- 0:00Our panel of break fix Petrolhead are back for another rousing.
- 0:03What should I buy?
- 0:04Debate using unique shopping criteria.
- 0:07They're challenged to find our first time collector, the best vehicle
- 0:10that will make their friends go.
- 0:12Where do you get that?
- 0:13Or what the hell is wrong with you at the next cars and coffee?
- 0:19Awesome and awkward all at the same time.
- 0:22That's how I like to describe the nineties.
- 0:24Time when bands like Nirvana, sublime and Green Day were all we would talk about.
- 0:29And the cars we salivated over had exotic names like Supra RX seven and GTR.
- 0:35That's right Brad.
- 0:36And tonight our special guest is fellow car enthusiast Mark Shank, who has called
- 0:41upon our panel of esteemed Petrolhead.
- 0:43To answer the question we love to ask, what should I buy?
- 0:47And in this case, nineties cars.
- 0:50So we wanna welcome Mark to the show and our panel of GTMs
- 0:54that'll be here with us tonight.
- 0:55So welcome Mark.
- 0:56Hey, thank you.
- 0:57Thanks for having me on.
- 0:57I'm excited to talk about this.
- 0:59I've been thinking about this project for a while, uh, where I kind of go
- 1:02with my next car, and I think I have landed in the nineties, so I've been
- 1:06trying to figure out what I wanna do before we dive down this rabbit hole.
- 1:09Mark, why don't you tell us a little about your car history?
- 1:12What's your driving today?
- 1:14Mm, car history.
- 1:15So, uh, I, I kind of, I've kind of been all over the place.
- 1:20First kind of fast car that I had was a 94 Z 28 Camaro.
- 1:25It was unfortunately an automatic that was what I could afford at the time.
- 1:29The transmission went out on it and was able to put a shift kit in it, which was
- 1:33a lot of fun 'cause it would kind of break transmission mounts on an annual basis.
- 1:37It shifted so hard, you could definitely break it loose between gears.
- 1:41Had a 98 eclipse, GST, which I absolutely loved.
- 1:452000 6, 3 50 z 2006.
- 1:48E 46 M three.
- 1:49With the, with the manual, let's see, uh, had 1985 Porsche nine 11
- 1:54Carrera that I picked up in 2009.
- 1:57That I used as a daily, uh, in Southern California.
- 2:00So I grew up in Frederick, myself as well.
- 2:02Lived in San Diego for about six years.
- 2:04It was such an awesome place for air cooled nine elevens.
- 2:08I mean, the, you, there were so many great shops that could work on them.
- 2:11There were so, like, I had this thing that was out in the desert, its whole life.
- 2:14Didn't have a square centimeter, rust and anywhere.
- 2:16I love that car.
- 2:17Was in mint condition.
- 2:19Spent a ton of money on it.
- 2:20Kids came, had to get rid of it.
- 2:22So I got a a, a brand new.
- 2:23I ordered.
- 2:24Did the track day pickup for, uh, uh, what is it, F 85, A 2015 M
- 2:30three, which was the four door.
- 2:31'cause now I had a kid in a car seat, but I did get the manual in it.
- 2:34I, I do think everybody should own a four door manual car.
- 2:38It's a rear wheel drive.
- 2:39It's a lot of fun.
- 2:39And then I, I turned that in.
- 2:41I got a 20 16 9 11 car.
- 2:44I guess that was a 9 9 1 0.1.
- 2:46And I have a BM BMW X five V eight for family hauler.
- 2:49The, not the M version.
- 2:51And my, my fun car is behind me.
- 2:539 9 1 0.2. GT three with a six speed manual.
- 2:57Uh, you thought this was a, an image background behind me?
- 3:00It's not.
- 3:00It's my actual car.
- 3:01Um.
- 3:03Which I'm, I'm sitting here looking at like having anxiety over how close
- 3:07that is to the, the garage door from this angle, I, I, I kind of was like
- 3:11a two car person rotating cars around.
- 3:14I do think I've married that thing behind me.
- 3:17I just love it to death.
- 3:18So I think I'm, I'm, I'm with that one for a while, but I can, I can get a lift
- 3:21and, uh, I'll just put something, um, underneath it or above it or something.
- 3:25So in addition to that, you've actually done some ter cross and track days with,
- 3:29uh, PCA and some other groups, right?
- 3:30So you're not just a collector or a connoisseur.
- 3:33You've been on track as well.
- 3:35A little bit.
- 3:36I, I do not want, do not want to over represent my track experience at all.
- 3:40I've done a couple BMW uh, driving school events with the, with the, the
- 3:44M three side, you know, some autocross.
- 3:47But, uh, I, I want to do more of the Porsche Club.
- 3:49I actually have a neighbor out here as pretty active in it as well.
- 3:52I want to do more in that space.
- 3:53For me, it's, it's been a time thing.
- 3:56My job is tough and you've got little kids, so I'm hoping, you know, a little
- 4:00older, a little more independent and, you know, they can run around on a
- 4:03Saturday without harassing me all day.
- 4:05Um, but yeah, you know, I, I, I would absolutely love to get to a
- 4:09track a few times a year now, and then hopefully when I'm a little
- 4:12older, do that more frequently.
- 4:14Since we've got a little bit of background into your car history, and
- 4:17I, I know, and I know in talking with you, you have a, you have a very good
- 4:22knowledge of cars and whatnot and we kind of had a precursor conversation
- 4:25to this about cars in the nineties.
- 4:27And so, you know, as we get into our basically main event here, our,
- 4:30what should I buy panel, you know, a bunch of us have come prepared with
- 4:33some options for you about going about and buying a nineties car.
- 4:38What we're really interested in is getting your shopping criteria, you know, what
- 4:41you're looking for, price range, some things you're not interested in, some
- 4:45things you may be interested, et cetera.
- 4:47So why don't you lay that out for the panel so we can better
- 4:49focus on some of our suggestions.
- 4:51Awesome.
- 4:52I think the panel will be fun because I love a lot of things and
- 4:55you know, I'm, I'm really kind of open, so a couple things, right?
- 4:58I'm, I'm kind of OCD, so I want something that I can get in really
- 5:02that I doesn't have to get it in really good condition, but I have to be able
- 5:05to get it to really good condition.
- 5:08Right?
- 5:08And so sometimes, you know, that can be harder with some of the older ones.
- 5:11I wanna have a very nice car and I'm, I'm fine with paying the money
- 5:15to get it there, but, but I like, you know, just clean and tight.
- 5:18No rattles, no no excuses.
- 5:20Really good shape.
- 5:21The, there are so many kind of different.
- 5:23Aspects of nineties car culture.
- 5:25You know, I, I loved all of it.
- 5:27I love the Japanese unobtainium that you played on a PlayStation one, right.
- 5:31So I'm born in 81, so I'm in high school and graduated in 99.
- 5:35So, you know, kind of grew up through that.
- 5:38But I also grew up my entire life going to car shows, which
- 5:41was mostly American muscle.
- 5:43You know, I've, I've always thought about kind of different
- 5:46things that might be fun there.
- 5:48So I've really enjoyed, you know, the Japanese sports car
- 5:50aside, the American muscle.
- 5:51I want something also that I can get.
- 5:54Pretty fast, right?
- 5:55I mean, not, not not fast in a, in a zero to 60 time or fast in a, like a
- 6:01particular lap time, but I want something that can feel fast, overpower, its
- 6:05traction for most of its gears, and that you can be a general hooligan in.
- 6:11So we were like having that debate.
- 6:13Like to me that kind of crosses out like a Ferrari 3 55, although those
- 6:16things are probably, I'm not sure they're worth the price at this point.
- 6:19Super unreliable too, but hey, whatever.
- 6:21Yeah, yeah, those generation V eights.
- 6:23I think one of the thing I, I did enjoy about it that I should
- 6:26mention, like the idea of kind of customization and modification, right?
- 6:30So I'm not in this to get something, leave it bone stock and hopefully sell
- 6:34it, you know, for some money later.
- 6:36I don't care if I'm devaluing it, I'm doing this for me.
- 6:39I'm not doing it as an investment or something, something stupid like that.
- 6:43So I, I do, you know, as you know this, this is a little bit of the
- 6:4812-year-old kid who had the nine 30 with the whale tail on the wall,
- 6:52and, and that's why I didn't get the touring package on my GT three.
- 6:55And I don't give a shit if the touring package was the cool thing to do.
- 6:59Exactly.
- 7:00It didn't have a giant, it didn't have a giant SPO on the back and
- 7:02my nine 30 poster did, uh, yeah, I mean, it's a little juvenile.
- 7:06I don't care.
- 7:07I'm doing it for fun.
- 7:08I think that modification and customization part of it
- 7:10is definitely part of that.
- 7:11Call Karcher that I, that I really enjoyed.
- 7:13And I think you said something just to, you know, kind of round out this thought
- 7:16before we turn it over to the panel to start throwing up their suggestion.
- 7:19I think one thing that was really almost prophetic in a way was when you and I were
- 7:24talking and you said, you know, looking back now on a car from the nineties is
- 7:28the same as when I was a kid, looking back at some of those cars from the fifties
- 7:31and sixties, it's the same time gap.
- 7:33It's that same generational gap, and then it makes you feel super
- 7:37old when you realize that a nineties car is 30 years old at this point.
- 7:41Right.
- 7:41So, pretty crazy.
- 7:43It it is.
- 7:43You're, you're absolutely right.
- 7:45So, you know, growing up, and I'm looking at American muscle in the
- 7:47late eighties and early nineties, that's how old these cars are now.
- 7:51Right.
- 7:51And I'm going through with my dad and he's telling me about, you know, my dad owned
- 7:55a ton of muscle cars, uh, back in the day.
- 7:57He, I grew up with him.
- 7:59Quarter mile bikes were like his gr our garage.
- 8:01We never had any cars in our two car garage.
- 8:04It was full of motorcycles.
- 8:05And so, you know, there was a lot of motorcycles, but he
- 8:08loved cars, you know, was always talking about the American muscle.
- 8:11And so yeah, that, that epiphany, I, it was literally just
- 8:14kind of dawned on me one day.
- 8:15I'm like, wait a minute.
- 8:17I am the same distance from those cars.
- 8:19Now it's a tribute to the quality of the cars that they're not all
- 8:23completely rotisserie restored like they were back then.
- 8:26Right.
- 8:26They had to be because they'd fallen apart twice over by
- 8:29the time you got 'em to 1990.
- 8:31But, but at the same time, people are just starting to think
- 8:34about, how do I restore this car?
- 8:35You're finding them still unrestored.
- 8:37I don't wanna get into this 10 years later and the market is kind of already defined,
- 8:42and I wanna get in front of it and be able to do something before the market tells
- 8:46you what to do and, and people, yeah.
- 8:48You know, start kind of figuring it out.
- 8:50Let's shock the panel a little bit because you just slightly went there,
- 8:53but then didn't say what your budget was.
- 8:56Oh.
- 8:56And so from a price range, I think all in.
- 8:59With like getting the car and, and you know, I'm not, I'm not
- 9:02gonna do much work myself, right?
- 9:04So I'm paying somebody to do work on it.
- 9:06I, yeah.
- 9:07So all in, uh, call it a hundred grand.
- 9:11Alright guys, this, this is, this is the mission now, all right?
- 9:14Car from the nineties, fully restored.
- 9:16It's gotta be ahoo, hooligan car, a hundred grand or less.
- 9:20How about we go to Mike?
- 9:21Well, so you mentioned having owned a, uh, a Z 28.
- 9:24I love Mustangs, by the way.
- 9:26I, I love Mustangs.
- 9:27But the Camaro had so much more power in that generation.
- 9:30I think you'd have to be a little silly to pick the, the five liter
- 9:33stock if you're looking for that more muscle car look, I would actually
- 9:38pitch the, the Camaro's cousin.
- 9:40Oh, specifically the WS six.
- 9:43Yes.
- 9:43WS six.
- 9:44Yep.
- 9:44I was always infatuated with those cars when they came out.
- 9:46They were, I mean, a friend of mine had a 92 Camaro, but it was only
- 9:50the, the Rs, but the Firebird WS six with that big, uh, evil Ram air hood.
- 9:56Yeah.
- 9:57And the commercials they had were from Polar.
