- 0:05Speaker 1: Hey, this is Annie.
- 0:06Speaker 2: And Samantha.
- 0:07Speaker 1: And welcome to Stuff Mom Never Told You, a production
- 0:08Speaker 1: of iHeartRadio.
- 0:18Speaker 3: And welcome to, well, I'm going to say it's a
- 0:21Speaker 3: quick revisit about gaming, and we're not going to get
- 0:24Speaker 3: too deep into it. I do want to put a
- 0:27Speaker 3: timestamp because we are trying to get as many episodes
- 0:31Speaker 3: done as Before our voyage. So when you listen to this,
- 0:35Speaker 3: we'll be back. So we'll report back to you.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Annie, stop that. Not the diamond plays. We'll come in
- 0:43Speaker 2: and address that in a happy hour. Anyway, but today
- 0:47Speaker 2: is September 22nd, 2026.
- 0:49Speaker 3: The episode is obviously out much later than when we
- 0:53Speaker 3: have recorded. And because we are talking about some current
- 0:58Speaker 3: affairs stuff, This might be dated.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Who knows?
- 1:01Speaker 3: And I think one of the games we're going to
- 1:02Speaker 3: talk about should be released by the time we publish this. So,
- 1:07Speaker 3: all that to say is, now you know the time frame.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Don't yell at us when you're like, that's not even
- 1:12Speaker 3: true anymore, because I don't want to hear it. Does
- 1:16Speaker 3: that sound very mom-like?
- 1:17Speaker 2: I don't want to hear it from you.
- 1:18Speaker 1: I'll turn this podcast right around.
- 1:20Speaker 2: I will stop it right here. Okay, just kidding. All right.
- 1:24Speaker 3: So, to begin with, because, you know, we need to know,
- 1:27Speaker 3: first of all, Annie, how has gaming been for you lately?
- 1:31Speaker 1: Kind of minimal, to be honest. Yeah, that's what I thought.
- 1:34Speaker 2: I haven't heard much about it.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Yeah, it's sad. I miss it. And I know I've
- 1:41Speaker 1: spoken about I have a huge library. I have so
- 1:44Speaker 1: many games that I want to play, especially when we're
- 1:48Speaker 1: entering Halloween. There's so many things. And I do find
- 1:53Speaker 1: myself reminiscing about games I've played More than once that
- 1:58Speaker 1: I want to replay around this time. I was fondly
- 2:02Speaker 1: remembering Silent Hill F the other day. But no, I
- 2:06Speaker 1: haven't had that much time to play.
- 2:10Speaker 3: And Last of Us Day is coming up because it's
- 2:13Speaker 3: my birthday and I get reminded.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Every year that that's Last of Us Day.
- 2:17Speaker 3: And I forget every time until you remind me, which
- 2:19Speaker 3: you just reminded me from another recording.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Yes, that's true. Maybe that day I'll... Because Samantha will
- 2:29Speaker 1: be busy getting ready for our voyage. So maybe that
- 2:32Speaker 1: day I'll give it a little play.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Yeah, this is the first time. Well, no, because I've
- 2:39Speaker 3: done visits. I've gone out of town where you haven't
- 2:42Speaker 3: been a part of it. Surprisingly, I don't know how
- 2:44Speaker 3: that happened, where you weren't around for my birthday. But yes,
- 2:47Speaker 3: so maybe you'll have a small break because hopefully we've
- 2:50Speaker 3: been caught up because I'm leaving a little early and
- 2:52Speaker 3: have some extra stuff to do.
- 2:54Speaker 2: So you'll have a little bit of a break.
- 2:56Speaker 3: So maybe that can be your future game through since
- 2:59Speaker 3: it is, again, last of us day.
- 3:01Speaker 2: If you know, you know. And I know. And I know. Yeah.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Well, you know, actually, the last time, I think the
- 3:11Speaker 1: last time my dog sat peaches at your house, that's
- 3:16Speaker 1: when Silent Hill F came out and I had it
- 3:18Speaker 1: delivered to your house.
- 3:20Speaker 2: That's right.
- 3:21Speaker 1: So I could play it on your amazing TV with
- 3:25Speaker 1: your surround sound.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Which is hysterical, but also you're pretty adamant that my
- 3:31Speaker 3: house is haunted.
- 3:31Speaker 1: It is.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Which has never been a thing for me, but that's okay.
- 3:36Speaker 1: They like you.
- 3:38Speaker 2: They protect me, okay. I'm good with that. I love that.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Like someone. Just kidding. But with that. It is the
- 3:48Speaker 2: best place to do it.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Because also, like, you have random noises every now and again.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Peaches likes to stare off into space. Like, did you
- 3:55Speaker 3: see this?
- 3:56Speaker 2: It's an atmosphere. Yeah, so it definitely creates an atmosphere.
- 3:59Speaker 1: And it was storming, remember? It was really bad storms.
- 4:04Speaker 2: And neither you or Peaches can handle that.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Yeah, we were huddling together.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Y'all are the same persons.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Yes.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Written in different species. Yes.
- 4:16Speaker 3: So with that, what was your last playthrough of anything then?
- 4:19Speaker 1: It might have been.
- 4:22Speaker 2: You have a few that you have playthroughs.
- 4:24Speaker 1: It might have been when we did our last gaming
- 4:29Speaker 1: episode and we did Oxenfree and we did Unboxing and
- 4:35Speaker 1: the other game that was like a Dungeons and Dragons episode.
- 4:38Speaker 2: So it's been January?
- 4:39Speaker 3: Because I looked back to see when our last gaming
- 4:41Speaker 3: episode was, and that was in January.
- 4:43Speaker 1: I think so, because Silent Hill F came out September 25th,
- 4:46Speaker 1: I remember. So that would have been my previous one.
- 4:50Speaker 1: I think that was it. Oh, girl.
- 4:54Speaker 2: You've been busy.
- 4:55Speaker 3: It's because you're also partially doing fanfic writing.
- 4:59Speaker 2: What's the name of it again?
- 5:00Speaker 1: Nope.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Nope.
- 5:02Speaker 2: I tried that really hard that time. Oh, that's interesting.
- 5:06Speaker 3: So I feel like you've already answered this question, but
- 5:09Speaker 3: what will be your next playthrough then?
- 5:12Speaker 1: So I do have a lot of games that I really,
- 5:18Speaker 1: really want to play. I want to get into Alan Wake.
- 5:23Speaker 1: I heard really good things about that one. But we've
- 5:26Speaker 1: talked about this before. One of my issues is I
- 5:29Speaker 1: have a really hard time Stopping.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:33Speaker 1: So if Alan Wake, for example, is a long game,
- 5:37Speaker 1: that's going to my whole weekend, if not more. And
- 5:40Speaker 1: I'm not going to sleep that much. That's it. So
- 5:44Speaker 1: like shorter game wise, you and I were talking about this.
- 5:46Speaker 1: I really want to play Undertale.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Okay.
- 5:49Speaker 1: It has a very interesting like way that you play
- 5:54Speaker 1: it wherein you don't necessarily have to fight, which I
- 5:57Speaker 1: really like. It's creative and you can get a really
- 6:01Speaker 1: good ending. If you don't fight anybody.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, you did tell me that.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Yeah, so I believe that that is shorter and maybe
- 6:09Speaker 1: more manageable. I also told you the first time I
- 6:11Speaker 1: tried to play it, I got stuck, which I, to understand,
- 6:15Speaker 1: is very rare. So I don't know what I did wrong.
- 6:20Speaker 1: But I really want to play that one. I've seen
- 6:22Speaker 1: it pop up on a lot of... I watch some
- 6:25Speaker 1: YouTube videos about video games, and it always pops up as,
- 6:29Speaker 1: you know, this is one of the really creative... uh
- 6:33Speaker 1: game also soma i want to play soma but that
- 6:36Speaker 1: sounds difficult it's like an underwater very depressing.
- 6:40Speaker 3: Game but that sounds exactly like you it does right
- 6:44Speaker 3: yeah it does so then you just answered your own
- 6:47Speaker 3: question games on the horizon oh.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Yeah yeah uh i mean there's there's so many and
- 6:54Speaker 1: we've talked about So many of them on this show.
- 6:58Speaker 1: And I hate how often I'm like, yes, I want
- 7:00Speaker 1: to play that. And I do want to play it.
