- 0:56if you've not already, to pick up your copy of Slimbing Corporate. It
- 1:00is my first full length detective novel and it we mix elements of classic detective
- 1:04fiction with a few twenty first century twists and membo characters, and the story
- 1:10set against the backdrop of red hot Idaho political race. Slim Incorporated is available
- 1:15in paperback or as an ebook for the kindle, the nook, or the
- 1:19iPad. Well, we have several lost episodes. In fact, the previous
- 1:26series of Nick Carter ended with a change in days and a new season beginning.
- 1:34This episode here is approximately ten episodes after the last one, and we'll
- 1:42get into that a little bit later, and certainly is a quite unusual one.
- 1:46So here from August the twenty fifth of nineteen forty six, and again
- 1:51I'm saying that provisionally is the case of the Red Goose murder. What is
- 2:01it pay for the detective? Yes, it's the case of the Red Goose
- 2:13Puer another case for that most famous of all man hunters, the detective who's
- 2:15ability of solving crime is unequal in the history of detective viction. Nick Carter
- 2:21Master Detective All listen, Patsy, why do you have to come back to
- 2:38the office at this time of day? I just want to be sure that
- 2:39I finished everything before I left, Scuffy, nick Away, It sort of
- 2:44leaves the responsibility on my shoulders. Okay, but shake it up. Well,
- 2:46you have the last show stot today forty to say, twenty hours.
- 2:49It is gonna take but a minute, Scuby. I simply want to have
- 2:52everything in order for the morning. That's a good feed we had, wasn't
- 2:54it. Mmm that Shad was out of this world? Oh God, God,
- 3:00I knew we should have stayed away from this place. Yahds off of
- 3:02staty bone speaking not at the moment. Who's calling? Please? I can't
- 3:10say exactly, Can I do something for you and his assistant? I'd be
- 3:16glad to if I can suppose you tell me why you called my girls very
- 3:29hard. Why don't you call the police, so I wanted to if you
- 3:45had any suspicion that her death wasn't natural, mister Bradley, you'd better call
- 3:47the police. Oh oh, mister, leave it to me. I'll take
- 3:55care of it for you. Thank you so much. By now, what
- 4:00more trouble? Oh not for us, scubby, I have to cass Sergeant
- 4:03Madison than it's for the movie. By not for a minute. We were
- 4:08going to miss that Western Sergeant. Missus. Patty Bradley, manager of the
- 4:15Red Goose on West Seventh Street, says his girl Singer is dead and he
- 4:18thinks maybe she didn't die naturally. You gotta take a look and see what's
- 4:21rot. Oh no, Nick's out of town for a few days. You'll
- 4:26laugh to solve this alone, if you can. Born. Nick just helped
- 4:34me out. I apologize, Sergeant happy having hear you. Bye, Come
- 4:41on, passy, We just got time to make us right with your scubby
- 4:44slip. See how the movies do it? Just for a change. Oh,
- 4:55this is just the way you're found her, Bradley. Nothing's been touching
- 4:58ejagen gee. I open the door to the dressing on the speed to her
- 5:00and now she lay on the floor. I shut the door again and called
- 5:04mister Carter. God, yeah, yeah, it's murder, all right?
- 5:09You see this that mark around her neck? You mean yeah, strangle with
- 5:13a fine cord or a wire. Maybe it's murder. Sure, only that
- 5:16A few minutes too, not more than fifteen minutes, twenty, I'd say,
- 5:19And how did you happen to come to her dressing room? Bradwick?
- 5:23Was payday today, and I brought up the payroll sheets for her to sign.
- 5:27I'd given her an envelope downstairs sometime before, but she hadn't signed for
- 5:30it. How much did she make? One hundred and fifty weeks? Oh?
