- 0:00Speaker 1: This is Conrad Henry Roy.
- 0:04Speaker 2: He texts Michelle telling her that he wants his family
- 0:07Speaker 2: to know that he loved them. She says that they know.
- 0:11Speaker 2: I was on the phone with him and he got
- 0:13Speaker 2: out of his car because he could feel it working
- 0:16Speaker 2: and he got scared and I told him to get
- 0:20Speaker 2: back in the car. You're watching totally true crime. Conrad
- 0:26Speaker 2: roy Iid was born on the twelfth of September nineteen
- 0:30Speaker 2: ninety five. He was born in the state of Massachusetts
- 0:33Speaker 2: in America, and he was a talented athlete. He played
- 0:36Speaker 2: basketball and he ran. He was also extremely intelligent and
- 0:41Speaker 2: described as a gifted student. He had been accepted to
- 0:44Speaker 2: university to study business, and he also worked alongside his
- 0:49Speaker 2: father and grandfather in his family's marine salvage business. But
- 0:53Speaker 2: life hadn't always been easy for Conrad. His parents had
- 0:57Speaker 2: divorced in twenty twelve, and he claimed that his his
- 1:00Speaker 2: father had hit him and his grandfather had been verbally
- 1:03Speaker 2: abusive towards him. His mental health was impacted, and in
- 1:07Speaker 2: October twenty twelve, he attempted to take his own life.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Something else happened to Conrad that's significant in this case.
- 1:16Speaker 2: In twenty twelve, Conrad had been visiting relatives in Florida,
- 1:20Speaker 2: and whilst he was there, he met a girl called
- 1:23Speaker 2: Michelle Carter. They discovered that they lived thirty five miles
- 1:26Speaker 2: apart from each other and decided to stay in contact.
- 1:29Speaker 2: When Michelle heard about his attempted suicide, she tried to
- 1:33Speaker 2: talk to him and talk him out of it. She
- 1:35Speaker 2: encouraged him to talk to mental health professionals as he
- 1:38Speaker 2: struggled with social anxiety and depression. Conrad did talk to professionals.
- 1:43Speaker 2: He saw counselors and therapists, but his mental health would
- 1:47Speaker 2: often relapse. When he was seventeen, he had taken an
- 1:51Speaker 2: overdose which led to him being hospitalized and he was
- 1:54Speaker 2: placed on antidepressants, but his mental health continued to decline.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Through this time, Michelle kept in touch with Conrad. Michelle
- 2:02Speaker 2: had also had her own mental health struggles, and whilst
- 2:05Speaker 2: the majority of their relationship was over social media and
- 2:09Speaker 2: text messages, they met in person around five times. They
- 2:13Speaker 2: had arranged to meet each other many other times, but
- 2:15Speaker 2: those plans would often fall through, with one of them
- 2:18Speaker 2: pulling out. Their conversations were often deep and meaningful. Michelle
- 2:24Speaker 2: had also suffered with an eating disorder. Michelle was a
- 2:27Speaker 2: year younger than Comrade. When they met in twenty twelve,
- 2:30Speaker 2: she was sixteen and Conrad was seventeen. When they'd met
- 2:34Speaker 2: for the first time in Florida, they had taken a
- 2:36Speaker 2: bike ride together to the beach, and Michelle later told
- 2:39Speaker 2: Conrad that this is where she fell for him. Their
- 2:43Speaker 2: relationship was romantic, but long distance. Michelle loved TV shows
- 2:48Speaker 2: like Glee and the romantic storylines. Looking at messages sent
- 2:52Speaker 2: between the couple, they both recognized they needed help for
- 2:55Speaker 2: their struggles and would often encourage each other to get better.
- 3:00Speaker 2: In twenty fourteen, Conrad was seemingly doing well. In the spring,
- 3:05Speaker 2: he had earned his captain's license from the Northeast Maritime
- 3:09Speaker 2: Institute after attending a three month program. In June, he
- 3:13Speaker 2: graduated high school and made the honor roll. But something
- 3:17Speaker 2: had changed. His mental health was declining. In June twenty fourteen,
- 3:22Speaker 2: Conrad recorded this video he talked about his social anxiety.
