- 0:07Good afternoon, welcome in Miller and Condon on the air
- 0:10with you on a Wednesday as we talk the world of sports.
- 0:14Taking you till 2O clock here this afternoon before Lucas and
- 0:18Sean take over the airwaves. Off the bench until 5 O clock in
- 0:21overtime. Iowa takes you home from 5:00
- 0:23until 6. Trent Condon joined today by our
- 0:27man Nick Marvitz back in with us once again locked on cyclones.
- 0:30Nick, good to see you. Good hanging out with you
- 0:32yesterday and well you didn't get scared away, you're back for
- 0:35day #2. I did so while you were willing
- 0:37to have me back. I can't believe it.
- 0:39Two days in a row. It's going to be so much fun.
- 0:41Absolutely. We got a lot to get into here
- 0:43today. Coming up on the guest list.
- 0:44We'll kick things off coming up at about the bottom of the hour.
- 0:47Some Hawkeye talk with Elliott Clough is going to join us from
- 0:50hawkeyeinsider.com. Part of 24/7 Sports will get the
- 0:53latest in the recruiting world as Iowa continues to dabble and
- 0:57work the Not Trace for Portal anymore back into the
- 1:01traditional high school recruiting.
- 1:02Some potential big news coming up for Iowa, a state later today
- 1:06with an announcement of Donovan Davis.
- 1:08Who's going to make his announcement now Iowa is amongst
- 1:10his top five, but boy, all indications are that he is going
- 1:13to be a cyclone. And is it a 6:00 announcement?
- 1:16Do you remember offhand when that is I?
- 1:17Want to say it was 745? A little bit later on, another
- 1:21Milwaukee guy, another Wisconsin guy, and we know TJ Altsenberger
- 1:25definitely has his sights set there and he has done incredibly
- 1:28well. Very fertile territory.
- 1:30We'll talk some recruiting and more coming up with Elliot
- 1:32Clough here at about 12:25. Then the 1:00 hour begins with
- 1:35David Kaplan. Our weekly conversation with the
- 1:37cap man as we will talk a lot of things.
- 1:39The Cubs remain red hot. Their second consecutive walk
- 1:42off victory, the Bears now looking forward coming off the
- 1:45draft and how can all the pieces are fitting together for the
- 1:48Bears? A year ago, of course, had so
- 1:50much go their way, those bounces that didn't go their way the
- 1:53year previous. And then the NFL seems to even
- 1:56itself out. What the Bears are going to do
- 1:57and if there's still more to be done for that roster, we'll talk
- 2:00about that and more. Plus maybe a White Sox question.
- 2:04They're playing well. I didn't anticipate this was
- 2:07going to happen, but yes, maybe even the White Sox a question.
- 2:10We'll jump in there with David Kaplan that comes up to kick off
- 2:13the 1:00 hour. Well, Nick, we go through and a
- 2:16pretty big story percolated that we touched on a little bit
- 2:19yesterday. But it becomes even more real.
- 2:22A story from Ross Dellinger of Yahoo as he talked about, once
- 2:25again, the possibility of an expansion to a 24 team College
- 2:29Football Playoff bracket. And now the coaches are behind
- 2:33it. And it's, you know, so
- 2:34interesting because for so many years in the SEC, everyone was
- 2:39in lockstep. You didn't hear coaches, you
- 2:41didn't hear administrators, you didn't hear commissioner, none
- 2:44of that. It was all they were having the
- 2:46same conversation. It was the same talking points.
- 2:48The solidarity that the SEC had was a big part of the strength
- 2:52that they had, coupled with obviously the great football
- 2:54that went along with it. Now you're seeing fractures from
- 2:57a couple weeks ago when Greg Byrne, the athletic director at
- 2:59Alabama, said, now you know what, the SEC championship game,
- 3:01maybe it doesn't matter anymore. I mean, when you're hearing that
- 3:04from a sitting athletic director and one at Alabama, that
- 3:07obviously, I think caused a little bit of a stir.
- 3:09And now from Kirby Smart to other coaches saying, you know
- 3:13what, a 2014 playoff might not be a bad thing.
- 3:17They were steadfast. They wanted the 16.
- 3:19Is it feeling inevitable to you that we're going to get a 2014
- 3:22bracket? Absolutely.
- 3:23I mean, up until this point, it was kind of just like a theory,
- 3:26a possibility. It did feel like it was going to
- 3:29happen, but there wasn't AI felt like a lot of backing behind it.
- 3:32Now with this AFCA board all kind of getting in line and all
- 3:36these coaches are like, you know what let's just go ahead and do
- 3:39it. I, I feel feel like obviously
- 3:41this board isn't going to make the decision, but there's enough
- 3:44support, I would say that's public now that it really does
- 3:47feel inevitable. The other big component of this
- 3:50is the discontinuation of conference championship games.
- 3:54It changes the way that we look at college football, what a
- 3:57championship means, those kind of things.
- 3:59But in the grand scheme of it, to get more playoff games, to
- 4:02double your amount of playoff games that you would get a
- 4:05little bit more as you go from 11 playoff games in the 12 team
- 4:07structure up to 23 games. Now that would be part of this.
- 4:11Now, not all these games are going to be great.
- 4:13Not all the games are certainly going to rate in the way that
- 4:16we're used to, but as a bowl structure continues to diminish
- 4:20more and more teams, and that was a point that Kirby Smart
- 4:22made, is look, bowl games don't have the same meaning.
- 4:25And it's something that is been just a downward trend now for a
- 4:28decade. You could still have some of the
- 4:30bowl games you can still have them for.
- 4:32Keep the Pop Tart bowl. But right, yeah, pop top bro,
- 4:34you want to put a seven and five Iowa State team against A7 and
- 4:38five Utah team, Sure, you do things like that, that's fine.
- 4:41But it's ultimately about the championship.
- 4:44And you know, one talking point that I guess has bothered me
- 4:47during this whole time is the people that say the regular
- 4:52season is going to be devalued. If you go this route, it's going
- 4:55to devalue something that has certainly impacted college
- 4:57basketball because for the most part, you know, the good teams
- 5:00are going to get in regular season game just doesn't have
- 5:02the same kind of weight. My argument is I think this is
- 5:05going to bring even more teams into the fold.
- 5:08And for so many years, once we got to November, we could cross
- 5:11off 90% of the teams that had nothing at least playoff wise to
- 5:15play for at that point. When you build this thing out,
- 5:19suddenly that November Iowa Wisconsin game, both teams come
- 5:22in six and three. You know, something like that.
- 5:26Well, there's real weight on this.
- 5:27You win those final three games of the regular season, you get
- 5:29to 9 and three. You got a possibility.
- 5:31You go into November with something that is realistic,
- 5:34attainable, and that's going to, I believe, open up more.
