- 0:00Chapter 11 of Jeremiah, the Covenant is Broken is the title
- 0:05of this one. This is the word that came to
- 0:08Jeremiah from the Lord. Listen to the terms of this
- 0:11covenant and tell them to the people of Judah and to those who
- 0:16live in Jerusalem. Tell them that this is what the
- 0:20Lord the God of Israel says. Cursed is the one who does not
- 0:24obey the terms of this covenant, the terms I commanded your
- 0:28ancestors when I brought them out of Egypt, out of this
- 0:32smelting furnace. I said obey me and do everything
- 0:36I command you, and you will be my people and I will be your
- 0:40God. Then I will fulfil the oath I
- 0:43swore to your ancestors, to give them a land flowing with milk
- 0:47and honey, the land you possess today.
- 0:50I answered. Amen, Lord, the Lord said to me,
- 0:54Proclaim all these words in the towns of Judah and in the
- 0:58streets of Jerusalem. Listen to the terms of this
- 1:01covenant and follow them. From the time I brought your
- 1:04ancestors up from Egypt until to day, I warned them again and
- 1:09again, saying obey me, but they did not listen or pay attention.
- 1:14Instead, they followed the stubbornness of their evil
- 1:17hearts. So I brought on them all the
- 1:21curses of the covenant I had commanded them to follow, but
- 1:25that they did not keep. So when I read this, I thought,
- 1:29what are all of those curses that are talked about?
- 1:33And if we go to Deuteronomy chapter 28, we will find those
- 1:39to see what this was. So there was there were
- 1:44blessings for obedience at the beginning, and then there were
- 1:49curses for disobedience. So these are the ones that Moses
- 1:53gave to the people. And it's pretty long, actually.
- 1:57A lot. Oh my gosh, there's yeah, it's
- 2:00like 68 verses long. So I will I will read some of
- 2:07this but curses for disobedience says However, if you do not obey
- 2:11the Lord your God and do not carefully follow all his
- 2:14commands and decrees I am giving you to day, all these curses
- 2:18will come on you and overtake you.
- 2:21Maybe we should read like the blessings 1st and then we'll
- 2:25read the curses after that. So starting in Deuteronomy
- 2:28chapter 28 verse one, if you fully obey the Lord your God and
- 2:33carefully follow all His commands I give to you today,
- 2:36the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on
- 2:39earth. All these blessings will come on
- 2:43you and accompany you. If you obey the Lord your God,
- 2:47you will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country.
- 2:51The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your
- 2:55land and the young of your livestock, the calves of your
- 2:58herd, and the lambs of your flocks, your basket and your
- 3:02kneading dough will be blessed. You'll be blessed when you come
- 3:06in and blessed when you go out. The Lord will grant that the
- 3:10enemies who rise up against you will be defeated before you.
- 3:14They will come at you from One Direction and flee from you in
- 3:19seven. The Lord will send a blessing on
- 3:22your barns and on everything you put your hand to.
- 3:26The Lord your God will bless you in the land He is giving you.
- 3:30The Lord will establish you as His holy people, as He promised
- 3:34you on oath. If you keep the commands of the
- 3:38Lord your God and walk in obedience to Him, then all the
- 3:42people on earth will see that you are called by the name of
- 3:46the Lord, and they will fear you.
- 3:49The Lord will grant you abundant prosperity in the fruit of your
- 3:54womb, the young of your livestock, and the crops of your
- 3:58ground in the land He swore to your ancestors to give you.
- 4:03The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse of His bounty, to
- 4:06send rain on your land in season and to bless the work of your
- 4:10hands. You will lend to many nations,
- 4:13but will borrow from none. The Lord will make you the head,
- 4:18not the tail. If you pay attention to the
- 4:21commands of the Lord your God that I give you this day and
- 4:24carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at
- 4:29the bottom. Do not turn aside from any of
- 4:32the commands I give you today, to the right or to the left,
- 4:37following other gods and serving them.
- 4:40So I wonder if this is like on Mount Ebal they were, let's see
- 4:53on the chapter 27 of Deuteronomy, the commands, I
- 4:57think right on all the this is what Deuteronomy 27 three says
- 5:03right on them all the words of this law.
- 5:06When you have crossed over and enter the land, your God has
- 5:08given you a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the Lord
- 5:11your God, your ancestors promised.
- 5:15So the laws are in Deuteronomy and it has.
- 5:26I was looking to see like a listing of all of the laws.
