Latest / Stugotz and Company / Set 1: Are the Rams Overrated? (w/ Bear)
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that Chuck Norris was chasing the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
- 0:05Speaker 2: The Rex was not chasing the Jeep. Murray! Murray, you there?
- 0:10Speaker 2: You love sandwiches, huh? Let's go to 80. His name
- 0:14Speaker 2: is Bo. Wow. That's prime time, baby. I had a
- 0:18Speaker 2: crush on Betty Rubble.
- 0:19Speaker 1: I honestly, until after the segment ended and we went
- 0:22Speaker 1: to commercial break, had no idea that Jonathan Coachman was black.
- 0:25Speaker 2: He cost them the game last night. Although they won
- 0:28Speaker 2: the game. You're listening to Stugatz & Company.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Mikey A, put it on the ball or the Rams overrated?
- 0:39Speaker 2: They look bad last night, Mikey A.
- 0:41Speaker 1: We'll get to Bear and his picks for the weekend
- 0:43Speaker 1: coming up here in about five or six minutes. But, Mikey,
- 0:46Speaker 1: we were having a debate on the radio yesterday. Taylor,
- 0:48Speaker 1: it was a think about it Thursday. You were off
- 0:50Speaker 1: of radio. We asked the question, do you like San
- 0:53Speaker 1: Francisco's way of traveling to Australia? They got there a
- 0:55Speaker 1: week in advance. Were the Rams' way off? which is
- 0:58Speaker 1: hop on a bird, get off the bird, play a
- 1:00Speaker 1: football game, and go home. San Francisco clearly chose the
- 1:06Speaker 1: right way to attack a game in Australia.
- 1:09Speaker 3: I will say San Francisco picked the right way for
- 1:12Speaker 3: game one. Let's see how it works game two when
- 1:15Speaker 3: they have to go back and all of a sudden
- 1:17Speaker 3: get back.
- 1:18Speaker 2: On the U.S.
- 1:18Speaker 4: Clock instead of the Australia clock.
- 1:22Speaker 5: In one week.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Because you're saying their minds and bodies, at least for
- 1:26Speaker 1: another two weeks, are going to be in Australia time.
- 1:28Speaker 1: And as someone who went there for three weeks, I
- 1:30Speaker 1: can tell you Mikey is right.
- 1:33Speaker 4: They might have won the battle and lost the war, Sanford.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Who do they play next weekend? That's a great question.
- 1:41Speaker 1: It's a great point by you.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Meanwhile, right. It feels like the Rams.
- 1:46Speaker 4: Doesn't matter. They're home to the Dolphins next week. It
- 1:48Speaker 4: doesn't matter.
- 1:49Speaker 2: They could fall asleep. They're fine. Never mind. Excuse me.
- 1:53Speaker 2: I messed up.
- 1:55Speaker 4: San Francisco's way was better.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Put it on the poll.
- 1:59Speaker 1: If the Niners are sleeping during the Dolphins game because
- 2:01Speaker 1: they're still on Australian time, do you still expect them
- 2:04Speaker 1: to win?
- 2:09Speaker 2: Oh, man. We shouldn't be surprised, right?
- 2:13Speaker 1: Especially... There hasn't been a game played in the NFL, Mikey.
- 2:16Speaker 1: And we always say on any given Sunday, in this case,
- 2:18Speaker 1: it was on any given Friday night in Melbourne, Australia.
- 2:22Speaker 1: But we shouldn't be surprised. San Francisco's a good team.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Brock Purdy's a good quarterback. Kyle Shanahan's a great coach.
- 2:29Speaker 1: And they beat the Rams, everyone's favorite, headed into the season.
- 2:32Speaker 1: We've talked about it, Rams of the field. But we
- 2:35Speaker 1: should not be surprised with last night's results. San Francisco's
- 2:39Speaker 1: a good football team.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Winning the game wasn't the surprising part. Winning 27-7, making
- 2:46Speaker 3: Matt Stafford look like he's finally hit that wall or
- 2:49Speaker 3: he's a rookie, making that defense look like, oh, they're
- 2:53Speaker 3: easily gotten to, making Myles Garrett, who's supposed to be
- 2:59Speaker 3: the world record, and he is, but he didn't even
- 3:01Speaker 3: have a quarterback pressure in that game.
- 3:04Speaker 4: That's the surprising part. Not a win, but a win
- 3:08Speaker 4: like that was why it was surprising.
- 3:10Speaker 1: I mean, I'm hoping when the Rams get home from
- 3:12Speaker 1: this trip that Aaron Donald is still willing to play
- 3:15Speaker 1: for that crappy team.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Maybe he signs with San Francisco.
- 3:21Speaker 4: I am unretiring, just not for you.
- 3:25Speaker 2: That team over there, they're good.
- 3:26Speaker 1: They're a defensive tackle away from maybe.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Making it to a Super Bowl. It's funny.
- 3:33Speaker 1: You know what was interesting last night? That was San Francisco.
- 3:35Speaker 1: McCaffrey didn't do much. and San Francisco still beat the
- 3:39Speaker 1: most talented team in the NFL, and they beat them
- 3:42Speaker 1: up good. That's the thing, and I think you're right
- 3:44Speaker 1: about it. It's not San Francisco winning the game. It's
- 3:47Speaker 1: the way San Francisco won that game.
- 3:49Speaker 5: It's crazy to me.
