- 2:07well ass saying hello again to some old France. But here now is from
- 2:13October thirteenth, nineteen fifty one, The Strange Elopement of Professor Sloan, Mister
- 2:23Moto, mister I Ooh murto. Once again, NBC brings you Pula surprise
- 2:38winner John P. Mark One's fabulous and mysterious Mister Moto, International Agent Extraordinary,
- 2:46the inscrutable, crafty, and courageous little Oriental whose exploits have endeared him
- 2:51to millions of Americans. In another adventure in the world of mystery and international
- 2:57intrigue, the night's story concerns the strange elopement of Professor Sloane and stars mister
- 3:05Moto. Mister i A Moto. I first learned of the disappearance of Professor
- 3:24Sloan from my chief Captain Derisford, when I arrived in Washington. In response
- 3:30to his urgent message, here are the facts. Moto. He checked out
- 3:35of his laboratory at the Ellmpton Project last Friday evening shortly after six o'clock oose.
- 3:39He picked up his car in the parking lots drove away toward town.
- 3:44The attendant says he stopped at the corner where his assistant, Miss Martin,
- 3:46was waiting for a bus, offered her a lift. She entered the car,
- 3:51and they drove off together. And neither one of them has been seen
- 3:53since. The Professor Sloane was one of the scientists working on the EAH bomb,
- 3:58was he not? Captain Professor Sloane is one of the top experts on
- 4:00the wave mechanics of the hydrogen ADAM and he's assistant. She's a former student
- 4:04of the professors And well, there has been gossip about him and Miss Martin
- 4:10for some time. You see, Sloan's wife is an invalid. However,
- 4:14missus Sloane says that there was nothing between him and his assistant. It doesn't
- 4:17seem likely that she would have tolerated Helen Martin and her home if there had
- 4:20been Miss Martin redicted with the Sloanes. She occupied a room in their house.
- 4:25I think it there is considerable difference in age between the professor and miss
- 4:29Martin. He is fifty five, she is twenty four. Still May and
- 4:33November. It sometimes happens. Yes, the professor's car was that never located
- 4:41very much, so it was illegally parked on the street in Charleston, AH.
- 4:45My men went over it with a fine tooth comb, but no clues.
- 4:48I have the complete dossier on the case here. I suggest you read
- 4:51it on the train on your way down there, and then destroy it.
- 4:55Yes, sir, we want no publicity as yet. After all, a
- 4:59professor may just have well, elope, will this girl? It quite so,
- 5:02Captain, But I cannot help thinking it would be a very very strange
- 5:06elopement. Indeed, Helenton, South Carolina, is a tiny hamlet on the
- 5:25Savannah River, and not counting the military and civilian personnelity h bomb project,
- 5:30it has a population of less than a thousand. Professor Sloan's house was a
- 5:34pleasant rambling mansion on the outskirts of the village, overlooking the river, and
- 5:40the door was opened by a uniformed nurse. Come in, mister Mortow.
- 5:45Missus lawn is expecting you now. Thank you right through here on the sun
- 5:49port. Yes, she's sitting up in her wheel stairs today. I am
- 5:53glad of that. I would not like to ring both myself if she were
- 5:56too ill. This whole thing is upset or terrible. Try to make the
- 6:00interview just as brief as you can. Of course, Yes, dear mister
- 6:06Moto has arrived. Ray if you want me to ah last, Thank Heaven
- 6:14they've put you on this case. Mister Moto. Those other men, bunglers,
- 6:17all of them, sit down, Sit down, thank you. You
- 6:24have a very beautiful place here, missus Loan. I hate it all.
- 6:28The view is very fine, but when I think of that lovely river being
- 6:31polluted with those horrible death dealing atomic poisons. Did you know it's not safe
- 6:38to eat the fish? I understood that was only a rumor. Well,
- 6:41I certainly wouldn't risk it. I'm sick enough without exposing myself to radioactivity.
- 6:46You see, I had none your last year. Oh but you didn't come
- 6:50here to listen to my troubles. What can I do to help? Mister
- 6:56Moto? Tell me something about your husband, missus Loan. He's a wonderful
- 7:00man, a brilliant man, the kind of man who wants nothing in life
- 7:04but to be let alone and do his work. Who is not happy working
- 7:10on the h bound project. He hated it. We both hated it all.