- 9:59The evil commercial was awesome.
- 10:01And then they had, when it first came out, they had Chris Tucker driving
- 10:04one and one of his buddy cop movies.
- 10:06Like, you haven't seen Chris Tucker in a movie in 25 years, but the last one you
- 10:11saw, man, he's driving a WS six around.
- 10:14So I had the opportunity to drive a stock one, and I got to drive
- 10:18Mike Snyder's, SCCA pro solo car.
- 10:20And Brad remembers that, TransAm.
- 10:22And I tell you what, when you mod a WS six and you really straighten out
- 10:25that suspension and get it dialed in, that car is a handful, but
- 10:29it's also a hell of a lot of fun.
- 10:30So mad props to Mike on that suggestion.
- 10:33I actually hadn't even thought about the WS six.
- 10:35Yeah, the second he brought up Camaro.
- 10:36I'm like, Ooh.
- 10:38You know, it just, it struck a memory of that car.
- 10:40And plus, since the WS six went with the LS motor, you have
- 10:44the whole LS aftermarket to go.
- 10:46Oh, absolutely.
- 10:47Absolutely.
- 10:48Big, big turbos.
- 10:49Big turbos.
- 10:49Yeah.
- 10:50Yeah, mine, mine was an LT one.
- 10:52It was prior to that, but yeah, towards the end they dropped the LS in it.
- 10:55So is, is the GOAT an option as well, or is that, no, the goat's later.
- 10:59Right, so that's a two thousands car, so that won't work.
- 11:012003, two.
- 11:02Well, hang on, hang on.
- 11:03Okay, so this is a good point.
- 11:04This is a good point.
- 11:04You know, I guess this is up to me.
- 11:06I think some of the best cars from the nineties were made in the early naughties.
- 11:10Right.
- 11:11They had matured it.
- 11:12They figured it out.
- 11:13Like the NSX you want is one of those last couple years.
- 11:16Yeah, that's true.
- 11:17I'll give you that.
- 11:18Yes.
- 11:18It's like the best car from the nineties, but yeah, sure
- 11:21it's from 2002, but whatever.
- 11:22I don't care.
- 11:23I'm not picky.
- 11:24Right.
- 11:24You're E 39 M fives.
- 11:26There's a lot of really great, I think if you look at its contemporaries
- 11:30at the time, in the early two thousands, they're like, ew.
- 11:33You know, like, okay, it's still solid rear axle still doing this.
- 11:36It's still doing that.
- 11:37You know, Mustang had that brief flirtation with independent rear
- 11:40suspension in the cobras, but when you compare it to the nineties cars that
- 11:43it was the mature version of I agree.
- 11:45I agree with, I totally accept, I will totally accept early
- 11:47naughties cars, but it has to be representative of the nineties.
- 11:51It can't be like a. Like a 9, 9 6 turbo or something, which is like, cool, but
- 11:55that's definitely not a nineties car.
- 11:57Yeah, I gotcha.
- 11:57I gotcha.
- 11:58So Mountain man, Dan, since we're talking GM Mountain man, Dan I, I'm
- 12:01on board with Mike's suggestion of the WS six and for that particular
- 12:06one with the Ramir was 98 to oh two.
- 12:08So those were the years that they made that particular version of the WS six.
- 12:11And I'm all on board with that suggestion, Mike.
- 12:14Huge kudos for that.
- 12:15But a question I had for the budget.
- 12:18Is that number you threw out the initial purchase?
- 12:20Or does that include modified?
- 12:21No, I want that to be, I want that to be all in.
- 12:23Right.
- 12:24So it kind of excludes something like an R 34 because it's not gonna work.
- 12:29Right.
- 12:29But you could do an R 32 and restore it and build it up, and
- 12:33you could do a really great, super powerful car for that kind of money.
- 12:36If that's what, if that's what you wanted to do.
- 12:38I, I don't mean to make anyone go discuss.
- 12:40I will not do an Impala ss I'll tell you that.
- 12:43I can't do it.
- 12:44I can't do it.
- 12:45I can can, but this is the wagon.
- 12:46This is the wagon.
- 12:48What about the Callaway?
- 12:49It's the wagon.
- 12:50So you don't want, you don't wanna drive an upside down
- 12:52bathtub, is what you're saying.
- 12:56Dax, Dax Shepherd has one of these prob. The, the, the problem was that, I think
- 13:00the problem is, is that the SS was really cool for grown ass adults in the nineties.
- 13:05I wasn't a grown ass adult.
- 13:06So I'm thinking of something that I thought of as cool in my more informative
- 13:11years of which absolutely the WS six.
- 13:14Well, if we're, if we're still talking GM then, you know, we, we were actually
- 13:17debating this internally and it was like C four Corvette or C five Corvette.
- 13:22I'm like, well, the C four Corvette, the only one in the nineties is any
- 13:24good as a ZR one, and it's still a C four Corvette at that point.
- 13:27So what about the C five Vet Z six as an example?
- 13:31Z six didn't come out until 2001.
- 13:33I mean, I could, if he's talking about his nineties cars Yeah, yeah.
- 13:36Early two thousands.
- 13:38So the, I, so I wonder if the C five is maybe the inverse of my prior rule.
- 13:43So my prior rule being like, you could take a mature car that, you know,
- 13:47stretched into the naughties, but if you had, I think of the C five as a Naughty's
- 13:51car that came out a couple early.
- 13:53Right.
- 13:54And so, you know, not as much, do you have enough chest hair to drive a Corvette?
- 13:59Yes.
- 13:59I'm, I am I, and New Balance, I. If I didn't shave, I would have hair
- 14:04from like here down to my ankles.
- 14:07So it's totally fine.
- 14:08Um, the, um, the, my, so I will say it 'cause as, since we're on
- 14:13American cars, I have two problems, which I'm gonna have to figure out
- 14:16how to get over if I'm gonna do it.
- 14:18One is a solid axle and two are the interiors suck.
- 14:23And like particularly, you know, like a, a C four, even a C five Corvette.
- 14:27Like, I look at the inside of them and I want to throw up.
- 14:29And the funny thing is, is like I, you know, I'm not, I don't mean to
- 14:32be German bias, I love American cars, but like, you can look at an 85.
- 14:363 25 BMW, and it's a nice, clean, minimalist interior that is
- 14:41totally damn reasonable today.
- 14:42Like you can look at it 40 years later, it's totally fine.
- 14:45And you look at like a, what Americans are doing in the eighties, and they
- 14:47have these crazy LCDs, like it all looks like night rider animations and giant
- 14:53blo buttons and like some kinda weird sci-fi fighter cockpit interpretation.
- 15:00I struggle with it a bit.
- 15:00I I'm gonna be totally honest.
- 15:02I, I really, and the worst, worst stepdad had a c4 and yeah, that giant
- 15:06green bar that went up and across the dashboard, they were cheap plastic.
- 15:10The thin, thin little crowd, cheap plastic, the buttons, uh,
- 15:15that's, well, even the C five, you think you're in a trailblazer.
- 15:18You're like, what the hell is this?
- 15:20No offense to the Corvette owners, I'm just saying it's not the best
- 15:22until the c sixes and sevens, when they got their act together.
- 15:25I mean, it was not the best of interiors, but Mount Mandan, you had a comment.
- 15:29Chimed in saying that basically they were made with such cheap plastic that
- 15:32if you find something where something inside's not broken, that's a diamond
- 15:36in the rough 'cause, whether it be the mounting spot for the switches
- 15:40or something, they always broke.
- 15:42But one thing I was gonna ask is if we're going pour sports stuff and something that
- 15:45was quick, I'm gonna throw this out there.
- 15:47It's not a car.
- 15:48I knew it.
- 15:49I knew it.
- 15:49I knew it.
- 15:50What about like the typhoon or the cyclone?
- 15:52The typhoon.
- 15:53You could still throw the rack.
- 15:55Ooh, ooh.
- 15:55I love those ideas.
- 15:56I love those ideas.
- 15:58So they were fastest, could be up until recently for trucks from the factory.
- 16:02Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:02I mean they, they did a four and a half seconds, zero to 60 on the GMC cyclone
- 16:07and that thing, that record lasted until like, like the last Raptor or something.
- 16:12I mean, it was crazy.
- 16:13So, yeah, I, I love the cyclone idea.
- 16:15I think that's a ton of fun.
- 16:16I believe that had the Grand National motor in it.
- 16:193.8 Turbo.
- 16:21Yeah, the 3.8 Turbo, the intercooler.
- 16:23So I, I love, I love the grand, I love the Grand National.
- 16:26Uh, I love that motor.
- 16:27I realizing the Grand National is a little eighties, but that's a great way to
- 16:31bring that power plant into the nineties.
- 16:33So, yeah, no, I love the Grand National was a 3.8 and the cyclone,
- 16:37uh, and the typhoon wore 4.3.
- 16:39I thought they were three eights.
- 16:41They were the same motor.
- 16:42Did they just, you like bore or stroke the motor?
- 16:44Was it a different power plant?
- 16:46The 4.3, the easiest way to explaining it is a three 50 missing two cylinders.
- 16:49Ah, okay.
- 16:51And everything is just six instead of eight cylinders.
- 16:53And even like front components and everything bolt up the same.
- 16:55One of the four, three off of the three 50 I I see Mike is fact checking.
- 16:59Oh, we're Googling Mike's always fact checking this right now.
- 17:02We're Googling.
- 17:02It's the four three.
- 17:03He is right.
- 17:04Oh wow.
- 17:05Okay.
- 17:05Because Dan, of course, he's right.
- 17:07What about a GM can't, you can't argue with a mountain man.
- 17:10I gotta finish this Chevy conversation and just get us off
- 17:13that train before we go down a road.
- 17:15We don't ever, we can't ever get back from, it's true.
- 17:17To become a Chevy episode, I'm gonna go with the 3000 gt.
- 17:21I like that.
- 17:22It's my personal favorite.
- 17:23Everybody says the super or the RX seven, which, yes, they're on my list
- 17:27as well, but the first time I ever saw a 3000 GT in a parking lot, I was like,
- 17:31oh my God, that is a beautiful Ferrari.
- 17:34I had no idea.
- 17:34I was like 12 years old or whatever.
- 17:36I don't fucking know.
- 17:37Save yourself some money, get a stealth.
- 17:39It was, I was thinking the same thing.
- 17:40It was just beautiful.
- 17:41It's just a good looking car.
- 17:43All wheel drive.
- 17:44You can get the VR four, you can turbo the hell out of em.
- 17:47I love this idea as a kid, you read the car magazines, which I read religiously.
- 17:52My parents couldn't get me to read a religious text, but I would read Car
- 17:55and Driver and MotorTrend every month that it came to my house and they would
- 17:59always do the big three comparison, right?
- 18:01The 300 zx, which is another car that was a nineties car but came
- 18:04out in 89 or whatever, right?
- 18:06A little before its time.
- 18:07It's huge.
- 18:08Right?
- 18:08But they'd like a 300 Z zx, A mark four, 3000 GTVR four twin, you know,
- 18:13turbos and everything, and RX seven.
- 18:15And they do the comparison.
- 18:16And I always wanted the VR four to win.
- 18:19'cause I thought it was the coolest looking car of the group by a mile.
- 18:22And it always got its ass kicked.
- 18:23It was always the fastest in grand charisma though, the GTO
- 18:29and oh my.
- 18:30But it, it will like always lose 'cause it was so fat.
- 18:34The car weighed like 800 pounds more than all of its competitors.
- 18:37But it's supposed to be a great GT car is supposed to drive really well.
- 18:40It's supposed to be a great driver's car.
- 18:42I, I definitely like that idea.
- 18:44I wonder if the Dodge stealth is a little bit of a, uh, of a sleeper choice
- 18:48from our perspective of, you know, kind of not what people are expecting.
- 18:52I don't think it's as pretty particularly the late model VR fours.
- 18:55Right.
- 18:55So that's a late one you show.
- 18:57Yeah, and you know, 'cause they went away from the popup headlights
- 18:59I think in 98, if I remember.
- 19:01Obviously not.
- 19:02Yeah.
- 19:02This is in 98.
- 19:03Not a stock inter 4 97, not a stock inter cooler on that, but yeah,
- 19:07no, I mean, yeah, I love them.