- 3:50Speaker 3: They didn't ask Christian McCaffrey to do much. Like, they
- 3:54Speaker 3: gave him 10 carries. They gave their new rookie, Kalon Black,
- 3:58Speaker 3: they gave him 14 carries. Now, in those 10 carries,
- 4:02Speaker 3: Christian McCaffrey had 68 yards to Kalon Black's 65, so.
- 4:06Speaker 4: I mean, do the math there, but it was, it was.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Interesting to see also how Mike Evans, despite missing most
- 4:13Speaker 3: of the preseason with an injury, him and Brock party
- 4:16Speaker 3: look like, Oh, this is how, this is how we're
- 4:19Speaker 3: going to work it. I'm going to throw it up
- 4:21Speaker 3: to you and you're going.
- 4:21Speaker 2: To catch it. Yes.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Uh, he's a big target. He's a great wide receiver. Uh,
- 4:26Speaker 1: they have Debo Samuel back, uh, and you're right.
- 4:29Speaker 2: The rookie ran.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Listen, if you have an opportunity and I don't think that,
- 4:33Speaker 1: you know, um, I don't think Shanahan went into last
- 4:36Speaker 1: night's game thinking this would be one of those opportunities.
- 4:39Speaker 1: But if you have an opportunity to win a football game, Mikey,
- 4:42Speaker 1: and only give Christian McCaffrey the ball 10 times, he
- 4:45Speaker 1: had five catches for 20.
- 4:46Speaker 2: So he had 15 touches.
- 4:48Speaker 1: You take those opportunities because you want to keep him
- 4:50Speaker 1: healthy for the entire regular season, something he did a
- 4:53Speaker 1: year ago, but he hasn't done frequently in his career.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Yeah, it's more of a fantasy thing at this point
- 5:01Speaker 3: where you look at him and you go, if that's
- 5:03Speaker 3: going to be the split going forward, where Christian McCaffrey
- 5:06Speaker 3: is involved in the offense, but he's not the focal point,
- 5:11Speaker 3: what's that going to do to his numbers?
- 5:14Speaker 2: Right. If you took him in fantasy. Of course.
- 5:19Speaker 4: And I didn't.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Yes, but Kyle Shanahan doesn't care about your fantasy team.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Nor should he.
- 5:24Speaker 1: He cares about his football team. And I would tell
- 5:26Speaker 1: you to pick up Kalon Black. That's what I would
- 5:28Speaker 1: tell you to do if indeed he's going to get
- 5:30Speaker 1: the ball that much. Stafford's interesting. Listen, you can fly
- 5:34Speaker 1: a bunch of young guys across the world to Australia,
- 5:37Speaker 1: but as you get up there in age and you
- 5:39Speaker 1: approach your 40s, you're in your 40s, you can't just
- 5:42Speaker 1: hop on a bird for 23 hours, hop off the
- 5:45Speaker 1: bird and play quarterback at a professional level. You can't
- 5:48Speaker 1: at that age. You know, Brock Purdy could do it,
- 5:50Speaker 1: but he's still in his 20s. Matthew Stafford's an old man.
- 5:54Speaker 4: I know. He's like 40.
- 5:58Speaker 5: Right.
- 5:59Speaker 1: And I'm just telling you, it's different. Flying is different
- 6:02Speaker 1: as you get older. I mean, don't you feel it?
- 6:05Speaker 2: You're my age. He hates me.
- 6:09Speaker 5: I hate you.
- 6:12Speaker 1: So what's going to happen here? What's the conversation going
- 6:15Speaker 1: to be today and over the weekend? The Rams are
- 6:18Speaker 1: overrated or San Francisco is underrated and really good and
- 6:21Speaker 1: could potentially make it to the Super Bowl out of
- 6:23Speaker 1: the NFC.
- 6:24Speaker 3: What should be the conversation is how's good San Francisco is.
- 6:27Speaker 3: What will be the conversation is that the Rams are overrated.
- 6:32Speaker 1: They're the LSU of the NFL. And I got to
- 6:37Speaker 1: tell you, Mikey, I have to be honest with you.
- 6:40Speaker 1: I delighted, and I imagine I'll feel the same way
- 6:42Speaker 1: if LSU and Lane Kiffin loses a game and gets
- 6:45Speaker 1: blown out in unexpected fashion.
- 6:47Speaker 2: I was delighting.
- 6:49Speaker 1: It's Sean McVay having it handed to him by Kyle Shanahan.
- 6:53Speaker 2: I was just because they're overwhelming. I'm tired of the Rams.
- 6:58Speaker 5: Why do we hate Sean McVay? I don't know.
- 7:03Speaker 4: Now it's Sean McVay.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:06Speaker 1: I listen to the written. They think they're smarter than everyone.
- 7:08Speaker 1: They think they're better than everyone. And maybe they are.
- 7:11Speaker 1: They're handsome guys. They're in good shape. They look good.
- 7:13Speaker 1: They got tons of money, but to send your accounting
- 7:16Speaker 1: staff over to Melbourne, Australia, To test out whether it's
- 7:20Speaker 1: good to be there for 24 hours or for a
- 7:23Speaker 1: week seems like a total waste of time. And it
- 7:26Speaker 1: turns out that it was.
- 7:28Speaker 3: I just have you watching NFL games now, and every
- 7:31Speaker 3: time they show certain players or coaches, you go, what.
- 7:33Speaker 4: Do you think you're better than me?
- 7:37Speaker 2: Put it on the poll. Does Sean McVay think he's
- 7:40Speaker 2: better than you? He is.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Does Les Snead also think he's better than you? Put
- 7:46Speaker 1: that on the poll. You're saying McVay is better than us?
