- 0:07[SPEAKER_01]: In this episode of Getting To Know The Dead, I'm going to be looking into the murder of 23-year-old Harvard student, Jane Britain.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_01]: That's a young woman who in 1969 was brutally murdered in her apartment.
- 0:24[SPEAKER_01]: Now the interesting thing about this case is it's so multi-leveled.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_01]: but also landing on that viewpoint by police or statistics that if you murdered, it's going to generally be by someone that you know, a friend or a family member, or in Jane's case, a lover.
- 0:43[SPEAKER_01]: The free spirit at Anthropology student came from a well-to-do family.
- 0:50[SPEAKER_01]: I guess you could say, in today's term, she'd be classified as a career student.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_01]: She's known to have several lovers, she had an abortion at the time, which was unusual.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_01]: And she was known to be having an affair with her teacher, or a professor.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_01]: At the time of her murder, she had a boyfriend who, in her diary, she easily admits that she was unsatisfied with.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_01]: He was not a good lover.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_01]: He was weak.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_01]: Not what she considered to be a man, and what she was looking for, although her parents liked him.
- 1:30[SPEAKER_01]: But at this time, she was also rumoured to be having an affair with her professor, who in her diary she eludes to, as Mr.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_01]: Sexy Ice, a married man who had no problem dragging her into a closet and fucking her.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_01]: But then afterwards, she was cold and elusive.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_01]: He was even failing her apparently.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_01]: and this is where our story begins.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_01]: Now, as mentioned at the top of the show, in this episode, I'm going to be looking into the death of 23-year-old Archaeological Student, Jane Britton.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_01]: It was on January 7th, only the first day back at school after the Christmas break.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_01]: The Jane Britton's boyfriend called her at her apartment because she'd missed a test when she didn't answer.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_01]: They went over.
- 2:51[SPEAKER_01]: Both of them students in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Harvard University,
- 2:56[SPEAKER_01]: a university for the elite.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_01]: So if you're going to miss a test, well, it's going to be a good reason.
- 3:03[SPEAKER_01]: Now, James Boyfriend, one Jim Amphries moves in the same class.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_01]: Once he didn't answer, he went over to a apartment, and apparently the front buzzer on the door was always broken, so he didn't even have the buzzer, he just went through one upstairs.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_01]: And the lock on her door had been broken for a while, so he just opened the door and went in.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_01]: And once in, nothing seemed to miss.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_01]: Everything was in place.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_01]: Then he went into a bedroom, and she was laying on the bed.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_01]: On a stomach, face down, naked, with her fur coat covering her head.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_01]: Now what Jim did next has been examined by critical thinkers, by the police, by the FBI, and by true crime buffs alike.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_01]: Instead of taking the code off his girlfriend's head and seeing if she was okay, he ran next door, banged on the neighbor's door, who also went to his school.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_01]: And he told him that he thought Jane was sick.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_01]: Now this is unusual for many reasons.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_01]: because laying naked on your bed face down with a coat over your head.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_01]: And your eyes up in the air is not the usual thing that someone would do when they're sick.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_01]: So why would Jim think that this is something that Jane would do?
- 4:27[SPEAKER_01]: So the two neighbors came over, a couple, which Jane also knew they'd taken care of a cat and her turtle when she was over in Iran on their psychological take.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_01]: This couple ran into her apartment and they took the coat off of Jane, and as she was with a guts and a brains all over her pillow, police officer said it looked like a can of peaches had been opened up.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_01]: And she was dead, she was deceased, and that was quite obvious, Rick Amortis had said it.
- 4:58[SPEAKER_01]: Now, by police officer's own account, her boyfriend Jim Hanfrey's was distraught.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_01]: It's not fallen out everywhere, blu-bring, distraught, something that you cannot fake.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_01]: But still, the police on the scene was struck by the fact, and in fact stuck on the fact that it was very strange for Jim to run out of the room and not lift the jacket off of his girlfriend's head.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_01]: Almost as if he already knew what was underneath that jacket, and that he ran next door to get the neighbors so he could establish an alibi.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_01]: But also, it has been known on previous homicides, where people who killed someone who was close to them, after the murder, they don't want to look at them.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_01]: So they throw a towel or a blanket or whatever over them.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_01]: The guilt, the shame, and don't think the cops weren't aware of that.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_01]: The first thing that the four offices on the scene noticed, the Jane was covered in a red powder.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_01]: There was red powder on her head wound, and there was red powder over the rest of her naked body.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_01]: A red powder that they could not identify was very chalky, had a very stone, like coarse field to it, like it was ground stone.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_01]: Now besides this red powder,
- 6:26[SPEAKER_01]: They dragged the blubbering boyfriend and stole around the apartment, and he confirmed that nothing was missing.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_01]: Nothing had been stolen, there was still money in the drawer, there was jewelry on a dresser, so it was clear that this was not a robbery.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_01]: It was not a monetarily motivated crime, but was also clear to the cops, was this ship and raped.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_01]: Without getting it to detail, they figure she'd been raped.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, since you asked, she had seen him in a mouth.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_01]: She had it in her house, and...
