- 2:30Speaker 4: to check out our coverage. Either way, they are available
- 2:32Speaker 4: for you at Metro News Television. Now we get ready
- 2:34Speaker 4: for the Boys State Chairman, which begins tomorrow morning. The
- 2:37Speaker 4: voice of high school sports in West Virginia, Fred Persinger,
- 2:40Speaker 4: will join us for a preview coming up a little
- 2:42Speaker 4: bit later on the show Today plus always a good
- 2:43Speaker 4: time when this guy stops by. Senator Mike Stewart is
- 2:47Speaker 4: here now. If he is confirmed, he will be joining
- 2:50Speaker 4: the Trump administration. But until then, whenever that may be,
- 2:55Speaker 4: he's got some got some things on his mind. And
- 2:57Speaker 4: you may, based on our conversation we were texting back
- 3:02Speaker 4: and forth the other day, you may be surprised at
- 3:04Speaker 4: some of the things that are on Mike Stewart's mind,
- 3:06Speaker 4: so we'll talk to him about that, plus of other
- 3:08Speaker 4: things in the news, and your calls and text are

- 3:16Speaker 4: the Tailor Text three zero four nine three five five
- 3:18Speaker 4: zero zero eight. Well, we are now one week away
- 3:22Speaker 4: from the grand experiment here Metro News Midday hosted by
- 3:26Speaker 4: myself and from WOWK TV thirteen and Tonight Live Amanda Baron.
- 3:30Speaker 4: The show air Noontul three, not only here in Charleston,
- 3:34Speaker 4: but statewide via the Metro News Radio Network. At least
- 3:37Speaker 4: parts of the show will be on Metro News TV.
- 3:40Speaker 4: And it's kind of complicated, but due to contractual reasons,
- 3:44Speaker 4: we won't be able to show Miss baron a Metro
- 3:47Speaker 4: News TV, but at least the two to three o'clock
- 3:49Speaker 4: hour will be on Metro News Television. Now we're planning
- 3:51Speaker 4: on starting that I think next week with Coop and
- 3:55Speaker 4: weekly on on Hotline two, also on Metro News TV.
- 4:00Speaker 4: Exciting stuff, really, and I just want to take time
- 4:04Speaker 4: to thank everyone at Metro News and WVRC Media for
- 4:07Speaker 4: taking a chance on this show. I've been doing radio
- 4:11Speaker 4: now for thirty seven years. I'm in appearances on Metro
- 4:14Speaker 4: News and some national radio programs and TV programs, but
- 4:17Speaker 4: never on a consistent basis, and never really a show.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Quite like this.
- 4:23Speaker 4: So we've had all the meetings, we have more meetings
- 4:25Speaker 4: coming up, and all the stuff that goes on behind
- 4:28Speaker 4: the scenes. Now I guess we have to get to
- 4:29Speaker 4: work and do a show. And I've had several people
- 4:32Speaker 4: that have asked me how the show will look or
- 4:35Speaker 4: sound or both, and I can tell you that the
- 4:39Speaker 4: noon to one hour will be a news format show
- 4:41Speaker 4: hosted primarily by Amanda. I will join during the second
- 4:47Speaker 4: hour before we send her on her way down the
- 4:49Speaker 4: street to her other job, and then I'll handle the
- 4:51Speaker 4: two o'clock hour solo. And the way I envision this,
- 4:56Speaker 4: the two o'clock hour is going to be your time,
- 5:00Speaker 4: and your time will to weigh in on the subjects.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Of the day.
- 5:04Speaker 4: Now, I'll I'll give a lot of my own opinions,
- 5:08Speaker 4: just about as much as I do on this show daily,
- 5:10Speaker 4: but I still prefer to leave the bulk of it
- 5:14Speaker 4: up to you via the phone lines and the text.
- 5:19Speaker 4: We will be booking guests you know on the show.
- 5:23Speaker 4: But I really the vision of this thing is for
- 5:28Speaker 4: it to be West Virginia's show. And again it's not
- 5:31Speaker 4: going to be heard only here in Charleston, but the
- 5:35Speaker 4: same show will air in places like Morgantown, Clarksburg, Martinsburg, Elkins,
- 5:39Speaker 4: et cetera, et cetera. So please remember to put your
- 5:43Speaker 4: teeth in and put on a bra before you call
- 5:45Speaker 4: the show again. It starts next Monday noon till three daily,
- 5:49Speaker 4: replacing Dan Bongino, who is off to join the Trump administration.
- 5:52Speaker 4: We are excited about it, Big Pigli Wigley Hotline three

- 6:11Speaker 4: Visit Bridge Valley, dot E d U. I do want
- 6:14Speaker 4: to put this out there. Over the weekend, we lost
- 6:19Speaker 4: a former member of the radio ranch here the family
- 6:22Speaker 4: here at eleven eleven. Mike Fitzgerald was heard for several
- 6:26Speaker 4: years on our sister station ninety six one KWUS, most
- 6:30Speaker 4: notably part of the morning show with Miss Amanda, not
- 6:34Speaker 4: Amanda Baron, but the other Amanda when the station was
- 6:37Speaker 4: known as The Wolf. Mike had a litany of health
- 6:41Speaker 4: issues and he passed away Saturday in Florida. That's according
- 6:44Speaker 4: to his daughter. And I'll say this, Mike was a
- 6:47Speaker 4: true radio guy. He had worked at several places up
- 6:51Speaker 4: and down the radio dial of America. He and I
- 6:54Speaker 4: never worked together, but certainly knew each other well and
- 6:59Speaker 4: became really good friends. We worked several events together, but
- 7:02Speaker 4: never worked under the same company umbrella at the same time.
- 7:06Speaker 4: But I was thinking about this yesterday. I can remember
- 7:11Speaker 4: one particular day that really sticks out to me. And
- 7:16Speaker 4: you may remember, if you go back to sometime two
- 7:19Speaker 4: thousand and eight, two thousand and maybe through eleven or twelve,
- 7:22Speaker 4: something like that, that Massy the Massy Cole Company CEO
- 7:26Speaker 4: Don Blankenship used to have this big party, a huge
- 7:31Speaker 4: event on twenty two Mountain, which straddles both Mingo and
- 7:35Speaker 4: Logan Counties. Now, Don brought in all the big names
- 7:40Speaker 4: for his employees and their families. I'm talking about folks
- 7:42Speaker 4: like Hank Williams, Junior, and Ted Nugitt and Toby Keith
- 7:45Speaker 4: at late Toby Keith and even brought Sean Hannity in
- 7:48Speaker 4: one year. Don was not shy about spending money to
- 7:52Speaker 4: advertise this event either, so mister Blankenship bought time and
- 7:58Speaker 4: he bought live podcast from every radio and television station
- 8:02Speaker 4: around from Charleston to Huntington, Williamson, Pikeville, Beckley, Bluefield.
- 8:07Speaker 5: We were all there at.