- 5:32Good rocket? She was in May more than I do. That her
- 5:35hand bag on the dressing table, yes, I think so. Uh,
- 5:40notice it's open. Let's see if she's still got all that dough fifty by
- 5:45Golley not a cent left in it? Hey, that much have been a
- 5:46motive for the killing? Yeah, robbery? Uh huh? Beautiful kid like
- 5:51that killed for a measing one hundred and fifty bucks. Wait till I get
- 5:55my hands on the guy that just you tatsy, what you doing here?
- 6:00And the demon reporter Scuffy Wilson. I am Maddie. We were almost to
- 6:04the movies when Tatsy's feminine curiosity got the better of her. She just couldn't
- 6:09stand the idea of a murder investigation going on without her being here to poker
- 6:14nosing it. Well, Patsy, now that you poke your nose, and
- 6:15you can just poke it right out again. I don't need no help from
- 6:18you. Why, Sergeant, I wasn't trying to help. I was just
- 6:23interested. Is that was she killed? Sergeant? Yeah, strangled with a
- 6:28quarter a piece of wire, one hundred and fifty bucks stolen out of her
- 6:30hand back and no more questions? See yes, sergeant, but please may
- 6:34I just watch? Okay, okay, just don't follow me. I won't,
- 6:40Bradley, how many rooms on this floor? There are three rooms on
- 6:43the second floor, Sergeant, My office, this dressing room, in the
- 6:46dark room, all on this side of the building. Dark room, what's
- 6:48that for? That's where the girl who takes the flashlights of customers in the
- 6:51club develops the picture she takes. As soon as she gets three or four
- 6:55snaps, she comes up and makes Princeville the customers to buy. Then she
- 6:58could have been in and out of the room anytime. Yes, yes,
- 7:02she could. I want to talk to her. Who sure? Hey,
- 7:06if all three rooms are on this side, I must all look out under
- 7:11that roof next door. Yes they do. The adjoining building is a one
- 7:14story flat roof to fair same length as this one. Uh huh, wind
- 7:16this always kept open on him on hot nights like this. Yes, you
- 7:20ever see anyone on that roof from this club? I mean no, I
- 7:26don't ever remember any of our people ever going out there, No reason why.
- 7:30Oh Marie, this minute, sergeant. This is Marie, the girl
- 7:34who takes a pictures. You said you wanted to talk to her. Yeah,
- 7:36I do. And Marie, when did you see this girl? This?
- 7:42What happened to her? Yes, Marie, she did been killed,
- 7:47poor Paul. Why don't you see her last? Just after her first show,
- 7:51maybe half an hour ago? Or she all right when you saw her?
- 7:55Oh? Yes, she was as happy as anything. She came up.
- 7:59She did my last patch of photos. I asked her for autograph picture
- 8:03of his jow and she said that if I take one, she'd autographic form.
- 8:07Yeah. I took one, did you? Yes? Make it right
- 8:09there? You developed it yet? Oh? I was just going to now,
- 8:13well, let me say it as soon as you got it done,
- 8:15might get some ideas from him. And then I watched the Marie I used
- 8:18to take pictures when I was a kid. I'm Patty Bow and Stargeant Nathison's
- 8:24assistance. It's my assistant, my pain in the neck. I'm glad to
- 8:28have you. Did you ever develop your Yeah? Women, they give me
- 8:35a pain, mister Bradley. How many employees do you have here in the
- 8:39records? While there are twelve in the kitchen crew, seven in the orchestra,
- 8:43five front men in the lobby and inside the check girls, flower girl
- 8:48and Marie. I want to talk to them, all of them. Get
- 8:50him up there, get him up charge, and couldn't we use to take
- 8:52it easy, just talk to them one at a time, kind of private
- 8:56like and don't want to upset the whole club. Give a club bad name,
- 8:58you know all, don't give it another thought, mister Bradley, project
- 9:01matthat it is the soul of discretion in the epitome of instigrity. Are you
- 9:07calling me names? Again? Oh not at all, Naddy. They were
- 9:09compliments. If you will do it well, pipe town, will you okay?
- 9:13Bradley. I will take it easy, but I want to talk to
- 9:16every one of them alone or together. I don't care. Now, come
- 9:20on, let's get start. Hey, Sasha, that's the news for you.
