- 0:03The Street Fighter movie is okay. I'm talking,
- 0:08of course, about the 2026 movie titled Street
- 0:11Fighter, not the glorious one from the 90s and
- 0:14not that trash from a decade or so ago that was
- 0:16strictly about Chun -Li. This is the new one.
- 0:19And yeah, it's the first revival of Street Fighter
- 0:22since we've had this sort of renaissance of video
- 0:26game movies that was kicked off by the likes
- 0:28of Sonic and the Super Mario Bros. movie, where
- 0:30video game movies are suddenly good. This isn't
- 0:34in that category, I don't think. It's not as
- 0:36good as a Detective Pikachu or a Sonic 1, 2 or
- 0:413. And most Sonic movies have got better as they've
- 0:43gone on. But it is pretty good. And I actually
- 0:45think it's very much sort of on par of a piece
- 0:48with the Mortal Kombat movies we've had recently.
- 0:53This is an unscripted chat. I just wanted to
- 0:55talk about the movie while it's fresh in my mind.
- 0:58And so I just thought I would ramble a little
- 1:00bit here. Through that, I figured you guys could
- 1:02decide if you're going to check out to the cinema
- 1:04yourselves to see it, or if you're going to wait
- 1:06for video on demand, or if you're not going to
- 1:08watch it at all. Now, full and important context,
- 1:11I really like Street Fighter. I had a Street
- 1:15Fighter arcade cabinet at my wedding, something
- 1:19which you can read about on the Respec Patreon
- 1:22page. I wrote an exclusive article about all
- 1:25that, about how I bought video games into my
- 1:27wedding. I've got two Street Fighter arcade cabinets
- 1:29in my house that I... bought and rescued from
- 1:32arcade closures in Japan. I really like this
- 1:35series. I'm not like a pro player or anything,
- 1:38but I don't know. There's something about Street
- 1:40Fighter that's always just spoken to me, always
- 1:42just really, really grabbed me. And so these
- 1:45are characters and this is a world that I love.
- 1:47And so obviously I was going into this movie
- 1:48invested and you need to keep that in mind. But
- 1:51that also does mean that I'm potentially a little
- 1:54bit hard as a please because I want to see versions
- 1:56of these characters that I recognize and that
- 1:58I appreciate. So keep that. in mind as we go
- 2:02into spoiler three me just thinking and talking
- 2:05off the dome about what i liked about this movie
- 2:08so first of all we've got to talk about the casting
- 2:12the casting is absolutely tremendous the meme
- 2:17that you've heard is the idea that they didn't
- 2:19just cast these characters but they found them
- 2:22and i absolutely do think that that is true you
- 2:26know This is something where perhaps it does
- 2:29differ from the recent Mortal Kombat films, where
- 2:31I feel like there's two elements at play there.
- 2:33The first is that I actually don't think the
- 2:35Mortal Kombat cast, with a few exceptions, is
- 2:38really as immediately iconic and recognizable
- 2:40as the Street Fighter cast. I think that's just
- 2:45true. But also through that, I think they struggled
- 2:48to find actors who could really embody those
- 2:52roles in that same way. And when they did, it
- 2:54was a slam junk. So Kyle Urban as... johnny cage
- 2:58is perfect but in this movie they've pretty much
- 3:02managed that level of casting for everyone even
- 3:06relatively minor roles with a few exceptions
- 3:08which i will get into when i talk about the things
- 3:10i didn't like so much so when you look at that
- 3:14dude playing zangief incredible he just looks
- 3:17like him he embodies him he moves like him dalsim
- 3:21just the same and those two for instance are
- 3:23more minor characters in the story you can sense
- 3:26that there was an attempt to ensure that the
- 3:30main eight world warriors were all here. So some
- 3:33of them are crowbarred in interesting ways. E.
- 3:35Honda, characters like that. Some of that works
- 3:37better than others. But all these characters,
- 3:40you sort of, you look at them and you go, yep,
- 3:42that is Honda. That is Balrog. 50 Cent feels
- 3:46like he was born to play Balrog. And I think
- 3:48especially that has to be said for Dalsim and
- 3:52Chun -Li. I think absolutely perfect. And I think...
