- 0:28SPEAKER_00: The first half of the season is in the books, and we begin the second half this week.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Today I will analyze a Class C Division V game between the Lansing Bobcats and Skylar Storm.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: I want to give a shout out to one of our Cover 4 podcast football analysts, Ryan Ginio of ESPN Ithaca, for his help with this analysis.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: And at the end, during the Ask Coach Smith segment, I will explain the overtime procedure used by Section 4.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: That game that I'm talking about, Lancing Bobcats at the Skylar Storm, that will be Saturday, October 12th at 7 p.m.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: at Watkins Glen Alumni Field.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: The Bobcats come into this game with a 3-2 record.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: They've scored 188 points but allowed 140.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: That's a differential of plus 48.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Lansing's off to a good start this season, though they could easily be 5-0, as their two losses came in absolute shootouts to Susquehanna Valley 42-36 and a wild one last week against Deposit Hancock 55-54, where they were stopped at the goal line on a two-point conversion attempt with 13 seconds remaining.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Some of the Lansing student athletes to watch are Logan Mayo, Corbin Lovejoy, Jackson Mayo, Dominic Smith, and Dash Benson.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: They will definitely have an influence on the outcome of this game.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Now on to the Storm.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: The Storm is struggling a little bit this year.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: They've only scored 26 points this season, but allowed 144.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: That's a differential of minus 118 points.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: The Storm has struggled to start the season at 1-3.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: A close loss at Newark Valley in their season opener, a pair of blowout losses to Windsor and Waverly, and a four foot win over Oxford.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: This will be their best chance to pick up a divisional win.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Some of the student athletes that'll definitely make a difference for the Skylar Storm are Christopher Simile, Daniel Coston, Kouasi, Wilt, Nick D'Alvia, Gavin Lomayer, and King Garabet, and also Ballin Alt Alt.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: Keys to the game To have a chance to win, teams must perform the basics better than their opponent.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: When I say basics, I mean blocking, tackling, and controlling the line of scrimmage.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: This game is going to be real simple in terms of I think who's going to win it.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Can the storm stop the Bobcats offense?
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: That's really what I think it's going to boil down to.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: And if the storm can do that, then this game should be very interesting.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: Now for the Ask Coach Smith segment.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Hey Coach Smith, what is the overtime rules for high school football in New York?
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Well, Section 4 uses the 20-yard line overtime procedure, and this is for regular season games as well as playoff games.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: All game rules apply except there's no game clock, only a play clock, and tries will not be attempted when not required to break the tie.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Each team receives one timeout per each extra period.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: Overtime begins with a three-minute intermission where teams can confer with their coaches and officials have time to review the procedure.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: Then the team captains meet at midfield for the coin toss.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: The visiting team captain is given the privilege of calling the caught the toss while the coin is in the air.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: The winner is given the choice of going on offense or defense first.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: The loser chooses the gold line to defend.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: The team scoring the most points in overtime shall be declared the winner.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: The final score shall be determined by totaling all points scored by each team during regulation and overtime.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: To begin the overtime, the offense shall put the ball in play first and ten on the defense's 20-yard line.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: The offense shall have a series of four downs to make a first down.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: The series shall be terminated by any offensive score or if the defense has possession at the end of any down.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: If the offense scores a touchdown, they are entitled to try for the point after touchdown or a two-point conversion, except when unnecessary to break a tie.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: A field goal attempt is permitted during any down.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: After the offense has completed its series, the defensive team now goes on offense with possession at the 20-yard line.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: The same end of the field will be used for both possessions to ensure equal game conditions and conserve time.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: If the score remains tied after each team has been given one series, the procedure shall be repeated until a winner is determined.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: There will be an intermission of two minutes during which the loser of the coin toss will be given first choice of the options.