- 7:03Speaker 1: It just is, you know, the time of it. And
- 7:07Speaker 1: it's almost like it's the same anxiety I have about
- 7:10Speaker 1: watching TV shows is that I know I'm just going
- 7:15Speaker 1: to get hooked and I won't stop.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:18Speaker 1: But I did.
- 7:19Speaker 3: You're really good about stopping because you like the week
- 7:22Speaker 3: in week.
- 7:23Speaker 1: It depends.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Oh, that's because they make you do it.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Yeah. It depends. Like, I remember the last of us
- 7:30Speaker 1: two came out. I don't think I slept at all
- 7:31Speaker 1: that weekend. Like, not adding. But I did, like, the
- 7:37Speaker 1: episode we did with Jonathan, he gave a lot of
- 7:39Speaker 1: examples that I really wanted to play.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:42Speaker 1: And I immediately downloaded them.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:45Speaker 1: They're there.
- 7:47Speaker 2: I played a few of the games that you didn't.
- 7:48Speaker 2: I got stuck.
- 7:50Speaker 3: And they weren't hard games. They were literally just like,
- 7:53Speaker 3: do these two things.
- 7:54Speaker 2: And I'm like, nope. I'm not a quitter, though. I
- 7:59Speaker 2: can't easily do it.
- 8:00Speaker 1: I'm done. Yeah. Well, it's your free time. If you're
- 8:04Speaker 1: not enjoying it.
- 8:06Speaker 3: There are days that I'm like, I think I'm doing
- 8:08Speaker 3: it right. And maybe possibly some of my stubbornness, I'll
- 8:11Speaker 3: be like, no, you don't do it this way. This
- 8:13Speaker 3: is ridiculous. And I can't get past that part. So
- 8:15Speaker 3: I can't change my mind on how to do it.
- 8:18Speaker 2: So I just get stuck.
- 8:21Speaker 1: It's fine. Yeah. I will say, I think it was E3.
- 8:25Speaker 1: It might not have been. A big video game convention
- 8:29Speaker 1: just happened. And they announced a lot of games and
- 8:32Speaker 1: released a lot of gameplay and trailers for games I'm
- 8:35Speaker 1: excited about. The new Kingdom Hearts, the new Silent Hill.
- 8:38Speaker 1: I think there was a Resident Evil. But just like
- 8:44Speaker 1: a lot of Final Fantasy. Yeah. So that got me
- 8:49Speaker 1: pretty hyped.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:49Speaker 1: But that's like 2027. Yeah. Well, 2027 is not that far.
- 8:53Speaker 1: I know.
- 8:54Speaker 2: That's only like a few months.
- 8:57Speaker 1: It's just strange to think.
- 9:00Speaker 2: I'm just letting you know.
- 9:01Speaker 3: Yeah. It's come by quickly. It's come by quickly. Speaking
- 9:06Speaker 3: of loving Raisins and Evil, you've been talking about it.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Because I was like, you know what? You need to
- 9:11Speaker 3: come back and talk about it because you had one
- 9:13Speaker 3: of the best times over the weekend. One of the
- 9:16Speaker 3: few breaks that you've had since I was like, we
- 9:18Speaker 3: got to get this. all these things done we're just
- 9:21Speaker 3: seeing the new resident evil right so i was like
- 9:24Speaker 3: you know what we need a review you don't have
- 9:26Speaker 3: to do a full review but at least give us
- 9:28Speaker 3: the down low about what is happening and what you
- 9:31Speaker 3: really enjoy because you came back with like texting me
- 9:34Speaker 3: about how much fun you.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Had it was so fun it was so fun so
- 9:38Speaker 1: i'm not uh i'm gonna try my best not to
- 9:42Speaker 1: spoil it But if you absolutely don't want any spoilers,
- 9:47Speaker 1: then just like skip ahead a couple minutes. Skip ahead. So, yes.
- 10:00Speaker 1: this was a Zack Kreger movie who also did Barbarians
- 10:04Speaker 1: and Weapons. And it came out September 18th. I went
- 10:08Speaker 1: to see it that day. Samantha knows I was so excited.
- 10:11Speaker 2: So excited.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Even before I was like going, I was like, oh
- 10:13Speaker 1: my gosh, I'm so excited. And it's been a while
- 10:16Speaker 1: since I've been that excited. But there was just so
- 10:18Speaker 1: much buildup about it. There was a lot of hype
- 10:20Speaker 1: about it. It had gotten all these great reviews. I've
- 10:23Speaker 1: spoken before about Resident Evil. The movies are not good.
- 10:29Speaker 1: um they are fun in some cases in some cases
- 10:34Speaker 1: very much not fun uh but they're not good movies
- 10:39Speaker 1: no one would say they're good movies so it was
- 10:42Speaker 1: exciting to hear like this is the like highest rated
- 10:45Speaker 1: video game movie of all time stuff like that what
- 10:48Speaker 1: could this be um and there was also a lot
- 10:53Speaker 1: of kind of fan backlash before it even came out
- 10:57Speaker 1: because there weren't any characters from the game there wasn't
- 11:02Speaker 1: any plot line from the game in it which they
- 11:05Speaker 1: kind of similarly did in the other movies and the
- 11:08Speaker 1: director of those said it was because there would be
- 11:10Speaker 1: no scare like you would already know what happens which
- 11:14Speaker 1: I think is there's some truth to but I also
- 11:16Speaker 1: think if you did it well even if you know
- 11:19Speaker 1: what's coming you could scare people right like I don't
- 11:21Speaker 1: think that's necessarily an ironclad excuse But me and my
- 11:27Speaker 1: friend Katie, who have grown up playing these games way
- 11:31Speaker 1: too young, playing Resident Evil 1 and 2, and then
- 11:35Speaker 1: 3 and 4. And then 3 and 4, yeah, we did.
- 11:42Speaker 1: We went to go see this movie at a local
- 11:46Speaker 1: beloved theater, the Plaza.
- 11:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:48Speaker 1: And they had a costume contest before. And let me
- 11:51Speaker 1: tell you, we were there 30 minutes ahead of time
- 11:53Speaker 1: and we were in the back row. It was packed out.
- 11:58Speaker 1: The costume contest had, I would say, at least 30
- 12:01Speaker 1: people participating. And they said it was the biggest costume
- 12:05Speaker 1: contest they'd ever hosted. And they had to do it
- 12:09Speaker 1: in three chunks because there were so many people.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Wow.
- 12:15Speaker 1: And they would pick... the winner from each chunk and
- 12:20Speaker 1: uh the guy who won there's a lot of leons
- 12:23Speaker 1: and a lot of ada's so if you know we
- 12:25Speaker 1: have done an episode on ada actually for fictional women
- 12:27Speaker 1: around the world um but if you know they're kind
- 12:31Speaker 1: of a couple kind of a love hate uh she's
- 12:34Speaker 1: the spy and he's the agent kind of situation going
- 12:38Speaker 1: on there were a lot of them but the person
- 12:40Speaker 1: who won was a leon and And I think he
- 12:43Speaker 1: deserved to win, but I would be mad if I
- 12:45Speaker 1: was another competitor because he did tricks. None of them
- 12:49Speaker 1: else did tricks, but he did, like, backflips and, like.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Oh, so he.
- 12:53Speaker 3: Was doing a fan-like service.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I was like, if I could do a trick,
- 12:57Speaker 1: maybe I would have done something differently. But, yeah, no,
- 13:01Speaker 1: he won, and I do think he deserved it. I'm
- 13:04Speaker 1: just saying I would have had a little moment of, like.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Yeah, but what?
- 13:09Speaker 1: Yes, yes. So... The movie is really interesting. And that
- 13:16Speaker 1: is one much funnier than I thought it was going
- 13:19Speaker 1: to be. It was very funny. And it does not...
- 13:28Speaker 1: You could easily see that movie and not know what's
- 13:30Speaker 1: related to Resident Evil at all. Oh, really? Yes. Like,
- 13:34Speaker 1: if you know what Resident Evil is, you would. But
- 13:37Speaker 1: it never... It mentions Raccoon City once, which is where
- 13:41Speaker 1: it happens. And it has the similar zombies throughout, but
- 13:51Speaker 1: it really doesn't lean into that at all. And I
- 13:55Speaker 1: think that's kind of interesting. It's really visually cool. There's
- 14:00Speaker 1: a lot of visuals that they did. It's very snowy.