- 7:51Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. I'm not 0-1. Bear from some hotel in
- 7:57Speaker 2: middle America. Next.

- 9:19Speaker 1: He is in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the site of a
- 9:23Speaker 1: crime last.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Week with the University of Michigan.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Bear is getting to the bottom of what the hell
- 9:31Speaker 1: happened at Michigan. Michigan takes on Oklahoma. Big new kickoff
- 9:35Speaker 1: is there. So Bear is there.
- 9:36Speaker 2: What's going on, man?
- 9:37Speaker 5: I'm in the middle of a Dickens novel here. My
- 9:40Speaker 5: mood lighting behind me trying to get to the bottom
- 9:43Speaker 5: of the crime that took place. The only people out
- 9:47Speaker 5: there that don't think that Western Michigan got screwed or
- 9:52Speaker 5: Michigan fans. If you associate it with anybody but Michigan,
- 9:56Speaker 5: you're like, what the hell? like how is like western
- 9:58Speaker 5: michigan not being declared the winner of this game and
- 10:01Speaker 5: yes i almost turned the channel off like last week
- 10:04Speaker 5: but like i started laughing i'm like oh my god
- 10:06Speaker 5: they actually lost the game and i'm like look at
- 10:09Speaker 5: my hand turn the turn the game i'm like what
- 10:12Speaker 5: are they looking at.
- 10:15Speaker 2: A different clock.
- 10:18Speaker 5: The double secret probationary clock that apparently exists it is
- 10:22Speaker 5: interesting though because the ncaa to come out now and
- 10:27Speaker 5: like issue this by ruling and they're basically saying yeah
- 10:32Speaker 5: they fucked up but we can't do anything.
- 10:34Speaker 1: About it yes It was odd to me that Western
- 10:37Speaker 1: Michigan was not nearly as upset as everyone else was.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Yes, I mean.
- 10:43Speaker 5: Like, fight for your team. Now, again, the theory out
- 10:47Speaker 5: there was we don't want to upset the Big Ten
- 10:49Speaker 5: because then we're not going to get any of the
- 10:53Speaker 5: big non-conference paydays. So, like, who knows? But, yeah, fight
- 10:57Speaker 5: for your team, Mikey.
- 10:59Speaker 3: Bear, everything you're saying is right. Stop a 50-yard Hail Mary.
- 11:03Speaker 3: Before you get upset, stop a 50-yard Hail Mary.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Listen, do it twice.
- 11:12Speaker 3: Bear, when you're in Michigan, where do you get to
- 11:14Speaker 3: watch Thursday night football? Do you get to go out
- 11:17Speaker 3: to a bar or do you have to stay in
- 11:19Speaker 3: that dark room and watch it on a 13-inch black
- 11:21Speaker 3: and white?
- 11:23Speaker 1: I mean he can go to a bar he can
- 11:25Speaker 1: stay in the room my guess is he stays in
- 11:27Speaker 1: the room because he doesn't want to go to a
- 11:28Speaker 1: bar i mean.
- 11:29Speaker 5: I was in my room yes i got i got
- 11:32Speaker 5: to the room last night around 8 15 8 30
- 11:37Speaker 5: right and yeah i just stayed in here and had
- 11:41Speaker 5: a really uh expensive exclusive dinner with some boiled egg
- 11:45Speaker 5: whites and Watchables, yeah. We record Bear Bets Thursday in
- 11:53Speaker 5: New York. So, like, I'm flying out usually, like, at 5,
- 11:56Speaker 5: 5.30 from LaGuardia's. I'm not getting in to wherever I
- 12:00Speaker 5: need to go until after dinner has already started and
- 12:02Speaker 5: probably finished most weeks. So, yeah, I don't mind going
- 12:05Speaker 5: to the room. Had the U.S. Open on last night.
- 12:08Speaker 5: Had Copa Libertadores on last night as well, like, flipping
- 12:11Speaker 5: back and forth. There was a lot to do here,
- 12:14Speaker 5: get some work done. So, I don't mind. Hold on
- 12:16Speaker 5: a second.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Copa and the USO. You had Miami playing. You're a
- 12:21Speaker 3: Miami alum. They won 77 to nothing.
- 12:23Speaker 2: It was pointless to watch that after the first quarter.
- 12:26Speaker 3: And then you had the NFL Melbourne game and you're
- 12:31Speaker 3: watching Copa.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Come on, Bear. Listen, he's watching Copa.
- 12:35Speaker 1: What he's doing is he's expensing as much as he
- 12:37Speaker 1: can on Fox's account.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Okay.
- 12:39Speaker 1: That's what he's doing. As much room service as he's
- 12:42Speaker 1: opening the minibar. He's doing everything he can to spend
- 12:48Speaker 1: Fox's money as quickly as he can.
- 12:50Speaker 5: Somehow I spent $ 52 at the Detroit versus everybody gift shop.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Yes.
- 12:56Speaker 5: Yes.
- 12:57Speaker 1: But Mikey's larger point is right. The NFL was on
- 12:59Speaker 1: last night and you're the guy who came on last week.
- 13:01Speaker 1: You've been great, by the way, through two weeks, you
- 13:03Speaker 1: have been fantastic. The audience appreciates it, but you did
- 13:06Speaker 1: say the Rams are going to go. I think through
- 13:09Speaker 1: five games, you said they're going to be one in
- 13:10Speaker 1: four and the Rams lost last night.