- 9:37Yeah, what is the stuff? Your homicide squad is all? Who
- 9:39just left? Oh? Some news that helps a lot? Your face?
- 9:45Your check up? Yeah? Yeah, we have recounted for all but two
- 9:46readers in one of the front men, and all three of them have been
- 9:50with me for years. They can't be mixed up in this? Who says
- 9:52I can't? Anybody could be mixed up in it. But we'll let him
- 9:56go for now. I want to ask bet Marie a few questions. She's
- 10:00the one nobody can check up on. Let's go back up and see what
- 10:03she's got. A safe person, if you don't mind, George and I'll
- 10:05stay down here. You two go right ahead, ask you anyway, all
- 10:09right? Come on st right with him? Addie, old boy Radley says
- 10:15she only makes thirty five bucks a week. What she can get out of
- 10:18the customers. She could have needed that money or she seems like a nice
- 10:22kid. Maddie, I don't think she's new. Who When will you guys
- 10:26learn that appearances don't mean a thing. Hey, look for you read the
- 10:31way to show you the picture she took a Paula here it is. You
- 10:35just think she'll ever autographic for me? Now looks happy enough? And look
- 10:39at this one, sergeant, that's the picture, maritok while Paula was singing
- 10:43her last number, see you in the background. Yeah, and see whose
- 10:46picture it is? Hey, that's all worth than capul A millionaire playboy.
- 10:50Uh huh? Does he come here often? Oh? About once a month,
- 10:54and always with a different girl on this time. You always get this
- 10:58picture taken too, and he's always good for swell chips. Marie. Suppose
- 11:01you and me have a little talk. Yeah, yeah, Well I have
- 11:05to go down and deliver these pictures before the person is leave. Okay,
- 11:07but make it snappy. I'll go with you, just in case. In
- 11:13case of justin case, was Marie nice cubby. She made me extra copies
- 11:18of the last batch of pictures, and I scrapple. Patsy, let me
- 11:22see that picture of van Keppel again. It's a good one, isn't it,
- 11:28Patsy. How many men do you see in the orchestra of this picture?
- 11:31Huh? Oh jeez, cubby. They're so fine in the background it's
- 11:35hard to tell. Well, look closely, fine six sway. Well,
- 11:41Bradley told us there were seven men in the band. The picture shows only
- 11:43six. Huh, I wonder where the other one was. Mister Bradley,
- 11:48you said there were seven men in the band. Well, this picture taken
- 11:52during the first shot, and I chose only six. So let's see.
- 11:56Yes, the guitar player Steeves isn't there. See that's funny. Any idea
- 12:01why he wasn't there when his picture was neat? No? No, I
- 12:05know he was there when the show's tarted, and he's there now. I
- 12:07saw him as they came up. I don't understand this, covey. Do
- 12:11you suppose he could have a right? Yeah? He tells me this was
- 12:16Paula's last night here. She was going to work for another club, begetting
- 12:18tomorrow night. Yeah, she said, true. Well, how come you
- 12:22didn't tell me about that before? He just slipped my mind, Sudan,
- 12:26Why was she leaving? Oh she got a bit of job, more money
- 12:31than I get there, that's all. Dodge and Rob Porler were singing her
- 12:33last number of The guitar player was missing from the band. Do you suppose
- 12:37he could have come up here and done this a guitar player? Man,
- 12:41Hey, Bradley, do these musicians have a dressing room here anywhere? Who?
- 12:45Yes, yes I do. I'm the third floor. They keep this
- 12:46stuff in lockers up there. How much long are they going to be playing?
- 12:50You see it's nine ten now they break in nine thirty. Uh huh,
- 12:52so we got twenty minutes? I said, we look at this guitar
- 12:56player's locker. Maybe he knows something about this. Which one is this?
