- 0:00Hello, welcome back to Scripture Central.
- 0:02I'm Lynn Hilton Wilson and this is John W Welch with our come,
- 0:05follow me in second Nephi chapter 678910 and it's a two
- 0:11day sermon by Jake. Nephi has asked Jacob to record
- 0:16this huge six section of space in his scripture, and as part of
- 0:21that, Nephi also asks Jacob to quote specifically some verses
- 0:25on Isaiah. So let's start with Chapter 6.
- 0:33OK, Lynn, would you say that this is easy reading or hard
- 0:37reading? You know all a second Nephi is
- 0:40for a mature spirit who is seeking to understand a deeper
- 0:46connection with our Savior as our Redeemer.
- 0:50I think Chapter 9 is probably some of the best messages we
- 0:54have on the Atonement of Jesus Christ in all Scripture.
- 0:57So this is some of my favorite reading, but it requires a
- 1:03little more than someone who's looking for a storyline in speed
- 1:06reading. And I think this material is
- 1:08about as dense as it gets in terms of profound doctrine,
- 1:14references to aspects of the plan of salvation, the
- 1:18covenants, the temple. And it's interesting to me that
- 1:21this may be Jacob's first really major public sermon as the high
- 1:27priest in the new temple there in the city of Nephi.
- 1:32You know, this is interesting that you said the high priest,
- 1:35because we just finished the temple last week in chapter 5
- 1:38that's built. And he said 30 years have passed
- 1:42since we left Jerusalem and now 40 years have passed.
- 1:45And Jacob was born sometime in that first eight years of
- 1:49leaving Jerusalem. So he would have been over 30.
- 1:51And 30 is the age where a priest can begin serving in the Temple.
- 1:55He's worked in the temple, but probably not as the high priest.
- 1:58I'm sure they're formalizing and adopting things.
- 2:01Who has the right to build a temple?
- 2:03We talked about this a little bit last week, but starting in
- 2:06chapter six we learn that they had the right to build the
- 2:10Temple, even though they weren't from Aaron, even though they're
- 2:12not from the Levitical tribe, because of the Holy Order.
- 2:16Behold my beloved brethren, which he repeats over and over.
- 2:20I love this as the beloved brethren sermon.
- 2:23I Jacob, having been called of God and ordained after the
- 2:26manner of His Holy Order, and having been consecrated.
- 2:32OK, I think He is set apart, He sustained.
- 2:35And the Holy Order is what? It would be the Melchizedek
- 2:39Order of the High Priesthood. Yeah, and and they don't have to
- 2:42name it. It's not Melchizedek, you know.
- 2:44We refer to it that way, but it's God's order.
- 2:47Well, it's higher than the ironic order.
- 2:49And so this holy order of priesthood will be something
- 2:54that Alma will talk a lot about in Alma chapter 13.
- 2:58But this little phrase, it's not mentioned very often.
- 3:01As you point out, Holy Order, we can kind of skip right over
- 3:05that. But it's important for Jacob now
- 3:08to be a full-fledged high priest and running the temple according
- 3:13to all of its procedural and administrative and spiritual
- 3:17requirements. And I think that that's the way
- 3:21we run a temple. You can't just build a temple
- 3:24and declare yourself all right now I'm the the high priest.
- 3:28It's all done according to the order of God.
- 3:31Well, and this order is interesting because in the Book
- 3:34of Mormon when we talk about the priesthood, not very often, but
- 3:38we talk about the holy order or ordination or consecrated or
- 3:43even the gifts of the priesthood, such as the oath and
- 3:46the covenant that the the power of the priesthood, the commands,
- 3:49saturates the Book of Mormon. And this is our first reference
- 3:53to the holy Order. But if we look at this broader
- 3:57definition for priesthood, looking for callings and offices
- 4:01and the power of God, the Book of Mormon is filled hundreds and
- 4:06hundreds of references. I've even done the research,
- 4:09divide them up by chapter, and these segments that refer to the
- 4:13priesthood start in First Ephite and go clear through Moroni.
- 4:18And it is fascinating to see how many times they are calling on
- 4:23the power of God in the Book of Mormon.
- 4:26I think this is really important what you're saying, because we
- 4:30kind of take priesthood as a given.
- 4:34But for Nephi to establish now the holy order of the priesthood
- 4:40that will be followed throughout the Book of Mormon sets a
- 4:43fundamental pattern which will of course be replicated and
- 4:48implemented by Joseph Smith in sections of the Doctrine and
- 4:52Covenants like Section 20 and Section 84, Section One O 7.
- 4:57And we've got them and others. But we we don't take it upon
- 5:03ourselves to officiate in the in these ordinances.