- 13:13Speaker 5: Yeah. I thought that was a great bet to be
- 13:15Speaker 5: able to potentially make it whatever the price was. I
- 13:18Speaker 5: forget what the hell, 14 to one, 15 to one
- 13:19Speaker 5: or something like that, but what it was. And yeah,
- 13:22Speaker 5: you would think they'd come home now and beat the Jazz,
- 13:23Speaker 5: but There's a non-zero chance that the Rams basically said
- 13:29Speaker 5: F you to the NFL in this schedule last night.
- 13:33Speaker 5: Isn't there? They're like, okay, we're going to go out.
- 13:35Speaker 5: We're just going to go the day before. We're not
- 13:37Speaker 5: going to mess up our entire season, mess up more
- 13:40Speaker 5: than one week. We're going to go out. We're going
- 13:42Speaker 5: to play the game. Whatever happens, happens. And we're going
- 13:44Speaker 5: to get our asses back here and prepare for the
- 13:46Speaker 5: actual regular season. There's a non-zero chance they said that.
- 13:51Speaker 5: It sure as hell looked like it with their play
- 13:52Speaker 5: on the field.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Aaron Donald didn't make the trip. It's interesting.
- 13:56Speaker 1: They did the same thing when they went to Europe
- 13:58Speaker 1: last year. They flew in, played the game, flew out.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Australia is a different animal, man. I don't know if
- 14:04Speaker 1: you could just fly in, hop off a bird, play
- 14:06Speaker 1: a football game, hop back on a bird. The Niners
- 14:09Speaker 1: look like a refreshed team. The only reason I would
- 14:12Speaker 1: counter that it's a division game against the Niners. I
- 14:16Speaker 1: have to think the Rams, there's no way they said
- 14:18Speaker 1: to themselves, Hey, we're going to punt on this game.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Is there?
- 14:23Speaker 5: It sounded good, didn't it?
- 14:24Speaker 2: It really did.
- 14:27Speaker 5: Who are you to be the arbiter of, like, reasoning?
- 14:30Speaker 2: Logic.
- 14:34Speaker 5: What's going on with him all of a sudden?
- 14:36Speaker 1: Well, just because it's the Niners, that's all. That game's
- 14:39Speaker 1: going to be important down the road, possibly.
- 14:41Speaker 5: It is. I guess, really, kidding aside, I mean, obviously,
- 14:47Speaker 5: they wanted to play, and they wanted to win and compete,
- 14:51Speaker 5: but It sure as hell looked like they took the
- 14:55Speaker 5: theory body-wise that we just need to get back.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Yes.
- 15:01Speaker 5: And from someone who spent a month in Australia a
- 15:04Speaker 5: couple of years ago with the Women's World Cup, I
- 15:06Speaker 5: can tell you when I came back after being there
- 15:09Speaker 5: for a month, it was out of commission for like,
- 15:13Speaker 5: Eight to ten days. My body was screwed up. Yes.
- 15:19Speaker 2: Bear, I was saying that on the show.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Like, even the Niners who got there a week before
- 15:23Speaker 1: the game. I went to Australia. I was there for
- 15:26Speaker 1: three weeks. You have been.
- 15:27Speaker 2: I've come back as well. Obviously, I'm here. I'm doing
- 15:30Speaker 2: the show with you.
- 15:31Speaker 1: It takes more than a week for your body to
- 15:33Speaker 1: adjust to the time difference.
- 15:35Speaker 2: It just does. Not even a week. After a week,
- 15:38Speaker 2: I was still falling asleep in the middle of the afternoon.
- 15:40Speaker 2: You know?
- 15:41Speaker 5: Yeah. Exactly right. Even though I'd love to go up
- 15:44Speaker 5: there and love to do those nice coastal walks.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Yes. Maybe the Rams aren't as good as we thought
- 15:49Speaker 2: they were going to be. How about that?
- 15:50Speaker 5: Oh, there is also that possibility.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:53Speaker 5: Talked about it as well. Last year, we were talking
- 15:55Speaker 5: about it this time. Is Matthew Stafford ever going to play?
- 15:58Speaker 5: Is his back going to be okay? And it was
- 16:00Speaker 5: just an assumption this year that that was going to
- 16:03Speaker 5: be the case. Oh, he was going to be fine.
- 16:05Speaker 5: And Puka had a disastrous offseason. Devontae Adams is a
- 16:11Speaker 5: year older. there's no guarantee that Miles Garrett and Aaron Donald,
- 16:16Speaker 5: when they come back, they're going to be the players
- 16:17Speaker 5: that they, that they like. Why not?
- 16:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Why not? I hope Aaron Donald retires. He saw the
- 16:27Speaker 2: game last night.
- 16:27Speaker 1: He's like, I don't want to be a part of
- 16:30Speaker 1: that team. Are you excited for the NFL this weekend?
- 16:36Speaker 1: I know college is your passion.
- 16:37Speaker 2: You love it. But are you excited for the NFL Sunday?
- 16:40Speaker 5: I am. I am excited to, to go all in
- 16:44Speaker 5: on my survivor contest with the Los Angeles Chargers and
- 16:48Speaker 5: get absolutely burned.
- 16:49Speaker 2: I'm looking forward to that. You seem experienced on this front.
