- 0:01You know, in other main political news and one of the
- 0:03other stories I had on my list I was probably going to get to
- 0:05when we came back from our last break and then I had to, of
- 0:08course, call an audible was about Susan Collins and Cash
- 0:11Patel. Senator Susan Collins on
- 0:13Wednesday told the heads of two federal law enforcement agencies
- 0:16that Maine needs more federal help combating illegal marijuana
- 0:20grow houses. At a hearing to review budget
- 0:23requests from federal law enforcement agencies, the
- 0:26Republican senator from Maine asked FBI Director Cash Patel
- 0:30what the Bureau is doing to address the dangerous grow house
- 0:33operations in Maine, Oklahoma, California and other states.
- 0:38A leaked federal government memo in two, 2023, Excuse me,
- 0:42connected illegal marijuana grow houses in Maine to Chinese
- 0:46organized crime, estimating at the time the presence of 270
- 0:51grow sites in Maine linked to China that could provide more
- 0:55than 4 billion dollars, $4 billion in revenue.
- 1:01I guess if you are Bobby Charles and you're looking for your 4
- 1:04billion, there it is 4 billion, $4 billion.
- 1:11Thank you, Lee. I can connect to anything,
- 1:17right? I can.
- 1:19About 60 properties were searched in 2024.
- 1:21At the end of that year, and Assistant US Attorney estimated
- 1:24that well below 100 such properties remained in the
- 1:28state. Collins said that federal
- 1:31agencies have been helpful in the past to track money
- 1:33laundering, which is often linked to these grow houses, and
- 1:36provide interpreters to question suspects who are arrested who
- 1:40may have been trafficked and forced to work and live at the
- 1:44illegal operations. Quote, last year you testified
- 1:47that the FBI would be sending more resources to the field,
- 1:50specifically to Maine, to combat these dangerous operations,
- 1:54Collins said, adding the local sheriff's have reported some
- 1:57improvements in federal interest and participation.
- 2:00Patel said that many of the Chinese citizens running the
- 2:03illegal grow operations have severed their with their home
- 2:08country. In response, he said the FBI is
- 2:10working with Homeland Security task forces to reverse engineer
- 2:14the connections through banking records in an effort to shut
- 2:17down the financiers of the US operations.
- 2:21Asked by Collins if a connection existed between the grow houses
- 2:24and the fentanyl trade, Patel said that revenue from the sales
- 2:28of the illegally grown marijuana quote always goes back into
- 2:33drug, into the drug trafficking trade, into the drug traffickers
- 2:38pockets. But the federal officials have
- 2:40not been able to confirm a direct connection to the Chinese
- 2:43government quote. I'm not saying it doesn't
- 2:46happen, Patel said. What we're not seeing yet is the
- 2:49money directly being shipped back over to mainland China and
- 2:54the CCP from these grow house operations.
- 2:56But you see, therein lies the rub, right?
- 2:59It's pause for a second and just do a little, little mini
- 3:02analysis, shall we? It doesn't have to go back.
- 3:05I mean, if the Chinese government is sponsoring,
- 3:10supporting and otherwise lifting up or at the very least excusing
- 3:16and allowing this kind of operation to happen, you know,
- 3:21the entire goal of it could actually be domestically
- 3:23American. Like there, there does not
- 3:24necessarily have to be some sort of a ship of cash back to the
- 3:29Chinese government. In fact, if I was them and and
- 3:32part of my goal was fostering chaos, drug addiction, social
- 3:37problems, etcetera in the United States, you know you wouldn't
- 3:41need it to. There's no there's no reason to.
- 3:42And all I would do would be put your fingerprints all over it
- 3:44And you want plausible deniability, right?
- 3:46I mean, I'm sorry, do I think like a criminal in in that I'm
- 3:48thinking like this? It's like you want to have the
- 3:51ability to deny it. You want to not have a
- 3:53connection on paper. You want to be able to kind of
- 3:55have a distance so that if anybody catches anybody else,
- 3:58they don't lead anyone to you. Seems logical to me, right?
- 4:03But that doesn't mean that this stuff isn't at the behest,
- 4:06direction or otherwise orchestration of the Chinese
- 4:09Communist government, because I have to imagine there is a
- 4:12significant involvement in this. Because when you look at what
- 4:15else they do, what are we talking about?
- 4:18I think even with Craig Peterson yesterday, right?
- 4:20I mean, I know we talked about Russians more than the Chinese,
- 4:22but he did mention the Chinese. Like, we have geopolitical
- 4:25adversaries that we compete with militarily, economically,
- 4:31socially, we we compete with him a lot.
- 4:33And we're not friends. We just aren't.
- 4:36And they are constantly trying to do us harm.
- 4:39You know, the Russians have been the more famous of the two
- 4:41because they're, I don't know, Dumber or worse at it.
- 4:45So they get caught more often. But they have operations which
- 4:48are intended to sow social discord in the United States.
- 4:51Like when you go on Twitter and you find really stupid arguments
- 4:56about like racial politics, I mean, you probably are not aware
- 5:00of this, but about 50% of the things that you're seeing, there
- 5:03aren't even real people. That is, I mean, and this is not
- 5:07even this is not even up for debate.
- 5:08This has been shown to happen right where by these bots that
- 5:12the Russian government sponsors has the goal of social, social
- 5:16discord. And so they go into places that
- 5:19sow it, often times social media, you know, the Twitters of
- 5:22the world, the Instagrams of the world, the Tik Toks of the
- 5:24world. And they, they try to sew that
- 5:27division. They try to inspire it and stoke
- 5:30it and poke the bear. And so they, you know, a lot of
- 5:33the, the most ridiculous statements and fights and
- 5:36whatever else that you've seen have obvious obviously been at
- 5:39the behest of foreign governments that are just trying
- 5:41to screw with us. And so you're expecting me to
- 5:44believe that the Chinese government and the Russian
- 5:46government does that. But in the case of sponsoring
- 5:50more social discord, sponsoring more social degradation, more
- 5:56economic loss, more problems and crime, they wouldn't be
- 6:01interested in doing that. Really, really, really I think
- 6:06they would be. And that's what I think we're
- 6:08ultimately getting at here. And that's what Collins was
- 6:10getting at by the question, right.
- 6:11Like is there any sort of direct link proven?
- 6:13Not yet. No, we're not seeing the money
- 6:15flow directly back to mainland China.
- 6:17But that doesn't mean that there isn't a connection.
- 6:23It is right. And that's the other part of
- 6:24this is that you can hide it and, and it's, it's by its very
- 6:29nature, it's sort of obfuscated a bit, so a little a little
- 6:33obscured from public view. So I don't, I'm not surprised
- 6:37that you have been able to put those fingerprints on anything.
- 6:39And I doubt you will be able to and we'll see.
- 6:41I mean, if it is indeed, if it has gone from like 300 of these
- 6:45down to 100 or less, that is progress obviously.
- 6:48But I can tell you they are certainly still there and they
- 6:51are certainly still a problem. So any sort of federal
- 6:54involvement in the law enforcement side of things to
- 6:57tackle that? Oh, that'd be a.
- 6:58Good thing visa be Trump and Xi Jinping right now, XI.
- 7:01Jinping, a very good point. Yes, that is indeed a other
- 7:04story I might be getting to today, but let's take a break.