- 19:09The only thing that worried me about the VR fours is if you've ever seen
- 19:12one under the hood, it's transverse.
- 19:14That's the disadvantage I thought it always had against the 300
- 19:17ZX or the Supra or whatever.
- 19:19Those being a classic, you know, front mount rear drive layout.
- 19:24The VR four was just like, ah, okay.
- 19:26So, so you wonder if in post life, in, in modification if
- 19:31you could help it get past that.
- 19:33Like, 'cause you're right, it's a front wheel bias all wheel drive system.
- 19:36Because of that, it's also got a lot of weight up front.
- 19:38So the weight distribution isn't great, isn't it?
- 19:40Like if you change the, the gear ratio a little bit between the front
- 19:43and the back, like that's what they did with like, the focus rs where
- 19:46it was just like, like a, you know, a few percent faster in the back.
- 19:50It puts a lot of pressure on the clutch in the middle, but it
- 19:52causes the power to go to the rear.
- 19:55Right?
- 19:55Uh, and, and, and you can kind of fix that bias in the, in the
- 19:59all wheel drive system that way.
- 20:00But like, again.
- 20:02Because nobody's really gotten into these cars yet.
- 20:04We're just starting to get into this trend of 40 year olds having money and deciding
- 20:08they're gonna dump it into this pit of car modification and whatever, restoration.
- 20:14I don't think people have really figured that out yet.
- 20:16Like you don't see any great, well-documented path.
- 20:18Uh, the only problem I have with the Japanese cars in this era
- 20:22is that we've already listed 80% of the good ones, right?
- 20:25Because if you, if you look, I mean, outside of the RX seven and all the ones
- 20:29that we've already mentioned, there's a couple Sylvia's, there's some other
- 20:32cars that we didn't get and things like that, that were Japanese only, but there
- 20:35wasn't a whole lot of JDM offerings in the US that were really that awesome.
- 20:40Oh God.
- 20:40Brad just put one up the prelude.
- 20:43Oh, just for Brian?
- 20:44Just for Brian Sha who's listening.
- 20:47Yeah.
- 20:47Because he's listening to, he's listening to this screaming, what about the prelude?
- 20:50And I'm like, there you go.
- 20:53But I don't know how how much prelude, I don't know how much
- 20:55hoon you can do with that.
- 20:56Of less, you can't Front wheel drive, you got, it's like 170 horsepower or
- 21:00200 in the sh Yeah, the sh I remember at the time that they made such
- 21:05a deal like that has a laser that measures the suspension and adjusts.
- 21:09Ridiculous.
- 21:09Was that the one with the four wheel steering or was it
- 21:11the Mitsubishi that had that?
- 21:12Yep.
- 21:12Four wheel steering.
- 21:13Four wheel passive steering was, did they have the four wheel
- 21:15steering in that generation?
- 21:16I know they did in the, in the generation prior.
- 21:19I can't, yeah.
- 21:19I believe it was in this generation as well.
- 21:21Type R Integra, like if you're throwing this up there.
- 21:24Yeah.
- 21:24Like that's, that's a 2000, 2001 car, but that's like the pinnacle of nineties.
- 21:29You can't get too much power out of those though.
- 21:32Or the civics, the civic type bars from that time.
- 21:34That's just the money problem.
- 21:36Yeah.
- 21:36Too much power.
- 21:37You just gotta build the shit out of the motor.
- 21:39Well, and this all the skylines, right?
- 21:40And the R 30 twos and 30 threes.
- 21:43I've been talking to some people, the 30 threes are becoming really popular
- 21:45because they were unwanted to begin with.
- 21:48The joke I heard was the R 32 skyline is the one you took to the track.
- 21:53The R 34 is the one you took to the shows and the drag races and the R
- 21:5733 was the one you bought your wife.
- 21:58But when I look at the R 33, it's kind of indicative of the
- 22:02nineties design in general.
- 22:03Just kind of this Mobius marshmallow on wheels, like they're all kind
- 22:06of look the same after a while.
- 22:08But the one car it brings to my attention and I thought of, and it's
- 22:11on my list and it's kind of the same car, but in, in two different trims.
- 22:15The Toyota Soer, which is also the Lexus SC 400.
- 22:20All right.
- 22:20Right.
- 22:21So you can hone the hell out of that thing because it's basically a
- 22:24two JayZ, just like a Supra, right?
- 22:26So you go nuts.
- 22:26What?
- 22:27Well, the s SC 300 is, and then you do a two JayZ swap.
- 22:29The SC 400 was the V eight.
- 22:30It's V eight.
- 22:31Yeah, that's right.
- 22:32Yeah.
- 22:32But you get so, so yeah, I think, I think the Lexus SC is a
- 22:35great option to to think about.
- 22:37Right?
- 22:37That could be a lot of fun.
- 22:38And they had a manual that you could get with them.
- 22:40That would absolutely be really interesting.
- 22:42I think.
- 22:43And you're not paying the super tax either, right?
- 22:45You can have the same car, slightly larger, put your kids in it.
- 22:49It's a bit of a sleeper if you think about it in comparison.
- 22:51You can make 900 horsepower outta that two JayZ pretty easily.
- 22:55There's a flip side to the Supertax though, which is like the supertax is
- 22:58the, the super is is really the only one that is like really, I think.
- 23:02Really completely mature in regards to like, they've absolutely figured out
- 23:06every corner of that car, you can get reliably a ton of horsepower out of it.
- 23:11You know, it's gonna fail when you know how to make it work.
- 23:14There are no rabbit holes left or quests to, you know, don Kioti
- 23:18type things to try and figure out.
- 23:20I mean, don't get me wrong, like, I've definitely been looking on eBay
- 23:23or, or auto trade or whatever, and be like, I could just buy this guy's
- 23:27$150,000 car for 80 grand and you know, that would be pretty cool.
- 23:32And, and, but then that's somebody else's build.
- 23:34I mean, exactly right.
- 23:36But like, you know, you're, you're getting it for 50 cents on the dollar
- 23:39and yeah, you go in and you fix whatever you gotta fix to get it sorted out.
- 23:42It's not gonna be perfect when you get it by any means.
- 23:44You'll certainly save a lot of money going into it that way.
- 23:47Buy somebody else's money pit and then get it sorted.
- 23:49So what is the goal, intent for the vehicle?
- 23:52Is it gonna be something you street, something you track?
- 23:54Great, great question.
- 23:56I don't see it being a racetrack.
- 23:59So maybe, maybe quarter mile not to see that I'm like trying to, you know,
- 24:03make a nine second car or something.
- 24:06But like, I think, I think it might be fun to take out the quarter mile, but yeah,
- 24:10no, I mean, mainly street drive around, have fun cars and coffee type deal.
- 24:13Take, take, take the kids somewhere, go to cars and coffee, remind them
- 24:17what cars used to be like my kids.
- 24:18I mean, not cars and coffee.
- 24:20They know.
- 24:21Um, and, uh, and, and, and have, just have some fun.
- 24:26Hooligan is, I believe the word I picked at the beginning.
- 24:29That's true.
- 24:29I'm gonna throw it out there.
- 24:31Unfortunately, it wouldn't be good for carrying the kids around.
- 24:32But a two 40 sx, there's a ton you can do with those.
- 24:36I loved those and the, and the little infinity variant of that, I forget what
- 24:40they called it, a G 20 or something maybe.
- 24:42Yeah, that two 40 and the Infinity version absolutely would be a,
- 24:45well the problem is for a hundred grand he can buy about 37 of those.
- 24:49'cause there ain't worth the damn so, but they're all missing their
- 24:53front bumpers 'cause they fell off at the drift circuit a hundred percent.
- 24:56Right.
- 24:58Those are the ones they slow.
- 24:59They put the solid axles in.
- 25:02Yeah, exactly.
- 25:03And it's a 4, 3 0 2 under the hood, the two 40.
- 25:07The problem is they're so expensive 'cause the guys drifting them.
- 25:09They've all totaled them and wrecked 'em and destroyed them.
- 25:12But if you do wind up with a two 40, I just happened to have a body kit.
- 25:16That's fun.
- 25:18He said rolling his eyes.
- 25:23So going back to a, uh, good old American car that fully fits the criteria.
- 25:28It's, it's at least not the, the, the earliest in 95.
- 25:32So the 1999 Ford Mustang Cobra, which was the first year of
- 25:36the more squared off design.
- 25:38So that's a SN 95.
- 25:40Right.
- 25:40But then there's also, it's an SN 95 with the new body.
- 25:42There's also the 93 Cobra SVT, which is the last of the fox body.
- 25:46So you kind of have it on both ends of the nineties, right.
- 25:49Depending on what you're into.
- 25:50But even if you buy a fox body, I think you're in the same camp that, like Bobby
- 25:54Parks is in, you throw the 3 0 2 in the trash and you put an LS in it and
- 25:57build like a 1200 horsepower monster.
- 26:00Well, but at least that one, the, the Cobra specifically
- 26:02comes with the independent rear.
- 26:03That's true.
- 26:04No, you're, you're, you're, you're absolutely right.
- 26:06That's a, that is a great car.
- 26:08I think it looks really cool.
- 26:10I think that's a great option.
- 26:11I do like that it has independent rear suspension and, and
- 26:14that it's, it's gotten it.
- 26:15It's funny how they went away from that later, right?
- 26:18In the later, uh, GT five hundreds, they, they put the solid axle back in.
- 26:21It's a good move by Ford, in my opinion.
- 26:23Racer.
- 26:23Ron's on the panel.
- 26:24Do we want get some input from him?
- 26:26So, um, I think you guys have a lot of really great ideas.
- 26:29You're throwing a lot of good stuff out there.
- 26:31The situation is balanced between how nice a machine you can get up front.
- 26:36It's not low wrecked.
- 26:37Like a, a two 40 is gonna be trash period.
- 26:40I mean, they just, and a lot of this stuff you get from Japan is trash too, right?
- 26:44It just is.
- 26:45They're all used up.
- 26:46So that's totally outta the picture.
- 26:47But think with American iron is not a bad way to go from a lot of perspectives.
- 26:51You know, the least of them being, you can usually find
- 26:54someone to actually work on it.
- 26:55That's without spending a hell of a lot of money because the
- 26:58RAs, that's a specialty guy.
- 27:00You know, BMW guys are never real cheap, but.
- 27:03Doesn't sound like you're really gonna go the BMW direction.
- 27:06So I, I would definitely, well underestimate thinking about America.
- 27:08I mean, I would definitely be thinking strong about American Iron.
- 27:12I like the GT 3000.
- 27:13I think it's a good car.
- 27:14I think the, the W Series are also good cars.
- 27:17They're complicated though, and they're not cheap to work on either.
- 27:20Absolutely.
- 27:21So, um, yeah, it's a tough call.
- 27:23You can do real well for.
- 27:26The Cobra.
- 27:26I mean, there's no, there's no two ways about it.
- 27:28You save yourself some money for another toy, you just buy a couple of them.
- 27:32Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 27:32For sure.
- 27:33Yeah.
- 27:33The Isuzu V Cross is one that you should totally do negative.
- 27:39Oh, wait, no, the the one, the other one I brought up in chat is the Monte
- 27:42Carlo SS Tasmanian Devil Edition.
- 27:45Oh God.
- 27:46Oh God.
- 27:46Hey, what the hell They, they made that, is that like the Bugs Bunny
- 27:50Venture van thing that they did?
- 27:52Yes.
- 27:52Oh, it was, why don't you just tell me to get the Dale Earnhardt edition?
- 27:57Well, so more of the Dale Earnhardt ones, they had the Intimidator and
- 28:02then they had the Dale Junior Edition.
- 28:03And then the head, the Tasmanian Devil Edition.
- 28:05Okay.
- 28:05We've talked about Americans, we talked about Japanese.
- 28:08You alluded to some Italians there at the beginning.
- 28:10Let's talk about the Italians for a second.
- 28:12Fiat,
- 28:15yeah.
- 28:15The, yeah, for sure.
- 28:17A hundred percent.
- 28:17That's, that's a winner.
- 28:19You know, FF 3 55.
- 28:22I mean, as good looking and evolution of the three series as they are, they
- 28:27have a horror story, you know, nightmare reputation behind them for reliability.
