- 0:00What's up everybody? Charlie Marlow here jumping on,
- 0:02going to continue to answer your Cardinals questions.
- 0:05Last week, Brendan Schaefer and I answered a bunch of them, but
- 0:08there's a ton. So I figured I'll answer some
- 0:11more and then later this week, Brendan and I will get on again
- 0:14and hopefully answer all the questions.
- 0:17Also, I'm testing out this new microphone here, so hopefully it
- 0:20sounds good, but let's get right to it.
- 0:21All right. Hope everybody had a great
- 0:23weekend. I'm just going to pick up where
- 0:26we left off last week. OK, I'm going bottom to top.
- 0:31This is from Pablo Hermes. He says 4 new statues should be
- 0:36created soon. Albert, Roland, Yati and Wayno.
- 0:40What pose would you use for each?
- 0:43Where do you place them? First of all, I think you're
- 0:46going to have these statues kind of where all the other the
- 0:51smaller statues are. I guess that would be what?
- 0:54That's third baseline, up near up near the left field, corner
- 0:59of Busch Stadium. So, OK, let's look at the
- 1:03different poses. First of all, I think now maybe
- 1:06you don't agree with me. I think Yachty and Wayno's
- 1:09should be together. I think that should be the hug
- 1:13after the final out of the 2006 World Series.
- 1:16That would be cool. Remember, also correct me if I'm
- 1:19wrong. Don't you only get a statue if
- 1:21you're in the Baseball Hall of Fame?
- 1:23That's where we all love Wayno, but he's probably not going to
- 1:26be a baseball Hall of Famer. Does he get a statue?
- 1:28He probably deserves 1, so maybe you have the statue he and yati
- 1:33hugging. I like that.
- 1:34This is just right off the top of my head.
- 1:36I haven't put too much thought into this.
- 1:38Roland is just such a kind of old school, just a hard hat
- 1:43baseball player. I always thought of Roland when
- 1:46he hits the bomb, he hits the home run.
- 1:48He puts his head down and just runs.
- 1:50Now, I don't know if you can make a compelling statue of a
- 1:53person running with his head down, but that's what I think of
- 1:57when I think of Scott Rowland. I think Albert is the tough one.
- 2:02Albert, so many big moments, so many home runs.
- 2:05Obviously the Brad Lidge 700 homers, but I feel like Albert
- 2:11has to be hitting. He has to have a bat in his
- 2:14hand, maybe kind of that Albert pose with the bat where he's
- 2:18finished his swing. He's about ready to kind of
- 2:21throw it a little bit. Not a bat flip that.
- 2:23That's the first thing that comes to mind for me.
- 2:25What do you guys think? I think that's a good, fun
- 2:27question to start it off. All right, Putty chains.
- 2:31Does the extreme love that Randy Flores gets from Cardinals fans?
- 2:35Does that make sense? He has been drafting for eight
- 2:37years and is responsible for the foundation of a team that was
- 2:40sixth worst in MLB. He seems to have gotten a lot of
- 2:44mileage out of a few good draft picks.
- 2:46I think overall Randy Flores has been very good with the draft.
- 2:51You also in this conversation we do have to discuss the fact that
- 2:55for years the Cardinals drafted and developed so much of their
- 2:58own pitching. We haven't seen that near to the
- 3:01levels they know that in recent years.
- 3:05Randy Flores it seems doesn't seem.
- 3:07I mean it shows has shifted to some of the high end position
- 3:10players, especially the high school guys and if you look at
- 3:13some of them already bearing a lot of fruit, you can go back to
- 3:17Nolan Gorman, Jordan Walker, Mason, win a high school guy.
- 3:22You look at that one draft the COVID draft where you have look
- 3:25only what 5 rounds you get, Jordan, Walker, Mason win Tink.
- 3:30Hence those are all high school guys.
- 3:32Hopefully Tink hence works out. I think it's a fair question
- 3:36though. They have.
- 3:37They have a lot of high end position players they need to
- 3:40get back to, to basically stockpiling pitching year after
- 3:44year, to have guys at the upper levels who can come in, help in
- 3:48the bullpen, give you a start. That's what the Cardinals have
- 3:51been lacking the last several years, in my opinion.
