Latest / Patriots Unfiltered / Training Camp-Cast 8/4: Fifth Straight Practice in Pads, Offense and Defense Trade Punches, Injury Updates
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Patriots are back in pads again, fifth straight practice in
- 0:03Speaker 1: six days. For them, things are getting tough out there.
- 0:05Speaker 1: The offensive defense continue to trade punches. Let's get into it.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Welcome to the Patriots Training Camp cast, presented by New Balanced.
- 0:20Speaker 1: That's right, folks, were back again to break down the
- 0:23Speaker 1: ninth practice of the summer.
- 0:25Speaker 2: The fifth in pads. Fifth and six days too.
- 0:28Speaker 1: You feel like starting to stack up a little bit
- 0:30Speaker 1: back and forth, though, I feel like early on ev
- 0:33Speaker 1: you have some downfield plays.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Now it feels a lot more like the defense. Stuff's
- 0:36Speaker 2: a run, the offense makes a little pass.
- 0:38Speaker 3: You know. It just seems like it's a lot.
- 0:40Speaker 1: More tightly contested here in camp, almost like the two
- 0:42Speaker 1: sides are kind of getting used to each other a
- 0:44Speaker 1: little bit.
- 0:44Speaker 4: Yeah, I would agree that maybe they've seen a lot
- 0:47Speaker 4: of the same color out there and you're starting to
- 0:49Speaker 4: predict plays and things like that. That's this time of year.
- 0:52Speaker 4: But you mentioned five days out of six in pats.
- 0:55Speaker 4: You know, really five straight practices in pads with an
- 0:58Speaker 4: off date in there. They'll be, you know, walk through tomorrow.
- 1:01Speaker 4: But this is as far as this time of year,
- 1:05Speaker 4: and like this iteration of NFL training camp, this is
- 1:08Speaker 4: about as intense as it gets.
- 1:10Speaker 2: This is training camp right now. This is the training camp.
- 1:12Speaker 4: I was trying to think of the best way to
- 1:14Speaker 4: put it, because we don't really do training camp like
- 1:16Speaker 4: they used to anymore. Poly So this is about as
- 1:19Speaker 4: intense as it gets in terms of the number of
- 1:22Speaker 4: padded practices. So it's been a tough camp, and I
- 1:25Speaker 4: think that the intensity has definitely been there as well.
- 1:28Speaker 4: And it's hot and they're hitting a lot, and it's
- 1:31Speaker 4: good to see. I think it's a team that's coming
- 1:33Speaker 4: off a loss in the Super Bowl that doesn't want
- 1:35Speaker 4: to be the classic Super Bowl hangover a team.
- 1:38Speaker 3: And I do wonder, you know, and this might may
- 1:40Speaker 3: be a question that we can talk to Mike about
- 1:43Speaker 3: later on, but for all the success they had last year,
- 1:46Speaker 3: they did get off to a slow start, and I
- 1:48Speaker 3: wonder if maybe it was a conscious effort, you know,
- 1:50Speaker 3: maybe we weren't quite as prepared as we needed to
- 1:52Speaker 3: be to start the season. And this is something to
- 1:55Speaker 3: remedy to that.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Yeah, Well, a couple of things I wrote down today
- 1:58Speaker 1: im and it felt to me a little bit star
- 2:00Speaker 1: for the offense, felt a little clunky, not a lot
- 2:02Speaker 1: of passes being completed seems like Drake I mean, they're
- 2:05Speaker 1: throwing a lot of zero blitzes at him in practices,
- 2:07Speaker 1: and there are times where they're bailing out too, but
- 2:10Speaker 1: it seems like they're continuing to get the offense on
- 2:12Speaker 1: some of those blitzes that we know were a big
- 2:14Speaker 1: part of the Patriots defense last year. But the end
- 2:18Speaker 1: of the practice, more eleven work, a two minute dro
- 2:21Speaker 1: felt like they found their stride a little bit on offense.
- 2:23Speaker 4: They're coming from everywhere on defense right now. I mean
- 2:25Speaker 4: they're bringing safeties, they're bringing linebackers. Gonzales came on a
- 2:29Speaker 4: corner blitz that would is stuff to.