- 14:04Speaker 1: And very early on, a cop car gets overturned, but
- 14:09Speaker 1: you see the blue and red light. Like, in the dark,
- 14:12Speaker 1: in the snow, throughout, like, all the scenes. And that's
- 14:14Speaker 1: really cool. It has a lot of Easter eggs, like
- 14:17Speaker 1: the typewriter, where you save in the games. You save
- 14:22Speaker 1: your game. It has, like, the revenant zombie, which is
- 14:26Speaker 1: the zombies that come together and make a bigger creature.
- 14:32Speaker 1: And then the T-virus, obviously. which is what causes the
- 14:36Speaker 1: whole thing. But they only mentioned the Umbrella Corporation once too,
- 14:39Speaker 1: and that's the corporation behind all of this. But they
- 14:44Speaker 1: have a lot of video game.
- 14:49Speaker 1: The way video games progress, the way Resident Evil progresses,
- 14:52Speaker 1: they have a lot of nods to that. And I
- 14:54Speaker 1: find this interesting, because this has actually been a critique
- 14:58Speaker 1: I have of a lot of movies lately, is that
- 15:01Speaker 1: it feels like I'm playing a video game, but it
- 15:04Speaker 1: side quest and it's kind of boring and you're like
- 15:06Speaker 1: but what about this main thing though? Like why are
- 15:09Speaker 1: we doing this side thing? I don't understand. That's a
- 15:11Speaker 1: very video game type thing that I think works more
- 15:15Speaker 1: in that format than it does in movies. But in
- 15:17Speaker 1: this it was really cool because it was like the
- 15:20Speaker 1: main character Brian he upgrades his weapons. That's a very
- 15:25Speaker 1: common video game thing. He has like the one big
- 15:32Speaker 1: stalker and in Resident Evil that's a huge thing whether
- 15:35Speaker 1: it's Tyrant or Nemesis like they're the scary ones that
- 15:40Speaker 1: are following you everywhere and like lurking everywhere uh so
- 15:46Speaker 1: it was cool that it had all of these nods
- 15:49Speaker 1: that were subtle enough that I think if you never
- 15:53Speaker 1: interacted with Resident Evil you'd just be like this is
- 15:55Speaker 1: a good funny zombie movie and it is scary it
- 15:58Speaker 1: has like really great jump scares um some of them
- 16:04Speaker 1: I really like people were screaming in the audience because
- 16:07Speaker 1: it was just there's one in particular that got me
- 16:11Speaker 1: good but yeah I mean I think that it was
- 16:17Speaker 1: just a really interesting creative take on a franchise that's
- 16:19Speaker 1: been around for a long time while still sticking to
- 16:25Speaker 1: because Resident Evil is weird and funny oh another thing
- 16:28Speaker 1: they did is and I've talked about this before A
- 16:31Speaker 1: lot of the, in Resident Evil, there's like puzzles that
- 16:36Speaker 1: are so strange. You're like, who would ever design this puzzle?
- 16:39Speaker 1: This makes absolutely no sense. And a lot of locked doors.
- 16:44Speaker 1: So they had that running gag throughout that he could
- 16:47Speaker 1: never get in a door. And that's just a nice little,
- 16:52Speaker 1: I remember playing this. You couldn't get anywhere.
- 16:54Speaker 2: So it felt real.
- 16:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:56Speaker 1: It felt real.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Like, yep, I've experienced this.
- 16:59Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 17:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:03Speaker 1: So that's, I mean, I could go on and on,
- 17:05Speaker 1: but I feel like that's my take is that it
- 17:07Speaker 1: was a really fun, surprisingly funny, in my opinion, nice, atmospheric,
- 17:14Speaker 1: scary homage to Rest in Evil. Okay.
- 17:19Speaker 2: So 1010 would recommend?
- 17:20Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Absolutely would recommend. Okay.
- 17:24Speaker 2: But it needs to be seen in movies, theaters, you think?
- 17:28Speaker 1: I mean, I guess that's a personal preference. If you're
- 17:31Speaker 1: really like me, love horror and or Resident Evil, I
- 17:36Speaker 1: would say see it in theaters because it is very atmospheric.
- 17:39Speaker 1: And the audience reaction built on it. It was fun. Okay.
- 17:46Speaker 2: That's a recommendation you need to know. Yeah.
- 17:48Speaker 1: I mean, I will say that obviously everybody at that
- 17:51Speaker 1: showing was probably really into Resident Evil. Well, yeah. Yeah.
- 17:57Speaker 1: I don't know if that audience reaction will be the
- 17:59Speaker 1: same outside of that. But it was great watching it
- 18:03Speaker 1: with that crowd. It was really fun.
- 18:05Speaker 2: And for the show, Katie, she dressed up, right?
- 18:09Speaker 1: She was going to and then did not.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Okay.
- 18:14Speaker 3: Yes.
- 18:15Speaker 2: She's so good with costumes, so I just assumed she did.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Yeah. I think because we were just off of Dragon
- 18:21Speaker 1: Con and all this stuff, she didn't have time. But
- 18:23Speaker 1: she wanted to. And we had like a throwback. the
- 18:26Speaker 1: first time we ran a race together, we went as, uh,
- 18:30Speaker 1: escapees from the Raccoon City jail. Uh, and so we
- 18:34Speaker 1: were going to bring that one back, but we didn't.
- 18:37Speaker 1: We didn't have time.
- 18:39Speaker 3: I have a feeling this is going to be huge
- 18:40Speaker 3: for next year's Dragon Con then, right?
- 18:44Speaker 1: I think so. I'm always hesitant about things that come
- 18:47Speaker 1: out right after Dragon Con.
- 18:48Speaker 3: That's true.
- 18:49Speaker 2: That's true.
- 18:49Speaker 1: That they might like kind of fade from the zeitgeist, but, uh,
- 18:54Speaker 1: There's definitely, I think it would be really funny to
- 18:56Speaker 1: do the main character plus his, he's a medical courier.
- 19:01Speaker 1: So he transports organs to other hospitals and he's just
- 19:07Speaker 1: extremely careful with the organs, which I think is great.
- 19:12Speaker 1: but he's like like talking like buckling it in and
- 19:15Speaker 1: like okay it's gonna be okay so i think if
- 19:19Speaker 1: somebody was him with the like bag like yeah that'd be.
- 19:26Speaker 3: Funny people get on it next year you know it's
- 19:29Speaker 3: a full year right but still.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Next year halloween's coming right up so oh yeah i
- 19:33Speaker 1: bet that'll be big in halloween too it could be
- 19:36Speaker 1: it could be i'm curious i like how Outside of
- 19:39Speaker 1: Resident Evil fans have listed because I mean, it did
- 19:42Speaker 1: do really well. It made like the most money. I
- 19:44Speaker 1: think the fourth most money of any video game movie
- 19:47Speaker 1: ever made. It made more than any representation. Evil movie
- 19:50Speaker 1: has ever made in its first weekend right um but
- 19:54Speaker 1: I don't know like how much of that was the
- 19:58Speaker 1: fans or if it was people outside of it I
- 20:00Speaker 1: don't know.
- 20:01Speaker 3: I've been being fed a little bit in our in
- 20:04Speaker 3: my for you page and one of the things I
- 20:06Speaker 3: saw was like the director talking about how He almost
- 20:10Speaker 3: killed the main actor with a blood bag. And the
- 20:15Speaker 3: actor was sitting next to him like, you know, I
- 20:17Speaker 3: almost died. And the director's laughing.
- 20:20Speaker 2: He's like, sorry about that.
- 20:22Speaker 1: All good. You know, all's well that ends well.
- 20:27Speaker 2: I just love the reference of blood bag as well.
- 20:30Speaker 2: I'm like, what? What? Okay. Leaving that be. Leaving that be. Anyway, well,
- 20:36Speaker 2: thank you for that review. Good to note.
- 20:38Speaker 3: Because I love good, like, scary movies. So that sounds
- 20:41Speaker 3: like something I could enjoy without understanding what's happening.
- 20:45Speaker 1: I think you get it. It's actually pretty straightforward. Okay. Yeah.
- 20:50Speaker 1: I think the references are just for, like, a wink, wink, nod, nod. Like,
- 20:54Speaker 1: but you don't need those.
- 20:56Speaker 2: Who was the actress? Was that Mila Yovanovitch?
- 20:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:00Speaker 2: Okay. I just lost that altogether. Mila Yovanovitch?
- 21:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:04Speaker 3: She said this is the best, like, she said... I'm
- 21:07Speaker 3: glad someone actually made a really good version of this
- 21:10Speaker 3: in reference to that movie. And then I think her
- 21:12Speaker 3: husband was the one that directed the old ones with her.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Yes.
