just one player carrying the load.
- 21:04And I just, I, I don't know what the future is going to hold for
- 21:08this team this year as far as the postseason is concerned, But
- 21:12I do think on nights where you get a big scoring night from
- 21:16chitchat, right, certainly isn't going to hurt.
- 21:18You, Todd Robicam joining us as we talk some Hawkeyes.
- 21:22We'll get into a little more big picture stuff a little bit later
- 21:24on in the program. Before we take our first time
- 21:27out, talk baseball with Matt Snyder from CBSSports.com.
- 21:31The Olympics are happening. Todd, your sports fan, as we
- 21:34know, Are you a stick and ball only kind of person?
- 21:36Is it only got to be, you know, got to be something like that
- 21:39because I know there's a wide range of it.
- 21:42My wife loves the Winter Olympics, though she's not a big
- 21:44sports fan outside of football. She absolutely is big into that.
- 21:48Is this something that grabs a hold of you?
- 21:50Is this something that you know what, let's flip on the Olympics
- 21:52again and see what's happening in curling.
- 21:56Well, I think you hit on it there.
- 21:58I'm more of a Summer Games guy, not much of an athlete myself,
- 22:02winter or summer. But you know, I, I remember the
- 22:06first time turning on NBCA million years ago and, and
- 22:10seeing these granite rocks slowly making their way down
- 22:13and, and down the I, what is this?
- 22:15And then two hours later, I was still watching it.
- 22:18So there is that sort of thing about the Olympics where you
- 22:22find these bizarre sports where you you get really into them
- 22:26every four years. And, and I see a lot of curling
- 22:28fans out there right now and I'm one of them hockey, you know,
- 22:32the men's hockey, especially the rivalry with Canada and, and the
- 22:35United States, I think is, is worth checking out.
- 22:38I just, I have not been paying a ton of attention to the Olympics
- 22:42other than the scandals going on.
- 22:43You got the guy that was cheating on his wife and the the
- 22:48since the skier, I can't remember what sport, but stole
- 22:51the credit cards from her teammate.
- 22:53I mean, like, this is like the messiest Olympics ever.
- 22:56Like just yeah, I don't care about the sports, but give me
- 22:59some give me a little bit of drama.
- 23:00Give me some soap opera behind the scenes.
- 23:02But I it's been it's been fun. Obviously the, the Lindsey Vonn
- 23:07story was was unfortunate and she's going to face a long
- 23:12recovery with all of those leg surgeries and everything.
- 23:15But I think, you know, especially I don't want to speak
- 23:18for everybody in the United States, but I think in the
- 23:20United States when the Winter Olympics roll around, we're we
- 23:23just kind of shrug our shoulders and yeah, we're going to give
- 23:26it, we're going to give this one to the Nordic countries and, and
- 23:29the places that are covered in snow and we'll see you in the
- 23:32summer in a couple years. I don't think the Winter
- 23:34Olympics are necessarily our thing.
- 23:36No, it's it's a different. It's sports that I think most of
- 23:41us here, certainly in the state of Iowa, a lot of sports we
- 23:43don't know a whole lot about. But the way that they present
- 23:47it, it doesn't get you in. They do a really good job in.
- 23:50Yeah, skiing and shooting that, that could be the most
- 23:55Midwestern Winter Olympic sport ever.
- 23:58Maybe for a? Figured a way to to mix in a 30
- 24:01rack of Bush light or something in there in between shooting and
- 24:04skiing. Now you're talking.
- 24:05I don't know, yeah. That sounds.
- 24:08Like we're we're kicking around the idea for the Midwest Winter
- 24:10Winter Olympics here. Todd Bravo camp hanging out with
- 24:13us here today. Miller and Condon on the Iowa
- 24:15Sports Radio Network. Quick timeout on the other side,
- 24:18We're going to break down Major League Baseball.
- 24:19A look before pitchers and catchers officially report with
- 24:23our friend Matt Snyder from CBSSports.com.
- 24:25We'll talk Cubs, We'll talk Cardinals.
- 24:27We'll talk Royals. We'll talk Twins, Brewers, maybe
- 24:29even the White Sox and a look at the national scene as well.
- 24:32That's as we continue. This is Miller and Condon on the
- 24:34Iowa Sports Radio Network. The sounds of baseball season
- 24:51are upon us as we get ready for the start of MLB.
- 24:55Todd Bromlichamp hanging out with myself, Trent Condon here
- 24:57today. Miller and Condon on the Iowa
- 24:59Sports Radio Network. Todd, a Cubs fan.