- 8:08Speaker 4: The same time, and I guess the statute of limitations
- 8:12Speaker 4: has run out, so I can tell this story now
- 8:16Speaker 4: if you're familiar at all with this, Well, the area
- 8:19Speaker 4: that was known as twenty two Mountain is a big
- 8:21Speaker 4: old place. I mean, it probably stretches thirty miles, you know,
- 8:26Speaker 4: as I said, and it kind of darts in and
- 8:28Speaker 4: out between Logan and Mingo Counties. So, as I said,
- 8:32Speaker 4: we were all up there, and when you have that
- 8:34Speaker 4: many radio and television stations up there, space can be
- 8:39Speaker 4: an issue. So they asked some of us to try
- 8:42Speaker 4: to carpool if we could. Now, I was working at
- 8:44Speaker 4: the time at WVW Radio and Logan, and you know,
- 8:49Speaker 4: it really wasn't a big deal for me up there.
- 8:53Speaker 4: I left my car in the community of Omar, and
- 8:57Speaker 4: I caught a ride up the mountain with a buddy
- 9:00Speaker 4: of mine who actually worked at Massey, and I figure,
- 9:03Speaker 4: I know everybody in southern West Virginia. When it's time
- 9:06Speaker 4: to come off the mountain, I'll catch a ride with
- 9:07Speaker 4: somebody back to pick up my car to cut to
- 9:11Speaker 4: the chase. End of the day comes and I'm looking
- 9:14Speaker 4: around at this motley crew of radio people, and there
- 9:19Speaker 4: were three of us standing there together. It was myself,
- 9:26Speaker 4: Mike Fitzgerald and the late Al Woody from Crosstown WQBE,
- 9:33Speaker 4: and with some folks up there. Some alcohol may or
- 9:38Speaker 4: may not have been involved, and I remember that whoever
- 9:44Speaker 4: that Al Woody was riding with in their station van
- 9:47Speaker 4: had left. So here we are, Mike, myself, Al Woody
- 9:52Speaker 4: all on this mountain. And you have to keep in
- 9:55Speaker 4: mind that Al and Mike and their stations were big
- 9:58Speaker 4: time competitors the time here in the Charleston market. Now,
- 10:02Speaker 4: when I was at WVW, our biggest competition was from
- 10:05Speaker 4: Williamston and Pikeville in places like that. So for me,
- 10:08Speaker 4: hanging out with Mike or Al was really not that
- 10:10Speaker 4: big a deal, but apparently it was for them, especially
- 10:15Speaker 4: had their respective station managers, programmers and whatnot found all
- 10:20Speaker 4: this out. So Mike offers to drive me and al
- 10:25Speaker 4: Woody off the mountain. So we all pile into what
- 10:30Speaker 4: was then the Wolf Radio station truck, which I think
- 10:34Speaker 4: is still the truck we're driving today for our sister
- 10:36Speaker 4: Dation ninety eight to seven.
- 10:37Speaker 3: Of the mountain.
- 10:38Speaker 4: It's been wrapped and re wrapped a couple of times.
- 10:41Speaker 4: So away we go. Mike Fitzgerald, ol Woody, and Me
- 10:46Speaker 4: and IW only had to get to Logan because, as
- 10:50Speaker 4: many of you may know this about the late Owl,
- 10:53Speaker 4: he had a variety of side hustles and he was
- 10:55Speaker 4: working the night shift at Loew's of Logan at the time,
- 10:58Speaker 4: then getting up the next morning to do the morning
- 11:02Speaker 4: show on WQBE. And somehow we all made it off
- 11:07Speaker 4: that mountain and had a whole lot of good stories
- 11:10Speaker 4: on the way down. All of course passed away a
- 11:12Speaker 4: couple of years ago. Now we lost Mike over the weekend,
- 11:15Speaker 4: so our thoughts and prayer certainly go out to Mike
- 11:18Speaker 4: and his family passed away in Florida. He was one
- 11:21Speaker 4: of a kind, to say the least. But Dave Island

- 12:00Speaker 4: the girls state basketball tournament and to preview the boys
- 12:03Speaker 4: state tournament, which cons underway tomorrow at Kyle Seaman Convinced Center.
- 12:06Speaker 4: Let me knock out a couple of texts here before
- 12:08Speaker 4: we go to break Texas Day. Thanks for having Mike
- 12:10Speaker 4: Pushkin on Friday. Well, yeah, Texas, I really hope that
- 12:17Speaker 4: Democrat Pushkin is paying for his time on your radio station. Well,
- 12:21Speaker 4: I mean, Mike is the state Democratic Party chair and
- 12:24Speaker 4: he is uh, he represents this area, so no, he
- 12:27Speaker 4: does not. None of my guests are paid to appear
- 12:31Speaker 4: on the show. I'm barely paid to appear on the show.
- 12:36Speaker 3: Okay.
- 12:38Speaker 4: Text says, while you keep going after Dave Allen, much
- 12:40Speaker 4: of what you say about him is actually true. You
- 12:43Speaker 4: have to give it to him that he was smart
- 12:44Speaker 4: enough to partner with the very talented Amanda Baron on
- 12:47Speaker 4: the new midday show. That show will be a huge
- 12:49Speaker 4: improvement from what we currently see on Metro News TV.
- 12:53Speaker 4: I don't know who that was named after him, Dave,
- 13:01Speaker 4: you're a veteran supporter. Did you hear about the West
- 13:03Speaker 4: Virginia Medal of Honor recipient Charles Calvin Rodgers page being

- 13:12Speaker 4: some uproar from our federal delegation. If not, I'm pretty
- 13:14Speaker 4: sure I know the reason why, says a Texter Texas
- 13:20Speaker 4: Mike Stewart's confirmation. For the sake of West Virginia cannots
- 13:22Speaker 4: come soon enough, we'll talked about Mike to Mike about

- 13:30Speaker 4: there could be things he's not allowed.
- 13:32Speaker 3: To talk about.
- 13:33Speaker 4: So he can talk about what's going on the legislature though,

- 17:55Speaker 5: have any tournaments they've been through at a Row one
- 17:57Speaker 5: hundred and thirty seven or whatever it was. But honestly,
- 18:01Speaker 5: West Virginia could have done themselves right by beating Colorado.
- 18:06Speaker 5: Maybe Big Colorado, you're in Okay. Maybe not though maybe
- 18:09Speaker 5: not because there was another scenario in there, because if
- 18:12Speaker 5: UAB and Memphis and all that nonsense, it had it.