- 7:04[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, she basically had it in every hole that God had given her.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_01]: Let's be honest here.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_01]: And if the killer, at any point, had pings of guilt, it certainly wasn't while he were getting busy on a mouth or ass in a pussy.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_01]: And this was evident to the police, and from what the police have written down, it was evident to Jim.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_01]: the boyfriend.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_01]: No, I don't know how it was evident because I wasn't there, but that's what the police put in the notes.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_01]: It was evident that she'd been given a scene through.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_01]: Now when this hit the newspapers, everybody went Apeshid.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_01]: Jane's father had connections.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_01]: He was vice president, one of Harvard's subsidiary universities.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_01]: So he had a little bit of power.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_01]: He had a little bit of connections.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, she was a free spirit of hip-eat, but she was well-to-do.
- 7:52[SPEAKER_01]: And she was known.
- 7:54[SPEAKER_01]: That's all I can say.
- 7:54[SPEAKER_01]: This girl was known.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_01]: And now she was murdered.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_01]: And they found out it wasn't a robbery.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_01]: Sex was involved.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_01]: and she taken six or seven acts and chops to the head.
- 8:09[SPEAKER_01]: The head would take them right off, so it was brutal.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_01]: The paper's called as crime a passion.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_01]: and that usually points to someone who knew Jane.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_01]: And that's where they figured that's where the cops figured.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_01]: That's where the university figured that's where Franz figured.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_01]: And that's where the FBI figured that the killer was known to Jane Britain.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_01]: And that's how they proceeded with the investigation.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_01]: Number one, her boyfriend was definitely a person of interest.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_01]: Especially when he won't run an other room.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_01]: Even though he will blubber in like a bitch.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_01]: He was definitely a person of interest.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_01]: His behavior.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_01]: was definitely suspicious, and thereafter, whenever the police are investigators, tried to talk to him, he would start blubbing, and cops were starting to wonder, is this at the fence?
- 8:58[SPEAKER_01]: Is this what he's doing so we can't get into a serious conversation where we're pinning him down to times and places and facts, and trying to catch him up on things because I couldn't because he would just start blubbering like a woman all over the place.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_01]: and they were never able to pin him down, and the cops were starting to see a pod into this.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_01]: That this was unusual behavior for a man.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_01]: Now, in one modern times, now,
- 9:28[SPEAKER_01]: There's not such thing as unusual behavior for men because it seems like they're on any men anymore.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_01]: They're all over the place.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_01]: But at that time, it was very kind of dry.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_01]: Male female, this is what females do, this is what males do.
- 9:41[SPEAKER_01]: And they had booked him, mocked him down, to behaving oddly.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_01]: Now at this point, the investigation is focused purely on Harvard, one of America's most prestigious universities, Harvard University and Jane Brins in a circle of friends.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_01]: They figured that it was either the Blubbering Boyfriend or someone known to her.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_01]: And by the way, I mean there were more than a few people who were known to her.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_01]: I mean this girl was not a virgin, she was a little rich girl, she liked putting it out there, hey, this was the sixties, she'd already just had an abortion, she'd had multiple lovers who were known to her, so cops did not have an easy task ahead of them, Matt is worse, Jane's father was a big shot at Harvard,
- 10:32[SPEAKER_01]: And no one wanted to come out and say that his daughter was a slut because it could have implications down the line.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_01]: Implications that could affect their grades, their time at the university, future prospects, and a lot of people were tight-lipped, even if she wasn't.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_01]: And he didn't want to help too much either, because if it made the university look bad, it made his daughter look bad.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_01]: So they weren't exactly holding doors open from investigators.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_01]: And yet there were students and faculty coming forward, but off the record.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_01]: And they were all saying one thing, that Jane had been having an affair with her professor.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_01]: The oldest story in the book, Professor Carl Carloski, married, three kids, who likes banging his students, and she wasn't the only one.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_01]: This guy had a reputation.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_01]: He wore a cape, apparently everybody thought it was a genius, and he liked banging his students.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_01]: And he was banging Jane.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_01]: And this was a good-looking guy.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_01]: He looked like a movie star, compared to Jane's boyfriend who looked like something he had found on some archaeological
- 11:40[SPEAKER_01]: I know that sounds cruel, but I mean genetics can be cruel.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_01]: And so this guy was getting the pussy, but he was getting it because he was good looking.