- 25:04Our next guest, a Cubs fan. He is Matt Snyder,
- 25:06CBSSports.com. But your fandom never gets in
- 25:09the way of the work that you do over at CBS Sports, right Matt?
- 25:14A while, every once in a while when I do a soapbox and make fun
- 25:19of other fans, it's definitely a fandom type thing.
- 25:22But yeah, you know, every once in a while, like I said.
- 25:26Every once in a while, well, that's bound to happen.
- 25:28We got the World Baseball Classic and that's where I want
- 25:30to start the conversation today. I, even as a baseball fan,
- 25:35struggle to get overly excited about this.
- 25:37Maybe by the time we get towards the medals and getting into say,
- 25:41the semifinals, that might grow my excitement a little bit.
- 25:44It's high level baseball. We see that seemingly every
- 25:46single time this event comes around.
- 25:49Is it growing? Is it building steam?
- 25:51Is it going to continue? Certainly in the fashion of the
- 25:53Major League Baseball and and baseball fans want to see.
- 25:56What are your thoughts overall on the World Baseball Classic?
- 25:59Yeah, I think it's the interest among the players to actually
- 26:02take part is growing. You know, when it first came
- 26:05out, it it was hard to get at least USA players to to take
- 26:09this thing seriously. And I think a little something
- 26:12sparked last time out. And I remember I was in in
- 26:15Arizona for spring training and in the Dodgers clubhouse next
- 26:18month. He was going on and on about how
- 26:20much it means to so many guys to want to play for their country
- 26:24and everything. And the Trey Turner Grand Slam,
- 26:29I think was a big, big deal. Like a lot of people kind of
- 26:31woke up, their antennas went up. And then you had the
- 26:35championship game against Japan, which ended in Shohei Otani
- 26:38versus Mike Trout, and Otani struck him out.
- 26:41Now you head into this one and Team USA.
- 26:45Last time, the lineup was loaded, but the pitching staff
- 26:47really wasn't. Like off the top of my head, I
- 26:48think Beryl Kelly was the ace. This team has Tarek School and
- 26:53Paul Schemes to start. And then you go to Logan Webb.
- 26:56Then you go to Joe Ryan. You've got Matthew Boyd on
- 26:58there. You've got Nolan McClain for a
- 27:00youngster like, And then at the back in the bullpen, you've got
- 27:02David Bednar, Mason Miller, Griffin Jacks.
- 27:05Like, this is a loaded pitching staff.
- 27:07Oh, and by the way, the lineup has Cal Raleigh, Aaron Judge.
- 27:11It's just it's Kyle Schwarber completely loaded.
- 27:15Bryce Harper, Bobby Wood, Junior, Gunnar Henderson, Pete
- 27:17Kronster. Are you kidding me?
- 27:19This team is completely stacked, so it sucks that Corbin Carroll
- 27:23got hurt, but the outfield right now is Byron Buxton, Pete Crow,
- 27:27Armstrong, and Aaron Judge. I think that seems like a decent
- 27:29outfield. Yeah, Buxton and Pete Crowe
- 27:32starting to chase after some balls yet?
- 27:34That should be good. Who's going to push him then?
- 27:36Who's going to be the team they're fighting with for the
- 27:38gold? I think it's still Japan.
- 27:41They've been one of the best teams since the World Baseball
- 27:43Classic started. And you've got guys like Shohei
- 27:46Otani and Saya Suzuki. They've got Yamamoto.
- 27:49I don't know how much they're going to throw him, but they do
- 27:51have Yamamoto there. They've got a lot of guys that
- 27:54haven't come stateside yet who are very, very good players.
- 27:57So I, I think if you power ranked the teams, USA is
- 28:01obviously number one, Japan, a second Dominican Republic will
- 28:05be in there. Puerto Rico's usually really
- 28:07good, but they've got those issues with the, the insurance
- 28:11where guys might not be allowed to play.
- 28:12So and Lindor now with the, with the ham ate bone injury anyway.
- 28:17So he's probably out the same way that Corbin Carroll's out
- 28:19from USA. So it looks like a big three to
- 28:23me in USA, Japan and Dominican Republic.
- 28:27Matt Todd Brawlkamp here, Thanks for joining me all those years
- 28:31on the radio in Cedar Rapids. We just want to ask you, you
- 28:34think there is there a dark horse team that you think could
- 28:37make some noise? That's tougher.
- 28:40Like Venezuela has a pretty good contingent of players there.
- 28:46I mean, it's Cuba is always they're pretty good and they're
- 28:52they're harder because like we don't know much about the Cuban
- 28:55players because we're not allowed to.
- 28:57They don't let they don't let much information out.