- 5:09As Hebrews says, no man take it upon himself, save he is called
- 5:13of God by prophecy and by the laying on of hands.
- 5:16But my research on the priesthood in the Book of
- 5:18Mormon, it is beyond those who are ordained in that call to
- 5:22include, as Joseph Smith did, the gifts of the Spirit and the
- 5:26blessings of the Spirit, because you cannot receive the gift of
- 5:30the Holy Ghost until you have these other blessings.
- 5:32And I see the power of godliness under the umbrella of priesthood
- 5:38just from beginning to end in the Book of Mormon.
- 5:46But before we get to Chapter 9, we need to look at chapters 7:00
- 5:50and 8:00 for a minute where Jacob quotes Isaiah 4922 through
- 5:57Isaiah 52 two. I'm fascinated that so many of
- 6:01these verses from Isaiah that he quotes are actually referring to
- 6:07our Messiah as the Redeemer as the Anointed 1.
- 6:12Jacob would have been especially attracted to, and maybe Nephi
- 6:15asked him to read these because you have the only time in the
- 6:20Book of Mormon that Jesus is called the Mighty One of Jacob.
- 6:25And I think Jacob must have loved that that the Redeemer,
- 6:31Jesus Christ is the Mighty One of Jacob, and how reassuring
- 6:36that would be to have a personal connection.
- 6:39There also, I think we have in these chapters, in chapter 6,
- 6:44verse 17, the promise that God would protect his people.
- 6:50The mighty God shall deliver his covenant people.
- 6:53And I think how fragile this little society, this little
- 6:57group of followers of Nephi, must have felt.
- 7:02And to know that they're right off the bat that they have the
- 7:07promise that God will protect them.
- 7:10In second Nephi chapter 6, Jacob describes that he's had a vision
- 7:15and he points out different things in this vision, and one
- 7:17of them is that of Jesus's death and verse 8:00 and 9:00 and
- 7:2410:00 I'll talk about the crucifixion and he's going to be
- 7:28smitten and then the people are scattered after that.
- 7:31And then he goes on in Chapter 7 to quote the Isaiah chapters
- 7:36that describe the same thing. And as we look at 7, verse six,
- 7:41you'll recognize this, I think Jack from Handel's Messiah.
- 7:44I gave my back to the smiter and to my cheeks to them that
- 7:48plucketh out the hair I hid not my face from shame and spitting,
- 7:54But the Lord God will help me. Therefore I will not be
- 7:57confounded. You know, he he had this vision
- 7:59himself that he describes in chapter 6, and now he giving a
- 8:04witness of it from Isaiah, the same thing, a second witness
- 8:08again being described. I can just see Jacob striving to
- 8:12add another voice to his on this message.
- 8:15We have got to prepare for this day.
- 8:17But remember too that Nephi has suggested that neph, that Jacob
- 8:21should read these chapters. Yes, he did.
- 8:24That's why he's seeing him in his talk.
- 8:25I wonder if Jacob hadn't already been discussing with Nephi some
- 8:31of these things Nephi could have said.
- 8:33Jacob, what you have seen goes beyond what I mentioned back in
- 8:38my vision in first Nephi Chapter 11.
- 8:41But it was clear that to me that something would happen to the
- 8:45Savior. And now you're seeing this and
- 8:48it was spelled out in Isaiah. Maybe Nephi and Jacob had been
- 8:53doing some scripture study together and ran across this and
- 8:56now understand it better and that will then lead to even
- 8:59further information that Jacob will get during the night
- 9:03between these two days of his speech.
- 9:06Yeah, he is a visionary man and he has visions that are reported
- 9:10in chapter 6 and visions that are reported in Chapter 9 and
- 9:1310. I I am really touched by the
- 9:16idea, though, that these visions probably came from the scripture
- 9:19study, and those two verses in Isaiah 50 are so remote and
- 9:24obscure that the people that have the New Testament didn't
- 9:27even realize that they were the Messiah.
- 9:28And yet Jacob did, and the Lord expanded it for him.
- 9:33I hope the Lord expands our scripture study.
- 9:35Exactly. Yeah.
- 9:36Yeah. One other thing that I think is
- 9:44present in these passages. I've enjoyed looking at all of
- 9:48the different names that are used for Jesus Christ throughout
- 9:51the New Testament. There are a lot of them, but
- 9:55there are some that are unique to Jacob and he as a priest you
- 10:01might understand why he uses some of these.
- 10:05A unique name that Jacob uses is Jesus is the Mighty God.