- 13:09Steve SLocker said, third one from the last. You've got his name on
- 13:13it. Oh, not lock That helps h nothing in this old jacket,
- 13:20that's the racing fall. Hey what's that written on it? Huh? Oh
- 13:24Central eight seven four old Mike. That's probably his bookmaker. Yeah. Probably
- 13:30these boys play the horses pretty heavily, I understand. Oh yeah, then
- 13:35the Steves couldn't need money. Maybe if the nags weren't running for anything else
- 13:39there, Sergeant No, Perhaps the only this old guitar case. Oh and
- 13:43that's empty. Gosh, they use nice Belvis to the lion, and don't
- 13:46they Well maybe it was nice one, but it's pretty well shot out Patsy.
- 13:50Oh yes, look at this big chair and it is sageant. Look
- 13:54at this money hidden them alone, right, say that's what I paid Paula
- 14:01tonight. So Steve took it. But but why did he have to kill
- 14:05it together? If he could have gotten without that, we don't know that
- 14:07he did killing, mister Bradley. The guy that got the money is the
- 14:09guy that got the killing, according to my book. Hey Bradley, get
- 14:13Steve Dawson up here. We'll see if you can get out of this hurt
- 14:16my surgeon. I'll head meet you in Paula's room right after the band breaks
- 14:20for intermission, and you can better. I'll keep my eye on him until.
- 14:22Mister Bradley, do you have a phone we could use? Yes,
- 14:26Court, it's one in my office. Paul Thanks, and with me,
- 14:30Scuddy. I've got a job for you anywhere with you, beautiful, Just
- 14:33leave the way you say you want me to call this number we found on
- 14:46Steve's racing form, right, cutty and ask the night Well you want me
- 14:50to ask him anything special? No, just say it's Steve Dawson, Colin.
- 14:54I'm so around and see if maybe you needn't let something sort about Steve
- 14:56finances. Okay, what can we lose? Here goes hey. I wish
- 15:03I knew what this. Steve's voice sounds like we just talked a little husky.
- 15:07Is it were a bad connection? Michael never knows the difference? I
- 15:11okay, hello, is Mike there? Mike Steve Dawson. Well, I've
- 15:22got part of her, isn't there? Sunway? I can let you have
- 15:37part of it now and the rest of a little. I want to tonight.
- 15:48Okay, Mike, goodbye. Steve didn't need he sure did four hundred
- 15:52dollars. I want to clock tonight and no fooling around either. Steve need
- 15:56that money so bad he'd be willing to kill Paul. The get sure looks
- 16:00that way from where I said. I wonder what's that on the floor over
- 16:04under the window? Huh oh, it looks like far t Yeah, sorrow,
- 16:12somebody feels maybe somebody was out on the roof and got so had a
- 16:15shoe you rarely said nobody ever went out there. But look here here's a
- 16:21smudge in the window, so too scubby. Did you suppose you got a
- 16:25flashlight? Pass? Yeah? My here in my bag. I think I'll
- 16:27have a look at the roof outside this window. There might be footprints or
- 16:33something. If you're going out there, I am too, Give me a
- 16:36hand. Okay, beautiful here, easy man. Yeah, TI on this
- 16:42roof is soft, isn't it. Yeah, generally gets that way on warm
- 16:47days. Well, I don't see any prints here anyway, It doesn't prove
- 16:52anything. Of course, soft tar wouldn't hold Prince very well. Goubby this
- 16:56fireplace my fire escape. I'm getting all Next up looks be the one that
- 17:00goes get to the musician's locker room. Well, it probably is. I
- 17:03remember seeing one when we were up there before. Parla's body's still in a
- 17:07room. No, they took it away after the homicide boys finished their investigation.
- 17:11I'm glad of that. I don't over something got my toe in it.
- 17:17Oh there's nothing here passing. Oh wait, huh, here's an all
- 17:21guitar string. Maybe a trip on that, an old guitar string, And
- 17:25she play he's the guitar Funny, isn't it? How do you mean funny?
- 17:30The sergeant says Paula was chocked with a cord or a piece of wire,
- 17:33of course, and finding this guitar string here is no coincidence that's all.