- 3:54That's what they had back in the day when they're making those
- 3:57runs 11 to 15. And it wasn't just drafted guys
- 4:01but just think of Carlos Martinez.
- 4:03Think of I mean relievers, Kevin Seegerist, Trevor Rosenthal,
- 4:09even a Seth Manis. But Lance Lynn, Michael Walker,
- 4:13Shelby Miller just churning out pitching seemingly year after
- 4:18year Cardinals need to get back to that.
- 4:20Also from what I've seen the the Cardinals current minor league
- 4:24system isn't in fantastic shape. So that's a that's a fair
- 4:27question. Also the future of Randy Flores.
- 4:29I think for a while we thought could he be the guy who who is
- 4:33the succession plan to John Mozalak.
- 4:36You got Michael Gershar there and now of course you have heim
- 4:38Bloom as well waiting in the wings.
- 4:40OK, Gray Bush 314 says. Had we signed Lance Lynn after
- 4:46the 22 season, wouldn't we all be ecstatic knee surgery and
- 4:49spring training that year and struggled his first handful of
- 4:52start. His last twelve starts had a
- 4:542.45 ERA. 23 was an anomaly for Lynn.
- 4:58If Lynn pitches closer to career norm, a rotation will be a plus.
- 5:02Yeah, overall I agree. If you look at Lance Lynn's
- 5:05career ERAI think it's is it pushing for.
- 5:10I'll look this up right now. I think it's like 3.8 something.
- 5:13Last year was obviously really bad for Lance Lynn.
- 5:17Let's check it out because my memory is not as good as it once
- 5:21was. Lance Lynn?
- 5:22Yeah. Career ERA 3.74.
- 5:26So last year 5.73. The year before, 20223.99,
- 5:31really good, 20212.69, Yeah, I don't think Lance Lynn is going
- 5:35to be nearly as bad as he was last year pushing a 6 ERA if he
- 5:39can get anywhere close to four. So the 3.99 he was in 2022, the
- 5:453.74 that he is for his career. I do think Cardinals fans will
- 5:49be ecstatic about that now as he gets older.
- 5:53Look, is it more and I'm just focusing on ERA here.
- 5:56You know, if it's a 4243, even up to 4-5, I don't think we can
- 6:00complain that much. But if he throws 180 innings, if
- 6:03he's striking out about a batter per nine innings, so obviously 9
- 6:10per nine innings. So I'm talking about a strikeout
- 6:12per innings pitched. If he's close to that, I think
- 6:15that's a pretty Dang good signing for a one year deal for
- 6:17the money involved. All right, Illini Frank, talent
- 6:22evaluation. No one is 100%, but the MO
- 6:24administration has made some significant misses in assessing
- 6:28their talent, 100%, and we've talked about this a million
- 6:32times. Obviously, with the outfielders
- 6:35trading away Randy Rosarena, we bring up Adolis Garcia.
- 6:41You have somebody like Elaine Thomas, not so much, that's the
- 6:44Jon Lester deal and and look, you, you can nitpick all of
- 6:50those, but to me it's more about a bunch of a bunch of misses.
- 6:54We'll see what happens with Tyler O'Neill.
- 6:56That one was a little different because I feel like that
- 6:58relationship got to the point where it was irreparable with
- 7:02the Cardinals. But just big picture, the fact
- 7:05that a lot of these outfielders have left and been really good.
- 7:09Now some other teams passed on them as well, but it's more
- 7:12about the Cardinals either not giving these guys the correct
- 7:15opportunities or picking other guys over them.
- 7:19Like if you go back in the day when they when they essentially
- 7:22didn't give Randy Rosarena a chance.
- 7:24Adolis Garcia, a little bit of a different discussion.
- 7:29He was a late bloomer and a lot of these guys are.
- 7:32But at the time the Cardinals were going with Tyler O'Neill
- 7:35and Harrison Bader. You understand why they made
- 7:38those choices. But they were, especially for
- 7:41Rosarina, the wrong, the wrong choices there.
- 7:43Even somebody like Dylan Carlson where it now seems like they've
- 7:47they've held on to him too long, it appears where he doesn't have
- 7:50the trade value he would have had three years ago.
- 7:53Remember a couple years ago. We're kind of joking and and
- 7:55nobody knows if this was really true.
