- 0:00Aloha. Monday morning in Hawaiʻi. I'm Mele with what's happening today across the islands.
- 1:57Trade winds are steady and classic — plenty of sun, scattered showers mainly on the windward slopes. A weak system moving through today will bring extra showers to windward areas overnight and Tuesday morning, then clear out. Wednesday through Friday stays drier. One heads-up: if you're heading to the Maui or Big Island channels by boat through Tuesday afternoon, conditions are rough — Small Craft Advisory in effect. Minor coastal flooding is also possible around high tide through at least Tuesday.
- 2:22Surf is moderate on the south shores — Waikiki at 4.1 feet, Kauaʻi's Hanalei at 4.2 feet. That means watch for shore break and rip currents if you're at a less protected beach. North shore is smaller at 3.6 feet, and Kāʻanapali is comfortable at 3 feet. Big Island's Hapuna is nearly flat. A bigger south swell arrives late Tuesday and could build to advisory levels midweek.
- 2:41Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park has several trail closures — Sulfur Banks and Kīpukapuaulu are closed due to hazardous conditions and trees. Kahuku Unit roads are also closed. Kīlauea remains at ADVISORY level. If you're heading up to the volcano, check the park website before you go.
- 2:55One thing worth watching this week: there's a disorganized area of thunderstorms about 1,100 miles east-southeast of Hawaiʻi that could develop into a tropical system by midweek. Right now the track is very uncertain, but if it moves toward the islands later this week or over the weekend, it could dramatically change the weather. Head over to hurricanes.gov to track it as it develops.