- 29:02So maybe one of those two teams, I sadly, I'll admit not as well
- 29:08versed once you get past like the top couple teams, I'm not as
- 29:13well versed on any of them. But you know, if I just look at
- 29:16like Venezuela, Ronald Lacuna, Junior Jackson Churrio, Salvador
- 29:19Perez, you got to look at the major leaguers like it's OK,
- 29:22Mexico, Randy Rosarena, Jaron Duran, Andres Munoz.
- 29:28Then you're getting down to, you know, then you get down to like
- 29:30Canada and Italy, Korea, Cuba. So I, I think you're probably
- 29:36going to end up seeing one of the big three and then, you
- 29:40know, maybe Venezuela, Mexico, Cuba looks in there as well.
- 29:44Let's jump into our regional teams here as we look through
- 29:48the squads here that matter across our state.
- 29:51And let's start with the biggest one, and that is the Chicago
- 29:53Cubs. Now, as mentioned, both you and
- 29:55Todd are Cubs fans. I guess I pointed this after
- 29:58what they did a year ago, that push that they had against the
- 30:01Brewers and the DS getting to the playoffs, It felt like they
- 30:04were really building something there.
- 30:06What was the one thing that would give you some pause with
- 30:08this squad? What's your biggest concern area
- 30:11with the Cubs? Maybe just the the bullpen
- 30:17itself, because I know that Jed Hoyer is trying to do the thing
- 30:20where he hits on a bunch of cheap guys kind of like he did
- 30:22last year and he got to the playoffs and there was a big 5
- 30:25there. But it's hard to hit on on so
- 30:27many guys every time. And OK, so there's Daniel
- 30:30Palencia now closer, very, very good for most of last year.
- 30:34But all relievers are volatile and he is too.
- 30:37So yeah, it's film a ton. Hunter Harvey may ton, you know,
- 30:41inconsistent from year to year. Hunter Harvey, a lot of injuries
- 30:44and you backed the field bar 39 years old, then you Jacob Webb,
- 30:49Hobie Millner, that could end up being an Achilles heel.
- 30:55It could end up being very good if he hits on so many guys
- 30:58again, because it was the first half of the season, the Bolton
- 31:01locked in was great. Then they went through a couple
- 31:03months where they weren't very good and then by the playoffs it
- 31:05got back to the point where they were they were really, really
- 31:08good, at least with that top five.
- 31:09So I think there's potential in there for not every single guy
- 31:13to hit and then to have to try to figure it out on the fly
- 31:16during this. Season What about what about the
- 31:19rest of the Central Matt I I look at what the the teams in
- 31:22the division did or mainly didn't do during the offseason.
- 31:26Is there anybody there that you think is going to be in a
- 31:30position to to challenge the Cubs?
- 31:32So, you know, the Brewers with Pat Murphy, I think are are
- 31:35still a very good team. And the Reds always seem to be
- 31:38that perennial. You know, this will be the year
- 31:40for them and it and it isn't the Cardinals have gone into full
- 31:43rebuild mode. What what are your thoughts on
- 31:45the division? Yeah, so the Brewers I the
- 31:49Baseball Prospectus Pakoda projections came out earlier
- 31:52this week and had the Cubs win the division by 10 games.
- 31:56But I think we can at least give the Brewers a little five extra
- 31:59because they always punch above their weight.
- 32:01Always, always, always. They get everything that came
- 32:03out of the margins of the roster.
- 32:06I do think the Cubs are better and I I think the Brewers,
- 32:09unlike the Tigers, for example, in the AL Central, who said
- 32:12we've got one year left with Terex Scubal.
- 32:14Let's just go all in and time promer Valdez.
- 32:16For example, the the Brewers one year left with Freddy Peralta,
- 32:19obviously not even close to being on the same level as Terex
- 32:21Scubal, but he was their ace last year and they said one year
- 32:24left of Peralta. We're going to for two guys who
- 32:27are good prospects but lottery tickets.
- 32:30So I didn't love that move. I like I said, I think the
- 32:34Brewers are down a step from the Cubs, but not a huge step and I
- 32:37wouldn't be surprised if the Brewers end up in first place.
- 32:40The Reds, I thought they badly needed to add middle order power
- 32:43there. Last year they had I think 22
- 32:46home runs led the team and they need to have, especially in that
- 32:49ballpark, someone hit 354045. They did add Au Jemio Suarez
- 32:53here late. I wanted them for like El Pete
- 32:55Alonzo. So I don't think Schwarber was
- 32:57ever going to go there, but I like I wish they would have been
- 32:59on Alonzo, but Juarez is a good get there late.