- 21:19Speaker 2: Which you're like, what?
- 21:22Speaker 1: They have their place, but they are not good movies.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Look, it is like cult classics, though. I do know that.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Which is why they kept making more and more and more.
- 21:32Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Well, and a lot of Resident Evil is
- 21:35Speaker 1: really goofy. The thing's about, like, every game feels so different.
- 21:43Speaker 1: So it's hard to, like, put a blanket statement over it.
- 21:47Speaker 1: But some of them are so goofy. And, like, the
- 21:49Speaker 1: villain Wesker, when they introduced him in the movies, I
- 21:53Speaker 1: laughed aloud. He's such a ridiculous character, and I love
- 22:00Speaker 1: him dearly. But he's not someone that I would fear.
- 22:08Speaker 1: in a movie situation I'm sure like because he controls
- 22:11Speaker 1: a lot of the government so I'm sure that's very
- 22:13Speaker 1: scary but I just laughed out loud it didn't help
- 22:17Speaker 1: that that movie was in 3D oh oh no yeah
- 22:21Speaker 1: and he like threw he has these sunglasses he wears
- 22:23Speaker 1: all the time and he like threw them at the
- 22:25Speaker 1: screen and so they're coming at you I was laughing
- 22:29Speaker 1: I was laughing so hard.
- 22:30Speaker 3: That's an interesting like scare tactic yeah hilarious well thank
- 22:36Speaker 3: you for that I'll put that on a movie. I'm
- 22:39Speaker 3: going to look that up later. With all of that,
- 22:50Speaker 3: we're still talking about video games.
- 22:53Speaker 2: How is your Animal Crossing Island? How's it going? Have
- 22:57Speaker 2: you checked it?
- 22:58Speaker 1: I haven't checked it in a long time, but I
- 23:02Speaker 1: will tell you, I think I have given this update before,
- 23:05Speaker 1: but in case I haven't, Or just as a reminder,
- 23:08Speaker 1: I did complete everything. Oh, you did, yeah. I got
- 23:12Speaker 1: everything in the museum. I got every creature. I did
- 23:19Speaker 1: the whole thing. I completed it. I even became one
- 23:23Speaker 1: of those, you could design people's houses, and I got
- 23:26Speaker 1: something for that. Oh, wow. Oh, yeah. And I got
- 23:31Speaker 1: some of my preferred villagers in there.
- 23:33Speaker 3: Dang.
- 23:34Speaker 2: Yeah, that's pretty good.
- 23:36Speaker 3: You need to go check on it because it's probably
- 23:37Speaker 3: overgrown now.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Oh, gosh. I'm sure it is.
- 23:40Speaker 3: I need you to know that it's going to be
- 23:41Speaker 3: really overgrown and some of your villagers may have left.
- 23:44Speaker 2: And so there may be empty houses.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Not the star guy.
- 23:48Speaker 2: You might want to go check on that because some
- 23:50Speaker 2: of them, after a while, may leave.
- 23:53Speaker 3: Oh, no.
- 23:54Speaker 1: I worked so hard to get star guy. I know
- 23:56Speaker 1: you did.
- 23:57Speaker 3: I'm going to need you to go back and check.
- 24:00Speaker 3: And I say this as a person who has abandoned
- 24:02Speaker 3: my island a few times.
- 24:04Speaker 2: And, y'all, it's not looking great. And people have left.
- 24:07Speaker 2: I'm like, what happened to this creature? They abruptly left.
- 24:12Speaker 3: I want it to be noted. I still haven't gotten
- 24:15Speaker 3: my museum together. I got all the paintings. I'm having
- 24:20Speaker 3: a hard time with the creatures. I think I got
- 24:22Speaker 3: all the fruits.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. I got that, too.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Don't have the fish. I got to go back.
- 24:28Speaker 3: I keep going to the wrong season, even with me cheating.
- 24:33Speaker 3: So the wrong season.
- 24:37Speaker 1: I love it when you cheat and still lose. You
- 24:40Speaker 1: know what?
- 24:40Speaker 3: I don't need this attitude from you, Annie, about my
- 24:45Speaker 3: type B island, okay?
- 24:48Speaker 1: Okay.
- 24:49Speaker 3: I don't do well when it comes to design. Don't
- 24:52Speaker 3: get me to design anything. I can't do it. And
- 24:54Speaker 3: I get really anxious about it, and then I just
- 24:56Speaker 3: give up. That's my theme in life.
- 24:59Speaker 2: I give up.
- 24:59Speaker 3: Anyway, so speaking of games, speaking of games, I want
- 25:03Speaker 3: to talk about what is happening in gaming and women
- 25:05Speaker 3: a little more. And also want to talk about some
- 25:08Speaker 3: of the new women-led games that might be out there
- 25:11Speaker 3: that we could take part in, like could be interesting
- 25:14Speaker 3: for us. Some of these things have not completely been released.
- 25:17Speaker 3: Some of these, actually, none of these have been released
- 25:20Speaker 3: as of our recording time.
- 25:22Speaker 2: I'll say that. And some of them have not had
- 25:25Speaker 2: dates yet. So we don't know.
- 25:27Speaker 3: And I know a lot of times they kind of
- 25:29Speaker 3: fall through. So cross your fingers and probably should check
- 25:32Speaker 3: up on all the other games that we recommended. A
- 25:34Speaker 3: few of them have like the Tavern Talk. We talked
- 25:36Speaker 3: about that and that came out. Thought we would talk
- 25:38Speaker 3: about a few that I was thinking would be interesting
- 25:41Speaker 3: for either you, me or both of us. And this
- 25:43Speaker 3: is just a small amount of games. A shout out
- 25:46Speaker 3: to digitallydownloaded.net who listed off these new games. And I
- 25:51Speaker 3: think they had like a shout out for it in general.
- 25:55Speaker 2: And the list was published.
- 25:56Speaker 3: On June 4th, 2026. So if you want to go
- 25:59Speaker 3: look it up. So let's talk about a game they
- 26:02Speaker 3: highlighted that I think, again, maybe something of interest to you, Annie.
- 26:06Speaker 3: And it's called Kashmar, The Last Reverie. So this is
- 26:11Speaker 3: from the digitally downloaded.
- 26:13Speaker 2: NET article.
- 26:15Speaker 3: Kashmar, The Last Reverie, is set in a retro-futuristic world
- 26:18Speaker 3: inspired by 19th century Central Europe. It combines gothic and
- 26:23Speaker 3: steampunk aesthetics. The game features world building, novel mechanics, which
- 26:28Speaker 3: fall somewhere in the spectrum between dreams and nightmares, and
- 26:32Speaker 3: agency when navigating the waking world or the dream world.
- 26:35Speaker 3: The type of action depends on Violet's abilities, upgrades, and skills.
- 26:39Speaker 3: There are multiple endings with variable factors, and player choices
- 26:43Speaker 3: shape the world. And I feel like that's right up
- 26:46Speaker 3: your alley. This level of changing things, doing things differently,
- 26:50Speaker 3: and how that changes things, and then how it kind
- 26:53Speaker 3: of builds on itself.
- 26:55Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. No, I love a good atmospheric. What's going
- 27:00Speaker 1: on here? I'm not sure. And then your decisions can change,
- 27:07Speaker 1: like how the world is or what happens with it. Yeah. Yeah.
- 27:13Speaker 3: So this is from the description from Steam site, the
- 27:17Speaker 3: Steam site, about raised among cadavers, feared by the living
- 27:22Speaker 3: and ignored by her father. Violet has only one place
- 27:25Speaker 3: of warmth. the dream world she shares with her best friend.
- 27:28Speaker 3: A mysterious sleeping plague takes everything away, forcing Violet to
- 27:32Speaker 3: venture where no one dares. So the description is super interesting,
- 27:36Speaker 3: I think. And the actual game comes from Purple Ray Studios,
- 27:41Speaker 3: and it should be released sometime in 2027. And part
- 27:44Speaker 3: of the description is, it kind of hints at not only.
- 27:47Speaker 2: Who is Violet, but what is Violet.
- 27:52Speaker 3: So, you know, lots of things. So I think it's
- 27:53Speaker 3: the one to look out for. I think it'll be
- 27:55Speaker 3: really fun and interesting for you. For me, I don't
- 27:58Speaker 3: think I would survive very long.
- 28:01Speaker 2: In this game.