- 7:13When we were teaching at the university, we were happy. We had
- 7:15our little settle of friends on the faculty, and we were free. Since
- 7:20he's been working on this horrible project, we've never known a moment's peace.
- 7:25Hundred spied upon, not knowing whom to trust, afraid to speak for fear
- 7:30our words might be misinterpreted. You do not seem to be afraid to speak
- 7:33your mind to me, Missus Sloan. No, mister Moto, because I
- 7:36feel sure that as an Oriental, you cannot help feeling a revulsion against the
- 7:41thing that maimed so many innocent people. In Japan, patomic weapons are a
- 7:46very very ober force, but in the world today they are a very very
- 7:50necessary boss. So you're like all the others I might have known. That's
- 7:57why you want to find my husband, isn't it so he can be put
- 8:00back to work on the business of destroying the world. I think your husband
- 8:03wants to be found, Missus Sloan. Why do you say that Whene's car
- 8:07was found in Charleston. It was parked in front of a fire plug.
- 8:11If he placed it there, he must have wanted to draw attention to it
- 8:15as quickly as possible. Ah, but did he park it there? I
- 8:18think he did. Then you don't think he ran off with Helen Martin?
- 8:22No, not voluntarily. My husband is a very obstinate man, mister Moto.
- 8:26I've never known him to do a thing against his will. That is
- 8:30a useful thing to know, a pallaver. Nothing strikes me as contradictory in
- 8:33this case, missus Sloane. If Helen lived in his house, why was
- 8:39she waiting for a bus when the professor rode out of the parking lot.
- 8:41Did she not usually ride home with him? Not always. We're not on
- 8:46the main highway here. If she was going into town, it would be
- 8:48several miles out of the way. Nevertheless, he stopped and picked her up.
- 8:52Well, he might have remembered he had an errand in town. Things
- 8:54like that often slipped his mind, and he would suddenly remember. So did
- 8:58he have an hear in his house? Not for me, If that's what
- 9:01you mean. Why do you think your husband disappeared? Your guess is as
- 9:07good as mine, mister Moto. I only know that he did not like
- 9:09the work that he was doing and had every reason to want to run away
- 9:13from it, And miss Martin. My husband is a brilliant man, mister
- 9:18Moto, and his work is important to the world. I only have a
- 9:22short time to live. He will have to go on when I am no
- 9:24longer here. Do I make myself peer? I am so sorry, Missus
- 9:30Slawan, so very very Sully. Please, sympathy is the one thing that
- 9:33I cannot endure. Ah. Now I must ask you to leave me.
- 9:37Are you quite sure there is nothing else you want to tell me, Missus
- 9:39Sloan. I have told you everything you see. After all, I am
- 9:43a weak, selfish woman. For the little time I have left eyes,
- 9:48I would like to have my husband with me. I do want you to
- 9:52find him, mister Moto. I believe Hi, Missus Sloan, thank you
- 9:58and good day. Good day, mister Moto. Well you did tea did
- 10:07short? Thanks mister Moto. Miscoff. What is the nature of Missus Sloan's
- 10:11illness? Permucious denia complicated by brandy Ah. I thought I could pick to
- 10:16an odor, but you haven't been on one of her good days. She's
- 10:20a complete, hopeless alcoholic. I noticed an X ray machine in the room.
- 10:26No, no, it's not cancer. The professor uses that for his
- 10:28hobby. Hobby he collects diamonds. I think they use X rays to detect
- 10:31flaws or something. Very curious hobby for a professor. Oh, they're not
- 10:35valuable diamonds, just the industrial type. What is your opinion about the professor's
- 10:41disappearance? I don't know. I think he may be suffering from amnesia.
- 10:46Why do you think that, Miscott? Well, he's been forgetful lately,
- 10:48more so than usual. Huh. Several times I awoke in the night and
- 10:52heard the X ray machine hunting. Did missus Sloan mention it? No,
- 10:56he'd gone to bed and forgotten to turn it off when I need it to.