- 33:03And now we find out LA De La Cruz was hurt for a lot of the
- 33:06year last year. There might be a little more in
- 33:09guys like Matt McLean, maybe a full season with Stal Stewart.
- 33:12You see a little bit more there. I like the Reds more than the
- 33:14projections do. On the other side of that is the
- 33:17Pirates. I've seen the Pirates with like
- 33:19a 37% chance to make the playoffs.
- 33:21I'm just not saying that. I know they added to the offense
- 33:24with Brandon Loud, Ryan O'hearn, they just added Marcel Ozuna,
- 33:29but it still just isn't a very good offense.
- 33:32And the rotation, there's potential there.
- 33:35Obviously Skeins is amazing. Mitch Keller kind of average ish
- 33:40mediocre last year. And then Ashcraft, Bubba
- 33:43Chandler. You're counting on a lot, a lot
- 33:45of big steps forward there. So not quite there for me.
- 33:48And yeah, the Cardinals are in the rebuild.
- 33:50I know we're not used to stand that they've hardly they've only
- 33:53finished. I mean this blew my mind when I
- 33:55looked it up. They only finished last like 3
- 33:57times in their entire existence, but I think it's going to happen
- 34:01again for the fourth time this year.
- 34:03The rebuild that is happening with the Cardinals and just
- 34:05taking a look at their depth chart and rotation, it is a
- 34:07whole lot of yuck. And certainly on that one.
- 34:10Did it come two years too late though?
- 34:11I mean, in hindsight, it's easy to save that.
- 34:13But Matt, we had these conversations a ton that the
- 34:16Cardinals, they waited so long now and I think it's going to be
- 34:19even worse for them in the interim.
- 34:21If they would have done this when they should have, they'd be
- 34:23in better shape now, probably in the rebuild would be certainly
- 34:26your way. How bad is it going to get in
- 34:27Saint Louis? And attendance wise, that's got
- 34:29to be a huge concern. Well, it's, oh, it's funny, I
- 34:33actually, like I said, my fandom comes out sometimes when I do
- 34:35Snyder's Soapbox, and I made fun of the Cardinals fans late in
- 34:39the year because I said you guys told me my entire life you were
- 34:42the best fans in baseball and you always went to games no
- 34:44matter what. It's really easy to do that when
- 34:46you're good every year, when you're bad.
- 34:49Now, you looked at the ballpark in September, it was empty every
- 34:52game. There was nobody there.
- 34:54There's going to be a lot of that this year.
- 34:56They've got some promising guys. JJ Weatherholt is a good Rookie
- 34:59of the Year candidate. Basin went a really, really
- 35:02exciting young player, still potential.
- 35:05And Nolan Gorman, he's only 25, still potential.
- 35:07And Jordan Walker, he's only 23. But you need to start seeing it
- 35:10on a consistent basis at the big league level.
- 35:13I don't think they're going to bottom out anywhere close to
- 35:16like Rockies last year, White Sox two years ago levels.
- 35:20It's not going to be like that, you know, 65 and 65 wins.
- 35:27So that'd be 97 losses, yes, 65 and 97 seems like a low point
- 35:31for me. 60 to 65 to 70 wins or so, I think.
- 35:36And that'll be good enough for last in the division.
- 35:37Because while I don't think the Pirates are a playoff contender,
- 35:40they're not awful. And I don't expect the Reds or
- 35:43Brewers to be awful either. So Cardinals will be in last,
- 35:46but they'll be one of the better last place.
- 35:49Speaking of last place teams, the team I root for, the
- 35:51Minnesota Twins trending that direction.
- 35:54Joe Ryan still there, still got the White Sox and White Sox are
- 35:58are building their way up. Though 3 consecutive 100 lost
- 36:01seasons make it a little bit difficult to certainly see them
- 36:04as a contender. If you're whoever becomes the
- 36:07new GM because the GM just walked away in a mutual parting
- 36:11of ways. Think he sees the finances and
- 36:13what's happening there. What do you do?
- 36:15What is the hope for the Minnesota Twins, not just this
- 36:17year, but in the next 3-4? Well, I believe we already
- 36:22discussed this maybe a month or six weeks or so ago.
- 36:25It's kind of 1/2 measure, right? Like he started the rebuild last
- 36:29summer, especially in getting rid of Korea and his contract.
- 36:32That was a big one. But there were several bulletin
- 36:34pieces that were moved as well. Jack Saran, if you look at the
- 36:39roster right now, I know Buxton wants to stay with the Twins and
- 36:42everything and he's public, been public about he's not going to
- 36:45accept the trade. That's fine.
- 36:46But you have two guys in the rotation and Joe Ryan and Pablo
- 36:50Lopez that are just screaming to be traded.