- 2:30Speaker 5: Run as well.
- 2:32Speaker 4: They're really dialing it up, you know, different pass rush fronts,
- 2:35Speaker 4: you know, double mug things like that, and there's a
- 2:37Speaker 4: lot going on up front right now. And I think
- 2:39Speaker 4: it's good work for Drake May and in the running
- 2:41Speaker 4: backs and everybody involved because this is kind of what
- 2:45Speaker 4: got them in the playoffs, especially in the Super Bowl
- 2:47Speaker 4: last year, and I think they're going to keep seeing
- 2:49Speaker 4: more and more of it until they prove that they
- 2:51Speaker 4: can block it. So whether it's Drake May getting everybody
- 2:54Speaker 4: on the same page, the running backs picking up blitzes
- 2:57Speaker 4: and being in the right positions. I think that's all
- 3:00Speaker 4: good work for them. But what it does lead to
- 3:02Speaker 4: is the ball's coming out quick. So we're not seeing
- 3:05Speaker 4: a lot of Drake may downfield magic right now because
- 3:08Speaker 4: it's third down and six and the ball's got to
- 3:11Speaker 4: come out because there's a free runner coming at him.
- 3:13Speaker 4: But we know we can throw the ball down the field.
- 3:15Speaker 4: So I guess maybe this is more of what you
- 3:18Speaker 4: want to see in practice.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Yeah, a little back and forth, and you know, I
- 3:20Speaker 3: think Mike did a good job of sort of explaining that,
- 3:23Speaker 3: you know, the Patriots can never have a good practice
- 3:25Speaker 3: because someone is going to feel, you know, better about
- 3:29Speaker 3: what happened on a particular play or a particular period
- 3:32Speaker 3: than the other side of the ball. I think there's
- 3:34Speaker 3: been a lot of back and forth. I think I
- 3:36Speaker 3: wrote yesterday just so it was sort of one of
- 3:37Speaker 3: those punch CounterPunch kind of days. I thought today was
- 3:41Speaker 3: a little like that too. I agree with Evan. I
- 3:43Speaker 3: thought a lot of running in checkdowns, you know, blitz beaters,
- 3:47Speaker 3: you know, you know, trying to get the hot receiver quickly.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Didn't have a lot of time. But then you know,
- 3:53Speaker 3: as the practice on Foldia was funny because I thought
- 3:55Speaker 3: that was what the case was with Drake May. When
- 3:57Speaker 3: DeVito gets out there, all of a sudden, it's bombs away.
- 4:00Speaker 3: So you know, maybe it's a little bit of a
- 4:02Speaker 3: different defensive look and that's allowing for those plays to
- 4:04Speaker 3: get off deeper down the field.
- 4:06Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, two's and guys that maybe aren't as
- 4:08Speaker 4: familiar with the system, and even the new guys in
- 4:11Speaker 4: this system right now, it's Kevin Byerd who's been in
- 4:13Speaker 4: the defense for a decade, so it's not like he's
- 4:16Speaker 4: new to the defense.
- 4:17Speaker 5: So Davino had a hell of a practice.
- 4:19Speaker 4: Honestly, he had some of the best downfield completions of
- 4:23Speaker 4: the day for sure.
- 4:25Speaker 5: One to Booty, one to mac Hollins.
- 4:27Speaker 4: I mean, I know we don't want him to play
- 4:30Speaker 4: no offense, but like it was a good practice, I.
- 4:32Speaker 3: Would say, though. You know, I spent some time yesterday
- 4:35Speaker 3: talking up an undrafted rookie cornerback named Channing Canada. Well,
- 4:39Speaker 3: I said was around the ball a lot. He was
- 4:40Speaker 3: around the ball a lot today too, Only the guy
- 4:42Speaker 3: that he was around was the guy catching the pass
- 4:45Speaker 3: generally deep down the field. He struggled today. Yeah, in
- 4:48Speaker 3: some of those plays with the ones Evan's talking about,
- 4:50Speaker 3: Mac Collins got him, Kaysehon Booty got him a couple
- 4:53Speaker 3: of times, so you know, a little back and forth.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Yeah, good day for Booty. Had a couple catches aj
- 4:58Speaker 1: Brown again. No worse for Whear after dislocating his thumb yesterday,
- 5:01Speaker 1: he was.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Right back in there. A couple of housekeeping things too,
- 5:04Speaker 2: you know. Still no Carlton Davis.