- 17:37It's all. I wonder, what do you mean? I wonder?
- 17:41Oh, I don't know, Scuffy, But that's what Nick always says when
- 17:44he's not sure if something, oh, his master's boy, sir, something
- 17:48like that. I'm just trying to think the way Nick would do it if
- 17:52he were here. Oh. I wish he were here too. Oh,
- 17:55I don't know. It looks pretty open and shut to me. I know
- 17:57it does, but that's always a I'm nixed air to Chuby. It's one
- 18:02of the musicians just coming in the pewler's room. That must be Stawton.
- 18:04Yeah, come on, I want to hear what he has to say.
- 18:08Yeah, come on, mind if we join you? Sargeant? Well,
- 18:11the love of Pete. What are you two doing out there on the roof,
- 18:15all just looking at the stars, that's all? Do you mind if
- 18:18we come in? I don't mind what you do, so long as you
- 18:21don't get my way. Thanks? Help me up right here? It's so
- 18:26easy watch the seal, Thanks, Guvy. Won't you come into mister Wilson?
- 18:33All deeds go card the usual war? Will you two ever stop clowning?
- 18:41This is a murder case, murder? What have I got to do
- 18:44with the murder everything? If I mistaken Dawson? Where were you at about
- 18:48eight o'clock tonight? Eight o'clock playing with the band, same as all that's
- 18:52s? Where as I p thanks and Steve? Show me which one in
- 19:00this picture? As you? Why I don't seem to be there? When
- 19:06was this taken during Paula's last number in the first show tonight? How where
- 19:11were you? Oh? Yeah, I remember now. I was like coming
- 19:14in. Mister Graddy said you were there when the show opened? Huh oh
- 19:18yeah, I had to step out for a minute. You need money pretty
- 19:22bad, don't you? Money? Yeah? No, I just got paid
- 19:25tonight. I got plenty. You didn't get paid enough to repay the loan
- 19:29mic Major three hundred bucks plus one hundred interests. Okay, what's that?
- 19:33Where did you find that out? Mike told us? Mike? What do
- 19:36you know about Mike? And he's calling for at one o'clock tonight, isn't
- 19:38he? I don't know what you're talking about now? And why did you
- 19:42kill Paula Windsor the night and then swipe one hundred and fifty dollars from a
- 19:45first and don't try to lie out of it. We found the money in
- 19:48that old guitar case in your locker. I didn't kill I swear, I
- 19:52sageant. We found this on the roof, just outside the window. What's
- 19:53that string for a fiddle or something? So? What could be a guitar
- 19:57string? Maddy? That's settles at Dawson. You saw Bradley get Paula her
- 20:03salary earlier tonight, so you sneaked off the bandstand during your last number,
- 20:06came up to her room and tried to sneak her first. He caught here,
- 20:10and you killed her. Oh I didn't kill her. I didn't just
- 20:11strangle her with a guitar string you happened to have in your pocket and threw
- 20:15it out the window. I didn't kill her. She wasn't even the room
- 20:17and I said some money. Oh so you admit you stole the money.
- 20:21Yeah, yes, I stole her, But I didn't kill her. She
- 20:25was just finishing her song when I got back downstairs. Oh God, Dawson,
- 20:29if you can make a jewey belief that you're a better man than I
- 20:30think you are, I didn't you look here, scuy. You don't want
- 20:33to pay the stupid paper on her dressing table with that same number on it,
- 20:37but we just called eight seven four. Oh, I wonder what she
- 20:41was doing with that playing the horses, I dadded, Sergeant. May I
- 20:45ask mister Dawson a question? Oh you again? All right? Ask?