- 5:37And if you had that Iowa, Wisconsin game, look here
- 5:40different, but in the South suddenly, hey, there might be a
- 5:43playoff bid on the line here. This is an important game for
- 5:45the playoff. How many more people, casual
- 5:47fans are going to be watching those?
- 5:49Not the top tier games, not the Alabama, Auburn, but that next
- 5:53tier of game. I think it's going to involve
- 5:55more people, more things to play for.
- 5:56And I think in the end, certainly when we get towards
- 5:59the end of the season, it's going to help college football,
- 6:01the ratings and the viewership because you're going to have
- 6:04more games that actually matter for a playoff.
- 6:05No, I think you're exactly right, because the argument is
- 6:08that by doing this, we're diminishing the value of the
- 6:11loss, right? The loss doesn't matter as much
- 6:13early on in the season. But what that does is you can
- 6:16take those losses and it extends your season out.
- 6:19So if you if you're Iowa State and you lose Week 2, you in the
- 6:23in the 14 playoff, you are not making it.
- 6:25It just it was a reality. You had to go perfect, you
- 6:28probably had to beat some ridiculous non conference teams,
- 6:31win your Big 12 championship. Like that was the reality of the
- 6:34situation. Now, if you expand it out to 24,
- 6:37what can Iowa State lose? Probably 2, maybe 3 depending on
- 6:41where their losses are in their schedule, especially if they're
- 6:43early and it's a, you know, really good opponents or
- 6:46whatever the case is. That brings a lot of value to
- 6:49those November, you know, late late season games.
- 6:52And so I actually think that's maybe the only benefit of this.
- 6:55When you touched on the conference championship thing
- 6:57there, that was something we talked about yesterday with the
- 6:59automatic bids. And what does the Big 12 do
- 7:02with, with only two? If they get 2 bids, then it's
- 7:05like what we've already kind of devalued that game.
- 7:07If both teams in the, in the, in the, excuse me, in the game are
- 7:11guaranteed a spot, what does that even mean?
- 7:13I, I don't love the idea of getting away from conference
- 7:16championships, but it feels like we've been shifting that
- 7:19direction for a while now with ring culture and with it really
- 7:23all being about the ultimate national championship anyway.
- 7:27And so I guess if this is a byproduct of the larger playoff,
- 7:32which, you know, I think making the playoffs is there's always
- 7:35that like once you're in the dance, you got a chance, right?
- 7:37And so I, I, I don't love the, the disassembly of the
- 7:41conference championship, but if you know, if it has to happen, I
- 7:43guess it has to happen. Chip in the chair, that's all
- 7:45you need. Get in there, make a run and be
- 7:47that Cinderella. And a lot of teams in the middle
- 7:50of the conferences are going to have that hope that they can do
- 7:52that. So another component to this is
- 7:54something I, I don't know if I mentioned it to you, but I know
- 7:57our listeners are definitely hurt going back to 2020.
- 8:00I absolutely love the idea that the Big 10 had where they had
- 8:03that final week of the season. Obviously it was the weird year.
- 8:05Big 10, what do they have 6 scheduled games?
- 8:07I think it was. But the final week they're just
- 8:10going to bat you up. Iowa was supposed to play
- 8:11Michigan. Michigan chickened out.
- 8:13They would have got throttled and you talk about a, a, you
- 8:16know, just sliding doors moment. Michigan would have bump
- 8:19bumbled. I was playing great at that
- 8:20point in the year. They would beat him by 40.
- 8:22Then they would have played Ohio State.
- 8:23They also opted out of that game.
- 8:24They probably would have got beat by 60.
- 8:26Jim Harbaugh would have been fired.
- 8:28Jim Harbaugh would have been gone as the Michigan head coach
- 8:31if they played those final two games they were supposed to that
- 8:33season. It didn't happen last.
- 8:35Jim Harbaugh goes on to win a national championship.
- 8:37But one of those sliding door moments that could happen
- 8:40throughout the course of a season.
- 8:41But the idea was perfect. It was 2020.
- 8:44Teams are opting out. That was different.
- 8:45But you're going to go into the final week of the season, we
- 8:48don't know who you're going to play.
- 8:49You're going to play somebody and you probably have to set up
- 8:52beforehand. Look, half the teams you're
- 8:53going to be at home. Here's the other half that are
- 8:55going to be Rd. so you can at least have your schedule,
- 8:58equitable tickets already going to be sold, those kind of
- 8:59things. But you go into a final weekend.
- 9:02That is actually what the new PAC 12 is doing this season.
- 9:06They are going to do something very similar to that.
- 9:09Now, they still do have their conference championship game,
- 9:11but this is going to happen the final week of the schedule, week
- 9:1413. That is November 28th.
- 9:16And they have half their teams that are are designated as home
- 9:19teams, the other half road and they're going to match it up.
- 9:22And it might have something to do with who ultimately gets to
- 9:24that championship. But this thought process behind
- 9:27it, I think does make a ton of sense.
- 9:28And it makes more sense for a big 10 because suddenly you look
- 9:32and you say, you know what, I don't know if this nine and
- 9:35three team has quite enough on their resume or even an 8 and
- 9:39three team, but you know what, you take them on somebody very
- 9:42similar to them, probably the same kind of resume.
- 9:44And the winner of that game that gets into a championship, I
- 9:47think it'd be huge. The problem is you have Ohio
- 9:51State, Michigan in that final weekend.
- 9:53You're not going to get rid of that.
- 9:55We know the television, that revenue that comes out of that
- 9:57is the highest rated game every single year.
- 9:59You're not going to go away from that is during that what is now
- 10:04championship week. Is that still going to be
- 10:06available or are we already going to be playing College
- 10:09Football Playoff game? So that's the part of the
- 10:10calendar that makes that a little bit trickier.
- 10:12Yeah, that part of the year is is interesting.
- 10:14I think it does make sense from the perspective of how large the
- 10:18conferences are. And we talked about yesterday,
- 10:20you could end up playing the entire bottom half or the entire
- 10:22top half of a conference. And it just puts you in a weird
- 10:25spot as far as like, did you lose all those top games?
- 10:28Well, are you the worst team in the conference?
- 10:29Probably not. But I do think you kind of
- 10:32laying all of that out makes me think we've got a reshift
- 10:35everything. Yeah, I don't think we're at a
- 10:37spot where we can make a tiny tweak.
- 10:39You know, we just tighten the lug nut and the tires on.
- 10:41We got a we got to get a whole new set of tires at this point.
- 10:45So if that, you know, changes when rivalry week is, are we
- 10:49doing that, you know, Week 4 early, early on in the season,
- 10:52which allows for some back end shifting, you know, I think is
- 10:56that the best idea? No, probably not.