- 28:31But there's a couple other Italians behind that same era that I think are
- 28:36better, maybe as a sleeper if you're thinking about going in that direction.
- 28:40What about the Maserati 3,200 GT precursor to the coupe?
- 28:44Is that the evolution of the buy turbo?
- 28:46Was it like the same chassis and setup or negative?
- 28:49So it's, it's the swoopy one that kind of looks like an astin or
- 28:52a jag, which later become coupe.
- 28:54And then like the current body style that it's now, it's like
- 28:57the beginning of that lineage.
- 28:59So they sold 27 of them in the United States?
- 29:02I, I think so, yes.
- 29:02Yeah.
- 29:03Um, speaking of finding somebody to work on, no.
- 29:07I mean, actually I don't know anything about that car.
- 29:09It wasn't on my radar, so it sounds really interesting.
- 29:11I like the idea of, of learning about that.
- 29:14I really don't know much about it, you know, which is, I don't have too many
- 29:17gaps, but that's definitely one of them.
- 29:19I also don't know any shit about French cars from the nineties either.
- 29:22Don't bother.
- 29:23It's not worth it.
- 29:25I was gonna say, just pack a lot of wine and cheese for when you're broken down on
- 29:27the side of the road if you buy French.
- 29:29Yes.
- 29:29So Brad has a picture of it.
- 29:30Wait, he, wait.
- 29:31It's that.
- 29:32Because they made that car up until like 2008.
- 29:35I know.
- 29:35'cause I lived in San Diego.
- 29:36It got re everyone drove one, it got renamed to the coupe.
- 29:40And so originally it was the 3,200 gt.
- 29:43Ah.
- 29:43And so that's, that's what it's, it's the precursor to those, you know, what we
- 29:46know now to be kind of the current, you know, lineage of Maseratis, but there's
- 29:51so, so, so that was like the, so that was like the early grand there mode of today.
- 29:54Correct.
- 29:55Yeah.
- 29:55Those things were so popular in San Diego.
- 29:57You could pick that car up like four or five years old with
- 30:0125,000 miles on it for 20 grand.
- 30:03Exactly.
- 30:03It's a bargain really.
- 30:05I mean, and it's a Ferrari power plant and all the fun
- 30:07stuff that goes along with that.
- 30:08But it's not a Ferrari.
- 30:09Right.
- 30:10So.
- 30:10Yeah, I don't, yeah, we're gonna put air quotes around it.
- 30:12I don't know.
- 30:13The one, I don't know.
- 30:14I mean, did they make a manual with it?
- 30:16Because later they didn't and they only had a single clutch.
- 30:19Correct.
- 30:19Automated, you know, pseudo manual.
- 30:21And that clutch was seven grand to replace and it went out about every 6,000 miles.
- 30:26And I know because my boss had one.
- 30:28And does that, that fun?
- 30:29Does that fun stuff at the Ferrari engine include removing the engine
- 30:33from the car every like 5,000 miles to completely rebuild it?
- 30:36No, no.
- 30:36The fun stuff is open pipes, so you could really hear it sing.
- 30:39That's what I was doing.
- 30:40Yeah.
- 30:40No, I mean, don't me wrong, the sound was great.
- 30:42So my boss had had one of those, although it was like a 2008 or
- 30:45whatever, but the sound was great.
- 30:47The intake noise was a ton of fun.
- 30:48Like I, I love, like you could hit the gas and you just hurt.
- 30:51It sounded like an angry dragon was sucking in air and it was really cool.
- 30:56So the, the engine was great.
- 30:58It's fat, it is a, it is a big, it is bigger than it looks.
- 31:01Yes.
- 31:02Like a lot of cars are the other way around.
- 31:03That thing is bigger than it looks and it weighs like 4,200 pounds.
- 31:07Speaking of bigger than it looks.
- 31:08And also coming from Italy.
- 31:10How about the five 50 Martinello?
- 31:12You can't get those for a hundred grand anymore.
- 31:14I would love to get one and, and, and, and if I was smart, I would instead of buying.
- 31:18This would've bought a five 50 Marella for a hundred grand.
- 31:21It'd be worth 200 grand a day.
- 31:22You cannot find a good five 50 for a hundred grand anymore.
- 31:25If we can please point me in the direction.
- 31:27Yeah.
- 31:28Right.
- 31:28But the five fiftys were cool 'cause they were manual only, which I
- 31:31actually think is why the, the values have gone out so much as opposed to
- 31:35like a 4, 5, 6 or something else.
- 31:363 55 or whatever.
- 31:38Yeah.
- 31:38The five 50 was only that six B gated and the, the valuations have literally
- 31:43doubled in like the last four years.
- 31:44It's crazy.
- 31:45I seen, what is that, an RSS six A nineties RS six.
- 31:48It's a by turbo.
- 31:49S four B five.
- 31:49S four Oh, okay.
- 31:51By Turbo.
- 31:52Yeah.
- 31:52We didn't get a ton of power out of 'em.
- 31:53Not very reliable, but they're fun to look at.
- 31:56Audi, Audi was still in the doghouse in the nineties, so it was a huge gap for me.
- 32:01I only knew one person who, whose family had an Audi and they, they
- 32:06weren't in the car magazines.
- 32:08They like, they were just, you know, you'd read about, you'd read about AMGs,
- 32:12you'd read about Mcar, but like Audi just didn't exist until the naughties.
- 32:16It was like it just disappeared and then came back.
- 32:18When I was in high school, I knew one person who had an Audi and his entire
- 32:21family had about 50 of them, and he's in that other screen up there.
- 32:26That is true.
- 32:27We've had way too many, we, we lived through the nineties Audis, man.
- 32:31But you know, speaking of, since we're talking about Audis right now, it makes
- 32:35sense to bring up the S eight from Ronan.
- 32:37That's a late nineties car and it's also a sleeper.
- 32:40You know, we're talking.
- 32:40Well, that's a great idea.
- 32:42I love you guys.
- 32:43That suggestion made this whole thing worth it.
- 32:46I love that idea.
- 32:47I'm not saying I'm gonna do it definitively, but like I wasn't
- 32:49even thinking about dinner.
- 32:51Curry.
- 32:51I love Ronan.
- 32:53I mean, you know, all his cool, uh, double clutching was in
- 32:55a EO, I think, but whatever.
- 32:57Yeah, great idea.
- 32:58Love it.
- 32:59Put some, yeah.
- 33:00In those cars back then you're talking somewhere, you know, south of 400
- 33:04horsepower, but it's easy to untap the four two and get more power out of it.
- 33:08Well, well hang really quick as we're, as we're going down this
- 33:11path with the, with the Audis.
- 33:12What, what about some engine swaps?
- 33:15I, I, it's kind of kicking around some ideas, right?
- 33:17Like, what if I put the E 39 M five motor, which I, pardon
- 33:21me, I forget the designation.
- 33:22S 62 or something.
- 33:23I don't remember the E 39 M five motor, but like, put that in an E 40.
- 33:28I think there might be an opportunity to create, 'cause I do want
- 33:31something that's kind of unique.
- 33:32I think there might be some fun ideas around around doing something like that.
- 33:36I'm wondering if you guys have any, that's Pandora's box.
- 33:39Crazy, crazy thoughts on thematically appropriate engine swaps.
- 33:42Right.
- 33:43So like one of the coolest cars I think I've ever seen is an original two 40 Z,
- 33:46like a 1971 or two or whatever that had a skyline, but like a, mm-hmm like an R 33.
- 33:52In line six dropped in it, right?
- 33:54And it was like, here it is kind of, you know, four generations later of that
- 33:58motor of the original inline six in there.
- 34:00Obviously not for a nineties car, but like what, what do we think might be a, a
- 34:04thematically cool engine swap type idea.
- 34:07It's probably not a popular opinion.
- 34:09A lot of people call it a hairdresser's car, but I actually like the eight series.
- 34:12It was on my list as well as one of my top, the three suggestions.
- 34:15I definitely liked the eight series I I was, I was so disappointed as a kid
- 34:19that, how slow they were, because they looked so fast, they looked badass.
- 34:23I mean they looked so cool and then they were like not actually fast.
- 34:26Even the V 12 was just kinda like, why did you put a V 12 in
- 34:29it if that's all it's gonna do.
- 34:30And there's three different motor packages for the V 12.
- 34:33There's like a five oh, a five four and a five six or something like that.
- 34:36So if you're gonna get one, you get the later one because at least they figured it
- 34:39out and you get slightly more horsepower.
- 34:41So, so be it.
- 34:42The biggest problem that the uh, V twelves ran into was the early V twelves
- 34:46were nothing but two six cylinders.
- 34:49The failure points were enormous.
- 34:50Like the throttle bodies were $1,500 a piece.
- 34:54Oh.
- 34:54And they failed in pairs.
- 34:55They failed in pairs, which apparently was bad.
- 34:59You know, the, the one thing you hadn't mentioned, you're talking about Audis
- 35:02and you know, the A a A and the A A L were neat cars, but I had probably the
- 35:08more advanced version of that because of the time period and the technology.
- 35:13Which was the original Audi V eight.
- 35:15They were, from a technology standpoint, amazing.
- 35:18But you know, they also used probably some of the worst technology ever available.
- 35:25Well, let's make a V eight by taking two 16 valves and putting 'em together.
- 35:28Right.
- 35:28I mean, it's a kind of, that's what they were doing back then.
- 35:30'cause I don't know why.
- 35:32That's what Ford did to Aston Martin.
- 35:33Right, exactly.
- 35:34As soon as they bought 'em, they're like, here, take this
- 35:35Ford Taurus and times it by two.
- 35:38If we're still talking about the Audis, I mean like to Brad's point, I
- 35:40mean we grew up at one point I think we had three Coop Quatros, right?
- 35:45But that was the beginning of the nineties.
- 35:47So that was the beginning of the round period, right?
- 35:49Where it's like, okay, here's a marshmallow and, and four wheels.
- 35:53So those early Audis kind of all look the same.
- 35:55You know, the 90 Cs sport, the, the Quatro, all that kind of stuff.
- 35:58Even the 100, they weren't anything to write home about.
- 36:01But it's not until you got to the B five S four or to the S eight where it kind
- 36:05of, they started to change their mind and started to go in an aggressive direction.
- 36:09And then, you know, Audi now is, is 180 out from there again.
- 36:12So I think there's some cool stuff there.
- 36:14It's just a matter of digging deeper and seeing what you can do.
- 36:17So to Eric's point, I've got your car for you right now.
- 36:20Alright, let's do it.
- 36:21It's an Audi coop.
- 36:22Quattro.
- 36:23It's in Eric's garage right now.
- 36:25It's got a motor swap.
- 36:27It's already done.
- 36:28It's true.
- 36:28It just needs some TLC.
- 36:30He'll sell you to you for a hundred grand right now.
- 36:34It's true.
- 36:35It is an S eight motor in there, so it's 400 horse and it was featured
- 36:39in European car for anybody that's listening many, many years ago, so.
- 36:42Wow.
- 36:42So it's a famous car too.
- 36:43Look at that.
- 36:44That's true.
- 36:44Original one-off, original six speed manual.
- 36:47Does it?
- 36:47Does it cut?
- 36:48Do you have original?
- 36:48You have the, do you have the magazine article like Uh, yeah, you have.
- 36:52There you go.
- 36:53Yep.
- 36:53Well, that was the only one that ran in the country, if I recall.
- 36:56That's true.
- 36:56And then we did a Ur Quatro with a three six swap from the car that Matt was
- 37:00talking about, the original VA Quatro.
- 37:02So we had two kind of unicorns at the time, but that other
- 37:05car is no longer available, but he's still got the one for sale.
- 37:07A hundred grand.
- 37:09Yeah.
- 37:09I'll take offers a hundred percent.
- 37:11I have dollars.
- 37:12But you know, since we talked about Audi and you know, we, we've, we've touched
- 37:15on some cars that might be unreliable.
- 37:17Let's talk about British cars for a minute.
- 37:19And Brad flashed up the esprit.
- 37:22So what do you think about that?
- 37:23I loved those cars when I was a kid.
- 37:25I, there, I think getting a lot of power out of 'em was the problem.
- 37:28It was nothing cooler.
- 37:29Was that V eight any good?
- 37:31I know it was like a 3.5 liter twin turbo.
- 37:33V eight.