- 11:00He needs fly in a rage, and I'd left it on. That's
- 11:03wasn't like him. He knew he was absent minded and used to joke about
- 11:05it. How do you come for miss Martin's disappearance? Understand I'm not making
- 11:11any accusations, mister Moto, of course, But Helen Martin stand a year
- 11:16in Moscow right after the war as an exchange student. Are you suggesting that
- 11:20she may have become in doctrinated while she was there? I know it.
- 11:24She was terribly against the professor working on the H bomb project, So is
- 11:28his wife, so she tells me what the professor himself not in the same
- 11:33way. Helen was very bitter about what she called a lack of free exchange
- 11:37of ideas between Russian scientists and ours. What I'm driving at is this,
- 11:43mister Motte. If the professor did have an attack of amnesia, Helen might
- 11:48have taken advantage of it to get in away from the project. And heaven
- 11:52knows what else, mister motto, I'm worried about him, terribly worried.
- 12:11I too was worried about the professor's state, but not for precisely the same
- 12:15reason as Nurse got. My concern was centered on the professor's curious hobby of
- 12:20collecting diamonds and the fact that the diamonds had disappeared along with the professor.
- 12:28As I started walking back toward Ellenton, an automobile stop beside me, and
- 12:33a young man leaned out, give you a let sir, thank you.
- 12:35I would appreciate that, young man. You're you went time working on the
- 12:45H bomb project and no just visiting and of professor Sloan. You know the
- 12:50professor. I you as assistant Helen mart Oh, you are employed on the
- 12:54project, not strictly a local yocle. I run a jewelry store. Ah,
- 12:56that interests me. I don't andy Hope diamond. But people do get
- 13:01engaged and married, even in elegant. By the way, my name is
- 13:05hal Lloyd, named after the comedian in the same name. I am mister
- 13:07Bottle. Mister I a muttle, I thought so, and the I asked
- 13:11one. Well, when the professor disappeared, I figured they put you on
- 13:16the case. How well did you know, miss Martin? She was wearing
- 13:20an engagement ring I gave her. You seemed very constant to the professor's absence.
- 13:24Is the case of disability where everyone in town knows it? And even
- 13:28if they didn't, I don't know it. I mean was wrong when Helen
- 13:31left without saying any to me. You see, she had a dinner date
- 13:33with me that night. She never showed up for it is surely the jewelry
- 13:37didn't. Did Professor Sloan ever discuss his collection of diamonds with you? I
- 13:43mean those chips she was using for his experiments, Well, I let those
- 13:45to him. Did you see what the niche of the experiment was? Oh,
- 13:48I mean to do with fluorescence and photoelectric effect. Was he any more
- 13:54specific than that? No, but Helen was. It seems that diamonds have
- 13:58the highest mounting point of any substance containing hydrogen atom. Yes, I am
- 14:03aware of that. But the type of diamonds he obtained from you contain metal
- 14:07impurities. Is he hope to obtain accurate results? He should have used the
- 14:13purest diamonds available. Maybe the government didn't want to go to the expense.
- 14:18I'm trying to doubt that. Professor Sloan wasn't too well thought of by his
- 14:22colleagues on the project. He often complained of being short changed on materials and
- 14:26equipment in favor of other workers. And mister Lloyd, what do you think
- 14:31happened to Professor Sloan angel fiancee? What I really think? Yes? I
- 14:37think he went off as rocker and Helen is tagging along with him wherever he
- 14:41went to try and keep him out of trouble. How long have you known
- 14:45this Martin? About six months? Did she tell you much about her life
- 14:48before she became the professor's assistant? You mean that year she spent in Moscow?
- 14:52That doesn't make her a red any more than those planned eyes or yours
- 14:56make you a samurai, We'll put you. He had taken mister Lloyd,
- 15:01Well, here's our main street? What there is of it? Where can
- 15:03I drove him at the bus station? Please leaving? So so I have
- 15:07found out what I came here to find. You work there by the way.