- 10:58But my point is we really have to get to where we're reframing
- 11:02everything. And that comes back to like
- 11:04Army, Navy is probably going to be involved and the structure of
- 11:08the playoff obviously is in question.
- 11:09And then bowl, like you mentioned, bowls are very
- 11:12different now than they were 10 years ago.
- 11:14And so are they still a part of the playoff?
- 11:17Because how many bowl games then?
- 11:18Is it only the first round? Is it the last five games?
- 11:21All of that gets called into question.
- 11:23And I think if they're willing to do it, that's the best way to
- 11:26go about this. I don't think you try to keep
- 11:28what college football was. And I'd love the the history of
- 11:32it, but I think you have to go with a fresh start.
- 11:34Yes, yeah. Something new, New ideas.
- 11:37There are no. You've been in those meetings,
- 11:38right? There are no no, they are stupid
- 11:41ideas, but let's hope that some good ones definitely come out of
- 11:44that. So that is the latest on what
- 11:46looks to be the possibility of this thing changing won't be for
- 11:49this year. 2026 is locked in. It will be a 12 team College
- 11:52Football Playoff. But in the future, it feels like
- 11:54more more momentum continuing for us to jump past 16 and go
- 11:58right into the 2014 model top eight teams, you know, opening
- 12:02round by and much like the structure is well, in fact, the
- 12:04exact same structure of what the FCS playoffs look like the other
- 12:08component. So we have to continue with this
- 12:11charade with the bowl games, the bowl games being a part of it.
- 12:15the Rose Bowl. I know huge Ben do a Rose Bowl
- 12:17loved it. But everything in this structure
- 12:21and the amount of money that is being left on the table.
- 12:23You have the current structure now where we get to the quarter
- 12:25final round of these games are playing on both sides.
- 12:28You have all the travel that's involved 3 consecutive travel
- 12:32dates for even the best of the best teams.
- 12:34Then you also have it where the top teams, the top four, don't
- 12:37get to host a playoff game when we get to the semifinals.
- 12:40I'm fine with it, but I think this structure would be so much
- 12:43better these games on campus. What's better, watching a game
- 12:46in Arizona at a Fiesta Bowl between whoever or seeing that
- 12:52on a college campus, seeing it, Utah, Oregon, not even the top
- 12:56tier teams that we see all the time, but those teams that have,
- 12:59you know, an incredible season and have that opportunity to
- 13:01host a playoff game, host 1/4 final game, just how huge that
- 13:04would be. I go back to the first year they
- 13:06spent a playoff a couple years back that Friday night with
- 13:09Notre Dame playing host to Indiana and just that
- 13:11environment, how cool that was. It was God awful cold.
- 13:14It was just it was brutal in terms of the elements, but the
- 13:18stage, the pomp and circumstance, what makes college
- 13:20football what it is. We don't see the AFC and FC
- 13:23championship games. Nope, sorry.
- 13:25We're going to Dallas because we know the Cowboys aren't going to
- 13:28be there. That's not how it is.
- 13:29Having those home sites, I think would go a long ways.
- 13:31And that's another part that I hope they do cut off the bowl
- 13:35games. They can still be around.
- 13:36They can still do something in their own realm.
- 13:39But the amount of money and we hear every athletic department
- 13:41out there, every conference talking about we need more
- 13:44money. Here's a way to generate more
- 13:46money and not give it to these guys in their ugly Blazers.
- 13:48Absolutely. Think back to when Iowa State
- 13:50won their tenth game of the season against Kansas State.
- 13:52I was in the stance for that game and it was frigid cold and
- 13:57it was packed. I mean, everyone was there to
- 13:59see a historic moment like that and in the cap to the great
- 14:02season that was with Jaden and Jalen.
- 14:04And you know, it's obviously Farmageddon too.
- 14:06So there was a little bit of an extra added effect there.
- 14:10But that that kind of environment is what makes
- 14:13college football so special. And to take that away from the
- 14:16playoffs, to me feels like a disservice to the sport.
- 14:19I, I, I feel like you really got to lean into because in my
- 14:23opinion, college fan bases are so much more enthusiastic than
- 14:26in the pros. And I think you just, you got to
- 14:29lean into that. And that's where, you know, I
- 14:32think that we get back to that big shifts are probably going to
- 14:34have to be made. Let's jump over to what we saw
- 14:37last night. What a start in the NBA.
- 14:40We're watching the Pistons for a while.
- 14:42They pull away late in that one against the Cavs, but late night
- 14:45watching the Lakers and the Thunder, is this thing just
- 14:48over? I mean, is this just the
- 14:49Oklahoma City Invitational and OKC is going to run away from
- 14:53everybody? We saw the Spurs and the concern
- 14:55for them, and I know they were a tricky matchup for the Thunder
- 14:58during the regular season. It's money minus money right
- 15:00now. You got to lay it in order to
- 15:02play the Thunder to win the NBA championship.
- 15:04But are we just setting ourselves up for it's
- 15:06inevitable. It's OKC and everybody else.
- 15:09That's kind of the question that I had yesterday when we were
- 15:11walking through the bracket. I was like, I don't, I don't see
- 15:14anyone that is that good. I mean, there are going to be
- 15:16challenges. They're probably not going to
- 15:18sweep their way to a championship.
- 15:20But for somebody to win four games out of seven, of course
- 15:24against them, I, I, I find that hard to really put together.
- 15:29I'm with you watching last night it did and it didn't even feel
- 15:32that the Thunder played their a game last night.
- 15:35They hit 13 threes. They they played pretty well and
- 15:39they're just toying with the Lakers.
- 15:41Reeves look completely out of sorts and you can see that's a
- 15:43guy coming off an injury and he was not the guy that you
- 15:46certainly anticipate 3 of 16 from the floor.
- 15:49That's going to show up in a big time way because they needed his
- 15:51scoring. But that's overall with this
- 15:53Lakers team. They don't have a beat enough.
- 15:55So taking it the other direction, we'll steal game one
- 15:58as we talked about yesterday, Anthony Edwards now listed as
- 16:01questionable for tonight. I don't think he's going to go.
- 16:04I think he used the rest. But that aside, you're OK C, you
- 16:08got to pick your opponent in the Western Conference finals.
- 16:11Do we think OC wants to see OKC wants to see the Spurs team that
- 16:14did give them trouble this year? Or this tough, gritty, physical
- 16:18Minnesota team. Who would be their choice?
- 16:21I think you'd probably lean Spurs, in this case the
- 16:24Timberwolves. If they win out in this series,
- 16:27I think they're a much hotter team, a scarier momentum wise
- 16:31team. And obviously it would depend
- 16:32kind of on where Anthony Edwards is at, but I think you would
- 16:36lean for the Spurs here. I and we talked yesterday about
- 16:39how like the Timberwolves might be an actually a worse matchup
- 16:42for the Thunder in that situation.