- 3:55Also, although people really do not like Daniel
- 3:59Shultz, I believe his name is, who's playing
- 4:01Dan Hibiki, because he's got political views
- 4:05that people really don't like and stuff, which
- 4:06is totally fair enough to dislike someone for
- 4:08those reasons. But I think he's pretty nailed
- 4:13on for Dan, really. I buy him as that sort of
- 4:18slightly pathetic joke of a geezer. And I think
- 4:21Ken is excellent. Ryu? he gets the stoicism right
- 4:25but i wish there was a bit more to him i think
- 4:28that's always problem with rio because he's so
- 4:30stoic and quiet it runs the risk of him becoming
- 4:33a bit boring and this is ultimately a movie that's
- 4:35about rio so that's one of the things that is
- 4:38less exciting in that sense is i just wish there
- 4:43was a bit more from rio characters that i didn't
- 4:46like as much i think the performance as bison
- 4:49is spot on there's a vibe there's a creepiness
- 4:53I think some people have been turned off a little
- 4:55bit by no specific spoilers, but they sort of
- 4:59make Bison out to be a bit of a fetishist. He's
- 5:01definitely a weird guy. He seems to get off on
- 5:04pain, on inflicting pain. Sadist, there is a
- 5:09word for that. Alex, there is a word for that.
- 5:12Yeah, the acting works and they get him some
- 5:18iconic sayings from the games and from the other
- 5:20movies as well. David, I forget his surname.
- 5:25You can tell I'm doing this off the dome, can't
- 5:27you? He is a tall bloke, but he's not a big bloke.
- 5:32And unlike others who did train for this movie
- 5:35to pile on the pounds, he didn't do that. And
- 5:38the costume does some for him in terms of big
- 5:39shoulder pads, all the rest. But you can tell
- 5:41he's not that big, which I think makes him not
- 5:44appear as threatening as perhaps you would hope.
- 5:47And there's a funny old thing in this movie where
- 5:49there's a lot of flashback sequences. Too many
- 5:52flashback sequences, arguably. And in the flashback
- 5:55sequences, Bison's really hench. And then it
- 5:57cuts to the live action. You're like, he's not
- 5:59that hench. Whereas everyone else sort of matches
- 6:01their flashback counterparts. And Cammy. I'm
- 6:05a Cammy main. So I've got vested interest in
- 6:08this one. But they sort of... She doesn't have
- 6:11very much to do. She doesn't get to fight, which
- 6:14is a bit of a bummer. And she is... She's sort
- 6:18of Harley Quinn -ized, I guess. She's quipping
- 6:22and she's got like both sexual and enemy tension
- 6:26routinely. And, you know, sort of weird sexual
- 6:30tension with Bison as well, actually. And she's
- 6:33cackling and laughing and being mean. And Eric
- 6:36Andre's kissing her boots the first time you
- 6:37see her and stuff like that. And the visual look
- 6:40is perfect. Probably she's a little bit too tan,
- 6:43I guess. Can be usually paler than that. But
- 6:45that's fine. But I... So the visual and the look
- 6:49and the posture and stuff is great, but I wish
- 6:51I'd seen her fighting. And I don't love the Harley
- 6:56Quinn -ization of Cammy. However, this is obviously
- 6:59Killer Bee era Cammy when she works for Bison.
- 7:02And the whole thing is they're meant to be, her
- 7:04and all the dolls are brainwashed, right? And
- 7:06so maybe that's the personality that this fetishist,
- 7:09slightly weirdo Bison wants in his dolls. And
- 7:11you also get that from Julie, the other main
- 7:16doll, brilliant by the way throughout like a
- 7:19character that doesn't have many lines doesn't
- 7:21have much to say but has quite a lot to do in
- 7:23terms of being a physical presence in scenes
- 7:25and also that actress is an amazing martial artist
- 7:28and they make use of that and they make use of
- 7:31that but they do a thing where they're all fanatically
- 7:37devoted to bison so like when trinity's undercover
- 7:40and she's becoming one of bison's girls so to
- 7:43speak and you can see they're getting it angry
- 7:45and getting jealous. And I actually think that's
- 7:47quite an interesting take on the doll thing.