- 15:11I'm driving to Charleston. If you're going that way, I'd be glad
- 15:13to take here. May I ask what takes you to Charleston? Same reason
- 15:18you're going there, mister Moto, to look for a missing professor and a
- 15:20girl named Helen Martin. If mister Lloyd was a trustworthy person, there was
- 15:33no reason not to travel in his company. If he was not, it
- 15:37the best to have him where I could see my eye on. I did
- 15:41have a part company with him for an hour after we reached Charleston. What
- 15:45I learned about mister Lloyd during that hour was very, very interesting. Indeed,
- 15:52in the sixth months he had known her in Martin, he had mortgaged
- 15:56or sold what this thing he owned and borrowed onto level and uncitatous for a
- 16:02mount of cash, totally nearly three quarters of a million dollars. He had
- 16:07used the money to buy diamonds not the kind of diamonds usually sowed an engagement
- 16:12ring, but effective so called yellow diamond. When I emerged from the telegraph
- 16:19office with this information, mister Lloyd was kitting in his car in front of
- 16:22it. I've been looking all over for you. You do not seem you
- 16:26have had much difficulty in finding me. Mister Dyke, I thought you'd probably
- 16:30be sending some wires to check up on me. Hell, you are very
- 16:33very astute, mister Leyle wait till I tell you. I think I've got
- 16:37a lead. Ah, So you have checked on the fishing boats, have
- 16:41you right? A man and a girl, supposedly father and daughter, charted
- 16:45a boat last Saturday morning. They went ashore a cat k and while a
- 16:49skipper was having a drink, they charted another boat and sail off from me.
- 16:53I'd like to talk with that skip on, mister Night. What's the
- 16:56matter, mister Morrow, you trust me? Thank you? I do not.
- 17:11I meant what I said. I was not surprised, however, to
- 17:15find that his account of the skipper's story checked in every particular. Obviously,
- 17:18he was as anxious as eye to locate possessorsloan, though for what motive I
- 17:23was still not certain. He had already started a small plane to histen the
- 17:29search, and at one p m. We took off a catcake. From
- 17:32there we started the tortuous trail from island to island until the trail ended at
- 17:37Porto Plans, at a hotel called the Excelsior. The proprietor, a Romanian
- 17:42gentleman named Setti Eminescue, was very very affable, but not very very helpful.
- 17:48They're staying one night only in separate room, nice quiet people. Then
- 17:53they're telling me that they've taken a house. They settled bill and go away,
- 17:57no forwarding address. So they were here, mister Morrow and mister Lemsque,
- 18:03you are quite sure they were a man and woman in this potcrass?
- 18:07Yes? And no? How can I say? The man in the picture
- 18:11has a beard, the woman is more plunder than this, And excuse me
- 18:15more fix here? If I squint my eyes, I say yes. If
- 18:21I do not deceive myself, I say no. She is what we call
- 18:26in my country a dall. And they said they were taking a house on
- 18:30this island, darling, How should I know if they are remaining here?
- 18:33They are not walking the streets, or say, would have seen them?
- 18:37Surely you must know what houses are available, Darling, what are you wanting
- 18:41with this cup? It is not I who want them, mister Lemnesque,
- 18:45it is the United States government. Yeah, mister Morrow is a secret agent.
- 18:48If you know what's good for you, you better talk, mister Lloyd.
- 18:52Then you are a secret agent. While you don't say so, Darling,
- 18:55why did you lie to me before, mister Mnescu darln honeymoon, honey
- 19:00of birds, Daddy, they are not wishing a disturbance from visitor. And
- 19:03see talking about the professor and the young lady. I'm eloping secretly by reading
- 19:07that the professor's wife is not yet dead. I was reluctant to believe it.
- 19:19But when we arrived at the Seaside cottage to which Effie had directed us,
- 19:23we were admitted by a bronze, vigorous looking middle aged man whom the
- 19:27parents had altered so readially that even mister Lloyd did not at first recognize him.
- 19:33Well, Lloyd, I can't honestly say I'm glad you've found us,
- 19:36But since you have, I hope there won't be any ill feeling. Where's
- 19:38Helen in the patio? Come along, She'll certainly be surprised to see you,
- 19:45Helen, their way are visitors now. Now, don't be ungracious,
- 19:52my dear Helen, this gentleman is I'm afraid I forgot the name, Sir
- 19:56a Moto. Mister I a motive, yes, my dear, he's a
- 20:00federal agent. But no matter, we have nothing to conceal from him.