- 16:57Speaker 5: I've been someone who's gone out week one with the
- 17:00Speaker 5: Bengals 11 straight years, it seems. I couldn't go Bengals
- 17:04Speaker 5: this week. I'm excited to see someone extract revenge on
- 17:08Speaker 5: the Jets in the opening week of the season for
- 17:11Speaker 5: the second straight year. Last year, it was Aaron Rodgers
- 17:13Speaker 5: and the Steelers. This week it's going to be Robert
- 17:15Speaker 5: Sala and the god-awful-looking Tennessee Titans.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Before we get to your picks here and what you
- 17:24Speaker 1: like for the weekend, both college and the NFL, what
- 17:27Speaker 1: did you make here of– I thought the bigger story
- 17:31Speaker 1: from the Clemson-LSU game was not that LSU was so
- 17:34Speaker 1: overwhelming there. It was that Clemson has fallen so far
- 17:39Speaker 1: so quickly– That Dabo Swinney, I have to think his
- 17:43Speaker 1: days are numbered. He'll make the season probably. The buyout
- 17:46Speaker 1: is ridiculous. But I just, that was my thought. Man, Clemson,
- 17:51Speaker 1: four years ago, was one of the premier programs in
- 17:55Speaker 1: college football. And now they're a punchline, Bear.
- 17:59Speaker 5: And you said four years ago. And what happened within
- 18:03Speaker 5: that window? The sport completely changed. It's now a pay-for-play system. portal,
- 18:10Speaker 5: NIL type situation. That is something that Clemson has not
- 18:14Speaker 5: adapted to. You've seen the rise of the Indianas and
- 18:17Speaker 5: the SMUs in this era and the fall of some
- 18:21Speaker 5: of these teams, whether it's in the SEC or Clemson
- 18:24Speaker 5: teams that have not really adapted to this era. Like,
- 18:28Speaker 5: I wonder if deep down inside, look, I know Dabo
- 18:31Speaker 5: is a coach and he wants to coach and he
- 18:33Speaker 5: loves Clemson and he loves football, loves his team. I
- 18:36Speaker 5: wonder if it does go south if there's a small
- 18:39Speaker 5: part of them, that's like, you know what, why do
- 18:43Speaker 5: I want to deal with this garbage anymore? I don't
- 18:45Speaker 5: want to have to pay these fine guys to pay
- 18:50Speaker 5: in the portal and worry about re-recruiting the guys that
- 18:52Speaker 5: are on my team. And it's interesting that last week
- 18:57Speaker 5: you had the example of modern college football or the
- 19:00Speaker 5: three-year era of college football. And then you got Clemson
- 19:04Speaker 5: who building from within your recruiting base, playing guys that,
- 19:08Speaker 5: kind of were on your roster, didn't have a ton
- 19:10Speaker 5: of live game reps. And then you got LSU on
- 19:13Speaker 5: the other side who was bringing in guys from other teams,
- 19:17Speaker 5: but all they've been doing is playing for the last
- 19:19Speaker 5: couple of years. And it clearly made it to Clemson
- 19:21Speaker 5: is so far behind the eight ball, certainly at the
- 19:24Speaker 5: quarterback position. I think the receivers are good. I think,
- 19:27Speaker 5: I think Wesco and those guys that they have receiver
- 19:29Speaker 5: are good, but yeah, it will be interesting to see
- 19:32Speaker 5: what happens if, They lose to Miami in a fashion
- 19:36Speaker 5: that they potentially could lose to now. No one's going
- 19:38Speaker 5: to think Clemson has a chance. And of course, that
- 19:40Speaker 5: means Clemson will rise up and play well in Death
- 19:43Speaker 5: Valley that night. But Clemson has an idle week the
- 19:46Speaker 5: week after that. And you just got to wonder maybe
- 19:48Speaker 5: if that could be potentially a week where Dabo and
- 19:52Speaker 5: the administration come to and be like, all right, maybe
- 19:55Speaker 5: we negotiate something. Maybe it happens at the end of
- 19:58Speaker 5: the year. It looked like, I don't want to say
- 20:05Speaker 5: a Mac team because Western Michigan went out and dominated
- 20:07Speaker 5: Michigan and held the ball for 40 minutes last week.
- 20:09Speaker 5: But they looked like a group of five type team
- 20:13Speaker 5: compared to what LSU looked like last week.
- 20:15Speaker 2: Yeah, it was pretty bad.
- 20:16Speaker 1: Mikey, do you take everything, anything that Bear says on
- 20:19Speaker 1: this show, do you bet it?
- 20:21Speaker 5: Yes.
- 20:21Speaker 2: Do you ever fade them? Why would I do something
- 20:24Speaker 2: like that? Because I would like you to have your
- 20:27Speaker 2: own mind.
- 20:28Speaker 1: I'm just wondering if you disagree with Bear, do you
- 20:30Speaker 1: go opposite of Bear or do you just stay away.
- 20:32Speaker 2: From the game? I'll say this.
- 20:34Speaker 3: If I feel strongly about a game and Bear tells
- 20:37Speaker 3: me to bet the other way, I probably don't bet it.
- 20:40Speaker 2: Right.
- 20:41Speaker 3: But very rarely do I have a feeling on a
- 20:44Speaker 3: game Bear has a feeling on.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Okay. No, this is how I do it.
- 20:50Speaker 5: Right.
- 20:50Speaker 2: That's why I was asking.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Because what I do is if Bear likes it, generally
- 20:54Speaker 1: I'll take the game. But if he doesn't, if I
- 20:57Speaker 1: like the opposite of what Bear is telling me, I
- 20:59Speaker 1: just stay away from the game.
- 21:01Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying?
- 21:02Speaker 4: That's how you have to do it.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Right.
- 21:04Speaker 5: Yes.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 21:06Speaker 5: That's how I am as well. It's like, okay, someone
- 21:10Speaker 5: I respect likes the other side. I'm not saying that
- 21:13Speaker 5: I don't respect either of you two guys, by the way.