- 10:11He likes the fact that that Jesus is God for one thing, but
- 10:17he is mighty. He then talks about three ways
- 10:21in which God uses this might. He calls him at one point the
- 10:25Maker and also the Great Creator.
- 10:30Those are the ones that are unique to Jacob.
- 10:33And when you think of what the Temple is based on, it's a model
- 10:37of the creation and how we go through the steps of creation
- 10:42and the Fall. And so if Jacob is giving this
- 10:44sermon at the temple and as a newly called priest.
- 10:48And He will then call the Lord by this name, giving primacy to
- 10:55His role as the Creator, the one who comes and creates this
- 11:00earth. God is creating in a way, but
- 11:05through the work of Jesus Christ.
- 11:08And I'm really touched by, again, the emphasis on Jesus as
- 11:12our Redeemer. You know, we think of our say,
- 11:15as we mentioned, these names of the Lord.
- 11:16I, you know, the 101 or however many there are in the Book of
- 11:20Mormon. He chooses those of a redemptive
- 11:23nature. And it's it to me this is the
- 11:27whole point of the sacrament. It's not.
- 11:29Yes, he's a Good Shepherd. Yes, he's the kind way.
- 11:33Yes, he is the Living Water. But his redemptive nature is the
- 11:38message of the sacrament. It's the message of the
- 11:40atonement. And he's leading up to the
- 11:42greatest part of the sermon, which is will be the atonement.
- 11:45But even in chapter 8, when he's quoting Isaiah, he's quoting the
- 11:49redemptive verses. Look at verse 11, Chapter 8.
- 11:53Therefore the redeemed of the Lord shall return and come with
- 11:56singing to Zion and everlasting joy.
- 11:59You know, Jack, when I have fallen on my knees in
- 12:01repentance, and I have felt forgiveness from the Lord, have
- 12:04felt redeemed, that's how I feel.
- 12:06I feel this way. And you felt joy.
- 12:08And what else does he say? And holiness.
- 12:11And holiness again, Jacob is so interested in the holy becoming,
- 12:16Holy becoming pure. To feel the joy is is of course
- 12:20a wonderful, exhilarating thing. But to feel the holiness.
- 12:25To feel that you're clean and that you're worthy.
- 12:27And that's the whole idea of the temple.
- 12:30It is the altar. The the great and last sacrifice
- 12:33will be taken our sins, and we then can be cleansed.
- 12:38And when, when we experience this, carry on with verse 11,
- 12:43that joy and holiness shall be upon their heads, and they shall
- 12:47obtain gladness and joy, sorrow and mourning shall flee away.
- 12:54And he's still quoting Isaiah. I know, but how relevant that
- 12:57is? It's not just randomly selected.
- 13:01Again, Nephi has said. Jacob, why don't you read this?
- 13:04This will be a perfect choice for your.
- 13:06Your sermon I love verse 12. I am he meaning God, Jehovah.
- 13:12Here I am he that comforteth you.
- 13:15Behold, who art thou? And thou should just be afraid
- 13:18of man. And who shall die?
- 13:20And the Son of man, who shall be like unto grass.
- 13:23And I don't think he's referring to Jesus there as the Son of
- 13:25Man. That's just the Son of humanity.
- 13:27Yeah, so he's saying let's keep our focus on God and not be so
- 13:31worried about peer pressure, about fashion, about things of
- 13:34the world. Right now it's not even
- 13:36politically correct to talk about Christianity.
- 13:38And yet we've been told that as a Christian, we need to speak of
- 13:41Christ. Chapter 9 verse one begins with
- 13:50the overview. Now behold, my beloved brother,
- 13:54I have read these things. Why has he read these Isaiah
- 13:58passages? He tells us in verse one that ye
- 14:02might know concerning the covenants of the Lord, that he
- 14:06has covenanted with all the House of Israel.
- 14:09And he goes not just through the time of the Savior's life and
- 14:12death, but in verse two he says. And that they shall be restored
- 14:16to the true church and fold of God, that they shall be gathered
- 14:20home to the lands. Because I think in their memory
- 14:24Israel has just been destroyed by the Assyrians 100 years
- 14:27before, and by the Babylonians right now.
- 14:30What's already happened? They happened before.
- 14:33And so he's saying no. They're going to be gathered to
- 14:35the lands of their inheritance, to the lands of their promise in
- 14:39verse 6, as the death has passed upon all men to fulfill the
- 14:42merciful plan of our great Creator.
- 14:44You already mentioned that wonderful name of the Lord.
- 14:47There there must needs to be a power of resurrection.