- 28:03Speaker 3: But it might be one of those things that I
- 28:05Speaker 3: want you to play to tell me how fun it is.
- 28:08Speaker 3: We'll put that in that list. So next one we
- 28:12Speaker 3: have that seems to be up my alley a bit
- 28:14Speaker 3: more so called Taste of Heaven. And again, to that digitaldownload.net.
- 28:20Speaker 3: Taste of Heaven, set in the birthplace of the universe,
- 28:23Speaker 3: blends cooking gameplay with RPG progression and roguelite replayability. Take
- 28:28Speaker 3: on the role of a chef serving waves of hungry gods, godlings,
- 28:31Speaker 3: and wandering souls. Each customer is unique with their own
- 28:35Speaker 3: personality and fun dialogue. The recipe system encourages creativity and experimentation.
- 28:41Speaker 3: Spirit Away inspires the beautiful world. So as I was
- 28:45Speaker 3: watching the video about it, the creator does talk about
- 28:47Speaker 3: how she loves Spirit And many other characters are inspired
- 28:50Speaker 3: by that. The animation is also inspired by that. So
- 28:54Speaker 3: it sounds very.
- 28:54Speaker 2: Beautiful in itself.
- 28:55Speaker 3: So this is from Chromatic Dreams Studio, and they write this.
- 29:00Speaker 3: Embark on an epic journey, trade with merchants, gather ingredients,
- 29:04Speaker 3: and encounter rare.
- 29:05Speaker 2: Events along the way. So you're going on a whole.
- 29:08Speaker 3: Journey to get all the stuff. So it's set to
- 29:10Speaker 3: release in early 2027. It's beautifully illustrated and seems to
- 29:15Speaker 3: have a bit of romance. So I'm excited to see
- 29:19Speaker 3: what that means and what happens when it's released. But, like,
- 29:23Speaker 3: I love a good cooking game that's not intended for
- 29:29Speaker 3: you to argue with your partner.
- 29:32Speaker 1: What game could you be referring to?
- 29:34Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 29:35Speaker 3: Which, by the way, there is a VR gaming spot
- 29:39Speaker 3: where you can... play that in vr with people that
- 29:45Speaker 3: sounds either really fun or really chaotic.
- 29:50Speaker 1: Or really traumatic Depending on who you end up with.
- 29:56Speaker 2: But yeah, so I was like, oh, that's cool.
- 29:58Speaker 3: And the way they showed the animations of them cooking
- 30:01Speaker 3: was super cool. It kind of has that setup of,
- 30:04Speaker 3: you know, you coming from the point of view of
- 30:07Speaker 3: the chef.
- 30:07Speaker 2: So you're talking to customers and then getting their order.
- 30:10Speaker 3: So it seemed really cool. So something that I think
- 30:12Speaker 3: I might be interested in and we might have to
- 30:13Speaker 3: look into next year. Then we have one that's for
- 30:17Speaker 3: both you and I, Annie. Not that the other ones
- 30:20Speaker 3: you can't play, but some of them I can't play,
- 30:23Speaker 3: you know. And it's a game by Catalyst Games, Dungeons
- 30:28Speaker 3: and Dining Tables.
- 30:30Speaker 2: That's what it's called.
- 30:31Speaker 3: So from steampower.com, Dungeons and Dining Tables is a cozy
- 30:35Speaker 3: adventure RPG where you play as an axolotl on a
- 30:39Speaker 3: quest to decorate their house and defeat the termites out
- 30:42Speaker 3: to eat their furniture. So it says in the game,
- 30:46Speaker 3: you explore dungeons where you solve puzzles defeat enemies, and
- 30:50Speaker 3: to try to find furniture to loot. So the more
- 30:53Speaker 3: unique the furniture, the better you get points on. But yes,
- 30:57Speaker 3: you have puzzles and you have things that, like, I
- 30:59Speaker 3: think that's the, there's dungeons involved, but I think it
- 31:01Speaker 3: has a play on Dungeons and Dragons type of feel,
- 31:04Speaker 3: the quests. And then you go back to your home
- 31:07Speaker 3: and you decorate it. Super cute animation. First of all, axolotls.
- 31:11Speaker 3: They're really cute. I can never say the names right,
- 31:13Speaker 3: but they're really cute. And for the longest time, I
- 31:16Speaker 3: didn't know they were real. I thought they were mythical creatures,
- 31:20Speaker 3: to be honest.
- 31:21Speaker 1: They sound like mythical creatures.
- 31:22Speaker 3: Right? And you look at them, they still look like
- 31:24Speaker 3: mythical creatures to me. They're like tiny dragons or animations.
- 31:28Speaker 3: I don't know how to explain them. So from their Prescott,
- 31:34Speaker 3: the Catalyst Games, it says, delve into procedurally generated dungeons
- 31:39Speaker 3: to loot rare furniture and decorate your home because the
- 31:42Speaker 3: cozier your house is, the stronger you become. Increase your
- 31:46Speaker 3: comfy points to level up your abode. Boost your stats
- 31:49Speaker 3: and unlock new perks. Help the quirky residents of Kindle rest.
- 31:54Speaker 3: Conquer puzzles and defeat bosses by helping them overcome their
- 31:57Speaker 3: own insecurities.
- 31:58Speaker 2: Or just give them a good whack.
- 32:00Speaker 3: Uncovering a heartwarming tale of kindness, community, and one prickly villain.
- 32:04Speaker 2: Who just needs a hug.
- 32:08Speaker 3: Right?
- 32:09Speaker 2: Mm-hmm. Everybody needs a hug.
- 32:10Speaker 3: There is no current release date on this one. So
- 32:14Speaker 3: this one and those, like, oh, I hope it happens.
- 32:16Speaker 3: But they do have a Kickstarter. Kickstarter. So if you're
- 32:18Speaker 3: interested in it, but I really did think the animation
- 32:20Speaker 3: was really cute. So cross your fingers. I hope this
- 32:23Speaker 3: one happens because this.
- 32:23Speaker 2: Would be fun.
- 32:24Speaker 3: I think. Yeah. Yeah.
- 32:28Speaker 1: I think so too. Come on.
- 32:32Speaker 2: Anybody?
- 32:32Speaker 1: No.
- 32:32Speaker 3: Okay. And then the last one for today, and of
- 32:35Speaker 3: course there's many more, is a.
- 32:37Speaker 2: Nice and spooky one.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Okay.
- 32:39Speaker 3: This is probably more for you than me. Called Blue
- 32:43Speaker 3: Ridge Hunting. And yes, this is set in the Appalachian Mountains.
- 32:47Speaker 3: specifically West Virginia, but from steampower.com, they write, in Blue
- 32:52Speaker 3: Ridge Hunting, team up with friends to investigate, document, and
- 32:54Speaker 3: take down these terrifying creatures lurking in the shadows. Explore
- 32:58Speaker 3: expansive open-world maps inspired by real locations across the Appalachian
- 33:03Speaker 3: region and come face-to-face with some of its most feared
- 33:06Speaker 3: and mysterious beasts. I will say, I know the open-world
- 33:09Speaker 3: part is not your favorite part, but it's spooky ghost stories, Annie.
- 33:14Speaker 1: This is true.
- 33:15Speaker 2: It's like I'm talking you into it.
- 33:17Speaker 3: From their site, BlueRidgeHunting.com, Blue Ridge Hunting is an online
- 33:21Speaker 3: co-op horror game. You and up to four friends will investigate, document,
- 33:25Speaker 3: and hunt cryptids in the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern America
- 33:29Speaker 3: based on real sightings, phenomena, and legends from the region.
- 33:33Speaker 3: Join the Appalachian investigation team and utilize various tools and
- 33:37Speaker 3: items to collect evidence and track down creatures. Get paid
- 33:40Speaker 3: for successful hunts and use your money to invest in
- 33:42Speaker 3: new equipment. Creatures are always listening and looking. Utilize proximity
- 33:46Speaker 3: with voice chat and your radio for communications, but be
- 33:49Speaker 3: careful not to attract too much attention.
- 33:52Speaker 2: Again, right up your alley. The fact that they can
- 33:54Speaker 2: actually hear you.
- 33:56Speaker 1: Oh. I've talked about alien isolation. I've never beat that game.
- 34:00Speaker 1: It scares me so badly. And the alien is like,
- 34:05Speaker 1: you're like, oh, I'll just hide here. Won't hear me.