- 37:34No, the transmission was the best part of that car.
- 37:36You're gonna swap it.
- 37:37Wasn't the transmission in French?
- 37:38No, it was out of a mano.
- 37:40Apparently the mano gets a bad rap.
- 37:43It really wasn't a bad car.
- 37:45They loved the mon and old top gear.
- 37:47They, they talked about the mon.
- 37:48They talked about the mon, like it was the greatest family car you could ever buy.
- 37:52Oh, it was everywhere in Germany too, because you did a billion
- 37:54things to it and we called it the Jaguar X type in this country.
- 37:59Yes.
- 38:00Yeah.
- 38:01Or the SVT contour, which the SVD contour was a, was a surprisingly nice car.
- 38:07In fact, I have a friend who has one that's 200,000 miles on it.
- 38:09Original clutch.
- 38:10And they were neat cars.
- 38:12I mean, they were small cars too.
- 38:14But you know, remember that this is in a time period when a big
- 38:17car was what, a five series?
- 38:19Yeah.
- 38:20And what's five series size today?
- 38:21It's like a, it's like a three.
- 38:23You're, that, that I always said about my F 82 or 85 M three that I bought, the 2015
- 38:29M three that I bought, it was the E 39.
- 38:31I always wanted, that generation of three series is bigger than that nineties, five
- 38:36series, you know, and, and it was like, this is, this is the M five that I want.
- 38:40Of course the M five now is a boat.
- 38:43Oh, I so, and so I'm just buying the M three.
- 38:45But since we're talking about engine swaps, the Brits are pretty
- 38:49famous for jamming weird motors in kind of just normal cars.
- 38:53And that's why I wanted to bring up and talk about the Brits,
- 38:55because the answer here in America.
- 38:57Is LS swap the world.
- 38:58We already know that.
- 38:59So there's no other swap to do over there.
- 39:00It's the Land Rover V eight and and all the things, but I came across
- 39:05two cars and the And the Land Rover.
- 39:07No.
- 39:07Tell us.
- 39:07Tell us, what about the Land Rover?
- 39:09The Land Rover V eight sucks.
- 39:12There's nothing to write home about because it's nothing but the three nine
- 39:17redone and the later ones the four fours and the four sixes are BM BMW motors,
- 39:20which is fine, but they're BM BMW motors.
- 39:23Yeah, I think that's, I think they use, I think they use them over there simply
- 39:26because that's what they have available.
- 39:28That's very true.
- 39:29So speaking of cars that have BM BMW motors swapped into them from
- 39:32the factory, and this is why I wanted to bring up British cars.
- 39:35What about the Bentley Arage, which came with a 4.4 liter turbocharge BMW engine,
- 39:42or the optional six and three quarter liter turbo and that's another sleeper?
- 39:47I'm not sure I have the patience.
- 39:49To own one of those cars in the sense that it's gonna spend at least six
- 39:52months out of the year in the shop.
- 39:54You know?
- 39:54And then looking at the gap of my garage more, more days than it's filled
- 39:59would be difficult because you're gonna be waiting for parts forever.
- 40:04So the other one I came up on the Brit list, and they are
- 40:07famous for, this is Jaguar.
- 40:10Are we talking J?
- 40:11We are talking jets.
- 40:14JI drive a J and it's the XJR with the supercharged four liter, it
- 40:19makes 370 horsepower, zero to 60 and 5.6 seconds, and electronically
- 40:23limited to 155 miles an hour.
- 40:25I think that car's kind of cool because it's understated.
- 40:29It's a jag.
- 40:29You're like, ah, it's a jag like anything else.
- 40:31But it's gonna put you in your place from traffic light to traffic light.
- 40:34Yeah, I think the, the XJR is great.
- 40:37The, the old X Ks, I mean, it still kind of looks like an eighties car, but man.
- 40:42You look at that.
- 40:43That's, that's such, I I still think it's such a cool looking car
- 40:46and I don't know when they came out with a more modern looking xk.
- 40:48That might have been like 99 or something.
- 40:51No, I mean, I think Jags, they're so good looking and in the nineties
- 40:54I think you still get some of that authentic British, uh, cigar library
- 40:58type feel to it, whereas like by the two thousands that that's turned into
- 41:02some cartoonish caricature of itself.
- 41:05The, the XJ was a sleeper too, because like the M five, you really had to
- 41:10look at it to notice the differences.
- 41:12Exactly, and that's why I brought that car up.
- 41:14I think it's a fantastic option if you're looking for a sleeper that you
- 41:17can hone around in, no one will expect that Jag to be able to put that kind of
- 41:21power down and being supercharged, turn the wick up to 11 and see what happens.
- 41:25Right.
- 41:26Put some pulleys on it.
- 41:27Bigger intercoolers.
- 41:28See what you can do when, when you're speaking of like the cars from
- 41:31either England or Europe in general.
- 41:33The little thing that I was doing a while back.
- 41:35Is if you go into like eBay co uk, which is England's eBay, you go in there and
- 41:40look for the car you're interested in and then shipping it over here, even
- 41:43buying it their price and shipping it, you're still in it for less than
- 41:46half of what people here states.
- 41:48I would be selling the same car.
- 41:49So I've spent a lot of time in London for work.
- 41:52I have to spend a bunch of time at Canary Wharf and the um,
- 41:55the used car values are so low.
- 41:57It's crazy how cheap because they're so afraid of gasoline prices.
- 42:01So the crazy asshole buys it new 'cause they love the car and they
- 42:05don't care how much they're gonna pay for petrol and 80 billion pounds
- 42:10per English gallon or whatever.
- 42:12They don't care.
- 42:12But then used, it's worth nothing.
- 42:15Absolutely.
- 42:16So I had some coworkers that repa, you know, Patriot, ated
- 42:19over there, immigrated, I, we should just say immigration.
- 42:22I think that's, they're immigrants.
- 42:24The, but the point being is that they, uh, they're over there
- 42:27now and they love the cars.
- 42:29Like they're, they're buy, they, they're so excited about the crap
- 42:31they can buy and how cheap it is.
- 42:33You're absolutely right.
- 42:34That's a great, that's a great thought.
- 42:36Buying it and shipping it from there is still cheaper.
- 42:38Now you end up with a right hand drive car, particularly with now
- 42:41you're shifting stick left-handed.
- 42:43Certainly I'm ambidextrous.
- 42:44I don't know about you when it comes to shifting.
- 42:46Let's, that's kind like fat too.
- 42:50I'd like to bring up another car.
- 42:51Can we introduce another, another mark?
- 42:54Absolutely.
- 42:54Ron, go ahead, Panos.
- 42:56I have that on my list.
- 42:57The ante.
- 42:58Esper, man.
- 43:00I mean, out of the box hauls ass gorgeous car.
- 43:04And it's made with American Iron.
- 43:06It is a modular Ford under, under the hood.
- 43:08Yep.
- 43:09So, so I just wanted to bring it up because I, I love those cars.
- 43:11They're, they're just beautiful cars.
- 43:13Pull a picture up, Brad.
- 43:14I haven't, I don't think I've seen one of these, uh, Esper made, made in Georgia.
- 43:18You need to find one of Brett's disassembled.
- 43:20One.
- 43:23The nice thing about the five liter Ford is if you can't add power to a five
- 43:27liter Ford, you should really give up.
- 43:28Yeah, it's like, it's like a small black Chevy.
- 43:31I mean, that's a good looking car.
- 43:33We haven't talked about, we haven't talked about T That makes me think of the Tvrs.
- 43:37Yes, that was on my list.
- 43:38The Serra, the Ser, the Erra was, was so hot in video games.
- 43:44Even.
- 43:44Even some of you know what some of the eighties tvrs look like, nineties cars.
- 43:49They were always so far ahead of their time and being out there, uh, you know,
- 43:53fiberglass, crazy assholes that they were.
- 43:56I think tv, that's a really fun option.
- 43:58I've been thinking so much.
- 43:59I've been trolling JDM sites about like buying something in Japan.
- 44:03I'm importing it over and like I haven't even looking at the uk
- 44:06and that could be a lot of fun.
- 44:08And you can get skylines from the UK as well.
- 44:10And they're a lot cheaper than getting 'em from Japan.
- 44:12A lot of people don't realize that.
- 44:14So we don't mention Morgan.
- 44:17I mean, I mean they've looked the same since like 1920.
- 44:19Right.
- 44:20So I mean, can you So, so they, they make that, they, they made in
- 44:23the nineties they had that four.
- 44:24So of course they have the three wheeler.
- 44:26No thanks.
- 44:26But they made that, the arrow they made forever in the, they had
- 44:30that in the nineties and back then it was still wood frame, which
- 44:34assuming it hasn't been beaten out or something might be interesting.
- 44:37No, but they, they made an arrow, which was different because the Morgan
- 44:41like four four and four eight or whatever the hell they were, those
- 44:44were the classic look that arrow eight or whatever the hell it was.
- 44:48It was almost like a cartoon.
- 44:50When they redid the body, it was like a cartoon gangster car.
- 44:53Yeah, exactly.
- 44:54That's across from, from prohibition.
- 44:56Like if, if somebody from Prohibition smoked did some LSD or something and then
- 45:00we're like, yeah, we're gonna see this.
- 45:02Well, Brad just threw up a suggestion.
- 45:05What you got there, Brad show?
- 45:07I thought they didn't make this car.
- 45:08They didn't, did they make this car?
- 45:10I remember I've seen one in person at an autocross.
- 45:12Yeah, but they only made like five.
- 45:14I remember watching a documentary, I remember watching a show in the nineties
- 45:17where Shelby was doing donuts in that car.
- 45:19Probably that exact same car.
- 45:21He was still alive.
- 45:24Dirt.
- 45:24We had a guy here who had a, he owned a do it yourself garage and
- 45:29he had the Shelby one, two hundred and forty nine were built 249.
- 45:34That's more nice.
- 45:34That's a lot more than I thought.
- 45:35That's really cool.
- 45:36Yeah, it's, it was 80 K new, if I remember correctly, from my childhood.
- 45:40I've seen one in person though.
- 45:42They're slick.
- 45:43I mean, but it doesn't look too different than the Payos though.
- 45:46In all.
- 45:47In all.
- 45:47No, I think they were competitors here.
- 45:49Here's something we haven't thought about.
- 45:51You know what else blew up in the nineties in car culture Kit?
- 45:53Cars?
- 45:54Yes.
- 45:55COBRA Kit.
- 45:56Car.
- 45:56Like I've, I keep looking at COBRA kits.
- 45:58One of my coworkers has a great back draft with a BMW three series suspension in it.
- 46:04So it's independent rear multi league front, and you Ford
- 46:07racing crepe motor in it.
- 46:08Ah, man, I It's the back, but then you just, you're just taking a car that may
- 46:11have come out in the nineties, but it's based off a car from like the sixties.
- 46:15It is, but, but it's definitely a more, it, it is certainly an
- 46:19interpretation of it though.
- 46:20It, it is not that.
- 46:21That, that original car, but that was just such a craze.
- 46:25Right.
- 46:25And you remember, you remember walking around as a kid, you'd see
- 46:27these kit cars like everywhere.
- 46:29Like you don't see too many Cobra kits out on the road.
- 46:31Mm-hmm.
- 46:32I remember back then used to see 'em all the damn time.
- 46:34There's also the, the Ferrari kit cars that were built off.
- 46:37The Firo.
- 46:38The Osh off the Fiero.
- 46:41I think Dan's got one buried in his property somewhere.
- 46:44Oh my God.
- 46:45Not yet.
- 46:46Not yet.
- 46:46Oh my God.
- 46:47That's terrible.
- 46:48So since we're still sort of talking about British cars, there's one that
- 46:51we've probably forgotten about, which I happen to stumble across, which was
- 46:55the Aston DB seven, the first really modern looking gorgeous, correct?
- 47:00Correct.
- 47:00The the acid Martin Jaguar XJ.
- 47:03Yeah.
- 47:03Understated, underappreciated.
- 47:05Probably mostly forgotten at this point because of the DB nine and the
- 47:09DB nine s and all the successors.
- 47:11An affordable nineties car.
- 47:12If you're looking for something quasi exotic, if you can find, if
- 47:15you can find one with a manual in it.
- 47:16Wasn't that a, a supercharged six cylinder?