- 14:53So this is our first reference to that ideology in the Book of
- 14:57Mormon. The resurrection must needs come
- 14:58upon man. This is not something that's in
- 15:00the Old Testament that we have, but it may have been in the
- 15:02brass plates. But he certainly learned it from
- 15:05an Angel or someplace, because he talks about the resurrection
- 15:07quite a bit. He says it must needs come and
- 15:10man by reason of the fall, and the fall came by reason of
- 15:14transgression. Because man became fallen, they
- 15:16were cut off from the presence of the Lord.
- 15:18This is why we need in verse 7 an infinite atonement and it has
- 15:23to be an infinite atonement which is can avoid this
- 15:26corruption, this problem that happens as we become entangled
- 15:31with sin and our bodies are going to grow old and our spirit
- 15:33and our body are connected and so our sins even affect our
- 15:37bodies sometimes and. This is the first time I think
- 15:40that the phrase infinite atonement is used in the Book of
- 15:43Mormon. Now it will be used especially
- 15:46by Alma later on. But it's not a limited
- 15:50atonement, which the Calvinists thought in the 19th century.
- 15:54This is an atonement for everyone.
- 15:57And it's not the kind of atonement that was being
- 16:01performed in the Temple of Solomon, the ancient Israelite.
- 16:05Which had to be repeated over and over.
- 16:08Every every year you had to come back and do the Day of Atonement
- 16:11again. This would be an eternal
- 16:13atonement that will be done once and for all.
- 16:18And why does it have to be eternal?
- 16:21Well, it has to be eternal. Verse 7 says save.
- 16:25It should be an infinite atonement.
- 16:26This corruption could not put on incorruption.
- 16:31What Jacob now is introducing is the idea that this atonement
- 16:34will be an infinite atonement and it can be infinite in an
- 16:39infinite number of ways. And what it will prevent, among
- 16:44other things, during this life or whenever, is the natural
- 16:50inclination for all things to degenerate physical matter?
- 16:55That there is a principle that all things that are material
- 17:00tend to become disorderly, to tend toward chaos.
- 17:06If it weren't for some power holding physical matter
- 17:11together, keeping it from entropy, we would be
- 17:17degenerating all the time. But the atonement holds us
- 17:22together now, not just physically, but also spiritually
- 17:28and and so the power of the atonement is infinite in its
- 17:32reach and time. It's not just something that's
- 17:35going to apply later when we're resurrected, it's operating
- 17:38right now. And in fact, Jacob, as he's
- 17:41talking about this, we're not going to lay down and rot and
- 17:43crumble to Mother Earth. He he's so excited.
- 17:46Oh, the wisdom of God, His mercy, His grace.
- 17:49I mean, I can just see Jacob pleading with them to understand
- 17:53how wonderful this gift is. Do we comprehend it?
- 17:58For behold, the flesh should rise no more our spirits Anyway.
- 18:01He talks then about the devil and our spiritual falling again.
- 18:05And the first parents being beguiled is in verse 9.
- 18:08But in verse 10. Oh how great the goodness of our
- 18:11God. And I know you're going to say
- 18:13something, Jack, because I just read 2O's in a row without you
- 18:17commenting yet. Verse 8 and 10 are our first two
- 18:20though, right? In this section there there are
- 18:23six OSO, the wisdom. That's verse 8.
- 18:27O how great the goodness. Verse 10 O how great the plan,
- 18:32which is our plan of salvation. That we refer to. 10 And then
- 18:36fourth verse 17 O, the greatness and the justice of our God.
- 18:41And then in verse 19, O, the greatness of the mercy of our
- 18:45God, And finally verse 20 Oh, how great the holiness of our
- 18:51God. So you can see those
- 18:54progressions after praising God for his great goodness and
- 18:59mercy, and all that he has done to save all men.
- 19:03And notice in verses 2021, he knoweth all things, saves all
- 19:09men, suffers the pains of all men.
- 19:12So we have in this first section the six OS and now we have the
- 19:16six Alls that are kind of clustered there.
- 19:19Oh, all the suffering pains all. He is a master writer.
- 19:25He's careful with his composition, there's no question
- 19:28about that. After all the times where he
- 19:31says suffered for all men and all the family of Adam, he says
- 19:36in verse 26, For the Atonement satisfieth the demands of
- 19:40justice upon all those who have not the law given unto them,
- 19:46that they are delivered from the awful monster of death and hell.
- 19:49So even if you didn't know of the Bible or you have never even
- 19:52heard of the man named Jesus, those who did not have the law
- 19:55will still be delivered. I mean, this is the most
- 19:58gracious. The Restoration completely opens
- 20:01the door to heaven, more than any other faith tradition I've
- 20:04ever studied. And I think as Latter Day
- 20:05Saints, we recognize this, that if you're not accountable, like
- 20:10if for whatever reason some inability punished children who
- 20:15die who are not accountable, they are delivered because his
- 20:20justice comes upon all who have not the law given to them.