- 34:08Speaker 1: But you're breathing. And so it's like, nope. Yeah.
- 34:13Speaker 3: So I thought that was like interesting. I know some
- 34:16Speaker 3: of the things are not necessarily typical for your gaming preferences,
- 34:20Speaker 3: but I'm like, maybe this will be interesting in this level,
- 34:23Speaker 3: especially like I know some of your friends are also
- 34:25Speaker 3: cool into RPG type of play.
- 34:28Speaker 2: So this could be an interesting thing.
- 34:30Speaker 3: Some features they list are retro art style. So they
- 34:33Speaker 3: have like 3D art style that was like, okay, inspired
- 34:36Speaker 3: by real places and legends. And has an original soundtrack
- 34:40Speaker 3: that is, quote, inspired by the dark bluegrass and ambient
- 34:43Speaker 3: guitar genres.
- 34:45Speaker 2: I know. I feel like that's a plus for you.
- 34:48Speaker 3: So this is created by independent game studio Jade & Company.
- 34:52Speaker 3: And this is from jadecompany.games, their site. Jade & Company
- 34:56Speaker 3: is an independent game studio created by Jade Meadows to
- 34:59Speaker 3: provide a home for friends and colleagues that contribute to
- 35:02Speaker 3: the development of our projects. We are a collective of artists, composers,
- 35:05Speaker 3: and designers based all around the world. And yeah, this
- 35:09Speaker 3: game is set to be released October of 2026. That
- 35:13Speaker 3: means next month slash this month. And I think it's
- 35:16Speaker 3: really cool. Again, each one of these are women-led games.
- 35:20Speaker 2: We love that.
- 35:21Speaker 3: We hope for their success. We want to see it grow.
- 35:24Speaker 3: We want to see more of them because we think
- 35:27Speaker 3: it's important to have more women voices come out, especially
- 35:30Speaker 3: in an industry that is predominantly men-led. but played by women.
- 35:35Speaker 3: And like we talked about the stats before, but women
- 35:38Speaker 3: do outnumber, not necessarily like PC or gaming consoles, but
- 35:44Speaker 3: like mobile gaming and such. And they do come on
- 35:46Speaker 3: top in that level. So I think it's still important
- 35:50Speaker 3: because we know mobile gaming is still gaming.
- 35:53Speaker 1: Yes, it is.
- 35:55Speaker 2: To be reiterated.
- 35:57Speaker 3: With that, let's talk about what's happening in gaming world.
- 35:59Speaker 3: And basically, One big one specifically. So we're going to
- 36:02Speaker 3: concentrate specifically on AI because I think we've talked a
- 36:05Speaker 3: lot pretty expansively about world of gaming, women in gaming,
- 36:10Speaker 3: women who play the games, all those things. So I
- 36:13Speaker 3: thought we would take a small look. And this is
- 36:15Speaker 3: a very small look, y'all, because I just barely tapped
- 36:17Speaker 3: into it, mainly because there's not a lot of research
- 36:20Speaker 3: right now about women who are in the gaming industry
- 36:24Speaker 3: and how AI is affecting them.
- 36:26Speaker 2: So this is just a broader scope of what.
- 36:29Speaker 3: Is happening because It's so new in the conversation, even
- 36:33Speaker 3: though it's kind of been around for a minute, technically,
- 36:37Speaker 3: but it's so new in the conversation and the destruction
- 36:40Speaker 3: and or the betterment of the industry that there's not
- 36:43Speaker 3: a lot to be given in stats when it comes
- 36:45Speaker 3: to women, because obviously it always takes a lot longer
- 36:49Speaker 3: when it comes to about getting information about women in
- 36:51Speaker 3: these fields, in any field, in any subject period. So
- 36:55Speaker 3: we're going to look at the broader scopes a bit.
- 36:59Speaker 3: So how is AI working? affecting the industry in general.
- 37:03Speaker 3: We've talked about the damage of AI in general when
- 37:06Speaker 3: it comes to jobs, specifically when it comes to women.
- 37:09Speaker 3: And this is from the International Labor Organization. They wrote
- 37:11Speaker 3: this in March of 2026. They say, across countries with
- 37:15Speaker 3: available data, occupations dominated by women are almost twice as
- 37:19Speaker 3: likely to be exposed to a generative AI as male-dominated ones,
- 37:23Speaker 3: the study finds. around 29% of female-dominated occupations are exposed
- 37:28Speaker 3: to generative AI compared to just 16% of male-dominated occupations.
- 37:33Speaker 3: The difference is even starker when looking at high automation risk. 16%
- 37:37Speaker 3: of female-dominated occupations fall into the highest exposure categories compared
- 37:42Speaker 3: to only 3% of the male-dominated ones. So these are
- 37:47Speaker 3: pretty big numbers. These are pretty big differences. And again,
- 37:50Speaker 3: we're talking about all jobs in general. And in that
- 37:53Speaker 3: same article, they write this, the brief generative AI occupational
- 37:57Speaker 3: segregation and gender equality in the world of work shows
- 38:00Speaker 3: that women are disproportionately exposed to generative AI for three
- 38:04Speaker 3: main reasons. They are overrepresented in jobs most susceptible to automation.
- 38:09Speaker 3: They remain underrepresented in AI related in science, technology, engineering,
- 38:15Speaker 3: and mathematics, STEM occupations, and AI systems themselves often reflect
- 38:19Speaker 3: and reproduce the gender biases embedded in societies.
- 38:23Speaker 2: We've talked about this repeatedly.
- 38:24Speaker 3: We've talked about this in so many of the AI-related episodes.
- 38:27Speaker 3: We've talked about this with Bridget in so many of
- 38:29Speaker 3: our AI-related episodes. So with that, what about the world
- 38:34Speaker 3: of gaming? Well, again, this is something that is currently
- 38:37Speaker 3: being looked into, but of course, we have to talk
- 38:41Speaker 3: about the broader level because they're not looking at specifically
- 38:43Speaker 3: women because they never.
- 38:44Speaker 2: Do until after the fact.
- 38:46Speaker 3: According to reports made by Game Developers Conference or gdconf.com,
- 38:52Speaker 3: The people who they surveyed showed that one out of
- 38:54Speaker 3: four gaming industry people were laid off in the last
- 38:57Speaker 3: two years. So that's just in general, not necessarily because
- 38:59Speaker 3: of AI, but just in general. And a manager stated
- 39:03Speaker 3: it was because of restructuring, while employees stated it was mismanagement.
- 39:09Speaker 3: So the Game Developers Conference specifically did surveys with people
- 39:13Speaker 3: who showed up to their conference and or were a
- 39:15Speaker 3: part of it and so was able to get their take.
- 39:20Speaker 3: It says within the company, there was a reported of
- 39:22Speaker 3: like 52% usage of AI in any of the companies.
- 39:26Speaker 2: From their report, they say this. Overall, about half, 52%.
- 39:30Speaker 3: Said generative AI tools are being used at their companies,
- 39:33Speaker 3: including one third, 35% of those who don't use AI themselves.
- 39:37Speaker 3: So it's no surprise that they're seeing more companies adopt
- 39:40Speaker 3: the policies on generative AI. According to the survey, over three-fourths, 78%
- 39:45Speaker 3: of respondents work at companies with some form of internal
- 39:48Speaker 3: policy on AI use. while 15% said there's no policy,
- 39:52Speaker 3: and 7% said that we're unsure. So AI is having
- 39:56Speaker 3: a conversation in these companies. Whether it's being used, whether
- 40:00Speaker 3: it's being told not to use it or regulating it,
- 40:04Speaker 3: it's being talked about, and the policies are trying to
- 40:07Speaker 3: reflect that. 52% of the companies are using it.
- 40:12Speaker 2: So that's quite a bit. That's a big turn.
- 40:17Speaker 3: So with all these numbers online, We do want to
- 40:20Speaker 3: note that the number of people who attended as well
- 40:22Speaker 3: as who took these surveys were a majority of white men. Because, again,
- 40:29Speaker 3: the percentage is something that we have to talk about.
- 40:32Speaker 3: But it was interesting to see who was being represented
- 40:36Speaker 3: at the conference in itself. And I don't know if
- 40:38Speaker 3: that has anything to do with the conference. I doubt
- 40:40Speaker 3: it as the industry at whole. Once again, in that level.