- 18:15Speaker 5: But again, you got to take care of business. I thought,
- 18:19Speaker 5: here's the problem. One hundred and eleven brackets for the
- 18:24Speaker 5: you know, Joe Lenardi and Ciba and all the other
- 18:26Speaker 5: stuff they do. One hundred and eleven out of one
- 18:28Speaker 5: hundred and eleven had West Virginia in. So I think
- 18:32Speaker 5: Mounted Deer fans were thinking, Okay, we're in. No, don't
- 18:34Speaker 5: worry about it. You know they're in, and then all
- 18:35Speaker 5: of a sudden, you're not in. And that's that's a
- 18:38Speaker 5: tough pill to swallow, you know, he who knows it's
- 18:42Speaker 5: a crazy, crazy world. I don't know what they're going
- 18:44Speaker 5: to do. I know they're not in the n It
- 18:46Speaker 5: that's already been pushed out bread or heard or something
- 18:50Speaker 5: that the Big twelve is tractually obligated to do this
- 18:55Speaker 5: Vegas tournament of sixteen teams. And if that's the case,
- 19:00Speaker 5: West Virginia maybe in that. I don't know.
- 19:01Speaker 4: But the women's team is in the NCAA tournament. So
- 19:04Speaker 4: see a lot of folks will be turning their attention
- 19:06Speaker 4: that way.
- 19:06Speaker 5: And it's close. They can travel to watch the Mountains play.
- 19:09Speaker 5: So and that's oddly enough.
- 19:11Speaker 4: Oddly enough to Carolina, Yeah, I love that. You can't
- 19:15Speaker 4: write this stuff all right, So let's talk about the girls.
- 19:17Speaker 4: Tournament over the weekend, four champions work Crown was that
- 19:20Speaker 4: everything you thought it would be. Any surprises, standout performances, Oh.
- 19:24Speaker 5: There are a lot of standout performances, no question. And
- 19:27Speaker 5: uh you know the the fourth championship games were all
- 19:31Speaker 5: all right, here we go, Fred the horrible. They were horrible.
- 19:35Speaker 5: I mean from the fat oddly.
- 19:36Speaker 4: Enough, oddly enough, you're a good friend of mine. Speedy
- 19:38Speaker 4: Bevans and I were having coffee this morning and he said,
- 19:41Speaker 4: the Speedy will be on the state and the boys tournament.
- 19:43Speaker 4: Speedy said the same thing.
- 19:44Speaker 5: Yeah, it was just not it was not It was
- 19:46Speaker 5: great basketball, but it was in good basketball to watch,
- 19:48Speaker 5: if you know what I mean. Yeah, Uh, you know
- 19:50Speaker 5: the winners they played extremely well. The losers they did
- 19:53Speaker 5: what they had to do to lose. They did it well.
- 19:56Speaker 5: Uh so I think the boys will be better. I
- 19:59Speaker 5: hope so. And again I'm a firm. I've said it
- 20:03Speaker 5: thousands of times. West Virginia doesn't need four classes and
- 20:07Speaker 5: this is what you get. And somebody said, well, but
- 20:10Speaker 5: you know they're here. Okay, fine. The last memory, if
- 20:13Speaker 5: I'm a senior, the last memory I have in my
- 20:15Speaker 5: high school career getting beat to death. I don't want
- 20:18Speaker 5: that much. Yeah, I don't want it. I don't care
- 20:20Speaker 5: where it happens. I don't want it. So West Virginia
- 20:23Speaker 5: is not a state large enough or have four teams
- 20:25Speaker 5: or four classes in any sport. We're just not accept it.
- 20:29Speaker 5: And don't say it's everybody gets a trophy thing that
- 20:33Speaker 5: I don't like. I just don't care for it. I
- 20:35Speaker 5: don't think that's the way you do it. I think
- 20:37Speaker 5: we lost a lot when we went to the new
- 20:40Speaker 5: regional formats where the sectional tournaments were fun. I mean,
- 20:43Speaker 5: that was exciting time for all schools. Now they're gone.
- 20:46Speaker 5: Now you're a part of a whatever number of teams
- 20:49Speaker 5: are in your region, and that varies from region to region.
- 20:52Speaker 5: It was just like I was talking Rick Green from George, Washington.
- 20:56Speaker 5: He's in there, his team is in a third seed
- 20:59Speaker 5: and deservedly so, and he was saying, you know, I
- 21:02Speaker 5: had to beat one team to get to the state tournament.
- 21:06Speaker 5: That's what's wrong with that. A lot of things, he said,
- 21:09Speaker 5: a lot of things is wrong with that. So this
- 21:11Speaker 5: system that they put into place this year not good.
- 21:14Speaker 5: I don't know if they're going to change it, but
- 21:16Speaker 5: that's up to the principles and folks that be like that,
- 21:20Speaker 5: not the SSAC. Okay, don't get on them. It's up
- 21:23Speaker 5: to the principles. They make the rules, all right.
- 21:25Speaker 4: So let's get to the boys tournaments. Top seeds.
- 21:29Speaker 5: Oh yeah, you know Class A, tug Valley, Class Double A,
- 21:32Speaker 5: Williamstown Class Triple A, the top seed is Bridgeport, and
- 21:36Speaker 5: in Class Quada the top seed is spring Mills. Now,
- 21:39Speaker 5: last week I said I thought Triple A was the
- 21:42Speaker 5: toughest bracket in the girls. I think QUAUDA is certainly
- 21:45Speaker 5: the toughest bracket in the boys tournament, coming up one
- 21:48Speaker 5: through honestly one through eight, and I'm not exaggerating. I
- 21:52Speaker 5: think one through eight could win it, and of course
- 21:54Speaker 5: only one will. And certainly Spring Mills is the team
- 21:57Speaker 5: to beat. Right now, how about spring Mills and Martinsburg.
- 22:02Speaker 5: They are in the same town almost of them, and
- 22:05Speaker 5: I have to travel three hundreds of miles to play.
- 22:07Speaker 5: We could do this up there, Yeah, two weeks ago
- 22:10Speaker 5: we could have done So that's but you know, there's
- 22:12Speaker 5: going to be some good matches. I think Spring Valley
- 22:14Speaker 5: and Beckley will be good. I think Morgantown, Parkersburg South,
- 22:17Speaker 5: Mike Fallon is the head coach of Parkersburg South, a
- 22:19Speaker 5: great coach and certainly well I know what Dave Tallman's doing.
- 22:22Speaker 5: I think a good note too. Dave Tauman from Martin's
- 22:25Speaker 5: or Morgantown is in and Dave Tallman, his dad from
- 22:30Speaker 5: Magnolia is in and they it happened twenty five years ago.
- 22:34Speaker 3: I was going to say, has that happened before?
- 22:36Speaker 5: Well, when Dave Tollman played for Dave Thomas as a player,
- 22:40Speaker 5: So that that's a great story and hopefully we'll do
- 22:42Speaker 5: a story on that on the network, and I'm sure
- 22:44Speaker 5: we will. But now there's a lot of good storylines.