- 47:18I believe it was.
- 47:20I think the DB seven was the first time they put the four Taurus v
- 47:23sixes together and made the V 12.
- 47:25Oh, yeah.
- 47:26But I thought they had a straight six, DB seven.
- 47:28I think I'd have to go back and double check.
- 47:30But there's all these, there's always those packages and swap outs.
- 47:33The Brits that love doing that, like, oh, we created a body and
- 47:35let's jam another motor in it, you know, call it something else.
- 47:38I have a memory of them selling DB Sevens pretty well.
- 47:42In fact, I remember that being the first time I actually really saw
- 47:45people driving in Aston Martin.
- 47:46You'd have to go down to Potomac or somewhere where there were rich people,
- 47:50but like, no, certainly not in Frederick.
- 47:53That was the first quote unquote new.
- 47:55Aston Martin.
- 47:56And how long since?
- 47:57Since the nda?
- 47:58I think it was the war.
- 48:01Yeah.
- 48:01Well, yeah.
- 48:02Yeah.
- 48:03Well that was, that's always been the British philosophy.
- 48:06Why invent something new and you can continue to use what
- 48:08you've been doing for 50 years.
- 48:11Could put a Dodge Caravan up there.
- 48:12Huh?
- 48:13The ultimate nineties car.
- 48:15A brand new hell cat.
- 48:17Red Eye.
- 48:19Yes.
- 48:20'cause it is a 1998 Mercedes eClass Go.
- 48:24With a 900 horsepower V eight in it.
- 48:26It was everything a MG wanted to do in the nineties, but couldn't.
- 48:30Nineties car.
- 48:31Why did not talk about the Pontiac Sunfire?
- 48:33I just want to know.
- 48:34It reminds me of the Chevy Cavalier had, I would, I would love to get
- 48:37a Pontiac Sun, Pontiac Sunfire.
- 48:39I did have a 1989 Chevy Cavalier first car, but I would love to get one just
- 48:43to pour gasoline on it later on fire.
- 48:45And what will you do with the remaining $99,550 to spend?
- 48:51Yeah.
- 48:52Something else.
- 48:54Well, I'm gonna throw it out there.
- 48:56What is it?
- 48:56The, uh, Volvo C 70, I think it was.
- 48:59I like those from the Saints or the, the, so, the sobs you like.
- 49:03Yeah.
- 49:03You can't ignore Volvos and sobs.
- 49:05Yeah, you can.
- 49:09When did, when did, when did the eight 50 R come out?
- 49:11Was that 2000 or 2001?
- 49:13I don't know.
- 49:13I feel like it was kind of a No, the eight 50, well, the eight 50
- 49:16R maybe, but the eight 50 turbos, those were out in the nineties.
- 49:19Yeah, and they look exactly like that.
- 49:21Dodge Caravan.
- 49:22I had one, I had a, I had a 1995 H, 50 T five R.
- 49:27It was only for one year because the R were only the first and second year.
- 49:31Fantastic car.
- 49:32I loved it.
- 49:32Well that was probably the absolute first Volvo in like what, 30 years?
- 49:38It was not such, you know, the V 1800 was a cool car.
- 49:42Yeah, I agree.
- 49:42You know.
- 49:42Then what'd you end up with?
- 49:44Two 40 and the 2 42?
- 49:45You know, look, look at us.
- 49:47Drive boxes.
- 49:48They're safe and they're fast.
- 49:50Those are fast as as well, man.
- 49:52And you're talking about motor swaps is.
- 49:54Remember the car that Paul Newman drove?
- 49:56It was a seven 40 with a five liter Ford because it fits.
- 49:59Yeah, that's true.
- 50:00That was pretty cool.
- 50:01They drove that car on, uh, an episode of, uh, Seinfeld's Comedian's Cars and
- 50:06Coffee with, like, David Letterman has one as well that Paul Newman built for him.
- 50:10It's a, it's a cool sleeper.
- 50:11And if you go back to your engine swap thing, I think Matt's right on it.
- 50:14I mean, it's like a Volvo.
- 50:16Make it 400 horse with a Ford crate motor in it.
- 50:18That's kind of cool actually.
- 50:20Oh, Brad's onto something.
- 50:21I'm going in that direction.
- 50:23So let's talk about Germans get a hammer.
- 50:25That would be great.
- 50:26I could do a hammer tribute.
- 50:28That would be a lot of fun.
- 50:29Well, I was thinking Braas, pick yourself up a bras Mercedes because
- 50:33people have forgotten about those cars and that's a precursor to
- 50:36the AMGs that we're used to today.
- 50:38Absolutely.
- 50:39Well, I mean, I think by the nineties.
- 50:41A MG had definitely, Braas was the, the underdog by that
- 50:44point, A MG had really blown up.
- 50:46But no, I, I think the thing that's hard to appreciate though is they,
- 50:49they really, the, the volumes were so low, like on those, they're
- 50:53genuinely, it, genuinely hard to find.
- 50:55But I agree.
- 50:56I think that's a great idea.
- 50:57Problem.
- 50:58Of course, Mercedes never put a manual in anything.
- 51:01True, true.
- 51:02They, they did, but only in the one 90 E.
- 51:04Yeah.
- 51:04Or the diesels or something crazy.
- 51:07Hold on, but before we go there, so manual is a requirement.
- 51:10I won't say that it is a requirement.
- 51:12I'm pretty open, but it there, there's gonna have to be some real
- 51:15compelling things that bring me in.
- 51:17I, I mean, I love that car behind you.
- 51:19I love those wheels.
- 51:20God, those are so cool.
- 51:21This is the 500 e with the Porsche, uh, drive.
- 51:24Train, yeah.
- 51:25The ones that Porsche did the drive, train, assembly on.
- 51:27Yeah.
- 51:27Yeah.
- 51:28I, I love that car.
- 51:29I think that's a very fun idea right there.
- 51:32But that just makes you a European taxi cab driver.
- 51:34I don't, you know what, no one in Carroll County knows what a
- 51:37European taxi cab driver drives.
- 51:38I guarantee you.
- 51:39That's true.
- 51:40I'll give you that.
- 51:41That's very bad.
- 51:42I taxi cabs.
- 51:43Why?
- 51:43About why not a Crown Vic?
- 51:46Yeah, I was gonna say no Impala ss no Mercury Marauder.
- 51:49They're both great cars.
- 51:50I don't want one.
- 51:52Well, the real, the real sleeper Mercedes is not the 500 E, but the 400 E
- 51:57because that was a 300 E with a V eight.
- 52:00Oh, interesting.
- 52:01So it looked just like the 300.
- 52:04Except it happens to have a V eight in.
- 52:06They were nice cars.
- 52:07They weren't as exclusive as the 500.
- 52:10But they also weren't nearly as pricey or as, not finicky, but just
- 52:15fragile isn't even the right word.
- 52:17When stuff breaks into 500 E, you just kind of bend over with a 400 E.
- 52:22A lot of it's just off the shelf for safety, which I guess
- 52:25could be the same about the sl.
- 52:26Right?
- 52:26So the SL 500 I always thought was a gorgeous car, but to your
- 52:30point, doesn't come in a manual.
- 52:31I guess one of the criteria I was gonna do an sl.
- 52:33I definitely do the 600 because V 12.
- 52:36And the biggest problem with the SL 600 is it's a fucking whale.
- 52:42It's so heavy.
- 52:45You're not getting shit outta That's so I'm gonna throw out another idea.
- 52:51It's a car that's on the uh, panel right now that might be for
- 52:55sale if you gave enough money.
- 52:56It's a manual.
- 52:58It's German, it's four doors with a V eight.
- 53:01It's a seven 40.
- 53:03Oh, that's true.
- 53:04With a manual swap.
- 53:05Yeah.
- 53:06See that's another swap.
- 53:07You were talking about engine swaps.
- 53:09Talking about tranny swaps, right?
- 53:11Yeah, so, so the one thing that's really distracted me from this to go a
- 53:14little afield of nineties car has been a Ferrari F four 30 with a manual swap.
- 53:19It's like you buy an F four 30 for 80 grand, you, you put a $25,000
- 53:23transmission swap in it and you have a very, very cool fucking car.
- 53:28That's true.
- 53:28I'll give you that.
- 53:29I could see that as a valid distraction.
- 53:31I always struggled with my last M three because had that electronic differential,
- 53:35I had to like think about what the computer was gonna decide to do with
- 53:39the diff and, and that's what I love.
- 53:41The difference with the, the manual GT threes is they put a mechanical
- 53:46differential in it, whereas with the pks, they, they go electronic and, and
- 53:50they, they try to go best track time.
- 53:52But like, I, I agree with you.
- 53:54It, it was distracting, like where I thought the backend would
- 53:57step out on me on the M three.
- 53:58Like, I'd even get to the point where like, I, I was about to like,
- 54:01try to counter steer and then, yeah.
- 54:03And then the diff would fix it and I'm just like, what the, I
- 54:08can't, I can't stay ahead of you.
- 54:09What, what are you doing?
- 54:11I, I had friends who had the newer a g cars.
- 54:14The thing I dislike the most about them is it saves you.
- 54:17It saves you from stupidity, it saves you from anything you wanna do to it.
- 54:22And I said this many times before, I like cars.
- 54:24You have to respect the fact that anybody can get in there and push the pedal
- 54:27to the floor, turn the wheel sometimes and let the car fix the rest of it.
- 54:31There's no challenge in that.
- 54:32There's no fun in that.
- 54:33I couldn't agree more.
- 54:35You know, the, the Viper mentality, they didn't put traction control in until they
- 54:38were federally mandated to, you know, your traction control is the pedal and
- 54:43your, and your, and your, and your brain.
- 54:46Well, it's funny, it's funny that you say that.
- 54:48I've, I've heard a lot about on the nineties cars that like when you try
- 54:51to track them, the a BS can get really confused and it can can Oh yeah, yeah, it
- 54:56can, it can actually think it's on ice and so then it doesn't break very effectively.
- 55:01Sometimes like it, it gets confused and then you can't break
- 55:03into a turn and you hit a wall.
- 55:05E 36 is love to do that.
- 55:07That's true.
- 55:08I was gonna say, I'm surprised it's taken this long for the Viper to be mentioned.
- 55:12God damnit.
- 55:12I was saving it.
- 55:13I was saving it.
- 55:14That's my crown jewel.
- 55:16I know, I, I I figured you would've led with your favorite car, but, you
- 55:19know, no, save the best for last.
- 55:21You gotta start at the top.
- 55:22You know, I'm gonna break it down to a complete bare basic one.
- 55:26It's where you can fit multiple in a place of one vehicle if you want to.
- 55:29Oh God.
- 55:30Just an Austin Mini Cooper.
- 55:31I mean, they're cool ass fun little cars to drive.
- 55:34Yeah.
- 55:35And they built them forever.
- 55:36They were the same up until the, the, the Fatties came out.
- 55:38I mean, the, the new Minis came out, but, uh, not the, not, not the BM BMW Mini.
- 55:44The real Mini, correct, correct.
- 55:46Yeah.
- 55:46They built those in England up until the two thousands in the old style.
- 55:49Yep.
- 55:49I love all parts of Karcher.
- 55:51I, I appreciate the minis for what they are, but it's not, it just
- 55:55doesn't, it's not, you doesn't get me out of bed in the morning.
- 55:57I think, I think the Viper, you know, we talked a little bit about like cars that.
- 56:01The best 90 cars, nineties cars being made in 2001 or oh two.
- 56:05Yes.
- 56:06The best nineties viper from 2016 would be a great purchase.
- 56:11You can still buy those new today on any Dodge Lot, so you can still
- 56:15go, you can still find a Dodge dealer that never sold that car.
- 56:18They're sitting right next to the Dodge Dart and the PT Cruiser.
- 56:24At any rate, shout out to Romano.
- 56:26That's right.
- 56:26A hundred percent.
- 56:27The Viper is number one on my list by far.
- 56:29But in your case, see, I'm, I'm a, I'm a, I'm like a purist.
- 56:33I want a Targa.
- 56:34I just, I just want a Targa because it's the original, it's like a
- 56:37Cobra, the whole nine yard attack.
- 56:39And they, when they first came out with that GTS where I
- 56:41Exactly, that's where I was going.