- 20:30And there will now be 10 woes. Now in the temple, the Temple of
- 20:36Solomon, there was a plaque that was posted that had the 10
- 20:42commandments on it. Under Jewish records, we know
- 20:47that there were several of these kinds of plaques that were
- 20:49posted so that men and women would know the laws that pertain
- 20:53to them when they come into the temple.
- 20:56But the 10 commandments were posted right near the door, and
- 21:00they were kind of used as a temple.
- 21:02Recommend thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in
- 21:05vain. Thou shall not have any other
- 21:07God before me, thou shalt. And so on.
- 21:09If you are in violation of any of those, you're asked to go
- 21:13home and kind of work things out or or bring sacrifices to
- 21:19rectify that problem. But it's clear that those are
- 21:22things 10 No Nos. And so the 10 woes here in
- 21:26second ephi Chapter 9. Do they have any?
- 21:30I I don't know. I've never looked at them in
- 21:31light of the 10 commandments. Are they like the 10
- 21:33commandments? Yeah, well when we get down to
- 21:36verse 34, Woe's numbers 678 and nine are related to the 10
- 21:47commandments, but they start before the 10 commandments.
- 21:53Woe unto him that has the law given that has all the
- 21:57commandments, not just the 10, but all of them in verse 30.
- 22:01But woe unto the rich who are rich, as to things of the world.
- 22:05And because they are rich, they despise the poor.
- 22:09And they are. They persecute the meek.
- 22:12And yeah, their treasure is their God.
- 22:15That is our day and age. And the third woe is woe unto
- 22:20the deaf that will not hear. But it's not the deaf, it's the
- 22:23deaf that will. Not.
- 22:25Hear I I love that. Voluntarily, yeah, that will not
- 22:28hear, for they shall perish the the 4th 1:00 Woe unto the blind
- 22:34that will not see, for they shall parachute, seeing that
- 22:38they see but see not. Jesus uses the hearing that they
- 22:42hear, but they hear not seeing, but they see not.
- 22:46They don't really see or understand.
- 22:48Because it's we're all blind to things of the Spirit, is what
- 22:51he's suggesting here, and we need to change.
- 22:54And #5 woe unto the uncircumcised of heart.
- 22:59Which I also think means keep your thoughts intact as well as
- 23:02your emotions and your desires. Absolutely, as it says, for a
- 23:04knowledge of their iniquities shall smite them at the last
- 23:09day. And now we get to the 10
- 23:11commandments ones the 6th. Woe that's right, Woe unto the
- 23:14liar. Thou shalt not bear false
- 23:17witness. And woe unto the murderer.
- 23:20Thou shalt not kill, but notice well under the murderer who
- 23:24deliberately kill us. That's verse 35.
- 23:28Right, but what's that deliberately word?
- 23:29Yeah, that's very important. Put in there for.
- 23:32Because sometimes things happen when it is not deliberate.
- 23:35Right. And it means when you haven't
- 23:37deliberated or pre planned, Does Jacob know of anyone?
- 23:41Who kills? I am sure Nephi has preached
- 23:44this very, very much. Yeah.
- 23:45I'm sure that's why that's added, yeah.
- 23:47So Jacob doesn't want to say just thou shalt not kill.
- 23:51But premeditated. That would put Nephi in A.
- 23:54Talked about. In an unfavorable light and an
- 23:57improper light because the Law of Moses in Exodus 21 provided
- 24:02an explanation. For those who had.
- 24:04For those that don't. We talked about before.
- 24:07And next we'll run to the 30. Six commit whoredoms is that I
- 24:10assume, adulteries. Well, it's more than adultery,
- 24:13isn't it? Adultery under the law of Moses
- 24:18was a married man and a married woman.
- 24:20OK. And whoredoms is any infraction
- 24:22of the law of chastity. Well, it's going to a prostitute
- 24:27and and if the prostitute was not a married woman.
- 24:32It it could, yeah. Fornication is still a whoredom.
- 24:34Yeah, it was not good, but it was done.
- 24:37And it wasn't at the same level as adultery.
- 24:41You commit adultery. The man and the woman who have
- 24:45committed adultery and it takes 2 would be stoned.
- 24:48And. That's under Deuteronomy.
- 24:50I think this is interesting. Yeah, go ahead.
- 24:53Deuteronomy chapter 22, verse 22.
- 24:56Oh yeah, that is interesting. It's a couple problem, right?