- 22:47Speaker 5: You know, when you look at at Single A Tech,
- 22:49Speaker 5: Valley's a very good team. I've seen them play. Tucker
- 22:52Speaker 5: County is always around. They're that blue collar type of
- 22:56Speaker 5: team that's you love to watch play. They're the two
- 22:59Speaker 5: seed in Class Double A Williamstown's I mentioned the one seed,
- 23:02Speaker 5: the two seed willing Central Catholic. If those two teams
- 23:05Speaker 5: are gonna make it out, I think they'd be a
- 23:06Speaker 5: half a game. Bridgeport, I think, honestly is a solid
- 23:10Speaker 5: solid number one. I will be surprised if anyone really
- 23:13Speaker 5: gives them any troll. Maybe maybe Shady and Shady will
- 23:17Speaker 5: only meet them if they get to the championship game goes.
- 23:19Speaker 5: They're in two different brackets, you know. And Fairmont senior
- 23:22Speaker 5: Dave rettin his team is back. He's a four seed.
- 23:25Speaker 5: He could meet Bridgeport in the semi finals if he
- 23:28Speaker 5: beats Chapmanville. But Brad Nappery, you know, Chapmanville Tigers are
- 23:32Speaker 5: always fun to watch. Yeah, we'll see what happens there.
- 23:35Speaker 5: But you know, I think it's going to be a
- 23:37Speaker 5: great tournament. Starts tomorrow morning, bright and early at nine
- 23:39Speaker 5: thirty with the Class Single A teams getting no no, no,
- 23:44Speaker 5: whoa whoa WOA with the Class Triple A teams. That's
- 23:48Speaker 5: what is. Triple A plays mostly Tomorrow or tomorrow sandwich
- 23:52Speaker 5: in with a couple of quality games, and it's a
- 23:55Speaker 5: strange scheduling, but it inter rotates every year, so I
- 23:58Speaker 5: guess it's fair for everyone to get you know, for
- 24:00Speaker 5: tripa A. For example, if you went on Tuesday morning
- 24:03Speaker 5: at nine thirty, you won't play again until Friday at ninth.
- 24:08Speaker 4: And as a coach, how do you feel about that?
- 24:10Speaker 4: I mean, if you're a coach, I mean you got that.
- 24:12Speaker 4: You come off that win, and then you got it.
- 24:14Speaker 4: You're thinking, I don't play until practically next week.
- 24:17Speaker 5: But it's about the same shield you have in regular
- 24:20Speaker 5: season Tuesday Fridays.
- 24:22Speaker 10: Point.
- 24:22Speaker 5: Here's the deal, though, if you're a team that is close,
- 24:26Speaker 5: you just go back home. Kids probably go to school,
- 24:29Speaker 5: sleep in their own beds, do the thing you practice,
- 24:31Speaker 5: just like a normal regular season week. But how about
- 24:34Speaker 5: a team like, let's use the farthest team away. Well, wow,
- 24:38Speaker 5: they're kind of lucky. I guess the farthest team away
- 24:41Speaker 5: is Elkins. Do you take your kids all the way
- 24:43Speaker 5: back to Elkins just to return if you win? Or
- 24:46Speaker 5: do you wrestle with them in a hotel for three days?
- 24:50Speaker 5: I don't know, So that's a I guess that's a
- 24:52Speaker 5: decision the coaches get to make. But yeah, it's a
- 24:55Speaker 5: it's a fun week. It's really no question about it.
- 24:57Speaker 5: It's a it's a great way to wrap up the
- 25:00Speaker 5: high school football basketball season rather and I'm sure we'll
- 25:04Speaker 5: have some good games. I'm looking forward to a number
- 25:06Speaker 5: of games on this schedule. So you know, thirty two
- 25:10Speaker 5: teams are down and we'll see what four go home
- 25:13Speaker 5: with the big trophy.
- 25:14Speaker 4: Give me one if you're looking at your sheet, there
- 25:17Speaker 4: at one game that sticks out to you, as this
- 25:20Speaker 4: is whether you're calling the game or not with the
- 25:22Speaker 4: one that is most intriguing to you. Is there one
- 25:26Speaker 4: may or maybe I'll follow that up by saying, or
- 25:28Speaker 4: a certain player that you are really looking forward to seeing.
- 25:31Speaker 5: Now, you know, there's a lot of great players, so
- 25:33Speaker 5: I don't really go down to players exactly right. But
- 25:37Speaker 5: the game, and I'm actually on the call of the
- 25:39Speaker 5: game is Wednesday night at nine o'clock in Spring Valley
- 25:42Speaker 5: and Beckley. I think that will be a great, great game,
- 25:46Speaker 5: and both teams are very good. Both teams are solid,
- 25:49Speaker 5: Both teams have everything you need as far as height
- 25:51Speaker 5: and speed, and they both play mostly alike, you know,
- 25:55Speaker 5: in your face defense and that kind of thing. So
- 25:57Speaker 5: I think that's going to be a great game. That's
- 25:59Speaker 5: in quite a if you look at each class real quick,
- 26:01Speaker 5: if you look at each class, I think Nitro and
- 26:03Speaker 5: Ripley is going to be a good game that comes
- 26:05Speaker 5: up on Wednesday morning at eleven to fifteen and Class
- 26:08Speaker 5: single A. I think the best game in the first
- 26:10Speaker 5: class is probably going to be the last game Thursday
- 26:15Speaker 5: night at nine Greater Beckley Christian and Saint Joseph Central
- 26:18Speaker 5: hunting to private schools going after one another that really
- 26:22Speaker 5: have a good pedigree of players and they they're always
- 26:26Speaker 5: it has It's been a while since Saint Joseph Central's
- 26:28Speaker 5: boys team has been there, so looking forward to seeing
- 26:30Speaker 5: them and then I think in Class Double A, if
- 26:33Speaker 5: we can get out to the if both these teams
- 26:36Speaker 5: get to the semi finals, West Side and Wheeling Central,
- 26:39Speaker 5: should be a heck of a ball game, all right Now,
- 26:42Speaker 5: the EU Logan Wildcats, they play Tuesday Morning or Tuesday
- 26:46Speaker 5: night brother at nine o'clock and they get Wyoming East.
- 26:49Speaker 5: I think they're split in their three season two Yes,
- 26:51Speaker 5: they did so very familiar with each other and that's
- 26:53Speaker 5: a that's a good thing as well.
- 26:55Speaker 4: All right, Fred, We will be listening of course, the
- 26:57Speaker 4: daytime Action locally on Charleston's ESPN Radio, Nighttime Action WCCHS,
- 27:03Speaker 4: and of course all four championship games will be on
- 27:04Speaker 4: Metro News TV. Great time to remind you if you
- 27:06Speaker 4: have a done so already download that app read well.
- 27:09Speaker 4: I'll leave you alone next Monday, I promise, Okay, I'll.
- 27:12Speaker 5: Come in just say hey, you know what the tournament. Yeah,
- 27:14Speaker 5: there you go.