- 21:16Speaker 5: You're supposed to laugh.
- 21:18Speaker 4: I got you, Bear.
- 21:19Speaker 2: I got it.
- 21:20Speaker 5: But it's something where.
- 21:23Speaker 2: My laughter was late.
- 21:25Speaker 5: We're always learning, like, what do they see that I
- 21:29Speaker 5: don't see? Am I looking at this through a different prism?
- 21:33Speaker 5: And you're right. I will not necessarily... And that's why
- 21:36Speaker 5: we talk it out, right? We talk it out on Fridays,
- 21:38Speaker 5: I guess?
- 21:39Speaker 2: Yes.
- 21:41Speaker 5: I like getting different perspectives. And, yeah, if someone's gung-ho,
- 21:45Speaker 5: maybe I won't play a game because someone's bringing up
- 21:49Speaker 5: a very prudent point.
- 21:51Speaker 2: Yes.
- 21:52Speaker 1: Shame on me for getting away from that segment that
- 21:55Speaker 1: we started last year. We haven't continued this year. We
- 21:58Speaker 1: will continue it next week. I am promising you. I
- 22:01Speaker 1: am promising the audience. We will talk it out with
- 22:03Speaker 1: our sports pages in hand and figure out who all
- 22:07Speaker 1: three of us like.
- 22:07Speaker 2: What do you got, Mikey?
- 22:09Speaker 3: I was just going to say, as far as this
- 22:11Speaker 3: week goes– I don't like betting NFL games in week
- 22:15Speaker 3: one in terms of against the spread because we really.
- 22:18Speaker 2: Don't know who anybody is.
- 22:19Speaker 3: But I will bet so many unders this week because
- 22:23Speaker 3: everybody wants to see the high-flying offenses. They never show
- 22:27Speaker 3: up in week one. I'm already 2-0 betting unders. I
- 22:30Speaker 3: will probably bet a lot of that. But I will
- 22:32Speaker 3: listen to Bear if he likes some spreads.
- 22:35Speaker 5: I do not. I wanted to try my, but you
- 22:39Speaker 5: have to, I have to pick five games and circa
- 22:46Speaker 5: millions this week for the, and like, like I wanted
- 22:49Speaker 5: to get there so badly with the Atlanta Falcons getting
- 22:53Speaker 5: points against the Steelers, because I don't think the Steelers
- 22:57Speaker 5: are very good. But now I, Is Cooper Rush really
- 23:02Speaker 5: going to be the quarterback?
- 23:04Speaker 2: Yes. Yes.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Taylor said if Cooper Rush is playing quarterback in that game,
- 23:07Speaker 1: he won't watch that game.
- 23:08Speaker 2: Yes.
- 23:09Speaker 5: Like, how do you bet that? Why?
- 23:16Speaker 4: Cooper Rush isn't better than Tua Tungwailoa.
- 23:19Speaker 2: At this point.
- 23:20Speaker 1: No, because the one thing you're interested in in the Falcons,
- 23:22Speaker 1: as it relates to the Falcons, is if Tua can
- 23:24Speaker 1: turn his career around, right?
- 23:26Speaker 2: That's what you want to see. I'm with Bear, though.
- 23:28Speaker 2: I don't want to bet on Cooper Rush.
- 23:30Speaker 5: The only NFL bet that I have made this week
- 23:36Speaker 5: is I played the commanders team total under 19 and
- 23:40Speaker 5: a half. I don't know how they score against that
- 23:44Speaker 5: Eagles defense with the offensive line and shambles. I don't
- 23:48Speaker 5: know about their wide receiver depth. Jaden Daniels is someone
- 23:51Speaker 5: who one hit and he could be done for the game.
- 23:55Speaker 5: He could, He can tweak a calf or a hamstring
- 23:58Speaker 5: just walking under center for the first play of the game. But, yeah,
- 24:02Speaker 5: I don't know. Maybe it's two touchdowns and two field goals,
- 24:06Speaker 5: but I was going to say I don't know how
- 24:07Speaker 5: they score three touchdowns. You can say whatever you want
- 24:11Speaker 5: about Jalen Hurts and Sirianni and the coordinator on the
- 24:15Speaker 5: offensive side of the ball, but that defense is filthy.
- 24:18Speaker 1: I'm with Mikey. It's a dangerous game the first Sunday.
- 24:22Speaker 1: You've got to watch these teams play. If you based
- 24:24Speaker 1: it on preseason hype, you would have pounded the Rams
- 24:26Speaker 1: last night.
- 24:29Speaker 2: It's ridiculous.
- 24:31Speaker 1: All right, so Bear, who do we like here? Let's
- 24:32Speaker 1: start with college. What are you looking at for the
- 24:34Speaker 1: college slate here? You're in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Oklahoma. Michigan
- 24:38Speaker 1: is plus five and a half. I'm tempted to say
- 24:40Speaker 1: Michigan's going to win that game outright, by the way.
- 24:44Speaker 5: You know how I think. Mikey knows how I think.