- 24:59It's a couple. You can remember it that way.
- 25:02And then verse not, 37 Woe unto those that worship idols, so
- 25:06that goes back to the 10th commandment.
- 25:09And 38 Woe unto all those who die in their sins.
- 25:14And that is so tragic because we can repent.
- 25:19So the positive would be Thou shalt repent, and the woe then
- 25:25naturally comes upon us. If we don't.
- 25:29And why? Well, we'll return to God,
- 25:32behold his face, and we'll remain in our sins.
- 25:37But he takes that all those woes and he now gives us hope again.
- 25:41He's so good about immediately turning in verse 39.
- 25:45My, oh oh, here's another oh, Jack, Oh, my beloved brethren.
- 25:49Now there will be 50 my beloved Brethrens right now.
- 25:54Great. And five is if you like to think
- 25:56of numbers. You have 5 fingers and so the
- 26:01number 5 becomes the number of generosity and kindness.
- 26:05Oh, OK, That's lovely. I didn't know that.
- 26:07OK. And mercy.
- 26:09And so on. And so.
- 26:10And now we have these five Remember, Remember my words, and
- 26:16remember that God will be kind, that he is the keeper of the
- 26:21gate. And Jack, I love this imagery of
- 26:24the Keeper of the Gate. It's not just Peter at the
- 26:27Pearly Gates here when Christ says I am the way.
- 26:30Any time I think of a gate, I like to think of the temple, the
- 26:35separation between the Holy of Holies and the Holy Place.
- 26:37You know this, this veil that in Solomon's Temple was made out of
- 26:40wood like a gate. But when Christ says I am the
- 26:43gate and I am the way and I am the path, you know all of these
- 26:47fit into this. The way that we back return back
- 26:51to the presence of the Lord, that we can partake of the tree
- 26:53of Life without our sins, is by going to the keeper of the Gate.
- 26:58And who is that? Well, that's at the veil, and
- 27:01that is Jehovah, our Savior, Jesus of Nazareth.
- 27:04He employeth no servant there, because there is none other way
- 27:09to save it be by the gate. And then in verse 42 he said,
- 27:15Whosoever knocketh to him, will he open.
- 27:18Now if I've just described this imagery at the temple.
- 27:22And we're at the veil of the temple, and the veil represents
- 27:25the the Lord. The Savior or or Jehovah at this
- 27:29point, yeah, we we cannot enter into His presence unless we are
- 27:33going to knock. I'm so sad about this, but the
- 27:36wise and the learned and the rich and those that are puffed
- 27:39up. This is all verse 42 because of
- 27:42their learning and their wisdom and their riches.
- 27:44Yeah, they whom he despises, you know, we are not going to get
- 27:48there by the things of the world.
- 27:50We are not going to buy our way in.
- 27:52Instead he says, O my beloved brethren, and I like to imagine
- 27:56him actually taking off his garment when he says remember my
- 28:00words, Behold, I take off my garment, my outer cloak here and
- 28:05I shake them before you and I pray to God, Jack, what is he
- 28:08talking about here? What's this taking off?
- 28:10Was there a a practice where they used to take off their
- 28:13outer cloak and shake it? Verses like this indicate that
- 28:17there was a practice of taking off your cloak.
- 28:22Now it's your outer garment. You still have on your tunic,
- 28:26yeah. But the symbolism of shaking the
- 28:31dust, it's like shaking the dust off your feet, but also when you
- 28:35shake off your garment, you are riding yourself of
- 28:40responsibility because you have warned the people.
- 28:43And King Benjamin says the same thing, doesn't he?
- 28:45And that's at the temple. Also so he ends up that verse 44
- 28:49by saying I stand with brightness before him and I'm
- 28:53rid of your blood. So he starts by cleansing by
- 28:57teaching his family and now at the temple he talks another O in
- 29:04verse 45. 45 SO, my beloved brethren, turn away from your
- 29:09sins, and you should shake off the chains of him that would
- 29:14bind you fast. Come unto him who is the rock of
- 29:19your salvation. We do not have to remain in the
- 29:21cage from servitude to Satan. If we can repent, which we can,
- 29:26We can? We can.
- 29:28And oh thou rock of our salvation, it's right out of the
- 29:31psalms again, Temple Psalms. He knew his scripture, and in
- 29:36verse 46 he goes back to that idea of remembering that you
- 29:39mentioned so many times before, remember your awful guilt in
- 29:43perfectness and be constrained to exclaim holy, holy are Thy
- 29:48judgments, O Lord God Almighty. But I know my guilt.