- 27:16Speaker 4: All right, Fred person and the boice of high school
- 27:17Speaker 4: sports in West Virginia. Always a good time, the most
- 27:20Speaker 4: wonderful time of the year, the girls in the boys
- 27:22Speaker 4: states basketball tournaments. And again I got to get a
- 27:24Speaker 4: plug in for my alma mater, Logan Wildcats. All right, uh,
- 27:28Speaker 4: Tex says there were a lot of people on Twitter
- 27:30Speaker 4: who are not Mountaineer fans or ticked at North Carolina
- 27:33Speaker 4: was gifted a spot, even the host of sirius XM
- 27:36Speaker 4: College Sports Radio or angry. Yeah, I saw a lot
- 27:38Speaker 4: of that too, Tex says. Talking about basketball, Morrissey is
- 27:41Speaker 4: wanting to sue to get WVU a tournament spots.
- 27:44Speaker 2: What are they?
- 27:44Speaker 4: A DEI team? I thought we were about meritocracy in
- 27:48Speaker 4: this state. WVU season didn't merit a tournament spot. Also,
- 27:52Speaker 4: Morrissey has only one move, Sue Sue, Sue. Can we

- 28:40Speaker 11: We all want what's best for our kids, safe, healthy choices,
- 28:46Speaker 11: but some politicians right here in West Virginia are going
- 28:50Speaker 11: way too far. They're pushing a van on safe ingredients
- 28:54Speaker 11: in our grocery stores. That ban would jack up prices
- 28:57Speaker 11: on almost everything we buy. Banning these types of ingredients
- 29:01Speaker 11: would eliminate sixty percent of the food on grocery shelves,
- 29:04Speaker 11: hiking prices even more when we're already struggling. Worse, it
- 29:08Speaker 11: would cost thousands of jobs all across West Virginia. Governor

- 30:34Speaker 4: for having me, Thank you for being here. I'm gonna
- 30:37Speaker 4: go ahead start with this and say, if this seems
- 30:39Speaker 4: to be on everybody's mind over the last twelve hours
- 30:43Speaker 4: or so, go ahead and weigh in on WVU not
- 30:45Speaker 4: making the NCAA basketball tam.
- 30:47Speaker 3: Well, it's a travesty, of course.
- 30:49Speaker 12: And unlike everybody else, I was really upset by this,
- 30:53Speaker 12: even more so that the University of North Carolina seems
- 30:56Speaker 12: to be the team that replaced us in pure metrics.
- 30:59Speaker 12: We'd like to think it's based off merit, right, but
- 31:02Speaker 12: this clearly wasn't based off merit. But when you lose
- 31:05Speaker 12: to a number sixteen seed in the tournament, you introduce doubt.
- 31:11Speaker 12: And when you introduce doubt, schools like West Virginia get
- 31:14Speaker 12: cut out. And so next time, what I'd say is
- 31:16Speaker 12: we got to we gotta win those games against the
- 31:18Speaker 12: number sixteen seeds and finish our business. But I think
- 31:22Speaker 12: we could have done some damage in this tournament. It's terrible.
- 31:25Speaker 4: I'm gonna give a really unpopular opinion here real quick,
- 31:27Speaker 4: and we'll move on. First of all, let me say
- 31:29Speaker 4: I'm one hundred percent thinking that WVU should have been
- 31:32Speaker 4: in the Big Dance, no doubt about it.
- 31:34Speaker 3: I get it.
- 31:34Speaker 4: People are frustrated, and I think they have every right
- 31:37Speaker 4: to be. However, I think sometimes people forget that college athletics,
- 31:41Speaker 4: like it or not, is a big business and it's
- 31:44Speaker 4: all about butts in the seats, and it's all about ratings,
- 31:47Speaker 4: et cetera. As bad as we don't want to think,
- 31:48Speaker 4: it's true. In West Virginia, many people would say we're
- 31:51Speaker 4: probably not the national draw, that North Carolina is.
- 31:55Speaker 12: Well, well, well let me cut let me cut you
- 31:56Speaker 12: off here, though, because the big twelve we've got in
- 32:00Speaker 12: college athletics.
- 32:02Speaker 3: This is unfortunate. What's happened.
- 32:03Speaker 12: I was one of those kids that grew up I
- 32:05Speaker 12: love college athletics. I love college basketball, college football. But
- 32:09Speaker 12: what has happened the professionalization of college athletics is turning
- 32:14Speaker 12: people off. When you get the SEC and the Big
- 32:17Speaker 12: ten getting all the dollars, getting all the television time.
- 32:22Speaker 12: You take great programs like those teams in the Big twelve,
- 32:25Speaker 12: a lot of other programs.
- 32:26Speaker 3: Just like us.
- 32:27Speaker 12: We're not competing on a level playing field, not at all.
- 32:31Speaker 12: And I acknowledge that fact. But when fourteen teams out
- 32:35Speaker 12: of the SEC make the tournament, and I know this
- 32:38Speaker 12: is not a sports show, there's a problem with it.
- 32:41Speaker 3: Though.
- 32:41Speaker 12: There's a problem when when marginal, not so good teams
- 32:45Speaker 12: in the SEC are making it over good teams that competed,
- 32:49Speaker 12: like West Virginia. But it's not just I don't think
- 32:52Speaker 12: it's a problem of this tournament. It's a problem with
- 32:54Speaker 12: college athletics. They are turning off places like West Virginia
- 32:58Speaker 12: to the current state of disa disaster of college athletics
- 33:02Speaker 12: in America.
- 33:03Speaker 4: We had a text here somebody sent me a tweet
- 33:04Speaker 4: from the Voice of Morgantown that said, not sure if
- 33:06Speaker 4: there's ever been a more clear cut case of corruption
- 33:09Speaker 4: in college athletics, why or athletic directors making these decisions.
- 33:12Speaker 4: What's clear now is that Bubba Cunningham just made one
- 33:14Speaker 4: hundred thousand dollars at West Virginia's expense because he of
- 33:17Speaker 4: course with North Carolina and got to get a little
- 33:20Speaker 4: bit of a bonus there. All right, So did you
- 33:22Speaker 4: have to do check out my day viatorial over the weekend,
- 33:25Speaker 4: Kim or me and tell me you did.
- 33:27Speaker 3: I did? I did, tell me what it's all right?
- 33:29Speaker 4: So basically I said, I said, Mike, I said, and
- 33:31Speaker 4: I knew that your guy that will that will discuss
- 33:34Speaker 4: this with me. I said, I remember a time where
- 33:36Speaker 4: Republicans were all about smaller government, and it seems to
- 33:41Speaker 4: me that many, many not all, want government more involved
- 33:47Speaker 4: in their lives.
- 33:49Speaker 3: And I mean, maybe.
- 33:50Speaker 4: It's more on well there's some here, but it's also
- 33:53Speaker 4: some other national front as well, going after free speech
- 33:56Speaker 4: and things of that nature. A lot of folks on
- 33:58Speaker 4: the GOP that i'll call it for big government on
- 34:01Speaker 4: a lot of things, Mike, when they know they didn't
- 34:04Speaker 4: want it all those years before.