- 5:29If we look at chapters first fruits and tithes and there's a
- 5:37lot of laws that go back to Deuteronomy 25, Deuteronomy 24
- 5:45and Deuteronomy 23. There's there's a lot of there
- 5:50are so many different laws. So anyway, God gave all these
- 5:54laws to Moses and then he said if you follow them, there will
- 5:59be blessings. If you don't follow them, there
- 6:02are consequences. So here's what the consequences
- 6:06are. However, if you do not obey the
- 6:08Lord your God and do not carefully follow all His
- 6:11commands and degrees I'm giving you today, all these curses will
- 6:15come on you and overtake you. You'll be cursed in the city and
- 6:19cursed in the country. Your basket and your kneading
- 6:21dough will be cursed. The fruit of your room womb will
- 6:24be cursed, and the crops of your land, and the calves of your
- 6:27herds, and the lambs of your flocks.
- 6:30You will be cursed when you come in and cursed when you go out.
- 6:33The Lord will send on you curses, confusion, and rebuke in
- 6:38everything you put your hand to, until you are destroyed and come
- 6:42to sudden ruin because of the evil you have done in forsaking
- 6:48Him. The Lord will plague you with
- 6:50diseases until He has destroyed you from the land you are
- 6:54entering. The Lord will strike you with
- 6:57yeast disease, with fever and inflammation and scorching heat
- 7:01and drought, with blight and mildew, which will plague you
- 7:05until you perish. The sky over your head will be
- 7:08bronze, the ground beneath you iron.
- 7:12The Lord will turn the reign of your country into dust and
- 7:16powder. It will come down from the skies
- 7:22until you are destroyed. The Lord will cause you to be
- 7:25defeated before your enemies. You will come at them from One
- 7:28Direction, but flee from them in seven, and you will become a
- 7:32thing of horror to all the nations of the earth.
- 7:35Your carcasses will be food for all the birds and the wild
- 7:39animals, and there will be no one to frighten them away.
- 7:43The Lord will afflict you with the boils of Egypt, with tumors,
- 7:48festering sores, and the itch from which you cannot be cured.
- 7:53The Lord will affect you with madness, blindness, and
- 7:56confusion of mind. At midday you will grope around
- 8:00like a blind person in the dark. You will be unsuccessful in
- 8:04everything you do day after day. You will be robbed and no one to
- 8:08rescue you. You will be pledged to be
- 8:11married to a woman, but another will take her and rape her.
- 8:14You will build a house, but you will not live in it.
- 8:17You will plant a vineyard, but you will not even begin to enjoy
- 8:21its fruit. Your ox will be slaughtered
- 8:23before your eyes, but you will eat none of it.
- 8:26Your donkey will be forcibly taking from you, taken from you,
- 8:31and will not be returned. Your sheep will be given to your
- 8:33enemies, and no one will rescue them.
- 8:35Your sons and daughters will be given to another nation, and you
- 8:38will wear out your eyes, watching for them day after day,
- 8:42powerless to lift a hand. A people that you do not know
- 8:46will eat what your land and labor produce, and you will have
- 8:49nothing but cruel in all your days.
- 8:52The sights you see will drive you mad.
- 8:55The Lord will afflict your knees and legs with painful boils that
- 8:58cannot be cured, spreading from the soles of your feet to the
- 9:02top of your head. The Lord will drive you and the
- 9:05king set over you to a nation unknown to you or your
- 9:09ancestors. There you will worship other
- 9:11gods, gods of wood and stone. You will become a thing of
- 9:15horror, a byword, and an object of ridicule among the peoples
- 9:19where the Lord will drive you. You will so much seed in the
- 9:22field, but you will harvest little, because locusts will
- 9:25devour it. You will vineyards and cultivate
- 9:28them, but you will not drink the wine or gather the grapes
- 9:30because worms will eat them. You will have olive trees
- 9:34throughout your country, but you will not use the oil because the
- 9:36olives will drop off. You will have sons and
- 9:39daughters, but you will not keep them because they will go into
- 9:42captivity. Swarms of locusts will take over
- 9:45all your trees and your crops of your land.
- 9:47The foreigners who reside among you will rise above you, higher
- 9:50and higher, but you will sink lower and lower.
- 9:53They will lend to you, but you will not lend to them.
- 9:56They will be the head, but you will be the tail.
- 9:58All these curses will come on you.
- 10:00They will pursue you and overtake you until you are
- 10:03destroyed because you did not obey the Lord your God and
- 10:06observe the commands and decrees He gave you.