- 40:54Speaker 3: With that, we want to go back to talk about
- 40:55Speaker 3: something that we had a conversation with Bridget on with
- 41:00Speaker 3: how so many of the AI users currently being men
- 41:04Speaker 3: and why this is both an argument for and against
- 41:07Speaker 3: women to use AI. So we've talked about the fact
- 41:11Speaker 3: that many people have used this as a tactic for women,
- 41:17Speaker 3: whether it's saying y'all need to catch up. If you're
- 41:19Speaker 3: not using AI, you're going to be left behind. But
- 41:22Speaker 3: at the same time, women who do use AI are
- 41:25Speaker 3: being called lazy as where men are being innovative if
- 41:28Speaker 3: they use AI. So there's like trap of both these things,
- 41:30Speaker 3: but also women understand using AI could be a trap
- 41:34Speaker 3: because AI is not infallible. Women are a little more
- 41:37Speaker 3: hesitant and like, I don't trust this system as they should.
- 41:43Speaker 3: Let's just be real honest because also AI has not
- 41:46Speaker 3: been kind because they do have biases because they're trained
- 41:50Speaker 3: on biases.
- 41:52Speaker 2: Which is typically against women, right?
- 41:55Speaker 3: With all that, the idea that women are going to
- 41:57Speaker 3: be left behind because women are not using AI, even though, again,
- 42:01Speaker 3: there is an equal number of those who either oppose
- 42:03Speaker 3: it or at least are weary of it. So according
- 42:06Speaker 3: to that GDC article they write, at least this year's
- 42:11Speaker 3: survey showed that over half, 52% of game industry professionals
- 42:16Speaker 3: think generative AI is having a negative impact on the
- 42:19Speaker 3: game industry. up from 30% the year before and 18%
- 42:23Speaker 3: the year prior. Workers in visual and technical arts, 64%,
- 42:28Speaker 3: game design and narrative, 63%, and game programming, 59%, hold
- 42:32Speaker 3: the most unfavorable views. We also saw a great deal
- 42:37Speaker 3: of opposition among those in quality assurance and community support,
- 42:41Speaker 3: but those sample sizes were relatively small. So at least
- 42:47Speaker 3: half of them were like, uh-huh.
- 42:49Speaker 2: Maybe AI is not the way to go. We don't
- 42:51Speaker 2: trust it.
- 42:51Speaker 3: And that number is increasing for a reason, I think,
- 42:56Speaker 3: even though, again, women are being told that they're being
- 43:00Speaker 3: left behind if they don't use it.
- 43:03Speaker 1: Kind of odd.
- 43:04Speaker 3: According to the CEO of Women in Games 2026, they
- 43:08Speaker 3: wrote a manifesto who seems to be saying AI is
- 43:13Speaker 3: not going anywhere, so.
- 43:16Speaker 2: Let's fix AI.
- 43:20Speaker 3: Instead of saying we should be weary of AI. So
- 43:23Speaker 3: there's just kind of like this understanding from her saying, okay, y'all,
- 43:30Speaker 3: we need to figure out this narrative. Since we can't
- 43:32Speaker 3: leave AI behind, we need to have more women at
- 43:36Speaker 3: the table, which is not wrong, which we've been saying
- 43:39Speaker 3: from jump. If you go back to us talking about
- 43:42Speaker 3: AI with our interview, Katrina, how many years ago, several
- 43:45Speaker 3: years ago, when AI was really coming into play, public
- 43:50Speaker 3: viewing and people are debating what was happening. We talked
- 43:53Speaker 3: about that, about how are women, how are women being
- 43:57Speaker 3: placed in these conversations? Are they a part of these conversations?
- 44:01Speaker 3: And we've said that, that this might be a thing
- 44:03Speaker 3: that we need to talk about. And she is seemingly
- 44:06Speaker 3: saying the same thing. So this is from gamedeveloper.com, who
- 44:11Speaker 3: is kind of taking a criticism.
- 44:13Speaker 2: Towards her viewpoint. They wrote this. Dr.
- 44:17Speaker 3: Marie Claire Osserman, CEO of nonprofit organization Women in Games,
- 44:20Speaker 3: says that, quote, ethical A.I. should augment human creativity. So
- 44:25Speaker 3: she's calling for, again, an action to rebalance gender representation
- 44:29Speaker 3: in the gaming industry. And with that, how and why
- 44:31Speaker 3: they need to empower women in the gaming industry again.
- 44:35Speaker 2: So she's talking about how we do we do this.
- 44:38Speaker 3: And one of her key points was allow for women
- 44:41Speaker 3: to be at the conversation in developing A.I., She's not wrong.
- 44:48Speaker 2: Obviously, we've talked about this.
- 44:49Speaker 3: If we're going to talk about growth, if we're talking
- 44:51Speaker 3: about something that could be a good use, you have
- 44:54Speaker 3: to have people who should be a part of the table,
- 44:57Speaker 3: especially when they represent half of the population, right? So again,
- 45:02Speaker 3: from that same article they write, one of the reasons
- 45:04Speaker 3: she argues that, quote, AI virtual art worlds and the
- 45:08Speaker 3: metaverse will define tomorrow. And as such, women's must help
- 45:11Speaker 3: shape that future, not simply play within it. When asked
- 45:15Speaker 3: about the vision behind this point, as well as what
- 45:17Speaker 3: role will women play in influencing and reshaping it, Eisenman
- 45:20Speaker 3: said that her vision is one where these technologies are
- 45:23Speaker 3: built to reflect the full diversity of the people who
- 45:26Speaker 3: use them. So her response was, that simply cannot happen
- 45:30Speaker 3: if women are absent from the rooms where creative, technical,
- 45:33Speaker 3: and ethical decisions are made. She continued in an email response.
- 45:37Speaker 3: Women must be involved not only as participants or consumers,
- 45:41Speaker 3: but as designers, engineers, artists, leaders, and decision makers, So again,
- 45:45Speaker 3: these are not wrong. I think this is that bigger
- 46:12Speaker 3: conversation of what are we looking at? What are we seeing?
- 46:15Speaker 3: How do we navigate both? Just because someone may be
- 46:20Speaker 3: opposed to AI in general and think that the whole
- 46:22Speaker 3: solution is to take AI out of it doesn't necessarily
- 46:26Speaker 3: mean they don't also need to be safeguarded by having
- 46:28Speaker 3: women at the table. So it's an interesting conversation to
- 46:33Speaker 3: see with Women in Games because Women in Games is
- 46:35Speaker 3: a big, big nonprofit that has done a lot and
- 46:39Speaker 3: bringing women into the forefront in conversation in gaming industry.
- 46:43Speaker 3: So there's so much to be said in that. Once again,
- 46:46Speaker 3: it comes down to this level, like there's not enough research.
- 46:51Speaker 3: There's not enough conversation about what is happening. We're not
- 46:55Speaker 3: seeing or not given numbers about how AI has affected
- 47:01Speaker 3: the jobs of people in the gaming industry. Again, one
- 47:05Speaker 3: in four have been laid off in the last couple
- 47:07Speaker 3: of years. That's a huge number. We've seen tech have
- 47:10Speaker 3: a giant amount of layoffs in that in general. Some
- 47:15Speaker 3: of it has been due to AI. Some of it
- 47:17Speaker 3: has been just done out of corporate greed. Some of
- 47:20Speaker 3: it has been done out of mistakes and they had
- 47:22Speaker 3: to rehire people. That's been the funnest ones to see.
- 47:29Speaker 3: I've been looking to see about people reacting to her comments.
- 47:33Speaker 3: So obviously game developer, they weren't necessarily completely wrong. ragging
- 47:38Speaker 3: on her necessarily, but they definitely were like, eh, you
- 47:41Speaker 3: sure you want to say it this way? Trying to
- 47:43Speaker 3: get her to defend her point instead of understanding where
- 47:46Speaker 3: she was coming from. We talked about this with Bridget
- 47:49Speaker 3: with content creators trying to be like, oh, y'all need
- 47:52Speaker 3: to come on board. You better do these things or
- 47:54Speaker 3: you're going to be left behind. But also trying to
- 47:57Speaker 3: sell shit in order to, they're being bought out by
- 48:02Speaker 3: sponsored AI companies, by AI companies that are sponsoring them.
- 48:06Speaker 2: And so their take was really.
- 48:08Speaker 3: Tainted, I think is the best way to put it.
- 48:12Speaker 3: But at the same time, they weren't completely wrong. But
- 48:17Speaker 3: it's not so much necessarily that women need to do
- 48:21Speaker 3: more or use more AI, but women need to be
- 48:24Speaker 3: included more in the creation of these companies and the
- 48:28Speaker 3: navigation of these companies and also how they're being coded
- 48:31Speaker 3: or how they're being trained.