- 56:43I still, I still remember when I was, I must, I think it was a
- 56:45junior in high school when they first came outta GTS, the odd, that
- 56:48car was gorgeous, so it still is.
- 56:50White, great looking car, loose stripes and that hood scoop.
- 56:53Nobody had hood scoops back then, except the WS six.
- 56:55Of course.
- 56:56Thing was, was uh, was evil looking.
- 56:58It was great.
- 56:59They're sub a hundred.
- 57:00You can still get a GTS coop for less than you guys are missing.
- 57:04You guys are missing the, uh, the best price for product.
- 57:08That was not a viper.
- 57:10I showed that's a low bar.
- 57:12Just so we're clear.
- 57:12It's a low, low bar, but go ahead please tell us the SRT 10 truck.
- 57:19Yes.
- 57:20Yes.
- 57:20Put that V 10 in the truck.
- 57:22It was a great car, great truck.
- 57:23I drove one of those and that's.
- 57:25It was the craziest fucking thing I've ever driven.
- 57:28I've driven, I've driven lightning.
- 57:30The SRT 10 truck is way more, fuck, I, I, I go, I think I go cyclone though.
- 57:35I think I'd go cyclone.
- 57:36Yeah, I agree with you on that.
- 57:37To drive home the dangerousness of the original vipers.
- 57:41I was talking to another instructor at an HPDE and he said one day a
- 57:44guy showed up in a viper and uh, he was talking to, to his coach.
- 57:48He goes, yeah, yeah, this is my third viper.
- 57:51I totaled the other two, so I figured I better learn how to drive it.
- 57:54Oh God.
- 57:55And then he totaled the third one at the track.
- 57:59I still want one.
- 57:59I don't care.
- 58:00I still want one.
- 58:01That's that, that reminds me of the C five Corvettes.
- 58:04Right?
- 58:04Like those things could snap on you so quick.
- 58:06Of course, I had that 85 Porsche nine 11 in big iron block way out in the back.
- 58:11Right?
- 58:11This was before they started inching it forward.
- 58:13Every generation.
- 58:14That thing almost killed me once, and the, the idea of having to
- 58:19like feather a throttle to like, so like you, you screwed up.
- 58:24Like too little or too much, and just this idea that you just kind
- 58:27of have to bounce on it to keep yourself from dying was, uh, yeah.
- 58:31Widow makers are funny.
- 58:33So I just heard something.
- 58:33I can't believe I just heard a Porsche owner admitting that the motor was too far
- 58:37back and they have to keep moving forward.
- 58:39Oh, those eighties cars the Right, I mean, so it was this huge iron lump, especially
- 58:43if you took some of the parts out, right?
- 58:44You're in a 2200 pound car with this, all this weight out back.
- 58:48Yeah, no, it was, it was really, really hard to hold a drift
- 58:52more skill than I, than I have.
- 58:54I couldn't do it.
- 58:55And so the couple times the backend really got out on me was kind
- 58:58of like puckering type moments.
- 59:01Well, since we're talking about German cars, now that we have
- 59:05left a few on the table, I think, and we talked about Mercedes and
- 59:08whatnot, we've mentioned a few BMWs.
- 59:11What about
- 59:14another Porsche?
- 59:16I'd love this idea.
- 59:17I think my next family car will probably be a tie can or something.
- 59:20Sure.
- 59:21What are you thinking?
- 59:21I've got a couple favorites all in the nineties, so I'll
- 59:24just rattle 'em off real quick.
- 59:269 68, 9 64, 9 64 RS America, 9 93, 9 28 S four or GTS 9 68 was a fine car.
- 59:36Its biggest problem was it was a four cylinder, which wasn't
- 59:40very exciting for buyers.
- 59:42If you could find a club sport though, whole different animal
- 59:45compared to the stock 9 68.
- 59:47Yeah.
- 59:47'cause they cut the counter.
- 59:48Sure.
- 59:49Well, and and it took everything, it took a lot of what the 9 44 had, which
- 59:53was phenomenal weight, balance, and spectacular handling, and added something
- 59:57that the nine 40 fours never had.
- 1:00:00You know, I mean, nine four, dare you impuning the turbo.
- 1:00:04The problem with the 9 68 would be getting real power up.
- 1:00:07Agree.
- 1:00:07Because they were 230 horse back in the day.
- 1:00:09Three liter.
- 1:00:09Yeah.
- 1:00:10Nothing fancy.
- 1:00:11You know, the four cylinders is a little tricky.
- 1:00:13You know, you're right.
- 1:00:14The, the non-cloud, like the originals, they, they had a really heavy
- 1:00:17counterweight, kind of made the motor not as much fun to try and make a
- 1:00:21smoother German driving experience.
- 1:00:24I love the idea of a 9 28.
- 1:00:25It is the coolest car from the eighties that was launched in the
- 1:00:30seventies and made through 1998.
- 1:00:32Yeah.
- 1:00:32Right.
- 1:00:33But it's, it is the coolest car of the eighties.
- 1:00:35I would totally love a, a 94 or five or whatever, if you can find 'em.
- 1:00:39I mean, those cars cost so much.
- 1:00:40Damn.
- 1:00:40Like the late model ones, those cars cost so much money.
- 1:00:44So I, I had this idea I was kicking around earlier of, there was a shop in
- 1:00:47Pennsylvania, I can't remember the name now, but they do, they do a lot of work
- 1:00:50on 9 28 motors to get through emissions.
- 1:00:53They launched the 32 valve in the 85, like so you can find a cheap 9
- 1:00:5728 and make a hot rod out of that as opposed to trying buy a four s or
- 1:01:01something, which, you know, is just, those cars are $70,000 or whatever.
- 1:01:06Unrestored.
- 1:01:07I just have to do a quick correction there, mark, because you said that
- 1:01:10was the coolest vehicle that like.
- 1:01:12Oh, oh God.
- 1:01:14Presented in the seventies and was available in the eighties.
- 1:01:16Eric, can you mute him?
- 1:01:17Body, square body.
- 1:01:19That's all I gotta say.
- 1:01:20Uh, box Chevy Caprice.
- 1:01:22Is that what he just said?
- 1:01:23Is that what I heard?
- 1:01:26That's a square body too.
- 1:01:28Holy cow.
- 1:01:28That's terrible.
- 1:01:29No, his favorite car.
- 1:01:30The Ford Tar Wagon that made it into the nineties, right?
- 1:01:33Mercury Sable wagon.
- 1:01:35But the thing is, I think the 9 64 was short-lived, right?
- 1:01:3988 to 92.
- 1:01:40It was only around for four years and it's underappreciated.
- 1:01:43But the thing that was badass about the 9 64 is all the variants
- 1:01:47that it came in in four years.
- 1:01:48The RS America, the CTR, two Yellowbird recreation that they did, the 9 64 turbo.
- 1:01:54I mean, there's a bunch of crazy, like it's like the last hoorah of
- 1:01:58the old school, nine 11 and to your point, a car that was built in the
- 1:02:01sixties that they dragged all the way through the nineties, and they finally
- 1:02:05got it right before they basically started over again with the 9 9 3.
- 1:02:08Now, don't get me wrong, the 9 9 3.
- 1:02:10Gorgeous car, especially some of those colors they had like that
- 1:02:13merlott and that ice blue and there's some really neat stuff.
- 1:02:17And I got the opportunity to ride in a 95 twin Turbo 9 9 3.
- 1:02:21And that was unbelievably eye-opening experience.
- 1:02:24And I, I, it, it still has left an impression on me to this day.
- 1:02:27Those cars are amazing.
- 1:02:28So those are on my vote.
- 1:02:30If you're gonna go with Porsches, all the ones I listed, there's some really
- 1:02:33cool stuff there in that really short window of time in the early nineties.
- 1:02:37It's too bad the 9 6 4 turbos have gotten up, uh, so much in price.
- 1:02:41Those, those are really cool.
- 1:02:42Those are really cool cars.
- 1:02:43They, they made a bunch of different cool, cool fun cars.
- 1:02:46Yeah, obviously I'd, if I, if I had a lot more money, I'd have a 9, 9 3 turbo.
- 1:02:50Of course car would be badass.
- 1:02:52Now I think there's another car we've forgotten about.
- 1:02:54You could buy it on a budget.
- 1:02:55You'd have a lot of money left over.
- 1:02:58What, what, what is this?
- 1:02:59S Miata.
- 1:03:00Well, there's always, well see you now.
- 1:03:02You're ruining it.
- 1:03:03The answer's always Miata, but VR six Rado.
- 1:03:07Oh, we're gonna do Rados.
- 1:03:09I loved Rados as a kid.
- 1:03:10I remember my dad and I, we'd go to this dealership and we'd looked
- 1:03:14at this, I remember at the time thinking like, this car is $27,000.
- 1:03:19Are they out of their mind?
- 1:03:20It was expensive.
- 1:03:21Yeah.
- 1:03:22And that's why we could see that one same car every week for a year, because
- 1:03:26they never saw if it was the one in dc if it was the red one in DC it's the
- 1:03:29one my dad ended up buying, by the way.
- 1:03:31Just like you know, it was one in Frederick.
- 1:03:33It was, it was in a f Fred.
- 1:03:34It was in the Frederick Volkswagen dealer.
- 1:03:36It sat there forever.
- 1:03:37But God, that car was cool.
- 1:03:39And I loved the idea of the, the supercharged four cylinder before
- 1:03:42the, before they put the VR six in it and um, G sixties, which I prefer
- 1:03:46the G six over to VR six, last femur.
- 1:03:49Blasphemer.
- 1:03:51Well, well, I, I almost, I almost bought a co, I almost bought, instead of that Z 28,
- 1:03:55instead of that 94 Z 28, I almost bought a rado, supercharged, uh, force cylinder.
- 1:04:00The big downside Rados had was they were heavy compared
- 1:04:04to anything Volkswagen made.
- 1:04:05The supercharged was slower than the Rocco that it replaced, which was a tough sell,
- 1:04:11and the V six, which was obviously faster.
- 1:04:14Suffered from the fact that it had this giant lump at the front.
- 1:04:17I mean, they were, they were neat looking cars.
- 1:04:19The problem with them was they just like every Volkswagen, they drive the wrong
- 1:04:23wheels and the weight distribution sucks.
- 1:04:25Now, I will say this, the VR six is one of those underappreciated engines though.
- 1:04:29And if you follow the VR Society guys on Instagram, they
- 1:04:32will swap a VR into anything.
- 1:04:34But it's amazing the amount of power they can get out of that 12 valve.
- 1:04:37I mean, 900 horsepower is not a stretch of the imagination to do
- 1:04:40out of that tiny little engine, which is absolutely amazing.
- 1:04:43But staying with that idea, also a car from the nineties, also
- 1:04:48from Volkswagen, also available with the VR six, the Eurovan.
- 1:04:52Think about Hot Roding.
- 1:04:53A Eurovan.
- 1:04:54That'd be pretty slick, man.
- 1:04:56Sounds nasty.
- 1:04:57Big turbo.
- 1:04:59You're still gonna light up the front end, but it's in a van.
- 1:05:02If I'm gonna hot Rod a minivan, I'll do it right and I will.
- 1:05:04Hot Rod a Honda Odyssey, like Rutledge Wood did.
- 1:05:08People actually did that like, like when the, the whole Fast and the Furious thing.
- 1:05:12It was, it was like when.
- 1:05:13It was like a second version of when like, uh, Dr.
- 1:05:16Dre got to the suburbs, right?
- 1:05:18And, and it was, and so all of a sudden you have all these kids thinking
- 1:05:22about like the crap they're gonna do.
- 1:05:24Like people were legit putting nitrous kits in Odysseys.
- 1:05:26Like, it sounds like a joke, but they did it.
- 1:05:29But what van could you buy with a manual transmission?
- 1:05:32None.
- 1:05:32None.
- 1:05:32That's fine.
- 1:05:33A Dodge Caravan.
- 1:05:34The Chevy Astro also I think offered a manual for a couple years.
- 1:05:38I know, I know someone who had a Dodge Caravan stick shift when?
- 1:05:41When I was in high school.
- 1:05:42Did the Eurovan come with a manual too?
- 1:05:43This Eurovan I just put in the chat is a manual.
- 1:05:47There you go.