- 10:09They will be a sign and a wonder and your descendant to you and
- 10:14your descendants forever, because you did not serve the
- 10:17Lord your God joyfully and gladfully and gladly.
- 10:21In the time of prosperity. Therefore, in hunger and thirst,
- 10:25in nakedness and dire poverty, you will serve the enemies the
- 10:28Lord sends against you. He will put an iron yoke on your
- 10:32neck until He has destroyed you. The Lord will bring a nation
- 10:35against you from far away, from the ends of the earth, like an
- 10:38eagle swooping down. A nation whose language you will
- 10:43not understand. A fierce looking nation with
- 10:46respect with without respect for the old are be for the young.
- 10:52They will devour the young of your livestock and the crops of
- 10:55your land until you are destroyed.
- 10:57They will leave you no grain, new wine or olive oil, nor any
- 11:01calves of your herds or lambs of your flocks, until you are
- 11:05ruined. They will lay siege to all the
- 11:07cities throughout your land until the high fortified walls
- 11:10in which you trust fall down. They will besiege all the cities
- 11:14throughout the land the Lord your God is giving you.
- 11:17Because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during
- 11:20the siege. You will eat the fruit of the
- 11:22room, the flesh of the sons and daughters the Lord has given
- 11:25you. Even the most gentle and
- 11:27sensitive man among you will have no compassion on his own
- 11:31brother or the wife he loves, or his surviving children, and he
- 11:35will not give to one of them any of the flesh of his children
- 11:38that he is eating. It will be all he has left.
- 11:41Because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during
- 11:44the siege of all your cities. The most gentle and sensitive
- 11:47woman among you, so sensitive and gentle that she would not
- 11:50venture to touch the ground with the sole of her foot, will
- 11:53begrudge the husband she loves and her own son or daughter, the
- 11:57afterbirth from her womb and the children she bears for in her
- 12:01dire need she intends to eat them secretly because of the
- 12:04suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege
- 12:08of your cities. If you do not carefully follow
- 12:11all the words of this law which are written in the book, and do
- 12:14not Revere this glorious and awesome name, the Lord your God.
- 12:18The Lord will send fearful plagues on you and your
- 12:20descendants, harsh and prolonged disasters, and severe and
- 12:25lingering illnesses. He will bring on you all the
- 12:28diseases of Egypt that you dreaded, and they will cling to
- 12:31you. The Lord will also bring on you
- 12:33every kind of sickness and disaster not recorded in the
- 12:36book of the Law until you are destroyed.
- 12:40You who were as numerous as the stars in the sky will be left
- 12:43but a few in number because you did not obey the Lord your God.
- 12:47Just as it pleased the Lord to make you prosper and increase
- 12:51the number, so it will please him to ruin and destroy you.
- 12:55You will be upright from the land you entered to possess.
- 12:58Then the Lord will scatter you among the nations, from one end
- 13:02of the earth to the other. There you will worship other
- 13:05gods, gods of wood and stone, which neither you nor your
- 13:09ancestors have known. Among these nations.
- 13:12There you will find no response, no resting place for the sole of
- 13:15your foot. There the Lord will give you an
- 13:17anxious mind, eyes weary with longing, and a despairing heart.
- 13:22You will live in constant suspense, filled with dread both
- 13:26day, both night and day, never sure of your life.
- 13:30In the morning you will say, if it were only evening, and in the
- 13:32evening if it were only morning. Because of the terror that will
- 13:35fill your hearts and the sights that your eyes will see.
- 13:38The Lord will send you back in ships to Egypt on a journey I
- 13:42said you should never make again.
- 13:45There you will offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as male
- 13:49and female slaves, but no one will buy you.
- 13:53So that's pretty horrible like what God said about these.
- 13:59You know, people may say that, you know, if they say like the
- 14:03Jews are there a chosen one or Israel is the chosen 1 and God
- 14:07did choose Israel, But look at the there's blessings and
- 14:13there's also curses and it does tie to their obedience and, and
- 14:17primarily it seems like they're worshipping of God and knowing
- 14:21who God is and not having false gods.
- 14:23It seems like that triggers most of it is when they turn to false
- 14:27gods. There was also I remembered and
- 14:31I had took me a while to find it, but I remembered that there
- 14:34were also requirements for the kings of Israel, what they
- 14:38should do. And many of the kings did not
- 14:41obey what God laid out through Moses.
- 14:45And this is what he said like in Deuteronomy 17 starting at verse
- 14:4914. This is about the kings of them.