- 20:03I am so very very happy you hear that Professor Sloan. In that case,
- 20:07you will surely oblige me by telling me the whole story. Well,
- 20:11I'm pretty inarticulate when it comes to this sort of thing, Helen, perhaps
- 20:15you had better. It's quite simple, mister Moto. It's Addeus and I
- 20:19have been in love with each other for a long time, but because of
- 20:22Missus Sloane's illness, and there were other reasons too. Please be specific,
- 20:27miss Martin. Well, I imagine you know how it is with faculty members
- 20:33of a small college, even a breath of scandal. Lest I am quite
- 20:36aware of that. Well, Missus Sloane had been told she didn't have much
- 20:40longer to live, and had made it quite clear that her only concerns for
- 20:45the Professor's future happiness. Since we wouldn't be hurting anyone. They didn't seem
- 20:49to be any reason. I mean, didn't you realize that the Professor's unexplained
- 20:53disappearance from a secret government project of her first importance was dangers us both to
- 21:00you and to the security of your country. But help you don't have the
- 21:06your next or do not make any unnecessary movement. I did not expect you
- 21:10quite so soon, mister Emery. Why do you think safe gave you the
- 21:12address? Darling? It is a small island. You would have found them
- 21:15anyway, But this way I have you all together. I want you.
- 21:21One false movement, I will shoot to kill that goes even for you.
- 21:25Professor? Who are you? What do you want of us? We only
- 21:26want you profess already. Others we will have to bury at sea. It's
- 21:32a joke. It's all some kind of a crazy joke. Yes, not
- 21:37a very funny joke, but a joke, Miss Martin. You will see
- 21:40how fafee jokes. Mister Motto, you won't get away with, Darling.
- 21:44Do not waste any more time. The carriage waiting in front of the house.
- 21:47Now ship sails with the tire ship. Where are you taking the book?
- 21:49Arrest Darling? It is a filthy city, but we are most kind
- 21:52to scientists. A private will also yourselves with indoor plumbing. Now, please
- 21:59to come forward one time and walk out of this door, and do not
- 22:03forget darlings. Once out of the door, there is not one but four
- 22:06guns on you. The gentlemen in the car are well armed. You first
- 22:11profit, mister Motor. You had better do as he says. Put this
- 22:15up very well, now, mister Moto. As I emerged from the patio,
- 22:32I saw that Deffi's threat was far from idol. Parked at the door
- 22:37of the house was a car containing foremen, each with a carbine train directly
- 22:41on a screen. They got out of the car, and while two stood
- 22:45god, the other two carefully searched us for weapons. Before the search was
- 22:51complete, I heard a gun fired behind me. The wounded man who stumbled
- 22:55up the house door was steady im as he did. I believe he is,
- 23:07mister Lloyd. Let me look at him. I want to make sure.
- 23:10Yeah, yeah, I fixed him. Arena you all right? Yes,
- 23:14my dear Yanna sure took off in a hurry, didn't I yes,
- 23:18I was quite surprised. I wonder why, for the same reason that mister
- 23:21MNEs could preferred to bury the rest of us at sea rather than kill us
- 23:25on the spot. They did not wish to become involved with the island police
- 23:27or by the wains Lloyd, how did you manage it? I had a
- 23:30twenty five caliber of barber strapped to my leg with adhesive tape. Indeed,
- 23:34a wise precaution. Where are we going from here, mister Mono? I
- 23:37think we had better get the professor aboard a plane and back to the States
- 23:41as quickly as possible. Next time we may not be so lucky with your
- 23:52systems for local government. We obtained special plane in a matter of minutes,
- 23:56and in less than three hours we were back in Ellend and South Carolina.
- 24:00When we arrived at the professor's house, both missus Sloane and the nurse had
- 24:04retired for the night. The professor too, was looking as though he needs
- 24:07the mess. I do not think we should disturb my wife. She has
- 24:11probably been given a sedative, and Heaven knows she needs all the sleep she
- 24:15can get. Mister Moto, I don't know how we can ever thank you.