- 7:50The question is, were they doing a sequel? You
- 7:52know, I think in a sequel, you want to get Cammy
- 7:54out from under that and Julie and any others
- 7:57and get Cammy in the green and all the rest.
- 7:59But we'll see if that is a thing. But yeah, I
- 8:04didn't like those two as much. Obviously, I've
- 8:06got skin in the game on the Cammy front. I mentioned
- 8:09the flashbacks. So I liked the movie. its ability
- 8:15to try to really all -encompassing tell as much
- 8:19of the Street Fighter lore to all the relevant
- 8:20characters as possible. However, there's too
- 8:24much story going on here, the movie's already
- 8:26too long, and then you have these anime flashbacks
- 8:29that it's cutting to constantly. And it's a really
- 8:33interesting choice, and they're beautifully produced,
- 8:35hand -drawn anime sequences. But, goodness me,
- 8:40it does start to become quite intense. And I
- 8:43think... the movie can sometimes feel way too
- 8:46convoluted for its own good as a direct result
- 8:48of the amount of flashback things they've got
- 8:51going on at one point they make a really weird
- 8:53choice where they show you the end of a conversation
- 8:57between rio and between ken and chun -li and
- 9:00literally not 90 seconds two minutes later they
- 9:06give you a flashback to the middle of that conversation
- 9:08where you actually have the context of the thing
- 9:10they just said They said, why didn't you just
- 9:11show us that entire conversation as a scene?
- 9:14There's some really weird editing stuff going
- 9:16on. And I think that's where some of the more
- 9:18proper film criticism is coming from, is that
- 9:21when you watch it as a movie, it feels convoluted
- 9:25as hell. And I don't know if that's because,
- 9:27you know, the guy who directed this, his probably
- 9:30most famous directing gig prior to this was directing
- 9:32a load of episodes of The Eric Andre Show. It's
- 9:35also very chaotic. And this feels like a very,
- 9:37very chaotic movie. I think it works well enough.
- 9:39I think it's inevitably going to work better
- 9:42if you are a Street Fighter fan and you know
- 9:44the characters and stuff. But yeah, it's a bit
- 9:48of a mess. It's a bit all over the place. It's
- 9:51also probably 15, 20 minutes too long. There's
- 9:55entire characters you could cut. Chun -Li has
- 9:57an Interpol sidekick where... this guy's in the
- 10:00movie a little bit and i'm genuinely like these
- 10:03all could have been phone conversations even
- 10:05with like a voice without cutting to anyone and
- 10:09you could have cut some of those scenes and sort
- 10:11of a showdown between two characters that is
- 10:14sort of the i guess you'd say it's the penultimate
- 10:16fight in the movie and i don't get why it's there
- 10:19it doesn't actually you could have you could
- 10:23have had the scene that leads up to it which
- 10:25is a big emotional scene and then cut the fight
- 10:27and that sounds weird to say to cut a fight But
- 10:29it just felt superfluous. It felt like the script
- 10:31required those two particular characters to fight.
- 10:35And so they found the most convoluted way possible
- 10:37to do it. I think the fighting's good. I saw
- 10:41some people saying they don't think the choreography's
- 10:43good. I think it's pretty fun. And they do a
- 10:45great job of bringing some of the video game
- 10:47moves into the movie world. In fact, most of
- 10:50the video game moves, really. Everyone gets to
- 10:52use a lot of their signature moves. I think some
- 10:55people will probably be upset that Guile is largely
- 10:58comic relief. But, you know. We had a whole movie
- 11:01where Guile was the main character. So I think
- 11:02it's okay for Ryu, Ken, Chun to have their moment
- 11:07in the spotlight instead. Really like Dhalsim.