- 14:53When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you and have
- 14:56taken possession of it and settled in it.
- 14:59And you say, let us set a king over us like all the nations
- 15:02around us. Be sure to O you a king, the
- 15:07Lord your God chooses. He must be from among your
- 15:11fellow Israelites. Do not place a foreigner over
- 15:15you, one that is not an Israelite.
- 15:19When I read that I think about I wonder if that's going to come
- 15:23into play in the future. Is there going to be a foreigner
- 15:26placed over at any point or will they always obey this?
- 15:30I'm not really sure, but it's just interesting that I don't
- 15:34know that they've ever had a foreigner placed over them who
- 15:37is not an Israelite. And it should be a king that God
- 15:42chooses. And that was, I guess it was
- 15:46first David and then, well, I guess first there was Saul, then
- 15:52David, then Solomon. And then they didn't care about
- 15:56what God was choosing. They just started appointing
- 15:59kings and that's when they had the 10 tribes were separated
- 16:02from 2 tribes. And I think the southern tribes
- 16:07maybe did have God's influence over them, but the northern
- 16:11tribes, the 10 tribes did not. They were just doing whatever
- 16:15they deemed was right. So and Even so, like when you
- 16:19think about how David lived and how Solomon lived, I don't even
- 16:23think that they even complied with what God said the way the
- 16:27king should be. Because in Deuteronomy 17 verse
- 16:3016, it said the king moreover, must not acquire great numbers
- 16:35of horses for himself. And that we know Solomon had a
- 16:40lot of horses. Or make the people return to
- 16:43Egypt to get more of them. For the Lord has told you, you
- 16:46are not to go back that way again.
- 16:49You must not take many wives again.
- 16:52This is something that we know Solomon did and David had pretty
- 16:55many as well or his heart will be LED astray.
- 16:58We know that did happen to Solomon.
- 17:02He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold.
- 17:06That's another thing that seems like Solomon did.
- 17:08He had what was it like 666 talents that were given to him
- 17:14by the queen of Sheba. And so that's again interesting.
- 17:18It's like he's be broke, all of these things.
- 17:23When he takes the throne of his Kingdom, he is to write for
- 17:26himself on a scroll a copy of this law taken from that of the
- 17:30Levitical priest. Now I just wonder.
- 17:34I mean, it seems like David did this because in a lot of the
- 17:38Psalms he says, I meditate on your laws day and night.
- 17:43So it seems like David was obedient to this Solomon.
- 17:48I don't really know because if he did that, he disregarded a
- 17:53lot of what it said just when we talked about the horses and the
- 17:56wives and so forth. And, and then we also know that
- 18:01in the Book of Kings, I believe, I don't remember which area, but
- 18:06when I think it was Josiah who is the young king who came to
- 18:12be, But he discovered the book of Law in the temple and
- 18:16realized that they hadn't followed it in I don't know how
- 18:20many years, like hundreds of years maybe.
- 18:23And so they all decided that they were going to follow it at
- 18:27the time of his reign. But then again, they fell away
- 18:31from it again. So all the laws that God gives,
- 18:36it seems like they are basically guardrails are protected their
- 18:43protection for us if we obey them, it you know, if we obey
- 18:47them, things will go well with us and then if we disobey them
- 18:51or disregard them, then we will have consequences.
- 18:55Even, you know, this is written to the Israelites, but I believe
- 18:59it also affects us when we get to the 10 commandments that that
- 19:03God will. You know, there are
- 19:06consequences, whether they're just like a consequence of the
- 19:09sin that we do, but they really are guardrails.
- 19:12Like if we don't break God's 10 commandments, then things we
- 19:17won't have the consequences that go along with that.
- 19:20But I guess there there are blessings and also curses to
- 19:26being the chosen one of God, like the chosen community that
- 19:30God chose to work through and glorify himself through, which
- 19:34was Israel. So, you know, people would say,
- 19:38well, you know, maybe they were the favorite ones.
- 19:40God doesn't have favorites, but to choose someone doesn't mean
- 19:44that's the favorite. It just means that they are
- 19:46chosen ones and God chose them of all to fulfill His word.
- 19:53And and then we see that they didn't successfully do this, and
- 19:59probably none of us would because we're all human and we
- 20:03all make mistakes. So it, you know, it, it may be
- 20:08good to like have all these blessings pronounced, but think
- 20:11about like all the curses that are also there.
- 20:14It's like there's good and bad that come with it.