- 5:05Speaker 1: That's been the most extended absence, Jack Westover, Reggie Gilliam,
- 5:09Speaker 1: perhaps full back, a lot of short yard is yesterday.
- 5:11Speaker 1: A lot of collisions for him, not surprising. He's maybe
- 5:14Speaker 1: getting a day of rest. Still no Kayden Wallace. And
- 5:16Speaker 1: we saw Morgam Mooses for the first time. Wasn't at
- 5:18Speaker 1: the beginning of practice. And then right before team rolled around,
- 5:20Speaker 1: here comes Morgan Moses up the hill. Good to see
- 5:23Speaker 1: him out there. But they're managing his workload. One last
- 5:26Speaker 1: thing I want to bring up, guys, and we haven't
- 5:27Speaker 1: really talked about it, and that's probably a good thing.
- 5:29Speaker 2: It's just Andy Boorgallis. They ran a two minute drill
- 5:31Speaker 2: today again like a maybe fifty two yard or so
- 5:34Speaker 2: to end it. Nailed it. But he's been really consistent
- 5:36Speaker 2: with his kicks.
- 5:37Speaker 1: We've had so many kicker competitions here, We've had rookie
- 5:40Speaker 1: kickers come in and it just doesn't look right. It's
- 5:43Speaker 1: kind of a breath of fresh air to just have
- 5:44Speaker 1: a kicker come in and be really consistent. And there's
- 5:47Speaker 1: really you know, I have no concerns right now about
- 5:48Speaker 1: Andy Boorgolis going into this season.
- 5:50Speaker 3: He's he's been locked down since the start of his
- 5:54Speaker 3: rookie season. He has really not given anyone much reason
- 5:57Speaker 3: to doubt him.
- 5:58Speaker 4: Yeah, nice little two minute drill from Drake May. I thought,
- 6:00Speaker 4: you know, past to Henry and the flat move, the
- 6:03Speaker 4: chains on third down with Pop Douglas against Marcus Jones
- 6:06Speaker 4: and the slot. The big one was the dig the
- 6:08Speaker 4: Hollins in the middle of the field. Some completions there
- 6:11Speaker 4: to get them down the field, and they probably had
- 6:13Speaker 4: one more play that they could have ran, but he
- 6:15Speaker 4: ran the clock down and spiked it and I'll.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Save it for Patriots unfiltered. I want to get into
- 6:19Speaker 3: that one.
- 6:20Speaker 4: Yeah, maybe you can test Andy a little bit, make
- 6:22Speaker 4: him kick one from fifty plus instead of you know,
- 6:24Speaker 4: a shorter field goal there. But I thought that the
- 6:27Speaker 4: operation in the two minute drill was relatively smooth. He
- 6:31Speaker 4: had one incompletion to Romeo Dobbs he'd probably want back,
- 6:34Speaker 4: but for the most part, not not too shabby on
- 6:37Speaker 4: the two minute drill.
- 6:38Speaker 3: First time.
- 6:38Speaker 5: I think we've seen like a true.
- 6:40Speaker 4: So hands off, coaches to the side, two minutes on
- 6:43Speaker 4: the clock and we're.
- 6:45Speaker 5: Going to run a real two minute drill.
- 6:47Speaker 1: All right, Well, Patriot's probably gonna downshift now after these
- 6:50Speaker 1: five padded practices, were expecting a walk through tomorrow, a
- 6:52Speaker 1: close practice on Thursday, and then fans will be welcome
- 6:55Speaker 1: back on Friday. I think that will be a pad
- 6:57Speaker 1: one so times running out, folks, if you can get
- 6:59Speaker 1: down here, Friday will be the next day to do so.
- 7:01Speaker 1: And then of course next Tuesday joint practices of the
- 7:04Speaker 1: Indianapolis Colts should be a great take. But we'll be
- 7:06Speaker 1: back this week to break down whatever they're doing with
- 7:09Speaker 1: these training camp casts.