- 11:10Just acts as excellent. Look is perfect. But
- 11:13also I really enjoy that he's in that mentor
- 11:16role, which is often where they place him in
- 11:19the comics and stuff like that. He's the wise
- 11:21one of the hero side of Street Fighter. And then
- 11:25I guess my greatest criticism gripe, and hey
- 11:29-ho, it's similar to Mortal Kombat again. I think
- 11:31the comparison to that Mortal Kombat reboot,
- 11:33which obviously then just more recently got the
- 11:35sequel, is an adept one. Because another problem
- 11:40shared with that movie is that it does just sort
- 11:44of end. Some would say it ends right as it feels
- 11:48like it's getting started, which isn't ideal.
- 11:50It does feel like they set everything up. And
- 11:53don't get me wrong, there is a particular story
- 11:54here that is set up in the intro of the movie
- 11:57and to some degree resolved by the end. And it's
- 12:01a very familiar Street Fighter story. But actually,
- 12:05the other storyline, it's not so much that there's
- 12:08an A storyline and a B storyline. There's sort
- 12:09of two A storylines. And one of them sort of
- 12:13gets to a resolution point of a sword. And the
- 12:15other one doesn't really resolve at all. That's
- 12:18sort of the shocker. They are so reliant on the
- 12:21idea of getting a sequel. And I think we don't
- 12:24know with the box office stuff if this will get
- 12:26a sequel. I actually think how we look at this
- 12:28movie will be greatly determined by whether it
- 12:31gets a sequel or not. Because I think if it gets
- 12:33a sequel, what you'll actually have is this as
- 12:37a tee -up to something much more exciting that
- 12:40brings in more characters. I think they dial
- 12:44in things like the ability to do the combat and
- 12:46how they shoot the combat. How they fold the
- 12:50story from the games in, the look of the characters,
- 12:52the humor too. Because it's a movie that is at
- 12:55pains to be funny. And it often is funny. Although
- 12:57I think it's a style and era of humor that will
- 13:02appeal more to people of a certain age than others.
- 13:06Again, you can definitely tell that the director
- 13:09of this movie directed a lot of the Eric Andre
- 13:11show. And a lot of the best laughs in the movie
- 13:12come from Eric Andre, who's playing Don Savage,
- 13:15an announcer character, the tournament announcer
- 13:17and judge. But, yeah, in a sequel, they'd be
- 13:22able to dial all that stuff in. But, but, but,
- 13:25but, will they get one? That's the big question.
- 13:30I really hope they do because I think there's
- 13:32the kernel of something really excellent here.
- 13:34And I think the casting is so good. And I look
- 13:36at it and I'm like, yeah, I can imagine what
- 13:39a sequel would be. You would probably do leftover
- 13:43bits of the Street Fighter 2 story combined with
- 13:46bits of the Street Fighter 4 story. I think you've
- 13:49got to do Juri because she's the... most iconic
- 13:53non -Street Fighter 2 character, I think. You
- 13:56can make an argument for Sakura and people, but
- 13:58I really think Juri's the one that's really cut
- 14:00through. Juri's now in that group where I don't
- 14:02think there will be a Street Fighter game that
- 14:04she's not in going forward. But you could probably
- 14:09lean into the cage, do this, you know, the Korean
- 14:11culture wave that we've got. You know, maybe
- 14:15she's... maybe there's some weird K -pop connection
- 14:18going on. That's what I'd probably do if I was
- 14:20doing a cinematic version of that character.
- 14:21Anyway, the fact that I'm talking about this,
- 14:23I think speaks to the nature of the movie, right?
- 14:27Where it works great as a setup, but it's, you
- 14:30know what it sort of feels like to me in a weird
- 14:31way, although it's not as good as this, don't
- 14:33get me wrong, but it's sort of like, you know
- 14:34how with Battlestar Galactica, they did the mini
- 14:36series and that was like, you know, the feature
- 14:38length episode, episodes, and then that led into
- 14:41the series. This almost feels like the Street
- 14:45Fighter mini. that then leads into the main thing.
- 14:50And I don't think it would work as a TV show.
- 14:52I think the movie format is best for the characters
- 14:54and the story. They've got stuff like that. But
- 14:57it feels, the feeling you get is a lot like the
- 15:00feeling at the end of Battlestar miniseries where
- 15:02you're like, oh, okay, the journey has begun.