- 36:52I'm not meaning that literally. I mean, if you look at the
- 36:55roster, it's like they stick out as man.
- 36:58You could get some good stuff for them right now.
- 37:01I don't know if it's too late in the offseason now and you need
- 37:04to wait until the trade deadline, that's fine.
- 37:06There will be teams desperate for a frontline starting pitcher
- 37:09heading to the trade deadline. And both of these guys can look
- 37:12like frontline starters. And, you know, over is the type
- 37:15of guy that as well could have a very good year and could look
- 37:17very tradable. So I think you start there and
- 37:20maybe once he sees the way this thing is going, then you have a
- 37:25conversation with Buxton again and say, hey, man, do you want
- 37:28to go to a contender? And if he still says I want to
- 37:29be a twin for life, OK, that's fine.
- 37:32But you start with Lopez and Ryan, and then you go from
- 37:35there. Matt Snyder, CBSSports.com Matt,
- 37:37Any trips to Florida, Arizona for spring training?
- 37:41Nothing scheduled right now. That's always subject to change,
- 37:45though, but I'm not expecting it this year, unfortunately.
- 37:48Had a lot of. I've had a lot of fun the times
- 37:50that I've done it, especially when the World Baseball Classic
- 37:53was out there in Arizona when I was also in spring training.
- 37:55That was great. We will be talking a whole lot
- 37:58more coming up here in just a few weeks.
- 38:00Enjoy the kickoff to the baseball season.
- 38:02We'll talk to you again soon, Matt.
- 38:04All right. Take care guys.
- 38:05That's Snyder, CBSSports.com joining us here from Miller and
- 38:07Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 38:10Todd Brommelkamp with me today on the other side.
- 38:12We're going to learn a little bit more about Tub, about Todd.
- 38:15He's a Cubs fan, we know that, but he roots for the wrong team
- 38:19in the NFL. Get to know Todd Brommelkamp
- 38:21when we come back. Miller and Condon on the Iowa
- 38:24Sports Radio Network. I've been up our #1 Miller in
- 38:31Condon on the I was sports radio network.
- 38:33Todd Brommelkamp in today for Ken.
- 38:37What I like to do when we have a Co host hanging out for Ken for
- 38:40the Dave like to get you to know a little bit better.
- 38:43Now we know you covered the Hawkeyes, Todd for years and
- 38:45years and years starting at the daily I one.
- 38:47That's when I first saw your byline.
- 38:49We had some friends in the same industry, my buddy Nick that you
- 38:53worked with over at the DI, and of course, covering the Hawkeyes
- 38:56both on radio and on print and on top of it, the Internet for a
- 39:00number of years. So we know you're Hawkeyes, you
- 39:03went to Iowa, all those different things.
- 39:06You're a Cubs fan. You're always forthright about
- 39:08that. How in God's name do you become
- 39:09a Packer fan? Certainly in our age, the
- 39:11Packers stunk. Oh, Don Makowski was a hell of a
- 39:17quarterback before Brett Favre came along and and.
- 39:20I'm talking about before, I'm talking about the 80s.
- 39:22I'm going back a little bit further.
- 39:24No, I don't it. But look.
- 39:25Lynn Dickey, Paul Kaufman, James Lofton.
- 39:30There was something in me when I was really young that said you
- 39:32need to be a fan of teams that are gonna have really expensive
- 39:36tickets when you grow up. So maybe that's what it was.
- 39:40I have family in the Chicago area and I also have family up
- 39:44north in Wisconsin. And maybe it was just splitting
- 39:47the difference there, but there was something about the Packers.
- 39:49And I've got the framed Don Makowski jersey down in the
- 39:52basement. It's just waiting to go up on
- 39:54the wall once it gets finished in 2055 or something like that
- 39:59that. That's what it'll happen, no
- 40:00doubt. So what else, sports wise, do
- 40:02you like? You mentioned hockey when we
- 40:04were talking about the Olympics a little bit earlier.
- 40:06Anything else that grabs her fandom?
- 40:09You know, hockey, I'm a Blackhawks guy and I, I, I hate
- 40:15to say this, I am becoming a soccer guy because I have a 9
- 40:191/2 year old son who absolutely loves soccer and it's probably
- 40:23his favorite sport. And I never thought I would
- 40:26embrace soccer at all. And so I have.
- 40:30I've waded into the who's the GOAT, Messi or Ronaldo and
- 40:34Killian and Bape and I I know more about soccer than I ever
- 40:38envisioned knowing about soccer in my life at this point.
- 40:41Mr. Soccer, Todd Bramelcam joins us for Hour 2 coming up next.