- 29:52I I think this is so important to see these great leaders
- 29:55saying there is a constant need for repentance and turning to
- 30:00our Savior for that cleansing. I really like in this section
- 30:05where there are so many references encouraging us to
- 30:09remember. Remember, remember, you can
- 30:13count how many there are. There.
- 30:14Quite a few. But when we listen carefully to
- 30:19the sacrament prayers, we first and foremost covenant that we
- 30:25will remember Christ always. And if we remember him, of
- 30:32course, that means more than just a.
- 30:35Flashing thought. Yeah, or intellectually
- 30:38remembering that he was there. But to remember also means to
- 30:42obey. In Hebrew the the word for
- 30:46remember means more than just think about it, also do it.
- 30:52Yeah, if you're really going to remember, you will change your
- 30:55behavior because he has suffered for you and he has called you
- 30:59and we want to be with him. We want to obey him.
- 31:03And so Chapter 9, this beautiful first day of his sermon ends by
- 31:09him saying in verse 54. And now, my brethren, I would
- 31:12speak unto you more, but on the Morrow I will declare unto you
- 31:15the remainder of my words, Amen. So he's had a long day of
- 31:20sharing their words. And in the ancient world, I know
- 31:22sermons would go from far more than two or three or four hours.
- 31:27And everyone goes home. And the next day is our last
- 31:30chapter in today's Come Follow Me, Chapter 10, Jacob's second
- 31:35sermon. And here Jacob tells us that
- 31:44during the night he received another visitation.
- 31:47And he is now referred to at least two or three visions in
- 31:51this sermon of these two days, which I think is fascinating.
- 31:55Before we prepare, before we give, before we serve.
- 31:58Are we seeking that God's revelation?
- 32:00And so he tells us in verse three that he had this vision.
- 32:04Wherefore I say unto you, it must needs be expedient that
- 32:08Christ. For in last night the Angel
- 32:11spake unto me that this should be his name.
- 32:13So up until this point, I just did a quick check There are no
- 32:16other references to that title for our Savior, even though
- 32:19we've had dozens of references to Jehovah and to Messiah.
- 32:24And lots of other names. Here is the first reference in
- 32:27the Book of Mormon to the word Christ.
- 32:29And from here on forward Christ is mentioned regularly, and I
- 32:34think it's fascinating that his vocabulary is of course a mix of
- 32:40Hebrew and a little bit of Egyptian and possibly some, you
- 32:44know, other things tied in over time.
- 32:46But Jacob's still coming out of a family whose mother tongue was
- 32:49speaking Hebrew, and so this means the anointed one.
- 32:53But he then talks about how he's going to be crucified.
- 32:56He had that in his earlier vision.
- 32:58He quoted it from Isaiah, and now he's citing it here.
- 33:01But it all ties the redemptive nature of our Savior.
- 33:04That's why I say this section has more on the Atonement than
- 33:07any other section in the Book of Mormon.
- 33:09When you check these passages that Nephi and Jacob have
- 33:13received about the crucifixion, it's coming like Nephi will say,
- 33:18line upon line, precept upon precept.
- 33:22Well, first Nephi learns in back in first Nephi Chapter 11 that
- 33:27he will be crucified for sins, but doesn't say very much about
- 33:32how or why. And then in, as we've already
- 33:35said in this lesson earlier, Second, Nephi chapter 6, verse
- 33:39nine will also say that he will be crucified, but doesn't go
- 33:44into the details. And then here, now in chapter
- 33:4710, verse three, he will learn several things.
- 33:50First of all, that no other nation would crucify their Lord.
- 33:54Absolutely tragic, and it says that they didn't recognize even
- 33:57with the mighty miracles in verse 4.
- 34:00And that's the next thing. It will be because of these
- 34:02miracles that he will work, that they will be suspicious that
- 34:06maybe he is using some improper power.
- 34:10And it's because of those miracles that those who are in
- 34:14charge and are concerned because of priest crafts and iniquities,
- 34:20they will stiffen their necks against him and he will be
- 34:22crucified. So Jacob has learned a few more
- 34:25things that make sense, and he must have wondered, why will
- 34:30this happen? And going on into verse seven, I
- 34:34think this comes out of his vision.
- 34:35What do you think, Jack? Right, it says.
- 34:37Thus saith the Lord God, When the day cometh that they shall
- 34:41believe in me that I am Christ or Messiah or the anointed One,
- 34:47then have I covenanted with their fathers, that they shall
- 34:51be restored in the flesh upon the earth, and unto the lands of
- 34:55their inheritance. I think this is so important for
- 34:58them because of their situation of being an outcast, but it's so
- 35:02important for us because we are a restored organization who is
- 35:07to do the exact same thing so that we can be prepared to come
- 35:10before our Savior. That's right, Jacob is thinking
- 35:15about even the ones who will reject Jesus.
