- 0:00Speaker 1: It is Togatz, the company presented by FanDuel on the
- 0:02Speaker 1: FanDuel Sportsbook. The last time we spoke to this person,
- 0:06Speaker 1: he started his new ESPA. Well, since the last time
- 0:09Speaker 1: we talked to this person, he has started his new
- 0:11Speaker 1: show on ESPN Radio with his son, Mike Goldick Junior.
- 0:15Speaker 1: But also he has taken the radio color analyst job
- 0:19Speaker 1: for Notre Dame. So much for slowing down, Mike Golic Senior.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Jesus, listen, I man, I may have bitten off more
- 0:29Speaker 2: than a right daily radio show Notre Dame Radio and
- 0:33Speaker 2: then and then Westwood One Sunday Night Football Radio.
- 0:36Speaker 3: I this is all a ploy for my wife to
- 0:40Speaker 3: keep me out of the house and keep me from retiring.
- 0:43Speaker 4: Yeah, well, happy wife, happy life, Mike.
- 0:45Speaker 5: That's it.
- 0:47Speaker 4: No one is doing more than you to.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Make her happier by being out of the house seven
- 0:53Speaker 1: days a week.
- 0:54Speaker 4: What are you thinking, man.
- 0:56Speaker 5: Listen, I don't know.
- 0:58Speaker 3: I mean, we're gonna give this, give us to go,
- 1:00Speaker 3: and we'll say, well, give it a go. I'm on
- 1:03Speaker 3: of contract with ESPN, I'm on contract with Notre Dame,
- 1:05Speaker 3: and I'm under contract with us with one. So there
- 1:09Speaker 3: really is just buckling up and doing it is what
- 1:11Speaker 3: there is.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Mike, Will anything make you happier than being in the
- 1:16Speaker 1: booth calling those Notre Dame games?
- 1:18Speaker 4: I can't imagine much will make you happier.
- 1:21Speaker 5: This was really a labor of love.
- 1:24Speaker 3: I mean, for as much as I have been associated
- 1:26Speaker 3: with Notre Dame since my brother first went there in
- 1:28Speaker 3: nineteen seventy five, to my whole family there.
- 1:32Speaker 5: And I was owning a home there.
- 1:34Speaker 3: I mean, people always ask me what team do you
- 1:37Speaker 3: root for, thinking in the pro sports and I say none.
- 1:40Speaker 3: I said, the team is Notre Dame that I certainly
- 1:43Speaker 3: have an affinity for, and yeah.
- 1:46Speaker 5: This we have season tickets.
- 1:48Speaker 3: So I was in the stadium watching games before I
- 1:51Speaker 3: go do my Sunday night NFL game. But now I
- 1:54Speaker 3: will just switch seats to the booth and call it.
- 1:57Speaker 3: But yeah, I'm stoked and looks like it could be
- 2:00Speaker 3: a great year for Notre Dame.
- 2:02Speaker 5: So really, really, this is a labor of love.
- 2:06Speaker 1: You'll just have to do away with those tailgating parties,
- 2:08Speaker 1: those legendary golic tailgates, right.
- 2:11Speaker 6: Oh no, I'll still get hammer before the game.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Are you trying to get back into the house? What
- 2:21Speaker 1: are you doing there? I mean, yeah, yeah, how about it.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Huh yeah, that a lot. That will be interesting. And
- 2:29Speaker 1: the whole year starts out in Wisconsin. A lambeau Field
- 2:32Speaker 1: this year playing against Wisconsin. So that's the heck of
- 2:35Speaker 1: a way to open the season. I heard Evan Cohen,
- 2:37Speaker 1: who is a friend of mine, Mike, you'll laugh at this.
- 2:40Speaker 1: I was his camp counselor way back when, and really yes,
- 2:43Speaker 1: at a sleep away camp.
- 2:45Speaker 4: It was called Campwinaukee.
- 2:47Speaker 1: I was one of his counselors way back when he
- 2:49Speaker 1: went to Wisconsin. I am super proud of him. But
- 2:52Speaker 1: I heard he made some sort of lame bet with
- 2:54Speaker 1: you guys involving the spread Wisconsin Notre Dame.