- 20:49Let me get out of here. And mister Dawson, what did you and
- 20:52paul I have in common about the Purple Pig? Nothing? Mike is a
- 20:57manager there and he's my bookie. Paula was supposed to start singing it tomorrow
- 21:00night. Mike met her here when he came over once to see me and
- 21:04gave her a job. So that's where she was going. Yeah, Bradley
- 21:10was all burned up about it, but Mike offer her more than Bradley did,
- 21:11so she gave notice. Come on, Dawson, you and I,
- 21:15You and I have a data headquarters. What sorry, I'm booking you for
- 21:18robbery and possible murder. Now hold out your hands. I got a bracelet
- 21:22for it. I tell you, I can't tell me. Don't count so
- 21:29long, missus Patsy caught it. If you pick up anything I missed,
- 21:33gimmy raise. I'm always happy to hear from you. Why, thank you,
- 21:37sergeant? What do you think I think if I killed the girl with
- 21:45a guitar string, I'd never throw it out the window where it would be
- 21:47found. First thing. That's the way I feel. And it seems to
- 21:51me that if Paula did catch these dog and keeps stealing her money, he
- 21:53wouldn't be likely to fishing around in his pocket to see if he had an
- 21:56old guitar string he could KILLO is sure right, Patsy. He'd more likely
- 22:02strangle her with his bare hands. You know, Scuby, I think the
- 22:04murder had nothing to do with the robbery. I think whoever killed Paula did
- 22:08it deliberately and used the guitar string to throw suspicion on Steve Dawson, which
- 22:14would a call her is leaving it right outside where it would be sure to
- 22:15be firm. And I noticed another thing to Scubby that makes me think Dawson
- 22:19didn't kill us. It's not proof, but it's something to think about.
- 22:22Yeah, what's that? Well, Well, when I saw Paula's body,
- 22:26I noticed that she had unpitched her dressed if she were going to take it
- 22:29off, and her shoes were off, and one of her stockings was unfastened,
- 22:32which means she'd been in her room long enough to start changing her costumes.
- 22:37Good girl. And if she's been leaning over and fastening her stocking,
- 22:40the killer could have crept up behind her without being seen. That's what I
- 22:42was painting. She'd just look at this picture, cousin Marisa tonight she's laughing
- 22:49and looks at that. She didn't have happy Huh, look at this picture.
- 22:56Look at the mirror. Hey, there's the figure of a man reflected
- 22:59in the beer. From the angle at which the picture was taken, he
- 23:03must have been standing on the roof just outside her window. Probably thought he
- 23:06couldn't be seen, but the camera caught him in the mirror plain enough to
- 23:10make out who it is. No, the picture doesn't show him very plainly,
- 23:14but it's definitely a man in a black coat, and the musicians were
- 23:17white, so it's not the guitar player, Gobby. This man has the
- 23:19floor and he's but no, it's the right homes there, the less the
- 23:23way most men wear them. He let's ask Brandy. Maybe he'll be able
- 23:26to recognize who it is, right, Gobby, Come on, we'll show
- 23:30Sergeant Mappison. Yes, rally, Rally, We've got something to show you.
- 23:47Can we go somewhere where it won't be so ni. Yes, yeah,
- 23:49I suppose you go right in here with the door closed. Yes,
- 23:56this is now. What have you found that would interest me? And mister
- 24:00Bradley? This picture was taking this evening in Paula's room, right after the
- 24:03first shoe. Oh yes, I remember Marie saying that she took one.
- 24:07If you look in the mirror, you can see the reflection of a man
- 24:10standing outside her window on the roof. What. Yes, yes, I
- 24:15see he's a pret pitio. It isn't a better picture of him so he
- 24:21could recognize who it is. Mister Bradley, have you ever been out on
- 24:23the roof outside your office? No? I never go out there. Then
- 24:29how do you suppose the spot of roof toog got on the rug in your
- 24:30office? I wouldn't. You probably came off your shoe, mister Bradley.