- 34:05Speaker 12: Well, listen, you've asked a question that we could spend
- 34:08Speaker 12: hours talking about.
- 34:10Speaker 3: I talk about this all the time.
- 34:11Speaker 12: I try to be intellectually consistent with my views here.
- 34:14Speaker 12: I believe in smaller government. I believe in people. If
- 34:17Speaker 12: you look at the bills I'm sponsoring most of them
- 34:20Speaker 12: are about people, and especially kids and families. But I
- 34:25Speaker 12: think there's something to what you're saying, which is that
- 34:27Speaker 12: we have two parties within the Republican Party today. We
- 34:31Speaker 12: have the traditional small government government which does the least,
- 34:36Speaker 12: does best, and then we have the other group of
- 34:39Speaker 12: Republicans that are really the old Democrat party that seem
- 34:42Speaker 12: to think that bigger government, government doing everything for everybody,
- 34:47Speaker 12: is the way we should be doing things. And so
- 34:48Speaker 12: I fall into the first camp. I believe that government
- 34:51Speaker 12: which does not more than it's supposed to do and
- 34:54Speaker 12: empowers people's probably the best government we could have. But
- 34:57Speaker 12: I don't disagree with you.
- 34:58Speaker 4: So we're a day thirty. I believe in the legislative session,
- 35:02Speaker 4: and to be honest, Senator, not a lot of bills
- 35:04Speaker 4: being passed.
- 35:06Speaker 12: Well, I think there's a lot of bills being passed,
- 35:07Speaker 12: but there's nothing that I think your listeners could say
- 35:10Speaker 12: mean a whole lot to putting more food on the table,
- 35:13Speaker 12: or fixing the roof, or getting their kids through school
- 35:17Speaker 12: with better test scores. And so I appreciate that frustration,
- 35:22Speaker 12: and so I think this session, you have these sessions periodically,
- 35:26Speaker 12: We've got a brand new governor still getting his sea
- 35:29Speaker 12: legs from becoming governor. That's a different role than being
- 35:32Speaker 12: Attorney general. I think he's doing a good job trying
- 35:35Speaker 12: to figure out how all of the pieces work together.
- 35:38Speaker 12: And then we have ten new members in the state
- 35:40Speaker 12: Senate out of thirty four members. Ten that's a huge
- 35:43Speaker 12: percentage of folks learning how to be state senators. And
- 35:46Speaker 12: over on the House of Delegate side, another huge turnover.
- 35:50Speaker 12: And so I think you'll see some good stuff come
- 35:52Speaker 12: out of this session. But we pass some huge bills
- 35:55Speaker 12: over the past few years taking down taxes in massive
- 35:58Speaker 12: ways that I think you can't do that every single year.
- 36:02Speaker 12: You've got to have some revenue come in the door.
- 36:03Speaker 12: But keep in mind there are some big issues coming
- 36:06Speaker 12: out of this session. Child welfare, I believe, is the
- 36:08Speaker 12: number to me, and I think to many of the
- 36:11Speaker 12: people listening to your show, child welfare. The crisis we
- 36:15Speaker 12: have in child welfare in West Virginia to me is
- 36:17Speaker 12: number one. It is the intersection and bullseye of both
- 36:21Speaker 12: the economy and those social issues that we care about.
- 36:25Speaker 12: And when you have federal judges and state judges and
- 36:28Speaker 12: people in the system saying the foster care system our
- 36:31Speaker 12: CPS system and the court system don't work together. It's broken.
- 36:35Speaker 12: We got a problem, right. This should be a red
- 36:38Speaker 12: red flag SOS going out to all West Virginians. We
- 36:42Speaker 12: had a bill in my committee. We brought the Secretary
- 36:46Speaker 12: of the Department of Human Services in. We offered help.
- 36:50Speaker 12: The response we got back was thanks, but no thanks.
- 36:54Speaker 12: We can do this on our own. But I've heard
- 36:56Speaker 12: this before, and so I'm going to take another bite
- 36:59Speaker 12: at this apple next week. It's going to be a
- 37:01Speaker 12: bigger bill. I think we need this roadmap. We've got
- 37:04Speaker 12: to fix the system. It is in crisis. And when
- 37:07Speaker 12: you have six thousand kids in foster care in West Virginia,
- 37:11Speaker 12: when you have the top state in the country for
- 37:13Speaker 12: grandparents raising their grandchildren, when you have the opiate crisis
- 37:17Speaker 12: that we do, this is a critical point in time
- 37:21Speaker 12: where there is buy in across the board.
- 37:24Speaker 3: We can't miss this opportunity.
- 37:26Speaker 4: Todd Gewaw State Senator Mike Stewer of a Dave Island
- 37:28Speaker 4: showing five eighty Live brought you in part by Pinnacle

- 37:33Speaker 4: health issues, allergies, respiratory problems, and more. Pinnacle for specialized
- 37:37Speaker 4: indoor air quality services for residential, commercial, and industrial type
- 37:40Speaker 4: settings Visa Pinnacle Corp dot net. Because what you don't
- 37:43Speaker 4: know can hurts you. Yeah, it's interesting that I'm glad
- 37:45Speaker 4: you brought that up because I circled that in my
- 37:47Speaker 4: notes here in this post that you did on X
- 37:49Speaker 4: last week, and you called the failed child welfare system
- 37:52Speaker 4: in West Virginia, as you just said, the intersection between
- 37:55Speaker 4: our economy and social fabric. And when I saw the exchange,
- 38:00Speaker 4: if you will, the dialogue back and forth between you
- 38:03Speaker 4: and the gentlemen that you referenced earlier, you got a
- 38:05Speaker 4: little heated there.
- 38:07Speaker 12: Well, listen, I care about these if you look at
- 38:09Speaker 12: the bills I sponsor. In fact, the next job I'm
- 38:11Speaker 12: getting ready to undertake, right if I get confirmed by
- 38:14Speaker 12: the United States Senate and get a chance to work
- 38:16Speaker 12: with Bobby Kennedy and the whole team at the Department
- 38:19Speaker 12: of Health and Human Services.
- 38:21Speaker 3: Uh, there is no there is no position.
- 38:24Speaker 12: There is no entity in the country that touches more families, families,
- 38:29Speaker 12: I'm talking children and folks who really need help than
- 38:33Speaker 12: the Department of Health and Human Services.
- 38:35Speaker 3: So I'm excited by that. Challenge.