- 20:17And do these curses necessarily apply to all other people or
- 20:20they just to the Israelites? It seems like they're just to
- 20:23the Israelites. Then it says, so when he takes
- 20:28the throne of his Kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll
- 20:33a copy of this law taken from that of the Levitical priest.
- 20:37It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his
- 20:42life so that he may learn to Revere the Lord his God and
- 20:47follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees
- 20:52and not consider himself better than his fellow Israelites and
- 20:56turn from the law to the right or to the left.
- 20:59Then he and his descendants will reign a long time over his
- 21:02Kingdom in Israel. So we see that God did fulfill
- 21:06this. You know, all the kings that
- 21:09didn't take this copy of the scroll and read it, reflect on
- 21:15it every day. He their descendants, you know,
- 21:20eventually none of the descendants are ruling it over
- 21:25Israel because first it was the northern Kingdom that was
- 21:30conquered by the Assyrians. And then like what Jeremiah is
- 21:34talking about is the southern Kingdom and they were going to
- 21:37be conquered by the Babylonians. So anyway, Jeremiah is actually
- 21:42warning them again, you know, that they need to obey what God
- 21:47said, and they were at a point where they were not in
- 21:51obedience. So we'll go back to Jeremiah
- 21:54Chapter 11, verse 9. Then the Lord said to me, there
- 21:58is a conspiracy among the people of Judah and those who live in
- 22:01Jerusalem. They have returned to the sins
- 22:04of their ancestors who refused to listen to my words.
- 22:08They have followed other gods. Seems like idolatry is the
- 22:13primary thing that God is offended by and to serve them.
- 22:17Both Israel and Judah have broken the covenant I made with
- 22:21their ancestors. Therefore this is what the Lord
- 22:24says. I will bring on them a disaster
- 22:27they cannot escape. Although they cry out to me, I
- 22:31will not listen to them. The towns of Judah and the
- 22:34people of Jerusalem will go and cry out to the gods to whom they
- 22:41burn incense. So they are burning incense to
- 22:44fake gods, but they will not help them at all when disaster
- 22:49strikes. You Judah, have so many gods as
- 22:53you have towns and the altars you have set up to burn incense,
- 22:57and to that shameful God bail are as many as the streets of
- 23:02Jerusalem. Do not pray for these people or
- 23:05offer any plea or petition for them, because I will not listen
- 23:09when they call to me in the time of their distress.
- 23:12Now that's kind of I'm going to read something about that.
- 23:17When, when, when does God refuse to hear our prayers?
- 23:21God sees, hears, and knows everything, including our
- 23:25prayers. Nothing escapes his attention.
- 23:29Why, then, did God say He would not listen to the people's cries
- 23:33for help? There are several possible
- 23:36reasons. In this case, God did not
- 23:38respond because judgment was unavoidable.
- 23:41Judah had disobeyed God's laws and ignored his pleas for so
- 23:45long that judgment was in effect already on the way.
- 23:49Their cries were too little, too late.
- 23:52Several times, God explicitly told Jeremiah not to pray for
- 23:57the people. In chapter 711 and 14, God said
- 24:03that not even Moses and Samuel could have persuaded him to
- 24:08relent. That's in chapter 15.
- 24:11It's also possible that people sometimes sabotage their own
- 24:15prayers, causing them to be ineffective.
- 24:18The Bible mentions several attitudes and actions that can
- 24:21short circuit our prayers. Sin is #1 disobedience is
- 24:28another one, hypocrisy and insincerity is another one.
- 24:32Pride, wrong motives, lack of faith, and unloving attitudes
- 24:40towards one's spouse. Finally, that.
- 24:44Finally, what sometimes appears to be no answer to prayer may
- 24:48actually be a delayed answer. Other times, God may deny our
- 24:53request in order to give us something better than we knew to
- 24:58ask for. So we'll go back.
- 25:03Let's see, what is my beloved doing in my temple as she, with
- 25:08many others, works out her evil schemes.
- 25:11Can consecrated meat avert your punishment?
- 25:14When you engage in your witness wickedness, then you rejoice.
- 25:19The Lord called you a thriving olive tree with fruit beautiful
- 25:22in form, but with the roar of a mighty storm He will set it on
- 25:28fire and its branches will be broken.
- 25:30The Lord Almighty who planted you has secreed disaster for
- 25:35you, because the people of both Israel and Judah have done evil
- 25:39and aroused by anger, by burning incense to bail.
- 25:44Because the Lord revealed their plot to me, I knew it, for at
- 25:48that time He showed me what they were doing.
- 25:50I had been like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter.