- 24:18On the contrary, you have mister Lloyd to thank for everything, and
- 24:22they accompliment you on your quick thinking, mister Lloyd. Coming from you,
- 24:25that's a real compliment, mister Monol. However, I should like to know
- 24:29what you abstracted from Feffy's pocket when you leaned over him in your anxiety to
- 24:33make sure he was dead. Okay, you caught me here. They are
- 24:40honest, Hellan, I wouldn't have known he had the diamonds if one of
- 24:42them had nam rolled out of his pocket when he faust. I would like
- 24:45to believe you, mister Lloyd, if only to clear Professor Slowe. But
- 24:48I don't understand these diamonds. I was using them experimentally. How did that
- 24:52fellow get hold of them? We better tell him everything? Hell I guess
- 24:56you're right. You see, mister Moto, the professor was experimenting with the
- 25:02diamonds in order to study the behavior of hydro carbon at very high temperatures.
- 25:06And when mister Lloyd learned that a side effect of the atomic radiation was to
- 25:11turn cheap yellow diamonds into high quality blue diamonds, he was very, very
- 25:15interested. How did you know that I know that radium will destroy the impurities
- 25:19in diamonds. When I learned that you had invested heavily in yellow diamonds.
- 25:23Mister Lloyd, I suspected that you might have learned another method of making expensive
- 25:29diamonds out of cheap ones through Miss Martin's knowledge of the professor's experiments with diamonds
- 25:34under atomic radiation. Helen had nothing to do with all this, mister Morty.
- 25:38You've got to believe that I do not know what to believe, mister
- 25:41Lloyd. Okay, if that's the way you feel about it, try to
- 25:45prove that those diamonds are the ones I've bought. Just try it. Mister
- 25:53Lloyd was, of course quite right. I could prove nothing. I accepted
- 25:59the professors in the to stay the night and retired the guest room, but
- 26:02I could not sleep. The puzzle of the professor's strange elopement was still not
- 26:07solved to my satisfaction, and I was still unable to form a link between
- 26:11that and the mystery of the diamonds. As I lay awake, struggling with
- 26:15the problem, I became aware of curious honey noise rising through the floor from
- 26:22the room directly beneath me. I put on a robe and tiptoed down the
- 26:26stairs. Half Way down, I observed the figure of a young woman moving
- 26:32about the sun porch. She had rolled an X ray machine over against the
- 26:37wall. I was standing directly behind her before she was aware of my presence.
- 26:44Mister Motto, you surtled me. That is not surprising, MISSGUSSI I
- 26:49woke up and heard a humming sound. The X ray machine must be out
- 26:55of order. You would only have to unplug it from the electric outlet if
- 26:57that were the case. Miscuff, Oh, yes, because I must be
- 27:03had to sleep. I never thought you had been thinking very busily, miss
- 27:07Guff, but unfortunately in the wrong manner. What do you mean? First,
- 27:12let us stop this machine? There? You see how idiot is Miscuff.
- 27:19I am not going to waste any words with you. You have your
- 27:22choice. Missus Sloane will probably die either you stand trial for her murder or
- 27:29you take your chances with another charge. What do you want to do?
- 27:33How much do you now? You are employed of a nurse in this house.
- 27:36When Missus Sloane was ill of pneumonia, something happened that made it convenient
- 27:41to you that she remain ill. You achieved that by training X rays through
- 27:45this wall to her bed in the next room. The effect of those rays
- 27:49was to make her a chronic invalid, suffering from punishing anemia. Why would
- 27:53I want to do a thing, I said, because of her diamonds.
- 27:56The professor never thought of the manner cherry significance of what he was doing.