- 16:43I wanted to circle back to that Thunder Lakers matchup and just
- 16:46talk about really, really quick talking point.
- 16:49LeBron James 27 points. Yeah, this might be like, I
- 16:52don't I'm not taking the Lakers in the series.
- 16:55So let's take every game at face value and enjoy what what is
- 16:58kind of coming up on the end here of the last few years of
- 17:01LeBron. It's incredible.
- 17:03I just love watching him and I understand, yes, I have to be an
- 17:06MJ guy because of my age. We all have to be MJ guys and we
- 17:09have to shout down LeBron. I just enjoy greatness.
- 17:12I love watching him play so much and to see it at 41 years old,
- 17:16still doing at this level, 27 points.
- 17:18He wins a playoff series almost on his own against a Rockets
- 17:21team that was a minimum talented, not a good team, but
- 17:24talented on that. I I love LeBron.
- 17:27I do. We got it on the air.
- 17:29MJ still better but I do love you.
- 17:31Can do, but you can like both. Yes, absolutely.
- 17:34Now Kobe, that's a different kind of conversation and and the
- 17:36young Kobe guys, oh boy, they they were different back in the
- 17:39day, but that's a different conversation completely.
- 17:41NBA playoffs continue and we will get to see Game 2 coming up
- 17:45with the T Wolves tonight. That's at 8:30 tip off ESPN has
- 17:48that one Sixers, Knicks before it.
- 17:51See a bounce back from the Sixers tonight because I kind of
- 17:53do I think they they hang around at minimum tonight in New York.
- 17:56Yeah, I think we were talking about like maybe momentum after
- 17:59that went over the Celtics. Like that was kind of a, an
- 18:01exhausting couple of days. I, I, I give them a little bit
- 18:04of rest, a little bit of a reset.
- 18:07I think they're at least going to push the Knicks here.
- 18:09I don't think it's a walk in the park.
- 18:11You know, I, I think they maybe MB does a little bit more in
- 18:14this game and, and at least keeps it close.
- 18:17On the ice, John Heinz made the decision he's going to go with a
- 18:20different goalie for the Wild last night.
- 18:22They're going to go with Guptesen instead of what we saw
- 18:24from the wall in game #1 after giving up eight, nine goals
- 18:27overall in that one, didn't go very well.
- 18:30Guptesen gives up four. Empty nunder at the end, they
- 18:32lose 52. You just go back to Walstad, I
- 18:35guess in game three, which we have to wait quite a while
- 18:37before we get to game three. That is not going to be until
- 18:40Saturday, 3 days off. Kind of weird, but there's
- 18:43something going on in Minnesota. I think there was maybe the the
- 18:46women's team, I think maybe had ice.
- 18:48There was something weird. But regardless, going to have a
- 18:50lot of off days here and the decision making now for Heinz,
- 18:53what they're going to do in goal.
- 18:54They need the time off. They do not look like a better
- 18:57team than Colorado. Like if they were to win that
- 18:59game last night, it would have been a miracle.
- 19:01And right now it kind of feels like it's a the avalanche or the
- 19:06Thunder of the NHLA little bit to me and the wild are going to
- 19:10have to piece together something kind of ridiculous, which is why
- 19:13I didn't necessarily love the move to Gustafson.
- 19:16I I feel like they probably should have stuck with the wall.
- 19:19But now you have a chance to throw him back in.
- 19:21He's got a little rest, He can get the reset and you have to
- 19:23win game three. We talked about this like it's
- 19:25it is every games must win, but you can't go down O3 to this to
- 19:29this ABS team and expect to come back.
- 19:31Little baseball already underway, including the Brewers
- 19:34and the Cardinals. They just started their match up
- 19:36down in Saint Louis after the rain out last night.
- 19:39Cubs do it again. back-to-back walk off victories 3 to 2 in
- 19:42this 1-2 nights ago when Emiliano Pagan came in for the
- 19:46Reds, I just started chuckling because I saw him with the Twins
- 19:49and he was awful. Just absolutely brutal.
- 19:51I know he's got 6 saves this year.
- 19:53He's blown 3, including two nights ago.
- 19:55Then he goes down with a hamstring injury that looks
- 19:57scary as he was hobbling around out there on the bump.
- 20:00But the Cubs just keep winning and the winning streak continues
- 20:03at Wrigley Field. Teams put it all together, and
- 20:06though the NL Central looks to have a lot of good teams, a lot
- 20:09of teams at minimum that are going to be solid throughout the
- 20:11course of the year, the Cubs do appear to be on a different
- 20:14tier. Yeah, I think it's an exciting
- 20:15time to be a Cubs fan. I think obviously right now
- 20:18it's, you know, it's May, but you got to take it at face value
- 20:21and just enjoy, you know, 24 and 12.
- 20:23That's that's pretty good. Not going to.
- 20:24Lie, yeah, Dione solid and they get the victory as a winning
- 20:27streak in Wrigley continues for the Cubs, now 24 and 12 on the
- 20:31season, playing at 106 win pace so far on the season.
- 20:35We'll talk more Cubs coming up a little bit later on kick off the
- 20:381:00. Albert.
- 20:38David Kaplan will join us from Chicago and we'll get the latest
- 20:42on that talk, some White Sox talk, some Bulls, what they're
- 20:46going to do in their front office with the change happening
- 20:48there. And of course, get into the Cubs
- 20:49with Kathy and the Bears all coming up at 1:00.
- 20:52Coming up on the other side, we're going to talk some
- 20:54Hawkeyes. Elliott Clough is going to join
- 20:56us from 24/7 sports hawkeyeinsider.com.
- 20:59That is next. Nick Merivitz hanging out with
- 21:01me. Trent Condon It's Miller and
- 21:03Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 21:13Back with you, it's Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 21:16Network. Trent Condon, Nick Marvitz with
- 21:18you today taking you up until 2O clock before off the bench comes
- 21:21your way with Lucas and Sean from 2:00 until five.
- 21:25Time to talk Hawkeyes joining us from hawkeyeinsider.com.
- 21:29He is Elliott Clough as he joins us here today.
- 21:32Elliott, once again, great to talk with you, catch up with
- 21:35you. It is the quiet time, but you
- 21:38guys are always working over there at 24/7 Sports and
- 21:40recruiting seems to be kind of the the change now getting back
- 21:43into the recruiting territory. How you doing?
- 21:47Good, good, Trent. Yeah, for working our butts off
- 21:51like crazy with the NCAA Tournament.
- 21:54Then to the portal. It weirdly feels like we don't
- 21:57have a ton to do right now. But of course, yeah, recruiting,
- 22:01helping us out, getting a few commits here and there that that
- 22:04keeps us busy. No doubt about it, you guys are
- 22:07pumping out the content. You, Sean and David though I
- 22:10called on vacation. Do I have this right?