- 24:34I see there's still some tar on the heel, but I you're a right
- 24:38heel. Heay. Look here are you implying that I killed Paula? I
- 24:41am. I didn't realize it until I saw you again just now. But
- 24:45you wear your flower and your right lapels practically no one does that. You're
- 24:49a pair of idiots. Why should I kill Paula? I had no motive
- 24:53to do a thing like that. I don't understand about the motor part either,
- 24:56mister Bradley. But I'm sure you killed her. Oh see here,
- 25:00Just because I happened to be standing outside Paula's window when Maurice snapped that picture
- 25:03doesn't prove that I kill her. Just went out for some mayor and then
- 25:07went back to my office. She was alive the last time I saw her.
- 25:11You've forgotten one thing, mister Bradley. Your fingerprints around the guitar stringer
- 25:17strangled her with? All right, so I killed her? What are you
- 25:21two gonna do about it? I'll have you two taken care of so fast
- 25:23going down, mister Bradley. You can't scare me with that little pop gun.
- 25:29Don't kids yourself, mister Bradley, that he knows how to use that
- 25:33gun, and she will if she has to. And at twenty two,
- 25:36they's just a little hole in a man's part of her forty five? Does
- 25:38that? It's a amed right the way he pass me. Thanks scutting,
- 25:42Now will you sit down, mister Bradley. Thanks you all If you're calls
- 25:48Roger Madison, he can put both the rubber and the killer in the same
- 25:53cell. You don't mean you're going to be at that typewriter for another hour
- 26:10yet. I'm sorry, but I have to have a full report ready for
- 26:12Nick when he comes back, and I want to get it down in black
- 26:15and white. While I was still pressed in my mind, okay, okay,
- 26:18I quipped, I'm going home. I'll see you again some time.
- 26:23I hope give your ring that time when you're freeing. Blarn you Patsy bowed.
- 26:30If I wasn't in love with you, good night, of course.
- 26:40Let's see where is that? Oh yeah, Nick Carr is off at Pappy
- 26:47Bone speaking. I just wanted to tell you he did. Oh that's good.
- 26:55I'll put that in my report too. Oh say so we waited on
- 27:00the roof outside her window for her to come back from the floor show.
- 27:03Uh huh. It was while he was standing out there that he saw Steve
- 27:07DAWs And swipe the money out of her purse. Oh well, that gave
- 27:11him the idea that he could have a perfect alibi by making Steve the coat
- 27:15for the killing as well as the robbery. So he went up the fireus
- 27:18came to the musician's room, found an old guitar string Steve had thrown out,
- 27:23and got back outside Paula's window just in time to see Marie Snapper picture
- 27:29I seem And then while she was changing her clothes, he crept up behind
- 27:33her and strangling and threw the guitar string out on the roof, where they
- 27:37found for the police. Oh bye, somewhere else. Yeah, I didn't
- 27:44tell what his motive was. Yeah, he loved Paula, but she turned
- 27:48him down cold. He discovered this. He gave her her first job.
- 27:52He felt she owed him something, but she told him to his face and
- 27:55he had done nothing for her, that she was leaving him for a better
- 27:57job with a better man. Well that maybe he's so mad that the fact
- 28:02that they really loved her desperately that he decided if he couldn't have her,
- 28:06nobody else was going. Oh the poor guy. Love is an awful thing
- 28:11sometimes, Yeah, especially if it's not returned. That's one thing I don't
- 28:18understand. Who said you told him his fingerprints were on the guitar string?
- 28:22Now, what was the idea of that? Well, Nick always has something
- 28:27to clinch the case with, so I happened to think of that? What
- 28:32you want to know? A guitar string? He wouldn't take any finger.
- 28:33Prince sure Si didn't argue it sudden, mister Bradley didn't. Well, Patsy,
- 28:49the absence of Mega, I suppose I'll have to get my hand so
- 28:52next week, so from you, how about it? I sure can do,
- 28:55Karl. The case started when both Vince O'Neill and Auto Lerner saw they
- 29:00were married to the same girl. What did Nick do about that? Well,
- 29:03he shouted out to find the girl and straightened things out if he could.