- 11:48[SPEAKER_01]: He was intelligent, he was charming.
- 11:50[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know about the whole cape thing, but this was in the 60s.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know how things work back then.
- 11:55[SPEAKER_01]: and they had gone to Iran on an archaeological dig in the middle of 1968 and a boyfriend was there and apparently this caused tension.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_01]: He knew she would get him banged and sloppy seconds can cause a bit of taste in your mouth after a while.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I wouldn't know this, but I've heard.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_01]: So there was a lot of tension and to make things worse, this professor, this guy with the cape, he was failing Jane, so he was bangin' her and failing her.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_01]: And he told her if she didn't pull up a socks
- 12:26[SPEAKER_01]: that she'd be out.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_01]: So this guy had some balls.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_01]: He was sinkin' the pink.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_01]: But also fell on her at the same time, so he got her.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_01]: He got to give him credit.
- 12:36[SPEAKER_01]: He was a man of principles.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_01]: If not morals.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_01]: Hell, I like him already.
- 12:41[SPEAKER_01]: Now apparently, all of this was in Jane's diary.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_01]: The detect is found after she was murdered.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_01]: But she never exactly mentioned the professor's name.
- 12:51[SPEAKER_01]: She just called him Mr.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_01]: Sexy Eyes, the married professor.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_01]: So cops knew it was him, but it was very difficult for them to pin him down precisely without a name.
- 13:02[SPEAKER_01]: But several students had come forward and said that they'd seen Jane screaming and crying and saying that she'd been having an affair with the professor and yet he was still failing up.
- 13:11[SPEAKER_01]: And if he did eventually flunk her out of school, she was going to take it to the head of Harvard, expose the whole goddamn thing, to his wife and everything.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_01]: Now when cops approached this Professor Carlovsky and told him what they knew, apparently he was arrogant, dismissive even.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_01]: He lured up, he said he didn't need to talk to them, and without any evidence that couldn't push any further, and plus this guy was wearing a cape which has got to be intimidating if you're a cop.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you know, it gives him the upper hand.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_01]: But invased the Gators was still convinced that it was someone from James in a circle.
- 13:47[SPEAKER_01]: So much so that they secretly filmed her funeral, and they figured their amongst harmonies would also be Hakila.
- 13:56[SPEAKER_01]: Now this theory was solidified when James' autopsy results were released.
- 14:03[SPEAKER_01]: And what they found that Jane was raped, and every hole that God had given her, and the killer had left behind his cum.
- 14:11[SPEAKER_01]: Wish really didn't mean anything with friends speaking what they were in the late 60s, but they also discovered that powder, covering her wounds and covering her body, was called red ochre powder.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_01]: Now this powder was very rare.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_01]: usually found a Middle Eastern country's most prominent in Iran of all places and it was used in ancient burial ceremonies and they weren't sure of the purpose of its use but they figured that it was to help the spirit go into the next world so that it was sprinkled over the body.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_01]: And another culture's they figured if you sprinkled it around the grave, it would ward people off from digging into it, you know, digging into an existing grave.
- 14:52[SPEAKER_01]: Now things get even more fucked up here, because Professor Carl Aufski, the cheating Professor, brought back a box of this red ochre powder.
- 15:04[SPEAKER_01]: from my ran when they were all over there.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_01]: And he would get him bald deep in Jane.
- 15:08[SPEAKER_01]: And the detectors found a big box of this stuff in the university storage room.
- 15:13[SPEAKER_01]: And when they opened this box, a fistful of this red oak powder was missing.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_01]: This rare and expensive ancient powder and a whole fistful of it is missing.
- 15:25[SPEAKER_01]: So the detectors, they went nice, the boyfriend of he took it.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_01]: And of course he got all blubbery and snoddy, and they couldn't get anything out of him that could understand.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_01]: And then they asked the cheating professor, if they took it, and he got a lawyer.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_01]: He didn't have to say anything.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_01]: He lawyered the fuck up, and now for detectives, it was at that end.
- 15:49[SPEAKER_01]: There was no hours to go, but there was some things in the investigation that people felt the detectives were overlooking, or they should have paid more attention to.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_01]: Number one, Jane Britain lived in a high crime area.