- 28:00When he got a certain reading under X rays, he recorded it and forgot
- 28:06about the diamond They weren't valuable as lawing. On the contrary, they had
- 28:10become very valuable, so valuable that mister Lloyd could not put them on the
- 28:15market without exciting suspicion. You finally contacted a group of international criminals who agreed
- 28:22to market the diamonds for you, but for a price or christ That price
- 28:26was to deliver Professor Sloan behind the iron curtain. But mister Lloyd was not
- 28:33a traitor. He told Miss Martin the whole story. She decided on our
- 28:37own that it was necessary for the professor to disappear for a while. Since
- 28:41the Professor was attracted to Miss Martin, it wasn't hard for her to talk
- 28:45him into an elopement. It might all be true, she said, I
- 28:51have a choice, Yes, Miss Guff, would you rather be hanged for
- 28:56murder or treason? That's not much of a choice, mister motto. No,
- 29:02but at an eminent Japanese sage once said, he who has a choice
- 29:07has trouble. You have just heard the world's greatest sacred agent, Mister I
- 29:30a Moto in the strange elopement of Professor Sloan. James Monks has starred as
- 29:37mister Moto. The script was written by Robert Tolman and directed by Arthur Hannah.
- 29:44Mister Moto is produced by Doris Quinlan for Carol Irwin. Members of the
- 29:48cast were Julie Stevens, Laurada Freebus, Mason Adams, Bill Smith, Frank
- 29:56Silvera, and Jane Gillespie. The music I was transcribed and this is Ray
- 30:02Barrett speaking, And now here with a preview of next week's story is mister
- 30:26I a Moto. Next week a story of intrigue involving a band of smugglers,
- 30:34a faithless wife, and a very potent cocktail in the case of the
- 30:41Dragon Martini. And now may the sevignity of an October evening brings sleep to
- 31:08your waking eyes, and there you away upon a fragrance of nice blooming jasmine,
- 31:15in the tranquility of a summer Garden reflected in the still Pool of Untroubled
- 31:23Dreams. Good Night, The Night's program came to you from our NBC studios
- 31:48in Radio City, New York. Raymonland and Joan Fontaine star on their gil
- 31:52tomorrow on NBC Welcome Back Well. I love motos jab at the end,
- 32:02clearly disgusted with the treacherous person. A definite return to form because I was
- 32:10thinking, after the strong method and the crooked log, we were kind of
- 32:15getting away from the the whole thing that made Moto distinct, But definitely a
- 32:24return. The one thing that I noticed in this episode that I really found
- 32:30humorous is mister Moto is a secret agent and everybody seems to know it,
- 32:37so it's not much of a secret. Now we are about to announce our
- 32:42planned news shows for our fifth season coming up. I should mention that during
- 32:51this listener support campaign, we will actually a presenting the John J. Malone
- 32:59Store starting on September the third. Those will carry us into the next season.
- 33:06But samit emailed me to ask about missing shows or how many episodes of
- 33:12Mister Moto we had, and Sam Wright's thanks. I find it heartbreaking to
- 33:16realize that when I saw a radio station throwing away thousands of records of OTR
- 33:21shows when I was a kid. That missing gyms, like the missing shows
- 33:24from this and other series could have been tucked away in that collection as it
- 33:28went into the landfill. The probability of new shows emerging today are pretty much
- 33:34wishful thinking. I subscribe to many old time radio podcasts and find yours to
- 33:38be the most informed of you clearly take time with the project and enjoy what
- 33:44you are doing. I'm hardened to see you making new media projects and generating
- 33:47revenue with them. Well, thanks so much, sam Well. I do
- 33:53want to say that there are some shows that are emerging lost episodes and those
- 34:04will actually be included in our in our program is when we get into the
- 34:10announcements. But I definitely feel, I definitely feel you that it is a
- 34:17you know, it is a sad situation that there are so many episodes that
- 34:22have been lost and so a few of them are really cared for by producers.
- 34:30What we have today is the result really of grassroots fans efforts to preserve
- 34:36these programs, and there are some that I think that are in collections.