- 22:13You do, yeah. Yeah.
- 22:14He's he's out of the country, I think Cayman Islands.
- 22:18Is that technically AUS territory?
- 22:20I'm not sure. I don't know, asking the wrong
- 22:22guy. I I struggle at map tap every
- 22:24single day. So I'm struggling out that
- 22:25front. No, no on that one.
- 22:27Well, usually news does break at this point in time.
- 22:30What can you tell us? Let's start on basketball.
- 22:33So there was a couple of interviews that Coach Mccollum's
- 22:36done here recently. He was talking a little bit
- 22:38about potentially maybe adding another guard.
- 22:41Do you have any names, anybody that would make sense, anything
- 22:44that at least you look at and say this guy's still in the
- 22:46portal that would go there? Because the likelihood of Tavion
- 22:49Banks being back for another season appears to be pretty slim
- 22:53at this point. Those JUCO guys getting another
- 22:55year of eligibility, What can you tell us in basketball what
- 22:57they can potentially do with that final roster spot?
- 23:02Honestly, right now not a whole lot.
- 23:04It appears that, at least from what we know, that is the plan
- 23:08that they are still going to be looking and and considering
- 23:11what's in the portal, what's available particularly, it
- 23:15sounds like it would be more of a two guard, maybe a combo guard
- 23:18that can handle some some on ball duties, but doesn't sound
- 23:22like they're in a huge hurry to add a 15th player in the roster
- 23:27again, as the Fabion Banks thing is pretty much out of the
- 23:30question at this rate. But yeah, if I had to guess, it
- 23:33would be somebody that they feel like can can come off the bench
- 23:36and shoot a little bit. But as we know, Ben McCollum is
- 23:40very picky. So they're not going to, you
- 23:42know, go out and just take anybody that's available.
- 23:45So honestly, I'd love to give you names.
- 23:48I'd love to to tell you who I think they're going to go after.
- 23:51But right now it, it's seems really up in the air.
- 23:54I mean, the portal is just crazy.
- 23:57Who's available, who's not? And so I'd love to tell you
- 24:00names, but yeah, really, really have no idea at this point.
- 24:04We're we're tracking it as much as we can, but I don't think the
- 24:06staff really necessarily knows either regarding who they want,
- 24:10who they want to go after. I think that does make a whole
- 24:13lot of sense and maybe almost too early in the process though
- 24:15we're late in the process for the portal and seeing what they
- 24:18wanted to. Plus you're going to get these
- 24:19guys that are going to start to work out in the new guys.
- 24:22Speaking of the new guys, the two editions out of them out of
- 24:25the portal for Iowa. I know you've dug deep kind of
- 24:28into both of these guys and the way that they fit.
- 24:30And you know the one thing that with both of them though,
- 24:33they're completely different players. 173 the other a six one
- 24:35guard is how good both of them are in the pick and roll game.
- 24:38We know what I would does a ton. It's a whole lot of sets up
- 24:41front and you got that pick and roll game that's going to be
- 24:43going. Just on the surface, I was like,
- 24:46OK, these guys are all right. But boy, when he kind of look at
- 24:49the fit, it feels like McCullum got exactly what he was looking
- 24:51for. It does, especially with
- 24:54McKeever in the short roll. His ability to pass out of the
- 24:57pick and roll is really interesting.
- 24:59A really underrated part of it is his abilities as as a
- 25:04basketball player, because you don't look at that and think, Oh
- 25:06my gosh, he's dishing out five assists for a game.
- 25:09But yeah, that's something that you get from from a veteran big
- 25:14like him. And and then with Coleman, I
- 25:16mean, yeah, you've got to be able to be a good, good pick and
- 25:20roll guy, especially in the Missouri Valley Conference, one
- 25:23of the better mid major conferences in the country.
- 25:26So I think those two will complement each other really
- 25:29well. But then again, you throw in
- 25:31Kale Combs who had them on ball duties this last year and maybe
- 25:35a Tate stage who who has the ball in his hands a little bit
- 25:38more and that'll be really interesting and really
- 25:41complimentary to McKeever. And Cam Mani out got got much
- 25:44better as the year progressed in terms of how his ability to pass
- 25:48in the short roll. So I think having him, Jim and
- 25:52he'll come off the bench, having two guys that'll do that, that
- 25:55are good at that as well will be definitely something that Iowa
- 25:59and Ben McCollum will want to capitalize on.
- 26:02I know women's basketball that cycle, he's got that covered,
- 26:05but they're still looking to fill out that roster.
- 26:07Do you have any insight or anything that David has passed
- 26:10along to you about what's going on there?
- 26:12Because currently at 9 players, even if they're players that you
- 26:15don't anticipate are going to play, feels like you still have
- 26:18more work to do for Jan Jensen. Yeah, they got to fill out that
- 26:21roster, man. I, I, I would love to tell you
- 26:24I, I know what they're going to do.
- 26:26I you calling me for all the answers and I have none of them.
- 26:31But you know, I, I, I don't think Iowa is, is at a point
- 26:36where they're panicking is, you know, the fan base can and and
- 26:41does from time to time. I mean, they they are one of the
- 26:45blue bloods. Now, sure, the last two seasons
- 26:47haven't gone the way they wanted them to, especially this year,
- 26:49this this this spring, but I don't think Iowa is in a is in a
- 26:55situation where they're necessarily I I doomed, I guess.
- 27:01I mean, they've got the talent on the roster.
- 27:03There's still a blue effectively a blue blood at this point.
- 27:06You can capitalize off the Caitlin Clark era still and
- 27:08maybe you can go international and that's not something that I
- 27:12think Jan Jensen would would rule out at this point.
- 27:15Maybe you take a flyer on on a big or something like that in
- 27:21this class that has some raw ability that isn't quite there
- 27:24in terms of skill, but you you could see something pan out down
- 27:28the road. Yeah, I mean, it's obviously not
- 27:31ideal you'd like to have more players on your roster.
- 27:34It's just for depth sake at this point.
- 27:36But I think I think Jan Jensen and company are going to figure
- 27:40it out. I mean, the staff has
- 27:41connections with Sandra Barrett has been a big reason why
- 27:44they've been able to add several players, not just this year, but
- 27:47last year via the portal. So I, I have a feeling they'll
- 27:51figure it out. I, I, I think the concern is
- 27:54absolutely valid, especially being at this point in the in
- 27:57the offseason, but I also think that Jan Jensen and and company
- 28:02will will figure it out. Definitely don't want to go into
- 28:04year with 9 players. Couple injuries happen and
- 28:06you're in a world of hurt if it plays out in that fashion.