- 35:20But if the day comes when they believe in him, then they will
- 35:23be restored to their lands of inheritance.
- 35:26Jacob, now in verse 10, wants to speak about the land that they
- 35:31are in. The land of thine inheritance.
- 35:35That's right. Now speaking to his people, and
- 35:39verse 11 And this land, the land that Jacob is in, shall be a
- 35:43land of liberty unto the Gentiles, and there shall be no
- 35:47kings upon the land, who shall raise up unto the Gentiles, And
- 35:53I will fortify this land, strengthen this land.
- 35:57And that's looking way, far ahead because obviously in the
- 36:01history of the Book of Mormon that is not the case.
- 36:04So this is looking way in advance, and by gentiles he's
- 36:07referring to the people who are not there now.
- 36:09And I assume that the land had other people there as well, but
- 36:12we'll talk about that more when we get some references to it.
- 36:14And in that fortification of the nations and the lands I want to
- 36:18read from verse 19, I will have all men that dwell thereon, that
- 36:23they shall worship me saith God. Now, unfortunately, we live in a
- 36:27time where not everyone living in in the Western hemispheres
- 36:32are worshipping God, and I think that's one reason why we have to
- 36:36have another purging. That's what we're trying to
- 36:38gather, Israel. And I think what this is saying
- 36:42when he says I will have all men that dwell.
- 36:47The word will there means want. I will it.
- 36:51It is my wish, I will that all, I think that this open door
- 37:00where God will consecrate the land forever for Jacob's seed,
- 37:06so it will be a land for their inheritance.
- 37:09And it's a choice land, because not only them, but all who will
- 37:15worship the Lord will be blessed in this land as well.
- 37:20Moving ahead to verse 23, therefore, cheer up your hearts.
- 37:24So we should be happy, Is that right?
- 37:25Well, this is so fascinating to me because usually I've looked
- 37:28at every single time this is used in scripture.
- 37:30Cheer up or or be of good cheer is used in devastating, horrific
- 37:35times. You're in prison.
- 37:36You're drowning. You're the Lord has just
- 37:38announced his death. You know, he's saying we can
- 37:41always find hope and trust in our saviour.
- 37:46And remember, in addition to being cheerful, be positive
- 37:50about things, and then remember that ye are free to act for
- 37:56yourselves. This is why you can cheer up.
- 37:58It's because you have mental and emotional capabilities to to
- 38:02think, to control your mind. And then the next few words.
- 38:07Where does Jacob get these words from to?
- 38:09Choose the way of everlasting death or the way of eternal
- 38:12life. Who has said that before?
- 38:14Lehigh. Lehigh.
- 38:16He's remembering back to the blessing.
- 38:17Whose blessing? His own, exactly.
- 38:21This is where Lehigh Blessed and we read that, talked about that
- 38:24A. Few weeks ago, yeah.
- 38:25Jacob remembered that blessing. Well, they probably could have
- 38:28read it if they, if Nephi was able to write it down.
- 38:30I presume it was also recorded by others too.
- 38:32Oh, and I'm sure Jacob memorized that.
- 38:34They were so phenomenal at memorization.
- 38:35And this would have been his personal blessing.
- 38:37It must have been a a guidepost, you know.
- 38:41It must have been a, you know, a a light to his path throughout
- 38:45his life. And he ends this beautiful
- 38:48sermon back on the topic of the Resurrection, verse 25.
- 38:52Wherefore May God raise you up from dead by the power of the
- 38:56resurrection, and also from everlasting death and the power
- 39:00of the Atonement. He This is the best chapter in
- 39:04the whole Book of Mormon on the Atonement.
- 39:06It's just set and no one else understands it like Jacob
- 39:10explains it to us. But this then became the
- 39:12foundation of our understanding of the Restoration because of
- 39:17this great sermon by our dear new priest, Jacob.
- 39:21It is so complete and so articulate of all these nuances
- 39:28and details. And it it speaks to everyone.
- 39:31And there's something that everyone can find inspiration
- 39:35here. Wherever you are on the path,
- 39:38wherever you are, find a word or a phrase.
- 39:42You can ponder these things, and Jacob will be a light to you,
- 39:47and he will then help you to reconcile yourselves to the will
- 39:55of God and not to the will of the devil again.
- 40:00There is so much hope in coming to our Savior.
- 40:03That's the choice. And his arms are outstretched
- 40:09for us all. In the name of Jesus Christ,
- 40:12Amen.