- 34:39But we will get onto that in a moment. All right, we have
- 34:44some additional listener comments, but I do want to just go ahead and list
- 34:49off the programs we will be bringing you next year. Now, as I
- 34:52mentioned, we'll be playing the Mister Malone series for the first part. It'll
- 35:00basically start this season and go into next season. Then the series that we
- 35:05will run will include Mister Chameleon, the Case Book of Gregory Hood, the
- 35:14Man from Homicide and Homicide. Okay, and then I'm going to do something
- 35:20I have not done the entire series yet, and we're going to repeat a
- 35:24series. This will be followed by Pat Novak for Hire. Now. The
- 35:30reason I'm repeating Pat Novak for Hire, Now, there are two reasons I
- 35:37do this. On one hand, we've had a lot of listener requests to
- 35:40repeat. That's not the main reason. The big reason though, is I've
- 35:46always been fascinated by how the original listeners of Dragnet that Pat Novak for Hire
- 35:54and Dragnet actually overlap. There were a number of weeks where you would have
- 36:01Jack Webb Plane Pat Novac, you know, who was constantly battling with rupton
- 36:10incompetent police force, and then also in the same week you could hear Jack
- 36:15Webb Plane, Joe Friday on UH and I find that just such an interesting
- 36:23juxtaposition. So we're gonna have that juxtaposition of drag Net and Pat Novac for
- 36:30Hire for four weeks, and then Pat Novac for Hire will be followed by
- 36:36Johnny Dollar the Lost Episodes. The situation is that we've come across some episodes
- 36:43of yours truly, Johnny Dollar, that were not available when we played some
- 36:49of the previous Dollars. Now, usually I would if it were the same
- 36:57actors, I would just go ahead and play the shows. However, in
- 37:02this case, these were actors prior to Bob Bailey. I don't want to
- 37:09wait till after we finished the Bailey shows, which will be four years away.
- 37:14So we're going to do these programs. We have three episodes where we
- 37:21just have never played them before. Plus we'll have one episode which we only
- 37:24had as a rehearsal, but we'll be able to bring you the network version,
- 37:30which will be a much nicer one. So for four weeks we'll have
- 37:35Johnny Dollar the Lost Episodes. And we're also waiting till after we finished the
- 37:39three days a week with the Johnny Dollar serials because that would be too much
- 37:44of a good thing. Then we'll have Easy Money, which is one of
- 37:49my favorite series, and then the very last week of the season will begin
- 37:54Crime in Peter Chambers, a very solid lineup. I hope you'll be lessen
- 38:00all right. Some listener questions about other series. Rebecca ask do you ever
- 38:07get any Perry Mason shows? The answers no, Perry Mason shows during the
- 38:14Golden Age of radio were serialized in soap opera fashion, and basically there's no
- 38:21complete case story arc available, so we'll not be able to do Perry Mason.
- 38:28And Robert asked, can you not get the Shadow shows? The answer
- 38:34to that one is also a negative. Most of the Shadow wouldn't fit into
- 38:39the overall theme of the great detectors of old time radio really more horror and
- 38:47adventuring. But more than that, that tends to be one where there's a
- 38:52copyright claim by the owners of the Shadow. I'm dubious about that, and
- 39:02I don't believe it is particularly valid, just because old time radio shows were
- 39:10never a part of copyright protection. In other countries such as the UK and
- 39:15Australia, it's basically part of their law that broadcast prior to a certain date.
- 39:22Nineteen fifty seven in England and nineteen sixty nine in Australia are not covered
- 39:29under copyright, but there's more ambiguity for people to wiggle with, and I,
- 39:37you know, I do my best to stay ahead of that, which
- 39:40you know, was one reason why I did not include any William Johnstone episodes
- 39:46of The Shadow as part of the the app extras, because I want to
- 39:52be sure that we're able to keep this show, you know, not you
- 39:58know, running into difficulty or going dealing with lawsuits or with the issues around
- 40:07the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, rather just bringing you some the best quality shows
- 40:14we can. And then we have Doug who says, just found your podcast.
- 40:17Love it got to catch up? Well, thanks so much, Doug.
- 40:21A lot of people have tried and several have been able to catch up,
- 40:27and thanks so much for commenting. All right, well, that will
- 40:31do it for today, and I think we'll have a shorter after show since
- 40:36we don't have nearly as many new programs to announce, but join us back
- 40:40here tomorrow. We'll have some new Wednesday programs to talk about, and we'll
- 40:46also continue on with the Bennett matter. In the meantime, Senor comments to