- 28:09Elliot Clark joining us hawkeyeinsider.com.
- 28:11You're on Miller and Condon on the Iowa sports Radio Network
- 28:13and one O 6.3 KX&O. Elliot, let's get into football.
- 28:17And before we talk some news and notes and coming out of spring
- 28:21and kind of get your perspective on that Monday night, we got to
- 28:24see an All Access feature Part 1, which I'm excited about
- 28:27because there's going to be even more and inside look into the
- 28:30Iowa Hawkeyes and the football program.
- 28:33Boy, this is something if you would have said five years ago,
- 28:35this is something that's going to be happening.
- 28:36I think you would have been laughed out of the room when you
- 28:38said that. But that kind of inside luck,
- 28:41even though it is curated obviously by the athletic
- 28:43department and their video staff and they're not going to put
- 28:46anything out there that the football staff doesn't want in
- 28:48there. Just it was really cool and
- 28:50something that just don't really think of Kurt Ferrands doing
- 28:53things like this, but he continues to evolve.
- 28:57Yeah, yeah, I mean, I agree. It was really interesting.
- 29:01Not something that a lot of programs have the, you know,
- 29:03fans have the luxury of getting from their programs.
- 29:06This is like a documentary style 15 minutes.
- 29:09Sure, we'd all love for it to be an hour, but man, I mean, some
- 29:13of the things that you get to see that that these kids
- 29:15experience at Iowa, you get to see it more or less first hand,
- 29:19I guess. And being part of the meeting
- 29:22rooms with even like a Seth Wallace, you get to see Coach
- 29:26Ference actually coach with these young offensive lineman.
- 29:30And I, I really thought it was interesting to see how involved
- 29:33he is day-to-day. Yeah, I'm aware he's the head
- 29:36coach, but the guy 70 years old, he could very easily delegate a
- 29:40lot of the things that he does on the day-to-day, especially in
- 29:43terms of coaching the offensive line with a guy like George
- 29:46Barnett. But no, he's right there
- 29:48involved. I thought that was really
- 29:50interesting. We got to look at a little bit
- 29:51at roster construction with Tyler Barn and and even Wallace
- 29:56talking about the line back and Group A little bit too.
- 29:59Yeah, it was super interesting. I, I mean, I think everybody got
- 30:02a little bit a little bit excited when the the trailer
- 30:06came out for for us to see something like that, especially
- 30:09in the offseason when we're just sitting on our hands for the
- 30:12next few months waiting for fall camp to come around to get more
- 30:15content. But yeah, Iowa's creative team
- 30:18is just so good with everything and hard to expect anything less
- 30:22with with something a little bit more long form like that.
- 30:25Yeah, definitely does feel like they're ahead of the curve a
- 30:27little bit as far as like releasing.
- 30:29It felt to me like a Hard Knocks for college, which was really
- 30:32neat. And I, I'd love to see Iowa
- 30:33State do the same thing looking to this upcoming season.
- 30:37I, I'm wondering what's going on in quarterback.
- 30:40Is it going to be Heklinski and is he going to be able to throw
- 30:42it around? I go back to the Iowa, Iowa
- 30:44State game last year, 83 yards for Gronowski on 13 to 24.
- 30:47And that wasn't that wasn't even the worst one.
- 30:50And so I'm curious, is Iowa going to figure out the passing
- 30:53game this upcoming year? Should I be scared?
- 30:58Well, you know, I think you should be scared for a lot of
- 31:01reasons covering Iowa State, but I wouldn't Iowa passing game at
- 31:07the top of those concerns. But yeah, I mean, I, I, you
- 31:12know, that's yeah, that's not really something that I think
- 31:15people should be concerned about that are playing against Iowa at
- 31:18this rate. Well proven otherwise.
- 31:20I think Pecklinsky and Brown are figuring some things out as we
- 31:24go here. Sorry, my dog digging in my
- 31:27recline office. You guys can hear that taking
- 31:30you off. Speaker Max Hey.
- 31:33Max OK. I'm sure, I'm sure you've had
- 31:35that happen before on live radio anyway.
- 31:39Anyway, yeah, I wouldn't put that at the top of the the
- 31:43concerns. If anything, I think I will will
- 31:45be able to run, run the ball pretty consistently against Iowa
- 31:49State, do a lot of the other things they traditionally do on
- 31:53on the football field in terms of the defensive prowess, the
- 31:56the power up front. But yeah, I mean, if if they're
- 32:00they are going to take a step forward, I I would imagine
- 32:02honestly, it would be the talent at receiver that does things
- 32:06more so than Jeremy Hecklinski or Hank Brown, especially early
- 32:08on in the season, considering what we got to see from Reese
- 32:11Vandersby at the end of the year last year and then DJ Venami
- 32:16ascending as well. That's tight end, obviously, but
- 32:18but throw in Tony Diaz too, and that group is is about as
- 32:23talented, at least between those three, as as Iowa's top options
- 32:27through the era have been in in quite a while.
- 32:29Elliot, when you look forward this, it felt like it became I
- 32:33think almost all of us like Ted Kulinski coming into spring,
- 32:37that race seems very tight. We know kind of what Kirk lights
- 32:40at the quarterback position. How different, how much sway,
- 32:43say and sway is it going to happen for Tim Lester and his
- 32:45choice here? When do you anticipate though
- 32:48they will name a starter? It's a long ways away, I get
- 32:51that. But is this something that we're
- 32:52going to know even a couple weeks before, you know, we get
- 32:55to that first game of the year? It could be we're waiting for
- 32:58the the press notes and the game notes to come out and see in the
- 33:00depth chart and that's the direction.
- 33:01What would you anticipate when we'll find out who that starter
- 33:04is going to be? It'll either be the first depth
- 33:07chart or we'll get a big OL or right there on the depth chart
- 33:10and everybody's like, we're still waiting.
- 33:13So we won't see until until that first series.
- 33:15That's what I would imagine is either we get that first depth
- 33:19chart and it's clear and we get a Kirk Ference telling us that
- 33:24he's rolling with Hecklinski or Brown, or we might even get the
- 33:27depth chart and say Hecklinski's at the top and we don't have the
- 33:31OR and Kirk will say, yeah, they're still neck and neck.
- 33:33We're not really sure who's going to run out there.
- 33:35I that would not surprise me in the slightest.
- 33:37So yeah, it's it's going to go down to the wire.
- 33:40We're not going to know for for a few months here.
- 33:42We're going to be sitting in limbo.