- 7:57But if the Cardinals were ever really in serious on Juan Soto
- 8:02and if if Dylan Carlson was the guy the Cardinals wouldn't part
- 8:06with, we'll look now a year and a half or so later.
- 8:09Dylan Carlson is the 4th outfielder and if he has a bad
- 8:12season he's going to have zero trade value for the Cardinals
- 8:15and then so pitching wise Illini Frank was asking about talent
- 8:19evaluation. This also it all goes back to
- 8:21the other trade that we talk about time and time again.
- 8:24It's Randy Rosarina that trade. But the other one is Marcelo
- 8:27Zuna, where look, you did draft or and or develop couple really
- 8:32good pitchers. Sandy Alcantra, Zach Galen.
- 8:35But then you traded them away and those guys blossomed and
- 8:40bloomed in other organizations. So yes, you got drafting and
- 8:44developing, but also you have to know who's in house.
- 8:47You have to know your guys better than anybody.
- 8:49John Mozalak said that right after Randy Rosarena first went
- 8:52crazy in that postseason a couple years ago.
- 8:54That's the first thing he said in his press conference.
- 8:57We need to know our guys in house better than anybody else,
- 9:01OK? Liam says.
- 9:03I don't see how this roster is any better than last year's.
- 9:06This is an interesting question or comment.
- 9:09I'm going to do a whole video on this coming up this week because
- 9:13I got another, another comment that I thought was really
- 9:17interesting. So first of all, position
- 9:19players essentially the same. I think we can agree on that for
- 9:22the most part. It's all about the pitching,
- 9:25pitching, pitching, pitching, as we know.
- 9:27Now this other comment, and I'll grab it for you this week, but
- 9:29essentially, as I've been saying, I think the Cardinals
- 9:32have improved. This person basically said,
- 9:36well, how have they improved if if in the bullpen you're saying,
- 9:40OK, they they add Andrew Kittredge and Keenan Middleton,
- 9:44but they're also replacing Jordan Hicks and Chris Stratton
- 9:48and start to look at the numbers, is that really that
- 9:51much of an upgrade and then go also to starting rotation?
- 9:55And again, I'll really get into this later this week, but I
- 9:57think it's an interesting point. Look at the the pitching they've
- 10:00added. Let's just let's just kind of
- 10:02replace on paper. OK.
- 10:03So we have Lance Lynn, we have Kyle Gibson, we have Sonny Gray.
- 10:07And they're essentially replacing from last year, Jordan
- 10:11Montgomery, Jack Flaherty and Adam Wainwright.
- 10:14So just kind of superficially, let's think about this.
- 10:17Jordan Montgomery was a freaking stud.
- 10:20OK, so now Sonny Grey was better last year, but I think it's fair
- 10:25to say Sonny Grey, Jordan Montgomery pretty, pretty close.
- 10:30Top end guys, ones, twos, whatever you want to call them.
- 10:34And then I think it's also fair to say, look at Jack Flaherty's
- 10:37numbers with the Cardinals. I know he fell off with the
- 10:39Orioles, but Jack Flaherty's numbers with the Cardinals, Were
- 10:43they that much different than Kyle Gibson's numbers with the
- 10:46Orioles? Except for the win loss record.
- 10:48Kyle Gibson had a really good win loss record, but I think
- 10:51it's fair to say that's kind of similar.
- 10:54And this also now innings are going to be important here.
- 10:56Innings are going to be important.
- 10:57We can't just focus on ERA, but that's also where I hate to
- 11:01always harp on this. Adam Wainwright was just so
- 11:06awful last year. Now he's pushing what, 7 1/2 ERA
- 11:08lanceland was pushing a 6 ERA last year.
- 11:13Let's be real about this. Adam Wainwright isn't in the
- 11:15rotation towards the middle till the end of last year if the
- 11:19Cardinals aren't out of the race and if he's not going for 200
- 11:23wins. So it's pretty easy to upgrade
- 11:26from what what Adam Wainwright gave you last year, Lance Lynn,
- 11:30if he can push that 4.5 ERA, whatever it is, that's a
- 11:33significant, significant upgrade from Adam Wainwright, 7 1/2 ERA,
- 11:39whatever it was. Especially he's giving you 3-4
- 11:41inning starts and some of those. But I think when you kind of
- 11:45look at it more so on paper and you say, OK, Monty and Sonny
- 11:49Gray kind of the same Flaherty and Cal Gibson, kind of the same
- 11:54huge upgrade you would think from Lynn, from Wayno to Lynn.