- 1:05:47Boom.
- 1:05:48This one's a camper too.
- 1:05:50What's a West Flia?
- 1:05:52West Flia.
- 1:05:53So Mike being a BMW guy, BMW fan, I think there's one we've forgotten.
- 1:05:59Z one.
- 1:05:59I can't afford an original Z eight, but a Z one with the door thing that drops down.
- 1:06:04It could be hot.
- 1:06:05The Z eights are slick.
- 1:06:06Those are, those are hot.
- 1:06:06Those, these are so hot.
- 1:06:08I love the z eights back in the day.
- 1:06:09It is a Z car.
- 1:06:10Come on.
- 1:06:11Come on, Mikey.
- 1:06:12Oh, the clown shoe.
- 1:06:13That one?
- 1:06:13Yeah, the clown shoe started in 98.
- 1:06:16Z 3M or whatever the, the penis mobile.
- 1:06:18It was like an upside down cocking balls.
- 1:06:23So those are, those are, you could hoon around in those cars.
- 1:06:26They're light, they're agile.
- 1:06:27Decent power for as for as big as they are with the 3.2 liter
- 1:06:31especially, I drove a, A 98 that was that a gentleman I know special
- 1:06:35ordered and all this kind of thing.
- 1:06:36It was a cool car I had visibility wise, I thought it was a little
- 1:06:39awkward, but it all depends on your height more than anything.
- 1:06:42But everybody kind of raves about the clown shoe.
- 1:06:45You gotta get over the aesthetics of it.
- 1:06:47But it is definitely a hoon car and.
- 1:06:50In typical BMW fashion, throw a dine kit on it or something else like
- 1:06:54that and make gobs of horsepower.
- 1:06:55Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:06:56I, I almost bought a Z four M when I got my E 46, M three.
- 1:07:00I was kind of going between the two, but the original Z 3M
- 1:07:04would, would be a ton of fun.
- 1:07:06That would be pretty, I, I kind of imagine they're, they're ugly.
- 1:07:08You either love them or hate 'em.
- 1:07:10I think I'd love one, I think I'd love one and that, and that's another
- 1:07:13car you really have to respect because it's got a boatload of
- 1:07:16power and no wheel base to speak of.
- 1:07:18Yeah.
- 1:07:18You know, and, and that's fun.
- 1:07:20So do we have any other suggestions for Mark?
- 1:07:25I think we should go around the, the horn and give our best Hail Mary.
- 1:07:29I think so too.
- 1:07:30Well, I wanna, I wanna highlight a few things and Mark, you can correct me if I'm
- 1:07:33wrong, some of the things you went ooh, ah, about as we were talking about this.
- 1:07:37I think 9 28 was on that list.
- 1:07:39I think the Audi S eight was on that list.
- 1:07:41500 or five Audi E 500 for sure.
- 1:07:44And maybe the BMW eight series.
- 1:07:46Right.
- 1:07:46So those are like the top five kind of out of the list of
- 1:07:4930 that we posted out there.
- 1:07:50But I think, I think Brad's right, we, we don't have an American one in there.
- 1:07:52I like the WS six.
- 1:07:53I think that's a fun idea.
- 1:07:55I could do that.
- 1:07:55Let's shotgun it.
- 1:07:56Let's start, Matt, what would you recommend a hundred grand to spend
- 1:08:00one car from the nineties go?
- 1:08:02Probably the 500 E Mount.
- 1:08:05Well, I was gonna say we didn't, uh, for American cars earlier, I don't think
- 1:08:07we mentioned it, but the Ford SHO was a bit of a sleeper back in its time.
- 1:08:12So.
- 1:08:13Get the fuck outta here with the Yamaha motor.
- 1:08:15Get the fuck outta here.
- 1:08:17Wise guy.
- 1:08:18What is this Taurus stuff?
- 1:08:20So before it went Ular, the older boxier, the Robocop one, the
- 1:08:27Robocop with the Yamaha V six.
- 1:08:29That's not a bad, that's not a bad suggestion.
- 1:08:32Ford probe.
- 1:08:33So Mountain man Dad, that you, you're a Blasphemer dude.
- 1:08:35You cannot recommend a Ford as a bow tie man.
- 1:08:38So what's your shotgun for Mark?
- 1:08:40No, no, no.
- 1:08:40I wasn't recommending it because I'm not a fan of SOI was just mentioning it.
- 1:08:44As I mentioned, Uhhuh, definitely, like I said earlier, I'm a hundred
- 1:08:47percent on board with the WS six option.
- 1:08:49'cause there's.
- 1:08:50A ton of aftermarket stuff you can do.
- 1:08:52And those LS engines will take tons of power.
- 1:08:55But if you're gonna go with European best bang for your buck would be go online
- 1:08:58and try to find something and ship it.
- 1:09:00'cause I think you would get it here stateside and have a lot more
- 1:09:02money to be able to invest in it than if you were to buy one already.
- 1:09:05Stateside.
- 1:09:06This is the slowest speed round I think we've ever done.
- 1:09:09Yeah, because everybody's got 10 other, you know, things
- 1:09:11they want to add in there.
- 1:09:12Race, Iran, what are you thinking?
- 1:09:13Shotgun citation X 11.
- 1:09:16No, that's too word.
- 1:09:17Oh god, I'm, I'm thinking the Esplanade all the way.
- 1:09:20The ante, thees.
- 1:09:21Esper.
- 1:09:22Classy car.
- 1:09:23Beautiful.
- 1:09:23Makes a lot of power holds.
- 1:09:25People got modern, uh, conveniences and still hauls ass and you can
- 1:09:29make a ton of power with that.
- 1:09:30Five liter or bigger.
- 1:09:32I have three.
- 1:09:32The Ferrari F 3 55, the Shelby Series.
- 1:09:35One or one that would actually be attainable for me.
- 1:09:38The 3000 GT Shelby series one.
- 1:09:41Do we know how much those cost?
- 1:09:42They're, they're in the stratosphere.
- 1:09:44They're expensive.
- 1:09:45Oh yeah.
- 1:09:45Nope.
- 1:09:46Out of budget.
- 1:09:46I like some of the suggestions that have been put out.
- 1:09:49I mean, I am, I was surprised by the WS six because I forgot about
- 1:09:52it, and I do really like that car.
- 1:09:54I think that's a lot of fun.
- 1:09:55I think you could have a lot of fun with that.
- 1:09:57But for the amount of money you would spend in a WS six, you would park
- 1:10:02it in your garage next to your GT three and go, oh God, I own a pond.
- 1:10:05I'd park it on top of my GT three.
- 1:10:07Yeah, right.
- 1:10:08You'll never drive that.
- 1:10:10WS six and the interior is complete garbage.
- 1:10:13It's like sitting in your Cavalier from the eighties all over again.
- 1:10:16Point in case, right?
- 1:10:18So that you would be miserable.
- 1:10:19That's why I say if you're, if you're really thinking about going down that
- 1:10:22route and you don't want something exotic like the Penos or you know, all these
- 1:10:27other cars we talked about, I honestly believe my heart of heart Viper is
- 1:10:32the answer because it's already done.
- 1:10:34It sounds amazing.
- 1:10:35It looks amazing.
- 1:10:36It, it's not even moving.
- 1:10:38And it looks fast.
- 1:10:39It is fast.
- 1:10:40It's a cool car.
- 1:10:41It's it's quintessential nineties.
- 1:10:43They got it right.
- 1:10:44Especially with the GTS coop.
- 1:10:45I don't think you can go wrong and you're probably gonna end up.
- 1:10:49You know, picking one up, let's say in the market of 70 to 80, you know,
- 1:10:52pristine condition, low mileage without having to do a whole heck of a lot.
- 1:10:56And you'll have money left over in your pocket.
- 1:10:58You know, you build some of these other cars and you're still left
- 1:11:00with whatever the base car was.
- 1:11:02Now the exception to the Viper rule, like I said, is if you go back to
- 1:11:07the Porsches from the early nineties or mid nineties, there's some really
- 1:11:10cool stuff there, especially if you could find a low mileage 9, 9 3 or
- 1:11:13even a 9 64 or something like that.
- 1:11:15But you already have a nine 11 and you want something different.
- 1:11:18So I still think my vote lies with the Dodge.
- 1:11:21Alright.
- 1:11:21Alright.
- 1:11:22And secretly I wanna drive it after you get it.
- 1:11:24So just letting you know and, and I'm gonna change, I'm gonna drop the series
- 1:11:27one because they are unobtainium and I'm gonna replace it with the B five S four.
- 1:11:32I like that.
- 1:11:33I like that.
- 1:11:34I think I'd go S eight if I was gonna do Audi though.
- 1:11:36I agree with you on that one.
- 1:11:37Been there, done that.
- 1:11:39I'm gonna throw this out there.
- 1:11:40I know you, this is for me.
- 1:11:41Just so we're clear.
- 1:11:42This is for me.
- 1:11:43Oh, you're not buying me a car.
- 1:11:45Well, why are we doing this shit?
- 1:11:49It's what waste should I buy?
- 1:11:50What should last 90 minutes?
- 1:11:54Eric was uh, talking some trash on your Ws just now.
- 1:11:58But here's the thing though.
- 1:11:59Pontiac is no longer a brand.
- 1:12:01That means it's only gonna increase in value.
- 1:12:03Bullshit.
- 1:12:04It's gonna stay at 15 grand for its eternity.
- 1:12:09No, I, so I think, no, actually I do think you're right.
- 1:12:12I, I think probably a good condition one would go up.
- 1:12:15The, the problem is, is like, I'm, like I said, I do want to get into
- 1:12:18modification and, and personalization of it, and I, I think that will kind of.
- 1:12:22Will hurt Its resale of, of a viper or are you talking about the problem?
- 1:12:25Oh, the, the w the like, you know, of the W six or whatever of a viper.
- 1:12:29I mean, everybody knows that's a death trap.
- 1:12:32I think if, honestly, if I were gonna get a viper, I don't think
- 1:12:35I'd get one from the nineties.
- 1:12:36Like I think it would scratch that nineties itch, but I would get a later
- 1:12:39one and you know, then one of the ones that makes 640 horsepower or whatever,
- 1:12:43and it's, you're getting that outta the box and it only costs 20 grand more
- 1:12:47than the one from the nineties anyway.
- 1:12:48I mean, I've ridden on track in an A CR and it's unbelievable.
- 1:12:52One of my favorite cars ever.
- 1:12:53I mean, you can keep everything else as, as far as I'm concerned.
- 1:12:58So just like every, what should I buy?
- 1:13:00Episode, we never really do come to a logical conclusion.
- 1:13:04Lots of really great suggestions and I'm gonna put air quotes around.
- 1:13:07Great.
- 1:13:07And it was really fun to have everybody on the show.
- 1:13:09So Mark, hopefully we gave you some food for thought, you know, maybe
- 1:13:12some things you weren't thinking about, some other things to consider,
- 1:13:15some sleepers and and whatnot.
- 1:13:17So we wish you luck on your journey.
- 1:13:19We wanna follow back up with you and see what you end up buying.
- 1:13:21You know, thanks for coming on.
- 1:13:22This has been a lot of fun.
- 1:13:23Awesome.
- 1:13:24You know, I really appreciate it.
- 1:13:25You guys have given me a lot to think about.
- 1:13:26I, I think it's important for me, like I try not to get married to any one idea.
- 1:13:31And so I try to find that mix of like the car that's in the right condition
- 1:13:36and, and kind of checks those boxes.
- 1:13:38And, and so it's like, I, I, it's not like I'm gonna come out of this and
- 1:13:41just pick one car and then I'm gonna go and try and hunt and find that it's
- 1:13:44more of like, it's kind of broadened my horizons from a search perspective.
- 1:13:48I will find a car that feels right and I'll pick it up, and you guys
- 1:13:51have given me a lot of good ideas and, and I, and thinking in different
- 1:13:55directions from cars and even purchase markets to where I want to do that.
- 1:13:58So I appreciate it.
- 1:13:59This has been great.
- 1:14:00Very cool.
- 1:14:00Very cool and we wanna thank our panel of, uh, guest g tmr tonight,
- 1:14:04racer Ron Hazmat mountain man.
- 1:14:06Dan, obviously, Brad and I are always here and if you're listening to this