- 24:47Speaker 5: Like every instinct with the betting instinct, the gambler, the
- 24:51Speaker 5: handicapping instinct in me, says the only side in this
- 24:54Speaker 5: game you can play is Michigan plus the points because
- 24:58Speaker 5: there isn't a single solitary soul out there that wants
- 25:02Speaker 5: any part of Michigan on Saturday afternoon. It's like there
- 25:06Speaker 5: wasn't a single solitary soul out that wanted any part
- 25:09Speaker 5: of Florida State on Monday night, and the Noles probably
- 25:13Speaker 5: should have won the game, but they're so inept and
- 25:14Speaker 5: so terrible that they couldn't take the gift that SMU
- 25:18Speaker 5: was giving them. Now, the one thing that does hold
- 25:22Speaker 5: me back from taking Michigan plus the points here is
- 25:25Speaker 5: just I don't know how we can expect Bryce Underwood
- 25:28Speaker 5: to be any better than what he was. Like last
- 25:32Speaker 5: year in this game, he was at 11-24, I think,
- 25:34Speaker 5: in the game in Norman. I don't know. The Michigan
- 25:39Speaker 5: offensive line was so bad. I would expect maybe just
- 25:43Speaker 5: a lot more running from Bryce Underwood to try and
- 25:47Speaker 5: just use his athleticism and just kind of vamp. Maybe
- 25:50Speaker 5: that's the way to go. But I don't know. Push
- 25:54Speaker 5: comes to shove. If you're in one of those contests,
- 25:58Speaker 5: taking Michigan would be the only thing.
- 26:00Speaker 2: That I could do here. But it seems like you
- 26:03Speaker 2: don't love the game. So what are you looking at?
- 26:05Speaker 2: I don't. I don't.
- 26:08Speaker 5: I like Mississippi State getting one and a half. Minnesota,
- 26:14Speaker 5: I love Kamario Taylor. I think he is a stud quarterback.
- 26:18Speaker 5: He's going to be a guy who a lot of
- 26:20Speaker 5: teams are going to be going after in the portal
- 26:23Speaker 5: at the end of the year, trying to get him
- 26:25Speaker 5: to transfer. Really good dual threat guy. Minnesota's a team
- 26:29Speaker 5: that a lot of people are high on in the
- 26:31Speaker 5: Big Ten. I don't think Mississippi State or Minnesota are
- 26:35Speaker 5: eight or nine win teams, but It's kind of a
- 26:38Speaker 5: fulcrum type game. It's a coin flip game on their
- 26:40Speaker 5: schedule that could really elevate them to a better bowl.
- 26:43Speaker 5: If you go back since 2018, Minnesota has been in
- 26:47Speaker 5: 10 games at home where the spread has been plus three,
- 26:51Speaker 5: minus three, either way within that window. And they've lost
- 26:54Speaker 5: eight of the 10 outright. I'm a P.J. Fleck guy,
- 26:57Speaker 5: so I don't think it's necessarily a reflection on him.
- 27:01Speaker 5: Maybe they just have a knack of losing these coin
- 27:04Speaker 5: flippy type games. So I like Mississippi State. plus the
- 27:08Speaker 5: one and a half. I like Texas to beat Ohio State.
- 27:11Speaker 5: Instead of laying the one and a half, I just
- 27:13Speaker 5: play the money line.
- 27:14Speaker 2: Really?
- 27:15Speaker 5: Yeah, just take the potential for a 24-23 game or
- 27:19Speaker 5: an overtime game kind of out of it. I hearken back.
- 27:24Speaker 5: You're using all sorts of great words today, Andrew.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Hearken back, yes.
- 27:28Speaker 4: In that setting, it fits.
- 27:30Speaker 2: It feels like you should be holding a lantern.
- 27:36Speaker 5: A few years ago, But Sark and Texas hosted Alabama,
- 27:41Speaker 5: lost a close game. And then the following year, they
- 27:45Speaker 5: went to Tuscaloosa and won relatively easily. So I think
- 27:49Speaker 5: there was some parallels that you could potentially draw there.
- 27:51Speaker 5: I know he hasn't been great in the top 10 matchups,
- 27:55Speaker 5: two and six at Texas, but I think this Texas team...
- 27:59Speaker 5: is better than the team that they had last year.
- 28:02Speaker 5: I'm not sure the Ohio State team is better than
- 28:05Speaker 5: the one last year that beat Texas in the season
- 28:08Speaker 5: opener on their home field in Arches for a start.
- 28:11Speaker 5: I worry about the Ohio State offensive line. The lasting
- 28:15Speaker 5: impression I have of Ohio State from last year was
- 28:18Speaker 5: those tackles getting absolutely abused by Indiana and Miami in
- 28:23Speaker 5: the college football playoff. They're going to be going against
- 28:26Speaker 5: Colin Simmons and Biles. and a Texas improved Texas front.
- 28:31Speaker 5: I don't, not sure they're going to have a lot
- 28:34Speaker 5: of time for Julian saying to get the ball out
- 28:36Speaker 5: to those weapons. Can they run? We will see, but
- 28:41Speaker 5: I do like Texas on the money line. Okay. I
- 28:44Speaker 5: like a couple of totals. I like FIU Buffalo under
- 28:49Speaker 5: 47 and a half. Wow.
- 28:52Speaker 1: You got the FIU cover backdoor last week, right?
- 28:55Speaker 2: Yes.
- 28:57Speaker 5: Their defense played awesome, but they couldn't stop the ball
- 29:00Speaker 5: over or else it probably would have been a lot
- 29:02Speaker 5: easy cover. But Buffalo's a team that hung on against
- 29:05Speaker 5: Albany last week, you know, the goal line stand. I
- 29:08Speaker 5: don't think they're going to be able to move the
- 29:09Speaker 5: ball very well. So it feels like an under. I
- 29:11Speaker 5: thought about laying 10.5 with the Pantera again this week,
- 29:16Speaker 5: but couldn't get there. I think the under is a
- 29:18Speaker 5: better play. And I played Duke-Illinois under 51.5. Wow. Yeah,
- 29:24Speaker 5: Duke's offense is basically Shepard running the ball. Duke should
- 29:28Speaker 5: have beaten Illinois last year. Illinois did not. They basically
- 29:31Speaker 5: had a third of their offense on two plays last week.