- 38:36Speaker 12: But as I finish finish up things here in West Virginia,
- 38:40Speaker 12: and if you look at the past, most of my
- 38:43Speaker 12: bills touch on families. Whether it's the Cohen Cradoc Student
- 38:46Speaker 12: Athlete Safety Bill, a critically critically important bill that will
- 38:50Speaker 12: transform the way we view safety for our kids competing
- 38:54Speaker 12: on fields and courts and uh and and tracks all
- 38:58Speaker 12: across West Virginia. Or when you look at the Joel
- 39:02Speaker 12: Archer Substance Abuse Intervention Act, which will be for the
- 39:05Speaker 12: first time ever allow West Virginians who have dependent children
- 39:09Speaker 12: eighteen to twenty six years old today, if they have
- 39:13Speaker 12: a substance abuse problem and you want to get them help,
- 39:15Speaker 12: you can check them in. They'll agree to go, but
- 39:18Speaker 12: they can check themselves right back out they're an adult.
- 39:20Speaker 3: This will allow a parent of a loved one.
- 39:23Speaker 12: We call it Joel Archer Substance Abuse Intervention Act because
- 39:26Speaker 12: Joel was one of those adult children that didn't get
- 39:29Speaker 12: the help, didn't allow the help to be brought to him,
- 39:33Speaker 12: and couldn't get long term treatment. But this will allow
- 39:36Speaker 12: parents or a loved one to try to go get
- 39:39Speaker 12: that mental hygiene, a determination that they're abused to drugs
- 39:43Speaker 12: that they're a substance abuse person in terms of their
- 39:49Speaker 12: use of whether it's narcotics, ventyl heroin, whatever it happens
- 39:53Speaker 12: to be, and get them in voluntary long term treatment,
- 39:57Speaker 12: a chance to save these kids those faces.
- 40:00Speaker 3: That fill my wallet.
- 40:01Speaker 12: And so this is a bill that could have big
- 40:03Speaker 12: impact in terms of trying to turn the corner on
- 40:06Speaker 12: a substance abuse crisis that is not going away.
- 40:10Speaker 4: And Senator I will say this, Uh, the things that
- 40:12Speaker 4: you that you brought up there, I mean, I think
- 40:16Speaker 4: that's where our focus needs to be.
- 40:19Speaker 2: Now.
- 40:19Speaker 4: It's easy for me, as a member the media, who
- 40:21Speaker 4: you know, has never never served in the legislature, to
- 40:25Speaker 4: set back and criticize. But I want to I want
- 40:27Speaker 4: to see more as a as a voter, I'm saying
- 40:30Speaker 4: as a taxpayer, I want to see more focus on
- 40:32Speaker 4: things like what you're talking about here, and a little
- 40:35Speaker 4: bit less on a lot of the social issues.
- 40:38Speaker 12: Well, I got to tell you, I'm not in any
- 40:39Speaker 12: of the claques. So when you when you get to
- 40:41Speaker 12: the state senator of the House of Delegates, there are
- 40:42Speaker 12: clicks that develop, and I'm not in any of those cliques.
- 40:45Speaker 3: I'm pretty independent.
- 40:46Speaker 12: I think most folks will tell you, Stuart's pretty independent,
- 40:48Speaker 12: but I try to keep my focus on what matters
- 40:51Speaker 12: to my constituents. We're going to run a bill today.
- 40:53Speaker 12: I think it comes out of my committee that's going
- 40:55Speaker 12: to provide a utility rate credit, not tax credit, utility
- 41:00Speaker 12: rate credit for folks who just don't have reliable water service,
- 41:03Speaker 12: a reliable electricity service so they can get a generator
- 41:06Speaker 12: or a water buffalo. Listen, we got folks in Lincoln County,
- 41:10Speaker 12: Logan County, Boone County, Macdale. I can keep going if
- 41:16Speaker 12: they have any water, it's brown water. This is a problem.
- 41:19Speaker 12: We've got to fix these issues. We can do this right.
- 41:23Speaker 12: This isn't rocket science. And when it comes to electricity service,
- 41:27Speaker 12: we can't pay our bills. We're tapped out. I hear
- 41:30Speaker 12: from folks that just don't have one dollar left. But
- 41:33Speaker 12: how about the reliability of that service?
- 41:36Speaker 3: Right?
- 41:36Speaker 12: Why are the trees still next to the lines across
- 41:40Speaker 12: West Virginia. I thought we learned in the Durracho that
- 41:43Speaker 12: if there's not a tree above the power line, that
- 41:46Speaker 12: that tree can't fall on the power line and make
- 41:48Speaker 12: the power go down. There's not a little storm that
- 41:52Speaker 12: happens in West Virginia. Not a little snowstorm, not a
- 41:55Speaker 12: little windstorm where we don't have absolute havoc for folks.
- 41:58Speaker 12: And it's over and over and over again. We've had
- 42:02Speaker 12: it with bad public customer service. We've had it with
- 42:06Speaker 12: not being able to call these utility companies and get
- 42:08Speaker 12: an answer as to when my service will be restored.
- 42:11Speaker 3: And we've had.
- 42:12Speaker 12: It when the wind blows a little bit, or we
- 42:14Speaker 12: get a little bit of snow or a little bit
- 42:16Speaker 12: of ice and all that power goes down. People in
- 42:19Speaker 12: West Virginia deserve reliable electricity and they deserve clean, pottable water.
- 42:24Speaker 12: I've said it over and over. If we have to
- 42:26Speaker 12: spend more money on this, that's what we're going to
- 42:28Speaker 12: have to do. But I've had it, and I know
- 42:31Speaker 12: my constituents have had it, and I think most West
- 42:33Speaker 12: Virginians have had it paying exorbitant rates for utility services,
- 42:38Speaker 12: getting crappy service. And I hate to use that word crappy,
- 42:41Speaker 12: but let's be honest, a lot of times it's crappy service.
- 42:44Speaker 3: It's got to improve.

- 46:22Speaker 3: Me tell you.
- 46:22Speaker 12: You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot
- 46:24Speaker 12: make it drink. You know, during that hearing, I think
- 46:27Speaker 12: I gave the example to the secretary, and we proposed
- 46:31Speaker 12: bill after bill after bill. I talk about these things
- 46:34Speaker 12: all the time, why cause it matters that we fix
- 46:36Speaker 12: the system despite that opiate crisis while I was US
- 46:40Speaker 12: attorney and now I get more messages from parents people
- 46:44Speaker 12: who are concerned about this system than I do any
- 46:47Speaker 12: other subject. And during that hearing, I say, you know,
- 46:50Speaker 12: this reminds me of the guy who's drowning on top
- 46:54Speaker 12: of the Zarofin. He says, God will save me, and
- 46:57Speaker 12: here comes a rowboat and he says, no, no, no, God
- 46:59Speaker 12: will save me.
- 47:00Speaker 3: He waters up to his waist.
- 47:01Speaker 12: Then next thing you know, he turns it down because
- 47:03Speaker 12: he thought God would save him. And next time a
- 47:06Speaker 12: helicopter comes by, waters up to his neck and he says, no,
- 47:10Speaker 12: don't worry, get somebody else in that helicopter.
- 47:13Speaker 3: God will save him.