- 2:56Speaker 4: Am I correct, Well, that was amazing.
- 2:59Speaker 3: He been something if he just said, you know, hey,
- 3:02Speaker 3: Notre Dame looks like they're gonna be good this year.
- 3:04Speaker 3: My team Wisconsin is still trying to get going under
- 3:07Speaker 3: Luke Fickle.
- 3:08Speaker 5: You know, maybe we can make a wager with the points.
- 3:11Speaker 5: But he didn't do that.
- 3:12Speaker 6: He said, I Wisconsin team is back.
- 3:14Speaker 3: He was singing their praises from the highest of high mountain,
- 3:19Speaker 3: talking about how good Wisconsin's gonna be, and then said
- 3:22Speaker 3: he wanted to have a bet with me and my
- 3:24Speaker 3: son Mike, with the points, which I think is twenty
- 3:27Speaker 3: two and a half. I'm like, if you're gonna talk,
- 3:29Speaker 3: if you're gonna talk that much smack about how good
- 3:32Speaker 3: your team is, then man up and do it by
- 3:35Speaker 3: by straight.
- 3:36Speaker 5: Up no points.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Yes, congratulations, your team lost by twenty one exactly.
- 3:41Speaker 6: Yeah it was only a three touchdown loss, but you
- 3:44Speaker 6: won the bet.
- 3:47Speaker 5: Mike.
- 3:47Speaker 1: I know you so well, so I know that you enjoyed.
- 3:50Speaker 1: You love Hall of Fame weekend. You don't love attending it,
- 3:53Speaker 1: you don't have to attend, but you love the weekend.
- 3:56Speaker 1: You love validation, and you love those speeches. Correct who
- 3:59Speaker 1: loved the speech?
- 4:00Speaker 3: And again it's not we all know what the player
- 4:03Speaker 3: did to get into the Hall of Fame. I love
- 4:06Speaker 3: the support groups going back to middle school to high
- 4:10Speaker 3: school to college, the people that were important in their
- 4:13Speaker 3: lives because you never do it alone.
- 4:15Speaker 5: You always have a group behind you.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Is it a mom, a dad, an uncle and aunt,
- 4:21Speaker 3: a friend, a coach, the wife, a kid?
- 4:24Speaker 5: I mean, who was there?
- 4:27Speaker 3: And I just love love those stories, I really really do.
- 4:31Speaker 4: Were you nervous? Mike?
- 4:32Speaker 1: We're a day away from preseason game number one? And
- 4:35Speaker 1: I am wondering, did you ever get nervous before preseason games?
- 4:39Speaker 1: What was that feeling like for you before you actually
- 4:41Speaker 1: played a game, finally played a game.
- 4:43Speaker 6: Oh, I absolutely I was nervous.
- 4:46Speaker 3: I was a tenth rounder, you know, I was not
- 4:49Speaker 3: guaranteed a slot on the team, so I was playing
- 4:52Speaker 3: in these preseason games. The goal to get to if
- 4:55Speaker 3: you're an NFL or really any professional athlete who plays
- 4:59Speaker 3: preseason games, your goal is to not have to play
- 5:02Speaker 3: in them.
- 5:02Speaker 5: That is the goal.
- 5:03Speaker 3: If a coach would have ever come up to me
- 5:05Speaker 3: in my nine years and said, hey, we're gonna sit
- 5:08Speaker 3: you this game, I would have been ecstatic, but that
- 5:11Speaker 3: never really happened to me. So yeah, I was nervous.
- 5:16Speaker 3: This is when I you know, practice is one thing.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Obviously they evaluate practice, but then it's the preseason games
- 5:22Speaker 3: where guys in my position get a lot of reps
- 5:25Speaker 3: and either you know you're gonna make the team or
- 5:27Speaker 3: you're not going to make the team.
- 5:29Speaker 5: So yeah, I was nervous.
- 5:30Speaker 1: All right, I am told we now have the jokes
- 5:32Speaker 1: from now I'm told that we don't have the jokes
- 5:35Speaker 1: from Adam Vinnittie minitary.
- 5:37Speaker 6: Just forget the bad joke.