- 11:59But I think it's an interesting question.
- 12:00So I understand why somebody like Liam says I don't see this
- 12:05roster is any better than last year's.
- 12:07I think that's a fairpoint, even though I disagree.
- 12:09I'm trying to also move around, so I'm covering up this light
- 12:11behind me. OK, Vance Lloyd.
- 12:14Hot take team starts off on fire.
- 12:17NATO, Goldie and Gorman lead the league in bombs after the first
- 12:2240 games. So NATO, Goldie, and Gorman all
- 12:27are up there leading the league in bombs after the first 40
- 12:30games. I would love if that happened.
- 12:33Doubt it. Remember Cardinals?
- 12:36You know early in the season bad weather guys usually get going
- 12:40as it gets warmer into the summer. 1st 40 games, you're
- 12:44talking April, May, you can see these guys starting to surge.
- 12:47Probably May, June, you know, or June, July, August.
- 12:50But I love the the positivity. I think.
- 12:53I think NATO and Goldie both have much better years than last
- 12:57year. Gorman, it's all about health.
- 12:59We know that with Gorman, if Gorman can stay healthy and play
- 13:02100 and 45150 games, I mean he's going to hit over 30 homers for
- 13:06sure. Could he get to a 40?
- 13:08But he's got to stay healthy. The back is clearly an issue.
- 13:11OK, Dewallett, Inspector, Cheddar, Thon and Joyer. 83 win
- 13:16projection seems about right. They'll be 12 and 14 in a 26 man
- 13:21payroll ranking. Also to be expected is a 2021
- 13:25type year. Assume they spread the wins out
- 13:27in a more normal distribution. No insane winning streak.
- 13:31A success or not good enough. 83 wins is not good enough, in my
- 13:34opinion at all. I think also we need to look at
- 13:39these rosters differently because the roster will look
- 13:43different after the trade deadline if they're in it.
- 13:45So let's just say the Cardinals are projected at 83 wins, which
- 13:49I think is fair. Whatever you want to throw out
- 13:52there, 8384858687. I I don't even know if I'm ready
- 13:56to give my win total yet. Not that it matters, but I
- 14:00haven't really thought about it. You have to kind of look at the
- 14:03schedule and all that, see what other teams in the NL Central
- 14:06are doing. But let's say that 83 win
- 14:08projection is accurate. OK, so you're you're basically
- 14:12one game above 500. OK.
- 14:15If that's the case, if the Cardinals are right at 500 or
- 14:18one game above at the trade deadline, about a hundred, 110
- 14:23games in whatever it is, let's say they're 56 and 55 or
- 14:27something like that. Well, the Cardinals, after
- 14:29missing the play offs last year, should absolutely add, which I
- 14:33think they will. You'll probably need to add a
- 14:35starter, you'll probably need to add a reliever, and all of a
- 14:37sudden maybe that 83 win projection now becomes 878889
- 14:44whatever the win total is, to get a playoff spot.
- 14:47So I think that's the way that we can look at this.
- 14:50Let's see, Mitchell Sharp says. Do you guys think the Dewitts
- 14:53are thinking about selling the team in the next five years?
- 14:56I don't at all. Why would you, Why would you
- 14:59sell the team, especially with with Bill DeWitt the third, a
- 15:03young guy, if he is the chairman down the road?
- 15:06I would think you keep that in the family.
- 15:08I know there are tax implications for all that.
- 15:11We saw that with the Rams. Remember when when Lucia passed
- 15:16and you had what? No, no, no, no, sorry.
- 15:20When Georgia. When Georgia passed, Lucia
- 15:23didn't pass. I haven't.
- 15:24I haven't checked that, but I don't think she did.
- 15:27But Chip and Lucia then taken over.