- 25:53I did not realize that they had plotted against me, saying, Let
- 25:57us destroy the tree and its fruit, let us cut him off from
- 26:00the land of the living, that His name be remembered no more.
- 26:04But you, Lord Almighty, who judge righteously and test the
- 26:07heart and mind, let me see your vengeance on them.
- 26:12For to you I have admitted my cause.
- 26:16Therefore this is what the Lord says about the people of
- 26:20Anathoth. Anathoth was a city in Benjamin
- 26:24where Jeremiah was born. So who these people were
- 26:29threatening to kill you, saying do not prophecy in the name of
- 26:32the Lord, or you will die by our hands.
- 26:36Therefore, this is what the Lord Almighty says.
- 26:39I will punish them. Their young men will die by the
- 26:42sword, their sons and daughters by famine.
- 26:45Not even a remnant will be left to them, because I will bring
- 26:49disaster on the people of Anaphor in the year of their
- 26:53punishment. And that's the end of Chapter
- 26:5611. I'll read the questions and
- 26:59answers and then we will wrap up this one.
- 27:02Didn't people know what this covenant said?
- 27:06Sadly, God's people had forgotten their spiritual
- 27:09foundation. The covenant of Moses and its
- 27:12two way promises between God and His people.
- 27:15Jeremiah was challenging the people to renew their commitment
- 27:18to their covenant responsibilities.
- 27:22What were the curses of the covenant?
- 27:23God had clearly stated from the beginning that there would be
- 27:27blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience, and
- 27:31Deuteronomy chapter 28 the curses included utter disaster
- 27:35for the land and its people if they rejected God and worshipped
- 27:39idols. How many gods did Judah serve?
- 27:44It is impossible to say. For centuries, they had been
- 27:47influenced by their Canaanite neighbors who had an estimated
- 27:502000 to 3000 different gods. Pagan nations at that time
- 27:55typically believed that each town had its own God to protect
- 28:00and provide for its people. Perhaps Judah had adopted this
- 28:04same idea. Is it sometimes wrong to pray?
- 28:07This was a unique case. Most of the time, we err on the
- 28:11side of praying too little rather than praying too much.
- 28:15God told Jeremiah not to pray for the people because they had
- 28:19already been judged. They had refused to repent while
- 28:23they had the opportunity. Now it was too late.
- 28:27God emphasized his resolve by saying, in effect, I don't want
- 28:31to hear any more about it. My mind is made-up.
- 28:34I think this is something that we need to think about with
- 28:38ourselves and our relationship with God.
- 28:42We don't want to keep pushing God and testing Him.
- 28:44If we know there's things that God wants us to do in our lives
- 28:46and we don't do it, then how long is God going to be patient
- 28:52with us? He is very patient.
- 28:53But there's a certain point, just like with these Israelites,
- 28:56where He said, Nope, that's it. Now you're going to have
- 28:59judgment and that's where God doesn't have favoritism.
- 29:03If He does that with the Israelites, don't you think
- 29:05He'll do that with all who are not Israelites?
- 29:10So did God make a mistake by planting Israel?
- 29:14Absolutely not. From the beginning of God's
- 29:16relationship with Israel, it was clear that Israel was going to
- 29:19forsake her covenant with the Lord and face many curses as a
- 29:23result. The ultimate curse was
- 29:25banishment from the land, which was the focus of Jeremiah's
- 29:28warnings. God's people would then return
- 29:30to the Lord, and the Lord would restore them.
- 29:33Finally, the Lord would circumcise their hearts, which
- 29:36points to Jeremiah's promise of a new covenant, a law written on
- 29:40the heart rather than on stone. God knew all of this before He
- 29:45planted Israel. Is it right to pray for
- 29:49vengeance? Some people may be troubled by
- 29:52this passage. However, we should realize that
- 29:54Jeremiah was praying not for his own vengeance, but for God's.
- 30:03It is also important to recognize that God's vengeance
- 30:06does not arise from revenge, but from justice.
- 30:10People who oppose God bring judgment on themselves.
- 30:16What was behind the murder this murderer plot?
- 30:20Men from Jeremiah's hometown wanted to halt his influence,
- 30:25probably because he had been undermining theirs.
- 30:29He supported the King's reforms, including the destruction of
- 30:33altars to their local God. Jeremiah also endorsed the
- 30:37priest at the temple in Jerusalem over the idolatrous
- 30:42priest of Anathoth. So that concludes Chapter 11
- 30:47from Jeremiah.