- 29:34Speaker 5: So i uh under 51 and a half seems like
- 29:36Speaker 5: a good play and then i'm gonna hold my nose
- 29:39Speaker 5: and take an ugly ugly dog.
- 29:42Speaker 1: Wow a hold my nose game this is very exciting
- 29:45Speaker 1: should we hold our noses while you'll do it i
- 29:46Speaker 1: mean what do you think i'm gonna hold my nose.
- 29:48Speaker 5: I'm gonna hold on i'm gonna take temple plus 24
- 29:51Speaker 5: and a half against oh yeah those owls Penn State
- 29:57Speaker 5: was awesome last week, but I'm going to take Temple
- 30:00Speaker 5: here at a big number.
- 30:02Speaker 2: All right. Can you hold your nose very tightly and
- 30:04Speaker 2: say that again?
- 30:06Speaker 5: I'm going to take Temple plus 24 and a half
- 30:09Speaker 5: against Penn State up with a big win against Marshall.
- 30:12Speaker 5: I think Casey can stay within that number.
- 30:17Speaker 2: I think we should do that. The hold your nose
- 30:19Speaker 2: game of the week. Yeah.
- 30:22Speaker 5: Yeah, next week we can talk it out and we
- 30:26Speaker 5: can hold a vote while we're talking it out.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Yes.
- 30:28Speaker 1: Harking back, and I've never heard anyone on this planet say,
- 30:32Speaker 1: I'm a P.J.
- 30:33Speaker 2: Fleck guy.
- 30:36Speaker 5: You don't like rowing the boat? Come on now.
- 30:39Speaker 2: I mean, I do. I've never heard anyone claim to
- 30:42Speaker 2: be a P.J. Fleck guy. I had to announce it
- 30:45Speaker 2: to the world, you know? P.J.
- 30:47Speaker 5: Is my guy. That was a fun game day a
- 30:50Speaker 5: few years back.
- 30:53Speaker 1: So how do you navigate week one of the NFL
- 30:55Speaker 1: bear before we get you out of here?
- 30:56Speaker 5: I am similar to Mikey. Like I, if I have
- 31:00Speaker 5: to play these games, like I do in contest, I
- 31:03Speaker 5: tend to try and go opposite of the public sentiment
- 31:08Speaker 5: in a lot of these games. Like a lot of
- 31:10Speaker 5: people think that the bears are going to put up
- 31:14Speaker 5: a billion points and they like Carolina would be an
- 31:17Speaker 5: attractive side to me this week.
- 31:19Speaker 2: Right.
- 31:19Speaker 5: Yeah. The Dolphins would be an attractive side to me
- 31:24Speaker 5: this week, even though I don't want to say our
- 31:30Speaker 5: friends at FanDuel because I don't see anything in the
- 31:33Speaker 5: bank account from your friends at FanDuel. So your friends
- 31:38Speaker 5: at FanDuel take some of their money in this one.
- 31:43Speaker 5: The Dolphins, how are they winning five games? You can
- 31:48Speaker 5: do the adjusted season win totals there.
- 31:50Speaker 2: Right.
- 31:51Speaker 5: I bet under four and a half wins, I laid 170,
- 31:55Speaker 5: which seems a little steep, but I don't mind paying
- 31:59Speaker 5: a tax on adding an extra win. to basically have
- 32:04Speaker 5: it in my pocket. Four wins, maybe you can luck
- 32:07Speaker 5: into a team sitting guys at the end of the year.
- 32:10Speaker 2: Right, play the Jets twice.
- 32:11Speaker 5: Exactly, but you look at their schedule. How are they
- 32:14Speaker 5: getting to five? Jeff Halfley has come out and said,
- 32:17Speaker 5: this year is not about one loss record. It's about
- 32:20Speaker 5: player development. That's telling you right there that they know.
- 32:24Speaker 5: I don't think the Raiders are very good, though, either.
- 32:31Speaker 1: There's no way Halfley is saying that without Stephen Ross's approval,
- 32:34Speaker 1: by the way. He's just not coming out and saying, hey,
- 32:38Speaker 1: I'm hired as an NFL head coach. It's my first job.
- 32:40Speaker 1: I'm here to develop players.
- 32:43Speaker 5: We're going to go 2-15, but winning is not the goal. Yes.
- 32:48Speaker 2: All right, Bear. Very efficient with your picks today. We
- 32:51Speaker 2: enjoyed it. Thank you. It was, Mike.
- 32:56Speaker 1: He just gave you a hold your nose game. He
- 32:58Speaker 1: gave you five college games, I believe, and he gave
- 33:01Speaker 1: you a strategy for week one in the NFL.
- 33:03Speaker 2: I love it. You write it all down, Mike?
- 33:05Speaker 5: Of course.
- 33:05Speaker 2: All right. Take a picture and send it over to me. Bear,
- 33:10Speaker 2: thank you. Check him out.
- 33:10Speaker 1: Bear Betts, wherever you get your podcast, will be on
- 33:12Speaker 1: the big new kickoff as well. Michigan and Oklahoma, he's
- 33:15Speaker 1: staying at a graduate hotel. He's spending all of Fox's
- 33:18Speaker 1: money on the mini bar.
- 33:20Speaker 2: We'll talk to you, buddy. Take care, guys.