- 16:02[SPEAKER_01]: They've been a lot of muggings, a lot of break-ins, and the front door and the buzzers.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_01]: The chains building were regularly broken and they were broken on the night of her murder, meaning someone could have just walked in.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_01]: As well as the lock on James front door was broken, she had regularly complained to the university who owned the building, about the front entrance and her door, but nothing was done.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_01]: On a side note, on the night of Jane's murder, a kid had seen someone about 6-3 running down the back fire escape that led to Jane's apartment.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_01]: They reported it to the police, but police figure the kid was probably just dreaming, imagining it.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_01]: Although by chance, the cheating professor was six foot two.
- 16:47[SPEAKER_01]: Now the investigators had a couple more theories that weren't called pretty quick.
- 16:52[SPEAKER_01]: One of them, which was a pretty big one, was they figured it could have been the Boston Strangler who was operating in that area.
- 16:58[SPEAKER_01]: But it wasn't his ammo.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_01]: He liked all broads, liked gristle, the taste of piss and wiery pubs, and Jane Britten was definitely prime beef.
- 17:10[SPEAKER_01]: And the whole axe thing, it wasn't his style, so they dropped that pretty quickly.
- 17:16[SPEAKER_01]: And after a couple of years, the case went cold.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_01]: It was 49 years later.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_01]: And the world had changed.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_01]: The cheating professor, surely after Jane's death, had left the university.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_01]: But he returned 20 years later, and was now teaching into his 70s.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_01]: And everybody still whispered that he was the killer.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_01]: He was the guy who fucked his student, failed her, and then killed her.
- 17:55[SPEAKER_01]: And it almost become an urban myth, hanging over his head, for 49 years.
- 18:03[SPEAKER_01]: And as for James Boyfriend, Jim Humphreys, the guy who liked the blubber, the cops could never put their finger on her, but they felt that something just wasn't right about him.
- 18:15[SPEAKER_01]: I hate disappeared after face of the earth.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_01]: that had been rumours that he'd fallen off a cliff, and then to a raging river and disappeared while out on some archaeological find.
- 18:26[SPEAKER_01]: But no one could save for sure.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_01]: But I guess I will want to think for sure, he will probably guarantee to be crying whatever he'd said.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_01]: And by now, Malah chains a media family had passed on.
- 18:47[SPEAKER_00]: Who is responsible for Jane's brutal murder will provide some consolation to Jane's surviving family and friends.
- 18:55[SPEAKER_00]: We were able to positively identify Michael Sumpter as the person responsible for Jane's murder.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_01]: And no good, black, drifter, and rapist who spent most of his life in jail, and been abused in women since he was 13 in responsible for three other murders, one of them in the same building as Jane.
- 19:14[SPEAKER_01]: But sadly, he died at cancer in 2001, so he'd never do time for those crimes.
- 19:21[SPEAKER_00]: None of those victims, including Jane Britain, or believed to have known or had had in previous relationship with Mr. Something.
- 19:27[SPEAKER_01]: And so many lives affected.
- 19:30[SPEAKER_01]: rumours, anyone though.
- 19:33[SPEAKER_01]: Time that could be never taken back.
- 19:36[SPEAKER_00]: There are a group of individuals who, for over 50, almost 50 years, have lived under some cloud of suspicion, because there were at least some individuals who believed that they might have been responsible for Jane's murder.
- 19:48[SPEAKER_01]: And all this, because of vastly improved technology.
- 19:51[SPEAKER_01]: As some egghead, getting it into the budget to run the test from the cheese, found inside a Jane Britain.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_01]: but there was one sticking point in the case that no one could have answered.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_01]: How did Jane get that red boudum all over our body?
- 20:10[SPEAKER_01]: And yes sure, there were theories, the most popular being that a boyfriend had come in, found the body, and thinking that it was the professor who killed her, because he knew that Jane was fucking on the side.
- 20:23[SPEAKER_01]: So he quickly went back to the university and grabbed the fist full of the professor's powder, then rushed back and sprinkled it all over Jane's dead body.
- 20:36[SPEAKER_01]: By knowing that the fingers would all be pointing at the only professor, and it would finally get what was common to them for fucking his girl, and that's why he was squeezing out so many snoddy tears.
- 20:52[SPEAKER_01]: Because while it was there he read out diary, and he found out the chain didn't love them, and that the professor wrote true love.
- 21:00[SPEAKER_01]: And now she was gone.
- 21:09[SPEAKER_01]: I hope you've enjoyed this episode of Getting To Know The Dead.
- 21:13[SPEAKER_01]: And this is that bug saying, I'll tell next time, Adios.
- 21:18[SPEAKER_01]: And this bug cast has been taken from one of my films.