- 15:05And literally, in some ways, the journey begins
- 15:08as the credits roll, which is, you know, an interesting
- 15:12proposition. Oh, and the soundtrack's excellent.
- 15:15I think the soundtrack's really good. I always
- 15:17would rather they, if you're going to invoke
- 15:20the video game tunes, then go all in and use
- 15:24them quite a lot in that Mario movie where this
- 15:26is more like the Sonic movie where it does its
- 15:28own thing and it's actually a really good and
- 15:31unique score. But every now and then you get
- 15:34a little snippet of Guile's theme, a little snippet
- 15:37of Ryu's theme, a little snippet of Ken's theme.
- 15:39Works well enough, but I would have liked a wee
- 15:42bit more. if at all possible but hey yeah i think
- 15:46like people have been saying it's absolute garbage
- 15:49and i'm just like i don't personally see it i
- 15:53think of the pantheon of video game movies and
- 15:56i would i would absolutely rather watch this
- 15:59than you know stuff like the the tom holland
- 16:04uncharted movie like it's certainly not anything
- 16:07like those like trash hitman movies they did
- 16:09or you know that awful awful god awful borderlands
- 16:14movie you know or monster hunter rampage all
- 16:19this trash we've had it's probably on par with
- 16:22like there was that 2018 tomb raider movie and
- 16:25that was good but not great and unfortunately
- 16:29that was not good enough to get a sequel for
- 16:31instance um so we'll see how it how it lands
- 16:37but i thought it was good i thought it was fine
- 16:41i thought it was a good time it was fun you can't
- 16:43go into a movie about fighting games expecting
- 16:46a cinematic masterpiece any more than you can
- 16:48go into a fighting game except expecting a story
- 16:51masterpiece it's just it's just fundamentally
- 16:53incompatible with what that is but i really enjoyed
- 16:57it as a street fighter fan i got a lot out of
- 16:59it i look forward to watching it again but it
- 17:02will be i won't go back to the cinema again what
- 17:04i will do is when this comes out on on digital
- 17:07i will buy it straight away and it will go into
- 17:10a wholly parcel of movies where it will be something
- 17:16that me and the lads whip out you know on a night
- 17:20when we've had some drinks and we want to put
- 17:22something on in the background while we're drinking
- 17:24or maybe we want to set up some drinking rules
- 17:26and it'll exist in that space with some classic
- 17:29bond movies and some some older classic video
- 17:31game movies One of my favorite video game movies
- 17:34for that purpose is DOA Dead or Alive, the 2006
- 17:36movie, which don't get me wrong. Again, this
- 17:39is legions ahead of DOA, which is genuinely a
- 17:42sort of so bad. It's good movie. I don't think
- 17:45this is like that. I think it's genuinely good,
- 17:47just flawed, just a bit all over the place. But
- 17:50I think the nature of what they were trying to
- 17:52do, get all those characters in, give everyone
- 17:55their moment in the sun to at least a little
- 17:57degree. It was always going to be the challenge
- 18:00sort of. make the film not feel overstuffed it
- 18:04does feel overstuffed but i think it's a pretty
- 18:07good pretty nice sort of overstuffed so yeah
- 18:11if i was a movie reviewer and i was giving it
- 18:12a score i would give it three stars out of five
- 18:15i think it becomes a four star movie if you really
- 18:18like street fighter but overall fine and i i
- 18:23i really hope it does well enough to get a sequel
- 18:26because i see great potential in this so But
- 18:29my advice to you is if you're at all curious,
- 18:31go and see it. Help them maybe to hit that box
- 18:33office that will let them continue. And perhaps
- 18:36most importantly, let some of these guys continue
- 18:38as these characters. I want to see more of this
- 18:42Chun -Li and this Dhalsim and this Guile and
- 18:48this Ryu and Ken and so on and so forth. So the
- 18:51only way we're going to get that is if we get
- 18:52a sequel. So I really hope it does well. And
- 18:55I don't think I would be saying that. if the
- 18:57movie was as trash as some people have been overreacting
- 18:59and saying it is. So that's the Donaldson take.