- 15:29You had all those tax implications and then that's
- 15:32when they sold it off. At first you thought it was
- 15:35going to be to Shah Khan and then of course Stan Cronke jumps
- 15:38in there. So I don't know all the tax
- 15:40ramifications. I would think the de Witts want
- 15:42to keep it in the family. A lot of people are asking me
- 15:45about that. Remember, Remember back when
- 15:47when Mike Shannon said that on air towards the end of his
- 15:50career and like everybody talking a little bit?
- 15:54OK, Will, this is Will Nix, who gets the bulk of save
- 15:59opportunities? Will Marmol have a dedicated
- 16:01closer or will he use relievers in highest leverage positions?
- 16:05Will Blake continue to coach by spreadsheet or will eyeballs
- 16:10have any input? I think the first question is
- 16:13easy. Who will get the bulk of the
- 16:14save opportunities? It's Ryan Helsley.
- 16:17Easy. If he's healthy, you got to
- 16:20think if he's healthy he's getting 30 plus saves.
- 16:21I do think Marmol is new school when it comes to mixing and
- 16:26matching. So you got to think Helsley gets
- 16:29gets the most. But then you have guys like you
- 16:33have KITT Ridge, you know, Could you see KITT Ridge with five
- 16:37saves, whatever it is, you have Keenan Middleton.
- 16:40I looked this up last week. I believe he has fifteen career
- 16:42saves. Gio can go in there.
- 16:45I know you don't love Gio as your closer, but every once in a
- 16:48while in a match up situation maybe, maybe Ryan Helsley's down
- 16:52in terms of not being able to be used that particular night.
- 16:56And then also you have the the match up situation, yeah, match
- 17:00up. Maybe you have a situation where
- 17:01you want a lefty in the 9th and somebody like a JoJo Romero,
- 17:05Zach Thompson, who knows his role.
- 17:08What about Matthew Libetour? So again, I think, I think that
- 17:12Helsley Helsley gets 30 plus saves if he's healthy.
- 17:16Everybody else falls in line with, you know, a couple 12345
- 17:20for all those other guys, right? That'd be fine.
- 17:23OK, Ryan says Charlie and Chafe. Sorry, Chafe's not on this one.
- 17:28But we love B Chafe. Do you guys feel the front
- 17:31office and ownership truly believe last year was a fluke?
- 17:34I just hate to see them appear so cavalier that it won't happen
- 17:37again. Almost like they couldn't
- 17:39possibly see a scenario where the Cardinals have another
- 17:42losing season. I think they can definitely see
- 17:45that scenario happening. But I do think, big picture,
- 17:50they believe last year was a fluke in the sense that
- 17:54everything that could go wrong went wrong and they were banking
- 17:59on a lot of ifs in starting pitching.
- 18:02Remember John Mozalak even said that as a lot of median fans
- 18:05were questioning last offseason. Hey, you don't have enough
- 18:08pitching. And he said, look, maybe, maybe,
- 18:11maybe six months from now we'll look back and say I made a
- 18:13mistake. Well, John Mosalak and the
- 18:15Cardinals did make a mistake there.
- 18:16So that's where the certainty with the innings, even if you
- 18:21don't love Lancelin and Kyle Gibson, they at least have, you
- 18:25would think as much certainty as you can get with innings with
- 18:28Lancelin, Kyle Gibson and Sonny Gray.
- 18:32But look, after you have a bad season like that now, is it more
- 18:36in your brain that this can happen again?
- 18:38Yes, but I do think, big picture the Cardinals, I I believe it
- 18:42was a bit of a fluke. I do think that they neglected
- 18:46the pitching, which everybody brought up, but I do think they
- 18:49thought they had enough to get to the trade deadline like in
- 18:52previous years when they added Hap, Lester, Quintana and
- 18:58Montgomery and all that. I I think that was the strategy
- 19:01and it just didn't, it didn't work.
- 19:02It blew up in their face. OK, great value speaker.
- 19:06If Yadi ever becomes manager, how many seasons could he go
- 19:09without a playoff series win before the fan base turns on
- 19:13him? This is a really interesting
- 19:15question. What do you guys think about
- 19:16that Now? Will the fan base ever really
- 19:19turn on Yadi? They'll always love him.
- 19:22But man, if you start mugging games, as Tony Larusso used to
- 19:25say, mugging games, if you have losing seasons, look, there's
- 19:30going to be a lot of complaints. Doesn't matter.