- 3:28Speaker 1: This is Conrad Henry roy Third reporting about social anxiety.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Social anxiety in me is the inability to function properly
- 3:43Speaker 1: in a manner that you want to in social situations,
- 3:46Speaker 1: and one of the things that I've realized is not
- 3:50Speaker 1: all eyes are on you at all times. I am
- 3:53Speaker 1: who I am. Yes, I can develop as a person,
- 4:01Speaker 1: be more fluent, articulate, passionate about who I am. Where
- 4:09Speaker 1: I can just go home, sit in my basement and
- 4:13Speaker 1: just do nothing about it, just sit in my sorrows,
- 4:17Speaker 1: weep and cry over something that is in the past.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Or I can just take it one by a day
- 4:28Speaker 1: by day, step by step. I mean, it's going to
- 4:36Speaker 1: be difficult to accomplish, but I need for personal growth
- 4:45Speaker 1: accomplish this.
- 4:46Speaker 2: And just a month after this video was made, on
- 4:49Speaker 2: the twelfth of July twenty fourteen, Conrad Boy the third
- 4:53Speaker 2: drive his truck to the Kmart supermarket car part in
- 4:56Speaker 2: the town of fair Haven, Massachusetts, and then he ended
- 5:00Speaker 2: his life through carbon monoxide poisoning. Authorities discovered his body
- 5:05Speaker 2: in his truck the following day, and his family and
- 5:08Speaker 2: friends were told the life changing news that Comrad had
- 5:12Speaker 2: taken his own life. Comrad's mother, Lynn, told the press
- 5:15Speaker 2: that she didn't know how she was going to live
- 5:18Speaker 2: without her son. The pain of losing Conrad was felt
- 5:22Speaker 2: throughout his family, including his sisters and aunts, who paid
- 5:25Speaker 2: tribute to him publicly Comrad's funeral was held a week
- 5:29Speaker 2: after his passing. At the funeral, Michelle, accompanied by her
- 5:34Speaker 2: own mother, introduced herself to Lynn, Comrad's mother and told
- 5:37Speaker 2: her about their relationship. She didn't know about Michelle, and
- 5:41Speaker 2: they stayed in touch. After the funeral, Michelle texted Lynn
- 5:44Speaker 2: a message that said she'd been the best mother to
- 5:47Speaker 2: her son and told her how sorry she was for
- 5:50Speaker 2: her loss. She told her that she had quote tried
- 5:53Speaker 2: to fix him and told her that she felt like
- 5:56Speaker 2: she hadn't done enough. These are normal and valid feelings
- 6:00Speaker 2: that people often experience after a loved one dies by suicide,
- 6:04Speaker 2: and Lynn found herself comforting Michelle. But Michelle's behavior started
- 6:10Speaker 2: to become strange. She went to Lynn's home and into
- 6:14Speaker 2: Conrad's bedroom, and she asked to take some of his
- 6:16Speaker 2: things to keep to remember him by. She even asked
- 6:20Speaker 2: Lynn if she could have some of Conrad's ashes, something
- 6:23Speaker 2: that stood out as very odd. Michelle then told Lynn
- 6:27Speaker 2: that she wanted to arrange a suicide prevention fundraiser for
- 6:30Speaker 2: Conrad in his honor. That Conrad's best friend, Tom Gammle
- 6:35Speaker 2: thought that Michelle was doing it for attention. She had
- 6:38Speaker 2: organized it in her hometown instead of his. It was
- 6:42Speaker 2: mostly attended by her friends, and during the fundraiser, she
- 6:46Speaker 2: would tell people that Conrad was her boyfriend, though a
- 6:49Speaker 2: few of her friends said that she had told them
- 6:52Speaker 2: that he was just a friend when he was alive.
- 6:54Speaker 2: People were suspicious of her behavior, but nobody predicted what
- 6:58Speaker 2: happened next. Months after Conrad died, Michelle Carter texted a
- 7:03Speaker 2: friend and confessed to playing a part in his death.
- 7:07Speaker 2: She said quote, I could have stopped it. I was
- 7:10Speaker 2: on the phone with him and he got out of
- 7:12Speaker 2: his car because he could feel it working, and he
- 7:15Speaker 2: got scared, and I told him to get back in
- 7:19Speaker 2: the car. Conrad had left a notebook in his room.
- 7:23Speaker 2: It contained suicide notes to his closest family and friends,
- 7:27Speaker 2: and it also had a page that gave the passwords
- 7:31Speaker 2: and log in details to his phone and all of
- 7:33Speaker 2: his social media accounts. And what was found on Conrad's
- 7:37Speaker 2: phone was nothing short of harrowing. Michelle Carter and Conrad
- 7:42Speaker 2: had been communicating with each other since the year twenty twelve,
- 7:46Speaker 2: and from twenty twelve until early twenty fourteen, the messages
- 7:50Speaker 2: between the pair had been supportive and kind. On the
- 7:54Speaker 2: first of June, Conrad writes, I have social anxiety. Michelle replies,
- 8:00Speaker 2: I know you do, and I wish you didn't. There's
- 8:02Speaker 2: no need to what exactly are you afraid of? They
- 8:06Speaker 2: talk for a while, and Michelle offers Conrad some advice.
