- 0:08Really excited about our next guest to welcome
- 0:11in Alyx Effron. He's the founder of Collectors MD,
- 0:14a movement and support community built specifically
- 0:17for collectors navigating compulsive spending,
- 0:19break culture, and hobby burnout. Under Alyx's
- 0:22leadership, Collectors MD has become the first
- 0:24recovery -focused support group in the hobby.
- 0:28Alyx and his team have created a safe, accountability
- 0:30-driven space that's for collectors. by collectors,
- 0:33helping people reconnect with the hobby with
- 0:35clarity, boundaries, and intention. He's here
- 0:38to talk about the mission, the movement, and
- 0:40how Collectors MD is reshaping the conversation
- 0:42around healthy collecting. Good evening, Alyx.
- 0:47Good evening, gentlemen. Thank you so much for
- 0:49having me on. Yeah, this is a very interesting
- 0:52topic. I mean, very interesting. You know, there's
- 0:56all sorts of recovery. We don't have to get into
- 0:58all the different ones. I would need to recover
- 1:03from collecting. And really, it is. I mean, with
- 1:06the breaking and the live selling, give us a
- 1:11little bit of detail on what goes into this.
- 1:15Yeah, so at a high level, Collectors MD is a peer
- 1:19support and education initiative focused on the
- 1:23intersection of modern collecting, compulsive
- 1:26spending, and gambling adjacent behaviors. The
- 1:29hobby has... changed drastically over the last
- 1:33several years right between live breaks live
- 1:37auctions mystery products pack openings repacks
- 1:41social media hype frictionless spending and just
- 1:45the constant chase for the next big hit there
- 1:48are just so many more high engagement mechanics
- 1:51built into the experience than there used to
- 1:54be right our goal is not to demonize collecting
- 2:00We're collectors ourselves. We believe the hobby
- 2:03can be incredibly positive. It can be nostalgic,
- 2:06social, educational. It's a great way to connect
- 2:10with family and friends. What we're trying to
- 2:13do is just create more awareness around the point
- 2:16where fun can start to become something else.
- 2:20Overspending, chasing losses, hiding purchases,
- 2:24feeling a sense of no longer being in control
- 2:27or realizing the hobby just isn't bringing the
- 2:30same enjoyment anymore. And so that's really
- 2:33where our Rip Responsibly campaign comes in.
- 2:37It's all about encouraging people to collect
- 2:40with intention, understand their boundaries and
- 2:42recognize when they may need to slow down or
- 2:46change the way they participate or maybe ask
- 2:49for support. So again, we've built peer support
- 2:52meetings. We offer educational tools and resources.
- 2:55We have referral pathways. And we've also built
- 2:59what we call The CMD Framework, which is really
- 3:02designed to help bridge the gap between the collectibles
- 3:05industry, the hobby, and the behavioral health
- 3:09and problem gambling worlds. There's a real what
- 3:12we call double blind spot on both sides. A lot
- 3:15of people within the behavioral health field
- 3:17don't fully understand. the nuances of how modern
- 3:21collecting works. And a lot of people in the
- 3:23hobby don't necessarily recognize how some of
- 3:26these mechanics can affect vulnerable people.
- 3:28So our role is really to sit in the middle within
- 3:32this intersection and help both sides understand
- 3:35one another and make sure that if somebody does
- 3:38start struggling, there's a place for them to
- 3:40turn that understands the hobby without judging
- 3:42them. And the biggest thing for us is there isn't
- 3:45one path for everyone, right? For some people,
- 3:48abstinence might be the most appropriate pathway
- 3:50for others. It might be learning how to collect
- 3:53more intentionally and within healthier boundaries.
- 3:56We're not here to diagnose anyone or to tell
- 3:59people what they should do. We're here to create
- 4:02awareness, provide support, and make sure people
- 4:04know they don't have to figure it out alone.
- 4:07Alyx, you mentioned Rip Responsibly, which also
- 4:11serves as a hashtag. Talk about that a little
- 4:13bit. What does that mean and how can that become
- 4:16part of a movement? Yeah. So first of all, I'm
- 4:20so grateful for the support that we've gotten
- 4:23around Rip Responsibly within the last year.
- 4:25Rip Responsibly is really the public facing message
- 4:28behind a lot of what we're doing at Collectors
- 4:30MD. Really at its core, it's a reminder that
- 4:34ripping packs or joining breaks or buying into
- 4:37auctions or participating in the hobby in any
- 4:40capacity should still be rooted in enjoyment,
- 4:42not chasing. So it's not an anti ripping or anti
- 4:47hobby or anti collecting campaign by any means.
- 4:50It's definitely not saying that people shouldn't
- 4:52collect. The idea is that you can love the hobby
- 4:55and still be intentional about how you engage
- 4:57with it. So, you know, just keeping things in
- 5:00mind, like know your budget, understand the odds,
- 5:03pay attention to how you're feeling and recognize
- 5:06when the motivation potentially starts to shift
- 5:09from, you know, this is fun to. i need to hit
- 5:13something or you know i need to make my money
- 5:16back right so we also want Rip Responsibly to
- 5:19become something the industry itself can embrace
- 5:22and it already has breakers shops platforms manufacturers
- 5:26creators influencers and collectors can all play
- 5:30a role in normalizing healthier habits and reminding
- 5:33people that the value of the hobby isn't just
- 5:35the biggest hit or the highlight reels right
- 5:38so for us it really comes back to one simple
- 5:40idea which is collect with intention, not compulsion.