- 19:31It doesn't matter who it is. Yadi's beloved, but that's a
- 19:34great question. Let's say hypothetical.
- 19:37Let's say Yadi takes over after this season.
- 19:42Let's say let's say Ali does win 83 games, but they don't renew
- 19:46his contract. Yadi takes over.
- 19:49So at this point though, also part of this conversation would
- 19:52be that the Cardinals wouldn't have made the playoffs in the
- 19:55previous two years. To me, that's the only the only
- 19:57way Yadi takes over in 2025, if this even happens.
- 20:02Is if the Cardinals don't make the playoffs in 2024, coming up
- 20:05this year. So that's also part of this
- 20:08hypothetical. If Yadi takes over.
- 20:11OK, you'd think a manager gets a clean slate, but Cardinals fans
- 20:15would be pissed because they wouldn't have been to the
- 20:17playoffs in 2324. So if Yadi would take over a
- 20:22team that had been to the playoffs five straight years or
- 20:25whatever, it was like like let's say Matheny.
- 20:28Matheny takes over the Larussa teams and they're really good.
- 20:32Don't win a World Series, but they get to the NLCS World
- 20:34Series. NLCS hundred wins.
- 20:37So he builds up some equity before he has the, what, 2 1/2
- 20:41bad seasons before he's fired. And look, Matheny probably
- 20:46wouldn't have got those 2 1/2 seasons if he didn't have the
- 20:48NLCSS and the World Series appearance before that.
- 20:51So that's a great question. I think after one year, after
- 20:56one season of Yachty being the manager if the Cardinals OK.
- 21:01So the question though was without a play off series win.
- 21:05So I guess they could still get to the play offs.
- 21:08If Yadi got to the play offs in the first year they didn't win a
- 21:10series, people aren't obviously calling for his head but I think
- 21:15let's say yeah and also see if they get to the play offs.
- 21:19It's kind of a different story, but I think if Yadi were to not
- 21:22win a play off series in two seasons, but then it's hard to
- 21:28say because if he gets to the playoffs both years, I don't
- 21:30know. I think the better question is
- 21:31if they don't make the playoffs. I think if if if Yachti made the
- 21:36playoffs one of his first two years, people aren't going nuts.
- 21:40But in year three, if the Cardinals haven't made the
- 21:44playoffs, people are nuts because again, that would be
- 21:46five straight years of no playoffs.
- 21:50But if he made the playoffs one of the years or both but don't
- 21:54win a series people aren't going crazy.
- 21:56Look the expectations have been brought back down.
- 21:59We wanted the Cardinals. This is unfortunate but we
- 22:02wanted the Cardinals to get past the hey, 88 wins, maybe win the
- 22:05Central. Maybe get a wild card first
- 22:07round playoff exit. We wanted more than that last
- 22:10off season but the Cardinals were so bad in 2023.
- 22:14It seems like we've lowered the expectations back to hey let's
- 22:17just make the playoffs. I think that would be looked
- 22:20upon by a lot of fans and media, unfortunately, as a success in
- 22:26in 2024. OK, Thomas Gawain, I already
- 22:30asked that question. My bad.
- 22:31Who will replace Tyler O'Neil? It's the strongest cardinal now.
- 22:34I think I said Miles Michaels. I did that one last week.
- 22:38Hanky. Did we get Lance Lynn because we
- 22:40needed pitching or because we need to keep the cat happy?
- 22:43Can Descalzo pinch hit this year?
- 22:45His Contreras are starting shortstop so just a joke, a joke
- 22:49question, which is fine, but I'll move on.
- 22:52We do love the fact that Lance Lynn is with the team though,
- 22:55not just for pitching, but he does.
- 22:56He does bring some fun to the post games.
- 22:58Hey you need that and the pregames you need that during
- 23:00162 but you also need to win. It's easier to have fun when
- 23:04your team's winning. Rob Sheik I would like to hear
- 23:08some conversation around Trevor Bauer and why he would be a good
- 23:11fit for a one year deal to re establish himself and the MLB
- 23:15cards are again trying to convince us that this rotation
- 23:17is good. I am not convinced I get that.