- 8:10Speaker 3: And maybe you shouldn't try so hard, just let it
- 8:13Speaker 3: come naturally. Not everyone is going to like you. You
- 8:16Speaker 3: have to realize that you can't please everyone. Just live
- 8:20Speaker 3: your life, not worrying about what people think of you,
- 8:23Speaker 3: and keep the people who do, like Slash, love you
- 8:25Speaker 3: and care about you close because they are the only
- 8:28Speaker 3: ones who matter.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Pages and pages of conversations like this clearly something more
- 8:34Speaker 2: than a friendship between the couple In these messages.
- 8:38Speaker 3: I want more than anything for you to be in
- 8:40Speaker 3: my life forever. You're one of the best things that
- 8:43Speaker 3: has ever happened to me. You still make me so
- 8:46Speaker 3: happy and so proud, and I want you to know
- 8:49Speaker 3: that I'll never give up on you.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Conrad tells her that he will always love her too.
- 8:54Speaker 2: On the twenty fifth of June, Michelle's tone changes slightly
- 8:58Speaker 2: from her previous messages. Comrade talks about taking his own life,
- 9:02Speaker 2: and Michelle seems to tackle it in a different way
- 9:06Speaker 2: and says this, if.
- 9:08Speaker 3: You don't have any hope of getting better, then why
- 9:10Speaker 3: are you holding on for so long? I think deep
- 9:13Speaker 3: down you have a bit of hope that you'll recover
- 9:16Speaker 3: from this, and you aren't killing yourself because a part
- 9:19Speaker 3: of you knows you'll get better, because if you didn't
- 9:23Speaker 3: have any hope, you would have already did it.
- 9:25Speaker 2: But later that evening, at eight pm, Michelle's tone changes completely.
- 9:33Speaker 2: On these messages, Conrad writes, I want to die, and
- 9:37Speaker 2: Michelle replies with this.
- 9:40Speaker 3: I know you want to, but I just don't get
- 9:42Speaker 3: why you're still holding on if you want to so badly.
- 9:46Speaker 3: I know you want to, and you research it and everything,
- 9:49Speaker 3: but are you actually really going to do it?
- 9:51Speaker 2: Michelle tells him that she thinks he's just afraid of
- 9:54Speaker 2: doing it. He tells her that ninety six percent of
- 9:57Speaker 2: suicide attempts result in failure, and she asks him how
- 10:02Speaker 2: much he wants to be in the four percent of
- 10:05Speaker 2: those that are successful. But on the first of July,
- 10:08Speaker 2: things get even darker. Comrade tells Michelle that he's depressed.
- 10:12Speaker 2: She asks him that if he's going to kill himself,
- 10:15Speaker 2: she wants to prepare herself, and she starts to talk
- 10:18Speaker 2: to him, telling him that if this is his last
- 10:20Speaker 2: day alive, then she wants to be talking to him
- 10:23Speaker 2: all day. He asks her if she wants to do
- 10:27Speaker 2: it with him a joint suicide pact.
- 10:30Speaker 3: I would, but I want to live my life for you.
- 10:33Speaker 3: Everything I do it's going to be for you. You're
- 10:36Speaker 3: the love of my life. I always knew we were special,
- 10:39Speaker 3: your mine forever, because I know you'd want me to
- 10:42Speaker 3: do good and live a happy life and get over
- 10:44Speaker 3: my eating disorder. And when I accomplish things, I'm always
- 10:48Speaker 3: going to look up to the sky and know you're
- 10:50Speaker 3: smiling down on me. It's going to be for you, okay. Well,
- 10:54Speaker 3: of course your family is going to grieve you. I
- 10:56Speaker 3: mean whenever people lose someone, they love them and are
- 11:01Speaker 3: hysterically sad for a good month, but then it gets
- 11:04Speaker 3: better and they won't be as sad. They will always
- 11:08Speaker 3: remember you and good times and memories. Your mom will
- 11:11Speaker 3: definitely be sad and lost for a few weeks, but
- 11:15Speaker 3: she will get better and she has support from family
- 11:18Speaker 3: and friends. She will know that you just wanted to
- 11:20Speaker 3: be happy, and instead of crying for you, she will
- 11:23Speaker 3: smile knowing that you're in a better place. Your parents
- 11:27Speaker 3: are not failures, and they will not think they are.