- 48:33Speaker 2: Which we know they're being trained. Maybe even buy some
- 48:38Speaker 2: of our stuff.
- 48:41Speaker 1: Against our will.
- 48:43Speaker 2: Not with our permission, dot, dot, dot. We don't give permission.
- 48:48Speaker 2: Say that on. Yeah.
- 48:49Speaker 1: If that works at all, we don't give permission.
- 48:52Speaker 3: But back to, I was looking to see if there
- 48:56Speaker 3: was any reactions to her comments.
- 48:58Speaker 2: I knew that would be backlash. We knew there'd be backlash.
- 49:00Speaker 3: And I mean, even I have a lot of critiques
- 49:02Speaker 3: in my own hearing of this are like, Oh, I
- 49:04Speaker 3: think both of these things need to be redressed. Like,
- 49:07Speaker 3: How is AI being used? We should talk about, should
- 49:10Speaker 3: we be standing up to AI being used, taking jobs
- 49:13Speaker 3: from people? Also, yes, it should have women included in
- 49:18Speaker 3: these conversations because at least maybe there's... going to be
- 49:20Speaker 3: some rhetoric of like, hey, we should slow this. Hey,
- 49:25Speaker 3: we know this is not an all like be all
- 49:27Speaker 3: end all thing. We need more people. But the Reddit,
- 49:32Speaker 3: I was reading through some of the Reddit comments because
- 49:34Speaker 3: that's what popped up. Because again, there's not a lot
- 49:36Speaker 3: of information happening. And the comments have nothing to do
- 49:41Speaker 3: with AI any. So one woman came specifically on here
- 49:46Speaker 3: asking about this article. And she was like, what are
- 49:50Speaker 3: y'all's thoughts? Have you seen layoffs? Has AI affected you
- 49:53Speaker 3: in the gaming industry? People have kind of like come
- 49:56Speaker 3: back and forth and talk a little bit. And this
- 49:58Speaker 3: is one comment who deleted his post. obviously, he says,
- 50:02Speaker 3: why doesn't she get a group of women together and
- 50:05Speaker 3: make a fucking video game? A video game that targets
- 50:08Speaker 3: a female audience. The video game equivalent of the Twilight
- 50:14Speaker 3: series or the movie Barbie or Sex and the City.
- 50:19Speaker 1: Wow.
- 50:20Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Someone responded, creating requires talent and skill.
- 50:26Speaker 3: Co-opting the work of others requires far less talent.
- 50:30Speaker 2: As in, like, you know. Women can't create. Women can't create.
- 50:38Speaker 3: They won't do that because they have no interest in
- 50:40Speaker 3: making video games and nor is their intentions to make
- 50:44Speaker 3: video games. Their purpose is to ruin entertainment media, in
- 50:47Speaker 3: this case, that appeals to straight men and to upset
- 50:50Speaker 3: and make men miserable.
- 50:54Speaker 1: That's interesting. By going along with AI, wanting guardrails but
- 51:00Speaker 1: being like, you know. Yes, yes.
- 51:02Speaker 3: Wanting guardrails to, this is the response. And I was like, well,
- 51:07Speaker 3: this is why we can't have any good conversation. This is,
- 51:10Speaker 3: just kidding, that was very, but like, this is kind
- 51:12Speaker 3: of the problem in when women come back with, we
- 51:17Speaker 3: have to do this because we need a safety rail.
- 51:23Speaker 3: We need something to make sure that women's voices are
- 51:26Speaker 3: heard and we know that AI is not right now
- 51:29Speaker 3: safe for women and it continues to not be safe.
- 51:32Speaker 2: Because it will be hard-coded, she is correct. What we are.
- 51:34Speaker 3: Seeing is something being like, this is going to be
- 51:36Speaker 3: the future now. And people are using it so factually
- 51:44Speaker 3: that this is the information they're going to continue to get.
- 51:46Speaker 3: But this is the response. Instead of giving good critique
- 51:50Speaker 3: in the conversations, they'll be like, oh, no, we're fearful
- 51:52Speaker 3: that AI will take jobs. They are giving misinformation. Instead,
- 51:56Speaker 3: they're like, no, women want to ruin everything. This is
- 51:58Speaker 3: why they use AI. And I'm like, this is that
- 52:00Speaker 3: point that we were coming back to with Bridget, is
- 52:03Speaker 3: that if women do use AI, that's what's being said.
- 52:07Speaker 2: Yep. And I was like, how.
- 52:11Speaker 3: Great of a point is this? You've proven the point
- 52:14Speaker 3: that we've been saying.
- 52:16Speaker 1: You illustrated it.
- 52:17Speaker 2: Perfectly.
- 52:18Speaker 1: Yeah. I do want to say, I feel like there's
- 52:24Speaker 1: an interesting, I don't know if divides the right word,
- 52:30Speaker 1: but AI has just gone, it's skyrocketed, right? That I
- 52:38Speaker 1: often say I've never knowingly used AI, but I know
- 52:41Speaker 1: I've used AI. And I'm not going to deny that.
- 52:46Speaker 1: The game I mentioned earlier, Alien Isolation. The alien is
- 52:50Speaker 1: so scary because it's AI and it learns what you
- 52:55Speaker 1: do when you're scared. And a lot of games have
- 52:59Speaker 1: that with it. the non-playable characters, the NPCs, where they're
- 53:04Speaker 1: run by AI. And maybe I'm wrong. People can yell
- 53:09Speaker 1: at me, but I feel like there's a difference between
- 53:11Speaker 1: that and something that is the creative aspect of it,
- 53:16Speaker 1: as opposed to you're using AI to run these characters
- 53:22Speaker 1: in the game. So it's not like games haven't been
- 53:27Speaker 1: using AI before this. They have. uh, I don't, I'm
- 53:31Speaker 1: not well versed in what the conversation is now other
- 53:34Speaker 1: than the layoffs. And there was a big strike with
- 53:38Speaker 1: the voice actors about AI. Uh, I think it was
- 53:43Speaker 1: right after, uh, the like writers union and actors, the
- 53:49Speaker 1: SAG strike happened. There was a video game, like voice
- 53:54Speaker 1: actors strike that happened. Um, Because I can see that, unfortunately,
- 54:01Speaker 1: I can see companies easily replacing voice actors with AI. Right.
- 54:09Speaker 2: I mean, I think this happened a few times.
- 54:12Speaker 3: There is a conversation within the gaming world, and this
- 54:14Speaker 3: is kind of outside of also including, obviously, but talking
- 54:18Speaker 3: about they need more unions.
- 54:21Speaker 2: In the gaming industry.
- 54:23Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 54:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 54:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 54:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 54:27Speaker 3: Again, it was an interesting conversation. There's so many things
- 54:29Speaker 3: and I hear what the CEO is saying for sure
- 54:36Speaker 3: because it's happening. It's happening to the point that our
- 54:40Speaker 3: government is putting things into law to protect.
- 54:44Speaker 2: The billionaires and the creators.
- 54:47Speaker 3: And is the worst case scenario being that we need
- 54:52Speaker 3: to have women at the table in hopes that at
- 54:54Speaker 3: least they can shape.
- 54:58Speaker 2: Some of the darkness.
- 55:00Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 55:05Speaker 2: Oh Lord. I know I took it down a dark road.
- 55:07Speaker 2: Y'all I did.
- 55:08Speaker 3: Um, kind of in this conversation, but I think this
- 55:11Speaker 3: is something we have to pay attention to in every aspect.
- 55:14Speaker 3: When we talk about intersectional stuff, when we talk about
- 55:16Speaker 3: the looks of it, and of course this doesn't include
- 55:18Speaker 3: what it looks like for women of color.
- 55:20Speaker 2: There's no information on that much either.
- 55:22Speaker 3: I will say when I told you about the, uh, uh, GDC, uh, event,
- 55:29Speaker 3: the conference, that when I was like, it was mainly
- 55:32Speaker 3: white men that was taking, cis men that was taking
- 55:34Speaker 3: the thing, I did notice that there was no indigenous
- 55:37Speaker 3: people at all being included and then very minor amount
- 55:41Speaker 3: of like any type of women of color.
- 55:44Speaker 2: So interesting.
- 55:50Speaker 1: Unfortunately, yeah. But it is wonderful that to see people