- 23:20It seems like, look, I said this last year, even Trevor Bauer, he
- 23:25he paid his penalty. You know there is a process.
- 23:28I'm not saying I love the dude. I don't know everything that
- 23:30happened. Also with with different women.
- 23:34We know about the one woman where it looked like, you know,
- 23:36through her text that she was trying to get money from Trevor
- 23:39Bauer. There's other women who have
- 23:40accused him. I don't know the situation,
- 23:44these things with sexual assault.
- 23:46I wasn't there. I I don't like to pretend like I
- 23:48have a real hot take on this. It does seem like that he paid
- 23:53his penalty through MLB. He sat out, what, close to two
- 23:58years he pitched last year in Japan.
- 24:02I don't know the fact that he doesn't have a deal now, though.
- 24:05Is he essentially being blackballed from Major League
- 24:07Baseball? It kind of looks like that.
- 24:09But again, I also don't know what else Major League Baseball
- 24:12knows in their investigation. I'm not going to pretend to know
- 24:15what they know now. If more information comes out,
- 24:18I'll give you a better take on that.
- 24:20Graham STL If you got to add 1 player to the roster via free
- 24:25agent signing, who would it be? Take into account the predicted
- 24:29contract length and value. I'm thinking Jordan Montgomery
- 24:32or Phil? Is it Mayton?
- 24:33The reliever? Monty will have more value in
- 24:36innings provided but lengthier and more expensive commitment.
- 24:40Yeah, got It'd be nice to have one more front end of the
- 24:44rotation. Starting pitcher like Jordan
- 24:47Montgomery, Somebody like Phil Mayton Matan, I don't even know
- 24:51how it's pronounced, but somebody like that you can pick
- 24:53up at the trade deadline a reliever like that.
- 24:56So that's not a that's not a huge ask.
- 24:58I mean having another guy would be great, but what the Cardinals
- 25:01really need on paper is the front end of the rotation guy,
- 25:05Somebody like Jordan Montgomery, but also if he gets a seven-year
- 25:08deal, I'm not necessarily saying that's going to be a fantastic
- 25:11deal. So I understand why the
- 25:14Cardinals with a Snell or Montgomery, but I want to answer
- 25:19the question, if you got to add 1 player to the roster via free
- 25:22agent signing, who would it be? Can I go if I go back in time I
- 25:27understand that Yamamoto basically got to be out of the
- 25:31Cardinals pay range but he was the guy that made sense to me
- 25:36because he's young. I I I agree giving A7 year deal
- 25:41to an Aaron Nola Jordan Montgomery Blake Snell.
- 25:44If they get those type of deals and you're paying them from ages
- 25:46like 312345678, whatever it is. That's why I like Yamamoto.
- 25:52The prospects of Yamamoto, even though his deal became crazy
- 25:56high, is you don't see really, really talented starting
- 26:00pitchers like that going to the market at age 25 or whatever he
- 26:03was. So I'll bank on the guy that's
- 26:0525. So my answer to that is
- 26:07Yamamoto, because look, there's just a lot less risk.
- 26:11There's always going to be risk with a huge deal.
- 26:13What did he get? Did he get 12 years and 300 plus
- 26:16what? Whatever the deal was, I can't
- 26:17even remember with the posting fee, but you're getting him from
- 26:21age. I mean, we're talking super
- 26:23prime 2567893123, whereas with these guys like Montgomery,
- 26:30Nola, Blake Snell, you are getting the back half of their
- 26:34careers where it could, it could get ugly.
- 26:37Let's see, we have Graham non Cardinals related with this one.
- 26:42Well Charlie acknowledged there is a difference for Hall of Fame
- 26:44voters when it comes to steroid era PED usage and then Manny A
- 26:49Rod using after the rules were in place and their subsequent
- 26:52suspensions affecting their Hall of Fame case.
- 26:55I understand that people look at it like that.
- 26:57I just personally don't. I understand and acknowledge the
- 27:00difference. To me, if you use you knew
- 27:03before you weren't supposed to do it and and you knew after the
- 27:06fact. I understand you had different
- 27:08rules, but those guys knew beforehand they weren't supposed
- 27:11to be using performance enhancing drugs.
- 27:14So I throw them all in the same bucket personally, if you want
- 27:18to look at them differently. I get it.