- 11:31Speaker 3: They tried everything they could, but your issues won. Yeah,
- 11:34Speaker 3: they'll probably blame themselves for a while, but they will
- 11:37Speaker 3: get over it and learn to accept it. They will
- 11:40Speaker 3: live for you just like I will. They will be okay.
- 11:43Speaker 3: I promise. I'll even call your mom every now and
- 11:46Speaker 3: then to check in.
- 11:48Speaker 2: The messages continue to get darker, with Michelle again discussing
- 11:52Speaker 2: methods of suicide and the statistics that support these methods
- 11:56Speaker 2: in being successful. Conrad then tells Michelle that he keeps
- 12:00Speaker 2: picturing his two youngest sisters crying over him if he
- 12:04Speaker 2: does take his own life.
- 12:06Speaker 3: Michelle replies with well, I would be devastated, shocked, and
- 12:11Speaker 3: extremely upset for a week or two, but as I said,
- 12:15Speaker 3: I would have to find ways to cope. I would
- 12:18Speaker 3: think about all the happy moments and the good times.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Michelle continues to ask Comrade when he's going to do it,
- 12:26Speaker 2: and Michelle offers to be on the phone with him
- 12:28Speaker 2: until the end. She asks him if she can get
- 12:31Speaker 2: his name tattooed on her and if she can have
- 12:34Speaker 2: his mother's number and his sister's numbers so she can
- 12:38Speaker 2: text them after he's died. She asks him if he's
- 12:42Speaker 2: going to do a quote last tweet and asks him
- 12:46Speaker 2: that if he does, can he make it about her
- 12:50Speaker 2: and can he tag her? And on the twelfth of
- 12:53Speaker 2: July they text each other for the last time. Conrad
- 12:56Speaker 2: tells her again that he's worried about what this will
- 12:59Speaker 2: do to his pa, parents and sisters. Michelle tells him
- 13:02Speaker 2: that they will be expecting it, that they wouldn't want
- 13:05Speaker 2: him to be sad and oppressed and tells him to
- 13:07Speaker 2: stop overthinking. He texts Michelle telling her that he wants
- 13:11Speaker 2: his family to know that he loved them. She says
- 13:16Speaker 2: that they know. He leaves his house around six twenty
- 13:18Speaker 2: pm and he makes two phone calls to Michelle as
- 13:22Speaker 2: he pulls into the supermarket car park and starts to
- 13:26Speaker 2: attempt on his life. He gets scared and leaves the
- 13:29Speaker 2: car and then goes back after Michelle tells him to.
- 13:33Speaker 2: She was on the phone to him for forty minutes
- 13:36Speaker 2: whilst also texting his sisters to ask them if they'd
- 13:40Speaker 2: seen Conrad, in an attempt to give herself an alibi,
- 13:44Speaker 2: but in reality, she was on the phone to him
- 13:47Speaker 2: for forty minutes listening to him die. Conrad passed away,
- 13:52Speaker 2: with Michelle Carter being the last person he spoke to.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Michelle Carter was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter. Michelle
- 14:02Speaker 2: was found guilty in June twenty seventeen. Comrad's family sat
- 14:06Speaker 2: in the court as they heard the painstake in evidence
- 14:09Speaker 2: against her as their messages were read out. She was
- 14:12Speaker 2: sentenced to two and a half years with fifteen months
- 14:15Speaker 2: to be served in prison, and she was released early
- 14:18Speaker 2: for good behavior. It's believed she's living with her family
- 14:23Speaker 2: and has kept a low profile since being released. Conrad's
- 14:27Speaker 2: family continue to miss him daily. His mother, Lynn, has
- 14:30Speaker 2: spoken about the profound effect her son's loss has had
- 14:34Speaker 2: on her and her family, but Lynn has also turned
- 14:38Speaker 2: her pain into purpose. She fought for a change in
- 14:41Speaker 2: the law that would make suicide enabling a criminal offense
- 14:45Speaker 2: in the state of Massachusetts. Conrad's law is still not
- 14:49Speaker 2: yet passed, and Comrad's loved ones are still fighting for
- 14:52Speaker 2: it to become an official law. If you would like
- 14:54Speaker 2: to show your support, a link to their Facebook group
- 14:57Speaker 2: is in the show notes. Photos on the Facebook show
- 15:00Speaker 2: hundreds of people fundraising for Conrad, paying tribute to him
- 15:04Speaker 2: and fighting for change. It's clear that Comrad's story has
- 15:08Speaker 2: touched the lives of so many. Thank you for watching.