- 29:06And he found her, I suppose, knowing Nick, Oh, yes
- 29:10he did. But when he located her finally she could no longer give them
- 29:12any information. She's been using a new jar of corocream and taking a bath
- 29:18for what does that have to do with it? Why? Everything? That
- 29:22and the fight on the train, all right, all right, what's the
- 29:26name of the store? We call it A Case of the Extra Husband.

- 31:26Sometimes it can be easy to compare episode at Golden Age programs to their
- 31:33television counterparts. However, there are sometimes when there's not really a comparison at
- 31:38all, except perhaps the soap opers. Well, most detective shows in the
- 31:45United States anyway, do about twenty two to maybe twenty four episodes a year.
- 31:52The program like Nick Carter really ran unless there was a pre as constantly
- 31:59all a time for the better part of twelve years without even a break.
- 32:06Ideally, you'd like to start to be there, weeke in and week out
- 32:09to record the program, but sometimes that just doesn't work out. And what
- 32:15do you do? I think the majority of programs the answer to what do
- 32:19you do is your brand a substitute for your lead character. And we've seen
- 32:25that numerous times. Going back to Sherlock Holmes, Tom Conway was out one
- 32:32week and Ben Wright was brought in. Frank Graham out for a few weeks,
- 32:37replaced with Paul duvalv on Jeffer Reagan, while Bailey unable to perform one
- 32:43week on Let George Do It, replaced by an actor named Ken Peters.
- 32:46The radio program Yours Cooley Johnny Gawler didn't have that problem because it was in
- 32:53the mid to late fifties, because it was transcribed and recorded three weeks,
- 32:59and so if for some reason Bob Bailey wasn't able to make his recording session.
- 33:05They just go ahead and reschedule. This was not the case in the
- 33:08mid nineteen forties for Nick Carter. The solution they tried, which is less
- 33:13popular, is to like the supporting characters come in and solve the case.
- 33:19I think both solutions definitely present some problem. In one case, you're really
- 33:25asking the audience to go ahead and believe that some other voice is Nick Carter
- 33:30or Jeffrey and or Philip Marlowe, and that can be a big lead for
- 33:35people who listen and week in and week out. On the other hand,
- 33:37with a mystery program, if you have your supporting characters go in and solve
- 33:44the case, the question could be raised, why aren't they this smarts were
- 33:49resourceful all the time. The way they manage this with Patsy is probably not
- 33:53the way that I would choose to do it, but essentially they give her
- 33:59a case here where the typical nineteen forties woman I is key to being able
- 34:07to sault the case. He's contributed these sort of clues to Nick's investigations,
- 34:12but never in such an important capacity, and overall the case works well.
- 34:16Though you have to feel for poor Sergeant Mathieson because when in Nick Carter's week
- 34:24off, he doesn't even get to sault the case Nick sidekicks beat him to
- 34:30the punch. Now, regarding the dating of this episode, the lost episode
- 34:35since last week, the case of the Missing alarm Clock, the Case of
- 34:39the Unwilling Criminal, the Case of the Black Key, the case of the
- 34:43Beautiful Brunette death, after Dinner It was a Good Dinner, The case of
- 34:49the Double Double Cross, the case of the Diplomat Diamond, the Case of
- 34:53the Immigrant Girl, and the case of the Useless Shots. Now, the
- 35:00log for otrsite dot com actually lists the case of the Extra Husbands as the
- 35:06story that aired on August twenty fifth of nineteen forty six. However, since
- 35:10we heard that the case of the extra to Husband's announced after the Case of
- 35:16the Red Goose Murder, which the OTR side log has airing on September first,
- 35:23we can only conclude that they got the order of shows inverted. And
- 35:29this is further back up by the Radio Goold index dot com which states clearly
- 35:35that the transcription date for this particular program was August to twenty fifth. So
- 35:42that's all we have to say about that, as far as Gump would say,
- 35:47all right, well, that'll actually do it for today. We will
- 35:52be back tomorrow with yours truly, Johnny Dollar, and then join us back
- 35:58here next day for another episode of Nick Carter Master Detective. In the meantime,