- 5:39Speaker 4: Yes, oh my I don't have my normal staff here.
- 5:45Speaker 5: I was born.
- 5:46Speaker 4: I just felt like talking to you. I'm sorry, Oh
- 5:48Speaker 4: my god. What'd you make of the vikings?
- 5:50Speaker 5: Go?
- 5:50Speaker 4: I'm not going back to the jokes, Carlos, so forget
- 5:53Speaker 4: about it.
- 5:53Speaker 5: No, we're done with that.
- 5:55Speaker 4: Yes, Golak's got to leave here.
- 5:57Speaker 1: What do you make of Kyler Murray being named the
- 5:59Speaker 1: starting quarterback? I guess if you're going to bring in
- 6:01Speaker 1: Kyler Murray, you're gonna take a flyer Kyler Murray, Flyer Murray.
- 6:06Speaker 4: I guess he's the guy you have to start for
- 6:08Speaker 4: the upside.
- 6:08Speaker 3: I don't think you had to start him because it
- 6:11Speaker 3: wasn't a money thing. They're only paying him one point
- 6:14Speaker 3: three million. He's getting thirty five mil from Arizona. So
- 6:17Speaker 3: I still think if JJ McCarthy would have beat him out,
- 6:21Speaker 3: that they would have started him. But listen, I had
- 6:24Speaker 3: reservations when JJ McCarthy was taken in the first round.
- 6:28Speaker 3: I just didn't think he was a first round quarterback.
- 6:31Speaker 3: And this just goes to tell us that it wasn't
- 6:34Speaker 3: really a competition. When you make the decision before you
- 6:38Speaker 3: even get to preseason games, then it wasn't really a competition,
- 6:42Speaker 3: So Kyler and Kyler Murray listen. He is purely in
- 6:47Speaker 3: a position of betting on himself because according to his deal,
- 6:51Speaker 3: they can't franchise tag him. So he is a free
- 6:54Speaker 3: agent at the end of this year, no matter what,
- 6:57Speaker 3: to be signed by anybody. So if he has a
- 6:59Speaker 3: great he has put himself in a great position. The
- 7:02Speaker 3: real question is gonna be what happens with JJ McCarthy
- 7:06Speaker 3: going into his third year. You can renegotiate, or you
- 7:09Speaker 3: can negotiate an extension with that first round drafter the
- 7:12Speaker 3: third year. That's not gonna happen, right, They're not going
- 7:15Speaker 3: to pick up his fifth year option.
- 7:17Speaker 5: The big question is gonna be.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Do you keep him as a backup because he's twenty
- 7:21Speaker 3: three years old and really just starting his career, or
- 7:24Speaker 3: do you say, okay, maybe we can get some for
- 7:27Speaker 3: him and we trade him away. He just he just
- 7:29Speaker 3: hasn't really lived up it, some by injury, which is
- 7:32Speaker 3: in his fault, and some by just bad play. Yeah,
- 7:35Speaker 3: so that he's in a real tough spot.
- 7:38Speaker 5: He is.
- 7:39Speaker 1: It's gonna be interesting to see how that thing plays out.
- 7:41Speaker 1: I feel like, Mike, we're disrespecting. You know, we all
- 7:44Speaker 1: talk about the LA Rams and it's rams of the field,
- 7:47Speaker 1: and you know the Seahawks are sitting in that same
- 7:49Speaker 1: division saying, hey, we beat him, We beat him a
- 7:52Speaker 1: couple of times. We went to the Super Bowl, we
- 7:54Speaker 1: won the Super Bowl, and no one's talking about us.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Is that a positive for the Seahawks? Can they use
- 7:59Speaker 1: that as a chip because they are being disrespected?
- 8:02Speaker 4: Well, you can.
- 8:04Speaker 3: I mean you can listen. Players and or coaches will
- 8:07Speaker 3: find anything to put a chip on your shoulder. And
- 8:11Speaker 3: does it make you work harder in the offseason?
- 8:15Speaker 5: Does it make you.
- 8:15Speaker 6: Work harder in preseason and in training camp?
- 8:18Speaker 5: I don't know if I buy that.
- 8:21Speaker 3: At the professional level, it certainly doesn't matter when the
- 8:25Speaker 3: game starts.