- 47:13Speaker 12: Well, the guy dies of drowning, and when he's before God,
- 47:17Speaker 12: he says, I thought you would save me, And God said,
- 47:19Speaker 12: I sent you a boat and a helicopter, and he
- 47:23Speaker 12: chose neither of them. That's my point here is that
- 47:26Speaker 12: we can do better than what's happening in our child
- 47:28Speaker 12: welfare system. I need everybody.
- 47:31Speaker 3: We need to We've got to solve this crisis. It
- 47:34Speaker 3: is a moral obligation we solve this crisis.
- 47:37Speaker 12: I need everybody who's listening and who's cynical, and who
- 47:41Speaker 12: believes that it's all about talk. Start calling your legislators,
- 47:44Speaker 12: and call the governor's office, and call the secretary, and
- 47:48Speaker 12: let's get a sense of urgency to fix it now.
- 47:51Speaker 12: Waiting till next year is not okay. Waiting till the
- 47:54Speaker 12: year after not okay. I'm getting ready to head to Washington.
- 47:58Speaker 12: I hope to be able to help work on these
- 48:00Speaker 12: issues on a national basis. I care about these things desperately,
- 48:04Speaker 12: But I need your listeners, whether they love me or
- 48:06Speaker 12: hate me, Get on that phone, wear out your legislator
- 48:09Speaker 12: and tell them you want something done about this issue today.
- 48:13Speaker 4: Quickly on the Coencratic Bill. That's a young man who
- 48:16Speaker 4: was tragically killed Boone County, Boone County youngster. And you
- 48:22Speaker 4: have been a big part of this. You came on
- 48:24Speaker 4: the show, we talked about the guardian caps and everything.
- 48:26Speaker 12: Where is this now, Well, it passed committee, It is
- 48:29Speaker 12: appearing before the Finance Committee. Then it will go to
- 48:32Speaker 12: the Senate and hopefully to the House. This is an
- 48:34Speaker 12: important bill, that Cohen Cradoc Student Athlete Safety Bill. It's
- 48:38Speaker 12: not only about guardian caps around the helmets. That's a
- 48:41Speaker 12: small piece of this bill. But it creates a fund
- 48:45Speaker 12: a grant program, so I don't care whether you're playing
- 48:47Speaker 12: lacrosse or volleyball or involved in track. It will allow
- 48:51Speaker 12: folks to get free money basically from the state every
- 48:54Speaker 12: school to be able to improve on safety for all
- 48:58Speaker 12: the kids all across West Virginia. But I'll tell you
- 49:01Speaker 12: one thing that became apparent to me, we need these
- 49:04Speaker 12: types of things. You know, Cohen Cradock, when he died
- 49:07Speaker 12: as a result of what happened on that football field,
- 49:10Speaker 12: to this day, there's been no full scale investigation of
- 49:14Speaker 12: what happened on the field. It's an outrage and I
- 49:17Speaker 12: got to tell you whoever's responsible, they need to get
- 49:21Speaker 12: their work done. You know, Ryan Craddock to this moment
- 49:24Speaker 12: does not have the football helmet that his son was
- 49:27Speaker 12: wearing on the field that day. I cannot imagine the pain,
- 49:31Speaker 12: the anguish that you would feel every single day. And
- 49:34Speaker 12: You've been quite critical of the SSAC. I've been critical
- 49:37Speaker 12: because they insulate themselves from any sort of improvement and
- 49:42Speaker 12: they say they support this bill. If they support it,
- 49:45Speaker 12: I want to see him out there openly supporting it.
- 49:47Speaker 12: This is a great bill for student athletes across West Virginia.
- 49:52Speaker 12: The SSAC listen. I served a foy on them to
- 49:54Speaker 12: sort of test their transparency. They rejected giving me. They
- 49:58Speaker 12: said nothing. We're giving you nothing. And so this organization
- 50:01Speaker 12: reports to no one, does its own thing. I'm very
- 50:05Speaker 12: disappointed that there's not greater transparency with the SSAC and
- 50:12Speaker 12: the fact there's been no investigation of the death of
- 50:15Speaker 12: Cohen Krannock. I'm not going to blame anybody for that,
- 50:18Speaker 12: but where's the leadership There ought to be something come
- 50:21Speaker 12: out so we understand exactly what happened that day. His
- 50:24Speaker 12: family deserves that. His family deserves that.
- 50:26Speaker 4: Texas people are still dying every day and their kids
- 50:29Speaker 4: are wards of the state. Less than thirty days left
- 50:31Speaker 4: in the session, do something.
- 50:32Speaker 12: Listen, I'm trying listen. Like I said, you can lead
- 50:35Speaker 12: a horse to water, but you can't make a drink.
- 50:37Speaker 12: I'm one member up there. I'm speaking loudly on this issue.
- 50:41Speaker 12: Anybody who's listening will tell you I'm screaming off the
- 50:44Speaker 12: rooftop about the issues of child welfare. I want these
- 50:48Speaker 12: things fixed. We cannot continue down this path. It is
- 50:53Speaker 12: an embarrassment to the state of West Virginia, and I
- 50:56Speaker 12: think it's more important than any economic issue or social
- 51:00Speaker 12: asue we're dealing with right now. We've got to make
- 51:02Speaker 12: sure that we're responding to the needs of these kids
- 51:04Speaker 12: and we fix it.
- 51:06Speaker 4: Let me ask you quickly. You kind of alluded to
- 51:08Speaker 4: a little bit earlier. You still got to go through confirmation.
- 51:11Speaker 4: I don't know what you're allowed to say at this point,
- 51:13Speaker 4: so don't want to get you in any kind of
- 51:14Speaker 4: trouble as we wrap up. But thirty or forty five seconds,
- 51:16Speaker 4: what does your next career step.
- 51:18Speaker 3: What is the next step.
- 51:19Speaker 12: Well, we're getting closer to those confirmation hearings. But if
- 51:22Speaker 12: I get the opportunity, I don't want folks to understand
- 51:24Speaker 12: how big this is. It's good for West Virginia and
- 51:27Speaker 12: it's the National Institutes of Health, the CDC, Medicare, Medicaid
- 51:32Speaker 12: being the General Counsel something this big, the Office of
- 51:35Speaker 12: Refugee Resettlement, the Bureau for Children and Families, all Indian Health.
- 51:40Speaker 12: To be in a position where I can help lead
- 51:43Speaker 12: efforts to be able to deliver critical services to folks
- 51:46Speaker 12: who need it, desperately need it. I'm excited by that opportunity.
- 51:51Speaker 12: And let me say this is about West Virginia, not
- 51:53Speaker 12: about me, but real honor to be so early selected
- 51:57Speaker 12: by the President to serve in this role.
- 51:59Speaker 4: Say Senator Mike's Oh, I appreciate you being here. Man,
- 52:01Speaker 4: Thanks a lot, Thank you? All right, TJ. What's up