- 5:43And the whole spirit behind that is enjoy the
- 5:46rip, enjoy the community, enjoy the nostalgia,
- 5:49but don't let the chase become the reason that
- 5:51you're participating. Yeah, this is definitely
- 5:55interesting. So how do people go about getting
- 5:58in touch with you? What's the protocol? If somebody
- 6:02determines, I got to stop doing this, what do
- 6:05they do? How do they reach out? How do we find
- 6:07you? Yeah, there's a number of different pathways.
- 6:11Generally, people can find us at CollectorsMD
- 6:13.com. From there, they can learn more about what
- 6:16we do, access our tools and resources. Join one
- 6:20of our free weekly peer support meetings or connect
- 6:24with the broader Collectors MD community, which
- 6:26I'm proud to say we've grown substantially within
- 6:29the last year and a half. We're also present
- 6:31across all social media @CollectorsMD. And
- 6:35if somebody wants to reach out directly, they
- 6:37can always email us at info at CollectorsMD .com.
- 6:40And I always like to emphasize that you don't
- 6:43have to identify as having an addiction or even
- 6:46knowing exactly what you're dealing with to reach
- 6:49out. If collecting, ripping, breaks, auctions,
- 6:53spending, any of that just doesn't feel fun or
- 6:57as manageable as it should, that's enough of
- 7:00a reason to connect with us. And again, if you're
- 7:03a hobby operator and you'd like to support RIP
- 7:06responsibly in the movement, then we'd be more
- 7:09than happy to have a conversation about ways
- 7:11you can get involved. Alyx, talk about The Healthy
- 7:14Hobby Initiative as it relates to The Certified
- 7:17Trading Card Association. Yeah, so I'm proud
- 7:21to share, and this is something that's been in
- 7:23the works for quite some time. Nick Jarman and
- 7:26I launched The Healthy Hobby Initiative in partnership
- 7:29with Collectors MD and the CTCA, The Certified
- 7:33Trading Card Association. And The Healthy Hobby
- 7:35Initiative is really about just bringing the
- 7:38industry itself into the conversation. The idea
- 7:41is that you shouldn't have to choose between
- 7:42loving the hobby and acknowledging that some
- 7:45of the modern mechanics can create problems for
- 7:47certain people. both things can be true at the
- 7:50same time, right? So the initiative is really
- 7:53focused on working with breakers, shops, platforms,
- 7:57creators, manufacturers, other hobby businesses
- 8:00that want to be proactive about promoting healthier
- 8:02engagement. And so that could mean supporting
- 8:05Rip Responsibly. It could mean improving transparency
- 8:08in education. making help resources easier to
- 8:12find or creating a culture where setting limits
- 8:15or stepping away for a while isn't treated like
- 8:18some kind of failure. And a big part of it is
- 8:20also trust, right? We want collectors to feel
- 8:23like the people and the companies they're engaging
- 8:25with actually care about their long -term relationship
- 8:28with the hobby, not just the next transaction,
- 8:30right? We see this massive churn that is happening
- 8:33on live platforms today. We want to make sure
- 8:36that collectors feel seen and heard. So if somebody
- 8:40is showing signs that the chase is getting away
- 8:42from them, the healthy response is to point them
- 8:45towards support, not encourage them to keep spending.
- 8:48And we're trying to do all of that without becoming
- 8:51the hobby police or the hobby watchdog. That's
- 8:53not what we are. That's not our jurisdiction.
- 8:55We're not here to police the hobby. And we're
- 8:58not interested in shaming people or calling out
- 9:00companies or individuals or telling everyone
- 9:02there's one right way to collect. It's just more
- 9:05about creating shared standards and a common
- 9:08language around. what a safer, more sustainable
- 9:10hobby can look like. And that's really why The
- 9:13Healthy Hobby Initiative, again, in partnership
- 9:15with the CTCA and Rip Responsibly, fit together
- 9:18so well. One is the broader industry effort,
- 9:22and the other is the message collectors can actually
- 9:25carry with them, right? Again, enjoy the hobby,
- 9:27know your limits, and collect with intention,
- 9:29not compulsion. Alyx, great stuff. We really
- 9:33appreciate your time and going over this information
- 9:35with us. We'll definitely drop some links that
- 9:38people can contact you and get in touch and,
- 9:41you know, help, help, because, you know, we've
- 9:44all been there, right? So we appreciate it, and
- 9:48we look forward to hearing some more stuff down
- 9:50the road. Thanks, gentlemen. Really appreciate
- 9:51the support and looking forward to hopefully
- 9:53doing this again soon. You got it. Thanks, Alyx.
- 9:56All right. Take care. All right. Thanks to Alyx
- 9:58Effron from Collectors MD. Really powerful stuff.