- 8:26Speaker 5: You're going to play hard in the game. If you're
- 8:28Speaker 5: playing harder in a game.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Because of that, I would question you if you're gonna
- 8:32Speaker 3: play your hardest.
- 8:33Speaker 5: In the game no matter what.
- 8:35Speaker 3: But yeah, I mean looking from the outside looking in,
- 8:38Speaker 3: you would say they're being disrespected, But it also tells.
- 8:41Speaker 6: You just how or just what is thought of Miles.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Garrett and potentially Aaron Donald. I think we all think
- 8:49Speaker 3: Aaron Donald is coming back I think it's more a
- 8:51Speaker 3: feather in their cap of saying just how dominant of
- 8:55Speaker 3: a player Miles Garrett is to be on that team,
- 8:58Speaker 3: and then the possible addition re addition of Aaron Donald
- 9:03Speaker 3: to put them as the favorites.
- 9:05Speaker 6: I think it speaks more about those guys.
- 9:07Speaker 4: You buy it into the Cowboys like everyone else seems
- 9:09Speaker 4: to be.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Not really, because you look at the players that they
- 9:15Speaker 3: brought in, right the Rashaan Gary's at Kenny Clark the year.
- 9:19Speaker 5: Before, and I'm missing.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Williams quinnin Williams right, none of those guys in their
- 9:28Speaker 3: careers have ever had double digit sacks, right, so, and
- 9:33Speaker 3: Michael Parsons regularly had double digit sacks, tons of pressures.
- 9:39Speaker 3: You had the game plan around Michael Parsons and you
- 9:41Speaker 3: traded them, still a trade I would.
- 9:43Speaker 5: Never have done.
- 9:44Speaker 3: But it looks like they're putting pieces together, but it's
- 9:48Speaker 3: only on paper right now. I'm interested to see what
- 9:51Speaker 3: Caleb Downs will do their draft pick that will kind
- 9:54Speaker 3: of run the defense as the safety that the multiversaal safety.
- 9:59Speaker 6: That they have.
- 10:00Speaker 3: But no, I am definitely not saying, oh yeah, they've
- 10:03Speaker 3: done it. They've put some nice.
- 10:05Speaker 6: Names in there. But let's see if you get the production.
- 10:08Speaker 3: And congrats to Quinn Williams getting paid the move did wow?
- 10:11Speaker 1: Yes, oh unbelievable. Yeah, really amazing. And you gotta give
- 10:16Speaker 1: Jerry Jones credit. He's been quiet during the off season.
- 10:18Speaker 5: He really has.
- 10:20Speaker 3: And it's probably best, right, I mean, at some point,
- 10:24Speaker 3: at some point, you just have to let the play
- 10:26Speaker 3: on the field do the talking. You know, you have
- 10:29Speaker 3: one since ninety six. You do have three Super Bowl trophies,
- 10:32Speaker 3: which is impressive, but it has nothing.
- 10:35Speaker 5: For thirty years.
- 10:36Speaker 3: So yeah, it's time to He's made some great he
- 10:39Speaker 3: is Stephen Jones have made some good moves acquiring defensive players.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Let's see in practical application what it does.
- 10:46Speaker 4: Mike, who's the quarterback? Will get you out of here
- 10:48Speaker 4: to second?
- 10:48Speaker 1: Check him out every weekday ten to noon, the Golicks
- 10:52Speaker 1: him and his son on ESPN Radio. Who's the quarterback
- 10:55Speaker 1: that you're most interested in seeing? In terms of is
- 10:58Speaker 1: he going to grow into the quarterback? I think he's
- 11:00Speaker 1: going to be, whether it be Justin Herbert or Caleb Williams,
- 11:04Speaker 1: or maybe it's Jaden Daniels. Who is the guy who's
- 11:06Speaker 1: the quarterback that Mike Golick is keeping an eye on
- 11:09Speaker 1: because you want to see him make that next step.
- 11:12Speaker 3: Well, I think I think a guy I'm looking at
- 11:15Speaker 3: is is Jordan Love.
- 11:17Speaker 5: Green Bay.