- 27:19I wouldn't if I was a voter. That's my thing, Graham.
- 27:22I understand that some other voters look at it differently.
- 27:25That's how I would look at it. If you used performance
- 27:28enhancing drugs and your numbers basically reflect that, whether
- 27:31it was before or after you benefited from them, I'm going
- 27:34to look at you all the same. OK, Aaron Mullins, here's more
- 27:37of a bold prediction. The only starter with an ERA
- 27:40over 4 this year will be Gibson who hovers at like 4.2 and the
- 27:44rest of the rotation is surprisingly decent.
- 27:46I can see a world where Mats has a strong bounce back gear.
- 27:50I can't remember if we already answered that one.
- 27:52I tried to go in order, but hey, I can see that I can see that.
- 27:57So again, let's say Sunny Gray is around 3313233.
- 28:03Whatever it is. Again, are they going to be over
- 28:074? I don't really care.
- 28:09Like it'd be great to say they're under 4, but is there
- 28:12really that big of a difference between 3.9 ERA and 4.1 or 4.2?
- 28:17Just just be healthy. Give them innings and and hover
- 28:23around somewhere 4/4 and 1/2. If Kyle Gibson and Lancelin do
- 28:27that, we should all be happy about that.
- 28:30That's basically what you can expect from those guys.
- 28:33If they're anything better, it's great.
- 28:34Sonny Gray is the guy that needs to be a front end of the
- 28:37rotation starter Steven Matz, who knows.
- 28:41He just has to stay healthy too. OK, let's see, Where do you
- 28:46expect, barring any addition, any additional changes to the
- 28:49roster, the Cardinals to be at the end of the season, win wise,
- 28:54I still think they're going to get back.
- 28:55If you had to ask me right now, which you are, I still think
- 28:58they get back to like that 88 wins, but they do it in the
- 29:01fashion I said earlier, which is your 500 ish, You're going to
- 29:06need to add, You're going to add a starter and a reliever at the
- 29:09deadline. You're going to be around 500
- 29:11and you're going to push that 88 wins, probably make the
- 29:14playoffs, probably win the Central or get one of those wild
- 29:16card spots. It doesn't seem like a lot of
- 29:18teams in the Central are really, are really trying this year.
- 29:23OK, let's see. My buddy Mike from Chicago wants
- 29:25Edmonds clubhouse stories. I wasn't even here for the
- 29:29Edmonds years when he was a player.
- 29:31Although a Love Jimmy Ball game. Great, dude.
- 29:33Very funny. OK, well, let's see.
- 29:37Cardinal 70. When will Brendan actually
- 29:39finish his facial hair? Oh, that's mean.
- 29:41You know what? I'm not going to do that when
- 29:42Brendan's not even on the podcast here.
- 29:44So, all right, here's the deal I'm going to end.
- 29:48We're right there around 30 minutes.
- 29:51Part of the reason doing this, I wanted to clean up and and
- 29:53finish some of these questions. Actually, did I get almost all
- 29:56of them? I think I got almost all of
- 29:58them. So now I feel bad.
- 29:59I also want to test this mic, so hopefully it sounds good.
- 30:02Hey, there's our sponsors, Triad Bank, my guy Jim Regna, all your
- 30:06local banking, you got a bank local.
- 30:08I'm telling you my rental property business.
- 30:10Smartest thing I ever did, switching from a big National
- 30:13Bank to Triad Bank, a local bank.
- 30:15You got Corner Butcher and Fenton and also Ellisville Chop
- 30:18House, the restaurant in Fenton. Been working with them for like
- 30:215 years. Mike Diffley and family, I think
- 30:23longer than five years. They're fantastic people.
- 30:25And then Saint Louis Equipment and Saint Louis Lawn Care.
- 30:28But for your lawn mower needs, you need to buy a mower.
- 30:32Small engines, we're talking trimmers, blowers.
- 30:35I bought it all there from Saint Louis Equipment and also Saint
- 30:37Louis Lawn Care. They'll do all your grass
- 30:40cutting, if you need mulch, if you need seeding, fertilizer and
- 30:44all that. So there you go.
- 30:46All right, we're going to do a pod with with Brendan later on
