- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Brothers and sisters, welcome to Into the Mysteries of the Rosary, a mini-series of the podcast contemplata.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: We have been going through the mysteries of the Rosary one by one, learning the plan of the mystery with a capital M.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: God's plan to adopt us by grace into his own house.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Each mystery of the rosary pulls back the veil on God's eternal designs a little bit more.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Each mystery is a treasure chest of the truth.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Each mystery is a revelation of God's love for us.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: We turn now to the first luminous mystery, the baptism in the Jordan.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: When God first sent his eternal Son into this world, when Jesus Christ was born of a woman and born under the law, he came to redeem us so that we might receive the grace of adoption.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Even by the age of twelve, Jesus knew his identity as the Son of God, and he was intent on his father's business.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Yet only a privileged few knew the secret Joseph and Mary, her cousin Elizabeth, the shepherds, the magi, Simeon and Anna, and the teachers of the law in the temple who heard Jesus say he must be about his father's business.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Now, in the luminous mysteries the plan of God comes to light for the rest of the world to learn too.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: In the first luminous mystery, John the Baptist is in the desert, preaching repentance and baptizing.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Jesus approaches.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: John almost refuses to baptize him, but Jesus insists.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: It is in order to fulfill all righteousness, he says.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: What did the Lord mean?
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Jesus came into this world with a specific mission from the Father.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: The mission was to save sinners.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Yet he will not save sinners by remaining aloof from us.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Rather, he will save us by bearing in himself the ancient penalty of death on behalf of us all.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Such was the intention Jesus secretly bore in his heart, the intention to bear death on behalf of us all.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: So although Jesus was the sinless one, he agreed nonetheless to identify with sinners, and to be numbered among sinners, and the baptism of repentance.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: The point was not to cleanse him from sin, but to cleanse us from sin.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: It was a prefiguration of another baptism with which he was to be baptized, the baptism of blood on Calvary.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: It was in view of another day yet to come when he would be numbered among sinners, one on his right and the other on his left.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: When he told John the Baptist it was to fulfill all righteousness, he meant he was going down into the waters to fulfill his mission from the Father.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: When he came up from the waters of the Jordan, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit descending upon him in the form of a dove.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: A voice came from heaven.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: You are my beloved Son.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: With you I am well pleased.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: It was the voice of the Father speaking to him personally, and every word the Father says is precious.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: The eternal Father actually called Jesus his Son.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: The Father called him his son.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: The Father called him his beloved son.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: To call him Son names who Jesus is most deeply and most personally.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: To call him my beloved Son is to say Jesus comes from the Father, belongs to the Father, and is called to go to the Father.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: Yet the Father does not simply say my Son, but says my beloved Son.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Jesus is beloved of the Father, especially beloved.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: What a life Jesus knew in the depths of his own heart.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Jesus knew the Father.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: Jesus knew he belonged to the Father.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Jesus knew he was beloved of the Father.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: Yet Jesus did not receive these gifts in order to keep them for himself.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: He came into this world to share them with us.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: He came so that you and I might come to know the Father and His love for us in a similar way.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: His mission was to snatch us from sin, but his mission would not be complete until the prodigal sons of this world were clothed in the best robes with new rings on their fingers.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: You and I receive the best robe and the new ring when we come to know the things of the Father for ourselves.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: You and I receive the best robe when we receive the grace of adoption in our baptism.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: You and I receive the new ring when we come to know the same eternal Father calls us his beloved too.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: Man cannot live without love.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: He remains a being that is incomprehensible for himself.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: His life is senseless if love is not revealed to him, if he does not encounter love, if he does not experience it and make it his own, if he does not participate intimately in it.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: So said Pope Saint John Paul II in his first encyclical, and when he said so, he told the eternal truth.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: If you are going to become the person God created you to be, the first thing you need to know is that you are beloved of the Father.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: Dearly beloved, you are my beloved, the Father says to you.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: You cannot know who you are, and you cannot become who you are called to be, except on the foundation of God's love for you.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: Only when you and I are rooted and grounded in love, rooted and grounded in the truth of God's personal love for each one of us personally.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: Only then will you and I come to know with all the holy ones what is the breadth and the length and the height and the depth of the mystery.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: Only then will you and I really know God's plan for our lives.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: Brothers and sisters, are you aware of what happened to you in your baptism?
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: When you came up from the waters of baptism, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Eternal Father, looked down upon you and said, You are my beloved Son.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: With you I am well pleased.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: For in our baptism each one of us and all, whether male or female, were united to the eternal Son in a new way.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: We were incorporated into his mystical body.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: We began to participate in his life as the eternal son, in a whole new way, like never before.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: God looked down on us and saw his son in us, yet he also saw each of us personally too.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: For our baptism into Christ and our union with him does not illuminate our distinct personalities.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: Rather, it illuminates our personalities and makes us shine with a whole new splendor, the light of grace.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: In baptism, God endows us with the best robe and the new ring and calls us his own.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: He celebrates our personal existence, for he loves us with an everlasting love, and that means he loves you personally.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: Do you believe it?
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: Thank you for listening to this episode of Contemplata.