- 33:44And believe me, we're going to be talking to people behind the
- 33:46scenes. I mean, myself included with the
- 33:49the guy, Sean and and Dave through, through spring, we were
- 33:53really trying to see who has the edge, who has the the lead and
- 33:56it's really tightened up. I mean, personally, and I've
- 33:59said this a few times, I think heck, Kolinsky should be the
- 34:02guy. I don't know about what what you
- 34:04guys thought of or what you saw from from the open spring
- 34:07practice in the film we got, but I I thought heck, Klinsky was a
- 34:10lot better than people gave him credit for.
- 34:12I thought his ball placement was really good.
- 34:14I think he throws a really catchable ball.
- 34:16Hank Brown had a few misses, but he also had a few incompletions
- 34:20that were either off the hands of the receiver, there was play
- 34:23or pass interference called or on a ball that should have been
- 34:26caught, stuff like that. So yeah, man, I have a feeling
- 34:31be fielding questions like this for for a few months.
- 34:33It's it's going to go down to the wire.
- 34:35If I have, you know, any, any guess right now if one of them
- 34:39separates in in fall camp and it's clear by then, awesome.
- 34:43But for right now, yeah, it feels like it's going to go down
- 34:46right still still game week. So it's not game day.
- 34:49Yeah, I I think they're with you.
- 34:50I think we're going to see both quarterbacks in the first game
- 34:52of the year against Northern Illinois.
- 34:56Trent. Yes, Yeah, I'm going out there.
- 34:58I think we're going to see both of them.
- 34:59I think we're going to go back to that and well, Elliot, you
- 35:02were not on the beat at the time, but when we've gone
- 35:04through this, oh boy, it's it has not been fun, certainly for
- 35:07Iowa fans and your message boards.
- 35:08They'll be cooking over there at Hawkeye inside.
- 35:11Give us a a couple after getting the opportunity to see the guys
- 35:15on Saturday. It's one of 15 practices.
- 35:17I get that. But whatever a couple of your
- 35:19top of the fold items that came out of spring practice came out
- 35:22of the open practice that are going to stick with you through
- 35:24the spring and summer. The first thing that comes to
- 35:27mind is is linebacker and how those guys line up.
- 35:31Whether Buffington, it sounds like Buffington is going to play
- 35:33the mic, Montgomery at the will, which is an interesting
- 35:36combination. We're not usually used to seeing
- 35:38smaller compact guys at linebacker period for Iowa, let
- 35:42alone at that will spot where they prefer to have a guy who's
- 35:44a little bit longer and athletic.
- 35:46But so moving Montgomery over there there will be interesting
- 35:49assuming that does happen and continues into the fall.
- 35:52But that Leo linebacker spot is really interesting too because
- 35:56is we initially thought that Van Key Crick's would be in the fold
- 36:01for the will position, but it sounded more like he and Wyckoff
- 36:07have really had a solid competition at the Leo, that
- 36:11third linebacker spot that Iowa goes to in their more
- 36:15traditional base defense with the four three.
- 36:17So those two are competing. All the while Preston Reese has
- 36:20been on the sideline with an injury.
- 36:22So he hasn't been competing and he's a guy that a lot of people
- 36:25loved after what he's done on special teams.
- 36:27So that that Leo spot, though, it's not a guy that's on the
- 36:31field constantly. It it is one that's obviously
- 36:34really important, especially in the red zone.
- 36:36So to see who who comes out and ends up with the ones would be
- 36:39interesting, especially factoring in the use of Weiskopf
- 36:43and Reese as guys who are entering their third year,
- 36:45whereas Dan Key cricks is entering his fifth year.
- 36:47So we'll be 1 to to track there who plays free safety and cash.
- 36:53If it's if it's a Lutmer at cash or if he's sticking at free
- 36:57safety like he played during the spring game with Jacob Wallace
- 37:01at at cash would be really, really interesting as a red
- 37:05shirt freshman, but getting put into such an important position
- 37:09or if Anthony Hawkins does start to rise up, rise up and and
- 37:13plays that free safety spot with Lutmar at cash.
- 37:16That's that's what I expected. And then we got to the open
- 37:18spring game and and they're there.
- 37:20It is. They're they're playing
- 37:21different positions, center and right guard Kate Peeper.
- 37:25Where is he going to be playing? He's arguably your best
- 37:27offensive lineman to me. I still give that to Trevor Lau,
- 37:30but is he going to be playing center?
- 37:33Is he going to be playing right guard before Miss Linsky was
- 37:35sidelined? This is one thing I pointed out
- 37:37in the the all Access is that before Miss Linsky was sidelined
- 37:41in the spring, he was playing center with with peeper at right
- 37:44guard, at least in in one of the the clips that we saw.
- 37:47So those those would be the main things that stick out to me.
- 37:50How well does Tony Diaz play when when we get to see him?
- 37:54That'll be really interesting. And then of course, quarterback.
- 37:57But to me, I mean, you look at like like strong safety.
- 38:01I think Tyler Brown has that locked up.
- 38:03The Sean Lee is cornerback one who plays cornerback 2 between
- 38:06Jalen Ross Watson and Rashad Godfrey.
- 38:09Does Jacob Wallace if if Lutmer subsumes the cash position is
- 38:13Wallace competing for for time and corner?
- 38:15Like is he one of those guys? So a lot of things to follow yet
- 38:19that isn't just quarterback. This team is going to have a lot
- 38:22of new faces on the field after losing a ton of guys that that
- 38:25were staples in the lineup between like a Carson Shire,
- 38:29Logan Jones, Jenny Dunker, both Steven.
- 38:31I mean, you just go down the line, you lose Cohen, Enteringer
- 38:33and Zager, Wampa, TJ Hall. Like it's going to be a lot of
- 38:37new faces that are that are going to be seen.
- 38:40Defensive tackle, I think is going to be the biggest question
- 38:42coming into the year. If there was ever a year and a
- 38:46time that you wish the spring portal was back, certainly be
- 38:48that one. Because we didn't get a glimpse
- 38:50of a lot of the new guys either the the transfers that they
- 38:53brought in. And, and maybe that's a part of
- 38:54it. But Rice, Hawthorne, he's got to
- 38:56take a leap and he's got to become a stud because I don't
- 38:59know how much help he's going to get inside.
- 39:02Yeah, yeah, he will. I think he said something about
- 39:05an MCL that kept him out for the spring.
- 39:07That's obviously not ideal, but he is your top DT and I I think
- 39:12it's Bryce Hawthorne, big gap and then everybody else.
- 39:15But it sounds like it could be Devin Kennedy that that subsumes
- 39:20that that second DT role. He's a guy that's long, has some
- 39:23NFL pedigree, obviously with his dad Jimmy.
- 39:25I think it's Jimmy being a first round NFL pick from from Penn
- 39:30State back in the day, a guy with with some of that pedigree
- 39:33to him. Brad Pitt's given a kid from the
- 39:36Chicago area Catholic League. That league is always loaded
- 39:40that a Marist super violent. He's a guy that doesn't
- 39:43necessarily rack up a ton of attack or a ton of stats, but I
- 39:47like to call it the effing the play up that he's pretty good at
- 39:51that. And then you go down to some of
- 39:53the transfers like a Bryce Stevenson and Emmanuel Ola Baju.