- 11:17Speaker 4: That's a great one because.
- 11:19Speaker 3: The Packers, the Packers are right there, I mean the Packers,
- 11:23Speaker 3: and that division was the only division last year that
- 11:29Speaker 3: had all winning records, right everybody. The Minnesota in de
- 11:33Speaker 3: front were nine and eight, and then you had a
- 11:35Speaker 3: nine and seven and one and eleven and six. So
- 11:37Speaker 3: that's the most competitive division in football. And I think
- 11:40Speaker 3: the Packers now know Michael Parsons for the first six weeks,
- 11:43Speaker 3: which hurts, But I'll be I'm gonna interested to see
- 11:46Speaker 3: Jordan Love and really probably Caleb Williams two of his
- 11:51Speaker 3: next step. But but you wanted me to give you one,
- 11:53Speaker 3: I'll say Jordan.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Love, all right, Mike, We we discussed this right when
- 11:58Speaker 1: the season was over, how much we were going to
- 12:00Speaker 1: miss it, but we were looking forward to a little offseason.
- 12:02Speaker 4: It is two weeks away.
- 12:03Speaker 5: Man.
- 12:04Speaker 3: We are back, how about that. I mean, we are back.
- 12:07Speaker 3: We are better than ever. I mean, it is it
- 12:12Speaker 3: is here. They're preseason games were loading up on them.
- 12:15Speaker 3: I mean, it's just it's kind of that you know
- 12:18Speaker 3: just that.
- 12:19Speaker 5: Ah yeah, moment like we made it. We made it
- 12:23Speaker 5: through the dold rooms.
- 12:24Speaker 4: We made it from baseball right.
- 12:26Speaker 3: Yes, we now have non stop football through February.
- 12:30Speaker 4: Yes, and you have NonStop work through February.
- 12:32Speaker 5: Oh my god.
- 12:34Speaker 4: Yeap, So get some rest, my friend. We're happy for you.
- 12:38Speaker 1: Dream jobs one with your son at ESPN and in
- 12:41Speaker 1: the booth for Notre Dame. And then you know, Westwood
- 12:43Speaker 1: won for a little extra cash.
- 12:45Speaker 3: You know, yeah, it really you step back and you
- 12:49Speaker 3: think about it. It really is cool something I definitely
- 12:52Speaker 3: want to take advantage of, even though I'm freaking sixty three.
- 12:55Speaker 3: You think I'd be cutting things out instead of adding.
- 12:57Speaker 4: Things, Yeah, well you should be, but that's your decisions.
- 13:01Speaker 1: By the way, I heard the show got off to
- 13:02Speaker 1: a flying start first day. Gullick Junior texted me during
- 13:06Speaker 1: the first break. It said, if you listen to that
- 13:08Speaker 1: first segment, you'd never be prouder of me about that.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Oh oh, he immediately brought your name up, and we
- 13:14Speaker 3: thought of you.
- 13:15Speaker 6: He just absolutely flubbed it up. I mean, ten seconds
- 13:19Speaker 6: into the.
- 13:20Speaker 3: Show, talk about getting it out, talk about the old
- 13:23Speaker 3: line of you never have a perfect show. Well, he
- 13:25Speaker 3: decided ten seconds in to live that theory.
- 13:30Speaker 4: The perfect game was ruined after three minutes.
- 13:33Speaker 3: Oh yeah, nice, you know what three minutes, ten seconds.
- 13:36Speaker 3: But I can say then the pressure was off. We
- 13:38Speaker 3: had already screwed.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Up, that is, and you were perfect of course. Yes, yes,
- 13:45Speaker 1: you're a Hall of Famer, Mike. We appreciate it. We
- 13:48Speaker 1: will talk to you again in the next couple of weeks.
- 13:51Speaker 1: But good luck with the show. I know it's going well.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Most importantly, congratulations to you. I am happy for.
- 13:57Speaker 4: You doing it with Junior. I am more happy that
- 13:59Speaker 4: you're doing Notre Dame in games this year. That's gonna
- 14:01Speaker 4: be fun.
- 14:02Speaker 5: Yeah, I appreciate it. Thanks to you.
- 14:04Speaker 4: Got it.