- 39:57Ola Baju had a source describe him to me as as like the Hulk.
- 40:02He's a big boy. So and high school teammates
- 40:05with Bryce Hawthorne. So maybe they have some of that
- 40:07chemistry from from back in the day.
- 40:09Maybe they end up playing together a little bit.
- 40:11So yeah, I that's one I should have mentioned defensive line,
- 40:14defensive and the whole defensive line really.
- 40:16I mean, you bring back Hawthorne and Kenneth Merriweather who
- 40:19weren't starters. But they'll be they'll keep the
- 40:22key on the defensive line this year is Yosefa Nezza.
- 40:25Does he end up being a starter? I mean, I was thinking about
- 40:30this this morning. I don't think people realize how
- 40:34big of a loss Brian Allen is now with the portal.
- 40:37I mean, dude was a physical freak, really explosive.
- 40:41We got to see that in bits and pieces.
- 40:43But I think he wanted to go somewhere where he could really
- 40:45tee off on the quarterback. And that's just not what what
- 40:48Iowa does with their two gap system.
- 40:50So, yeah, big loss, especially a guy that that knew what was
- 40:54happening, knew what was going on.
- 40:55And I mean, no, no shade to to the transfers, but that that's
- 40:59tough to replace the guy who's been in the program for so long.
- 41:03Kamari Brown will be 1 to watch that that fills in that
- 41:05defensive end spot. Super violent guy out of Elon
- 41:08too. So violent, quick, tough.
- 41:11So he'll be, he'll be one to keep an eye on as well, yeah.
- 41:14Hopefully Alec Baju can, he looks like Hulk and hopefully he
- 41:17doesn't play like Bruce Banner on that front.
- 41:20Out of time for today, Elliott. Always good catching up with
- 41:22you. We'll talk to you again soon
- 41:23down the road, All right? Sounds good.
- 41:26Thanks guys. Hawkeyeinsider.com.
- 41:27Elliott Clough joining us here on Miller and Condon on the Iowa
- 41:30Sports Radio Network. Quick timeout back on the other
- 41:32side, Put a cap on our number one.
- 41:35Stay right there. It's Miller and Condon on the
- 41:37Iowa Sports Radio Network. Put a cap on our #1 Miller in
- 41:46Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network, Trent Condon here, Nick
- 41:49Marvitz across from me as we get into a little bit of everything.
- 41:54Some breaking news here just a little bit ago, Joel.
- 41:56Joel Embiid will be out for the Sixers tonight.
- 42:00And we talked about Anthony Edwards, him being questionable.
- 42:03So injuries as always that we go through this whole year, the
- 42:07tanking situation in the NBA, Nick, everything that's gone
- 42:09along with that. And, and the frustration, if
- 42:11you're, even though a casual NBA watcher, how difficult the
- 42:14regular season is and all these guys sitting out all the time,
- 42:18it just continues in the playoffs.
- 42:20What is it about the sport? What is it about the NBA?
- 42:22Is it is it the sheer volume of games?
- 42:24Is it the 82? Is it the strain of the body
- 42:26that they're putting on there? Because year after year after
- 42:29year, it's not just a regular season thing.
- 42:32Injuries impact the playoffs seemingly every single year.
- 42:34Yeah, maybe it's the hardwood. I, I, I mean, I don't know.
- 42:38Is it because, like, do they need to resort to playing on
- 42:40glass like Iowa State did? I cannot believe how many games
- 42:45they miss. And I'm not saying that they're
- 42:46not getting hurt. It's just that it feels
- 42:49different. Maybe there's always the
- 42:51argument to like from my exercise science background that
- 42:55humans are developing such a way to get strong at a rate where
- 42:59their ligaments can't actually keep up.
- 43:01And so that's like, you know, back in the 80s and the 90s, we
- 43:04just didn't know how to get that strong and fast.
- 43:06And it just wasn't really something that the body had to
- 43:09handle. Now all of those ligaments
- 43:11you're, you're coming in at let's say 18 miles an hour,
- 43:14cutting hard and looking the other way.
- 43:16All of those knee ligaments have to like the energy has to go
- 43:18somewhere. Those those aren't strung up.
- 43:20I'm not saying that's the reason, but I it's puzzling.
- 43:23It really is. No Embid, likely no Anthony
- 43:26Edwards tonight. Well, that's my own, I guess
- 43:29usage there. The word likely.
- 43:30We'll see on that front. He is listed as questionable,
- 43:33but they got game one and that goes a long, long ways on that
- 43:36one. A quick question here before we
- 43:38run out of time. This is normally noon to two.
- 43:41This is old guy radio. It's 2 old guys.
- 43:43You're not an old guy. How do you consume sports?
- 43:46Because Ken and I were both DIRECTV guys and then we
- 43:48complained about having to use the input button and jumping
- 43:50over and going over to Peacock as I mentioned with the the
- 43:53tables gave the other night. Are you a streamer?
- 43:57How do you consume your sports? I'm a YouTube TV guy when it's
- 44:00possible because they've got like the quad box, you know, and
- 44:03so that's really nice where I don't necessarily have to jump
- 44:06between games. And the really cool thing with
- 44:07that is I can have four games up, one that I'm focused on,
- 44:11click on the one I want to watch big screen when it goes to
- 44:13commercial back out, keep tabs on the other one.
- 44:16That's my preferred way, which is why yesterday when you
- 44:18brought up like, oh, Peacock, it's exclusive on there.
- 44:21I'm like, great, now I got a back out of my YouTube TV.
- 44:23Go into there, check on it or watch it on my phone.
- 44:26It's just it adds a whole another level of as the first
- 44:30world problem, but I don't love it.
- 44:31So yeah, YouTube TV so far has been my favorite.
- 44:34Yes, and DIRECTV, I said for years, I'm gonna change, I'm
- 44:39gonna change, and then you get another deal and I'll, Right,
- 44:40we'll stick around for another six months, another year and
- 44:43those kind of things. But of all these streamers, boy,
- 44:46people talk about YouTube TV and obviously the DIRECTV or the
- 44:49connection now to Sunday Ticket. Yeah, might be time for a switch
- 44:52after decades of DIRECTV. Wow, that would be big for you.
- 44:56Absolutely. Big change coming up next.
- 44:59We got David Kaplan stopping by. We'll talk Chicago sports with
- 45:01him. A look at the Bears, the Cubs,
- 45:04the White Sox, the Bulls all coming up next.
- 45:06Miller and kind of continue news on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 45:08Network.
